The NFL is switching up the start of the regular season this year.

The opening night game, expected to feature the Seattle Seahawks raising their Super Bowl

banner, will kick off on a Wednesday evening on NBC one day.

Ahead of the usual Thursday slot, this tweak makes room for the league's first game

in Australia on Thursday, pitting the San Francisco 49ers against the Los Angeles Rams.

News couldn't slot anything on Friday due to a 1961 broadcasting law that blocks NFL

games on Fridays and Saturdays during high school and college football time.

Seahawks fans see the upside right away, with their next big match up arriving a full 24

hours sooner than planned.

There's also chatter about sinking schedules with the Seattle Mariners baseball game nearby,

which could shift to daytime if needed, just like past, playoff, overlaps.

For the last two seasons, the league opened with Friday night games in Brazil, but that's

off the table now.

The most recent Wednesday kickoff happened back in 2012, when the New York Giants faced

the Dallas Cowboys.

We'll have to wait until May for the full schedule at least to learn the Seahawks opponent,

but for now, it's all about that earlier jump into the action.
