What would you do if the government sent someone to kill you?
In this powerful episode, Virginia Prodan shares her extraordinary story of standing up against Romania’s oppressive socialist regime — and the moment an assassin was sent to silence her. Instead of responding with fear, she shared the Gospel. What happened next is nothing short of miraculous.
This is a story about courage, forgiveness, bold faith, and the transforming power of Christ — even in the face of death.

We've made such good contacts with people who love the Lord, are serving hard for the
Lord.
And really, we're excited about today's guest.
That's right.
Yes, that's right.
Absolutely.
Today as our guest on the show, we have Ms. Virginia Prodon.
Welcome to the episode today.
Thank you for having me.
Absolutely.
Ms. Virginia, to say that you have a full plate would be an understatement, amen?
You are an international human rights attorney.
You're a best-selling author.
You're on the President's Council of NRB and you're on the advisory board of American Christian
leaders for Israel.
You got a lot going on.
Thank you.
Yes, I believe that with all this Christian, we have to be involved in any way possible.
Amen.
And this is the wonderful thing about NRB is that you're standing at your booth and then
God brings together these people, you know, across the convention floor, Ms. Virginia and
I were talking the other day.
And your story is so incredible.
That's right.
It's so impactful.
Would you mind sharing a little bit for our listeners and our viewers kind of your background
in your story?
I'm happy to share the story, but before I share the story, I want to make sure that everybody
understands that my story is God's story in my life.
Amen.
And he can build this kind of story in everybody's life.
Yes.
If they put themselves into God's hands, that's all the obedience.
Amen.
I grew up in socialist and communist Romania.
And I remember from a younger age, noticing that my parents were very obedient to the government
or not only obedient, but very fearful to the government.
If the government will say something to them, to give them the rights or something, they
will just agree with the government and together with others.
They were not the exception.
A lot of people will do that.
But also I noticed my parents inside of the home whispering how horrible the government
was and how much more rights will ask for them and everything.
And as a little child, I was thinking, I don't count for the government.
They can do whatever they want.
My parents are not courageous to protect me.
I want to stop just a little bit here before I go on just to ask your audience to ask
for themselves, what do they share with their actions, with their words and with their
deeds to their own children, faith in Christ, Christ in Christ or fear?
Because we are watched, not only by our children, but by everyone, everyone around us.
That sounded very familiar because I grew up in India, socialist country, and that fear
is very real because you have a government around you.
Socialism does not like Christianity.
No, no.
In fact, socialist is what socialist does.
And it's not only in Romania and India, the socialist establishes here.
The first thing the socialist does is replace this God with the government.
Exactly.
Look at what is going on in America, all the welfare and everything so people can depend
on God.
Not only that in Romania, after the government took power, the government took Bibles out
of people's home.
And if you hide it a Bible, the government will say clear, if you still have a Bible and
we come to your house, you will be killed right away because that means that you are not
loyal to the government.
So we don't want rebellious people.
The Christianity, in essence, is freedom, not just freedom to live anywhere you want,
but freedom to be what God has designed us to be, right?
I mean, Christ came, Jesus came to set us free, free from sin, free from domination, free
from just, you know, to live and to live the life God intended as to live.
So socialism definitely goes against Scripture and that's what you experienced in Romania.
You know, help our listeners and viewers are paying attention, even in this episode over
the course of several episodes that we've talked about because, you know, Dr. Shah, you
shared what it's like growing up in India, where it's not a nation founded upon Judeo-Christian
values.
And then Miss Virginia, your story from growing up in Romania as well with this socialist
regime, we are just a few generations.
If God's people don't take this seriously and go out and vote Biblical values, we are
just a few generations away from losing the foundation that our country was based on.
Yes, that is so true.
And I also want to share something with you and audience, just for them to see how God
works.
Yes.
I grew up in this situation where my parents couldn't share the gospel.
I didn't have a Bible, anything, in fact, in order for me because I was surrounded.
I had in my family several lawyers and when we had the family reunion, I was thinking
how in the world I'm going to grow up and be courageous.
And I noticed that our relatives will group around those lawyers and I listened to them.
So to my mind as a young person, I thought, oh, they know the law, they know the truth,
but they are not courageous.
I'm going to go to law school and do that, but God had a better plan than that.
He allowed me to go to law school.
But if you read in my memoir, maybe my assassin, by the way, you can find it at any store.
If you want to support our ministry, you can buy it from our website, vijeniaprodanbooks.com.
It's there and I usually signed it, put a name on it, whatever you want it.
And before I was allowed to take the entrance test, the competition, if you want, test to
be allowed to go to law school, the government, later on I found out, not at that time.
The government looked for three things.
If my parents ever organized a revolt against Communists, if my parents ever reported by
their children to the government that they said something negative about, because we
will ask a school in every situation, and if my parents or Christians, now, I want to
suggest a little bit because I love your audience and I want to ask your audience.
I want them to ask themselves, and not necessarily respond to me, but respond to themselves
and to the Lord.
What do you say that you don't have?
I didn't have Christian parents, and God Almighty made me a Christian in fire.
He is the one, he is the one who make transformation in us that we never, never imagine.
So forget about what you think that you don't have, believe in God's hands, and you will
see miracles, not only in your life, but in a life of others.
You will read in my book, how God changed the lives of others, how God changed Romania
from a socialist country to a democratic country, a tiny little girl, under five, twenty-something
years old, between twenty-three years old and thirty, when I was in Romania, because later
on I was forced to live, and he used me for his glory, and even now he is using me all
over the world.
So put whatever you think that you don't have it in God's hands.
That's right.
Your story is very unique, and I want you to share a little bit about that because there's
a whole lot more in the book, let me get the book, saving my assassin, great book.
You were all, you were going to be killed.

Let's jump in.
Yes, I want to be killed.
Let me share just a little bit in a few words how I accepted Christ in the socialist country.
So here I am thinking I will go to law school, I learned so well in law school, I graduated
in a top percent of my class, because I thought in those books I'm going to find the truth.
I started to practice, you'll find in the book how you practice and you don't choose
the government, choose it for you, and I started to practice maybe around two years or something
like this, and after two years I got so tired I came to my office, I put my briefcase on
my secretaries desk and I said, I don't want to be a lawyer anymore, it was the most painful,
painful day in my life.
She looked at me like, what have you been, what are you dreaming and so forth, she gave
me three files and she said, one client is in your office and she said the name of, I went
inside thinking, what is the truth, what can I find the truth, and as I enter in my office
I recognize the client, I have been working with him for a year or more and anytime he
will come I will be mesmerized and sometimes more than that.
He will have joy in a joyless land, he will have hope in a hopeless land and so forth.
Many times I said, this man is crazy, I have to fix him, but I never had the time.
So I was entering in my office and talking to myself, one is the truth and everything,
I'm face to face to this client, God's way, and I heard myself saying, I wish I had in
my life what you had in your life.
She looked at me and she said, do you go to church and I stared at him, but inside of
me I said, I knew you are crazy, I don't know why I asked you, so he wrote something on
a piece of paper and give it to me and say, would you like to come to our church next Sunday
and I heard my...
And this is in Romania.
In Romania, my office in Romania, with the Romanian client, and I heard myself saying, yes,
the craziest thing from my part, because a dictator declared three months before as a God
and he required us to worship him alone.
You know, that sounds very much like in the Bible, maybe a nezer declaring himself as a
God, as a statue, everyone has to bow to, and that's what socialists, communists, dictatorships
do, they make themselves God.
And people are afraid?
Yes, exactly.
And mesmerized, they feel like, yes, this is our hope, it is full of propaganda, would you
agree with that?
Oh, yes, no question, you said it perfectly, absolutely.
So here I am, I go to church and he is there, my client is there with his family, we go
inside and he told us where to see it, and the pastor came, opened the Bible and read,
Jesus Christ said, I am the way the truth can survive, nobody comes to the Father except
for me.
And in that quiet and listening people and everything, imagine somebody said, what?
Because it wasn't me, finally someone, Jesus Christ said to me, Virginia, I am the truth,
you just look at the wrong places, that they changed my life forever.
And that day I realized that God put on my heart the desire to find the truth, Him and
also to defend Christian and human rights cases.
Because after that I didn't have to look for the clients to defend them for religious rights,
they will come to me.
I didn't know at that time that, you know, I was the only one defending.
But as I started to defend Christian to respond to your question, as I started, I defended
Christians like young to young or three guys that will take a Bible from church to another
to share it for vacation Bible, Bible school, and they will be arrested.
Doctors that will give prescription for their clients, and maybe on the prescription
they will put a Bible verse or will attach a Bible verse with that and everything.
And they will say, we will take your license away or church that ask for permission from
the government to fix the church or to extend the church and the government will keep them
on the waiting list until it will be in this repair and they will take the demolish the
church and take the leg.
Not only gradually, as I started to defend more and more, not only my clients became target.
I became a target.
Anytime I will go outside of my home, there will be two police with guns and they will follow
me.
Why?
Because, first of all, they wanted to intimidate me.
Second, they wanted to show to my neighbors to everybody around.
If you are against the government, you will be in this situation.
But the most important thing, because I want your audience to understand that it's God's
story and God wants to build this.
Amen.
Let me tell you, a young person, in a law school in Romania, we were never, never told
about defending religious rights.
So when my clients came to me in order to take the case, I had to go to the library and
search for that.
I pray in socialist, but also in America, you cannot sue someone if you don't have a law.
And it was very dangerous for me to sue the government and the dictator without a law.
And I went to the library praying and asking the Lord to help me.
He guided me to an area that I had never been.
And when I got there on the table, somebody forgot the books that usually they would be
locked up.
And I heard the Lord saying, make copies.
And on my next case, when I was in front of the judge and the prosecutor, I said, Your
honor, please release my clients today.
We have the Lord that protected them.
He looked at me like, Are you crazy what?
I went to my briefcase and I gave them the law.
They turned red, absolutely red.
And they said, we need to look at those law and by the end of the day, we'll make a decision.
Again, I was surrounded by the military, you know, with guns and everything.
That's all I was able to see.
I go home late in the evening and I listened to Voice of America because that was the only
only way that we knew what is outside of the Berlin Wall.
And I was listening for news.
And I realized I became the news.
Voice of America would say that I was in poor, how I was dressed, what I said, what kind
of law and that the government already gave success in my case.
Later, I was thinking, how is that possible?
You know what, behind me, I had no idea they were representatives from people all over
the world.
Why I am sharing this, God protected me, but also we don't need to know what God is doing.
We need to work by faith.
When I came to the United States of America and I was invited to the White House, President
Ronald Reagan told me that my cases became part of United Nations reports and part of United
States reports.
I didn't know at that time.
That's right.
I knew that the government sent an assassin to kill me.
Wow.
God uses people, you know, he's the one who puts kings in places and he's the one who
takes them down.
That's right.
Yes.
And even somebody like President Reagan heard about you and about your case and what was
happening.
That's the power of God, isn't it?
Absolutely.
Interviewed because the dictators sent an assassin to my office and when he came to my office
because they had microphones and everything, he was exactly when my system was ready to
go home.
So he invited him to my office and she left.
The minute that he found out he heard that she left, he moved his jacket to the gun and
punched it to my face and said, I'm not your client, I'm here to kill you and I have to
tell you, I believe that it was the day that I will die.
My knee was shaken.
My stomach was growing.
I heard in my ear the voice of friends and enemies saying, stop fighting against this
dictator, this powerful, we're going to find you dead.
But in all these noise, I heard the whisper of God, share the gospel.
And I was thinking, that's my last chance to share the gospel.
So I looked at him and I said, I know you have a job because he said, by killing me,
he will become number one in dictators' rank.
And I said, I know you have a job, I know you want that job.
But I have a job too and I would love to share something with you.
Would you like to hear from my surprise, he said yes.
So I started to share the gospel, but I started to share the gospel in a special way.
I will just say, short, it was by reciting God's word.
And as I watched him reciting, sharing the gospel, he put the gun down, his shoulders
relased and to make the story short, he accepted Christ right there.
Amen.
Sounds like the Apostle Paul.
I know.
I know.
It sure does.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
And I shared a little bit on the show about growing up in a country, not only where Christianity
was not the majority religion, but where you encountered religious persecution.
Yeah.
I know that was your and your family story.
Well, Miss Virginia is saying it's very, very true.
The persecution comes, especially in socialist communist countries and it's happening in India.
And there's a major effort to do that here in America too.
Yes.
I mean, if we are not careful, we're going to lose the freedoms we have.
That's socialism is on a march everywhere across the world.
What do you think we can do to prevent that from happening?
But let me tell you one other thing.
I will just mention it that the story doesn't end there.
He came to America to my office in Dallas, Texas because I'm a lawyer.
And he asked me to let him to write a chapter in this book.
Oh wow.
And he wrote a chapter on how social is destroyed his life and became a monster and how God redeemed
his life in my office in Romania.
Today he is a pastor.
Wow.
I love him.
I'm a assassin to a pastor.
I love him.
Exactly.
That's what only God can do.
Amen.
Amen.
So what do you think, you know, what would your message be to the people of America today?
Who think this will never happen in my life?
This is just something I see in movies and I read about in books.
But how can we prevent this from happening in America?
How can we get the people of America to see this issue much more clearly?
First of all, I believe that we as Christian, we have to get rid of fear.
I understand the American people's fear.
I experience that.
No question.
You American people have to understand that they never experience persecution by their
own government.
It's a new journey and fear is a first thing that will attack you.
Even for those who visited a persecuted country, it's different to watch your brothers
sister being persecuted and yourself to be persecuted by your own.
So the first thing is to remember that God did not give us a spirit of fear.
Amen.
And first of all, you know, many times I say, well, where do you go?
You wake up in the morning.
You go to the throne or you go to the phone.
That's right.
Go to the throne and tell God.
I am not always on the top.
I'm in the valley too.
I am praying with tears on my cheek.
I don't know where to go and so.
And I have the experience that I explain and it's even more.
But without fear, we have to go to God.
We live in a society with likes and posts and on website and everything you already have
a value.
That's right.
Many times and I am saying to your audience, as I said to myself and as I said to
my children, adults, adults now, I'm looking in the mirror and I say you are a princess of
the most highest act like one today.
So read the Bible.
I memorized the Bible, the book is telling you how important it was for me to remember
in the interrogation room, they built me in a horrible, horrible way.
And I remember the Lord reminded me to not be terrified by them because I will terrify
you in front of them.
So don't read, only God's promises, read what God likes, what God doesn't like.
Those Bible verses will wake up.
It was like a cold, cold, cold water over me reminded me that I was when they were beating
me and hitting me by the wall, not being able to breathe.
I was unknown to them.
I was in the loving arm of God who whispered to me, I'm here, I'm here for you.
And I was able to tell them, I love you and God loves you and they were crying.
So what I am saying is you do not have enemies.
Even if your boss persecutes you or marginalize you, we don't have, we have a kind of soft
persecution right now, but you have to remember your value in Christ.
Do not be afraid of your boss or even your government because your resources are in God.
I came to United States, empty handed.
I didn't know anyone.
I knew five languages and not one word in English.
I learned English.
I went back to law school, I wrote my book, I go and speak all over the world.
I raised three kids, my daughter graduated from SMU like me, my second daughter from Harvard
Law School and my son from United States Air Force Academy.
This is the best country in the world with God.
You can do, do not, do not be part of the people that want to destroy this country.
And something else when someone is against you, first of all, when they are in need, run
and help them.
That's the best way that when they need help, they will ask you and ask the Lord to help
you to look in such a way.
And I have to say it because I received this many times from people all over the world.
They will say to me, Virginia, teach me how your God to be my God.
Those people that God is alive in your life, and they will say that I want that.
Remember that you are here, wake up in the morning and say, oh, I am here, oh, it is so
hard.
Instead of that, look at God and say, Lord, what do you want me to do today?
You will be amazed what God will do.
Amen.
You can't help but hear a story like that.
And be reminded of God's sovereignty, be reminded that God is in control.
It's so incredible.
It's so refreshing to meet people like you and to hear your story and to be reminded
that the God that we serve, the God that we sing about, is the God that is in control
of the world over.
Dr. Shah, would you leave our listeners and our viewers with some thoughts about God's
sovereignty that will help us see clearly the world around us and the issues that we're
facing?
Absolutely.
I mean, just again, the story of Virginia Prodon is very important for not just Christians
across the world or those facing persecution, but also Christians in America to know that
God is still in control.
God is still in control and He wants us.
His people stand up courageously to speak out, to fight for those who are the weak and
the innocent and to know that ultimately God wins.
That's right.
Share the gospel.
Share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The gospel is the power of God into salvation to everyone who believes.
Amen.
So share the gospel.
Great responsibility.
So this book is great.
Yeah.
