This is a post game show, number 82 of the regular season.
As the Montreal Canadians wrapped up the marathon.
That is their season, punching their ticket to the first round.
We knew it was against Tampa Bay.
Where was the series going to open?
Was left unanswered before puck dropped in Philadelphia.
That question no longer lingers.
Game one from Tampa Bay.
Marco, good afternoon.
Good to see you again.
Lots to dive into today as always.
I kind of want to pick your brain on the season at large and how it unraveled and expectations met,
surpassed, surprised you.
But let's start with the loss in Philadelphia.
I don't know how much time you wanted to vote to that, to that game last night.
But what do you make of the fact that two of their last three games,
you and I have come here with the perspective of Columbus,
a throwaway game, emotional letdown, Philadelphia, a better game,
but still nevertheless a four to awesome, curious how you took in those,
those two losses in particular to end the year.
I think it's difficult to evaluate because they weren't really giving it their all.
I think we were mostly looking at guys that had something to prove,
like David Reimbacher, for example,
Zach Baldzuk on the, you know, the game prior,
guys that have serious aspirations to, you know,
have a roster spot come playoff time.
And I think that's more along the lines of it.
I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed in the play of Jakob Dobas.
She seemed a little shaky yesterday, but you know, I reiterate that was one game.
He's been great for a month.
This is his first bad game in a month.
So nothing too crazy, I would say, but again, like,
you get to this point of the year, it's like you don't want to get injured.
You want to get to the playoffs.
You know, I think the biggest issue for me right now is the fact that,
you know, the series, every single series is known now in the east.
And we still don't know when this team is starting.
I know we know it's Sunday, but we don't know when.
Yeah, I mean, you saw, I think with the TNT ESPN broadcast,
the four game window, I happened to be texting after the game last night
with a friend in the broadcast business.
And there was, there was a very unlikely chance, but he had mentioned,
they might move that concert on Saturday, but that seemed very unlikely.
The smart bet was Sunday afternoon for this game to get going.
The one or the four o'clock kind of window, right?
Is it stands today?
Is that correct?
Yeah, I think it's one.
Five, seven and nine thirty.
Okay, so we know it's not the nine thirty game, right?
We can rule that bad boy out.
So that leaves us with the afternoon or the prime time game.
Based on, you know, when it opens, but you're right.
I mean, we do know it's open up against Tampa Bay.
Obviously, we're going to have a lot of time between now and Sunday
to kind of handicap that series and set it all up and a massive match
up in the first round where the Canadians are significant under dogs
with the absence being felt clearly by Noah Dobson.
We'll talk about the importance of that.
But you mentioned David Rhinebacker, you know, getting a look at him yesterday
for the second time in the National Hockey League.
If I had to ask you today, and I'm going to ask you right now,
what do you think the odds are that maybe he gets a shift or two?
He gets a game this spring in the playoffs?
Do you see it?
Anything is possible, and I won't say yes or no.
Okay.
It's the most boring answer, but don't ask me about lineup stuff
with Marta Saint-Louis.
Yeah, I know.
So, you know, based on the way that he was utilized yesterday
against Philly in a nothing game, you know, he's minutes were not
very good, barely used in the second period.
And that's not to his discredit.
I thought he had a, you know,
a rocky first period, and then you really kind of found his rhythm
as the game went on.
So, you know, it's fine.
It really is fine for him to get to, you know, experience a couple
of games, get his first NHL point against the Islanders,
and then keep him around because Laval doesn't play in the playoffs
or at least another week and a half.
Right.
So, there's no sense in rushing him down either.
So, you have the opportunity to keep him around the team,
film what that playoff environment looks like,
and then send him down if you want.
Do I think he can get a game?
I think he can get a game.
All depends on the health of Alex Carrier.
I just don't see this team going with six left shots.
That's right.
I don't think it's going to happen.
So, that kind of opens the door for him if there is an opportunity.
But I still believe that Alex Carrier will play.
He didn't travel with the team, maybe because they felt like he needed
the most amount of rest.
Kaden Gouli, a lot of people were worried about,
but Kaden Gouli could play, like if this were the playoffs,
Kaden Gouli would have been playing all week.
Like he's not that injured, but they just don't want to play with fire, you know what I'm saying?
So, they let him go there.
So, if we assess, you know, obviously the way that they played last night
is a huge downer.
And it creates anxiety now, because, you know, I got questions like,
how long is Jakob Dobysch's leash going to be based on tonight's performance?
And, you know, the response could be as long as it needs to be,
because we're talking about him in the colder discussions for the second or third place.
And he's one of the most winning-est rookie goalies in history.
So, you have to go with it.
But I think the real crux is, Ryan Bakker will get in,
depending on the health of Dobysch, sorry, Dobbsen, wrong, Dobbsen and Carrier.
Once we know what's going on with them,
I'll be able to answer the rest of it.
For sure.
And listen, I mean, already, I mean, like I'll put this question up.
I honestly, I mean, everyone's entitled to their point of view,
but, you know, this is just for the record, Windsor writes in,
Dobysch or Fowler, who are you more comfortable starting with?
I, for the life of me, I don't even have that circulating in my brain.
Like, to me, it's not open for debate.
It's not even close.
It's Jakob Dobysch all day, every day.
And the context of, you know, Marco bringing up the leash question being asked about,
you know, how long is Jakob Dobysch's leash in this series for however long it may be?
What's important to note, it's an almost an impossible question to answer, you know, incredibly,
because what's the context of the question resurfacing?
You know, what did it look like?
You know, is he just getting rattled or easy goals,
savable goals, getting a biome repeatedly?
I mean, the context of what that, what that world would look like,
I think, then and there, right?
We're talking about having that discussion, but Marco, I mean,
feel free to disagree as always, right?
Your own point of view is extremely valuable,
but there's no, there's no debate is there between Dobysch and Fowler ahead of Sunday's game one.
It's rubbish.
Yeah.
I think we've seen it the way that they rode him towards the end of the season.
You know, it seemed to be an average of two games,
Dolbysch, one game Fowler, give or take.
Yeah.
And, you know, who is the goalie that played Tampa?
Right.
Yeah, the two one game, yeah.
Even though, even the one prior to that.
Yep.
Dolbysch.
You know, there's your, there's the most indicative response that you need is,
yeah.
So I think last night was a, you could chalk it up to a bad game.
I don't think anybody really cared.
But, you know, he's been solid for a month now.
And if you're going to, if you're like, if we're going to start getting fickle because of the last game of the season.
I mean, that's power to you, man.
I can't live with that inconsistency.
Yeah.
I wish I could debate you, but I just, I, I just can't.
The reaction and the opinion is, I mean, it is what it is.
You know, you brought up Noah Dobson and clearly that has a massive impact in this series for however long he's going to be on the shelf for.
Is it as obvious as, you know, the question about how do they absorb the Noah Dobson injury by committee who steps up to be able to play that role?
How much of that do you think falls on a guy like Kate and Goolee going into the first game or two without Noah Dobson?

Massive.
Yeah.
You know, he's going to have to step in and be a top-air defenseman because that's exactly what Noah Dobson was.
Montreal as the benefit of having two number one D on their team, which is why the mobility on their back end was so fluid.
You know, I don't think a lot of people think that Davish has a short leash.
I think a player, for example, like, came Gouli has the longest leash of them all with Martaine St. Louis because he brings an element that's very rare.
And that's elite rush defense.
I think when you look at Caden Gouli's overall game when he is healthy, it's very difficult to get by him.
When you're in the corners and he's playing physical, he's very hard to get, you know, for you to get the puck away from him and to execute kind of a cycle around him.
And he's got that transition ability just due to skating where he could relieve a lot of pressure in the defensive zone and get things moving forward.
I like his chances of getting in some meaningful minutes. He's definitely going to take over Dobson's defensive minutes.
Adam Engstrom was playing on the second power play away yesterday.
We'll see what ends up happening with him if they dress him, if they don't.
I think after that, they may either try Gouli on that second wave of the power play.
I'm going to go back to Mathis and one element that I may want to see is maybe Arbor Jacki on the second wave of the power play.
Because when he hits net, his shot is so difficult.
When he hits net, his shot is so difficult to contain.
You saw that Jake Evans goal yesterday.
So I'd be interested, but I think knowing Martaine St. Louis, probably going to go with the tried and true Mike Mathis and in that case, unless he feels that Mathis and was getting a little overwhelmed in the minutes.
In which case, they'll, you know, he'll circle back just to angstrom, if need be.
So the Montreal Canadians finish the year top three in the NHL's Atlantic division, a 15 point bump from a year ago when they got in in wild card two with 91 points.
Five players finish with at least 60 points this season.
No adoption, just on the outside looking in of a 50 point campaign finishes the year with 47 points.
But Nick Suzuki 101, coffield with 88 points and 51 goals.
Boy, did that guy try to score 52, 53 last night.
Coffield had 10 shots on goal in the loss.
Lane Hudson season, Slavkowski hits 30, Demidov, rookie scoring leader, Marco.
Talk me through what you thought about, you know, this season.
And listen, I remember my preseason prediction.
I thought that I wouldn't be surprised if there was a slight regression.
I thought at the bare minimum, the Canadians would be fighting for a playoff spot, but would ultimately get in.
But, you know, I remember my prediction, I did not think this was going to be a top three team.
So obviously my, my read today would be a surprise, pleasant surprise finished to their season.
Walk me through your fall predictions and the accomplishment that the collective was able to put together through 82 games.
I had them finishing third in the, in the Atlantic.
I think we remember that either third in the Atlantic or first wild card.
But I felt third in the Atlantic was, was doable.
Though I did have the leaves finishing first in the division.
Okay.
So you win some you lose some.
Yeah, that predictions is such a, I hate it.
Yeah, I know.
But I guess in this case, it's a win-win for Canadian fans.
So I don't, I don't think it's a problem.
That's a good read.
Yeah.
So I thought that they were going to be there in terms of a collective impact.
I did not, however, have Kolkow field scoring 51 goals.
I did not have Nick Suzuki hitting 91 points.
I would have been happy with your ice love, Kowski hitting 60 points, never mind 73.
I did have Lane Hudson at 75 points.
So it wasn't too far off with him.
Yeah.
And to meet off, I thought 60 points was around where he would land.
That's exactly where he landed.
Again, some things work.
Sometimes you don't, you know, to meet off and I pretty close.
So I had, I had a feeling that he was going to turn the jets on a second half of the season.
That's exactly what he did.
And you know, again, historic season for the Canadians.
One of their best seasons in a recent memory, you know, going in the 21st century to be completely honest with you.
And it's only going to fuel what the future comes from with this team.
I've been adamant about it.
I know a lot of you have said it, but I've been adamant about it.
I don't feel like their Stanley Cup window has opened.
But compared to where we were talking about this at the beginning of the season,
they are far closer to that opening,
imminently than we maybe thought of in September.
And I think that's a very positive outlook to the season.
I think it's hard to disagree with that.
If you call it down the middle,
if you notice, you know, before we jumped on,
you were riffing off Vincent's roar or someone a player we covered in our prospect video.
We did this week as Seymour LeBlanc refreshes our memory with,
with you suggesting that he was going to be at Laval.
And then the rocket came out pretty quickly and confirmed themselves pleasant surprise.
Vincent's roar, Marco.
Now with the Laval rocket.
Yep.
So Vincent's roar was said to be on his way to Canada in the next coming day.
So either.
I think it's either today or tomorrow.
He should be arriving.
Yeah.
According to his camp.
It was because he signed an entry level contract last summer.
The Canadians loaned him back to Zurich because he didn't have a valid contract for this year.
And the way that the transfer agreement works between the NHL and European leagues.
A player outside of the first round is signed to an entry level contract,
while holding a valid European league contract for the next year.
If he doesn't make the NHL roster, you have to loan him back to Europe first.
Can't send him to the American Hockey League.
So that's what they did.
The season is over.
And because he's under contract, there's no questions.
The Canadians have full control now.
And they sent him to Laval.
This is a permanent move to North America.
He's still has two years left on his deal after this one.
So there's a permanent move to Laval.
You know, and again, for those that are unfamiliar with roar,
he's not going to blow you away on the stat sheet.
It's not going to be a huge score, but he is the love child.
That one Brendan Gallagher would make with Paul Byron.
It is that style, that speed, combattiveness,
hard to move off the puck, never, you know, relentless motor.
A special teams guy that you're going to love, both power play and penalty kill.
You know, if you go back to listen to some of the draft videos with the Montreal Canadians.
That elite role player mentality, like that.
The guy that's going to have those intangibles that when you look back on it,
you're going to be like, ah.
And yeah, he may not be like six, three, six, four.
He's more like five, eleven, one, eighty.
But it's how he plays that makes him dangerous.
It's.
He's a handful.
And I think his game is better suited for North America than it is for larger ice,
which is the quality that I brought up are going to be ever more present.
The tighter the space gets.
And, you know, I look forward to seeing how he's going to be utilized in La Valle.
That's that's where he's going.
They've already made place for him in the lineup.
So he's got his first practice on Friday.
We'll see if he gets any game time this weekend.
A few people, again, you know, kind of joining not, you know,
sometimes I have to remind myself not everybody's online.
Not everybody's, you know, glue to their phones.
People have their lives and their jobs and, you know,
the day to day and the grind and everything else.
So just to clear it up, the Canadians and lightning.
Ready to open up on Sunday.
Nothing really confirmed yet yet.
In terms of, I mean, Tampa has a Latin who's at peso.
Topas, I think, is opening up a playing, playing a set from Tampa Bay at their arena
that I used to call Emily Arena.
Forget what it's benchmark.
Now, I think.
But he's playing their Saturday.
So that opens up a four game window for around one of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
And the Canadians, the smart money is they play an afternoon game on Sunday.
Again, just waiting for confirmation on that.
But all signs point to Sunday and Sunday afternoon.
Game one, Montreal and Tampa Bay.
You brought up the, you know, just there talking about Vincent's roar and Brendan Gallagher there.
Big fan of that comp.
I think it's a great way to describe it to make it relatable.
And that takes us again, you know, I'm not going to ask predictions or anything else like that.
But the Montreal Canadians have a few questions that need to be answered.
And Martin St. Louis is the man that is going to answer those questions.
I'm curious what you saw after four games of being a healthy scratch.
Brendan Gallagher scores for the first time since of February 4th.
It's, you know, I know he's been a lightning rod for criticism this season.
You know, his better days are behind him.
But there's something.
I guess I don't know.
Am I hardwired to just think of the old days with Brendan Gallagher and knowing how the playoffs are and getting to the net.
And can he still do that job, Marco?
And I wonder about whether or not he's going to play against Tampa Bay in this series.
I think I think it's anyone's guess who's going to play in these series.
I know.
I know.
I know.
Unfortunately, Canadians want to play playoffs in the season.
So I can't give you inside information on who they're going to play.
Because they make it up as they go along.
So I don't know what to tell you.
But isn't that an end of the audition of how many guys that he moved around that like I think we could sit here and discuss.
That's the fact that no one has really blown you away.
If we talk about Bulldoch and we talk about Kirby Doc.
We talk about Brendan Gallagher in or out.
I think the smart money has taxi and Joe Valeno in.
Yes.
I was going to say taxi.
I was like, I thought taxi played well.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I thought he had a good game last night.
His setup was really good on the first goal, I thought.
So I don't see him getting out of the top nine.
It's, to me, really, I think, you know, Anderson is an automatic.
Has to be in the lineup versus Tampa Bay.
Agreed.
Valeno has to be in the lineup for me.
And I didn't think I would ever say that.
So quote me on it today.
But his physicality and his speed is going to be ever more important.
As the Canadians look to use at least one line to physically impose themselves
against the Tampa Bay.
Like because they don't have a one that can actually do that on a regular basis.
At least right now in terms of style.
You know, and then you, you know, Dano comes back in.
So Evans, Dano, Anderson, Valeno, those are four of your bottom six.
Assuming that tech CA plays on the second line,
then that means companion is the fifth member of your bottom six.
And then so who's the last guy you let?
Who's the last guy you bring in?
Bullsick.
Doc or Gallagher?
And I think that's, that's where things get a little complicating for me.
I create.
I just feel.

Pick up these maplie.
I feel like Bullsick.
As the style and the gnarliness that you would want him to play in this game.
In this kind of a series.
I don't think we see him start it.
I think it's going to be either Gallagher or Doc.
Personally, let's start this.
Let's start against happen.
And don't you.
I mean, just to narrow it down.
I know hard disagreement.
You know, I think you can make a case for all three players.
But to me, the case is probably stronger.
When it comes to Bulldog or Doc, you know, you're asking.
You're asking if Zachary Bulldog can be more intense.
Can he help score if the top line is covered?
And the second line is trying to manufacture offense together with taxi a new hook.
And Demidov.
Let's assume for a second that's going to be the second line trio.
But then there's also, to me, the argument pro Kirby doc is the skill.
And I know, you know, he took a nasty spill last night.
I think everybody was holding their collective breath.
Oh, my God, not again.
But obviously, you know, he stayed on the bench.
And that was that.
But the skill factor.
And we've seen him when he wants to be aggressive.
He can, he can find that part of his game.
But the question is, like, how long can you wait for that to arrive at your doorstep?
Like it's got the belief has to be you have to be convinced that game one Sunday.
It's like, boom, there it is.
And it ain't going to stop.
And who gives you what player there gives you the better chance at doing that?
Honestly, I know it's a shit answer, but I don't know.
I don't know.
I think it's dark.
I think it is.
I don't know.
Like it's any man's guess at this point.
Yes.
I think Gallagher makes the most sense from an experience perspective,
considering this is the youngest team to ever make the playoffs.
Something to consider maybe.
And that in regards to that, though the bottom six is where all the,
all the veterans are currently playing the top line, the second line.
And I would say, you know, the defense is where the youth lies mostly.
But I still feel like if you're, you know, you saw yesterday,
if the Canadians needed a gift where they needed a warrior shift.
And you would know that in the playoffs, things slow down just to smidge them.
Right.
I just feel like that's maybe where a Brendan Gallagher can come up with like a warrior shift,
and pull his team into the game.
Right.
That's what I'm talking about.
But at the same time, for how long?
That's right to be gassed.
Is he going to be gassed after seven, eight, nine minutes?
You know, like, so there's a lot to take into consideration.
From a pure physicality, from a pure efficacy,
and from a pure durability standpoint,
if it's not Gallagher for me, it's Budzick.
I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for this,
but I think that I think time has done its course with Kirby doc.
And you can't go into a playoff game thinking,
oh, well, what happens if we're down to 11 forwards
because something could happen to Kirby?
I get it.
I get it.
I get you're trying to, you know, you know,
you're forming your original.
What you think gives the Canadians the best chance to win a game
when the series come back with a split after game two.
It's absolutely.
And it's a difficult call to make because what the Canadians lack right now
is those crash and bang personas.
Have Anderson.
Valeno is kind of that.
But if Budzick were effective outside of his forecheck,
this would be a non-issue.
It would be Budzick.
He would be physical.
He would go to the net.
He, you know, he would be making heads up decisions.
He wouldn't be giving up on back checks.
Like, if he, if all that were not part of the equation
and he was just a player that he was at the beginning of the season,
this would be a non-issue.
He would be in.
He would be on the third line left wing being a, you know,
a physical pest.
The only thing that makes me think that Budzick may draw in
and be over a companion.
For example, would be that pest mentality.
Would be the fact that he has that playoff experience
and he's been effective in the playoffs with the blues before
and he was an A-hole for them.
Constantly just getting under people's skin
and that's the kind of play you want in these playoffs.
And I feel like the timid nature of some of these other players
may play against them.
But again, you look at a player like a companion.
He has the benefit of being a really strong two-way player.
Be a center and a guy that you can put on special teams,
both power play and penalty kill.
So again, you're weighing pros and cons off each other.
It's a very difficult decision.
But at the same time, like I said, anyone in the comments right now
could have the right answer.
Exactly.
And I would tip my hat because it's anyone's guess.
I think that's the correct phrase.
I think that's how you put it together.
And off of that, you know, you look forward to this first round series.
So I think it's going to be a tough.
I think there's a good chance it's going to be a long series.
I don't think it's going to be like a Washington capitals,
gentlemen sweep.
That's just my early read on this.
And we'll dive into how much the Noah Dobson injury affects
your ability to handicap this series in terms of picking a winner
where you were on the fence with the Canadians.
But now you're more skewed towards the lightning because of the injury
to Noah Dobson, which I would understand.
Anything have you heard anything about Victor Hedmond,
who has been on the shelf for personal reasons and kind of where he's
at in terms of availability for game one on Sunday.
I have not heard of thing when it comes to.
But the thing that comes to my mind with Hedmond and I think really.
He's been out for him for he's going to have been out for a month.
You know, if the series starts on Sunday,
where Wednesday today that gives him four days to get back to Tampa.
And to get into game shape after not having played for a month.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Even if he is back, he won't be at his 100%.
He's missed so much time this year already.
Right.
Due to injury due to this obviously.
So I don't know the efficacy that he would bring.
But even besides that, you have.
You know, Darren, Darren, Darren radish, not Taylor.
Playing out of his mind this year.
And McDonough is always a playoff beast as a matter what's happening.
Eric Ternock is a big body, big boy player that you really, you know,
will be very difficult to get around.
And does to has really established himself this year on for Tampa Bay in terms of being that presence.
So even without Hedmond, it's a formidable defense.
And it's a defense that plays tight together.
So.
You know, a lot of people that I've spoken to have been like, well, you know,
the Canadians are without dobson.
It's the end of the world.
Well, Tampa Bay has been without one of their top pair defensemen basically 70 games out of 82 this season.
Right.
And they finished two points ahead of Montreal.
So it's the next man up on both sides.
If the Canadians are without dobson and.
My two cents is the Canadians are playing mind games on dobson.
I have a feeling that he may miss a gamer to just start.
But I have this suspicion.
This is not a report.
It's not a rumor.
I just gut feeling I have this suspicion that there's a possibility that we see him sooner than later in this series.
And that would change the whole dynamic.
No kidding.
I mean, you're talking about a guy going to play 23 to 24 minutes a night.
Top pair are the shop locking guy veteran guy speed guy.
Yeah, I mean, I don't think we have to, you know, talk talk to the audience about the skill set of Noah dobson.
But you're right.
I mean, injuries come playoff time.
There's always this pride in the in the back of the minds of these NHL players and how tough they are.
That warrior mentality to want to want to kind of air quotes suck it up and get out there and, you know, enjoy the rewards for a season well played.
You don't want to let guys down.
So here's how we're going to do this, Sean.
If you had everyone healthy.
Yes.
Everyone healthy outside of no adoption.
Yeah.
What would be your defense pairs?
Game one boy.
Oh boy.
And guys and guys and gals.
File means feel free to write your defensive pairings in the comments.
I think you might like this one for me.
I think you might like this one for me just a little bit, right?
Assuming.
Carrier is healthy here, right?
Because I think I've seen Carrier skate.
He looks fine from from the lower body is it was an upper body.
There's an upper body.
I know.
I know.
Yeah.
I think angstrom stays in Rhinebacker is out.
Obviously, Matt Mathis and Gouli.
And I think I'm going to lean on Arbor Jacki.
I think I'm going to give him a little bit of a look.
Okay, so build it.
What's what are the pairings?
Oh boy.
Hudson's going to be my be my first pair, Marco.
I want.
Doesn't matter who your first pair is.
No, but I'm just going to.
The first two pairs are going to play 50 55 minutes anyway.
Yeah, I understand.
I think I might go.
Hudson Mathis in.
I'm going to keep Hudson on the left side.
I'm going to slide Mathis in over to the right side.
And then I.
And Carrier is available, eh?
I think I might go.
Yeah.
Carrier Jacki.
And.
I'm going to guess angstrom and Gouli.
Okay.
I mean, listen, there's no wrong answer.
We're all guessing at this point.
I'm just.
I'm really leaning on Hudson.
That's the long way of me saying I'm just going to.
I'm going to lean on lean Hudson.
Yeah.
Okay.
So I the way I'm see the way I'm.
I've seen it drawn up.
Yeah.
Because.
Again, you know, we're talking about playing.
Ryan Bakker in the playoffs.
Guys, you played like what 11 minutes yesterday?
Yeah, I don't see it.
Person, but whatever.
On the road against Tampa.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like again, the last time I made fun of everybody for a suggestion,
it ended up happening.
So I'm going to be clear when I say this.
Unless an absolute emergency situation happens.
And not to be any.
Mm hmm.
I would be surprised.
If so, what I David Ryan Bakker played simply just because.
If you don't trust him at five on five on the in the last game of the season
with no consequences.
Yeah.
Are you going to trust him when all the chips are in the table?
And I understand everybody's saying it like, hey, you know,
the Canadians would only have one healthy, right shot defenseman.
If Kerry is healthy, absolutely.
If Kerry is healthy, if Kerry is not healthy, then I think they're going to have no choice
but to put Ryan Bakker in the lineup.
And that is 100% fair.
When injuries come, you work with what you got 100%.
But I think Canadians go.
Mathis and Gouli as they're shut down pair.
This is going to make everybody cringe.
Yeah.
But knowing Marta Saint Louis, I think they're going to go Hudson Carrier.
Oh, wow.
Second pair.
Oh, wow.
And then they're going to go Strubel, Jack, I second, third pair.
And if it's not that, then it's simply going to go flip flop.
Hut.
It's going to be Strubel, Hudson, second pair.
And then Carrier, Jack, I third pair.
Yeah, give me the ladder there.
Carrier and Hudson.
I understand.
I understand.
Yeah.
But just under also remember that at five on five, those two pairs are going to be playing 90% of the minutes.
Yeah.
So if you're hiding Kerry on your third pair, like that's not knowing the relationship that Marta Saint Louis has with Kerry.
So that's why I'm like, yeah.
Yeah.
But, you know, it's, again, it's difficult because you're looking at it like this.
And you're looking at a straight line.
But you also have to factor in how Marta Saint Louis uses his lines because.
Carrier was on the third pair for most of the year, but he was consistently playing 19 to 20 minutes a game.
Why?
Because he was getting 14, 15 minutes of five on five, which is normal for a bottom pair defense in the regular season.
But then getting supplemented with peak.
Correct.
Yes.
I don't know that.
Sorry.
Someone made a really good one.
This is a good one.
Sean.
Kerry can be Hudson's meat shield.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Sorry, guys.
I needed.
I needed that laugh this morning.
I just can't come back.
We haven't seen him in a minute.
I need.
I needed that comedy right there.
But again, I, you know, I think it's.
Do we feel in the chat?
Do we feel.
Mattissing ghouly.
Seems to be.
What would make sense for a top pair, if you're looking for a pair to shut down the opposition?
Mm hmm.
I feel like that would be fair.
I feel like Mattissing's going to be on whatever shutdown pair the Canadian is going to put forth.
But also like you know,
you saw the numbers, sport logic spit out about Lane Hudson as defensive metrics.
I mean, the guys in the 90th percent aisle, he's a high ahead of lurid citer.
He's ahead of Zach Orenski.
Right.
I mean, right.
But with the injury to dobson. Yeah, you're likely only going to get one defenseman giving you high octane offense, and that's Hudson. You can't put him on a pair that's going to be tasked with shutting down. That doesn't mean that they can't agree. Yeah, they're strong defensively, but like if you have to play a matchup game, like you're on the ice.
And then Cooper throws the Kuchara of line out. Well, who are you putting out there?
Well, you're going to put out probably a combination of Gouli and Mathisyn. And I know a lot of people are going to shutter, but also potentially carry in that situation.
I was going to say, I don't want to stumbles and jack I out there when when the Kuchara flying jumps over the boards.
I wouldn't mind it. Really?
Kuchara of office. I would, I would, if our jack guy is on the ice and Kuchara was on the ice, the directive is like piggyback on this man, like hold on to him.
Like day out, get in his get under his skin. Don't get a penalty. Well do, but do what they did. The last game they played against Tampa and get under his skin.
Piss him off because an angry coach. Oh my god, that's terrible. An angry chair off is completely thrown off his game. He gets like another one that when he gets stop laughing.
Nobody likes an angry coach from nobody. You got me there. You got me there. I'm sorry.
All right, we're going to have to ask Ali the intern not to clip that one.
Yeah.
Damn it.
Oh, shit. You made me maybe watch here.
I'm really tired. I'm sorry.
But I do believe strongly that.
Jack, I has value in this series.
And I really want to state this because we're going to talk about every minute goddamn detail as we get into these playoffs.
And I want to say that the way that they've played over the last couple of days. I'm sorry.
I believe that arbor jackeye significant value to this team.
Both is in his ability that he's shown to be able to play left and right without issue.
But two is that he's added.
Different elements to his game now that make him.
More of a like a layered defenseman in the sense that offensively he's expressing himself a little bit more.
He's more aggressive and cutting off the passes at the source before letting them in.
That's good rush defense.
And in his own end, he's one of the only ones that just like legitimately like deletes players from the play, right?
Like he just moves them out of the way or just pushes them down or is on them and is in their face.
That's the kind of smash mouth mentality that they need.
The only issue that people had with arbor prior to was that he only did the latter and did not display any of the two former points that were brought up.
Now that he's kind of layered his game, I think it makes a ton of sense to have him on a bottom pair, especially if potentially a guy like Alex carry a needs to be sheltered with the most physical defenseman.
And I think there is the value in that.
He's being said.
I think it's anybody's guess, but I just feel like the chances of Rhinebacker drawing in if carry is healthy are slim.
I think having him around the team is valuable and I think he will be around the team because as we said at the top of the hour, Laval has a buy in the American hockey league playoffs.
The first place team gets a buy.
And the I think the fourth and fifth place or the fifth and sixth place.
I'll figure it out play each other in a play in a three games and then the regular playoff format begins.
So Laval really doesn't play their first playoff game for at least another 10 days.
Correct.
So you can just keep him around the team and again knock on wood.
You don't know what's going to happen with this series, but you can just keep him around the team.
And if there's another injury, you can insert him no problem.
That's where the value of your that death can come in. That's why having him around could be really valuable for his own development and understanding the game and practicing and being around the team.
Because there is value in that.
From King Caru, who mentions here that he's hammering the Montreal Canadians on the series odds.
When the odds first came out for what it's worth, the Canadians were plus 240 to win this best of seven series.
For those that are unfamiliar, I guess you know, you see those odds all the time pop up on your screen plus 240 or football minus set points or plus set points, right.
The way to think it through is very easy.
When you see minus 240 or plus 240.
If it's plus 240, you wager 100 bucks to get 240 back and contrary, if it's minus 240, you got to lay 240 dollars your money for the chance to win 100 dollars.
So that's just kind of the round math and further to that for the more math nerds.
The plus 240 on the Canadians to win this series is basically an implied 29% likelihood of the Canadians winning the series.
When I saw the number, Marco, when it was first released, when I saw the has plus 240 and like, damn, that's under 30%.
Where did they get that number from?
Why is it, I didn't believe going in that it was going to be odds perspective.
Why it was so lopsided.
I personally, I mean, I know we spend all of our time on the Montreal Canadians, Marco.
I don't know about you, but I didn't think it was going to be that wide of a gap between the favorite and the underdog in this series.
I didn't believe the Canadians would be underdogs, but not significant underdogs.
I think that those odds would be very different if Dobson were healthy.
I agree.
And do you think home ice also played a role in and the odds came out.
We weren't entirely sure it was before last night's Philly game home ice also plays a role.
The fact that Tampa is pretty much healthy now indicates that they're probably better than what their record states.
So there is probably a multiplier there too.
And this isn't like, this isn't a gambling segment, but it's more for you to understand how the probabilities were built out.
Yes, so that you can we can kind of argue are the Canadians really a 30% underdog compared to the 70% likelihood of Tampa Bay.
Well, Tampa is just as good a road team as Montreal this year.
I would just point that out.
So it's not actually, it's not actually a, it is a benefit because it shows that they can win on the road.
But I don't think that necessarily will sway anything.
I think the loss of Dobson is massive.
Anytime you lose a right shot, first pair of defensemen, that hurts.
And the fact that Montreal unlike Tampa didn't have anybody else that could step into that role.
Like, at least you lose headman in Tampa Bay on the left side.
Ryan McDonne is right there.
He can come in right away.
Even though Darren radish was the one that took over number one D responsibility.
It was, you know, McDonne came in and that was strong.
Sure, not holding down the second pair.
So like they had the next man up.
Whereas I feel like the Canadians.
The reason why they went to go and get a guy like Dobson is because on the right side.
It was an incredible black hole of like.
I'm not going to say nothingness, but they didn't have the quality necessary.
And the, the depth necessary that if they lost anybody on the right side of value.
That they could replace that player.
You know, adequately.
They'd have to shift somebody from the left.
So that's why when a player like Dobson becomes available because I've been told that you don't trade players like Noah Dobson.
That's the reason why the Canadians jumped and bounced at that opportunity.
Well, there's also a reason why the Canadians were looking to add another right shot defenseman.
Prior to the trade deadline.
Unfortunately, that didn't work out, but it's because what happens to if there's an injury to Noah Dobson.
And I think the answer right now when you look at the roster is.
Play Ryan backer, but the reality is that may not be optimal.
If your goal is to win every game and be make sure that that player leaves that series with confidence.
Right. So like, it's a delicate balancing act.
It's as simple as that.
You want to go over the first round matchups very quickly here.
I guess we could start with Philadelphia and the battle of Pennsylvania is on and on in a big way.
That's the same.
Where?
Where are my Montreal, my crossbeat of Montreal stands.
That's, that's, that's over.
The dream is I brought that up on the radio this week.
I'm like, you know, the penguins finishing second where they are Ovechkin.
I don't know if last night's win over Carolina was the, our Columbus, excuse me, was the end of Ovechkin's NHL career.
He picked up an assist on the game winning goal was that it is that it for the great aid and right into the hockey hall of fame for him.
But, you know, when I saw that, Ovechkin retires as a forever capital, you know,
Crosby's run and the penguins run this season.
I'm like, well, that's the nail in the coffin for me.
I am off the crossbeat of Montreal, Panwagon, as much as I was definitely on it.
I will admit that that's over with.
But I'll say this Sean.
Yeah.
I think that series is Pittsburgh's to win.
Okay.
So, yeah.
So you're take away from Philadelphia.
I mean, Porto Mortone's been fantastic point of game player.
They're strong.
They're a strong team.
Yeah.
On the wings.
And against the team like Montreal who right now really only has Nick Suzuki as a top nine center.
A legitimate top line top.
Okay.
Maybe I'm being a little harsh.
A legitimate top six center.
He is the only one at this time.
Mm hmm.
You know, I think that puts a lot of a lot of pressure.
Whereas if you look at Pittsburgh's center line.
Well, that's a completely different story.
Crosby is Crosby.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They have a lot of depth.
Kindle has been playing really well for them this season in that setup as well.
You know, one of the things that I also appreciate is Eric Carlson is playing like a number one defenseman again.
So they they have all the elements.
So right now it's.
Yeah.
Right now and the fourth line.
They probably have a combination of either Kevin Hayes or Tommy Novak.
So they have the elements.
And then you've seen players really elevate this year.
Like Anthony Manta had a fantastic season as well.
Brian Russ still around.
Yeah.
Brian Russ still around the team.
Justin Brazil is a nice revelation at the beginning of the season.
So this is a team that has its depth in every position.
Not crazy depth.
Nothing out of the ordinary except for.
What is an absolute steal of a trade for.
Yeah.
Genevieve.
Genevieve was fantastic this season for the Pittsburgh penguins.
They don't have anything to jumps off the page, but you will have the core.
You have Crosby.
You have Malcolm.
Russ is still there.
Carlson's playing out of his mind lately.
And you still have right behind Carlson.
One Chris Latange that's still there and Stuart Skinner has been playing well.
Yes.
Like they have the ability to get by the flyers.
I have that.
No, Chris that's it.
I find it clever.
You know a little bit about this series.
But it was really different.
Like that he's been there for just 8.
Crazy.
That she's been there 네.
That she's been there for nine years,
plastic matter.
Nothing out there is nice.
I'm not going to tell anybody what kind ofadenfreess Polish.
This is probably heralnya Marquine in terms of upfront Centro-hospital.
Let's start with the Wildcard teams.
You know, we started to feel delphy
because you just saw them last night
the Battle of Pennsylvania is always good.
The quote that always lives on for me is Sidney Crosby.
I just don't like them.
I don't like anybody on that team.
The Wildcard two, the Ottawa Senators are locked
into Wildcard two.
From what I've seen so far, knowing that the matchup
is set between them and Carolina,
they are the trendiest team for the upset
in the first round of the playoffs.
They also have, I believe the third shortest odds
in the Eastern Conference to get out of it.
What's your read in the early goings here
before a game has been played between Ottawa
and Carolina round number one?
First of all, Kudos to the Ottawa Senators.
I know a lot of people aren't gonna like this, but wow.
Yes.
What a turnaround.
Yep.
And to do so, where they were missing for most of that run,
four of their top six defensemen,
like it is out of this world, in my opinion,
the way that they've gone about balting themselves back up.
Carolina to me, paper, paper tiger.
Like a team that I feel took advantage of the weakness
of the Metropolitan Division all season.
And boy, was that division ever weak.
They do not respond.
We saw it with the Canadians.
They do not respond well to heavy forecheck
and physical play.
They don't write.
And their weakness at center,
I think, will be exposed as well.
Because as much as I've liked Logan Stan Kovan in the past,
he's not a number two center right now.
He isn't.
And I really like, I like Stan Kovan going back
to like his WHL days, you know?
So like, I appreciate the player.
And I feel like they have good all around depth
and brought Brindamore as him playing a very honest style of hockey.
But Tim Stutzler is playing out of his mind.
Agreed. Good point.
And then you factor in the physicality of guys like Cousins,
Brady Kachuk, Batherson, you know, those guys play really well.
And then defensively, they have the better defense.
I take the combination of Sanders and Zub Shabbat
before I take, why am I blanking on his name?
Oh, a ghost.
No, no, I mean, ghost is a great offensive defenseman,
but I think it's a slave and there you go.
Ghost, Slaven, what, Chatfield, Walker,
Nikeshin, the rookie, who I think is going to be fantastic,
but maybe not there yet.
Like, I think Ottawa wins that, you know, hands down.
And then it becomes a question of goal tending.
And I think that is where it will be played.
Easy as cop-out answer to give,
but I think that's where it's going to be played.
Because if you think about it,
if all Mark is all Mark and plays like all Mark,
he is a better goalie than Frederick Anderson.
Right.
He's a better goalie than Boosey.
Even though I mean, I mean, Boosey Bussey,
I mean, he's been on a little bit of a tear.
But what about just to that point, right?
Carolina style, Pox on net, Pox on net, Pox on net, Pox on net,
which brings, you know, the whole Linus Allmark factor
into playing a huge role in this series,
but as I mentioned off the top, Ottawa's very, very trendy pick.
Up next, the Buffalo Sabers,
the number one team from the NHL's Atlantic division,
they finished 50 wins with a game left
and 108 points so far.
They got the Boston Bruins in round number one.
Yeah, I just want to get to this question
and we'll get to the Bruins and the Saber, the Boston.
Praise for Ottawa's defense when they're top four were out
and they were still able to do it.
Where's the praise for the Habs?
Didn't Dopson play like 70, 78 games?
Didn't Hutson play 82 games?
Didn't Mathison play like...
Dopson played 80 games, bro.
Yeah, I don't understand.
I don't understand what you're talking about here.
And respectfully, if you have a follow up question
you want to make it precise, by all means, please explain,
but what do I have to praise them for other than the fact
that they were excellent all season?
In fact, they played through a lot of adversity.
The only defenseman that they were missing was Gooli.
Correct, Mathison played just under 80.
Dopson got 80, Hutson played every night.
Okay, well, that's it.
Okay, sorry, we'll continue to,
we'll continue our regular schedule programming.
I just want to make sure I wasn't crazy.
The Buffalo Sabers are an absolute wagon.
When you pro-rate their season, they ran away with the division
but that's not the reality.
They had their early season dip
and then never look back thinking,
oh, they peaked too early.
And just when you thought that, they just never stopped winning.
How big of a problem are the Sabers going to be
for the Bruins in Round 1?
Their defense, man.
Look, the eyes, they don't lie, Chico.
You look at that defense.
And it's, Rosmos Dallin is having a ridiculous year.
Yeah. Like, yeah, I know he's not, he doesn't have the point
totals of Elaine Hutson, but man, his overall impact
is right there.
He's got an MVP love, man.
Yeah.
And then you factor in, there's Owen Power,
who's becoming one of the better shut down
defensemen in the league.
Bowen Byram has elevated this year
to be a top-parent defenseman again.
You got Kesselring, you got Matthias Samuelson,
who had a ridiculous bounce back here.
And then they go and add some depth in Logan Stanley
and Luke Shen.
Sure.
So I feel like defensively, those are some big boys.
There's a lot of beef on that defensive core.
It's going to be very difficult for Boston
to get around them on a seven-game series
on a consistent basis, where I think Boston may win out here
in terms of the combination, though,
would be probably on the experience side,
a significant amount of playoff experience on the roster.
But I think, you know, the best forward,
the best defenseman, and the best goalie
are all on the Boston Bruins.
I think swimming is a better goalie
than Ukepeka-Lukinan.
I think that Charlie McAvoy is a better overall defenseman
than usually than Sandin.
I feel like Sandin is going to prove it contrary
to this playoffs.
And I feel like Pasternak is untouchable.
Correct.
Pasternak is untouchable.
As player in the series, best player in the series.
Best player in the series, so Boston,
and it's what's allowed them to get to the playoffs,
they have the game breaker at every position.
And that may be where they win out,
because if McAvoy and Lindholm are forced to go against Logan
Thompson, if that line is shut down, then it
becomes a question of how healthy is Josh Norris?
A question is all this time.
And then Michael McLeod, you know, like,
how do you go about positioning Michael McLeod in that lineup?
Or is it Ryan?
Is it Ryan?
It's Ryan.
It's Ryan.
I'm sorry.
It is Ryan.
It's Ryan McLeod.
I always make this mistake with Buffalo.
But I feel like, you know, the fact that Josh Norris is not
dependable.
And, you know, I've spoken to a lot of people
around the auto senators about him,
and even folks in Buffalo are kind of tentative.
But if Josh Norris is able to stay healthy,
I give the center line matchup to Buffalo.
Oh, you do.
I mean, Lindholm and Zach is having another strong season too,
right?
Zach is mostly playing like wing center.
Like it's it's open.
It's out in it's.
They have a couple of guys like that too, right?
Yeah, exactly.
That's that's what I say.
Having a litter of centers that you can play then on the wing.
If need be like, that's the Boston Bruins strength.
All right, good stuff.
There's your kind of like east of a very,
very quick run through of the Eastern Conference
in the first round matchup.
Of course, we'll have the deeper context
when it comes to the Canadians and the Lightning
with all signs pointing to that series
opening up from Tampa Bay with the smart bunny
being Sunday afternoon.
There are four playoff games on tap on on Sunday
from the early afternoon right through the late evening
the 930 game.
So buckle up, buck a ruse.
It's playoff time.
And now the real season begins very much looking forward
to covering it extensively and, you know, interacting
with our always engaging and loyal audience here
on Star and Domingo, which by the way reminds me, Marco,
we are now less than 150 subs away from hitting
at 15,000 subscriber milestone.
So congrats everybody.
You guys are doing a lot of heavy lifting.
We appreciate it.
Thank you so much.
Yes, again, we will be pushing to hit 15,000
before the end of the month.
That is the goal.
We also want to say to keep an ear out
because we will be doing another live show at McLean's
public house.
Public house this time, yeah.
Yes, public house this time.
We will be playing the show on the speakers in the bar.
So you guys will be able to listen in
and we'll be able to then take in the game with you guys.
Simply just a question of the league putting out
their schedule.
That'd be nice.
So it would be nice.
So yes, first round, if it starts,
we would be at McLean's either on the road.
So we'll let you know, but it's either going to be Sunday
afternoon, Tuesday night, or if my math serves me correct,
Thursday, Saturday, Monday, the following day,
so following week.
So just keep an ear out.
We will let you know as soon as we know,
which from what I gather is probably going to be
finalized by the end of tonight.
I don't you feel a little like a little.
There's still NHL hockey being played, you know,
like these it's more or less, I don't, I don't,
I don't make these schedules, man.
Oh, clearly, I wasn't aware of that.
Thank you.
No, but at the same time, like this marathon season,
yes, I'm so thankful it's not happening again next season.
Like yes, they're playing 84 games,
but the season is starting on September 29th.
That's right.
It's finishing on April 15th.
And there is no three week catch up
because of the Olympics in there.
Yes, there's a week off for the for the all-star game,
Big Tickle, but you're playing 84 games.
You're adding two weeks at the beginning of the season
because usually the season started on like October 10th.
Now it starts on the 29th, so you gain two weeks.
So there's going to be way less back-to-backs.
Our calmer, even the players were like completely gassed
at the end of this.
I'm a nothing.
I just follow them and I'm a journalist,
but like even we're like done, like it's exhausting.
So I'm very happy that we go back to a normal formula now
and that it'll be a far healthier set up
as early as next season.
Congrats to Nathan McKinnon for scoring another empty net goal
to lock down the Rocket Recharge trophy
as much as Coffee will try yesterday with 10 shots on goal,
but Too Baddy couldn't do that with Team Canada.
Chief shot, I know Marco's upset.
I don't want to, Too Baddy is too bad.
Can't be shooting that kind of shade at good halagonians.
I'd be right.
I love that city, the Maritime's largest city.
I've been there many times, I love that place
and I know it's near and dear to your heart as well
and we have a lot of Maritime listeners.
Proud Maritime is good people in this country, no doubt.
All right, brother, good stuff as always.
Looking forward to the rest of the week
and then getting ready for playoff action
and starting to Miko will be all over in life.
Playoffs.
Playoffs.
You finally did it.
Now we get to say it for real.
All right, man, enjoy your day.
Enjoy your Wednesday, everybody.
We'll see you soon.
