Morning Run with Amy and TJ
An iHeart radio podcast
Hey there everyone and welcome to Morning Run
It is Monday
March 2nd I'm Amy Robock
And I'm TJ Holmes
And we want to get you right to some updates
We are actually just getting in the past several minutes before recording this
We are on this run going to make stops in several places
Austin, Greenville, South Carolina, Boulder, Los Angeles
And even in Woodsboro
But we need to start right now with a statement
We're just getting from US Central Command
They are confirming that three US fighter jets
Were shot down in Kuwait by the Kuwaitis
They are describing this as a friendly fire incident
The video is everywhere it is dramatic
And the set com statement that just was released states
That yes, three US F-15E strike eagles flying in support of Operation Epicury
Went down over Kuwait due to an apparent friendly fire incident
During active combat that included attacks from Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones
The US Air Force fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses
All six air crew ejected safely have been safely recovered
And are in stable condition
Kuwait has acknowledged this incident
And we are grateful for the efforts of the Kuwaiti defense forces
And their support in this ongoing operation
They say the cause of the incident is under investigation
And they will release additional information when it becomes available
Good to hear they're okay
This happens we see it in war rose but those pictures is more
We're awfully dramatic some of you may have seen them already
But you see in particular one jet just falling flat in a spin going down to the ground
Amazing all of them we're told are stable and gonna be okay
It is remarkable that they were able to eject safely in time
I want to continue on the run now
The Pentagon also confirmed Sunday
The first US military deaths in the war with Iran
They were killed in action according to the Defense Department
And the New York Times is reporting they died after a US base in Kuwait once again was attacked
Now this all comes afterward this weekend that Iran's supreme leader
And dozens of other members of the Iranian leadership were killed in the US Israeli attacks
President Trump posted another address to social media late yesterday
In which he promised America will avenge their deaths
But he also cautioned Americans that quote, sadly
There will likely be more before it ends
That's the way it is
The president also mentioned I just thought this was interesting ropes
He said in his initial statement announcing that the war was on
Speaking to members of the revolutionary guard
Speaking to military members in Iran
Put down your arms and give up or face certain death
And you will have immunity
He said in these comments they're calling by the thousands wanting to give up
Now it seemed like it was an ad lived part of his comments
But who are they calling? Where are they calling? What is that?
He said they're calling by the thousands wanting to put down their arms and give up
It's unclear what that actually means or is specifically referencing
Well President Trump and the remaining Iranian leadership
Don't seem to be on the same page about negotiating away out of this war
The president commented during an interview Sunday
That he's still ready and willing to talk to the Iranians
But the Iranian security chief Ali Larjani suggests Iran is not ready and willing to talk
And I quote here, we will not negotiate with the United States
That's about as clear as it gets and his statement was posted to his official ex accounts
I want to continue on the run this is still a run war adjacent here
But a mass shooting in Austin
Happened on Sundays being investigated now as a possible act of terrorism
The shooting left two people dead another 14 in the hospital
This all happened around 2 a.m. at a bar in the heart of the downtown Austin party scene
Authorities say the suspect was circling the block several times before he eventually rolled down his window
And fired on people who were partying on the outdoor patio
Yes and they never got out of his vehicle and that part of the shooting
But then drove to a parking lot nearby got out of that vehicle with a rifle
And started shooting people who were walking down the street
Now this suspect was eventually shot and killed in a confrontation with police identified as 53-year-old in Diaga
Diagné someone at the HSS Department of Homeland Security
DHS I should say it came into this country in 2000 from Senegal eventually married an American citizen
But has what did become a naturalized US citizen
Yes and next up on the run another mass shooting in Cincinnati sent nine people to the hospital
But authorities say those nine thankfully do not have life threatening injuries
This also early morning hour Sunday at a crowded nightclub in the city's east end neighborhood as of this recording
No suspects and police have not identified a motive in this one
All right and next up on the run our hearts are going out to the campus community at the University of Colorado
That school and in particular the football team are mourning the death of quarterback Dominic Ponder
Yeah the backup QB died in a single vehicle crash
Yesterday police say he was driving a Tesla Model 3 when he lost control
Some of the details they give are pretty horrific
It sounds like an awful crash they do believe speed was involved
But hit a guardrail hit a pole then ended up down in embankment
And the car caught on fire just sounds awful
But only one vehicle involved in this accident
Wow and Ponder was just 23 years old he was a transfer student who served yes as backup quarterback
Coach Deon Sanders called him one of his favorites just an awful awful story
An incredibly sad story edible
We always know how campus communities are impacted like this to have a young person die
So suddenly and just it's it's an awful one and of course this we people don't know your your daughter is a sophomore
Out there at Boulder now and and we haven't talked to her about this yet
She'll be waking up to this news and certainly this will be something that so many folks will be talking about
Look you know cars are the deadliest weapons we have in this country
And people talk about guns all the time but yes it's always so deeply concerning with cars and speed
So we certainly hope that people just slow down and realize how much it's important to just remember your safety when you're on the roads
All right next leg of our run will take us to South Carolina
Reverend Jesse Jackson getting a final farewell in the state where he was born
Jackson passed away February 17th at the age of 84
He's now going to lie in state at the South Carolina Capitol today
Yes there have been events honoring his life that began last week in his hometown of Chicago
That's of course also the hometown of his rainbow push coalition
After South Carolina Jesse Jackson will return to Chicago for a memorial service
And that'll be the big one where we will see so many people showing up there
To honor the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson
All right next up on the run Michael Jordan just pulled off another three
Pete of sorts and has made NASCAR history
Jordan's race team and in particular his driver Tyler reddick has now won the first three races of the NASCAR season
That has never happened before
This is not like a basketball team in the NBA
We won our first three games no no no this is a different beast
This has never happened before he won the circle of the Americas race in Austin yesterday
Just a week after winning in Atlanta and before that the big one
He won the season opening Daytona 500 and you know Tyler reddick's name not because
Necessarily of the driver he is but the controversy I guess we should say after that whole video with
Michael Jordan celebrating with his son after the Daytona 500
Just gave a little tug on a shorts little pat on the back whatever you want to call it
I'm glad that controversy went away pretty quickly and there's a cool picture everybody will remember
Michael Jordan in his first three pete he's sitting by himself with the NBA trophy
Championship trophy and he's putting up three fingers after a three pete
Tyler reddick is holding the trophy and putting up three fingers and they put those two images next each other
It's kind of cool
I mean that's just remarkable for Michael Jordan to have had the career he said
And now yes just still winning
It's what he does all right folks
We'll stay with us here on this Monday morning run when we come back a wonderful
And deserved honor for Catherine O'Hara last night will explain what happened there also explain what happened
When Michael be Jordan and Delroy Lindo get back on the stage at an award show
Hope it went different this time and we'll tell you what we spent money on this weekend
We put our money on a big winner at the box office
It's tax season and by now I know we're all a bit tired of numbers
But here's an important one you need to hear $16 billion
That's how much money and refunds the IRS flagged for possible identity fraud

Welcome back to this Monday morning run
And it was a bittersweet moment last night in Los Angeles
Catherine O'Hara posthumously won a Best Actress Award
At the 32nd Annual Acting Awards
We say the 32nd Annual Acting Awards
It also used to be called the Screen Actor Guild Awards
Why do they change it? The Sag Awards?
We all know that
I really don't know was it a marketing thing?
Was it a branding thing? Screen Actress Guild?
Maybe people don't know what that is but acting awards sound so general
Yes and people know what Sag is like the Sag Awards
Anyway O'Hara was honored for her role in Apple TV's The Studio
We need to finish watching these episodes
We just got going late to the party
Yes we are
But immediately she is the star of the show
You just can't help it
You don't take your eyes off of her in this show
It's not Rogen who created the show except it on her behalf
And in a touching speech encourage people
Who might have people in their lives that don't know about her
To have them watch one of her films
He actually mentioned specific scenes from some of the movies
And he said when they watched it and as they're laughing
You say this to them
That's Catherine O'Hara
And we were lucky that we got to live in a world where she so generously shared her talents with us
It was a cool moment
Listening to Seth Rogen talk about Catherine O'Hara reminded me of you
He talked about how yes, about how her brilliance and her just constant working mind
He said he didn't want to tell any other actresses
Because he didn't want them to get any ideas
But he said literally after every rehearsal they would come back
And she would have sent them an email saying for your consideration
And would have ways to rewrite her entire scene
And he said in every damn time it was better
It made the scene better
It made the show better
And he just said that was her brilliance
Literally her mind was constantly on fire and she was constantly rewriting
And it reminded me of you
Yeah, as soon as I read that I got tearful just remembering her brilliance but also thinking of yours
Oh my goodness, great
All right
We will cut this out
You all, she is not in any way comparing talent of Catherine O'Hara to any possible semblance of talent
I actually am, but okay
Next up on the run we stay in Hollywood at the Actors Awards
That's okay, I guess that's what we're calling them
And it was a very different award show
One week later for Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo actor
Actor Michael B. Jordan
And the sinners cast came out on top in the final weeks before the Oscars
Yeah, Michael B named best actor for his dual roles as twin brothers in sinners
He beat it out, he beat it out
I mean, the usual cast of characters
And we've seen all of these Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothy Chalamet
Jesse Plemons, Ethan Hawke
And there was a couple of other names
Those are the big ones
Yeah
Who's the guy, I'm sorry, the foreign language film, I can't remember your name
I am never coming up with that
He pulled off a couple of upsets, but again, this has been cool
But Michael B. Jordan said the ride has been unbelievable
Thank you for welcoming me in and making me feel seen
Y'all know how I feel about y'all
Yeah, it was very sweet
He paid homage to all the other actors in his category
He was very humble, it was a beautiful speech
And then when sinners won best ensemble
By the way, up against the cast of one battle after another
Frankenstein hamnet, Marty Supreme
Jordan's co-star Delroy Lindo said
Making sinners was an incredible journey
He said every single day we brought ourselves, our hearts, our souls to this endeavor
Yeah, just a day earlier at the NAACP Image Awards
Lindo made his first public comments
Since that whole inward controversy
When the man with Tourette shouted that out at him and Michael B
When they were on stage at the BAFTA Awards
He said, quote, before we start
I'd like to officially say we appreciate I appreciate
We appreciate all the support and the love that we have been shown
In the aftermath of what happened last weekend
And it means a lot to us as an honor to be here amongst our people this evening
It's a classic case of something that could have been very negative
Becoming very positive
Hmm
I love that and then he received a standing ovation
I just thought that was cool
They didn't say anything in the aftermath
It was very negative for this moment
And it was so perfectly said
It was a nice moment at the NAACP Image Awards
That we mentioned here happened as well
And Dion Cole was a comedian who did that at the top of the show
He acknowledged that he was saying a prayer to the group
Probably mostly black folks in NAACP
He said, let us bow our heads in prayer
He said, please, if there are any white men in the audience with Tourette's
Please, Lord, get to them
It's not going to go the way they think it's going to go
He made a funny comment everybody laughed
You know what?
It was cool
That's incredibly cool because they...
You know what?
It's Michael B. Jordan, it's Delward Linda
Just for them to be able to celebrate the love that they felt
Versus that hateful word
That's pretty impressive
And I'm glad they didn't acknowledge the guy at all, right?
Nope
Because he didn't acknowledge them
Yep
That seems about right
Wow
I feel my heart rate going up again
Okay, next up
All right, how about this for the final leg of our run
We happily contributed our $47
To the $97 million
Opening of Scream
Seven at the box office
Biggest in their franchise history
From Markable
From Markable opening
This broke 30 years ago
Scream was 30 years ago
The personal
And 97
Movies later, Nev Campbell was a big draw
Yes, because they lost the other two big stars
Barara and she got fired for something she said about Palestine
Yes
And then what was it?
Genoa Tega
Was a part of the franchise as well
She's not back so they brought back Nev Campbell
And something worked
However, it didn't work on critics
It has actually pretty awful reviews
In the 30s on Run Tomatoes, I believe
But audience review is high up there, right?
78% or so
So ghost phase no matter what
It's proved to be an enduring big screen killer
$97 million in the opening
I think 30 of that came from overseas
Yeah, we went and checked it out
We see what the critics mean about the criticism
But yeah, it is
You know what, you know what you're getting
And I think that's why we went into it
Even with the bad reviews saying
You know what, we get the formula, we get the franchise
And I even said this
Look, the acting was amazing
It wasn't scary
I mean, you kind of know
But I thought the first five minutes were wildly entertaining
And every single actor who was a part of that movie was phenomenal
No offense to anybody else
But this might have been the best ensemble cast in a Scream Seven
And in a Scream movie
This might have been
I'm trying to think to some others
This might, these were talented folks
And hey, even if the script wasn't A++, the acting was
Yes, that is very, very true
All right, our quote
And no offense to the script writer
I'm just trying to
Yeah, you know, I think we've gotten used to horror has now taken
It's elevated
They have so many movies, like even sinners
Let's talk about that
Just taking the genre of horror and making it
It's not just some throwaway script, these are...
Weapons?
Yes, interesting
Edge of your seat, what's going to happen next?
Throwing in all sorts of, you know, just really incredible twists and turns
The game has been...
It has been increased since Scream started 30 years ago
But every once in a while, you know, a palette cleanser
A white woman running through the forest and tripping over the one log
You know what? I like that
Every once in a while, you still need that
There was a palette cleanser, I appreciate that
All right, with all of this crazy news out there
I saw this on Instagram actually yesterday
And it made my shoulders just actually fall down
And so I wanted to have this as our quote of the day on this Monday
With all that's taken place over the weekend
Don't forget to imagine the best case scenario too
Yeah, that's it
I love that
I felt like we need this quote in our lives today
Everyone, I know we all get...
It's overwhelming, it's scary, we've got terror threats and heightened alerts
And we're at war and Americans are dying and people around the world are dying
And it's just we see F-16s falling out of the sky
This is scary stuff
Don't forget to imagine the best case scenario too
It's important, there is hope, there is positivity in the world
It took me a little while and it takes a little training
But how many times in your life do you say, okay, I got to prepare for the worst case scenario
I've got to prepare for the worst case scenario, worst case scenario
We barely ever stop and think, okay, what if this does work out?
Yeah, and I think so
I'll take, I'll say this, sometimes we think we don't want to jinx it
Right, somehow we get superstitious
But that is a silly notion, I'm Gabby Bursting
We love to mention her at least once a week
But this whole notion of manifesting things good in your life
So yes, let's focus on if we're going to have our energy or our thoughts
Consume for something, let's imagine the best case scenario
Let's imagine it all working out
All right, today is going to work out, I like that, I appreciate that one today, babe
All right, and with that everyone, thank you for running with us
I'm Amy Robach
And I'm TJ Holmes again, look for a number of updates here in our feed
Today we'll be updating you here shortly expecting a Pentagon press briefing
This morning after we listen to that a lot of news likely going to come out
You can look for another update from us on our feed here
But we always appreciate you running with us, I'm TJ Holmes and we will talk to you also
Did you say your name already?
I did already
Okay, well, don't know who she is, I'm TJ, see you all soon
This is Chelsea, handler from Dear Chelsea
After the big game like most people, I kept thinking about the commercials
And there was one that stayed with me
It was from the Blue Square Alliance against hate and it wasn't loud or flashy
It showed a Jewish kid being targeted at school
And another student who chose not to ignore it
As someone who was Jewish that moment felt very real to me
Not dramatic, just familiar
And what struck me was how clearly it showed that hate doesn't always announce itself
But the impact is still huge
If you saw the Blue Square spot during the big game, it's worth thinking about
And if you want to show support, sharing the Blue Square is one small way to do that
