In this episode, Caleb Jones explains that the true purpose of building a location-independent business is not money, but maximizing personal freedom across time, income, location, and work. He breaks down how this model transforms your lifestyle by giving you full control over how you live, work, and earn—far beyond what traditional employment can offer.
Hi there and welcome to the Unchained CEO podcast. If you prefer the audio
version of this podcast you can go to Caleb Jones that is C-A-L-E-B-S and boy
Jones.com slash podcast. I'm on all the usual podcast platforms. I am here in
Dubai which means I've already been killed by missiles. Five million people
live in Dubai. One has been killed over the past two weeks so clearly I'm in
mortal dreadful danger and need to go to Paraguay. Pussies. Anyway today I'm
going to focus on the number one reason why you start a business and that's not
how much money you make. That is a side benefit. The reason you start at
Alpha2 put a location in a business the way we teach here at Unchained CEO is to
raise your level of freedom. That's it. Yes, money's involved. If you want to
make a lot of money, wonderful please do so. Awesome. But that actually is not the
reason because you can make a lot of money as a you know beta male employee
working for Google. It is possible. You can do that. Sure. You can make six
figures doing that. You're going to pay a lot of money in taxes and you'll have no
freedom but you will have the money. So it's not just about money it is more about
freedom and specifically your location-penet business increases your freedom in
four ways. In no particular order. But this is how I look at my work. I look at my
work not as way to generate income or money. I do look at that obviously. But I
look at this as an engine for freedom for Caleb and the people in Caleb's
inner circle. Four ways. Number one, freedom of time. They have done
happiness studies and they have found that people who set their own schedules
tend to be happier than people have to report to a job. Obviously. And frankly
this was probably the biggest reason why I started my first business way back in
1996 when I quit my last job. I wanted freedom of time or to wake up every
morning and I wanted to decide what to do with that day when I worked and when I
took a break and when I didn't work. I didn't want some boss holding a gun in my
head saying you have to be here at 8 a.m. You have to stay here till five even if
you got your work done it. Stupid. So number one is freedom of time. The biggest
challenge with being an employee in my opinion. This is my opinion. Now this is
not unchanged CEO or alpha to this is just Caleb's personal opinion is that you
have no freedom of time at all. You're basically you're no better off than a
first grader going to school. So when you went to school you had to go to school
right get up really early. I did this for 12 years. I'm sure you did it too. You
get a really early or half asleep you sit in there your mom drives you or you're
on the bus and you're half asleep right and you have to sit there in this
classroom for hours and you can't leave till 3 30. Well if you have a job it's the
same scenario. That's fucking dumb. Why are you being treated like a
kindergartner? This is ridiculously sure an adult. You should be able to work
when you want to work and not work when you don't want to work. Very simple. I've
had my freedom of time for what almost 30 years now 30 years actually you know
what? This year 2026 is my 30 year anniversary I think yeah as a self-employed
individual. I just kind of I just realized that because 1996 was October of
96 was when I quit my last job. So I've had freedom of time for 30 years. One
of the reasons I'm very happy I live good life. I can do whatever I want
whenever I want. So that's the first thing that a location-dependent business
gives you that being an employee does not give you is freedom of time which I
think is in my opinion is the most important one. Now the other three here I'm
about to list are really important but freedom of time is so big. I don't know
what that would be like for me if I suddenly had to go get a job and report to
an office 8 to 5. I would probably just jump off a cliff. Next one is freedom of
money. What that means is you decide how much money you make. So this was my
second biggest issue when I was an employee. When you are an employer talk
this many times. When you are an employee the amount of money you make is based
on one factor and only one factor and that's pretty much it. There are rare
exceptions but pretty much when you're an employee the amount of income you make
is based on one thing. What is that one thing? Whether or not you went to college
no how many years of experience you have no how long you worked with a company
no no how smart you are no how good of an employee are no no that's not what
none of those things are factors how much money you make is an employee no
no no no no no. Especially for a bigger company. Now maybe in a really tiny
business with like three or four people it's a little different again they're
exceptions but that's not the factor. The one factor that decides how much money
you make as an employee is your job title that's it. So you you you get your
stupid business card or the stupid plaque on your on your cubicle or your desk
and you look at under which says you know senior IT manager what are the
fuck that is that's how much you get paid whenever that job technical support
specialist okay whatever it is I don't care what it is does matter that
decides how much when you get paid that's it CEO right that decides how much
when you get paid. Is that a relevant way of you being compensated for your work
no when I had a job long time ago now I remember I worked for a software
company I was in an apartment of 60 people I was 19 years old 19 to 22 was
a young young young kid and I was in the top 5% of the entire department in
terms of productivity and how much work I got done and how much money I made
that company at a 60 people I was the top 5% was I paid the top 5% no I was
paid just like everybody else pretty much so it didn't matter so freedom of
money means if you want to make a hundred thousand year you can if you want to
make 200 thousand year you can if you want to make 500 thousand year you can if
you want to make a million year or more you can but the caveat is that's a very
different system and model and very different lifestyle I've discussed that
other podcasts their videos so that's a different thing but my point is you
can now if you only want to make in your business 45 thousand year and just
fuck off and live in Chiang Mai the rest of your life where it's really cheap or
Paraguay you can do that you have freedom to make any amount of money you want
to make you do not have that freedom as an employee and as we move into the
A collapse the Western world because you guys keep voting for the lesser of
two evils and B the AI revolution where everyone's gonna lose their jobs this
is more important now than ever that you control your own income instead of your
job title or your boss or your company or industry control your income okay next
thing this is a big one especially again today in our collapse chaotic world
which we have freedom of location if you are an employee yes there are rare
exceptions but if you are an employee most likely you do not have freedom of
location you must live in a particular city to do that job and you can't leave
unless you quit the job so unless you quit the job you have to stay in that city
to earn income from that job you have to stay in that town even in many cases if
you're a moat sometimes not those are exceptions but generally speaking you
don't have freedom of location you don't and this includes internationally like
there are guys of remote jobs that can't leave the United States or that
partially what but they can't leave they have to be there once a week okay that
sucks as Doug Casey has put it out many times when you are locked into a
particular location in order to earn your income you are living the lifestyle of a
plant not of a human being not of an animal human beings are mobile creatures
throughout all of human history we've moved around we go wherever we want because
we have that ability and you destroy that by having a job I have been
location independent for hmm so I've been self-employed for 30 years I've been
a location dependent for probably oh I have to think about that 15 17 years
somewhere there maybe not 20 but maybe just under 20 long time which means I
love it I can go anywhere in the world I want whatever I want stay there for
as long as I want and the money just keeps coming in my income is not
tethered to where I live it's beautiful and that's what a location
dependent location dependent business does for you it allows you to be free
from your location the classic bullshit excuse but Caleb I like where I live
are you gonna like where you live forever a lot of you in the Western world
particularly those of you in the United States and the UK are feeling a lot of
pressure like it wasn't as good as it used to be huh yeah shit changes
doesn't it in the 1980s I grew up in Portland Oregon Portland Oregon the 80s
was literally with the top cities not in the United States but in the world in
terms of the ability number one top cities in the world number one always the
top five top five top ten cities in the world is it today now it's a crime
ridden shit hole where they're deploying the national guard okay so are you sure
you're gonna love it forever is gonna be perfect forever especially in the
air of western collapse probably not you need to have the ability to go wherever
you want if you love where you live I love it here in Dubai I love it in Paraguay
okay but if I ever change my mind I can go wherever the fuck I want I have four or
five other flags I have residency in five different countries now you don't
need residency in five countries like Caleb my point is you need to be mobile and
that's what you have in terms of freedom of location so freedom of
location means you are not free I talk to this over my alpha male too put on
stuff you are not free if you're rooted to the city where you live for whatever
reason it can be booked my mom okay whatever okay last one is one that a lot
people don't think about is freedom of work so and I've talked to a lot of you
about this a lot of you commented about this a lot of you're written in about this
freedom of work means you get a work on what you get a work on you get a work
on what you want to work on the projects that you find interesting is that true
when you're in ploy no now you've seen the statistics 80 is it 83% of
people Americans hate their job now you might be in that 17% when you think your
job is really awesome wonderful your rare accepts the rule most of you think
your job sucks or at least it's very boring when you have your own business you
can decide what to work on now I've talked about don't follow your passion that
doesn't fucking work unless it's your second or third business and there's
parameters around that but even if you choose a niche that is not your passion
you can still choose to how you work the types of and you can also choose who
you work with I've mentioned this many times now God I went through this when I
was an employee when you're an employee you got to work with other co-workers
can you pick your co-workers what if your co-workers are assholes what if your
co-workers are insane I worked at a company called the corporate offices of a
big bank big corporate bank called first near state bank Portland Oregon a
billion years ago in the 90s and worked in their high-rise corporate offices
and I worked with a guy with a bunch of teammates it was like six people my
team and one of them was a legit psychopath this guy would come in and like
loses shit the screaming yell he would like shove stuff on people's desks he once
picked up a stapler and threw it at a guy's head hit him in the back and okay
do you think I wanted to work with him no did I have a choice no I didn't let's
want to quit whereas if you have your own business guess what guess what you
could work with anyone you want to work with and if you don't like working with
them you fire them including if they're clients I have fired clients I'm good at
firing clients if I don't like you as a person if you're giving me a bunch of
bullshit as a customer client goodbye I'm nice but you're out of there so
including clients what about if you have a job and your boss is horrible can you
fire your boss and keep working your job no you're fucked your only options
to quit the job and then not get baiting more so you can work on the projects
you want to work on within reason and work with the people you want to work
with now let me backtrack on that on the working on what you want to work on
does that mean you will love a hundred percent of everything you do no I've
said this many times we've been very honest about this I love what I do I love
my companies I love my work especially lately now that I'm in this new phase
of my life oh my god I just I think about my work all day long and all night
it's so exciting I mean like this comic book I'm working on these other
projects the book oh my god it's just I love it okay but not any business
below the changes we're making there I mean just oh my god I'm just so excited
about this stuff but I don't love a hundred percent of all the work I do in a
given week I love about 70 80 percent of it there's about 20 30 I don't love but
that's hell a lot better when I job how much I love when I had a job 0% maybe
10% so I'll take 80% over 10% any day any day you don't understand if you've
never had your location at Penn and business you don't understand the
transformation it makes in your life the whole life the whole life and lifestyle
that changes when you have a business like this it's the greatest thing in the
world that's why you need to build this now you need to build this because you
live in a collapsing civilization and you're in very very very very very very
big trouble if you don't I've talked about that in great detail my books my
blogs win videos okay but today I'm giving the positive side you need to do
this you need experience this when you can decide how much money you make when
you could decide when you want to work and when you don't want to work and you
have to check in with the boss and check in with anybody when you can decide who
you work with and the types of people you want to work with the types of projects
you want to work with and when you can decide anywhere in the world you want to
live and the income keeps coming in do you understand that the transformation that
makes in your entire life do you understand how different your entire life
becomes by the way this is irrelevant of who you are as a person so this will
change your life whether or not you're a man or a woman whether or not you're in
your 20s or 50s whether or not you're a single dude get laid or not whether
or not you're a married man with little kids it doesn't matter this changes
everything everything in your life and if you are a man who has a family I do an
unconventional family but I have one if you have a spouse children whatever these
freedoms reflect upon them as well I mean if you are a dad you got two kids a wife
okay what if you are making plenty of money from anywhere you want of the
world and you work wherever the hell you want you think that would change your
life for your children are you kidding that's why you build this so I talk a lot
about there's the carrot in the stick I talk a lot about the stick and I'm going
to continue to talk about the stick you live in a collapsing society a guy's going
to come in after your job you're in big fucking trouble a carrot is what I just
talked about all these freedoms that you gain that's why you should do this even
if America the entire Western world was like prospering and on the rise but let's
say it was you live in some fantasy land where America's gonna do great sorry I
cannot laugh you would still want to do this if this was 1987 you'd still want to
do this I would there you go get to work start your own location in a business
find an Aaron Aaron itch find out what they want give it to them coaching or a
business service you could live this lifestyle because I'm telling you you have
no idea how awesome however awesome or cool you think it is it's 10x better I
promise try it you'll see
