The Pirates lost to the Cardinals today 3-2 as the offense was quiet. Ryan O'Hearn did have 2 hits and was about the only offense we saw from who you expect to be the regular everyday players this year.
Mitch Keller did start for the Pirates and looked to be as good as you want to see from Mitch. He induced a lot of weak contact outside of the HR he allowed to Nolan Gorman in the 4th inning, He ended the day throwing just 3 full innings while giving up a run while striking out 3.
Ryan and Nate both interviewed Chris Devenski and Alika Williams which you can hear in this recap. Alika did have a 2-run shot today which did allow the Pirates to tie the Cardinals before finally falling to them in 9.

That was great.
Yeah.
But no, you're right.
The Pirates lose at the Cardinals.
If you're out there battling for the Great Fruit League Championship, this hurt.
These are not the kind of losses you can tell.
No.
You've got to win these games.
Yeah.
I mean, yes, it was an exhibition.
Maybe Columbia just took too much of the Pirates today.
No, all jokes aside.
So Mitch Keller started today.
And I do want to talk about him because he's looked pretty solid so far.
Again, it's spring training.
But he has looked solid so far today, seeing him up close and personal more.
I mean, he just, like, this just looked like Mitch Keller on his best is what he did today.
Yeah.
He pitched three great innings, you know, and only gave up a run.
He came out for the fourth and gave up a solo home run to Nolan Gorman.
Nolan Gorman's pretty good player, right?
Yeah.
Right.
Mitch looked really good.
He was getting grand balls, a couple strikeouts.
I think he gave up one hit in those first three.
But, right, if this is the Mitch Keller we're getting, I think we're going to be really happy with him.
I'm hoping that, you know, again, maybe Billy Murphy can add some, you know, help him out some.
And that I think maybe the pressure of not having to try to win one to nothing.
I think might be great for him.
So, right.
Yeah.
You didn't have a whole lot of swinging stuff.
But again, that's not truly like Mitch Keller's game.
He's not going out there striking out 10 in seven innings, right?
Right.
He's inducing weak contact.
And that's what he did today.
You know, I seemed like none of the guys outside of Gorman who hit the home run in the fourth,
did much of anything.
You know, there's one hardest hit ball that went to close to the warning track earlier on.
Outside of that, I mean, it was just dribbler, dribbler, foul ball, foul ball.
I felt like that's why he wasn't too efficient today.
The count got up a little higher than he wanted to see more or less those innings.
But it's because guys just kept falling off, falling off.
They could not really hit his stuff.
Yeah, they couldn't square him up.
And that's the important thing.
And right, you know, you do want, you always, you know, I talk about it all the time.
I want my pictures to be more efficient.
Our pirate pictures, our starter pictures in particular need, you know, they're delicate, right?
And they're handled delicately.
I guess that maybe that's even more important.
And we're going to need a lot of innings out of Mitch Keller and Paul Schienz
and anybody else that can give them to us.
So yeah, I'd like to see less three and two counts.
But right, he's not this rare back in striking out guy.
That's not what he does.
He can.
Yeah, he has some good strikeout.
A large repertoire of pictures.
But, you know, it's, it's the old race series, Ray Miller, you know, all sorts of rays have said, you know,
you know, three pitch outcome type stuff and work fast and change beads and all that sort of stuff.
And that's, you know, Mitch looked pretty good today.
What's his third?
I think it's his third spring stuff.
It was his third.
Yep.
First of all, runs so far this, this last spring.
Yeah, nothing to be discouraged about.
By any means.
And, yeah, you know, he'll probably give us four or five innings next time out.
Yeah.
Like I said, it was encouraging him to go into the fourth now.
Of course, he gave the home run.
Wasn't too effective in fourth.
They put him out put in Derek Diamond, who did clean up, you know, got through the inning.
So again, like we're not really looking at these as far as like actual runs and law, you know,
this isn't about wins and losses.
But Derek Diamond comes in.
He's an interesting prospect.
He was there.
He was on a fall league, you know, as far as a pitcher.
You know, he had an effect of fourth inning to get out of it.
And then, you know, outside of that, like the bullpen, I mean, they had on the two runs, right?
One more run.
It was Christavansky who gave a run there.
But again, as far as Mitch Keller goes, the day looked fine.
This looked pretty much like, I mean, Mitch Keller in mid season form had even stretched out.
They able to go six or seven.
I mean, he, he pitched effective.
This is what you kind of want to see from Mitch Keller.
He did what you, you know, he expect them to do.
So, so far, out of spring with him, looks so good.
Yeah, give us six innings of this every, every game.
Absolutely.
Right, we're gonna have a good season with Mitch Keller.
Yeah.
Yeah, he looked, he looked great.
So, let's kick it on the offense before we do.

Alright, so yeah, getting back to the office side now, of course it was two runs they had today.
It wasn't a whole lot of offense that happened from the guys that you want to see.
It wasn't a whole lot of offense with them either, but let's talk about Ryan and Herne.
He did have two hits today, start off with a single, then also gets a double.
I want to say this too, watching the game.
A lot of ABS action going on.
Ryan and Herne was one of them.
The second strike was actually called a ball.
The catcher was, he was on top of it.
The Colonel's catcher was living.
Challenge, challenge.
He was winning a lot of them, so that ball turned to a strike, made it a two strike count,
and then Ryan and Herne pulled it right field, got a double out of that.
But I mean, he had two hits.
He's looked at everybody that's advertised for this spring so far as well.
Yeah, it was a good day for Ryan and Herne.
It was a bad day for the home play downpire.
I think he had maybe five or six.
Finally, they didn't overturn one.
At least the first four for sure were all overturned.
He was not doing very well back there.
But it's part of it.
It's why you brought into ABS.
Yeah, and I enjoyed not doing that great job.
It moves real fast.
It's annoying when it goes against you, but when it goes for you.
Yeah, but he looked good.
Then anybody else?
Wait a minute.
A legal Williams.
We had a conversation about a legal Williams day watching batting practice.
We did.
A little peek behind the scenes.
And I went off on one of my silly rants that obviously did not age well.
Because I'm like, man, this guy's got no power.
Like, why isn't he working out more?
Why isn't he adding on some muscle?
Like, he needs to hit the ball harder.
I'm sitting in front of, when I say old ladies, they're older than me.
And they're like, oh, can this guy hit?
I'm like, no, this guy can't hit at all.
Don't you look like a dummy?
And then crack a line drive home run from a legal Williams.
His first is a pirate, right?
He's never hit one as a pirate.
Well, I'll say this, right?
He's never hit a home run in the major leagues.
Now as far as like any other spring, I don't know.
But if you're going to give me a bet, I'm going to bet he's never hit one in spring.
Yeah, yeah.
Like you said, we saw batting practice a couple times.
Yeah, it was fun.
Because I think Jim mentioned it last week or someone who was here has said it.
And then of course, with us watching it.
I mean, I saw, yeah, like the same thing.
Like he got a hold of one the other day.
And you're watching watching and just dies.
And it's like, man, I feel so bad.
But today it went out.
It went over the fence.
And the win was blowing in.
It was not win-nated.
It was not a win.
True.
It didn't hold back.
He hit one into the teeth of the wind.
And I still can't believe I saw it.
I mean, I was like, holy cow.
That's what I get.
That's what I get for, you know, talking about how weak he is.
There it is.
You know, I, uh, so good for you, Alec Williams.
And I hope there's many more to come.
That's right.
So yeah, I mean, Dustin may took the mound for them.
I mean, he's an interesting story as well.
We know the prospect of who was.
We know we did with the Dodgers.
Obviously, injuries derailed his career after a bit.
Still young enough.
He's with the Cardinals.
And I just feel like he's going to be a situation, of course,
because he's with the Cardinals, Doug.
That he's going to regain the form, be a pest for the Pittsburgh cards.
Of course he is.
He's going to go 16 and two.
And five victories will be against the Pirates.
And they could still be in last place.
And we could be in first place.
It doesn't matter.
It's the Cardinals to have the Cardinals.
Right.
But again, so he did his job.
Run or her not a good day against the Cardinals and him as well.
And as mentioned, I think the Williams had a two-run shot.
That's pretty much all the offense that was out there.
But hey, there was Joe Stinson Garcia.
You know what?
Yes, Garcia does continue.
He had a good day at the play again as well today.
I'm a lost words.
I mean, he's doing everything you want to see from him.
Right.
Of course, there's going to be the context of should he be starting
or not an opening day.
That's a whole other discussion.
There's still more camp to come.
But, you know, he did perform there.
But yeah, I want to talk because Nate brought on the Lika to talk to them.
Yeah.
I mean, the hero today, who did tick the lead.
You know, he was up there.
Yeah, yeah.
He had a shot.
Oh, tie it up.
Tie it up.
We're tied it up.
And then they lost.
So he wasn't so much the hero.
But he did hit the three-run shot.
Nate had talked to him.
So let's go ahead and cut to that conversation.
Well, everyone, I'm here with Pirates Infielder,
a Lika Williams tie-doing Lika.
I'm great.
How are you?
Pretty good.
Yeah, pretty.
Thank you for joining us.
Very short minute.
You hit a home run today.
You want to take us through that, I bet?
Yeah.
Quinn Matthews.
We faced him last year.
He was a really good fastball.
So I was just trying to have really good timing on that heater.
I got the pitch and caught it out front and went over the fence.
Yeah, they were explaining on the broadcast kind of like a line drive type of home run.
So whenever you hit a home run, major league minor league, whatever,
do you know as a hitter it is gone or is like you have to look at it a little bit?
I had my head down and I was running as fast as I could.
So I had no idea if it was going to get out or not.
I was just trying to get the second base as fast as I could.
That's awesome.
So I want to go through your defense a little bit.
So you have a pretty good defensive career.
Second base in shortstop.
Is there a position like you prefer the most out of the two?
Because you're kind of like that guy that can play anywhere in the infield.
So is there something that you do prefer over the other?
I love shortstop.
Shortstop's been kind of where I've played my whole life.
But as of lately, third base has been something that I've added to the tool belt.
So just anywhere the team needs me, I'll be ready.
Is there like an infielder you modeled your game after like growing up?
I loved watching Brandon Crawford.
Brandon Crawford was my guy growing up.
And then final question.
So you've been with the organization for a few years now.
Is there any particular spot in Pittsburgh?
You were very fond of like restaurant wise or like overall wise?
I think just walking, I would walk to the field every day.
And I think just walking over the Climany Bridge every day.
And that view of the stadium, you can't really beat it.
So I think I'm very fond of those memories of walking over that bridge every day.
Well awesome stuff today.
Leica, best of luck this year.
I really appreciate it.
Thank you.
All right, so yeah.
So again, like that was the offense.
Let's talk a little bit about the bullpen.
There wasn't like a whole lot of people that, you know, pitch today that you're looking to be like a big mainstay, I guess, to say in the bullpen.
I've insisted pitch today.
He's probably maybe on the outside looking in as far as lefties go.
He didn't help his case today.
It wasn't great.
But I'll say this.
I mean, Doug Lee said, wasn't great.
He walked through guys, right?
Right.
But what happened after that?
He didn't give up any runs.
He got a double play.
Yeah, he, I mean, there was points in that where it was like, he's got six strikes.
I mean, I'm watching the pitch count.
He's got six strikes and 12 balls.
And then it's like eight strikes and 16.
You know, it's like at no point did it look good.
And my little old lady friends were all like, this guy can't pitch.
And, but he didn't give up any runs.
So I'm just thinking, you know, it's spring training.
Right.
You know, you don't have a lot of opportunities that you need.
Maybe, you know, he wanted to make sure we can get himself out of jams.
Yeah.
And since, you know, this could be a classic working on something situation.
Yeah.
He right.
I've been throwing all one pitch here.
He wanted to load the bases to ensure like, all right, now the pressure's on.
Here's how I'm going to handle it.
And I'm going to show you guys how I can do it.
And he did it.
I'm not saying that's the case.
No, but it did.
But he did get out.
Higher than possible.
Right.
I mean, you know, in the end, we're, it's a result driven game.
Right.
He did not give up any runs.
Right.
So yeah, Evan Sisk went out there.
Didn't look so great.
But again, did get out of it.
Chris Devansky, that's also another guy on the outside looking in the camera.
I might like to deal.
He pitched well for the limited innings.
He had with the meds last year.
We know the run he had with the Houston Ashtows.
I mean, that was a guy that I think a lot of bullpen's what a loved of have.
He was a very good relief pitch.
I mean, yeah, he had a lot of credit to him on that run in the World Series.
I mean, he was relieved of that pitch over like 100 innings.
Like, everything we talk about with Carmen Viginski.
Like, you don't have that without Chris Devansky.
Yeah.
You know, he had that role.
So, you know, that's a guy who's on the outside maybe looking in some depth and such.
You know, he did give up the run.
But he's at an interesting spring.
Yeah, he hasn't looked really sharp yet.
He's a vet.
He's got experience.
I don't think you panic at this point or anything.
And these are, you know, often these are the kind of guys that will make the roster
and will say, oh, but he had a terrible, you know, belly falter.
Oh, that's a terrible spring.
Yeah.
Right.
And then belly falter.
He runs in the first inning.
Uh-huh.
And then we win that game, right?
And he doesn't give up another run until May or so.
Right.
So, you know, these are the, like I said, this guy could make the roster and we'll wonder why.
But they know things that we don't know.
They're asking him to do things that we don't know about.
So, again, he also may be working on something.
Yeah.
So, if he makes, you know, if he makes the roster, I won't be surprised.
If he doesn't, he goes to AAA.
I won't be surprised that he's up very, very soon.
That's just how it goes with these kind of guys.
That's how it goes with the, you know, roster management and bullpen management.
That sort of thing.
So, we'll see.
You're right.
There's, um, it's great that there's competition.
It's great that we've got some interesting arms.
Yeah.
For sure.
And if anything, definitely some, some depth there to the bullpen.
That every bullpen needs.
Uh, and speaking of which, Ryan caught up with Chris.
Uh, talked him for a little bit as well.
So, let's go ahead and cut to that.
All right.
We're here with Pirates pitcher Chris Devinsky.
Chris, thanks for joining us for a couple of minutes.
Um, this, uh, camp.
What's kind of like the results you've had.
You've been pitching pretty well.
Um, where do you, how do you feel as far?
Are they matches the results, matching up with where you feel, um,
coming into this camp or where you want to be?
Yeah, it does.
I think I'm progressing pretty good right now.
And, uh, I'm going to continue on that, uh, on the plan and keep moving forward.
It's good.
Um, how does, uh, you've, you've been obviously veteran, major league baseball.
How does this camp compare to other camps you've been in the talent-wise, kind of the vibes?
Um, is it up there?
Yeah, it's definitely up there right now.
There's great vibes, you know, excited to come in every, every day through the doors
and, you know, see all the guys, learn all the guys, you know, a lot of new faces for me.
Uh, but, you know, I just adapt and, and keep going and, and keep doing my thing
and trying to learn as much as I can every day.
Is there any players, um, that you're kind of looking out that, that stand out to you
or you kind of gravitate to, uh, on this team?
Uh, yeah.
I mean, Paul is one of them, you know.
He's, uh, you know, there's, there's, you know, he's great for a reason.
You know, the way he, he preps and goes about his business has been pretty huge watching him work.
And, you know, I, I like to observe and, you know, there's a, there's a couple of guys
that stick out to me, the young book riff, you know, he's, uh, you know, he's a stud.
So, I mean, you know, I take it day by day and, uh, you know, let these come organically.
Okay. Well, Chris Kovinsky of the Pittsburgh Pirates, thank you so much.
Okay, thank you.
All right, Doug, so I feel like that's pretty much the gist of today's game, you know,
what transpired, nothing, nothing really a lot to like talk and highlight of.
There are some little things here we mentioned, uh, but some other news came out today.
You know, they announced the breakout game roster.
Uh, the parts have a lot of prospects.
Yeah.
I mean, for once, like, there's some legit prospects in the head.

Take a good roster.
And word off talking just pitching either.
No. Offensively too. There's some really interesting guys.
Well, I mean, Connor Griffin's on the roster.
Yeah.
Justin Garcia's on the roster. Edward Florentino and Esmeralyn Veltes.
And you know, two Scorson's on the roster.
Guys that have been looking good in the Major League camp are on that roster.
And then of course, you got Barco Chandler.
Seven and seven.
And as it's it's it's a loaded roster.
I mean, I'm fully expect them to be favored.
I have no idea what to try.
You know, a system looks like her.
What have you?
Yeah, McGonagall.
And there's always going to be the McGonagall versus Connor Griffin battle at least for now.
I give you a weather hold today, too, from Mars, Pennsylvania.
You think he had a hit?
He did. He had a hit off Mitch Keller.
Yeah. So yeah, it's another another guy that will will be comparing to Connor throughout
the season.
Sure.
Sure. And actually speaking of.
So we do have Don Kelly's pressure at the end.
And he talked about JJ a little bit.
They both living in Mars and he knows a little about him.
And right, he did have that hit a bit against Mitch Keller.
He talked about Mitch Keller.
Actually, you know what?
I'll let you guys hear it.
Let's just go in and cut to it.
So here's Don Kelly.
So it's more.
So it's outing for Mitch today.
Yeah.
You know, he threw the ball well and to get him to the fourth up, getting close to 60 pitches.
That was a goal today.
And I again, thought he threw the ball well fastball was good, change up was good, through
a couple good breaking balls and just good out.
I would like to see a leap of good deep.
Yeah.
You know, he's been swinging about well, came on strong at the end of last year and had
a really good second half down in Indie.
And that's had a good camp so far.
We know he can play defense in the middle, especially at George Stup, and this one about
pretty well.
How have you seen him broke since the last time he was up in the Major League club?
Alika?
Yeah.
I think he looks more relaxed to me and just is going up there, getting his swing off,
you know, driving the ball.
And he really talked about last year.
We got to a point where he just went back to doing some things that he used to do and
has had some success with it again.
What's continued to impress you about Billy Cook and his defensive work?
I don't feel it.
Especially he said the win was blowing the opposite way at first and then it went the other
way when he was making that play.
Yeah, flip, mid game.
BP was tough today and then it flipped and in the middle of the game he flipped, but that
was a hack for play, especially to lead off the ending there and Rob to him and actually
he said he can go get it in the outfield and please, well, at first base too.
Really on one of your impressions of Ryan over and kind of been just the approach he has
at the play, just the production he's been able to provide this for.
Yeah, solid production, tireless worker, great attitude when he comes in and getting
some reps at first base today.
I was really impressed with the one where the throw kind of took him into the line and
he went into foul ground to go get it, which, having not been over there, his first game
over there was pretty impressive.
A leadership perspective.
How much value do you feel like you're getting you guys are going to get from you and you
bring you guys to go her and allow Azuna, guys you've played, you know, for a while, proven
headers, like adding that to the leaders that you already have in here, how important
is that going to be to you guys as soon as possible?
Yeah, a lot.
When you're talking about those guys, I mean, Laos has been with Tampa even to the playoffs
a lot.
Heron was part of the turnaround in Baltimore and what he meant to that team and then
Azuna has played for a long time and, you know, has been to the playoffs multiple times.
So just guys that we felt can help us have success during the race season and also where
we're trying to go on the playoffs.
Do I speak of Laos?
I was talking to him about his size and generating torque in using every ounce of his body.
When you look at him, you're kind of the opposite end of the spectrum, but what do you see?
How's he able to generate so much power for a guy's size?
I have no idea.
It's the lower half in how he uses it.
And I was speaking, I was the opposite.
I had no power when I hit, you know, it's really impressive the way that he was able, he's
able to drive the baseball and hit, you know, with 39 home runs with that, with that frame
just and when you see him hit, it's electric.
How cool was it to see a guy like JJ Weatherhole today?
He had mentioned you specifically pre-game saying that was someone who's excited to look
over at Steve in the dugout.
Yeah, it's really awesome.
You know, we live in Mars now, don't know him extremely well, but I'm at him and seeing
him working out up that way and just really happy for him and the success he's had.
And, you know, he's a great player.
I mean, that first of all, it was really impressive to, you know, fake the bun and then be able
to go back side with the ground ball and we know he's got power too.
The move last night, how do you kind of see Call of Duty fitting into this team?
The left-handed bat, it really can swing it and can play all over.
We're going to see him in multiple positions, excited to get him into camp and he dealt
with the injury last year and it's really excited, he's healthy and ready to roll.
Safe to assume the hawk owner is going to be one of those positions?
Yeah, we'll get him over there.
But second, third, left, mix him up and excited to add a left-handed bat there.
Non-pire move from earlier today and in recussion, signing them early deal with the Rangers.
How would you make of that signing and seeing him catch on there?
Yeah, excited for his opportunity there, obviously we all know what Cutch has meant to the pirates
to the city, you know, those years from 13 to 15 and longer for him and, you know, just
wish him the best with the Rangers and excited for the opportunity he has there.
Hoping to see him in April when you guys go there?
Yeah, absolutely.
All right, Doug, so that's pretty much wraps everything up.
I mean, this is our very, this is the game before tomorrow's our last game.
Our last game.
So we're starting to wrap things up here.
We're just seeing about two full weeks of spring training.
So we will be back tomorrow for our very last game.
Any last words you want to say before we get out today?
No, it is kind of an uneventful game today.
Every day is Tuesday and spring training type thing.
Every Tuesday.
Right, we have a split squad action tomorrow.
So we'll obviously go to one game and report on that and give you as much information from
the away game as possible.
And thanks for following along this spring.
It's been great.
We got one more day of it.
That's right.
That's right.
Big day tomorrow.
