Why Aren't Any Rookie QBs Starting in Week 1?

I was making it interesting keeping it fun and fresh. Yeah. Over in easily South Carolina. Belovely, easily South Carolina here in the upstate of South Carolina. Where it still feels like Satan's ass crack every day. It is hot. We hope everybody is doing well out there. We appreciate you for tuning in here on a fine. It's a, you'll be listening to some of Friday. We shoot sometimes the day before, sometimes the day before, before your favorite day of the year. Yeah. But ball kickoff day. Yes, it's weird though. Wednesday. Yeah. Real time. We're in the store. The FedEx man delivering the boom, boom and chrome. Holly boxes. They fall. Yeah, baseball. They fall. Good. You have to say that. Good clarification.

1:00And we were talking about that pre-shell. Like, who's executive decision was that? Yeah, lots of products coming out at non-stop. And it's like football season kicking off today. And boom and chrome's launching. I'd be curious if that actually impacted the numbers of the product. Like how well they did sales wise. Or if it's going to impact like the hype of the product. Because frankly, I've heard nothing of it. Minus what we've talked about in shop. Like I haven't seen any news. I haven't seen anything about it. Well, you want, but you know where you got to go to get that news. Shameless. Yeah, good setup there. Like a good co-host here. Setting one another up. The collectionation app would tell you on the release calendar that's on the home page that is coming out today. It may still leave you with mystery of why. But you would know and be able to see them like two weeks apart. The football and the baseball launching. You know, baseball's about like the end of the season.

2:01Which you've got, I guess prospects for next year. I am a big football basketball court guy. And I collected baseball growing up. It's probably my least depth of knowledge is full transparency. I can name the offensive lineman for like more teams. And I would care to admit in college probably. But baseball harder. I don't understand the logic of the baseball timing. And someone can message us and enlighten us. And there's a lot more baseball collectors than anything else. So I'm in the minority year. But my thing is like, baseball is kind of weird where it's like the number one draft picks pretty much go into minor leagues for a little bit. And so they can kind of like prove themselves. So I think it's interesting like the concept. Because I feel like there's not a huge college baseball market. Whereas like football there is a huge football. You go to play in the pro. Yes. And minus this year. Minus this year. Again, this is strained all around.

3:02We're not going to have a single starting rookie quarterback that I'm aware of unless like last minute change happens here. Maybe that is the truth. That's true. That's true. Everyone out. Maybe. But it's the first time we were doing the math. It's been a long time since I haven't been a single rookie. But to your point, baseball, you have that pump. Yeah, the college. Well, there are a few people go straight to college to pros. So you're still kind of tracing that guy till when he actually gets called up. And there has been a lot of call ups. We've been missing that on the app. Some of the call ups the impact of their cards. Yeah, no rock, til I was big got called up. Yeah. weeks. And so you're seeing that. But I think it is. Baseball is strange to track because you never know when they're going to pop. Yeah. And yeah, like the Kent miss guys are pretty accurate. And baseball's so many guys. And it's all over the app. And if I was if I could watch more games, I might know more because you're hearing, you know, maybe the local announcer's or whoever mentioned guys that are coming up. But like, she's it's tough.

4:03And you don't immediately, because I'm a college sports guy like so you don't immediately. Like you say, I go fall in love with you know, Cam Camerilla Clemson. And then well, it takes four years to make it to the big leagues or whatever. Like, okay, well, I still love them. So perform, but I don't know when he's actually coming to put in the pros. You know, we are at the end of the day, a local card shop and a small business. So, it's just it's fun to kind of see that and see the card sitting on our shelf, see it on our website and then you have a digital pack of it. More than 100%. And speaking of stuff from the app, we do have some articles that bring up some of the players. We have NFL kicking off this weekend. We mentioned none of those star rookies, but it's funny. You know, the hobby is going to find someone to value. And quarterbacks are always higher values. I mean, Dosa and Ty Simpson lead that. But it's been fascinating to watch them kind of also crawl back to Earth with their values. Because reality is I think the people that wanted them have gotten them. So you got to supply them to Mancurve kind of. Yeah. You're wendling down, but none of these guys are starting. And it's like, it's a it's a strange rookie class to me.

10:12Like after the last few seasons. Yeah. I mean, it's it's weird to me. Like I get why they're not starting them necessarily. You know, they want to keep them healthy. They want to see them develop. They, you know, want to see that maturity level. But also you just spent how many millions of dollars to get them on your team and then you're not going to utilize them. Hey, we're saving them, you know, but it's a bit, but it's the right thing to do because I think they some of these guys have been fraud early. Yeah. Playing tour because you know, if you got a battle line or bat, you know, which is fair, but it's like, I don't know. I haven't seen it in a long time. We're pretty much across the board. That's the case. And I wonder if it was because like one team did it. So then they're like, okay, we can all kind of do it. Yeah, I don't know. That's past my pay grade of figuring it out. But I think they, uh, they, there's a lot of guys that I, not a lot, but they're a handful. It kind of kind of memory that just really, I think I, they're development rush along too fast.

11:14And so it's a fine line. You got to win now. So I think if these guys end up proving to be, I mean, it's staffers locked in. I mean, Tyson's not going to be Stafford out. It's Stafford's healthy. But he is 37. Maybe 38. I don't, you know, he and he can get injured. And Tyson's going to be in there. Ready or not. And say the same thing with Ninozo with Kurt Cousins in Oakland. I just said Oakland. It's Las Vegas. Oakland Raiders. I've been looking at old Bojax and cards and all of them say Oakland Raiders. So Freudian slip. You'll know what you know, I'm an OG by calling them, uh, Oakland. But uh, Las Vegas. Yeah. They were Los Angeles Raiders too at one time. Yeah, so you're, you're dissolved. But they've been for it. They've been for different cities. People in the comments are going to be like, you know, no ball. Yeah, I know ball. It's this. I know I named every city they've been in. But yes, the uh, Las Vegas Raiders. Yep. So if you had to. Partial owner.

12:15If you had to pick a rookie this year, who are you putting your money on most likely? I like downs in Dallas. Caleb Bounds played Ohio State. He's a freak and really good. His cards are actually showing that a little bit. I think they only, the market's kind of only rookie to have a price and volume increase. Yeah. Cause I think he is that like once you get through the, the hype and the, okay, it's a quarterback. It's a new product and it's quarterback and you get through all that and you go, all right, who's a dog? Who's playing and who's got the biggest upside? Yep. He is on defensive, which has a limit, but he's got a lot of playmaking ability. So he could be exciting. I think he's going to be good. And I think love could be great in Arizona. I still don't know if they have the team around him that will enable that. Yeah, I agree. So he's exciting. He's fast, powerful and runs great.

13:16I mean, it's like got all the tools. He's going to be a good one. But I think, the more I think about, I think Josh Allen's going to have a breakout year. For your own well being, I hope he does too. That's all I know for sure. I think Trevor Lawrence might too. You know, so I think Jacksonville and Buffalo are set up for big season. I need this. I mean, I only want to talk about it. It's not related to this show, but I went to Clemson. Do I need to say more? I'm a Clemson grad. Robert Clemson fan. I need Josh Allen and Buffalo to win the title. I need to then to play Jacksonville in it be a nail buyer to the end. In the AC Championship, I need my pro teams to deliver this year more than ever because it looks very dreadful. See, when I saw, so I was checking the score of the game. So I was out and about this weekend. And I went to Furman. So I checked the Furman game and I was like, damn,

14:18they just got their ass handed to them by Tennessee. But you know, they got paid a lot of money. Whatever it was going to happen. It's going to happen. Whatever. Then I go and check the score of the Clemson game. And I was like, oh, it's actually the same score. I was like, now that I do feel that's a little bit of a risk. Because they aren't getting paid to be beaten. No, we're paying, we're paying a lot to get beat. We're paying our coaches a lot, our players a lot, for a very suspect product. And we'll, hey, I'll be patient. We'll see what happens. No, I'm not throwing any darts. The headlines are writing themselves now. And I have two words that inconsolate everything I feel before we turn the page. Now what? That's really it. That's my, does my two words for Clemson? Okay. All right. Now what? Let's see. We lose George Sutheran this week. It could be a wake forest moment.

15:20Tommy Bowden. LC. Well, and not because I want that to happen. But it's almost starting to yield that way. A little iron weird way. I didn't think I ever say it. And it's very different because we should build statues for our current coach. But we're not living in 2018. So we'll see. And it's so hard because he has such a. Oh, God. Nobody wants to know. Oh, God, I would, I don't, I don't, I want him to fix it. But you have to fix it. Yeah. I mean, you're gonna pay a lot of money. No, I want, I want you to fix it. We don't have to wait. We're not the one in the national title, but we can't go. Get embarrassed. It was actually his, his, uh, this past game was the biggest score. Yeah, Marlon. That's very bad. And that's telling. So we'll see. For your sanity. We'll move on. Go bills. Go. Yeah.

16:20In a weird way, more excited for Bowman football. We've got Bowman baseball coming out. They've got all the prospects. Some that don't have a car jet like Malachi Tony who had a ridiculous game for Miami. I mean, there's a lot of guys that had breakouts. And literally he doesn't have a car other than a leaf card. And I love your leaf. No offense, but that's not a mainstream card. And it's not one that most collectors are even have on the radar. You know, and it will be out with Bowman. You have. And then, hey, Archmaning, congratulations. I know. I saw that. He needs to know that he signed with tops. I love how like, they made a whole theatrical thing. He signed. Yeah. Yeah. And it's kind of like, I understand. I love a good marketing angle. And I love the ups. I'm just saying like, like, he really had any other choice. Hey, yeah. Like, they've got all the license. What do you, yeah, I'm kind of, cashed in all in with Phenini.

17:21Ah, nah, nah, nah. It's what he needed to do. It's what tops needed to do. It's the most no shit news of the week. But it's still no worth it in the less. All his cards will be there. It sounds like he won't even have a non-licensed version moving forward. He does have non-licensed the past though, because I do, we sold some of them. We've got the Phenini College cards with Texas. But every pro card for the foreseeable future will be wearing tops or tops sub-brand, Bowman. I'm curious to see what his card market is going to look like in the new Topps product. Because I mean, he's arguably like a good player, but not like out of this world, crazy, generational. And it's, you know, his name is carrying a lot of that. And, you know, all respect to him. Like, he stayed with Texas. Like, he didn't have to do that. And, but I'm just curious as to how the market will respond to that,

18:21because it's like, do they care more about the name and the family and where he came from or how he's actually playing. And, you know, how he might do in the NFL, which presumably, yes, you'll be going to exactly. Yes, yes, yes, yes. It's, it's exactly those things. I don't, and right now it's based his values on the surname, because his stats don't support the number. But the, you know, you could argue that he's shown flashes and potential, but it's that, and that's their name in there. It's a different, it's a different number. And I think he could be that guy. But he hasn't put it on film yet completely. Like, he's shown flashes of it, but he hasn't won at that level yet. This will, this, this year we'll be telling with that. And then ultimately, you know, well, the pros will bear it out. And I think, but the name will carry it longer than it should. How many you see it with like, Shadour Sanders?

19:22Yeah, it is. And it's, it is. It, it, it, he's had moments of glory. And he made it into being a starter last year. So he had some amount of justification, but it was name based to, and it's still, I still think there is a level of that. And that's real. That's, that's cards. There's awareness and there's, you know, desired, like around, you know, the legacy that their fathers, uncles, brothers, whoever might be that care, that same name of build, which is part of the hobby. But at a certain point, it does become what, what have you done? And arts is made, our demanding story is yet to be told on that front. Hey, and he could have an absolute generational breakout year this year. Oh, he could. He's got the talent. I mean, there's no, there's no question. But let's see it. We'll see it. Jeremiah Smith's a freak, though. Let me just tell you that right now. He's gonna be on the best virus series ever played a game. I mean, he already is. He is unbelievable at Ohio State. I think he's gonna win the highs.

20:22And so we'll see what happens. All right, switching gears a little bit. We are going to do our third installment of iconic cards and the history behind them. Yep. And this week we are going to be talking about the 1986 FLIR 57 Michael Jordan card. I mean, as I say those names, those words, you can probably picture the card in your head in big shining lights. You know, can't really get more iconic than that. So I want to hear your thoughts on this card. So I grew up on a street called Ibanehoe Circle. It sounds much nicer than it really was. Had everything I needed, not everything I wanted. Had an extra neighbor. His name was Oliver Bruton. Oliver, if you're out there, thumbs up, buddy. You turn me on to basketball cards. But I was already a Jordan fan and a card collector.

21:27And everybody clicked at baseball cards. Like football basketball cards were not, I mean, they're, if they're, I don't know, 80% as popular as football. Baseball is still number one by far. It was like 20% as popular. Like it compared to baseball in the mid 80s. And I would, but I was a huge Jordan fan. You know, played basketball as a good. And like so he, you know, he was the greatest player at the time. You know, had his rookie season. I was like eight, seven, then coming up. Oliver Bruton moves next door. Has the whole entire set of 86 Flier basketball. No one had basketball cards. Like again, you don't know how rare. Well, like if you mid 80s, another printed more than you realized, but they didn't print compared baseball. No where near. So the fact that the next door neighbor had that set, I would let it go over there and just stare at them even then. And it didn't have the near the value now. Many were worth, they're worth a lot, but not nothing. I mean, you were talking about like Jordan,

22:28Rick, a couple hundred bucks. Maybe I don't know. Maybe. And that I'd go over there just to look at them. That slipped through. Had the full savery card. It was like the, and how rare that was. Like there's no one, I didn't know anything collected. I had that. He had those. I'd go there, stare at them and say, one day I'm going to have that. And I had posters all over my room. And, but I remember that story mainly because he had a door. I don't know if I would remember his name. I love y'all, but you know, you know, we, but we had different friends. We weren't hanging out as much. But he had those, but you had those cards. I really like to look out. I think I'd made, I don't know how many attempts to buy them. He never sold them. Damn it. I wonder if he's still, he's probably sold them by now. And which was he had? And he was not like, or they were thrown away. Yeah, because they were perfect. I mean, I don't know if that Jordan was 10, but they were mint condition. So grew up always idolizing those cards. I could have bought it. It, once I got back in the hobby, you mean like,

23:28yeah, a few years ago with boys and everything. Could have bought that card. I don't buy that card. I mean, like, but I still, we've had a couple walk in the store. Some crazy stories and different things. Still waiting on my version of that card. But it is, you know, the iconic shot, the, it's almost created a lore amongst it. Sometimes you look at something like that. It's cool, but it's like, you know, the artwork on the flier on the quies. It's not, it's not like nothing that crazy. Is it classic? Sure. But that's not overstated. That gold, the flier yellow. Yeah, it's okay. But it's more of what it means and what it signifies. It tells a whole story of his career. He's in the air and he's going over everyone and he's about the dunk it. And it's like, that's what he ended up doing to the entire industry. Yeah. And it's still doing. And now his cards are just that much more valuable.

24:28But it was a chase then and a chase now. I mean, at the highest level. And it's, I don't know. I think it will go down as and it's, it's, it's, most, most people's top four or five, most iconic cards, you know, 52 man, all mean, yeah, all that stuff. But the bonus Wagner, Mickey Manell, this card, and then probably can be a favorite, yeah, can't go for junior, uh, rookie card. Uh, and so we just talked about last week. Yeah. We just went down two weeks ago. We just weren't going down the list of junk wax cards that are really hard to find junk. Only the Jordan was ever done wax. The baseball was maybe, but, uh, yeah, but it is a classic card. And when I will own in a very high grade, it's some point. Yeah, you want to spend, uh, you know, between 300 and 800,000 for a PSA, done. I'm going to, I'm going to find that thing. I can, uh, like a yard sale or something.

25:31I want to find, I, I got to discover it. I'm going to find Ryan, like, fun story like, oh, man. I'm sucker for a good binder. I don't know, it's an hour's going to the one we already had. There's some back dead. It has an absolute terrible card to him, but I still find myself spending 30 minutes. What am I doing? I'm going to buy you a defensive lineman, defensive lineman. Yes. We will have be having an episode come out. We talked about the Jordan Jersey last week going, but Rob go, I'm not selling it. Goff, I'm not selling it. I have to edit this appropriately. Yeah, I actually, Rob. Yeah. Rob's, Rob, who has the, will be in figuring out what that word is. Anyway, we start to Rob, who will be on doing an episode who, oh, is the owner of the 19, 93 game three game three Michael Jordan,

26:34Jordan game warringers out of statements there. We did talk to him. I wanted to ask, I wanted to be like, okay, like, because he pulled up the the Rodman Jersey. He just like, was all the Rodman Jersey from the same series. And like, I'm like, so is this is this Michael Jordan Jersey? Is this like in your laundry basket? Yeah, like, like, is it just like on a hangar? Like, how are you? I was like, did you pick that up? A good will like, what, what, where did this come from? Yeah, because I did say, show us something because I knew he's already sent that one into the auction house, but he had that, he had the, the card of Jordan who was in the Jersey, you know, from that game. He's got to retake his clicks. Nice guy. Yeah. Highly as well. You didn't know I'd be able to fill that. I had our new, I had to say, I know, got, I just, it's some of my Amy like, that's a wow game. You know, it's a league for it. It's crazy. Oh, man. Yeah. But I'm, that Jersey, it mixed the cards like it just, it shows

27:38Jordan's, you know, icon nature in, in the hobby. And I'm curious to see what else he does and how else he markets that. And what other crazy things the market does with him. No, we're going to, we'll break it new, we'll break the news here. You know, what, what they pulled from it, but it was a fun interview. Yeah. All right, guys, we're cutting in here. It's football week. Football alerts here on collection nation. I mean, a weird day for them to start the NFL season, but I think everyone's here for it. I know you were itching. Yes. For the season to start. So, you know, a day early who can complain really get the defensive struggle that is every Seattle game. The sea hawks, hello, the defense is bad ass, but man, it does make force a lot of punting. Yeah. I mean, it was a good first game to really ring in the season. But, you know, Drake May couldn't, couldn't hold off. He was doing good until, you know, three interceptions in the fourth quarter is a,

28:43I'll say this. Like, if I was drawing up what, okay, what would make for good TV for the NFL? Like, if I'm what I want to happen? Two of your leagues, pop 50 players go down with injuries. AJ Brown and I said, maybe top 30, but AJ Brown goes down, Sam D'Arnold goes down and Ray May throw his three interceptions. It was a terrific game. Yeah. Like, I mean, it was a good game. It was a great game. I know there's, I'll guess, Nate Milk. That's how it's supposed to be. That's supposed to be awful. No, but it was, it's kind of just took a little bit of a thing. Darnal getting hurt. I was like, I'm like the first player. Yeah, first series. I was like, dang. And it sounds like he's going to make it back this season. It's not going to be like, maybe a few games, like a hit pointer or something. I don't know. They're getting x-rays, but it's not. He avoided the worst of it. They, uh, they said that it wasn't a fracture, but he's supposed to get in that MRI and stuff. But let's talk about cards. Drake May has been sitting the last year. Is the highest valued quarterback in that 2024 class.

29:47The last couple of months, Caleb Williams overtaking him. Hopefully my color blast continues to go up. He's not played very well when, when the lights are brightest. And he's priced like a franchise quarterback like our high end one. I don't know. It's certain points of stats matter in the records matter. And they've definitely been better with him. And I still believe in Drake May. But I'm not sure he's priced right. And I think I think you're going to start to see that because he said they got a tough early schedule. And he's been exposed a couple of times. Look, Seattle is going to expose a lot of guys. There's nothing to be ashamed of. But three interceptions in the fourth quarter and two of them were really bad. It's just careless. You can do that against the saints or the cardinals. No offense, ain't your cardinals. But let's let Seattle see all the camps. And so it's time for him to start playing better when it really matters. I think it's also an interesting question of like, you know, obviously the Patriots have so much legacy with Gronk and Tom Brady.

30:50Like they have really even in modern times, like carried the legacy of the Patriots. And I think that people really hoped that Drake May would kind of be the next wave of Tom Brady. And would bring that level of excitement and like level of domination that they had, you know, back few years ago. That's on hold a little bit right now. But I'm saying I think that his cards probably reflect that a little bit because people were so excited about his prospects and the prospects of the Patriots having another legendary run. Yeah. That if he looks the part, his name sounds the part, his play at times has shown that. But all in all though, he's not quite there yet. And it's going to be interesting to see how his cards do. Because I don't know if you have them. I want him to do well. I'm the ill will towards him. I just at certain point that last interception man, you can't you kick a fill goal and you tie the game. You don't you just throw it up like, you do that second.

31:50Yeah. I don't know. Climpson College play. You know, like, that's, oh, sorry. Yeah, man, I'm eating my dog food. Like literally, it's time for him to play while I look. Is he going to get better without AJ Brown, his top-writers, he was down with a high-angle sprain? I only get better without him. Yeah. So. But on the flip side, you know, I presume that his card market is going to be affected by this, at least in some aspect, especially. You'll see a little, I don't think it's got like tank, but it's. I think it'll dip a little bit. It'll dip a little bit. But it's goodbye opportunity. Yeah, it could be a good bye-up to people are really silly. They're mostly, I'll jump in and pass. I'll pass some of that stock last down. Because I do, but I do think it's me true. We can have objective commentary about the reality of his last two football games and the reality of his record against better teams. The second thing can be true is that I do think he's got the ability and the goods to be what he's priced to be already, if not better.

32:52But you know, you only get some of the opportunities. It's hard to tell you, you got to start cashing him in. It's more the way, like last night, like you just kitten lose the game for your team. Like, great. You've just played well enough for them to win the game. You know, like you don't have to go out there and be Superman, but you can't lose it either. The part I kind of struggle is like the last interception could have easily been avoided. And they could have tied the game. Realistically, they could have and they didn't. And so I feel like it's those easy mistakes and decision making that could be the issue. Yep. I see. I know. And Sam Darnell comes back. We'll see. I think it's going to impact his cards per se. He's already underpriced. I think he's a good buy. Telling them I win another Super Bowl with him. 35:55I own a dreading card company. And I'm like, I guess a couple of them like Pokemon, occasionally. I like Pokemon. Yeah. And so I'm like, well, we don't want to see what I get here. And, hey, you get five hollow foils. Who's falling for that one? Who's falling for that one? But lots of repacks. What are we going to open here? All right. Here, you get that premium gaming surprise bag. Okay. All right. Let's see it. May contain original sealed packs. Hollow and rare cards only. Yep. Okay. May contain how much like if you were to buy these. Was that an option? Like, could you just buy them? Oh, no. I don't think so. I didn't really do the math on that. Uh, I got to love a good hanger pack. How did you even get that out of us? That was impressive work. Hey, you just got to know how to have a professional ripper. Are you kidding me? These hands have totally not torn three more boxes. This this feels like a jumbo fat nothing to pack. We got some hollows and absolute. I mean, this would be really great for a kid that doesn't overpaying for actually craftiest cards in the set. So my brother, uh, he was buying Pokemon cards off of Amazon.

39:02He was like, yeah, we're getting like, you know, good. His no, no, we're getting like, trashed. 500 cards for like 30 bucks, but I don't think they're real. And I'm like, they're probably real, but they're probably literally they make some thanks to owner too, but they're gold. Like, so I said, my nephew had probably like this charge are just thousands of dollars on like, uh, buddy. Yeah, I'm sorry. He had a new thing. He just saying he could pull me. Well, I can bring these to my roommates title one school. The kids love over there. So all you can do is for. I don't know if I even if we want to even get in on this. That was so. Good moral. If you go to Dave and Busters and you win tickets, I would avoid these. Unless you want based cards. Not good. All right. Well, that's that's it.
