New York marks 25 years since September 11 attacks

0:00Good morning and welcome to Weekend Sunrise. We want to go straight to New York now and acquire it as fallen over the city as it marks 25 years since its darkest day, September 11, 2001. Terrorists, hijacked planes and flew them directly into the towers of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon and one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, killing almost 3,000 people on the day and many more thousands since. The attacks changed America forever, sent shockwaves throughout the world and launched the war on terror and our US correspondent, Miley Hogan, is in New York City for us this morning good morning to you Miley. A somber moment for a country that's still feeling the loss so strongly 25 years on. David Morn, good morning. It's been an extremely emotional day here in New York City and you can really feel how New Yorkers are going through this day and the emotions are still so

1:04raw for them. We're down at ground zero at the moment. They've just opened it back up to the public and hundreds of people have been coming in here to pay their respects and earlier in the day that is when that official ceremony took place. The first moment of silence falling at 846 AM to honour the moment that American Airlines flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. There were five moments of silence after that to mark the other moments where those planes crashed and those towers fell and for the first time this year there was a seventh moment of silence to honour the victims who have died from cancer and other illnesses linked to 911. We did speak with some family members who lost loved ones that day and it is clear just how war this still is for them. My brother Adam, Adam Peter Arias and he was the Vice President Operations at Eurobrokers 84th Floor building two. He cleared off his floor and got them all out and all of his

2:07co-workers thought that he made it out also but he went back to help the firefighters clear floors and that's when he met his device. When you heard that your brother had gone back to help, did you think that's something my brother would want? Oh yeah. Of course he would be that guy. Sadly there were just so many people with stories like that. They had closed down the streets around the memorial and New Yorkers had gathered. They were just talking to each other, sharing their moments of grief and it really did feel like everyone in the streets had something to say about that day. So many people can remember where they were, who they were with on September 11th and 25 years ago guys. Thousands and thousands of stories are each of them heartbreaking and just really interesting to hear Miley talking about there that more than 9,000 people have died from illnesses related to that dust that was all around New York City on that day. Really interesting too that there is an entire

3:09generation out there in around 100 million Americans who weren't actually born when 9, 11 happened. So really important that the country and the world does commemorate and remember moments like this so that that generation can also feel it as acutely as we did. Yeah that's a very powerful shot there looking at all of the previous presidents standing together and Donald Trump chose not to attend New York and was in his convention. He's midterm convener.
