Nandy Backs Burnham, Criticizes Labour Block

On March 23rd, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy believes greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham

should have been allowed to run as a Labour MP candidate.

Back in January, Labour's National Executive Committee, led by Prime Minister Sir Kear

Starmer's allies, blocked Burnham from standing in the Gorton, and Denton by election.

That seat was once a safe win for Labour, but without him, the party came in third, behind

the Green Party and Reform UK.

The official reason was to avoid the cost of a new mayoral election, since Burnham

would have had to resign his current role.

Many in Labour suspected deeper motives, like fears he might challenge Starmer for party

leadership from Parliament.

Nandy, a close ally and former neighbour in politics, called Burnham a huge asset to Labour

and said she devoted to let him stand.

She's the highest-ranking party figure to criticize the bloc publicly.

50 Labour MPs signed a letter protesting the decision, and Deputy Leader Lucy Powell,

the only NEC member to back him, later admitted, Burnham probably would have held the seat.

This isn't Nandy's first time speaking out against her own government.

Last month, she labelled internal drama, unforgivable.

Meanwhile, leadership whispers around Starmer continue, fueled by recent criticisms from figures

like Angela Rainer and calls for change from Scottish.

the pressure on Labour could intensify, potentially sparking bigger party, shifts down the line.
