You're listening to The My Morning Devotional Podcast, episode 1500, today's
0:05
Divo is called The Cross.
0:08
Hey there, we're the Alessis, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida.
0:14
And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time.
0:21
That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five-minute daily dose of heaven.
0:27
This is The My Morning Devotional Podcast.
0:30
Well, Happy Friday, everybody.
0:32
It feels a little disingenuine to say Happy Friday because it is good Friday.
0:39
And we are coming to the end of Holy Week when really this is just the beginning of our celebrations, which is Friday.
0:46
The day that it all happens.
0:49
We've been going through the week of Holy Week.
0:52
We've been talking about what Jesus would have been doing leading up to The Cross.
0:57
But now we want to talk about The Cross.
1:00
What might have seemed like the end was just the beginning for our faith and for Jesus.
1:07
And, you know, even for our show, what might feel like the end or feel like a completion or an accomplishment
1:14
really is just the beginning for us.
1:16
Yes, we've hit 1500 episodes, but we have a lot more in store for all of us.
1:21
Because every day we are opening God's word and receiving something new.
1:26
It's the daily bread that we need.
1:28
And today's daily bread is found in John 19 verse 28.
1:33
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, he said, I thirst.
1:38
A jar full of sour wine stood there.
1:40
So they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hisip branch and held it to its mouth.
1:46
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, it is finished.
1:50
And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
1:54
So what happened on this day?
1:57
What was going on in the city?
1:59
But what was happening internally?
2:01
What was happening spiritually?
2:03
You see, what happened was Jesus was arrested.
2:07
He was falsely accused.
2:09
He was beaten and he was sentenced to death.
2:12
Then he carried the cross that they would have given him.
2:15
He carried his cross to Galgotha.
2:18
And there he was crucified between two criminals.
2:21
And like we are reading now, he hung up on the cross.
2:25
He said, Father, forgive them.
2:27
And finally, he declared it is finished.
2:32
The price for sin was paid.
2:35
And you see, on a good Friday, it's the darkest day of history,
2:40
but also the most hopeful day of history.
2:44
What felt like the end, what felt like a completion,
2:47
what felt like, wow, all of this is over,
2:50
was really just the beginning.
2:52
It's the beginning of freedom.
2:54
True freedom from sin, where we can approach the Father,
2:58
one on one, and have a relationship with him.
3:01
You know, the Bible talks about the veil was torn.
3:03
That's what happened on this day.
3:06
The veil that separated us from the presence of God
3:08
was now torn and was removed that now we can approach him.
3:12
Yet, it might have felt like an end of an era for them.
3:16
But it was the beginning of a new relationship.
3:19
There was freedom, there was hope, there was redemption,
3:22
there was true salvation.
3:24
And there was a one on one relationship
3:26
that now we have with the Father.
3:30
You see, sin was defeated.
3:32
The thing that separates us from God,
3:34
the thing that puts a divide and that keeps you
3:39
from having a relationship with God.
3:41
Now it was defeated.
3:42
Jesus took that on his back, so we don't have to.
3:45
Sin was defeated, forgiveness became available.
3:50
And God's love was fully revealed.
3:54
I think that last line is truly our biggest takeaway.
3:57
If you didn't think God loved you before,
4:00
the cross reveals that his love is available to you,
4:04
and it is real, it's genuine.
4:07
God didn't just send anyone.
4:08
He sent his only son, his one and only son for you and I,
4:13
to die the most brutal death.
4:16
It wasn't a quick death, it wasn't an easy one.
4:18
It was the most brutal death, but he did it for you and for me.
4:23
So what's our response today?
4:25
How do we spend this day?
4:28
Well, number one, I think we all need to go to church tonight.
4:31
I know that's very, very practical,
4:35
but all of us should go and honor this night
4:37
and remember this night by gathering
4:39
with the group of believers that were a part of the church
4:42
that were a part of to go and remember together.
4:45
But number two thing we need to do
4:47
is just sit and remember what Jesus did
4:49
and have a heart of gratitude and be grateful.
4:52
Yes, if you want to be somber today, you can be somber.
4:55
If you want to have a moment of silence,
4:57
have a moment of silence, whatever it is that you want to do.
5:00
But take time to remember what Jesus did for you and I.
5:04
It's hard to remember when you're at work.
5:07
It's hard to remember when you've got school.
5:09
It's hard to remember when you've got kids
5:10
because the routine doesn't change.
5:12
But that's where we have to be intentional with our day
5:15
and say, I'm going to put everything on hold.
5:18
And I'm going to remember what Jesus did for me.
5:20
It might have seemed dark for the night.
5:24
Best part about it is Sunday was coming.
5:28
And so we might not get to talk on Sunday
5:30
because I know this devote doesn't air on Sunday mornings.
5:33
But let this be your reminder,
5:35
whatever is dark in your life,
5:36
whatever you feel like has reached the end of its rope,
5:39
whatever you feel like is over and it's finished
5:42
and it's not starting again.
5:44
Because of what Jesus did,
5:45
it is truly just the beginning for you.
5:48
And God has so much in store for you
5:50
because Sunday is coming.
5:53
Father, I just thank you for today.
5:55
Lord, we thank you for your sacrifice.
5:57
Jesus, thank you for the sacrifice.
5:59
Thank you for the completion of the work on the cross, Lord.
6:03
Thank you for defeating sin.
6:06
Thank you for conquering death.
6:08
Thank you for raising again and bringing us new life
6:13
that we can be born again, filled with your spirit
6:16
and live a life that pleases you.
6:18
We thank you for it all and we remember you today
6:20
in Jesus' name, amen.
6:23
So there you have it, your five minute daily dose of heaven.
6:26
