Northern Ireland Audit: Late GCSE Results, Unclear Teaching Standards

On April 1st, a new audit from the Northern Ireland Audit Office drops a harsh truth

GCE results come way too late in a kid's school journey to.

Really gait education quality, they say there's no solid definition of what good teaching

even means, and the department lacks basic data on how pupils, schools, and the whole.

System are performing, meanwhile, spinning on special educational needs has exploded

from 255 million pounds in 2017-18 to 600, 22 million in 2024-25, but there's barely

any proof is delivering real results or high quality support for those.

Kids On top of that, school inspections got wrecked by teacher union actions, no full

checks in post-primary schools from 2018-20, 23, and just 13 primaries.

That leaves gaps in spotting issues like child protection, putting vulnerable students

at risk.

The report also flags a big achievement gap.

Only 53% of free school meals, kids hit 5 good GCEs, including English and math in.

2025, versus 80% of others.

About 1900 pupils got left out of results too, stirring controversy.

Education Minister Paul Given welcomes the wake up call, stressing early tests like

new ones planned for primary in year 10 starting 20.

30 could fix this and boost every child's shot at success.

Reforms are rolling, but tight budgets ahead mean schools got to get smart fast.
