All right, we're finally there. Not only is it football Friday with a full slate of high school football tonight, but it is college football weekend, not week zero opening weekend. We get Iowa and Iowa state. Well, everybody in action this weekend, Andy. Yeah, yeah, we're off and running a lot of games last night. Yeah, we get to some of that officially game week and the whole the whole shabang. You know, I mean, it doesn't really start this weekend. Well, Hassel tried to make the argument on two guys that this is the sneaky best weekend of college football because not only do you get out there and you tailgate and you have the opening game and the anticipation and footballs back, but you don't compete with the NFL at all. Like college football will next weekend. I don't I don't buy that it's the best weekend, but I get the point that maybe it's a little underrated despite the mostly bad matchups. Well, the best thing that it has going for it is that it's first and everybody's right to get out there and you've missed it and you're dying in the heat.

Yeah, I mean, dry right at this point where we're used to the heat. All you want is it for it to be dry. You don't expect it to be cool. But it's like there's so much build up and then you get into the stadium and you kick off and then it all just kind of because the game is really only interesting from the standpoint of your holding your breath that your team doesn't look terrible. Right. You'd like to see a few new players and that's about it. Right. I mean, you're not looking at a matchups. You don't care about the opponent. You don't know anything about the opponent for the most parts. There's a few interesting ones here and there, but it's just not a you're just hoping your your team doesn't piss down their leg. Right. And with that. True. That's that's that's not that's not the spirit of the game. But I'll estate. You want to see your own team. It's not just like seeing how you look or you don't really know these guys for the most part. So I think there is an interest in there.

The the heat index will reach around 97 couple hours before kickoff today. And David Warrington just told me that Colfax Mingo is pushing its game back to 8 p.m. to start a little bit later because of the heat. I know I and I will estate have moved some things around not football, but some other athletic events have been moved around this weekend to later start times or earlier start times. So check on your start times and here in the comments if you're following us on YouTube or Facebook or or X Twitter. And you hear about a game being moved. Let us know and and we'll check on that because some are being moved. Some late calls are being made on some of these games moving late. But right now we'll get Murphy and Andy started here on Friday. For over 150 years, one name has echoed across generations, a name that turned imagination into belief. Ringling brothers and born and barely. And as the world changed, so did we. Because legends don't disappear. They evolve from tradition to reinvention.

Every moment reminds us why this is still the greatest show on earth. On the Murf and Andy show is brought to you in part by Ramsey Subaru, home of the toughest most reliable cars in the world and the people who backed them up on Hickman Road in Urbandale. A time shoot all campers. Keith Murphy, what I do have are very particular set of skills. Skills I've acquired for a very long career. Andy fails. I'm telling you straight to my way or the highway powered by a D. Josh the big outside. Murphy and Andy live in on demand across Iowa everywhere from the Channel C Studios. Guest House Tavern and Oyster and Westamoyne sets the table for today's sports and more. It's surf and turf night. Probably won't be a lot of people out on the deck today, so call ahead if you're looking for reservations.

Coming up LSU versus the world Rutgers implodes. Sipker Rips Big Red. But let's begin with a Simo versus Iowa State at noon and Northern Illinois versus Iowa at 3.15 pm. I think the Hawkeye game Ed said will actually be hotter because of the time of day starting there. These are both places. Hydration being urged. Don't overdo it. Mix in a water. Some electrolytes as you go. We've been here before, but this is what this is like early August type temperatures. I mean, we get these in September. We've been close to records last week. It is legit hot. I've been out for quite a while today. It's not only hot. It's like all the grass is just crunchy and fried and dead and you get big cracks in the yard and stuff. You just everything just feels extra parched. We will be out at PCM today tonight.

As I recall, I used to drive right by there on my way back and forth from St. Louis back when Old Highway 163 ran right by the school. All through those towns, Prairie City, Monroe, and Oatley and Pella. The field was just right off that old highway. As I remember, it just presents itself to the southern sun. It's going to be hot over there. You're going to feel it. There's football. There's no way that you're going to... It's bleachers. It's stuff going on and the tailgate lots or the parking lots. You're not going to get... There's no dugout. Anybody can duck under. Tomorrow, up at Jack Tristadium, Iowa State is a 29-point favoritor. Depending on what line you look at, which is somewhat interesting and how you could even establish a line for this game. We just don't know. Iowa State has more than 80 new football players, one or two returning starters.

It's so difficult to know. You're going based on the difference in programs. The fact that the game is in Ames that Iowa State has a capable D1 quarterback, which is no small thing. Jalen Rainer, but you really don't know. Seymour, the most attention Seymour's gotten. Southeast Missouri is doing a drill that used to be done in the 1970s or 80s or like three guys kill the ball carrier. It just looks like something you don't see anymore, but they've gotten a lot of attention for that this week, for that drill that they still run in practice. 29 points is the line there. If you're going to this game, Andy, what cyclone fan, what do you want to see? You just want to see total domination and feel like there's a hint of hope going into Iowa City? Well, yeah, I mean, that would be the ultimate. I think you probably have to back down the expectations a little bit and just say,

you know, I'd like to see you want to see Rainer look like a good quarterback. I mean, I think that's first and foremost. You want to look, you want it to be a clean game from your team. You don't want it to look like it's a mess and a bunch of penalties and flubs out on the field. You just want to fund a mental. That's a lot of just praises. Yeah, you want it to look like Jimmy Rogers has full control of this team and they're listening to him and they believe in him. And he has a lot of players that already know him. So you know, or knew him before the year. So I mean, that that could happen. You don't you want to go to halftime feeling good. Right? I mean, I think that's probably the first bar to clear. You want to go to halftime feeling like, okay, we're definitely going to win. He's he's preached physical football defensive football run football just fundamentals discipline. So you want to see that on display. Northern Illinois is bad. This is a 31 and a half point spread despite Iowa still not naming a starting quarterback and making it clear that both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hicklensky will play.

I guess that's the most intriguing thing going in is which one who will end up looking better and therefore get the start in the Sihock rivalry game the following week. We'll be watching that got a new kicker and it's not the kicker everyone expected. It's the walk on kicker that beat out the transfer. So that was a surprise got another Australian punter. So keep an eye on that L. J. Phillips the best interview so far this season. Let's see him run the football some behind that really talented offensive line. The offensive line should be great despite losing three players to the NFL, but that's kind of what Iowa usually is. So what am I missing here? What else you want to see as you watch this Iowa game because I don't see any way this game is close. I mean yeah we have seen slow starts in the past from Iowa games like this and it looked like they should just dominate and it gives you kind of a there are a bit of a harbinger for the rest of the year.

If they don't just come out and dominate. So I think I mean I will not be surprised if I was razor sharp to begin with. And then it takes them into the third quarter to just really open up the blowout but I want to see again I want to see them go into half time. This looking comfortable like the fans don't have to worry about anything in the second half like you've got a quarterback that say I don't I mean there's only so much you can see against this opponent right. I mean if he's really good if if if if he's really good against this team what is that what does that really tell you. I mean not a whole lot I mean a little but I mean I'm really good to yeah yeah if you yeah if Hank Brown started and he looked really let's say Hank Brown just play the whole game. And any look good any look at what would that would that stop the fans from wondering about Jeremy Hicklinski and stop the fans saying yeah but they were playing Northern Illinois now I mean.

It's a fans think he has a bigger upside they just they they like his I don't know they just like his whole persona more his his look is his big heart because he's the unknown and we are a little bit of Hank Brown last year and you didn't blow us away so I don't know I mean you you just both of these games you want. Everybody to have fun get excited for football again avoid any kind of scare you know any anything that would make you you want to just like forget about this game right you want to like move on as soon as it's over you just want to move on. We want to set we selfishly we want to go into RV TV week with both teams being 1 to 0 we have gone into that week some years where one or the other team was upset I mean most most famously I don't know or infamously if you're a cyclone fan. Iowa State under Jean Chizek had lost to I'm going by memory here one of the cyclone fans will correct me if I'm wrong I think it was Kent State or Kent whatever they call these days upset Iowa State at Jack Dry Stadium in game one.

Iowa came in with like a ranked team and looked pretty good on opening weekend so I can remember being out on RV TV that week we weren't even doing the usual cliched asking Hawkeye fans who's going to win and asking cyclone fans who's going to win because I'm not going to win. It was kind of like a throwback to the 15 year winning streak for Iowa when cyclone fans had trouble even pretending that they thought they were going to win that game and I set all this up because Andy as you know that's the game Iowa State ends up winning with five goals I mean Shaggy kicks five field goals and Iowa State wins 15 13 it's kind of the example of you never really know even when you think you know I were you in Kansas City for that game yeah I was yeah I was a Kansas City I remember sitting there working at my desk on Saturday of of Sihawk game day and it was just totally quiet no one was talking about that game nobody mentioned that there was no social I mean I'm in a different place yeah I was just like one state to the south and it's like the game wasn't even going on.

And I remember you were setting the text messages kind of letting me know what was going on the game I was like wow so I was following on the internet was about the best I could do but yeah it's just really weird I don't know I mean that game is like a throw out the books game but week one is to I mean what week one sometimes as I mean you just don't know you don't know that much about your team in the first game of the season let alone the first game of the season against an opponent that is far beneath anybody you're going to see when you start conference play. Quicky Paul is from WCI pools and spas names in Irvendale let's bring in a co-host of instant Iowa co-host of the committee I don't know I'm probably what show am I missing here A.D. Buckets that'll be coming back. Buckets co-host of buckets I don't know I'm starting to think you're avoiding your family. But let's get this quicky Paul A.D.

Pick the most likely Iowa State wins by 40 plus Iowa State wins by 14 or less Iowa scores 50 points or Hank Brown out plays Jeremy Hecklinski. These are good questions these are think about each one of these right the possibility think about what that would look like I think I agree with this at this point I mean it's I was state should be seem oh by will you see my by 30 maybe be you say that every year on the first games for these teams that it frequently does not happen. And in fact, it usually doesn't happen. Talk to Russ. Talk to Russ and us. And we've got as many each other like six months ago. Yeah. And I don't, but here's the other thing though. Teams like Northern Illinois and Southeast Missouri State, I mean, they get robbed of all their good players in the off season now. You know, they're worse than they have been in the past. Yes.

Right? I mean, they, if you got, if you're a good player in one of those teams and you have a good season, you're gone, man. Nobody's like, I don't know, man, I really like Cape Toronto. I'm going to stay here at Seymour for another year. I know everybody. I know that Illinois wants me and Missouri is offering me, but man, there's some about the banks of the Mississippi River that are just too beautiful to pass up. There's nothing like being a Red Hawk. Yeah. I mean, Cape Toronto boy. Yeah. No, statistically AD, you look at the numbers probably more than Andy or I do or the gambling aspect of this. I think by mathematical probability, wouldn't it be Hank Brown outplaying Jeremy Hecklinsky? I mean, isn't that the statistically most likely of these? Because I mean, it going in, wouldn't you think it's 50-50? That's what the coaching staff keeps telling us. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. We actually had Alex Guchen, who's a fun follow on Twitter, tweet lettuce, and he kind of did the math for us. And was like, you know, according to, you know, probability.

Yeah. I was state winning by this much is this percentage. And yeah, clearly 50-50 was the highest percentage between Hank and Heck. Because yeah, like you said, everything we've been led to believe despite our own eyes, is that these two dudes are neck and neck. That being said, I agree with this. I think it's Iowa State wins by 14 or less. I think they win by more than that. But I can't, I could see this more likely than either I was scoring 50 with this offense or I was state winning by 40. And I'm just, I'm so, I'm putting his little mental and emotional energy as I can into the Iowa quarterback situation at this point. I don't care. I don't care who it is. I want one of them to look good tomorrow. I don't care which one it is. Just give me a quarterback. I could care. I, if you know if it's Jimmy Sullivan, give me a quarterback. It's got to be better than the Deacon Hill ever. Not to pick on Deacon. Not to pick on Deacon. Just name one. Just give me a name. Please. All right.

That's the starting buzz here on Mervin Andy. The bus brought you by Lose Year, Heating and Cooling. I'm cool. I am too. Inside. Won't be from all know. And we're at PCM for the 4 PM news. It will, it will, that'll be peak heat at that time. We've done RV TV. The game tonight is the defending state champions from Nevada and playing PCM state champions in 2018. Perfect season to good programs. Always, always a threat to get to the dome. That was a great RV TV stop as probably, were you there for Mervin? RV TV stops in both of those places. Yeah. Yeah, we have good, good stops too. Monroe was awesome. They really turned out, I said, they're gonna, they're gonna be fired up for the game. Do you have to stop in Monroe or in Prairie City?

I was not on that one. Yeah, we went through both. We went by, they had all the schools, they let all the school kids out to Greedis coming in through Prairie City and Monroe, but the RV TV was on the town square. And that's a really nice town square there. It was, we had a good time. We had fun. Thank you so much. Let's start with the worst team in college football, UMass, just punking Rutgers last night, 3721. So here's your cautionary tale. This probably will come out of, this will probably be a reminder from Jimmy Rogers, from Kirk Farens. We're not ready to play. You can have better players. And if you don't match the emotion in football, this can happen. 3721 and it wasn't a fluke. And UMass just dominated this game. Opened up on him, yeah, they went after the first touchdown. It was kind of all them. Rutgers was a 30 point favorite. And some people's like lock of the weekend.

I think Dave Portinoi was like his lock of the year that Rutgers would win by at least 30. That's how bad UMass' reputation is. And on top of everything else, Rutgers paid UMass $1.5 million for this win. That wasn't a win. It was a loss, 1.5 million. And it's UMass, probably most known. I don't know, still for Dr. J maybe. But first win over a current power four team, since 1978, a team that is still in the P4. That's how long it's been. I mean, I was in middle school the last time UMass beat a current power four team. And then salt and the moon Andy, the scheduled fireworks. Can you not call these off? This is it Rutgers. I mean, clearly, why wouldn't they think they're going to win? But the fireworks, well, I mean, just watch the fireworks, Murph, if you're not supposed to look down. No, these were celebratory fireworks. Can you not cancel a fireworks show? Can you not make a, yeah, we just got our ass kicked.

X-N-A on the fireworks. Faye. That had to be a tough call. I mean, because what if they're just like, look, man, I don't know that we're ever going to get a chance to light these fireworks off after watching this damn team. And we've got like they don't, we can't save in a next year. We don't know that we're going to get good weather. I don't know what, I mean, probably there's probably so much set up that goes into that. You just have to do it. You have to be like rain or shine, wind or embarrassing loss. We are, we're shooting them off. We're shooting them off. We bought these. We're going to shoot them off. I mean, Greg Sianno, he, I don't know what you do. I mean, you're going to, now your Rutgers, you're already a team that most Big Ten fans don't want in the Big Ten, don't think should be in the Big Ten. You've, you've just given ammunition to every Big Ten critic, especially those in the SEC and some in the Big 12, they just immediately say, yeah, you're winning national championships because you're top heavy.

The bottom of the Big Ten sucks. And then you go out, you lose to UMass. So you give them some ammunition. You probably have Joe Woodley questioning life decisions at this point. I mean, good God, this is a bad loss. I mean, it's Rutgers. I don't know that anybody's, you know, hook in their wagon to, to, to, to, to any year. Greg Sianno, what happened? What, yeah, he has, he had a gone for a while. He was the man, when he went, went to the Buck and Ears, the NFL jump ship, that didn't work. And they kind of, never since it just hasn't, he doesn't gotten it back. Went back to Rutgers. Colorado blocked a Georgia Tech field goal. Georgia Tech was favored in this game. It's games at Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech beat Colorado at Colorado last year. It wasn't a great game until the last quarter and the last half of the fourth quarter, but a great finish. And good for the Big 12 to go beat a, you know,

a pretty good ACC team or at least going in. The thought was Georgia Tech was pretty good. And the Big 12 needed that after TCU laid that egg. Yeah, and one of the few interesting football games of the weekend, the, the big 12 won. So that's probably good enough right there, better than other people, better than the other teams will be able to say after this weekend. I mean, we're just so, you're just, you're just so loaded with crap. You're there for your team and that's about it. And then you're looking ahead. Well, the big game this weekend is Clemson at LSU in Death Valley. Two Death Valley's both claim they have the real Death Valley. But that is only part of the reason that Lane Kiffin has gotten so much attention this week. Yeah, yes. Yeah, the people aren't really talking about the game. Baton Rouge judge, which that does matter in this, rule that NFL players can return to the two LSU,

two other rosters too. But so, but there's no last I saw there still have been no decision made. The rosters are due today. So if you put these players, you put the two players on the roster, say they're going to play against Clemson. Now, already the attorney for these players has said if LSU does not put them on the roster, they will sue or file some kind of injunction protest about that. So what they said about the Texas Tech quarterback too, though, that didn't work. Yeah, I think the fascinating part for me at this point, and I know Lane Kiffin doesn't care in loves to just take on a fight. But to me, this is one of those classic juices not worth the squeeze moments. I mean, LSU is loaded. LSU has one of the highest, most expensive rosters in all football. They don't need these two guys to go beat Clemson or to make the college football playoff.

I mean, these are not game changing quarterbacks. They're good players that were in NFL camps. But you put them on the roster and play them. I mean, you risk having vacated wins or the season somehow suspended or the college football playoff committee saying, we're not allowing LSU in because you didn't follow the SEC guidelines or there's another court order that over rules this court order. I wouldn't play these guys, but he seems like he wants to. Yeah, and if I'm LSU's blot brass, I'm just like, look, man, we don't need the target on our back to be any bigger right now. You've got the players that you need. Let's just pass on this for now. And, you know, yeah, somebody else is going to do it eventually. Somebody else is going to do it and others will follow then. But for now, LSU doesn't need any more negative attention on itself.

Lane Kiffin doesn't need any more negative attention. He needs to go out and earn his paycheck and be forgotten for a little while. Right. And there is some nuance here that has gotten lost in the conversation because these are players that didn't get the fifth year. They played four years and they're part of that 2022 class, but they were already entering the NFL and signing NFL training camp contracts or to try to make the NFL when there was a ruling that, well, now the 2022 class also gets five years. But since they had already signed a professional contract of some kind, they couldn't immediately go back in without help from the court. But it does get out and left out of the conversation that part of it. Now, I still don't think they should be allowed to go. I think you signed a pro contract you're done. You can't come back to college as ridiculous as just hearing myself say that, even needing to say that sounds ridiculous.

But they're in the national polls right now say that everybody agrees with you. Yeah, yeah, the thing that does, I mean, this is the LSU fan because hey, big surprise here, LSU fans feel like everybody's being unfair to them that any fans would do this or any school would do this. And there are other players who now get that fifth year from that class and these guys can't, but those other players didn't sign professional contracts. And they were arguing as their attorney did, well, they didn't know at the time or we wouldn't have signed a contract because among other things, and maybe this is the biggest thing, they know they can make a lot more money going to LSU than they can playing on some practice squad for the NFL. Yeah, they did quick math and it wasn't too difficult to figure out and they rather missing out on it. They're gonna make more money and they could still get on a practice one. They could be right back where they are next year after having played another year football, made some money and perhaps improved their draft prospects.

If you guessed PJ Fleck and Minnesota would steal Norway's Viking row and start using it for Go For Games, your spot on, I think this might have been the lock of the all season. It does look cool. It does. They do have the row the boat thing. But this is not, I mean, didn't you know they would do this? The first time I saw them doing that, I was like, oh gosh, PJ Fleck's gonna bring this to Minnesota next season. It was not a hard prediction to make. Yeah, because of what he said in the past about rowing the boat and then also because, I mean, there are just a lot of Norwegians in the Twin Cities, so that makes sense that would be the school to... Is that not? Yeah, absolutely. Even without PJ Fleck there, they might have done this anyway. And yeah, it's a very, very Norwegian state, Norwegian place. And that's just a good pull the crowd together

in a time. It's cool. AD, how much do you expect to see that in the Iowa game? Not much. That's coming out of that three game gauntlet, right? Yeah, Iowa has a buy between the Washington game and Minnesota. Yeah, don't expect that much. Okay. Iowa, Kirk Ference likes beating PJ Fleck. We'll put it that way. He does. He does. What was the canole comment? Yeah, because PJ Fleck called the time out and so then Kirk called all their time outs right before the end. He said, well, we figured we'd leave the time outs and take the pig. Yeah, right. Yeah, that was about as... Salty as Kirk Ference gets, especially with another coach. Team USA Women's Basketball World Cup blows out China today. West Des Moines, Caitlin Clark comes off the bench, scores 14 points, has 11 assists, and zero turnovers and wins player of the game.

And I am really starting to believe she might be better than the 11th best guard in the WNBA. And she's almost making me think, maybe she should start. I mean... Well, there's a lot of players to get into that line up there. God. It's crazy watching Brianna Stewart sit the bench at all in a game. Yeah, she did start, Brianna Stewart. Yeah, but I mean, they still have to come out for long periods of time and it's... They're loaded. It's sub-starting is symbolic. It's a little bit... Also, I think the most interesting, well, there are a couple of stats that are interesting, but the zero turnovers is interesting because you put Clark with the best players in the world and they seem to catch the passes. Often drop passes lead to turnovers, not always. She takes chances and sometimes those chances, the lanes fill, but that part of it was interesting.

And also, despite international, or maybe because of international rules, the game, there just wasn't all the hacking and physical play that we've come to see in the WNBA. But also today, the NBA, because the WNBA is a subsidiary of the NBA. So the WNBA's Commissioner reports directly to the NBA's Commissioner, Adam Silver. So Adam Silver made the announcement today that Kathy Engelbert will be retiring at the end of the year. So she is done at the end of 2026 and this was long overdue. Sure, she's got a good business mind, but she has not handled... No, her role well at all. No, no, and this is good, this needed to happen. I think everybody knew this was going to happen. She... There was a lot in front of her in her last couple of years

in that job there was. And maybe later on, people will look back and see more of the good things that she did, but right now you're just blinded by the mess that she could not seem to grab the reins on. I mean, it just didn't ever seem like she had a plan. She had control. She had anybody's respect. And I think there were certain things that I don't know that anybody could have seen coming. I don't know that anybody could have seen the reception to Caitlin Clark and Caitlin Clark supporters being going down the way it did. So I don't know that she could have planned for that, but once it did start happening, it just did not seem like she had any idea of what to do. And she kind of faded into the background. Completely into the background.

She did. Yeah, it's kind of the opposite of leadership. And in the press release, they tried to credit her for unprecedented popularity, ratings, expansion, television and media contracts, but nobody paying attention thinks that most of that is because of Kathy Engelberg's leadership. We know how it all got started. Happened on her watch. Yes, you know, incidentally good timing. Yeah, and I know there are other things that we were just too late to the game of the WNBA to have any idea what Kathy Engelberg was like before Caitlin Clark got there. I don't know what she was like. But at this point, I think, I do not think that this is going to be any sort of quick solution here. I mean, it's not an easy job because you're managing a culture war among other things. Well, yeah, you're managing, you know,

sides and opinions that are a long, long way away from each other. And a lot of different mitigating factors thrown in. And I think picking this next leader will potentially be a gigantic mess. And just trying to get people to agree on not only who this person is, but what this person needs to do, what this person needs to represent, what their priorities should be. It is going to be a really difficult process I think to find the next leader. It's going to need a real standout leader to navigate some of these waters. Higher low since our last show. Presented by Welp Charter Retirement Planning and Tax. Economy shaky and things very confusing out there. No doubt about it. The future of institutions like Social Security, just your retirement situation.

You may be unsure of that. They have a lot of answers there at Welp Charter Retirement Planning and Tax. And they're there to take a call. You can reach them on the internet first there at WelpCharterRetirement.com. Man, it was so stinkin' hot, but I feel kind of bad. The dogs just get stuck inside. They get really hot and we went outside. So yesterday I put Lewis in the back of the Jeep, we went over to Raccoon River Park. And I'll let him swim until he could not swim anymore. I took the chuck at this time so I could throw the ball way to hell out there. Good boy. So this is the equivalent of like tricking your kids into a race and having a race again, just wearing them trying to get them tired and cool. But you can't run to that pole in back in 30 seconds. You're so out there that is. I was throwing that thing as hard as I could. Yeah, your shoulder's gonna be so hard. Yeah, he, well I had, I was using the chuck at too. You can really wing that thing up.

Oh yeah, yeah, that thing is cool. But he would just go as far as he needed to go. He looked at things. That exhausted coming back. I know he rose in as this. I mean, probably 20. I mean, he was, Oh my god, man. And then he'd drop it right on the edge there side of weight into the water to get it all. Oh, he need some water there. Lewis, with the surrounded by a game of fetch. Yeah, he's not gonna drink that. I hope that. Oh yeah, yeah, he was drinking that stuff. He was like, are you kidding? That's a dog stomach man. I think he'd eat anything. But yeah, he just, we've over and over and over again. And then put him in the Jeep, drove home. By the time we were home, he was dry. I'll bet. Yeah, he had two things going for him. The wind and the heat. I'm going high here. The boss, Bobby T, he said that I could wear blue to the football Friday prime time game tonight instead of the embalming fog gray. I mean, Andy, I'm just, I'm too pale for embalming fog gray. And there were some people that were worried

that I was going to be in a casket by the end of the night, laid out. The best we could say is that it was a lighter color right out in the sun. It was hot. Yeah, it didn't warm us up. But yeah, I know, I'm going with red today. We have these new red shirts I've worn yet. So I'm gonna wear that. All right. And that, because it's great and look good on me. I didn't look, I don't know who, who looks good and gray. I know there are certain people that do, but they ain't us. I thought I did, but then when all the health checks, I knew I didn't. A Scott school, stupid, quickie poll, the weak and Iowa unnecessary censorship and a takedown of big red coming up on Murf and Andy here on Iowa everywhere. You will be told to follow certain rules for success. You will follow your instincts instead. You will envy the person who can log off for the day. And you will accept you are not that person. Let's start a thousand sentences with. This might sound crazy.

But what if you will do that crazy thing a thousand times? Because you love what you do. And love will make you do crazy things. The Staujah THC fruit salters and quirky flavors like orange dream sickle, caramel apple, and grape soda. Refreshing taste, cosmic vibes for your mind. Pick your groove. Oh, I know. Are you joking? Another messy entry. How this going to send Mark Freund over the edge? Kent is head on the diving board again. How does this happen? And isn't, AD, it isn't Scott, like, didn't Chris Williams

ask him to like help us upgrade our technology? And I think he's like our chief technology officer. And he can't get his own mic to work. Nope. What the hell? What is wrong with you? Also, he's never had this like Mark Freund said a couple of weeks ago on what's bugging you. He's never had to see Sean over thinking. Not one. Yep. Only happens here. All right, let's go to the stupid, quickie poll. Will Scott flounders. And listen, this isn't a bit. Is it? It can't be a problem. All right. Going on a little too long to be a bit. Yeah, I can't just so it's so embarrassing. Freud and hit the nail on the head. All right, here we go. How many regular season college football games do you prefer? 10, 12, 14, 16. And I wish we had to explain why he came up with this poll. Because it's a really random. I've never really never heard from Scott. More humor. Check it. Oh, there we go. I did absolutely nothing different. That's such a lie. You did something. You did something. You did something and you know you did something.

Why are you asking this question? Oh, because I feel like we have gotten a little complaining about college football. I know I have. And I feel like. I feel like. Yeah. One of the things that we've actually gotten right is what this poll is showing. 12 regular season games. It's great. That's what I thought when I saw the poll. I honestly, I think I thought 12 to it. I think 12 is perfect. Yeah. I do too. I do too. And the big 10 is talking about their situation where they would play 10 conference games. With the 2014 playoff, if that happens, they would go to 10 conference games that does worry. I.O.I. was a state rivalry talk potentially. But 10 conference games would be great. Stay at 12, play 10 conference games. Like the the NFL, I know they're thinking about going to 18. I think 17 might be one too many.

16 was better. It's deluded the season a little bit. 12 is good for college, I agree. I like the fact that it's, it gets out of the way of the NFL eventually. I do like that. I like having the both for a long time. I just, I just, I think 12, I think it should start a week earlier. But I think 12 is perfect, which probably means that there is no chance that they will leave it at 12. You're right. There's too much money to be made. Well, they do, they do have to get those playoffs started, which are the big money makers. So we'll see how that goes. Scott, do you want to do a reboot of Scott's goal? Sure do. Do you want, do you? Okay. Let's try again with all. Scott's goal, Scott's goal is cool. Yeah. Football season has returned tossing the old pig skin around, but it turns out, it's not a pig skin. I think people mostly know the modern football is a manufactured bladder wrapped in cowhide.

But even originally, it wasn't pig leather necessarily. It was a pig's bladder, but it was wrapped in other animal skin. So it should never have been called the big skin. And that's got school. Scott's goal, Scott's goal, Scott's goal is cool. Yeah. Andy Grady, A to F. It's not it with enthusiasm. It's not an F. I perked up when I heard him talking about a pig's bladder. Okay. Scott's goal is presented by Carbless premium handcrafted cocktails. Didn't ask this of A&D, but now that we have Scott, A&D, all of you here, do you think there's any chance that Iowa State is having fun with how much so many fans don't like the I state logo? And after not having that on the helmet all of last season, they're not really going to start the Jimmy Rogers era with the I state logo. They're going to come out and surprise everybody with cyclones any chance. There's a chance, but I bet Jimmy Rogers has no idea.

No. That guy is in such a bubble already and purposeful and not in like an hour bubble. And a bubble of, I don't want to talk to anybody. Please let me focus on that game of football. Haven't we, Andy, got, aren't we a little, I mean, we being just the reaction to the I state logo hasn't gotten a little over the top. I mean, it's not, well, you've added on what are you talking about? You're one of the most guilty parties out there. What are you talking, you're trying to go back on the ship? Not hypocrite. I'm not offended by it, though. I mean, it's not hideous. It's just, it's like the Sihock trophy now. It's just playing. Okay, it's not this state. Nobody's knowing saying you are offended by it. You don't have to go that. Yeah. You don't like it. You think it's dumb. I don't know how many times you just called it out, it's just dumb. Well, I do think that Jamie Pollard is doing this because he knows so many fans hate

this logo. It's just kind of like a final like, hey, I'm still in charge here. Just a little finger head into, yeah, into as as the school bus doors closed. He's making the call on the football helmets. I don't know. Absolutely. Yeah. I think he's talked about that a lot. I think he would have had it completely different had Matt Campbell not had such strong opinions about the black uniforms and the alternates. And he even told Emory Sanger, one of his big regrets is I was state should have had the I state logo in that fiestible because that was such a big platform for the university and they didn't use their main logo. Put that helmet back up there again. Yeah. Put that down. That actually that does not look that bad. It doesn't look that bad. Exactly. There are a lot of teams with worse. It's the side hawk. That's my point. Aren't we overreacting to this, including me. Yeah. Here's my problem with it. It's not distinctive. You have you have one of the most distinctive nicknames in the country, Cyclones.

It's not like Bulldogs or Tigers where so many teams have it. You have this distinctive name and you don't put it on the helmet until last year. I think that's, yeah, that's much better. That is better. That's distinctive. That tells you who this is. People remember it. People want to buy the gear with this script logo on it. That's the problem. And I state, as I've said many times, people outside the border, it does not resonate with people to the point that they say, is this Indiana state? Is this Idaho state? Is this Illinois state? What is it? Everybody says I, SU. So they've got to sign. To Jamie's point though, he is right in the sense that they, from a branding perspective, on the biggest stage, they should have worn there this logo. The issue is, is the decision to make this the logo over the course of what has it been 10, 15, 20 years at this point? At least. It's the main mark. If you could have put cyclones as the main mark over the last 20 years, it would have

so much more cashier and value, but we forced it for so long that it actually is the most identifiable mark for Iowa state because of a mistake made so long ago that was invested in year after year after year. And that repetition with branding is the most powerful thing. How about the graphic itself? Scott, you're in the graphic design. I, the graphic itself. If you pick I state, if you, okay, let's just say you say, we're going to be I state and this design for that thought. Then I think you have to go 100% into on official documents referring to yourself as I state. But what I'm saying is the logo design itself with this wording. What do you think of the actual logo that was designed? I'm saying, it's, you get the word, I need it to say I state, is it designed well for I state?

Yeah, yeah, okay. For that. For look at how much better those helmets on the bottom look. They're so good. It makes me more proud to be graduating from Iowa state. I love that cyclone. It makes me feel like, yeah, that's art. Yeah, but that's not a logo. They do need a logo. I'm a big logo guy. A logo that stands out without any words. The Tiger like logo, boom. Yeah, but like the bugle was intended to be, but it was everything about that night against Texas was a disaster. I know. I think they need to keep working on that. Like, you know, I don't really like that one. I think that one's a little too complicated. You're trying to do too many things. I mean, make a, make a tornado look in logo, even though I don't think a cyclone's actually it's not a tornado. It's not, yeah. The bugle was a mess. It just, it looked too cartoonish. Yeah. Right? But I think they could keep working on it. First of all, it needs to be bigger and have like a little more depth to it. Yeah. I don't know. No, see, that's too.

But it's the right idea. Yeah. I mean, you know what I mean, a logo. The upside down view. This does look like, I mean, it looks like something a road runner would trap Wiley Coyote. No, you think of the Tasmanian devil too. No, Tasmanian devil. Let us know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I mean, this is, they need a logo. They need a logo. And sometimes the logo is just a letter. Right? Just, just, just one letter and that, that works. You see that letter and you immediately, let me see the Michigan Am and you, you know that's Michigan. Um, but, right. You, but you, you have to like, get it and then settle on it. And to Scott's point, I mean, the reason that this I state logo has become, is, you know, known as, is, is it has is not because it's so a goal again, it's just because they've hammered it for years, put it on everything. And that's part of it. I mean, you have to do that. You have to kind of like go all in, commit to it and then, and not change, modify it, alter it at all.

And that's not the era that we're living in, which is why I say the hot, the hot guy's it. They lucked out in landing on something at a time and place where you never changed anything. And now we're in this place where you, everyone wants to customize, they, you know, it comes from Madden, it comes from being able to make whatever uniform you want, whenever you want to do it. And this right here is classic. Now is this dated? This is absolutely a dated graphic design. But well, they tried, they tried to freshen it once, remember, he had the, uh, the, uh, try to give it tiger, hock on crack. Yes. I wonder what, how about the walking side? I see, yeah, I see I like that better. I mean, that's, I love the walking side, but here, here is where it gets more complicated for Iowa State because they're originally the cardinals. And then there's the famous headline of the cyclone blowing through Kansas or whatever it is. So they start picking up the nickname cyclones, even though they were originally the cardinals. But I get asked all the time, why is the cyclone mascot a cardinal?

And you kind of explain the backstory. But yeah, the walking side is great, but it has, it doesn't have anything to do with the cyclone, even though his name is Si, it's hard. Well, Hawkeye's aren't Hawks. It's just their eyeballs. I just, I don't want to just walk inside this for basketball. I don't know. This one reminds me, this is just two nineties. This one, I don't like that one. I, I, there are people who love it. I know it'll come back around, but I like that, that the, the previous one, because Si looks pissed. He's going to go put his boot and someone's ass. Yeah. And the reason nothing is stuck is because of what. The mere merf is talking about. It's, there's just not really a lot you can go on to. And even the cyclone is not a tornado. That is a different meteorological event. It's like a wind, but you can't make a logo out of a wind. Well, I believe a cyclone is, is something that happens in the Pacific. It's almost like it's more of a hurricane. But that doesn't make any sense here, which is wind. Wind.

Yeah. Good luck with the wind. Speaking of hot air and wind, here is the Iowa nice guy on Nebraska football. Braske football win lost prediction. Keep in mind that the bug eaters are the only team to go under their wind total the last eight years. Week one, Ohio bobcats lost. Before you get to p****, bug eater fans, realize that Ohio's quarterback dominated at a college called El Camino. Week two, bowling green, loss. Bowling green will be locked in knowing they have no chance of winning the following game at Iowa State. North Dakota fighting hawks, loss. Seeing hawks puts Nebraska in the fetal position, assuming Iowa is about to beat their a**. Michigan State, loss. Maryland, trap game, loss. Then Indiana rolls into Memorial Stadium to f**king Beres, Nebraska, whose fans will cry, we should be like Indiana. No you shouldn't, loss.

At Oregon. Lost. Washington, at home. To be fair, and I always am, if this was at the start of the year or a volleyball game, I'd pick Nebraska. But being 0 and 7 lost. Road trip to Illinois and Rutgers. Lost. Lost. At home against Ohio State. Win. Oh s**t. No, sorry, that's volleyball. This is confusing. I keep forgetting Nebraska is not a football school anymore. They are a volleyball school, which there is nothing wrong with. Lost. And that brings us to Nebraska Super Bowl, playing at Kinnec Stadium against the hawk guys, who have won 10 out of the last 11 games. Make it 11 of 12. Lost. Don't worry Nebraska, you may go 0 and 12. But remember, you can always rest on the fact that your home sellout streak is a complete loss. Wow. You got one guy that was mad at you. I'm trying to find him right now.

Yeah, that's always what I want to know is, especially as beaten down as Nebraska fans are by disappointment. A little bit of momentum still having beaten a top 25 team in more than a decade. But they at least got to bowl games again. So what's the response been like? Are they still fighting? Oh, yeah. And the amount of rent free is, and then the constant talk of all these national titles that they have and Iowa doesn't have, they, it's so funny because they are making the joke for me. And when they say that stuff, I know I'm helicoptering around the perfect area to continue to drill into these jokes. There's the same jokes we've all been making. Over 20 years. And they're so, I'm laughing. I'm writing and I'm laughing at myself when I write trap game, Maryland, loss. It's just, it's so silly.

Here's what you can't do. It says, this is the dipshit trying to troll the Huskers. You can't call somebody else a dipshit and then misspell dipshit. It's one word, not two. Everyone knows that's one word. Yeah. Oh, yeah, that home winning streak thing. They're so sensitive about it. That's how you know what the sell out the sell out winning streak. Yeah, the help sell out sell out. Yeah, they, yeah. Confluence is the official beer of Murr, Fnandy. No confluence for Andy. No. Today, the use of Friday tradition. That is in the fridge for me tonight. Good old Des Moines IPA. They do have new releases every Friday and all sorts of fun stuff going on there. May have some of those in the RV with us next week. We'll see. Yeah. The confluence tap room is a fantastic place for a Friday afternoon, early evening for certain. If you don't have a high school football game to head out to, you can stay there the rest of the evening. Right off the pretzels.

Get the pretzels. Yeah, get those pretzels are good. All right, let's get some more here on a Murr, Fnandy Friday. But wait, there's more from either or eatery and patio. Reminder either or has great air conditioning. It really works well. Yeah. Old beer by all have to be on the patio. Yeah, options. No, really good air conditioning in there. Amazing sandwiches, smash burgers as well. Great place for Friday evening meal. Duck in there before the walkie north west at Valley game if you're in Westamoah or in Des Moines proper, right? It's right on the edge there. According to Gap. Yeah. Yeah, sounds cool. It doesn't matter. It was not going to be a reference that was actually needed. So sorry. I'm sorry. I said it's right near Scott's house. Say hi. Hey, it is. And he does find a time to call back the speak pipe. Or is it too late for me? We need something for next week. So, okay. All right. All right. Labor Day weekend, I can't keep forgetting that it's a holiday weekend because we're

working the holiday and it's the football weekend is kind of the holiday and I have it self. But according to gas buddy, this will be the most expensive Labor Day weekend for American drivers. Yeah. Well, nationally the price of gas is over $4 a gallon and the price of diesel is higher than it has ever been at any time ever. $5.85 a gallon for diesel. Driving a truck. Remember when diesel was like the thing back in like, yes, I do. 80s. It's been a while. Those cars were so slow and heavy and they just belch and out black smoke but they got better gas mileage. Fun event tomorrow. This is going on. I talked about this on Wednesday night. This is really cool. So George Fomaro, Tony Lemo, you guys both know them too. Ace restaurant tours and then Des Moines, Tony of Posto. George Fomaro, Chentro and Zombie Burger and South Union Bakery and a million other things.

And then the other guy in the picture here is Louis Tamea of Tamea and Suns. Old friends, they are at an outdoor brick bread oven. Bread oven which is located just to the south of the Old Italian Cultural Center on Indian Olor Road. They are this bread oven. There used to be these outdoor bread ovens all over the south side of Des Moines in the Italian neighborhoods as the women would get. First of all, it was so damn hot in your house that you would want to break a bunch of bread inside so that you would have these outdoor summer kitchens, summer ovens. And they would bake this incredibly wonderful Italian bread and then they would hand it out to neighbors, use it themselves. And then most importantly, they would sell it and then use the pennies that they would get to help build St. Anthony's Church there on the south side of town and to other worthy causes. And a woman who is known as the matriarch of Des Moines Italian community is a woman named

Pat Sivitott and she's here in the middle between Tony and George. She is now 96 years old and she had that bread oven built outside the cultural center about 17 years ago. And while it looks really cool and it's certainly very, very similar to the ones that she used to use, that her mother used to use, it had never actually baked bread. So George and Tony, always thinking of fun stuff to do, thought wouldn't it be great if to honor Pat and all she's done for the community, we would actually get together, fix up this old oven, fire it up, bake bread, invite her to this big picnic and hand out the bread to people. And she would get to see her oven working. And now ironically they picked a day, they're doing it on Saturday, a day where you can probably bake bread without an oven. It's an oven in an oven at this point.

But it's really cool, this whole story that is there, the old Italian culture, the new Italian cultural center is almost finished. It's over on Fleur Drive, that giant mansion that's being renovated, it's going to be amazing. But the old one is still down there on Indian Ola Drive, or Indian Ola Road, and it's got the big mural on the side, but that is now an antique store called Raccoon Forks Trading Company. It uses that building, but that building itself, the cultural center, used to be a bakery. It was a supreme baking company back in the day and it was actually two stories. The picture here on the top is before this enormous fire that they had where they lost the entire second floor. But then they just kind of cleared that out and then continued to use it, it was down on the first floor there. So that building is still there. That was this great big bakery where all the Italians on the south side, they work there, supplying all the Des Moines with this great bread. And the building is still standing, but now it's a Raccoon Forks Trading Company and the

bread oven is outside and on Saturday from 2 to 4, what they'll call the picnic for the pat, they will be baking bread at that location once again and handing it out. Everybody who comes by, they're going to do at least 300 loves. Bring your own order. And it's just open to the public. It's open to the public. Yeah, okay. Now the timing is unfortunate and they know that 2 to 4 p.m. and certain football time, but they'll have games on and stuff like that, but you'll be able to go out there and do that, at least just kind of see that. And then hopefully it works out and they think they might be able to keep that oven going for other events. That's so cool. And one of the things I love those old photos in Des Moines was also a reminder, anytime and scout, you probably know this better than any of us, you just reminded how many fires there used to be. Like things were on fire all the time. Like how many times did the downtown Yonkers catch on fire? How many times does the surf ballroom and clear lake been on fire? I mean, there used to just be fires all the time.

Yeah, stuff made out of wood everywhere. And hot, just heating with coal and heating with flames and just too many factors. Yeah, too many meltdowns. I mean, actual full cities, which is Chicago. Chicago, yeah. Yeah, burned. Yeah, nice Chicago. So, all right, moving on, p is melting a glacier at the base of Mount Everest. At base camp. Yeah, there are all the climbers there. P in the same spot on the Kumbu glacier and 150 metric tons of water have been melted from it. The base camp, oh, climbers just go over there. I mean, I've seen pictures, I've heard the stories, but I guess you just kind of have to see it up close. I mean, Mount Everest is such a popular place. People have just trashed it. There's garbage all over. You know, because they have to pack it out with like helicopter and stuff, it's expensive to get it out of there. It doesn't decompose. It's too cold.

The bodies don't. The bodies don't. Yeah, bodies will just stay there. Yeah, yeah, it's crazy, but they're peeing out a glacier. They're melting a glacier. A glacier, there's so much big. That's great. That reminds me, it wasn't pee. But do you remember as we go into RV TV when Williams nearly melted Humboldt? I was in there. It wasn't pee. Oh, yeah. It was not pee. He was accidently taking. And he didn't even go to the accident and he thought it was a diariol, right? No, he was taking five vehicles. He was reversed. And what he didn't realize was like the top of the stall didn't go all the way to the ceiling. And the chamber of commerce was having a party with their significant contributors and stuff. So they're all in there. They've got the snacks out, the dips, everybody's eating. And he thinks he's three rooms. He thinks he's three rooms away, but there's no top to the wall. So it's just like one big room.

And these people are like, well, you know, we're so glad to have RV TV here. And it's such a good, he's over in the background. He goes Jeff Daniels and dumb. He's dumb right now. And no one wants, it's a combination of businessmen and business women. And then they're in there. They don't know each other well enough to acknowledge the elephant in the real murder site. They thought it was an elephant. So he, right. Also some elephant dung. Mental floss is out with its rankings of the best state fairs in America. Minnesota is number one. I think we're accustomed. I've been marching behind Minnesota. That's nonsense. It's not too, it's too. But in Texas is three. Yeah, I would. No, not on this list. Iowa is two. Minnesota is one. I was two.

Florida is three. No way. No way. No way. It is no way. It's like during, I think it's during the school year. There's no way the Florida state fair is even in the top 10. I'm not making it up. North Carolina after that, Washington, but then we get back to the Midwest, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Kansas. Wait, these are all, what about Texas? Where's Texas? Not on the list. It's not in the top 50. Well, it's not on the top. I'm not going to read 50. You don't care that much. 50. Got the cotton bowl. It's fine. You want a list that has 50 entries in it. NateNiche.com has released its list of the top party schools in America based on student reviews, nightlife statistics. Top party colleges have a vibrant and diverse party scene. They offer fun options both on and off campus and students rate their peers as being fun, friendly and into party. This doesn't sound like a party that I was going to.

I was going to a gym party. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. There. I mean, if they say diverse party scene, they just mean safe rides and parties. Safe ones. I don't get why mocktails cost the same as a cocktail. That's what they do. Like that. Don't have the alcohol in this. And these are big sellers now. That's a great off-the-ray. It's a orange juice. Flash a cranberry and it's $14. Florida State is number one. That's probably true though, isn't it? Florida State would be the number one party school. You can understand that. Tulane is second, which is a very exclusive private school, but it's in New Orleans. Then there. It's awesome. Okay. Wisconsin is number three. Many less have Wisconsin in the top three. Dayton is number four. University of Dayton. Did they visit during the first four? What? Dayton. USC Penn State, Ohio State, Georgia, West Virginia, best, best methane.

Hands down. Illinois is number 10. The first big 12 school that is mentioned is Texas at number 12. And then Iowa in at 29. I'm staying on Texas. That's not a big 12 school. Hey, West Virginia is that. Well, did I say CCC? The former even connection, even remote connection to the big 12 is Texas. There are no confusing. It's confusing. Nothing until you would get all the way down to Texas Tech, which is like a 48 or something. No, West Virginia. West Virginia. Oh, shit. Yeah, that's right. It's they're going to kill me on two guys. And don't worry. They're alive. They're not in the flag anymore. They're in the fentanyl. You want good meth to go to Albuquerque. At least we'll know when Hassel watches this show. Yeah, thank God. No, he will hang on. Hang on, Andy. Where was Arizona State? In the top 50. Who's going to mention that?

I was state 9 on the top 50. Arizona State wasn't in the top 50. Nope. Arizona State. Right. Like, I've seen the, I've seen Arizona State like number one. Yeah, definition of a party school. Well, this makes me feel better. Like you got a little more money's worth. A little more of your money's worth. Yes. Okay. There has been another Halloween costume faux pas at Walmart target in Amazon. Oh, boy. There are already off to a bad start. But this time the retailers were selling the German Army soldier adult costume. Jesus. By Orion costumes. No. No. No. No. It's not. People slam the stores online. It closely resembles the uniforms worn by Nazis in World War II, which I mean, I just, I don't know. Oh, anybody could be like, no, it's just a regular German Army costume. Is this for more, more, what?

It's not for yet's World War one. That guy also not this model does not belong to the area in race. It does look like the shirt I wore last week. Yeah, his hair is too dark, but it is the color shirt last week. This day in 1991, the Major League Baseball Statistical Accuracy Committee votes to drop the asterisk next to Roger Maris's 1961 home run record of 61 passing Babe Ruth 60 and determines also an official no hitter must go at least nine innings. The asterisk is the big one there. Gosh, it took 30 years. Kind of haunted him too. He did. And I mean, technically he did play 162 games and Babe Ruth played 154. Right. He needed more games. I mean, it's true. But you don't have an asterisk like my Babe Ruth thing that says only faced white pitching.

Yes. It's true. It's true. Yeah, I mean, but just going on, I mean, we don't do that. It is, I mean, it is significant. I mean, OJ Simpson, 2003 yards and 14 games. I mean, that's, yeah, you have to be enough of a historian. Player knows that so much better. Yeah, players are so much better. Yeah, but Jim Brown had 1000 yard seasons and 12 games. Yeah, but yeah, but what would it do that in today's NFL? How do you know, but Jim Brown was playing at that time too. This is what I'm saying nutrition or the. No, right. Ice could grab him by his face mask and pull him down. I mean, they were all playing in the same era. It's not like it was Jim Brown of today playing in the 60s. Yes, but you just can't. It's not apples to apples. There are these changes. This is different. The rule would be going by numbers. Yeah, amount of teams that there are change.

You're just going by numbers. With the yards for them. All sports with the changing schedules and usually they get longer to make more money. You would have asterisk all over every record. You couldn't look at the NFL especially. It's just yeah, they're going to they'll change again at some point. It just really seemed like they did that with Babe Ruth because it was. They didn't think Maris was worthy. Yeah, I mean, it was it was Babe Ruth's record. It was like the most hallowed record. They wanted mantle to break it. They thought mantle and that movie 61 tells that story very well of the Maris Mantle because they were both chasing 61 and mantle didn't keep up had some injuries and then Maris did it and they just didn't think he was worthy. He's not a Hall of Famer, is he? No, no. One World Series winner. I mean, he was a really great player played with the Cardinals later in his career with those great teams in the late 60s, but yeah, not a Hall of Famer.

Finally, I'm going to finish with this. I wanted to throw this out there as a singular Friday exit poll question to you guys. I saw this on Instagram the other day. Here's the question. If you went to school in the 80s, Murphy did what, at least a couple of years of school in the 80s and I was in school in the 80s. Andrew, you guys are at least school learning school in the 80s. Yeah, yeah, yeah. kindergarten. If you went to the score, you can say early 90s, whatever. Or 70s is all applies. What is one thing about those classrooms that you once sat in that kids would never believe today? I assume they still have these deaths. I mean, these deaths, do they ever change? They didn't have these deaths when I was in school. They actually had a separate chair and desk that had a lid on it and it was like a container. Oh, yeah. Our kids still had some of these deaths. A lot of them now are like tables. We did have one piece of desk too, like in high school and even in college, we had one

piece of desk too. A lot of them. So something now that kids... Kids with no idea. I'll go. Okay, me, born and raised in St. Louis, Hodden Hell, absolutely zero air conditioning in any room at any point of my education. And did they take a bunch of days off? No. I mean, there were... I do remember a few days like in high school where they would let out early, but it was over a hundred degrees. I mean, it was really, really hot. You had windows that opened, you had these gigantic metal fans that would absolutely cut off your whole arm. Oh, yeah. And you could get your finger in there. I mean, it was not... Yeah, it was tough. It was not safe. Yeah, there was a common sense that was required. The opposite in the winter when you'd have that singular boiler that would just make those radiators hotter than that bread oven will be tomorrow. Oh, you could get a third degree burn.

Yeah. Sit down. Sit down. Here we go. Huge importance of chalk boards and a racing chalk from chalk boards. Yes. And cleaning out the erasers by banging them together. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I mean, I can remember being in high school and having like a history class where there were three walls of chalk boards. And the guy had it, all of them covered. You know how much manual labor it is to just write and cover those things. And then you would have to erase it and like do it all again. They're just chalking. These kids like now, they're like, oh, chalk, the stuff that we dry on the driveway with. Like no, that was like... I mean, it was really just a somewhat sophisticated cave painting. Yeah. And Gus points out the pull down map that everybody had. Oh, yeah. Lots of... Yeah, pull down map. Maybe you'd have a, a globe or two in there. And then the overhead projector with that...

Yes. Plastic, because a cellophane thing in front of it. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's right. The TV on the cart that they would have to wheel in. And there was like a gun per building. She had to share it. How about the ability for teachers to actually interact with you? Disappoint. Disappoint. Yeah, physical, corporal punishment and some kind of... Yeah, some of those racers that would just get flung around, flung from the front of the room by the teacher. Somebody just spoke you. Oh. The thing I Katie points out, the hand crank pencil shartners, they still... They're all in rooms now to kids use pencils. Those were the water coolers of yesterday. Yeah, they still use pencils. All the pencils come pre-sharpened now when you buy them at the store. They would come pre-sharpened, but they don't stay sharpened, so you gotta have a pencil sharpener somewhere, right? Yeah, they all like... Yeah, they all like... Those cranks... Those damn kids. Which was crazy, like in all my years, it had like nine settings on the pencil sharpener.

You only ever used one for the number two. That's true. Why'd they have all those other ones? What were those for? Yeah. My kids today probably will never believe this, but there were zero computers anywhere, anywhere, except when I was in high school in the newspaper office, we had Apple Macintosh computers. Was that... Because yeah, if you want to look something up, like even in the movie field of dreams, when he wants to... Book. Look up, Terence Mann, he has to go get the micro-feesh. Yeah, yeah, the micro-feesh. You were typing class, because you didn't learn so early, so it was like learning a second language, having to go in there and try and not... You weren't allowed to look at your fingers, they would cover your finger, you had to get so many words per minute. That was torture. No computers anywhere. No computers, books, and that's hard to get. Maybe somebody had a calculator watch. That's right.

That was it. Britannica, the cyclopedia, and Britannica. And finally, you could tell this the moment you walked into like an elementary school classroom, handwriting hugely important. Because they had that whole band that went around the upper part of the blackboard that showed you how to write in cursive, like that damn cue, like anybody ever wrote a cue that way. But... And your handwriting was so important, I will say, I can't believe how bad handwriting is gotten. I can't believe how bad my handwriting is gotten. Mine has to, I rarely write, like so. When I'm doing notes for the football game tonight, I'm like, God, I can't even read my own writing. It's like I'm learning to do it again. Our kids handwriting is bad. And like even the girls, remember the girls always had like these really nice, really nice handwriting. But I've gotten some... Signature. I've gotten some thank you cards from friends whose kids just graduated, had graduation parties, they gave me gifts.

What the hell is this saying? Really nice thank you card from all these guys, really nice, I appreciated it, but holy shit. Man. It's like they wrote it with their foot. I mean, you're like, I can't even read this. It's like, you can find someone who was like legitimately illiterate, you know, from, you know, the deepest, darkest reaches of Appalachia. And they could write better than that. You would be like, well, well, clearly this person is illiterate like, no, this is a national merit scholarship finalist. They just don't ever do any handwriting anymore. They type it all. Man. Handwriting. Are there any schools left that we had uniforms? And girls had to wear skirts. Does that still happen anywhere? That girls are private schools? They can't wear pants. Yeah, private schools do that, right? Still? Don't like the Catholic schools do that? Well, that's right.

I would say we were Catholic school and then when I was in first or second grade, they allowed us to start wearing shorts and the girls could start wearing shorts and pants. But that was a different time. Kids I went, I always said we're like khakis and stuff and like the same polo all the time. That's your more everybody. Nicely done Andy. By the way, so for the first time at Kidding Stadium this year, they're having a beer garden. Did you know this? Yeah. Yeah, so they had with bloody marries. We're going to check it out tomorrow. We'll check it out tomorrow, report back on how it is. So they're doing that, but one of the things and you know the burrito. You know the burrito left. Yeah, yeah, burrito left. That's really popular there. Some people get annoyed by it. But they're starting the mullets cam once a game and tying into this mullets beer garden. They're going to look through the crowd and put people on camera who have a mullet

and the audience will cheer and decide who's going to start a quarter back. The best mullet. Yeah, just what do they go to head Linsky? I think I'm busy the mullet cam is going to be during the Nebraska game. Oh, yeah. And that's just the women. Yeah, oh man, those on ironic. And just those are people that kept them from the 90s. Time to find out what's bugging you. Hey guys, Richard and Zach city here. What's been bugging me after returning from a trip overseas is the fact that in America, all of our bathroom stalls have those damn cracks in them so that when you're sitting in there, just dropping a load. The kicks open the damn bathroom door and then just stares you deeply into your soul through that little crack. We got to get with the times of America. Can we please for the love of God get some closed bathroom stalls? Hey guys, this is Chris and Kansas City and I felt the need to draw attention to Chris

Williams using the word algo over and over again the other day while he and Hassel were doing their season predictions on two guys. I was on my way into work and every time he said it, I wanted to punch my radio. Chris, algo's not a word man, okay? Were you just being lazy or were you legitimately trying to make it a word like legit? I hate to break it to you buddy, but it's not going to catch on no matter how many times you say it. Besides, is it really that much more effort to say algorithm? I mean, no, not really. Examination? Yeah, okay, that's a bit of a mouthful. Refrigerator? Yeah, that's a lot. Hipopotamus? Now, there's a preposterous word. I'm also really surprised. Hassel didn't say anything, didn't call him out because he's always scrutinizing the words that Williams uses or how he pronounces them. Yet, there he was, complicit during the entire podcast while his co-hosts committed a crime against the English language while also assaulting my ears. Damn strong feelings there.

Great? Photos too. Don't try to make fetch happen. That's great. Nice job. Speakpipe.com slash Merv underscore Andy is where you can leave. What's bugging you? Anytime, day or night on any subject. Now it's throw downs. Throw, throw, throw downs. It's throw downs backed by Hartlin Tyronotto. Hartlin Tyronotto authorized dealer of both Firestone and Bridgestone Tyres. Merv, what's more likely? I would mix the college football playoff or I would state mix a bowl game. Woo. Uh. And am I an asshole for asking this question? Because I hesitated. I think it's good. But I think it's, I think it's a good question. No, it's a good question. It's a good poll question. Why would you be an asshole just for asking? Well, because it's kind of an asshole question. Well, because they're so, they're so far apart with that. Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah. Yeah. I think it's a Hawkeye I could see. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's more likely Iowa State makes a bowl game because they got to get to six wins.

They may even make a bowl game with five wins, but let's, let's push that out. They should, they should have two automatic wins. They've got some home games that if the quarterback is, is good. And if this team has a little overachieve in it, we just don't know how good Iowa State's going to be. All that happens, they could get to six wins. I also think Iowa could make the college football playoff, but they got to win 10 games. Yeah. They have to win 10 games, have to make sure none of the two losses is an unexpected bad loss. 10, 10 wins. You got a, woo, that three game got let there. You're going to have to get at least one, maybe two in that three weeks and then not stumble against anybody else. It's tough with when you go into the season, not knowing who your quarterback is, it is not having a great quarterback that has kept Iowa from being in the playoff. Yeah, to get to 10 wins, it takes, it takes just like the last two thirds of the season,

you just have to roll, right? I mean, you got a long winning streak there that you got to put together and who knows? It's putting a lot of possible. It's possible. I think it's more possible that Iowa State wins, wins six games, you get two games against the non-conference patsies and pick up some others along the way. I think that's a stretch too, but that's why you asked that question. It's very close. They're both unlikely to happen, but I'm going on the technicality that if they get the five wins, there will be enough teams ahead of them that won't go to a bowl game. Iowa State can go to a bowl game and would at five wins. Andy, where is the best place to watch a college football game? And I mean anywhere, from the sideline to the press box, to your own couch, to a watch party, to a bar, to an airplane. Where's the best place to watch a college football game? It's on your own couch in your house with your food and your friends.

I hate to say that because it's so against the spirit of everything that we stand on. But if you're going to watch a game and you really want to watch the game, and you really want to be comfortable, and it's affordable and all the things, you just cannot beat your couch anymore. I mean, go into the games. Great. Love it. Hate sitting through all the rest of the crap that you have to sit through. If the weather is a factor, that sucks. There are days where everything goes right, and it's an absolutely amazing experience. But I mean, your couch is your couch, right? Things don't change. It's the same. That TV is going to work. I agree. All of that. I think the most overrated place to watch a game is the sideline. It's cool. And there are some good things to it. You recognize how much faster the game is than it looks from the stands or from your television, the hitting. It's more visceral, all that.

But you lose perspective on where people are on the field and the ball. It's a bad vantage point. The best place to follow along and understand what's going on in the game is at home. So, these all have their positives. They're all different experiences. But to watch the game, home. If you're letting me pick any scenario. I'm picking in the booth as I'm calling plays as the offensive coordinator for my team. That's where I want to be. I would be so locked in and I get to affect the game. Meanwhile, I don't have to take any of the risk of CTE. All right. What the hell was that? Fans are getting CTE. No, but I'm the coach and I'm watching down there. I don't have any of the people. Well, the coach on the field isn't getting CTE either. It's probably already got that angle isn't as good as the one in the field. The booth, see? It's all about the game. Now, eight Rock 2 says luxury suite. I disagree. I agree. Just because it's so difficult sometimes to get most of the people in the luxury suite to

pay attention to the game. Like, they're just too distracted by conversations and the booze and food and all of that. I mean, I'm a hypocrite. I'll pick a luxury suite of its minus 10 if I have the opportunity. But it's not a great place to watch a game. All right, Scott. Would you rather only be able to whisper or only be able to shout? Hmm. Some days I feel like I only shout, but I hope you pick whisper. I'm going to pick whisper because I think what's really good about whispering is that if you do it well enough, people will lean in and they'll pay more attention to what you're trying to say. The whisper. Would you pick one for the rest of our lives? Yeah. You know, interestingly, whispering is actually more damaging to your vocal cords than shouting. So all these two options, you're going to destroy your voice more whispering than you

are shouting. But I would still pick whisper shouting all day. Anything you have to say sounds exhausting. It also sounds like one of my coaches. Yeah, but do you know anybody who's lost his voice? Because he whispered too much. I mean, he's like, no. Nobody's ever liked his phone. No, Bill Fenley. That's mine. Sorry about that. Bill Fenley must've been whispering a lot again. I mean, if you whisper, you can use a microphone. It would still sound weird whispering into a microphone. But you could amplify your voice. If you're just shouting all the time, nobody's wants you around. Alright, that's throwdowns. Thank you, AD. Nice job. A lot of work. And we appreciate it. Quicky poll results from WCI polls and oh, I skipped ahead. Sorry, but let's go to Quicky poll results first. We'll circle back and get the much awaited AD square. Pick the most likely Iowa State wins by 40. Iowa State wins by 15 or less. Iowa scores

50, Hank outplays, heck. 43% say the most likely is the cyclones win by 14 or less followed by Hank outplaying, heck, 23%. Iowa State winning by 40 or more. And then the least likely apparent is Iowa scoring 50. What do you think Scott? You had to pick one of those. I think that's the most likely yes. Okay. How many regular? Yeah, I'm sorry, Andy. Math matically it's it's it's it's Hank outplaying, heck. I mean, that has the bad. Well, according to the coaches, they're dead even so doesn't that make it 50, 50? It depends on your interpretation. If you're riskier than first and you want to see what a machine. I saw one. We saw family practice day. Yeah, we saw kids day. Yeah, kids that they know. Yeah. How many regular season college football games do you prefer? I prefer 12. 81% agree with

me. Cheese. Second place is 14 with the whopping 8%. Cheese. Yeah, stay at 12 college for life. We got something right. Yeah. We know what's up. All right. Now without further ado, the Andrew Downs audio drop of the day, also known as the AD squared. Yeah, power by game day men's health. You can find them in an anacony Westmo in North Liberty, wherever you are. There is a game day near you. Go check them out. It is Friday. So some parental advisory is necessary. None of these bleeps are necessary. It's all innocent conversation. All had on one episode of happy hour. On a place bleeps and blurs to make it here and see things that weren't actually there. Is this weekend? I will unnecessary censorship. Do you want to talk about your shirt that you debuted? Show the whole thing. Okay. I have to stand up. I think. Yeah. My parents in the car is hilarious. It's 100% true. These were different times. Most everybody. And when I was a kid, my parents in the car windows

up. My mom and dad, they both went cold turkey when my sister got pregnant. My older sister Barbara, she got pregnant. They were like, we're quitting and they never **** together. That's why I'm with me. That takes some discipline. Oh, they also had wildly different reactions to it. My mom moved on. My dad said every day, the rest of his life, he craved the ****, but he never had one. How about that? My parents **** in the car. AD. Smoked. Smoked. That was good. That was fun. Wrong. But it was good. Oh, my goodness. Sorry. Jim the liquor king is checking out our weekend radar. What a guy. Malibu, coconut rum will

probably be at a number of tailgating parties tomorrow. Mix as well with so many things. Malibu and Orange juice to wake up in the morning. It's got like a bloody mirror for people like sweet stuff to wake up in the morning. Not necessarily. You're recommended for everyone. What's on your radar, Andy? Well, I'm going to go to the game tomorrow. I'm not going into the stadium. I'm going to stay the Iowa State game. I'm going to stay in the tailgating lot in the RV lot. Wow. But we're going. Our friends have an RV. We're bringing the kids. Everybody's bringing much friends. Um, bunch of. They're tickets. They're tickets. I don't want to go to the game. See now that was a big thing. We got to that. You were wondering before that was a big thing. Jimmy Rogers there. That wasn't always there. No, I got, we got a big TV. We got the shade. We're going to hang out there. We got a bathroom. It's

great. No, it's perfect. I love that. I honestly, this is exactly how I want to do this first game. But the problem is is you good. You get the delay because you're going to hear the stadium. There's a little TV's behind you. Yeah, the booze will come before the play. Now that was a dick. Another. Another side of the week. I'm just ramping up. Well, we, uh, we had the opportunity, fortunately to go to Iowa City or Ames and we were weighing it and we decided to stay home. We did. Just it's, it's going to be so damn hot. It, going to a game. It's great. But it is, it is not a relaxing day. And RV TV is a long week. Yes. So I just decided, you know what? Uh, and Jenny agreed. We're just going to, we're going to stay home, watch the games back to back. Maybe go to a, maybe go to a, you know,

up to buzzer billies or something, but we'll, we'll be in air conditioning. We got football and musical theater. We're going to wicked, baby. Oh, yeah. Excited to see wicked has been about 20 years since I've seen it on the stage excited and also on my weekend radar, self promotion, waiting for Fiddly Theater to put live tickets again as Kinnick the documentary will make its return to the theaters for a limited time at Fiddly theaters. I've always hated the audio mix. We just didn't have the time and the resources to make it the way I wanted to and try like studios reached out. They have a wonderful audio engineer. His name is Philip Young and he and try legs have now turned Kinnick the documentary into seven point one surround sound. Oh, no, no, at miss surround sound. You, I've, I've heard it now starting when it'll be in the middle of September here and I'll share the link as soon as it's up and it's so it's fine. It's a I'm so proud of that film and the audio

now it's great. You get the plane. No, I don't like to come in here. I'm in the World War Two and the Iron Men section. If you're a Hawkeye fan, if you've seen the film, this brings it to life in a way it hasn't before. And if you've never seen the film, this is going to be, it's going to be awesome. It's one of the rarest and serious compliments we give Scott. The film is terrific. It's, it's, it's a great film. Great documentary. I don't know if the rest of us will notice this huge audio difference the way you do. Yes. But you think we will. Okay. No doubt. No, no, no, I think this, the, the overall all the film will, it's the small details now. It's, it's going to feel more present. It's going to be noticeable in unnoticeable ways. I think if you go and see it. AD, what's on your radar? Yeah, we are going to the, the Iowa game. My, my younger brother and his family are coming over from Colorado. They probably just arrived. They have kids about the same age as my kids. And the eight of us are heading over to Iowa City and,

and going to go check out the game. So excited about it. You're going to wear the gold. Are you going to, are you going to, we, we got to, we got, we got, we bought them, the key was we bought the four of them matching shirts. Ah, matching shirts. And, and so they're, they're exciting about that. And, but yeah, so I won't be on instant Iowa, unless we leave it like half time and I get home in time, but I don't plan on that. Uh, Chris has is going to fly solo, although there may be a quick appearance from Donnie Hassel. So, uh, tune into instant Iowa after the game. Who knows when Chris will go live? I mean, hopefully the game is, is in hand for the Hawkeyes, you know, early fourth quarter or even before that. And so Chris may go live early on. Uh, it's one of the reasons you want to subscribe to Iowa everywhere. You'll get a notification, uh, when Chris goes live on, on instant Iowa. And then yeah, instant Iowa State tomorrow after the cycling game. So we're going to have this covered from, uh, from all angles. It's, it's football time, baby. There's also a little bell that you can click on a YouTube that will get you notified immediately as soon as a show goes live. Yeah. I, I really enjoyed instant Iowa last

year. So I'm glad we're adding instant Iowa State. So I love the emotion of don't think about it too much. Don't analyze it too much. Here's what I'm thinking right now. And sometimes the game's not even over yet. Andy and I are headed to Monroe for Prairie City, Monroe against Nevada. That is the WHO 13 prime time game tonight. Also Northwestern Valley is on the app, but only on the app. The main channel will be Nevada, PCM. They're both Owen one. So a sense of urgency for these two. Something's got to give. Someone's got to win. Someone's got to lose. That's coming up tonight. We'll, we'll start being live at four PM tonight from Andy flying in to chapter 13. Yeah. You don't fly in in flying in my Subaru forrestor from Ramsey, you should, you should, you should hold on to the drone that you guys have now. Oh, yeah. That'd be so cool. Yeah. The drone will be there. The drone will be there. You

will see those shots, but I'm driving so I can make a stop over at Goldies in Prairie City. I need a French line. All right. I need to go to shake or something. I need to go and tell explain to Jenny why she's getting messages about the 80 squared today. So thanks for making Merfin Andy part of your Friday. Really enjoyed the show today. Thank you, Andy. Thank you, Scott. Thank you, AD and especially thank you to you for watching or listening. We really appreciate it. We're back Monday. There's the, there's the button yet. We will be live for all VT. Do you guys know the route? It's I don't just get in the car Monday. Conrad Monday. My low Tuesday. Monosumma Monday. Albia Thursday. Adele, home of Nile Kinneck. Friday, Iowa City Saturday. The game is on 13.
