Get time to break this down here in the Irish Breakdown podcast, break to buy your friends over at FanDuel. When we start talking about game records again, I echo the same sentiment that I said at the start of the show overall. This isn't about, you know, if these game records don't play like game records, you know, this could be a bad start to the home series for Notre Dame this season, home slate for Notre Dame this season. Not that, but these are players that moving forward, are they going to give us something to evaluate to become game records potentially in the future? You know, we're going to talk both offensive defense in this segment. And, you know, offensively, this is, you know, we talked a lot in the post game show about

2:09we, you know, we wished we saw this player do this and this player do this and this player do this. And I think against Rice, they have the opportunity to make some noise. This is an interesting one, because we could have gone with game records that we think match up wise are going to go off. And I'm curious what direction you went. I actually'm going in a different direction. I'm going with game records that I want to see step up for not just the present, but the future, like you mentioned. And when I look at it, the first thing that I want to see in this game is my first game record is going to be the right guard, whoever that is. Now it needs to be sub and ab sure, but I don't, as I've said many times, I don't trust Joe Rudolph to make the right personnel decisions. And I could see him kind of doubling down. Like, you know, listening to Marcus, him talk about press God played well. I hope that's just coach speak to protect the player. You don't want to throw a player to the boss. I'm fine with him saying that, but I hope they don't actually believe that and let him get his work in practice while sub and ab sure gets his starts. And then, you know, work him into the game in the second or third quarter if you've got

3:11a big lead. When I look at this offensively, this is a position that needs to get solidified. I'm not getting 2016 vibes. If you remember 2016, they were pretty good on the offensive line at four of the five spots, but that one spot was right guard and it was bad. And it hurt the offense. That won't be the case is your styles press God, even against Wisconsin, wasn't that bad. You know, we're 2016, but you've got to get better play from the right guard position for 60 minutes. And that could slow things down big time. So I want to see the right guard in this game going against a very undersized defensive line, have a strong performance. Whoever that is to kind of make us feel a little bit like, okay, they're going to be okay. You know, and they've had some guard issues over the years. 21, they had some 16. We talked about some guard issues. 21 they had guard issues. So like, you know, 23 or 23, 23 early in the season had some guard issues. You know, especially, I mean, there were games they played well and then games they were

4:12not good at all. I think of the Duke game where, where Rocco and, and Pat Kugin both had really tough games. So I want to make sure that that doesn't happen this year. So the right guard position needs to be a strength for no name in this matchup against Rice. I think the unit needs the group, the position group needs some confidence. And you know, if Sullivan's a guy, he needs the confidence. If they also put styles in the game, he really needs a confidence building game as well. So I'm going number one game record is going to be the right cards. Hopefully it's Sullivan ab sure. And then styles comes in later and gets his chance to kind of get his feet wet with a little less pressure on him. I think that'd be good for him. Yeah, I think that's a great pick to start off game records for this one. For me, I'm going the slot receiver position, kind of similar to how you went right guard. I'm just going to the slot receiver position. I'm not sorting myself into great house or my own Graham. It needs to be one of those two guys. Those two players are way too talented to not have an impact in a game like Rice.

5:14If they're not a part of the game plan and look, I went back, Brian, you and I both dove into the film and it was one of those things where I think Wisconsin was doing some things schematically to try to take away Jane, great house. And I think there were some things in the offense that kind of took away Jane, great house and hampered his production a little bit. And then obviously, Miland Graham had that big call, that big play called back because of that holding penalty. I don't care who it is, but the slot receiver has to be impactful in this game. There's mismatches all over the field that go in Notre Dame's favor. And I think slot receivers going to be one of those spots. If you can't get going against Rice, then I don't know what it is. Even if they try to schematically take you out of the game, I'm not always the biggest fan of forcing an issue, which was one of the interesting things that I saw. Marcus Freeman talked about in his press conference of like, hey, we don't have to force any issue. We're just going to continue taking what the defense gives us. And I think there's some validity to that. But the other piece of that too is, hey, last year he talked about when Jane, great house discovered one on one, Jane, great house is also open.

6:15And so it's living in the balance of that. It's not throwing four birds every single play of every offensive possession because you have a superior athletic advantage. But very similar to what Alabama did against East Carolina, they were clearly forcing the issue with Ryan Coleman Williams. And I hope that they do that the same with just the slot receiver position, whether it's great house, my land, grand above the frasers in the game, because I think that that unlocks the potential of this receiver room. So Notre Dame's not going to be able to go 16 and 0, 15 and 0 and do the things that we believe if Jane, great house is going to be the only one with eight, nine targets a game. Jordan, pays on. Yeah. Yeah. It's funny. You went with the slot. I kind of went in the same direction. I just had a receiver other than Jordan, phase on slots are perfectly fine. I don't care if it's Mike, a Gilbert, I don't care if it's Jane, great house, I don't care if it's my land, grand, my grief, you somebody's got to be targeted. And when I look at this, I understand Mike, Dembrock is not someone who likes to force

7:15receivers into a game plan. I understand that. That's fine. And but there comes a time where like, I'm sorry, you've got to. That's what that's what you do. You know, you've got to force certain guys in the game plan. And this is a perfect game for that. This is a perfect game. I'm sorry. If Jordan, phase on goes out there and catches seven, seven balls for 140 yards, what does that do for your team moving forward? We know Jordan, phase on can ball. But do you have anybody else that you care enough about to target the game? Because I also think part of this is you got to train C J car. One of the throws that I'm going to have in my, my past game breakdown later is that option route that he threw in the red zone to Jordan, phase on. He just locked in on Jordan. He put the ball where needed to go to phase on. That's not where the ball should have gone. That should have been a back shoulder throw to Jaden, great house for a touchdown. And but here's the thing, they put Jordan, phase on in the slot in Jaden, great house outside because they wanted to get the ball to the slot player.

8:16And while two degree, I don't have a problem doing those moving guys around, but when you're only doing that with him to get him the ball, guess what? Teams get a read on that. And Jordan, phase on is a very good player, but he's not Jeremiah Smith where it doesn't matter where it is. And so they force fed, they did force feed the issue to, to end phase on too much. Now I don't think C J car did as much because he was going with this primary read and with one exception, the primary read was open. But that is something that, that say, look guys, you have other players. I don't know if we don't see Jaden, great house, make some plays here in the next couple games. It's just going to come down to, I just don't think Mike Brown and Mike Denbrocker high on Jaden, great house, which is a mistake. So I think to your point, it is going to be interesting to see this week, like what they do. Like one of the things I've heard about Jaden, well, he's not as physical now. Did you watch Myling Graham? You know, people, some in the chat earlier said I watched Myling Graham on all 22 and

9:20he moves different, I agree. But he also gets pushed around and doesn't attack the football. But yet you're going to force that guy into the issue, but then you're going to completely ignore Jaden, great house. I think they need to force that into this game because I think you need to force C J car to start looking for some of those guys more. Have play calls where someone other than Jordan phase on is your number one and two read. Because you got to kind of force the issue, he's got to build that trust with somebody else. We know he's got trust with Jane great Jordan phase on any should, but he's got to have to build that trust with somebody else. And I thought one of the mistakes they made last year was not doing that enough with Malachi fields. And they got to make sure they don't make that same mistake in this game as well. The next player for me as far as game records goes running back key, Dr. Neon. We saw what Nolan James can do, especially as a pass catcher. We saw what a nice Williams can do in both phases. I want them to start getting Keedren young going because again, I echo what I said in the off season. He has a skill set on like anybody else in the running back room.

10:22And I don't want them to get to the point where the only time that he comes in is in a short yard or scenario or to spell one of the top two backs. Thought the running back rotation was pretty solid in the first one, but I don't want to get to a point where it's October 17th and you're on the road and provow. It's November 7th. And Keedren Young has 17 carries to his name going into one of those games. And it's like, all right, Keedren, we just need you to be the bell. Count short yardage today. Get his feet wet. This is the perfect opportunity to do it. Know that doesn't mean I think you're Keedren Young should just be the starter off the rip because they play BYU in a month and a half. But it's more so get him more volume of carries working back into the rotation a little bit more. I wasn't mad that he didn't play more against Wisconsin. It was his first game back in college football since 2024. He was hurt off 25. So I wasn't mad about it. But I want to see him start to get a little bit more load share this week because he gives you that thunder aspect to what guess you could call the lightning aspect that Nolan James and Adonis Williams provide. So Keedren William or Keedren Williams Keedren Young is my my next guy.

He's bleeding at the end of the game. Mark Markis Freeman said in the press conference gesture, he looked like he was in a boxing match. This is a game you gotta get those other guys going. Nolan James does a good job, but but Keedren Young is a different back than those other two

13:37guys. Stylistically, not different on like he's so much better. I think he's their most talented runner, but again, you said he's working back. This is a great game plan. Like, I'm fine running a bunch of mid zone in this game because you can image your bread and butter play, but I would love to see them be more, get some more duo, get some of the counters going, get some of the other runs going because you didn't do those hardly at all. You were mid zone, mid zone, mid zone, mid zone, quick zone, quick zone, mid zone, mid zone, which is basically a quicker, quick zones of quicker version of mid zone. It just hits a little bit quicker and it's not quite as much as a fast wipe, but it's not inside zone or duo. Then they had like one duo and two toss cracks. That was it. I'm someone who's totally fine running the same play over and over if it's working, but they were running the same play over and over and it wasn't working, which is exactly what we saw against Texas San in last year. That I didn't love. I want to see duo get going. I want to see the inside zone slash duo, how it's kind of a hybrid play for them. I want to see some of your A gap runs get going. You're not just going to live off of mid zone all year because you don't have Jeremiah

14:39Love and Jadon Price. Against Wisconsin, who's a big bully team, I understood running more mid zone, but the fact that they didn't counter duo with that at all was puzzling to me. When they did finally run duo, they bounced it for a big play because Wisconsin squeezed and they bounced it outside for a 16 yard game. Yeah, 16 yard game, longest run of the game or no second, no, 13 yard game. Then they had a 16 yard game on toss crack. The two runs where you do something different in mid zone or your longest runs, there's a reason why. Let's see a little bit more of that. That's Kedren Young's wheelhouse. Let him get his feet wet, let him shake off some of that rust you're talking about in this game, something he didn't really get a chance to do last game. I'd like to see that. I definitely would like to see that, Trev. I think that's a really good game breaker type of situation. And I'll be honest with you to tell about game records. I really hope that this game that Notre Dame's offense comes out and does what they need

15:43to do in the first half because I really want to see some Javie on Osborne and Jonas Walton in the second half. Yeah, I really want to see those kids in the second half. Big time. When we were talking about bold predictions, I said that I think that one of the two freshman backs is going to have the longest carry of the season on the ground. And this is a prime opportunity for that to happen. We've seen it before. We saw it in what 2020 with Chris Tyree against Syracuse. I could see that something very similar happening with one of Javie and Osborne and Jonas Walton in this one. So with you completely, I want to see a lot of the 26 class in this game. I really do. Who did you have any other game records on offense, Brian? I mean, there's a lot we could go with, but I think the ones that we discussed are really the primary ones. I kind of the tight ends, but we already talked about them in the matchups article, but I just want to see a receiver other than Faeson get pushed a little bit and show himself off in this game a little bit.

16:44It doesn't mean like if a receiver goes off, it's like, all right, get your ring size is set. Just go ahead and bring that natty trophy up from Bloomington to South Bend, but it's a step. It's a step towards the offensive evolving. I mean, we said in the offseason, it might take a few games, this offense to really get into a rhythm. And I think that's very true. This game is one of those ones where we talked about yesterday, it's a get right game. And it's a get right game. More so for the offense than it is the defense. The defense is pretty good. They already got right. And it's a unique offense. So you dominate this offense. It doesn't mean that it's going to translate to stop Miami or SMU or BYU or team like that. For the offense, it's like, this is a confidence building game. This is a momentum building game. And you're going to need guys to step up and make plays and dominate the game. If you're offensive, I think people are overreacting to, you know, I'm the great players on offense. It's one game. I don't know. Seriously, it's one game. It's pretty decent defense.

17:45But if you can't rip off some big plays and have guys take over against rice, then I'm starting in a little bit concerned. And my, well, we'll talk about the rest when we get to the key to victory. But yes, I just want to see some pass catchers go off in this game a little bit. Let's flip sides and talk about the Notre Dame defense. Now game records on this side, it's a little bit different of a story because they're facing a very, very unique offense. And, you know, on the offensive side for Notre Dame, we had some different game records. We have very similar ones, identical ones on the defensive side of the ball. And I, I loved your pick for the first one. I think that's a fantastic pick. Yeah. Luke Talich is my first game record. And there's, there's two layers to this. Number one is with Breonte Johnson out and likely out for at least a couple weeks. Luke Talich needs to kind of come into this game and show like, hey, we're going to be all right at safety. And you could throw Joe, Joe Brian in here on this part of the, the analysis, right? Is having Luke and Luke and having Joey come into this game and perform well is important.

18:48The other part of this is practically for this game, that field safety position is going to be very important to shutting down rice and two regards. Number one is coming down hill and defending the run and defending the quarterback. And there's a lot of opportunities for Luke Talich come down. He'll do that. The other part is playing over the top on some of the, you know, the post snap switch concepts or the wheel concepts that they're going to do in the past game. You got to be able to peel and wheel, baby, and get on top of those things sometimes. And can Luke do that? You know, that's something that we're going to see. But I think this is a game that Luke Talich has an opportunity to just come down and just, you know, Marcus Rimser, you know, we view Luke Talich as a starting caliber player. Well, I mean, he's not on the level of Breonte and Adon Schuller. That's when he doesn't start. But when you have a deep loaded depth chart like this, you will have guys that like, yeah, he may not start for us, but we view him as a starter, meaning when he's on the field, we expect him to play at the level of the guys that are in front of him.

19:50That's what that's what it means to say a guy is a starting caliber player. No, he's not Breonte and Adon, but we expect when he's on the field, he balls. And that's what Marcus Rimser said about Luke Talich. And now we get to find out if that's just coach speak or if that's like Luke's been playing like that. I think he's been playing a lot. I think he's going to play like that. I think this is a game where Luke's going to come downhill and make a lot of plays, but he's got to make sure he's also disciplined within that as well. Because if you don't do that, then you become a game record for them. Because now that wheel routes uncovered. And, and, you know, or that tight end seam is uncovered, things like that. And I'm also very curious, what does an adon him do with their safety? Do they put a don Schuller in that situation? You know, do they go with a third linebacker and maybe play too high that there's a lot of different things that they could do in this game. Either way, Luke Talich as the field safety is going to play a big role in this defense, shutting down rice. And it would not shock me if Luke has a big game.

20:50Luke was also my first pick for game records on Notre Dame's defense. Agreed with everything that you said, the only thing that I'll add. It's almost like a homecoming for him. These are the types of offenses, similar style, similar overarching goal. I guess you could say that he played against in high school when he was playing in Wyoming. I mean, I think this won't be something that's going to be crazy new to him. I'll be very interested to see what Luke Talich's stat line looks like at the end of the game. Because he could have it absolutely monster performance on Saturday. I'm with you. He was my first one as well, Brian. Yeah, that, um, that's, yeah. That's going to be interesting to see how that goes. Let who's your number two game record, Chef? Number two, I went with the interior defensive line. I'm going with Tion Gray, the guy getting the start over Jason, O'Neill. This was one of the reasons why you brought him in. And after singham and person, he's a little bit lighter on his feet, but he's still a strong hands in what you would assume a six foot six, 330 pound kid, 320 pound kid would have.

21:52I'll be interested to see if that he, if he develops any sort of, you know, pass rush to his, to his arsenal, but having said that, games like this were one of the big reasons why you brought him in. Noted him writes himself as on being a stout rush defense. And the Chris Ash effect last year was on full display watching their run defense turn around. I think Tion Gray is going to absolutely eat in this game. Like you said, rice looks to establish a run game in between the tackles. It's evident when you pop on the film, they're going to have to run into the teeth at Tion Gray. At six foot six, 330, 320 pounds. And I think he's going to have an absolute day. He's going to allow the Notre Dame linebackers to have a strong performance. And there may be some things that Tion does on Saturday that isn't reflective in the stat sheet. But I think when we pop on the film and listening to you guys on a pond further review, what we're going to talk about in the post game show, I think Tion Gray, big old number zero in the middle of that defensive line is going to turn some heads. I think Tion, number one is you're stepping in the shoes of Jason O'Neal, who I thought was playing pretty well prior to him getting hurt on Saturday night, which was very disappointing for Jason. And in you and I talked about this, it's just like he can't catch a break, man. You know, he really can't catch a break. But I thought Jason was playing well prior to going down. And now they're going to need him to, you know, they're going to need Tion to step up and play well. I think the same thing is true for, for Francis Brew as well, Trev. I mean, he had a big first game for Notre Dame. I think you could throw him into this conversation as well. And and Armel as well. I think they like you said the interior defensive tackles. But I thought Armel and Francis were really productive in the game. I thought they had, you know, really impactful games against

25:07at the point of attack. But I want to see Tion and I want to see Armel make more plays on the ball this game. Make more plays like that make more of the impactful plays that we saw, Francis Brew make last week. Now I thought Tion had a rough start to the game, but quickly got into a rhythm and I thought played much better as he, as the game wore on. Now I want to see, okay, you got your feet well a little bit in this offense. Your face is something unique. Go dominate. And also this, I said, this is a big interior deep offensive line. I want to see Tion show like this is why we brought you in. So I think Tion and Armel are my two game records here because I feel like Francis got his now. Let's let some of these other guys kind of get theirs. And I think Tion is where I want to see. But Armel as well, I think is a guy that will be there. And I thought Armel played well in that game. You know, a lot of times, detacles aren't going to make plays in the ball. They're going to make plays that allow other guys to make plays. And we saw that from Armel in the game as well.

26:08And I thought we saw that from Tion in the game as well. But they didn't make the plays in the ball because this is one of a lot of positions. If a guy doesn't make a plan on the ball, you, the fans just assume that they didn't do well. Well, that's not how football works. Sometimes when another guy makes a play, it's because you did your job very well. And I thought that was true a lot for Tion and Armel. Even though Francis is the one that was making the pressures and the, the big plays. But I do want to see Tion and Armel get chance to make plays in the ball. And with the team that's going to just, you know, run down hill with their fullback, that this is the game for that. Because like last week was not a detacles making a ton of plays in the run game. As much as it was, you got to bully the interior of their line and let the linebackers make those plays. And the fact that Wisconsin kept having to go east west, the whole game is because the detacles were doing their job. And then that allowed other guys. But this is a game where rice wants to go downhill, downhill, downhill. And that's going to put the detacles in more situations to make plays in the ball. And so I want to see Tion and Armel make some of those plays in this game.

27:12No, I like that. The third pick for me, I'm moving it back to the line back in court. I'm actually going with Jalen's need. There was a, there was a good part of me that wanted to go with Madden because I think he's due for a breakout, especially after not playing a single snap on defense, which it's kind of surprised me against Wisconsin. But until show and otherwise, I think Brian John Marie is going to roll with the top three guys. And I wasn't willing to put Kingston yet because I just don't know how much he's going to play Marcus Freeman's comments and his press conference were promising that we will see number 27 at some point. But I'm going to go Jalen's need for whatever reason. I just, I have this gut feeling that rice is going to try to like a lot of teams try to do test Notre Dame on the perimeter, which to a degree, I understand it because you are going to be trying to run into the teeth of defense that has Armel Mookam and Tiong Ray and Frances Brew and Drake Bowen and Adon Schule are just kind of right up the alley. So teams will try to test Notre Dame on the perimeter. I think Jalen's need is going to have to play assignment correct football because that's been his biggest knock. It's not athleticism. It's not playmaking ability. It's not his length. It's not a

28:13size. It's always about can you play assignment correct football and with a unique looking offense like rice, I think that Jalen's need is going to have to try to play assignment correct football and be a game record in this one to prevent them from hitting that one big play outside from preventing Jakari Brown to just keep it around the edge and there's just nobody there because they're not disciplined. They're not playing gap sound. So Jalen's need is my my third game record on defense. I love that one. I'm going linebackers well, Trevor, but I'm actually going with Drake Bowen. For this kind of the similar reasons that I'm going with the 2D tackles as potential game records because this is a team that wants to do a lot of damage kind of between the tackles and off tackle and some of the things that they're going to do to get you outside are going to be to try to stretch and create cut back lanes. Well, again, that's right where the middle linebacker's going to flow. So it's kind of like the middle linebacker needs to be really good handling the veer. It's going to be really good taking on these these big fullbacks. And I almost went with

29:16in my matchups, I kind of decided to you know, I decided to kind of add that into the matchups, you know, the Drake Bowen and the linebackers against the fullbacks because I think that's going to be an important game matchup, not just run game wise, but also pass game wise. They're going to try to sneak some backs out of the backfield, some wheels, some seam, some arrow routes and things like that. And I think it's going to once again put Drake Bowen in a great situation. I think also that Drake needs to be a game record for a similar reason. I think I named him a game record last week, which is against this type of unique offense. It's going to be imperative that he's getting everybody where they need to be. That he's getting everybody set up and hey, this is where you are. This is the check. This is the auto. Hey, this is the call. Hey, they're they're overload. You know, like this is our check to that. If they go tight end over the twins, you know, this is our check to that. You know, if if the slots are eligible because they've got a guy off the line, you need to be kind of responsible for making some of those checks and those calls. And I think that puts a lot on him. And especially with, you know, detacles that are still relatively new

So I think those are that's a big part of it to me is your middle linebacker has to be good in this game. And I think that's early on going to be Drake. But now hopefully, Notre Dame is able to build a really big early lead. And they can start Madden for aim on the third quarter behind the starting defensive line and let him get a series or two. I was surprised that Madden didn't play last week. I understand it, I think. You know, because Drake was so important to getting everything set against a really tricky offense. This is the week, I think that you may be try to get mad a little bit more. But part that's going to happen is that Drake's going to wreck, have to wreck the game in the first half to make sure that, you know, Rice doesn't make this a three possessions each half. You know what I mean? Because if this is a three possessions each half, even if Notre Dame scores a touchdown on every one, it's 21 to three, 21 to six. It's still a ball game in the third quarter. You need to, you need to wreck the wreck this offense so that way,

31:21you're getting the ball, you're forcing three and outs, four and outs, five and outs, where they're just not able to milk the clock the whole game and your offense can get five six possessions in the first half. And this sucker can be over or you make a big hit on the quarterback and you get the ball back and maybe you get points yourself. So I think Drake is my final game record because I think he needs to be personally impactful in this game against these fullbacks and also being disciplined when the balls run away from him that he doesn't ever pursue and handles the cutbacks in the misdirections. But then the second part of it is he really needs to make sure that he's got everybody else lined up because against this type of offense with the playmakers they have, gap mistakes can result in big plays. And you don't want to, you just don't want to allow them to do that. You need to eat this thing up. The last thing I'll say about the game records on defense. This is a game that we fully believe that Notre Dame should dominate. I just went and looked at RICE's over under first half points total on Fandall and it's at two and a half. So they're

32:22expecting Notre Dame's defense to put in Yomans work this Saturday, like not expecting a whole lot. Yeah. Now, having said that, the one thing that I've thought about just kind of watching them on film, going back through and watching how exceptional Leonard Moore played against the run against Wisconsin, I would also hesitate playing him much longer than what they absolutely have to. Who's that? Leonard Moore. Yeah. Like you've already lost Breonte Johnson on defense. You lost Jason O'Neill on defense, but not out for the season like Freeman talked about yesterday. But this isn't a game where Leonard Moore has to go out and prove once again how dominant he is against the run. Now injuries are a part of the game. I'm not saying hey, if the ball's coming your way, just kind of hope somebody else makes the play. But Leonard Moore is almost at the top of my list, right alongside C. J. CarPlayer. I do not want to see in the second half. If these game records are, the game records, we hope that they're going to be. I don't think we're going to see many starters in the third and fourth quarter of the season. I'm also very curious if they do go with a four, three look or a four, two, five in the linebacker. What do they do with Christian Gray?

I would honestly have some looks this week where third series I'd get a Mark Zachary at Dallas Golden or even maybe have James Anders and DJ McKinney both on the field.
