1:04
What's up everybody?
1:06
Coming up on today's show, we're talking BYU basketball and why what Kevin Young has
1:11
already accomplished at BYU will have a long lasting impact on the BYU basketball program.
1:17
And it's a good thing.
1:18
We'll explain a little bit more coming up momentarily.
1:21
Then we'll also talk about Anton Bonk, the latest center BYU is reportedly in the mix
1:26
for out of the transfer portal.
1:28
And if you are a longstanding BYU recruiting junkie, you already know this young man's
1:33
We'll talk about that.
1:34
And we'll finish up today's show with an update on Canard Davis Jr. aka Mu Davis and
1:38
his court case in provost city.
1:40
It looks like it has been finalized and settled.
1:44
We'll talk about all of that ahead on today's show and want to thank you guys as always
1:48
for making us at Lockdown the number one sports podcast network.
1:53
So the job that Kevin Young has done at BYU is absolutely remarkable, but I think by any
1:58
discernible metric and the nice part is it appears that the impact he has already had
2:04
on BYU basketball is going to have a long lasting impact for years to come.
2:09
Case in point being a comment from the number one prospect in the 2027 recruiting class
2:14
that being CJ Ross or he spoke to on three dot com and had some very, I thought pointed
2:20
thoughts on what BYU means to him as he is going through the process of determining who
2:27
he is going to play for.
2:28
Now, he's been accrued by the likes of North Carolina, Louisville, Kentucky, Mark Pope, obviously
2:33
former BYU basketball coach, Alabama, Arkansas, man, go down the list, but also in the mixes
2:38
Auburn and then BYU and he told on three dot com this about BYU quote, they have a really
2:45
I like what coach Young did with a JD bonza, they really upgraded his game a whole lot
2:50
from when he got from when he got there, unquote, the impact there.
2:56
And I'll also give credit to post Jim or on social media, our good friend, Steve Pierce,
3:00
as he pointed out that what BYU did with a JD bonza and what they have done with Yeager
3:06
deal, man, the expectation of what they will do with a guy like Bruce branch, the third,
3:10
this upcoming season, it has an impact because the nation's top prospects are taking note
3:17
of what Kevin Young and the BYU basketball program are doing.
3:20
And that is going to have long lasting success.
3:22
I don't know if BYU will be capable of reeling in CJ roster.
3:27
If they are, man, that is another a JD bonza type player because if you look at his prospect
3:32
rating, he has rated 98 by 24 seven sports, the 24 seven sports composite rating, which
3:37
brings into play all the different recruiting rankings out there.
3:40
Has him as the number one player nationally, number one for his position at a power forward.
3:45
And the thing is he's not a guy who's playing his prep basketball anywhere near the state
3:50
He is playing at southeastern prep in Orlando, Florida.
3:53
He is clear across the country, but he is aware of what BYU has done.
3:57
He's aware of what AJ did, bonza's done.
4:00
And at 610, 195, he's at the length and the ability to be an impact player wherever he
4:07
And it shows that BYU's successes with these top end talents that they have had in the
4:13
program already is going to impact their future recruiting because these young men aren't
4:18
wholly unaware of what other top prospects are doing.
4:21
Guys like CJ roster, obviously, I have stars in their eyes and they're planning on being
4:26
a long time stud in the NBA.
4:29
That's what a JD bonza is headed towards right now.
4:33
I think that a guy like Rosser case in point shows that if BYU continues to have success
4:38
developing guys and sending them off to the NBA in the case of a Yeager dealman making
4:42
him a top 10 pick, I think AJ D'Bonson for my money is the number one pick in this year's
4:46
NBA draft that that is going to resonate with a lot of these top prospects.
4:52
And I think you compound that with the situation of what Rob Wright the third had to say about
4:57
his return to playing for BYU.
4:59
And it's a great thing to have a guy like Rob Wright decide the BYU's where he wants
5:05
He said this to BYU sports nation.
5:07
Ultimately, I just wanted to play for KYU speaking of Kevin Young.
5:09
I didn't think I wanted to play for another coach.
5:12
I was a transfer student and BYU really just embraced me.
5:15
I was just super appreciative of that and was a really big thought flowing through my
5:20
I didn't know if I wanted to go to a new place and experience something else when I had
5:23
a great year here on and off the court.
5:26
Man, isn't that what BYU wants?
5:29
Isn't that what you as a Cougar fan want to hear from a guy who was an all big 12 talent
5:34
and could have gone a number of different places, most notably a place like Kentucky because
5:40
trust me, the Kentucky wildcats are still in some ways, ruined the fact they weren't
5:44
able to seal the deal and get a guy like Rob Wright to play for the wildcats.
5:48
But BYU stepped up to the plate and everything that Rob Wright experienced in Provo made
5:55
him think, you know what, I don't want to go anywhere else.
5:58
I want to be in Provo, Utah and like I said, these successes and I'm using them just
6:02
compounding all of them together, putting them all together here.
6:05
The successes that BYU basketball has on the court are great, but it's even the successes
6:11
I got like Rob Wright from Wilmington, Delaware, played at Baylor, had no natural ties
6:16
to Utah or Provo, Utah in particular and he's come here, he's experienced it and he's
6:21
come away with a very favorable impression and I think at stuck with him as he went through
6:25
the recruiting process.
6:26
The other thing as he mentioned is that he was very clear up front and him and Kevin Young
6:30
had a very I think open conversation about him entering the transfer portal.
6:34
So this quote, me and him were talking a lot throughout the transfer portal process.
6:37
He always told me he got my back no matter what decision I chose.
6:41
Our relationship has grown a lot just because last year I had gotten here and we were just
6:45
trying to figure each other out.
6:46
Then towards the end of there really started clicking, so I just feel like coming into this
6:49
year will be a lot stronger on the same page, unquote.
6:54
That kind of shows I think the player coach relationship that can develop given adequate
7:01
time and ultimately both parties buying into one another.
7:04
I don't think Kevin Young is telling guys to go in the transfer portal, thanks for being
7:09
here, but don't even think about coming back.
7:11
I think he is very open understanding that this is the very nature of what college basketball
7:16
is today and it is that every single year guys are free agents and you're more than likely
7:21
going to have to turn over half if not more of your roster because that's what the transfer
7:25
portal numbers bear out is that more than 50% of all scholarship players are going to enter
7:30
the portal on an annual basis and until there are some guardrails that prevent that from
7:33
happening, that is what you just got to gear up for.
7:36
And I think Kevin Young tells these guys, hey, if you're going to the portal, great.
7:39
We understand and I think that based on what I understand about Rob Wright's situation
7:43
is that his representation and himself, they're very open and telling BYU, hey, we're
7:47
going to look at our options.
7:48
We're going to go around and see what offers we can get out there.
7:51
And once again, I'll reiterate the point here is the points out that ultimately I just
7:56
wanted to play for KY.
7:59
And that shows that yeah, despite I think both sides and I know as a fan, it may hurt
8:03
your heart in a way and it kind of hurts your pride.
8:05
The guys have even the notion of wanting to enter the transfer portal.
8:09
You'd like to have that, you have that loyalty to the program.
8:13
And trust me, in eras past, that's what these programs are built on.
8:17
But this is the new reality.
8:18
This is the new era of college basketball and I've got to give credit to Rob, right?
8:22
I've got credit to Kevin Young for understanding the reality of the situation, being grown
8:27
And ultimately coming back and rejoining forces and I guess the original point here is
8:32
they got like CJ Rosser watching at AJ D.
8:35
He's probably also taking note of what Rob Wright is developed into is an all big 12 player.
8:39
And that type of success that BYU is having, like I said, on and off the court, it resonates.
8:46
And it's going to have a very positive impact for the BYU basketball program as they roll
8:51
this forward in succeeding recruiting classes and building out the rosters in future years.
8:56
It's a great, great scenario for BYU to be in right now.
9:02
BYU is hot on the heels of a number of center prospects out there because simply put,
9:09
Let's be very blunt.
9:10
Well, the latest name has popped up and he's won if you are a long time BYU recruiting

10:59
dot com or you can click the link in the show and let's blow in like to see more of
11:03
you in our every day or club because we're off to a really really strong start in that
11:10
Anton Bunk another name that is popped up in BYU search in the transfer portal for
11:16
a center to come in and make BYU's line up whole quite bluntly they've done a very
11:21
good job of thinking the overall scheme of things with the transfer portal.
11:24
Hulling in a guy like Colin Chandler and Tyler Betsy some of the players they've grabbed
11:28
out of the portal you have Bruce branch the third incoming who's a five star prospect
11:33
You return a talents like Rob Wright the third well the one thing you don't have right
11:37
now in your lineup is a legit center right now as it stands if BYU have to play a game
11:42
today is it had been boop who's probably you're starting center and I think at best he's
11:47
a small ball five and even in that case it should be for short doses in my opinion.
11:53
So BYU is continuing to look for top and talent at the center position and we've chronicled
11:57
guys already like the likes of Luigi Swigo we've talked about a Julius Halifoneua and
12:03
we talked about those who are those you who are everydayers go back and check out those
12:07
segments if you haven't already but Anton Bunk has now emerged on the scene for BYU and
12:13
as a native of Vanuatu yes Vanuatu of all places on this planet has given us a seven
12:20
foot to 270 pounds specimen of a center and Anton Bunk and this is not the first time BYU
12:27
has pursued this young man they were pursued him when he was coming over from Vanuatu you
12:31
ultimately I decided that Providence is where he was going to play in the big east I spent
12:35
a season there playing for the friars I think the overall game logs for him at Providence
12:42
were 15 16 games excuse me didn't see a lot of time averages 1.3 points 1.2 rebounds and
12:48
about half a season's worth of action as I hit the portal again last off season landed
12:52
at Charlotte playing for the Charlotte 49ers over there in North Carolina and had a breakout
12:56
season by all accounts average is just a shade over 25 minutes a game shot 57.6% from
13:02
the field most impressively 34.2% from three reminds you this guy is 7 2 270 and then
13:09
also average 10.6 points 8.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this is a big body much
13:16
like Luigi Swigo who is a 7 I think 7 foot 250 pound prospect if I recall right now
13:22
maybe 7 2 also Julius Halifanua same thing 7 foot plus 250 pound plus big man you think
13:29
BYU has got an archetype what they want in their center position I think Kevin Young
13:33
looked across some of the lineups in the big 12 the BYU face last year I think most
13:37
notably probably the Arizona Wildcats and said you know what we've got to be bigger
13:42
in the in the paint we've got to have legit big men who are yeah 7 footers got length
13:47
and also based on some of the weights that are listed for these guys BYU recruiting guys
13:52
like Anton Bonk you need some girls you need some size and they that is one thing I think
13:56
they are targeting here and that's what Bonk brings to the table now is what he experienced
14:02
at the biggest level playing for Providence going to be an impediment if BYU were to
14:06
land on Bonk as their preferred option at center is that can be an impediment to him
14:10
succeeding at the big 12 level TBD but he obviously dropped down from the high major level
14:16
the power 5 level to play the mid major level playing for Charlotte had a breakout season
14:20
and he is eager to pop back up and it looks like because I know our friends over locked
14:25
on Michigan state I know that locked on Gonzaga among other podcasts here on the locked
14:30
on podcast network have talked about how Anton Bonk is a target for their programs but
14:36
the BYU has reengaged him and I think this would be a very nice addition now in my heart
14:42
of hearts if you were to ask me okay you got Luigi Swigo out there Jake you've got Julius
14:47
Halifanua and you got Anton Bonk what which of the three do you want I'm going to be greeting
14:51
say hey I want all three now and the reality of things with regards to NIL guys wanting
14:57
to have playing time these are why these guys are in the portal in the case of both
15:00
Halifanua and Bonk and in the case of Luigi Swigo he be looking to establish himself as
15:05
a higher priority NBA draft talent you have to obviously in some ways guarantee them
15:12
that they're going to have a prominent role with your program but I think Anton has shown
15:17
he's got the ability to impact the game at multiple levels as I said as a 7 foot 270 pound
15:22
big man he's not taking a ton of threes on the season but the fact that he shot 34.2%
15:27
overall from the field that's intriguing because that means that he's not a guy who has
15:32
to just park it in the lane now as I said 7 to 270 you're going to park him in the lane
15:37
defensively but it shows that he has got the ability to step out and hit threes when
15:42
called upon and it's not like I said he's not going to be out there hoisting them from
15:47
deep I think yeah I shot 38 of them last season of four charles so an average about one
15:51
per game but if you can hit that three or four times you step out there that opens up
15:57
the court so much wider in terms of spacing that was what Kevin Young's a whole prerogative
16:03
is for his program offensively he wants a lead spacing he wants NBA level spacing and
16:09
if a center that Anton Bunk can shoot the three at that level where it forces the opposing
16:13
big man to come all the way out to the three point line man that opens the lane for guys
16:18
like Rob Wright Bruce branch the third etc to attack the rim and that man completely
16:25
changes what could be that a dynamic of BYU's offensive attack and that is an intriguing
16:30
intriguing proposition and I think that is why BYU has interest in a guy like Bunk so
16:37
keep an eye on this I'm very curious to see which of the center prospects BYU lands
16:41
on but Bunk averaging 1.5 blocks per game it means he has a defensive force he's averaging
16:48
nearly a double double overall and that's good enough for BYU they don't need to be very
16:53
blunt they don't need a center to come in and be a 20 and 10 guy because they've got
16:57
a lot of other offensive weapons like I said Rob Wright is going to be the ball dominant
17:00
point guard I think he's always wanted to be without AJ to bonds to get in his way and
17:04
Richie Saunders also be in there and I think I Bruce branch the third he and Colin Chandler
17:09
very capable of playing off the ball and not having to have a lot of high usage rate
17:14
to impact the game and those are going to be more of your offensive weapons than a guy
17:17
like Anton Bunk would be but if he can contribute 10 and 10 maybe for the BYU basketball
17:23
program yeah maybe a block of game just to be a deterrent on defense just make life
17:28
miserable for opposing teams and like I said on offense if you can contribute some offense
17:32
in addition to being a three point threat man that is really really phenomenal like envision
17:40
that in your mind like man what could BYU's offense look like with a guy like that if
17:44
he can ultimately yield that type of attack and that's kind of what they lack from the center
17:49
position last year and it's nothing against Kebake to or BYU to Ahmed or even Xavier on
17:54
state and they just those guys didn't offer really anything offensively that was going
18:00
to be a weapon like you're playing four on five in some respects with those guys at center
18:05
I got like Bunk I got like Halifanua or even Luigi Swigo I think is the best of the
18:10
offensive weapons of these three center prospects we've discussed this week on the podcast they
18:15
would completely change the dynamic because it would become legitimately 5v5 you have an offensive
18:21
threat at center that completely opens the floor for BYU and I think really would unlock a lot of
18:27
what Kevin and I think envisions his long term goals for the BYU basketball program to be so keep
18:34
it on these names and I think Anton Bunk like I said if you remember him coming out of the
18:38
I don't know if it was the prep range he was coming over from Vanuatu BYU chased him then and
18:42
didn't win the race then but the relationship they apparently established has yielded yet another
18:48
opportunity potentially for him to land in Provo Utah and if what he showed at Charlotte translates
18:53
over BYU could be a very very strong beneficiary of having a guy that could come in and yeah
19:00
offer some three point shooting and legit 7 foot plus 250 pound plus size length and just overall
19:08
deterrent in the middle of this BYU lineup man that's a really really enticing proposition
19:14
if you're a BYU fan all right we will finish up today show coming up next and it's an update
19:20
on a I guess you call him a former member of the BYU basketball program because there's been no
19:24
indication he's going to return to BYU but canard move Davis obviously served a two game suspension
19:31
due to what was a suspicion of DUI charge from Provo PD well that case appears to be in the
19:38
rearview mirror and it has an interesting twist to it all and we'll get to that next right here
19:42

21:01
that is the BYU cougars and by the way and if you have fears that we're going to drop off in the
21:06
offseason if you're a newcomer to this podcast not not so fast my friend to use the old align
21:12
from coach Corso we go off season long so stay with us we will have plenty of coverage
21:18
basketball football everything in between we're doing fan Friday segments if you're an ever
21:22
day or club member we're bringing on a various BYU fans and letting them talk about what they
21:26
want to talk about we'll have Q&A sessions we will have you covered top to bottom all off season
21:30
long so thank you in advance for all of your support of this show all right so the canard davis
21:38
junior DUI situation now he was arrested on suspicion of DUI remember back in November BYU
21:44
was on their way to catch a charter fly to fly out to Boston to take on Yukon it was early on in
21:51
the season and then there was an incident where canard mudevis junior got in a car accident which
21:58
he by the way he did not cause according to the original reporting on this he did not cause the
22:03
accident but as a result of the investigation the police showed up obviously looking into it he
22:08
was then cited and arrested on suspicion of DUI now that makes headline news because obviously
22:14
that involves BYU in the very stringent honor code which prohibits obviously consumption of
22:20
listed drugs and the like so you obviously have that sensationalization of this entire situation
22:26
and it may not sensationalization but obviously it it it tracks attention that's just be very
22:32
blunt it's what it does and that's why it gets covered so heavily but as things have progressed
22:37
he had an initial appearance and then they delayed the pretrial diversion until april
22:44
earlier this month and I reached out to some people who I trust and can obviously fill me in on
22:51
what's going on and it appears that the original charge of suspicion of DUI was changed at some
22:59
point now that that's the one part of this I do not have clarification on on when the change
23:04
happened but mood Davis had the charge of suspicion of DUI changed from that to being charged
23:12
a citation for speeding now he did make a plea in a bance on that speeding charge you have to pay
23:19
a fine of I think it was $210 based on the documents that were filed with the court and a plea in a
23:25
bance means that if he stays out of trouble isn't have any other incidences with regards to
23:30
involving police anywhere his charge will ultimately never show up on his record and I think the
23:36
the what I was told was a six month situation now anybody who's been had a trafficking fraction you've
23:42
probably have been in a similar circumstance where you've had a plea in a bance like as long as you
23:46
like I said don't have any other infractions or citations pop up in a period of time yeah that citation
23:51
essentially disappears off of your record so that is where things stand with regards to canard
23:57
Davis junior situation now does he end up back a BYU does he end up landing somewhere else in
24:02
the in the transfer portal who knows but it appears that his long standing because it's it's been
24:09
pending out there since the month of November I think it was November 18th I'm trying to remember
24:15
that date of the Yukon games the day before it but it has been out there for the better part of
24:20
almost six months now and it appears it has come to a resolution and yeah like I said he the
24:25
ultimate outcome citation for speeding as I said pay to fine and so long as he completes the
24:33
probe that's like probation I've heard of the plea in a bance is a like a period of time so
24:37
long as you have any other infractions it will never show up on his record and that's that so I
24:43
wanted to pass that along to you guys I know some of I've had some people reach out and say hey
24:47
do you know anything that happened and I said you know I'm going to find out so that is where
24:51
things stand with regards to canard davis junior and I will add this I wish move the best wherever
24:58
he ends up whether he does come back to BYU because I don't know if there's any possibility of
25:03
that happening I've heard be very clear I've heard zero in in with regards to that could it happen
25:09
sure because I thought he came on strong at the in the final stands of the season became much more
25:14
of a potent offensive threat for BYU and could I think offer some offense and some ability to this
25:20
years lineup if he were to return to provo but regardless of wherever move ends up I wish him
25:26
the absolute best as he moves forward with his basketball playing career if it is not in fact
25:30
in provo you time playing for BYU because I thought overall move every time that we interacted
25:37
with it wasn't a ton but I thought he was a very had a very kind of upbeat personality about all
25:42
things and like I said he when you show up at BYU and then like I said a handful of months into
25:47
your tenure there you get arrested and on suspicion of DUI yeah that could have a lot of people
25:53
looking down on yeah and I understand why I'm not obtuse to obviously that but I also think that
26:01
it ultimately played out where I thought he had a very positive impact on this basketball program
26:05
and it appears that his legal situation is now in the past and he is able to move forward with
26:11
whatever is next in his basketball playing career all right that is going to do it for today's
