Hello everyone and welcome. This is Lockdown Boston College.

I'm your host AJ Black.

We're gonna look at over and under on wins for the football team next season as fan dual has their latest odds.

We're gonna look at tiers of the hires for the basketball search.

Who are good hires?

Who are?

I can live with those hires and who are red flags for me.

And we're gonna give you two new names and the timeline for the higher as presented by an expert in the coaching search.

So let's dive in.

The new coach is gonna be probably named by the end of this week according to Adam Zagoria of Zags blog dot com who also works.

I believe with the athletic.

This is a guy that's very well connected knows his college basketball better almost as good as anyone out there.

And so it sounds like the, you know, I think this is gonna line up with what we heard about this Parker search firm.

The Parker search firm is the one that Blake James hired to help run the coaching search.

And on their website, they say usually it's in a week or two.

This would line right up with the two weeks.

So hopefully by the end of this week, we'll know who the head coaches.

Now, Zagoria also listed the most up to date names on the list of play of coaches that have showed interest or they have contacted or interviewed didn't really get into the details of who interviewed.

But the names there are many of the ones we've already heard guys like Joe Gallo, Jerry McNamara, Eric Olan,

Luke Murray, Eric Conkel, and Jay Laranaga.

Those are our names that we've heard over and over again.

No, there's no Bobby Hurley.

There's no Jared Dudley. Those names have I've said before have not been linked to this coaching search.

However, Zagoria had two other names that we have not heard linked to B.C. on this list.

And that is Akron head coach John Gross.

And I'm gonna totally butcher his name up Chris Girlofson of San Francisco says Chris Girlofson, the head coach of San Francisco.

So when I saw both of these names, one gave me the reaction of like, oh, okay, I mean, I could learn a little bit more.

And the other one I went, oh no, this one wreaks like B.C.

Neither of them really strike my fancy totally, but one I could live with.

So Chris Gross has an interesting career.

He's now the, I mean, sorry, John Gross, excuse me, he's the head coach of Akron since 2017.

And since been being at Akron, they have made the NCAA tournament four out of the last five years.

They went 29 and five this year, 28 and seven last year.

And they've had a he's had a 69% winning percentage in the Mac and a 68% winning percent winning overall during his time at Akron.

They have the eighth most points per game with 89 this year.

So there are high scoring offense, really look good.

Obviously they have 29 wins with Miami of Ohio losing to UMass Akron jumped in and earned the championship for the conference.

Now dig deeper.

Gross has more, he's got some skeletons in his closet too, I think in terms of just red flags.

First of all, he came to Akron after coaching a bunch of, you know, had a couple stops.

His first stop was the with the Ohio bobcats where again, he made the NCAA tournament twice.

He made the sweet 16 and then he left to join the Illinois fighting.

I'll align.

Funny enough, he left Ohio to go to Illinois and who replaced him at Ohio.

Good old friend Jim Christian.

So there's a little connection there, but the part that I think folks get really worried about and I get it because it wasn't good was his time at Illinois.

He went 37 and 53 during his time there and he had a disastrous last two years where he went five and 13 one year in big 10 play and eight and 10.

He only he never went above 500 in big 10 play, even though he did make posties and tournaments four out of the five years.

So that obviously doesn't cut it for a school like Illinois, he gets fired ends up in Akron and he has some success.

So I get the I get the hesitation with him because of that time with Illinois like he's just like Jim Christian bombed at TCU.

You you have the similar almost the exact same thing with gross where he goes to Illinois doesn't do a whole lot and then it's back in the lower levels again.

That being said, he's been super successful like you look at what he's done with Akron and it's hard to not be impressed.

So does he get a second chance is that something you as a Boston college fan want to see him do.

I'm not sure where I would be at with that.

I mean, he's kind of in the middle of there where it's like, yeah, this he could hit it out of the park with his higher like again, a good offense, history of winning hits on that.

But there's also those worries, the worries that things are just not going to work out because there are some big time red flags there that could really impact, you know, the future of BC basketball.

That's John gross now girl of sin is the one that I this one is like giant red flags waving high in the fly high in the sky.

Because I look at his record and what he's done and I don't understand why he's a candidate because it just it reeks to me of Jim Christian and Earl Grant again.

Girl of sin has coached at San Francisco from the last four years, that's it, he had one year, we were just.

Interim coached Hawaii, but at San Francisco, he's won 62% of his games, never made the NCAA tournament and is a one, you know, he's.

One excuse me two out of the four seasons these Bennett San Francisco he's gone above 500 you look at the stats is nothing like.

Urshattering what he does is often you know the amount of points is team scores I know this you know they're in a conference with like Gonzaga it's a very top every conference, but.

I don't get this one and it worries the heck out of me that Chris girl of sin is going to be that kind of BC higher that we got the last two years my brother yesterday show I said it's the who.

Chris girl of sin is the who of this one because I saw his name with the list and I literally did that reaction who because I've never heard of him he's obviously not been in any like high leverage games that nationally people would know about he's a west coast guy so he's been in the west coast since.

2015 yes he has east coast routes but he was coaching at Hartford like is that really that deep of like the like is that like that like is that something you honestly would consider having roots in this area because yeah coached at Hartford.

Hartford is even a basketball program anymore they went D3 and that was it so I really really hope that boss this is just a safety plan for BC if everything falls apart and that they don't have to get to that safety plan.

Because you're going to we'll talk in a moment about the tears of who could be the next higher.

There's already some names that could be coming off the list soon I just mentioned gross he could be the next head coach butler after that mod of just retired like he's the favorite to get that job he could cross him off Syracuse just lost out on the USF coach brace Hopkins brace Hodgkins excuse me.

And so are they going to go with Jerry McNamara like names are going to stop coming off and then what if what if that USF coach shoots down Providence and Providence goes for Joe Gallo like it could tear and then Olin like you see what I mean like Olin could go to Arizona state if they don't I saw article and I had double click to make sure it was real that they might be looking at master P the rapper but you see what I mean like the BC is going to act fast that's why when they said the game.

And like this week I'm actually kind of hoping it's earlier in the week so that they can lock in the guy that they want and now in a moment I'm going to get into who the coaches are that I think would be the best fits who I would be okay with and who are just too many red flags for me to get into or to really acknowledge I'll talk about all of that in just a moment.

Locked on BC AJ black here love me or hate me I'm here to talk about basketball and I've been looking at once Zagoria came out with the list of options I started to rank them in my brain and I teared them into three different tiers you have the home run hires you have the I can live with these hires and the there's way too many flags I can't get behind these.

So let's start with the red flags who on this list are just persona non grata I don't want to see them at BC and one name that came up and I actually I should have said this earlier but we've talked about him is john becker I don't want john becker.

The reason I don't want john becker is that he's coached at UVM he's about 60 years old really has no history of recruiting at a higher level that BC could use and.

Do yourself a favor and look at the lawsuit that was filed against him and you'll see why I don't want him here I didn't even hear about this because BC had granted that point but it's bad so i'll set with that we don't need john becker here that is you know fine he can stay in UVM I don't want him additionally girl of sin is on my list too like he is.

way down the road I don't want him here there's nothing about him that checks off any boxes like he doesn't have a history of winning he's not from the east he is not an up and coming coach he wouldn't bring much excitement to the program like nothing about him strikes me as a good fit for BC in fact as I said in the previous segment he strikes me if BC just goes down the line of this is what we've done with our grant.

Jim Christian with their hires if they just do the same thing again it's going to be girl of sin and i'm going to be so mad because then we're going to have to deal with a couple more years of just bad bass bad basketball but just like no interest and that is not what I want to see here okay.

So I got to shove him off those are the two so I mean credit to to to.

To Blake James if that's the hires just those two are the two I don't want.

Everyone else I can argue and and say that I can handle pieces of it's even if i'm still worried about parts of it okay for instance Jerry McNamara he's like really close to the edge right he's only coach two years he's making the NCAA tournament now a lot of upside their potential.

Well upside potential though worries me because yes he could end up great and that's that's awesome but how many upside potentials do well.

For like a year they run into a great class right you run into a really good class in your recruiting and maybe it wasn't even him that recruited these guys they come in and they win and then that class disappears and that you see all their skeletons in the closet right.

That's what kind of worries with McNamara the the amount of work there is just it's not enough for me.

Eric Conkel will be right above him I I could live with Eric Conkel he's get connections to Blake James he's the Tulsa head coach good offensive system they've won quite a bit he's improved.

He's not the splashiest hire by any means.

But I I could live with him I you know it would fix the offensive style he's got the wins he's got connections he probably understands how BC is from his time at Miami.

I could live with him i'd still be able to worry.

Right around him i'd put John gross John gross John gross and Conkel to me are kind of one a one b.

Gross has the the big red flag in the middle of it but I almost want to say with him he's got way more.

Success and history success and then most guys on this were on this list so i'm almost willing to give him a chance because he just seems like a winning coach.

Like yeah he has the history that has passed that remind me of christian a little bit.

But gross is is someone I think is higher you know see here and honestly we can argue about it but he's probably gonna send up a baller anyway so i'm saying it now but.

I don't really think he's gonna end up here right above him i'm putting Joe Gallo Joe Gallo and folks have asked me I want to want to get back to this.

Some folks have only heard my 60 second clips on tiktok or you can follow me on tiktok or on you know any of the ones I put these you know shorts up and it's all clips from the show.

So many of my clips have not talked about why I don't think Joe Gallo is the right fit and I have changed my thoughts from weeks ago and I'll explain why.

You dig deep into his offensive scheme and it again it's not it's it's probably the worst offensive scheme of any of these coaches that you're looking at ought to be frank right he has not done a whole lot.

Is defense is a good scheme and yeah it's it's just like funky zone and maybe that would be fun to work maybe it wouldn't.

But you talk to some folks and they're worried that against athletes and ACC level athletes it's not going to work so I you know i've been reading about more and more in him it's kind of changed my view that being said to.

There's something about Joe Gallo.

That just seems like a winner like this guy just wins wins wins and if you gave him more resources which I would imagine BC could do.

What could he do with that so he's above all these other guys in my opinion and you know this middle tier like honestly like you could probably change a few things here and there but I I put him a little bit higher right now so that's where I have him.

I'm going to say tied with him I'm going to put Jay Laranaga Jay Laranaga obviously has had a lot of experience both you know at the pro level.

I think he had I he strikes me more as a guy that's going to be an NBA level coach at some point I worry about him at the college level but you know he's got the name right Laranaga obviously Jim was great so Jay could also be you know good as well.

He's got a huge connection to Blake James and there's a comfort level there he worked for the Celtics and Brad Stevens.

He's been waiting for that spot.

You know Providence is looking at him there's a bunch of schools that have been trying to get him there's obviously something there could be see get him i've warmed up more damn.

But the lack of doing much of anything does worry me then my top two choices.

And honestly I would take either of these in a heartbeat.

And i'm not going to rank them one a one b they're just my top two Luke Murray of Yukon was in that list as well now if you have not heard about this and I did not even I just was not aware I just didn't know this.

But it makes sense because I remember seeing a couple years ago Bill Murray being in a lot of URI games I have a buddy who covers URI and I was like oh wow and then I forgot that he had a kid.

That was a coach and that kid is Luke Murray so interesting side note I had no clue so his dad is Bill Murray from Groundhogs Day.

Caddy Shack Ghostbusters you know was a porkies or meatballs I forget I was porkies right you know this guy is is a legendary actor so it's interesting but you know he's worked at Louisville he worked at Yukon he's the offensive scheme behind everything that Dan Hurley does and obviously a great recruiter Yukon does a lot with the little he's been waiting for his big chance.

And so if you're looking to get the next up and coming guy that has not had a chance to coach yet but has a pedigree that you really well you know really speaks a lot Luke Murray would be near the top so I have him way up there.

And then next to him I have Eric Olin Eric Olin as I said on yesterday show is my pick he's my guy I think but I would be happy with him or Luke Murray at this point Olin you know is it New Mexico.

Super smart coach that seems to know everything very well regarded like if BC can't get him now he's going to end up someplace big next year like this is your chance to get a guy that continues the program like literally if you check off the boxes of everything you're looking for a coach he hits everything Luke Murray doesn't because Luke hasn't coached yet.

Olin does he's one he can do a lot like he put together a program like got at New Mexico and they're you know they were on the verge to making the NCAA tournament they were a bubble team he burns a good offense like he's you know does analytics like he's got everything that you want so to he's my top and so that's my my thing so I go back to girl of sin that's the one that I'm going to be banging my head against my table if they hire me.

I'm going to be banging my head against my table if they hire him because I just it's would be so BC to all the way up to Olin who I've been saying over and over again I'd love to see a Boston college when our final segment let's talk a little football the the odds makers have their new over unders for the season and who boy BC is really low and I'll explain what that means in just a moment.

I would love to spend a little time talking about fan duels newest over under spreads and so.

I saw Zach blocker be of locked on Auburn post his for for the for the tigers and I was like oh I should check BC then I remembered that I can't check BC because it's blocked in state so I had to have Mitch send me the screenshot so what is BC's over under for next year.

What does Vegas say after two intense season they have them at three and a half wins would you be happy with three and a half wins or four wins.

You know many of you will not so are you thinking that this is going to be the year that they would go over on this now sometimes if you listen to me I'm usually hammering the over and a low number like this does make you stop to think like oh if they figure out something here.

Make me some McKenzie's the right the big deal on this transfer portal classes better than the group that they had last year and they can avoid injuries and these coaches are okay.

Then maybe they'll get the four wins.

But I also look and I said this before in the show their schedule is brutal they're playing three power for conference teams out of schedule out of conference on the road against Cincinnati on the road against Notre Dame and at home against Rutgers.

That makes things real tough then you play Miami you play Florida state you play Duke you played Georgia Tech like they're playing a very very tough schedule and I'm not saying that this is excusing anything I'm just saying if I was betting man I had my money.

Right now I wouldn't be betting because I honestly don't know I am so like you some of you guys get on me for this right like sometimes you guys think I wear murder and gold sunglasses too much and then I'm too positive about things or I'm not tougher and I I realized looking at this like if you want to if I had like a C note my hand right and I had to make a bet I would I would not feel confident all that that like I just would not like because there's a chance that.

There's a chance that yes this ends up working for BC and you know they beat Cincinnati because maybe Cincinnati is you know struggling you beat Syracuse and you beat Rutgers there's your three right there on top of Maine you win your bet.

But there's also that odds that you brought in a quarterback from Saginaw Valley you're redoing your entire offensive line you redid your entire coaching staff.

That maybe it doesn't work so as someone who you know you know weighing the pros and cons I way off on this right now you know practices just starting it's hard to get a read on what anything is like and honestly like you know you want to see like more to see you know like do you have a quarterback do you have the right things going it's way too early they're not even in page yet so right now I look at that odds and I say

you know honestly right now you can make the argument for either and I'll I'll be the first to admit that many times when I see those odds I'm like BC's going over on this one this year beat you know it's like five and a half they're going to get six wins it's going to happen.

I'm just so jaded from last year where they went to attend that right now I'm just I would just set it out right now I would sit this one out until we get a better read of what's going on.
