Murder In Moscow: What We Knew About The Surviving Roommates In The Early Stages

About this episode

In the immediate aftermath of the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, attention quickly turned to the two roommates who had survived the attack: Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke. Both women had been inside the King Road house when the killings occurred but had not been physically harmed, a fact that initially created enormous public curiosity because so little was known about what had happened inside the residence. Early reporting identified Mortensen and Funke as University of Idaho students who lived with the victims and noted that police did not consider them suspects. At that stage, authorities were still saying the surviving roommates had been asleep during the murders and had awakened later that morning, when friends were eventually summoned to the house and a 911 call was placed from one of the roommates’ phones. The identities of the survivors and the simple fact that two people had been left alive inside a house where four others had been stabbed to death became one of the earliest mysteries surrounding the case.

The reporting also underscored how incomplete the public understanding of the case was during those first days. There was no publicly identified suspect, no known motive and no explanation for why Mortensen and Funke had survived while the other four were killed. Police said they had spoken with the surviving roommates and were working to reconstruct the timeline, but they released very little about what the women may have heard or seen. Much of that early narrative would later change dramatically after Bryan Kohberger’s arrest, when court records revealed that Mortensen had actually been awake, had heard activity inside the house and had seen a masked man dressed in black walking past her bedroom. Looking back, the early reporting on Mortensen and Funke captured just how little investigators were willing to disclose at the beginning and how substantially the known story of the surviving roommates would evolve as the case developed.

What's up everyone and welcome back to the program. We're getting some more information from Moscow Idaho about the two roommates who were home while all of this took place. Now the police are saying that these two people, these two girls who were home when this happened, they're not suspects and that they're cooperating with the police. But it was one of the main questions I had earlier. How in the hell can you be home and not hear this? Well in this article we're about to read, a neighbor who doesn't live in the house obviously didn't hear anything either. So how in the hell did this go down and how were these four young people murdered the way that they were with nobody knowing and no one being the wiser and will these roommates have anything to offer the police and their investigation. My guess is they will. So let's get in here and let's see what the daily mail has dug up. The two roommates who escaped death when their four friends were fatally stabbed and

blood soaked frenzy at the University of Idaho off campus rental are revealed. As neighbors say the home was known as the party house. I don't put too much stock in that. That can be you know pretty open ended. What does that mean a party house? People are there drinking beer, people are hanging out watching the ballgame. What does that even mean? Do people get arrested there all the time? That would be significant. But if people just hang out and party and whatever. Although it does mean there's a lot of traffic in and out of that house. So maybe a stranger came in at some point. Again, who knows all in the preliminary stages. But I thought that it was pretty interesting that the neighbor says they didn't hear anything either because I'm saying to myself how do the people in the house not hear anything. And then the neighbor says well I didn't hear anything. So that makes me reevaluate that line of thought. This article was authored by Ruth Stiles. The two University of Idaho students who survived the crazed knife attack that left four of

their friends dead at their shared off campus rental house are 21 year olds Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funk. DailyMail.com can reveal. Some couples Anna Kernodal and Ethan Chapin both 20 and best friends Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves both 21 all died in the savage slaying in the early hours of Sunday morning. On Wednesday police revealed both Dylan and Bethany were in the modest Moscow home at the time of the attack but miraculously survived the carnage. Now did the person who did this not know they were there? It's definitely a likelihood without knowing the layout of the apartment or you know where the bedrooms are located or whatever kind of difficult to know where they could have hidden but obviously they hid somewhere and weren't found by this person. Speaking to dallymail.com Idaho State Police spokesman Aaron Snell said the two survivors

are helping police with their investigation but would not give further details of how they survived or whether either Dylan or Bethany called 911 later on Sunday morning. Alright so still there's a lot to be unraveled and unwrapped here and we're at the first layer and a lot of the things we learn or think we know now are obviously going to change as this investigation continues to evolve but as of right now this is where we're at as far as these roommates. He also told dallymail.com the pair are not suspects but said every possibility is being looked at by the investigative team which now includes detectives from Idaho State Police and the FBI as well as the Moscow Police Department. So who knows what he means by that every possibility is being looked at you would think in every investigation every possibility would be looked at right. So obviously there's more here there's more to the story about these two gals that survived

and what's going on with them as far as their conversations with the police or what they might know if they made the phone call for 911 we still don't know any of that. Neither Dylan who's from Boise Idaho nor Bethany a member of sorority five beta five have responded to messages from dallymail.com and both have locked their social media profiles. But both girls appear frequently on accounts that belong to Madison and Kaylee including a poignant Instagram post made by Madison on August 16th that shows all five girls together posing happily on the back porch of the home where three of them died on Sunday and this is just such a sad story. You have all of these young people wrapped up in this for of them who lost their lives and now these other two well according to the police they're not suspects right so they're suffering a trauma too. Obviously they lost some friends has to be a very brutal scene for them and with media attention

I can see why you would close down your social media now of course there's still a lot of answers I mean a lot of questions that have to be answered and a lot of gaps and timelines and how this can all occur and why nobody called the cops until the next day or whatever at noon so yeah there's a lot of questions that still need to be answered for sure. The two girls appear in photos posted by Kaylee hours before she died which she captions one lucky girl to be surrounded by these people every day. Another set of photos showing Dylan and Kylie together was posted last Friday night and shows the pair dressed up for a night out and when you look through these pictures you know regular old college kids right any kind of college kids you could possibly imagine going out for the night party and wearing their you know a fraternity or sorority clothing hanging out on the back patio and I know the neighbors said oh it's a party house and I

get that but we're talking about college kids here college kids drink college kids have friends over to play beer upon. So besides it being a transient you know kind of situation I don't see there being you know any issue with them having parties at their house. A similar collection of pictures was posted the same day by Madison and show her cheerfully posing with both Bethany and Dylan together with Zana the Quintana appeared to have enjoyed an active social life that included nights out in Moscow and parties at their off campus home. So somebody might have come to one of these parties like we said a minute ago and you know cased it out and said look I'm going to come back here or met somebody at the bar or or or right and that's where we're at unfortunately we can speculate until the cows come home about what went down but until we get some more details that's all it's going to be is pure speculation.

A neighbor who lives in an apartment block next door and asked not to be named said the property was notable for coming and goings often late at night. He said there's always parties at the house and people going in and out and there's usually some noise from there but I didn't hear anything on Sunday morning no screaming no gunshots nothing and this is what made me take pause about you know how the girls hear this in the house or did they hear it and they hid because they were scared. I mean I can certainly see that scenario playing out in fact I can see a bunch of different scenarios playing out but until we have some more facts it's a fool's errand to you know go through all of them because all we really do know is that these young people are dead and these people or person is still out there so that's what should be the focus at this point. Outside the property trash left over from the residence final parties could still be seen among the debris beer cans and white claw hardselts are packaging.

Chapin who spent his final night at a campus party with girlfriend Zana was a regular visitor to the home but did not live there instead residing at the Sigma Chi fraternity house around a hundred yards away so he lived at the frat house about a hundred yards away from where these girls lived and where he was staying the night. Bailey and Madison spent their final night at a downtown Amoscale bar police said and were captured on a twitch live stream purchasing a portion of carbonara pasta from a food truck at approximately one forty five a.m. on Sunday morning just hours before they were murdered. The creepy footage shows the pair talking to a group of men lingering behind them before setting off for the mile long walk home neither Dylan nor Bethany were with them and their movements on the night of the slangs remain unclear so there still holes in the timeline still gaps in it and the authorities are still trying to fill those gaps starting to come together a little bit we're getting a little more information so that means the authorities

obviously have more than that. Police said they're establishing a timeline of events including the visit to the food truck but were criticized by Latak County prosecutor Bill Thompson who said cops insistence the community is safe is at odds with the statements released and yeah that's just common sense I think anyone with a brain in their head would see this is a bad idea to say the community is safe when that's really far from the truth. He told CBS obviously there's no way the police can say there's no risk but what they're seeing indicates that there's not a risk this person will randomly attack people he added I don't think they're going to foreclose the possibility that it could be one or more people but right now they don't know who is responsible discussing the food truck footage Thompson added they're in the process of identifying the other people who were there and what sort of contact did they have. Mogen, Goncalblitz, Kernodal and Chapin died in the early hours of Sunday morning and were

found around 11.30 am by a friend possibly Dylan or Bethany. So still we don't know who found them remember we don't know who even made the 911 call yet at least we haven't seen it in the articles we have covered now that information might be floating out there but until it's in one of these articles and talked about it I don't really you know dive too deep into the he said she said that's why I use these articles to guide our conversations so we stay on the right path right. On Tuesday daily mail dot com reveal that police on the scene described it as one of the worst they've ever seen and blood could be seen oozing through the wall on the second floor of the home. You can see the pictures here they're pretty pretty brutal and pretty pretty scary honestly blood seeping through the wall. It literally looks like something you would see in one of these like slasher flicks it's really disturbing. On Tuesday police were seen collecting the contents of trash cans close to the home as part

of the search for the edge weapon they believed was used in the killings the trash was taken to a local garbage depot where has matted suited cops were seen sifting through the garbage bags and a screened off shed so it looks like they're doing their due diligence at least going through the evidence and looking for clues wherever they think they can find them. Now let's hope they get some results real soon as far as we go here on the podcast I wanted to make sure that we added this to the catalog got it up there today that way we're rolling along like I said earlier if something of note pops up I want to get it added to the catalog quickly that way we can keep it moving and kind of have an idea on where things are at in this case because this is a crazy one and these people let's remember the most important part here is these four young people who were murdered they need justice and their family need answers and the community as a whole needs to know that there's not a murderer amongst them so hopefully with the next update I could tell you that they

have somebody in custody or suspect or something like that but until then we'll continue laying the groundwork here so we can follow along with the story in hopes that we don't have to make too many more episodes.
