It’s also used in flame retardants, and – this is key – in semiconductors. It’s also has applications in pharmaceuticals.

Antimony is also found in Idaho and Montana. But a majority of antimony production comes from countries that are not particularly friendly to the United States: China, Russia, and Tajikistan, which, between them, account for almost 80 percent of global supply.

Johnson Warns Current Government Shutdown Could Be Longest Ever

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said on Oct. 13 that he thinks the ongoing federal government shutdown might become the longest in the nation’s history, and that he “won’t negotiate” with Democrats until they abandon their health care demands to reopen.
“We’re barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history,” Johnson said.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday that the shutdown had already begun to affect the U.S. economy but did not elaborate.
The Senate GOP needs 60 votes on its continuing resolution, which extended government funding at the existing level before the shutdown, to reopen the government. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has pinned blame on Democrats, who have insisted on a permanent extension to certain COVID-19 era health care subsidies that are expiring this year.

Russia Hammers Ukraine With Glide Bombs, Striking Hospital

Russian forces launched powerful glide bombs and drones against Ukraine´s second-largest city in overnight attacks, hitting a hospital and wounding seven people, an official said Tuesday, as European military aid for Kyiv dropped sharply and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepared to ask U.S. President Donald Trump for Tomahawk missiles.
The Russian attack on Kharkiv in Ukraine´s northeast hit the city’s main hospital, forcing the evacuation of 50 patients, regional head Oleh Syniehubov said. The attack´s main targets were energy facilities, Zelenskyy said, without providing details of what was hit.
“Every day, every night, Russia strikes power plants, power lines, and our (natural) gas facilities,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram
Russian long-range strikes on its neighbor’s power grid are part of a campaign since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022 to disable Ukraine´s power supply, denying civilians heat and running water during the bitter winter.
The Ukrainian leader urged foreign countries to help blunt Russia´s long-range attacks by providing more air defense systems for the country, which is almost the size of Texas and hard to defend from the air in its entirety.

Supreme Court Reviews Voting Rights Challenge

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear a Republican-led challenge to the Voting Rights Act, giving its conservative majority a chance to deal another blow to the landmark federal law enacted 60 years ago to prevent racial discrimination in voting.
The case involves electoral districts in Louisiana.
The arguments come in an appeal by a group of Black voters of a judicial decision declaring that a map that raised the number of Black-majority congressional districts in the state from one to two violated the constitutional promise of equal protection because it was guided too much by racial considerations.
Louisiana, where Black people make up roughly a third of the population, has six U.S. House of Representatives districts.
Black voters tend to support Democrat candidates. Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act bars electoral maps that would result in diluting the clout of minority voters, even absent direct proof of racist intent.
The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, is expected to rule by the end of June. A decision striking down Section 2 could help Republicans gain as many as 19 additional seats in the U.S. House and reduce minority membership in Congress, according to a report by Democratic-affiliated advocacy groups Fair Fight Action and Black Voters Matter Fund. Republicans currently hold a slim majority in the House.
