This is One Bills Live, presented by Collider Health.
It's a very special Monday here on One Bills Live,
Chris Brown, Steve Tasker with you.
And batten down the hatches everybody.
Get your weighted anchor system ready to roll
because stuff is flying all over God's creation here
in Western New York.
My dog was a nervous wreck last night.
She thought the house was coming down
and just kept bugging us the whole night.
The topic for the show today is who's got
the biggest tree fell over.
Okay, I think I win.
You probably do.
I got a white pine in the back of my house
or a side of my house that it was a hundred feet tall.
It was absolutely a hundred feet tall.
Not anymore.
And it's not anymore.
It's laying down and the root pile that came up with it
because it came over to windstorm.
The trunk broke and the root pile came up.
All of one, I don't know, don't ask me.
And so I've got like a nine or 10 foot tall root.
Wow, plate or whatever, you know, the ball came up.
They have shallow roots and trees.
The tree is big around it.
You can't reach around it.
And it's enough.
The thing weighs like nine tons.
I'm gonna have to have a crew come in.
That's gonna chop it up a little bit.
Yeah, it's gonna be a pretty penny.
It's not really urgent.
The last 15 feet or so is on my neighbors.
But it's like 400 feet behind his house.
Yeah, so he doesn't care.
And he's not an imminent threat to anything.
There's no urgency to it.
But letting it lay there and rot is not an option either.
I found a number of articles that did not belong to me
in my front landscaping this morning.
I found a toy that had gotten thrown out in the garbage
like a toy helicopter.
Oh, yeah, there you go.
I'm not joking.
Got caught in the way.
Well, I don't know if they tried to fly it in that thing.
But anyway, you know those green shrub covers
that people drop over the shrubs in the winter.
Inherited one of those and a couple of other items
that I just threw back in the trash.
This is garbage collection day in our neighborhood,
which is not good because cans were just getting blown
over like two picks last night.
And you know, you're sleeping at night and you hear boom.
Yeah, there's another can.
Let's focus that hours.
I had to rake my driveway because of all the sticks.
I had a tree, a dead tree in the front go over
and it fell through and then, and you know how it's brittle.
So it crackled and broke apart.
So all that.
And it fell through another a different white pine
that, you know, yeah, you, it sounds like you need
a forestry service to show up and get some work done.
I need some forest gnomes to come in and fix me up.
It always seems like the windiest days
are garbage day for my neighborhood.
I don't know why this happens.
This is the second time this winter alone
that this has happened.
I told you the other time, I was driving to work
before pickup had happened.
And so cans had blown over, chock full of God knows what.
And I'm telling you, I was like Dorothy
and the Wizard of Oz at the beginning of the movie.
Like stuff is flying by my car, giant swaths of cardboard.
Just, it was bananas.
And I mean, last night wasn't as bad,
but I got a whipping as we go from 60 degrees this morning.
I got up, it's 56.
It's now 34.
Yeah.
And it's going to be minus one with the wind tomorrow.
So I think this qualifies today is big spring two.
Fake spring doose.
Yeah, okay.
We'll see if we have a fake spring three.
I'm hoping we don't.
Well, we probably will.
It's going to get nice.
We're not seeing it.
I'll say this.
I know we're going to get a little bit more snow
because I took the plow off the gator.
I took the ski.
Why would you do that?
Well, I didn't even take the sticks out of my driveway, Mark.
I had stuff I wanted to do.
And I needed the thing.
And I didn't want to drive around with the plow.
And I said, you know what?
Because the next time we get snow,
it's not going to hang.
It's not going to be a three week thing
in a day or two.
So I said, that's it.
I took it off.
Well, I just made the, you know,
I took the cold stand.
I took the cold stand.
If when we get snow, we know who to blame.
No, yes.
I'm anticipating that.
I mean, you've got big shoulders.
You can handle that.
That's what it is.
It's officially March, man,
as we hear in Western New York, Steve.
Eight teams coming to Buffalo.
Let's go.
Eight teams.
I cannot tell you.
In Top Seated, Michigan.
That's amazing.
That's a mech.
Now the game.
Congratulations on your Johnny's.
Yes, back to back, Big E's champs.
They should have got the four seed.
They got job by the committee.
They got a five seed.
I mean, Arkansas went all the way
and won the SEC title,
moved up a place from five to four.
I don't know why St. Johnston
and after they waxed UConn
by 20 in the championship game.
Well, there you go.
It's a quad one win.
Like, help me out.
I have to, I have a confession to make as well.
You know how I, you know how I feel
about other sports other than football.
I haven't watched a single hoop live
of college basketball this year.
Well, that puts you in very good position.
That's not my confession.
To set up the perfect brand.
The confession that I have to make
is one that goes against everything
that I know and believe in.
I did watch a little bit of these
semi-final Dominican Republic USA games tonight.
Two to one.
I did sit down and watch a little bit of baseball lesson.
Yeah.
Aaron Judge with a defensive play of the game.
That throw, he did rope he threw in from right field.
It was pretty nice.
Fernando Tatees tries to go through home runs.
Tries to go first to third on a base hit to right
and Judge scoops up the ball and it is a hose on a fly.
On the fly.
Flying drive throw.
I think he was out by a step and a half.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, he got gunned down and it wasn't closed.
Got tagged on the face of 36 inches from the back.
I have to say the thing that still amazes me most
about major league ball players is how effortless it is
in how far they can throw a baseball.
Now, I've even in little league, I didn't have an arm.
That's why I played second base, you know.
Shortest throw to first, put him there.
I never had an arm.
But I remember as a kid marveling at it,
watching outfielders do, you know,
base long toss, you know, in between innings,
getting warmed up for the next inning.
Defensively, I'll be sitting there going,
he's throwing it across more than half the outfield.
What's it?
How does he, he's just tossing it.
He's not even like Crow hoppin and wind it up.
He's just doing it.
Let me throw at 300 feet.
It's like, I couldn't do that if I hand grenade it.
Right.
And that throw by, now Judge comes in from right field.
He's got a running start, scoops it in one motion,
and raises up and puts the rocket in there.
And it was a great throw.
The thing that got me about that game last night
was the electricity in the stadium.
I have never, not in my entire life, not once.
Have I ever heard a baseball game with so much buzz
going on all the time.
The Dominican Republic was playing, and it's an enormous,
it's a national sport.
Yeah, down there.
It's not even close in Dominican,
and the players, I mean, it's in their blood.
They just sort of were told.
And it's unbelievable the presence that sport has
for the population in Dominican.
And so they all showed up that it was a big Dominican
crowd.
Right.
And it was every single thing that every pitch, every swing,
every foul ball was just a buzz.
I mean, it was just electric.
I've never in my life, not once.
Not in the game, not in game seven of the World Series.
Have I heard a buzz like it was every pitch of that game
last night in Miami?
It was amazing.
It was absolutely amazing.
And that's, I would think it's been decades
since you've had a game that had that kind of electricity
about it.
You know, they put it, they put a pitch count,
they put a pitch clock on baseball
because it was taken forever to play these.
It was an absolute slog to watch a baseball game
for years and years and years.
Now they got a pitch count.
It keeps it moving a little better.
But I have never seen, and I know I've seen Yankee playoff
games and watched him watch the broadcast.
Nothing like that.
Nothing, not a home Yankee game, not a game seven.
Not when Jeter came down from shortstop and through the
backhander to the plate.
Nothing.
No game was ever like the one I saw last night against the
Dominican Republic in the United States.
It's a slow, quiet sport.
And last night, it harkened back to the, you know,
the 40s and the 50s back then.
Well, yeah, it was, it was unbelievable.
And I was alive then, but I can only guess.
Right.
I've never seen a game with that much electricity
in it, not, not a single one.
And it was, it was pretty cool.
I got it met.
Pretty cool.
All right.
You had some dudes playing too.
I mean, it wasn't just, it was an all-star game.
Best of the best.
It was an all-star game.
And every guy was out there full throttle.
Let's go.
It was something else.
It was really something else.
And I think it's, it's well known that the
Dominicans can hit as good as anybody.
Right.
Where the Americans had the edge was in pitching.
Particularly, yeah.
Particularly relief pitching.
That's where the Americans have the edge on the
Dominicans.
So we'll see.
Who are they playing?
Are they playing in Japan in the middle?
Yeah, I don't know.
Are they still playing?
I know that was a semi-finals.
Is there another game?
I think it's Japan in the final.
No, Japan has been a good picture.
Extent of my interest has been revealed.
Is there, are they just internet?
What time is it, when's that game take place?
Yeah.
Oh, Italy, Venezuela winner.
OK.
Oh, Italy, Venezuela.
Yeah.
I mean, there's a beat.
I guess so.
They were playing Venezuela.
I guess they lost.
Wow.
OK.
Venezuela is no joke either.
They love baseball, too.
Yeah.
So yeah, that's how about the Italians?
Well, it's a lot of American guys of Italian descent
playing on the team, that play in the majors.
The managers, full blown Italian.
Does he speak English?
I'm a little bit.
I love that.
I love that.
I absolutely love it.
I want to see him go out to the official and argue
using nothing but his hands.
OK.
Just gesture.
Yeah, well, he may very well do that.
That is such a stereotype.
It is.
Well, I know.
It's not inaccurate.
It'd be great.
I'd love it.
Yeah, so NCAA tournaments coming here,
games start on Thursday, and then the winners of those games
play on Saturday.
And you've got to give the early social media check
mark to North Dakota State Steve.
Oh, let's hear the alma mater of one Phil Hansen.
They tweeted earlier today their own logo,
because they're the North Dakota State bison,
along with the other logos in Buffalo.
The Bill's logo, which is a charging buffalo, as we know,
the Sabers logo, which has a buffalo above two swords,
and the Buffalo bisons, with the simple comments saying,
feels like home.
Pretty clever.
There you go.
Got to embrace it, man.
Oh, North Dakota coming to Buffalo to play hoopy.
North Dakota State bison.
Let's go.
And home team.
They're automatically the home team, right?
Well, I don't know about that, but not for nothing.
Michigan, as we told you, is playing here as well.
And they're playing the winner of the playing game
between UM, I think it's UMKC and UMBC and Howard.
And if Howard wins, we will have two teams in Buffalo
who go by the moniker of the bison for their mascot.
All right.
Well, they're the favorites.
Oh, no, it's not Howard.
I'm mixing them up with Morgan State.
Thank God.
Oh, that's a total play.
I mixed up my HBC use.
That is a total play.
Morgan State is the bison, not Howard.
That's my name.
Please give her being a play by play guy.
Yeah, HBC use, man.
They got, I got crows up on my knees.
What is the, I don't know who's in the turn.
I'm totally oblivious to the hoop thing.
Who has the most unique mascot?
Oh, wow.
Is it like the purple spiders?
Oh, the Long Island University sharks are pretty good.
OK.
That's a good one.
They used to be the blackbirds.
And I can't remember why they changed their mascot.
But they're now the Long Island University sharks.
Sharks.
Not that there are many patrolling the shores around Long Island,
but there you go.
Yeah, look at Long Island sharks.
I'm sure there's something.
I'm sure there's something more outlandish than that.
Oh, the St. Louis University Billikens are playing here.
The way to what?
It's a weird mascot.
It's got, it looks like some kind of, I can't even explain it.
It's like a, it's like a cross between a troll and a gremlin.
And he's got like a crown on.
Look up the St. Louis Billikens.
I don't know if I can do that.
Hold on.
St. Louis Billikens here, me.
Yeah, that's a weird mascot that I've never understood.
Hold on, I got the list and it's, it's, it put up the,
there it is.
Sam, serious.
He's like a pointy, eared elf.
It's like a blue shrek kind of thing.
Yeah, it's, it's a little creepy.
I'm not going to lie.
If you go, if you, if you, there's a lot of them.
The ace, I think for the teams playing here.
Ace purple.
The St. Louis Billikens.
Yeah.
The Ferman team is in the tournament.
There is 16 seat as well.
And Ferman's got an interesting mascot.
They're the Paladins, which is, I think a crusader of sorts.
If I remember right.
Oh my gosh.
So yeah, oh, you can, you can go down a rabbit hole.
There's a little quick.
There's a little quick.
Got the list right in front of me of the entire, the entire list of.
Oh yeah, I was right.
A Paladin is a holy warrior or virtuous knight.
The Ferman Paladins are in the tournament.
And there you go.
But good job by North Dakota State for embracing the Buffalo sports team logos
knowing they're the North Dakota State Bison.
Trying to win over some hometown fans here on their behalf.
Yeah.
Well, there you go.
It's, there's a, a lengthy list if you go down, but wow.
That's, that's a, that is a rabbit hole.
I'm not even going to start.
What's going on?
I mean, this is, uh, lots going on now that, now that free agency,
the fever is cooled down a little bit and the fever is kind of broken.
We can kind of step back, probably into wave three, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Probably wave three of free agency now, right?
And I think within the next, maybe this week, we'll still talk about it because there's
going to be some assigning here and assigning there throughout this.
But I think probably next week, we'll probably start spinning the dial towards, where's
the draft this year?
It's in Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh.
It's been in the dial towards Pittsburgh and they'll start setting up for the draft and
getting ready for that.
Um, it's, yeah, they still some really good players that are going to be signed and they're
all going to be under the radar now, right?
I mean, it's going to be like, there's still some pretty big name players out there.
There are, um, which is a little surprising and presumably you can get the vast majority
of them on a one year contract because they as well as their agents know the big money
has been dried up.
That's right.
So you probably got to take a prove it deal this year.
Hope you have a big year so you can make more money next year.
Um, so with that in mind, let's get to Bill's notes.
The bills reportedly have added another defensive back over the weekend.
After signing defensive back, CJ Gardner Johnson on Friday, the bills have reportedly added
another veteran safety in Geno Stone, the soon to be 27 year old played the last two seasons
with Cincinnati.
Stone has 13 interceptions over the last three seasons like that.
So that's pretty good.
Um, seventh round pick of the Ravens, about seven, well, five years ago and had a big season
is last year in Baltimore had seven picks and parlayed that into a big contract with
the Bengals.
Not a burner.
He's like a 4 6 40 guy, but very heavy player opportunistic has some physicality to him.
I think with some of the players that the bills have signed on the defensive side of the
ball, it's becoming readily apparent to me that Jim Leonard wants guys that can hit
and have a physical presence in their defense.
Yeah, you want to littered was a safety himself.
And it seems to me that as a coach and a guy who played it for a long time, those guys
come out and they they like guys who do who are really good at what they felt as a
coach or as a player like the coach felt like as a player.
The hardest thing for him to do is the thing he looks for in other guys.
You know what I'm saying?
Leonard was not a big physical downhill safety.
He was a cerebral guy.
He was a thinker.
He was a make sure he's a communicator and he was a very headsy anticipatory player.
The hard part for him probably was the big physical and he and they get guys like that.
You know what I mean?
You know, Stone is probably more like Jim Leonard.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Late round pick.
I mean, Jim Leonard was an undrafted rookie that played 10 years than Lee, but you know
Stone is a seventh round pick.
Found his way onto the field on a very good Baltimore defense, played well, got a big
contract, went to Cincinnati, did well there the last two years, but is now a free agent
and looks like the bills are going to be his next destination here.
So some good options now suddenly at a position where they really didn't have anybody.
The room was empty except for Colby ship was by himself and Jordan Hancock and Hancock
was there to that was it.
That was it.
I mean, everybody else was either a free agent or release.
You got to go to elsewhere.
Then you got to go to training camp with like six, at least six or eight right and knowing
safety.
And I think too knowing how varied and multiple Jim Leonard wants to be in deploying his
scheme because people are like, well, you're just saying C.J. Gardner Johnson, why would
you sign Geno Stone?
Well, there could be instances where there are three safeties on the field, right?
Maybe C.J.
Gardner Johnson is up in the slot.
Right.
Yeah, exactly.
And if they can do two things, they play safety slash slot or whatever, safety slash, you
know, boundary corner, that kind of thing.
They got guy, it looks like they're getting guys who are multiple, you know, versatile athletes
and experience too because of, you know, these guys, they're, you know, stones 27, but
he's played a long time.
So I'm, yeah, I like these signings.
I think their defensive secondary has a chance to be much more athletic than it was a year
ago.
Because, you know, this, Tradavius White was out there and Christian Benford was out there,
Benford's, you know, obviously a number one corner, Trey at the end of his career got on
the field because Max Harrison couldn't stay on the field.
But now you got Harrison, if he's, you know, can stay healthy and all these other guys,
and particularly in the secondary, Demar was never really known as an elite athlete.
So they, yeah, they've got every chance to be a really much more athletic bunch in the
secondary than they were a year ago.
Much more athletic.
Yes.
Even with stone who's not really a speed merchant.
So the other bills news, because I think Buffalo is expected to continue exploring free
agency in what amounts to what we think is about the third wave of the market here this
week.
Bills have been linked to veteran receivers like Washington, free agent, Debo Samuel and
Brandon I.
Yook, who remains under contract at this moment with San Francisco.
The 49ers were reportedly ready to release him, but are not in a hurry to do so.
There's no more guaranteed money on his contract.
So speculation is they may wait until the NFL draft and move him in exchange for a draft
pick.
And messy.
Yeah.
I have no interest in playing any more football for San Francisco.
Right.
Basically sat out for $30 million.
Right.
Right.
He is he is washing his hands of the Niners and which leads you to the question of, you
know, do the bills want to be the next team he's done with?
You know, do you want to get on that list?
Well, yeah, is that, yeah, is that an attitude and character question that you would be a
verse to taking on for your locker room?
It's interesting.
I mean, the guy basically forfeited about $30 million this year to not play for San Francisco.
So that is that's that's something that will raise a red flag for other potential
suitors.
Yeah.
And if he's willing to do that, what's he?
Yeah.
If there's anything else he's not going to put up with, what kind of fit will he throw?
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's.
There is a bit of other news that relates to the bills.
This just came down, Darryus Slay, who the bills had claimed off waivers, has announced
his retirement from the NFL.
Now the bills would not relinquish his rights and Slay has made it pretty clear that the
only team he would continue his career with are the Philadelphia Eagles.
But the bills still retained his rights, even though he never reported to the team.
Late last season they put him on the reserve did not report list.
And as I understand it, an NFL player cannot escape a team's rights simply by retiring as
long as they're under contract.
I don't know if the contract has told though if he doesn't report that's that's the
fly in the ointment that I've got to get to the bottom.
No way.
He's not going to report that no that they'll he'll put it in the hands of the team because
that would open up because I think some people are like, Oh, he's just retiring to circumvent
the rights the bills have to him, but the bills wouldn't lose his rights if the contract
doesn't hold.
You can't he can't do that because you can imagine what would happen if say for instance
Josh gets to the end of his rookie deal and retires for a year.
Yeah.
And the contract doesn't and he comes back as a complete free agent.
So yeah, you're not going to that's not possible.
Yeah.
One of our listeners was kind enough to pass along the world baseball classic schedule.
Then is well and Italy tonight winner plays USA in the Champions League.
See I I gave you I gave the impression that I was invested in that I'm not, but thank
you.
Yeah.
Appreciate it.
I'm pretty much very much.
I'm pretty much done with the baseball.
So now we are up against the clock here.
So we are going to take a break, but not before we tell you your topic at hand for the
show today.
How much did the bills first week of free agency move the needle for you and you can throw
in the DJ Moore trade as part of their list of acquisitions to weigh in on.
We know that they had a DJ Moore a number one receiver and then they went heavy defense
with quarterback D. Allford defensive and Bradley Chubb defensive back CJ Gardner Johnson
reports of signing safety Gino stone and then the backup quarterback Kyle Allen back for
his second stint with the bills.
What does the bills first week of work in free agency do for your hopes for the 2026 season?
You let us know at one bills live on the tweet sheet.
I promise we're going to have a phone number at some point in time for you folks to call
in again.
We miss hearing from you, but we'll get that squared away as soon as technically possible.
But in the meantime, hit us up on the tweet sheet at one bills live and we'll get to your
comments next.
We'll take a break and be back with more.
Stay tuned.
All right, back here on one bills live Chris Brown Steve Taster with you on a Monday,
a windy Monday where we are asking you and you can respond at one bills live on Twitter.
How much did the bills first week of free agency move the needle for you?
So you let us know on the tweet sheet and we'll get to those in just a second, going to quickly
whip around the NFL presented by Kalatahel official health care system of Buffalo bills.
Jets swung another trade this morning, Steve.
I heard they have moved quarterback Justin Fields in a deal with Kansas City.
New York receives a 2027 sixth round pick from the chiefs.
The jets have also agreed to pay seven of fields, $10 million salary this season.
So the chiefs get a backup QB for three million on their books.
Fields could open the season as the chief starter.
If Patrick Mahomes is not yet ready to return from a tornado, ACL suffered at the end
of last season.
So we're bouncing this trade around Brownie in the control room.
So Fields, and there's no, and I said this to you, there's no possible way Fields could
play well enough at the start of the season to bench Pat Mahomes, right?
What happens now the chiefs signed Kenneth Walker, Super Bowl MVP from...
Correct.
Seattle Seahawks.
Good running back.
Obviously.
What if they draft Jeremiah Love from a Notre Dame, the running back, get two running
backs, and they just run the ball with Fields until Mahomes is back on the field?
I don't think they're going to do that.
I think Love is in the cards for that team.
I think the chiefs are going to either take an offensive lineman because they're picking
ninth, I think, or 11th or something, they're going to take an offensive lineman or
a cornerback.
That's what they're going to do.
Pick a corner.
Their secondary was completely stripped bare.
Three guys left.
They traded McDuffie, lost Jaylen Watson in free agency.
They lost Brian Cook, their safety, he and McDuffie are their two best defensive backs.
They're all gone.
They even lost Josh Williams, their fourth corner in free agency.
They need a corner.
Desperately.
Desperately.
Well, the guests we're going to have on today, Dalton Wasserman.
He has the chiefs, the way he creates his, at the current moment, because we still got
a month ago for the draft.
They're going to take, he's got the chiefs taking, let's see, what is it?
Yeah, Mansor Delaney.
Oh, yeah.
He's going to get his corners out of LSU.
They could get him there.
So that one is perfectly for them.
They have to get a corner because they don't have anybody.
Nobody left.
They were like the bills at safety a week ago.
Now the bills sign like what three guys now, so yeah.
In case you're wondering, Steve, the Jets QB room now looks like this.
Geno Smith, Brady Cook, and Bailey Zappy, go get him.
I cannot, I cannot get my mind around, Geno Smith going back to the Jets.
He was in the EJ manual draft.
He was the second quarterback off the board after EJ in round two.
I can't get over it.
And now 13 years later, he's back with the Jets.
How about that?
Good friend of mine is the offensive coordinator with the Jets.
Yep.
I haven't spoken to him.
I can't talk.
I can't call him.
What?
I don't know what he's saying.
I don't want to say.
Hey, Frank, congrats on the job.
Oh, listen, he's a great coach.
I love the guy.
Oh, yeah.
He's as smart as they come, and he's, and players love him.
And I, I don't know what to say to him.
It's not, it's not going to be a light lift for him.
I think that's fair enough to say.
From where Geno was, you know, 13 years ago and obviously it went up in smoke with the
Jets.
And one of his own teammates broke his jaw because he was such a...
I can, and Polly.
He was a complete donkey.
So now he's come full circle.
He's experienced a lot and he's been humbled a couple of times.
So I get all that.
He's a completely different guy 13 years later as a lot of us, a lot of people are.
But he, you know, Geno at that point of his career was the exact antithesis of what his
offensive coordinator was as a player.
You know, just the consummate teammate, smart, articulate, wasn't as physically gifted
as Geno, you know, played for a long time in the league, and Geno has as well.
But I think, you know, they both, I think if they, if there is a place where they can
both connect, I'm talking about Frank Reich and Geno Smith.
It's in their, their evolution as a player from the beginning of their career to the end.
And now Frank is a coach coming full circle.
So I'm, it's interesting to me, but man, oh man, I cannot believe the Jets, well, it's
a completely, it's a different world.
I get it.
I kind of, you give me, like, you can believe it.
Like there's nobody else.
Well, like, you couldn't go, you know, make a move for Kyler, Kurt Cousins.
I think this is cousins to me would be a better fit.
Right.
But here's the thing with all the intangible stuff.
The 2027 draft class is supposed to be a banner draft class at a number of positions,
including quarterback.
And right now, the Jets have three first round picks in the 2027 draft, three.
So it's my belief that Darren Musgey, the general manager, has convinced Darren Glenn.
Look, let's run it, let's run this offense with a veteran quarterback this year.
Build up around.
It's what they should prepare for a quarterback draft, a quarterback, prepare for a young
quarterback, 27 draft.
And then we'll get this thing back on the ascent.
So I think this year is very much a punt year.
They'll try to win some games.
I think they'll be hard pressed to get to like six, seven wins.
But they'll give it a go with Gino pick in fifth, sixth, and then they'll have two other
first round picks besides their own.
They can parlay those and move up three or any day, whatever they want.
Right.
So to me, I think that's their plan going forward.
They're kind of punting on 26 in the hopes that they get their franchise quarterback in
27.
Other news around the league, the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Goddard were able to hammer
out a deal over the weekend to hold on to the tight end for a ninth season.
It's reported to be a one year deal worth up to $7 million.
By getting the deal done, the Eagles avoided a dead cap hit of more than 20 million that
would have come when Goddard's contract expired today, Goddard and the team had agreed
to push that void date back multiple times while they worked on the new contract details,
delaying when he would officially become a free agent.
So they got that accomplished and look, I'm already tired of seeing all the talk shows
talking about AJ Brown getting traded and not traded with all you need to know is this.
If they trade him now, it's a $43 million cap hit, the Eagles can't do that.
He's going to get traded post June 1st.
That's what's going to happen.
If he gets moved at all, that's probably how it's going to work out because it's a much
more cap friendly implication by trading him after June 1st.
If they're going to move him, it's going to be a post June 1st designation.
Is that an indictment, I'm talking about AJ Brown, that debacle over there, trade him
not trade him, he's unhappy, he's reading books on the sidelines, week after week after
week, they always did post came interview with him and he had to dodge and manipulate,
you know, and try and get around the hard question of why he wasn't being utilized.
Is that an AJ Brown problem or is that a Jalen Hertz problem?
It's both.
Right.
Because from what I have heard about Jalen Hertz, is he is a very aloof player who really
doesn't engage or interact with any of his teammates really in any way, shape or form.
He might as well be some hermit that came out of hiding and walked into the locker room.
I mean, you see the relationship building that Josh Allen does here in Buffalo.
Jalen Hertz comes as close to being the polar opposite of that from people that I have
spoken with that cover the team in Philadelphia, which may sound surprising to some because
to his credit, he has won in a lot of places.
The college level, he has a Super Bowl title.
He was also benched twice, he's very aloof and not the kind of Jalen likes Jalen.
He got benched for Tua in the national championship game in Alabama.
This went to and Brian Dable called the winning shot and Tua won the game in the second half.
Things like that followed him, but he is not, by all right, aside from what you just said,
he's not a bad guy.
No, he's just a vacant, keeps to himself, doesn't build relationships with teammates, which
is kind of weird for the quarterback position.
It's almost a prerequisite, like you have to do.
And the guys won a world championship, so he had one of the best rosters in football.
But including a defense that was ridiculous.
It's for a sport, and I talk about it all the time, for a sport that commands so much commitment
physically.
I mean, it's going to, it hurts to play, right?
And to command that of its players and then to have a player who's so prominent on your
squad, not acknowledge that for his team, not let them know that he's in it, you know what
I mean?
Yeah.
Man, that's, that's dysfunctional.
It borders on dysfunctional.
I think that's part of the reason you see the problems that cropped up last year for
that Eagles team, which I think by most accounts under achieved last year.
Atlanta free agent wide receiver, Darnell Mooney, is reportedly signing with the New York
Giants on a one year deal worth up to $10 million.
Mooney signed a big free agent deal with the Falcons a couple of seasons ago, but his
production dropped by more than 50% this past season, doing part to an unsettled situation
in a quarterback.
He was released in a cap savings move by the Falcons last week.
And quarterback Tray Lance agreed to resign with the chargers to continue serving as just
in Herbert's backup in L.A.
It's a one year deal worth just under $7 million.
And then from the interesting files, Atlanta free agent offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson
who signed a free agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals last week, following the news of
his signing.
The ex falcon got into a social media battle with Atlanta fans and blasted his former team.
In now since deleted comments, the 31 year old responded to fam criticism with harsh words
about his time in Atlanta, where he typed, quote, good luck with that clown show over
there.
And in a follow up comment, he reportedly wrote, LOL y'all in hell right now have fun being
bleep next year.
Those comments were since deleted.
This is where an agent sees in his social media feed.
One of his clients and goes, Oh, dear God, I got to call this guy.
What is he doing?
You don't want to burn bridges.
That's correct.
But my son who went to college at Georgia has a lot of buddies that are Atlanta born and
raised in our Falcons fans, he said they are crying a river right now based on how the
off season has gone.
Because it meant and look, they have new management, new head coach, a lot of new stuff.
But let's just say Atlanta fans are in bullish on their fortunes for this year.
But hey, in the NFC South, it's still contusually a four horse race for the divotender eight
and eight.
You're going to have a meaningful game, a week 18, you can, yeah, so that's that's the
situation there.
Not the best move by Mr. Wilkinson, but he's not the first and he won't be the last.
Oh boy.
People can't resist.
They can't tap in the thumbs on their phones.
Yeah, you can't, somebody says something that bothers you and you, they can't resist.
They don't know.
You can't, you can't do that.
We do have to take a break here, but we will get to your comments on the tweet sheet where
we are asking you today, how the bills, bills first week of free agency move the needle
for you if at all about the bills 2026 fortunes coming up this fall.
You let us know at one bills live on Twitter and we'll get to your comments when we return.
Stay where you are.
All right.
Back here on one bill's live, Chris Brown, Steve Taser, you're going to dive right into
the tweet sheet where we were asking you today, how did the bills first week of free agency
move the needle for you?
Jim Kelly fan leads us off and says we took some steps in the right direction, but there's
further to go.
NewsTackle seems like a big need still an interior linebacker.
I like what we did with the secondary though, wouldn't mind another wide receiver either.
Yeah, Steve and I were talking about this last week, we thought safety would be addressed
and boom, it was, I'm curious to see if they address noseTackle with a veteran player
with proven production in this kind of a system.
I think DJ Reader is still out there, the noseTackle who played last year in Detroit, it's
31 years old, but the dude is a load and he plays that position well.
I think I've told people that Eric Wood, my broadcast partner on the bills radio network
had to play against him as a young player and said he was a headache.
That guy was a headache, couldn't move him.
Like Steve says, these guys are like tree stumps, you can't dig them out of it.
That's what you need at the tip of the spear on this defense.
Yeah, I would agree wholeheartedly with this tweet, noseTackles a problem, you know they're
going to sign some interior guys and down the, right down the middle of your defense,
it's a noseTackle, the inside linebackers and safeties.
They've addressed the safety issues to a large extent, they may sign another one, I don't
know, but you can see the process coming and they got, they went earlier for the safeties
and they're waiting on the interior linebackers and the noseTackles, maybe they will
draft one and sign one, both of each of those positions, stand up linebacker off the
ball, a Mac or a mic linebacker, and the noseTackle, they're going to have those guys on the
roster, where they're going to come from is the question.
I'm just curious how they line up the guys that they have right now, like does Tarell
Bernard take the mic linebacker position because he played Mike in the 4-3 system or
the 4-2-5 system, or does he play weak inside linebacker where he played in college in
3-4 at Baylor, and then on top of that is Dorian Williams playing the other inside linebacker
position alongside Bernard because your other options right now are Joey and Dreson, and
I'm pretty sure that's it, so I mean you got some future free agents on the roster too,
but that's the long and short of it, so we got an inkling in numbers perspective.
We got an inkling into what might happen going forward as you got these guys changing
their numbers, you know, Rousseau is now 15, not 50, and this is after like, what's this
6th year?
Yes.
So, he's changing it up, which means he may play with his hand off the ground at outside
linebacker because of the number change, you're not allowed to have a teen's number as
a defensive lineman, and he's been playing, you know, outside end on a 4-3, so that gives
you some inkling as they might have some plans for him that are different than what we might
have anticipated when the change was first made, so I don't know, there's a lot of questions
that have to be answered here, and just the signings and the, it hasn't answered any of them
except the fact they're Philadelphia roster, what their plans are for these guys remains
to be seen.
Yeah, because that outside linebacker, you now have Rousseau, Solomon, Bradley Chubb, and
Michael Hoyt, depending on when he's ready to return, and that's a big if, and what he
looks like is a big if also, playing at an explosion type position, you know, like outside
linebacker, so I think they're going to still have to get some reinforcements there,
maybe you get another veteran free agent, and you draft one.
I'd be inclined to take one in round one, because you don't know what Michael Hoyt is
going to be capable of giving you and when.
I think eventually, but is he going to be ready for the start of the regular season?
You don't know, at least now you don't, you're too far out, number one, and the rehabilitation
is long and arduous, number two, so I think there's a lot of question marks there, and more
importantly, you look at the outside linebacker contingent.
Rousseau is not a speed rusher, Bradley Chubb is not a speed rusher, and Javan Solomon
is not a speed rusher.
They're all power rusher, speed to power, that's, that is the game of all three of those
guys.
Hoyt is the only guy with some measure of speed, and even his is not of the elite variety,
and I think you need elite speed off the edge in this defense to have any measure of success
on a consistent basis of rushing the passer, and so I think they have to still add that,
even though the position has bodies now.
Good players, but you need someone with a lead top end, bend the corner speed.
I mean, there's just no two ways about it, those guys don't, and those guys don't fall
off trees.
I mean, they're hard to get, unless you're at the top of the draft, I don't think you're
going to get one that's as elite as you need them to be, unless it's a guy who's already
established.
So they may be forced by the, by their, their past success as a team, they may be forced
to just make do, and, you know, we're all sitting here, another year of a K pass rush
on elite pass rush.
Yeah, but I think those tackle is, is definitely something that needs to be addressed in the form
of a veteran player, and then interior linebacker, if the bills feel good about Williams and
Bernard, maybe they sign a veteran for depth on a one year deal, like maybe bring back
Shaq Thompson, and then maybe you draft a linebacker, and what is said to be a good off-the-ball
linebacker class, so we'll have to see where it goes.
Josh says, for me, the Bradley Chubb, CJ Gardner Johnson signings mixed with the DJ Moore
trade has moved me from the yellow to just into the green.
Still got some work to do, but Buffalo is getting there.
I mean, I think it's safe to say that those three players to a large degree can be considered
close to, if not, front line players, like high end starting caliber players.
You know, maybe Bradley Chubb isn't a double digit sack superstar anymore, but could
he get back to that in a single season?
Yeah, he could get back to that.
I think DJ Moore's production was somewhat compromised by the pecking order in that
passing game with Caleb Williams and Chicago.
And he get back to some of his more prolific numbers, some of which he had under Joe
Brady and Carolina.
I think that's possible.
And then CJ Gardner Johnson has played for five teams in the last five years, but that's
an attitude edge guy that this team sorely needed on defense.
Somebody who's going to actually strike fear and receivers coming across the middle because
he's going to lay him out within the rules, of course, can't hit a defenseless receiver
in the back of the head.
A guy that might intimidate some people and get them thinking twice and maybe allegating
our arming some past.
It'll raise the thermostat of the defense a little bit, you know, get him into the aggressive
angry level of emotion that they had struggled to get to at times.
Yeah, I don't think there's any debate about that.
And you can probably use three or four more of those kinds of players going forward to
add to this roster to really give him some measure of nastiness, particularly on the
defensive side of the ball.
Got to take a break here.
When we come back, co-host of the pro football focus NFL show and college football and NFL
analyst Dalton Wasserman going to join us as some interesting takes on some of the top
free agent moves over the past week and what position groups are still strong in free
agency versus the draft.
Police is one bills live presented by Collider Health.
All right.
Welcome to hour number two here on Monday for Sprouts.
Steve Pasco with you and pleased to welcome in now the co-host of the PFF NFL show pro football
focus college football and NFL analyst Dalton Wasserman joining us as we take a look back
at wave one and wave two of free agency thus far.
And the bills kind of dip their toe in it more and more as the week went on.
Their big move came via trade with DJ Moore.
But scooping up some defensive backs here at the end of last week with reports now that
Geno Stone is close to signing with the bills as well in addition to C.J. Gardner Johnson
and D. Allford.
Why don't you just give us your overview of what Brandon Beanas, what you think Brandon
Beanas done thus far to start refortifying a defense that needs more talent on that side
of the ball.
Yeah, they need more talent.
And I think they're going to continue to add young talent in the draft, but I think
something that Jim Leonard is going to look for in this defense is versatility, right?
When you go back and watch his defenses that he used to call it Wisconsin, he had versatile
players who would get after the football at all times.
I think C.J. Gardner is C.J. Gardner Johnson is a guy who really is embodied that throughout
his whole career.
He can play in the nickel.
He can play back in a deep half.
He can do a lot of different things for you.
Geno Stone is somebody who can play back and allow Gardner Johnson and Cole Bishop to
do all those things in the box and in the nickel.
So I really think Leonard, yes, they still need to get more talented.
I think including at that safety position, but Leonard's really going to value guys who
can play in multiple different roles.
And then you look at D.Alford when he wants to get in a more traditional nickel set.
He's basically just a direct replacement for Terran Johnson.
It's the same role that he played out there in Atlanta for several years.
So he's giving himself a lot of different options to A compete for starting jobs and B.
Just give you those versatile players that can play in multiple different roles.
Yeah.
I mean, what can you extrapolate from what you know about Jim Leonard?
The players that are left on the roster from the from the four three defensive scheme
they ran and the guys that they're signing in free agency.
What can you extrapolate from that?
Is it only about positionless football back there?
Um, a little bit.
I mean, there's certain guys in throughout the entire defense who are still going to be
the mainstays, right?
Greg Russo at Oliver, Terrell Bernard, obviously Christian Benford on the outside.
But what I think you're going to get is just more exotic looks, especially off the
edges when it comes to blitzing and then just different stunts inside that you're talking
about, right?
Again, the versatility is big.
Anybody who can blitz, you're available at all times because he runs a very aggressive
style of defense.
He didn't call the plays in Denver, but I would bet he also had a very heavy hand in influencing
those blitz packages in the way that they use their defensive backs.
You think about somebody like a jacquon Macmillan out there in Denver.
If he can get D offered or somebody else in the spot to play in that versatile type
role where he can cover on any play or blitz on any play, I think it makes a lot of
sense.
He's going to want this team to be athletic up front.
They're going to try to get more athletic on the defensive line so they can move around
more.
And then I just think more hybrid players at all positions, linebackers who can rush
the passers, you know, safety and safety's in corners who can blitz off the edge and
working at different stunts.
It's going to be a lot of different looks here from Leonard.
If it looks like his old Wisconsin defenses, you're going to get no two plays in a row
with the same look.
With that in mind about rushing the passer, Bradley Chubs, the biggest financial investment
in that effort here this off season with the three year daily signed last week.
Chubb, Russo, you know, Javon Solomon, a rotational player as an outside linebacker and then
Michael Hoyt, who we don't really know when he's going to be available coming off the
Achilles tear in October.
I mean, he's going to probably be pushing it right up to the start of the regular season.
All those players are all well and good, but none of them are speed demons off the edge.
How much more speed do you think they need to get at that position?
They can certainly use a little bit more, right?
I mean, they've got some heavy handed power rushers starting with Russo and then that
list of guys like you mentioned, but the good news is if you're looking for more speed
off of the edge, this is a great draft to try and find it, right?
If you want to find one more guy who can rotate in there on passing downs, I think edge defender
is the deepest position unit in this draft class.
So whether they do it in round one or later on, honestly, I think almost every team in
the league should at least look at this edge class and decide whether or not they want
to take a player, whether it be in the first round or in the middle round.
So I definitely think it is something, you know, like in the same role that they had Joey
Bosa playing in last year, that designated pass rusher type of role, that's something
they can look into.
It's, again, it's not something they necessarily have to do in the first round, but this is
such a deep edge class.
I think this guy's into round three and four.
That can be useful in that exact role.
That probably won't be, but if the roster remains static, like from today until the draft,
what do you think about the 26th overall pick?
To me, it would be something to help in the middle of their defense, the linebacker or safety
could make sense.
I mean, you've got the top three safeties that may or may not be on the board.
I've seen Mox where they all go in the top 20.
I've done Mox where they all go in the top 20 when you talk about Caleb Downes won't
be there for sure.
No one themed him in a manual, McNeil Warren from Oregon and Toledo, respectively, both
very hot names.
But I also think depending on how the board falls as well, I think it's a prime trade
down spot for Buffalo as well to get more picks.
If they're going to build this defense with a higher quantity of players, you know, especially
after trading pick number 60 for DJ Moore, you can do that on day two in this draft.
I also think the underrated need is guard.
Are they going to replace David Edwards directly?
Are they going to upgrade on Osiris Torrance on the other side?
So guard is something else that I think could be a sleeper pick for the bills at 26.
But I might be looking to trade down because day two at linebacker and safety, especially
are really, really deep.
Yeah.
And the general consensus is while there are a couple of nose tackles who will probably
merit consideration late round one early round two, a lot of the draft gurus maintain
that the cluster of nose tackles is probably going to come off the board somewhere in round
three.
And the problem is the bills are at the bottom of that round at 91.
Are you anticipating that if there is a run on nose tackles and the cluster is in the
third round, it's probably going to be in the top half, not the bottom half.
So the bills may have to make a move there if they want to be part of the party.
Yeah, probably.
I mean, there's going to be an initial run, three guys that I think about, Caden McDonald
from Ohio State, Kristen Miller from Georgia and Lee Hunter from Texas Tech.
I would expect those guys to go somewhere between probably pick 20 and pick 45.
I think those are the three initial guys you're looking at.
But then you look later on, I think that early third round range early to mid third round
is probably right for somebody like a Dominique Orange from Iowa State, like a Dante Corleone
from Cincinnati, who's a proven just a gap plugger as a run stopper in there.
So you probably would be waiting a little bit.
And there's a lot of different types of players at defensive tackle in this class.
So if they don't do it at 26 or maybe with a trade down, maybe 10, 15 spots and get
in on those first three guys, then yeah, it's probably going to take some waiting to see
what happens in round three.
If the bills take a stand up off the ball linebacker to go down the middle of that defense
and they do it at number 26, who will it be?
I think it's possible that CJ Allen from Georgia could get to that pick.
I think that's the one that you'd be hoping for.
You're going to get sunny styles in Arville, Reese obviously off the board, likely in the
top 10.
And then this is where I wonder if they would trade down or if they would hold serve and
take one there.
Maybe they reach down for a Jacob Rodriguez from Texas tackle.
I think it's more likely now to go in the second round, possibly top 50, but to trade down
and be able to get maybe in the second round of Rodriguez, a Jake Golday from Cincinnati,
even in the third round.
If you're looking at somebody you want to be able to cover with right in space, Anthony
Hill from Texas or Kyle Lewis from Pitt, there's a lot of options, 26 is a weird spot.
If CJ Allen gets to them, I would absolutely take them.
But if not, and depending on the rest of the board falls, again, it's another spot where
I think about maybe if I can trade back 10 or 15 spots and get more picks and get one
of those second round linebackers, I feel really good.
And I realize it's hard to kind of predict what's going to be sitting there for them at
26 with all that's going to go on in front of them.
And yet 18 teams in the league last year that did not have a double digit sack guy on their
roster.
It's going to be after edge rushers early.
But I'm wondering if the edge class is deep enough and the needs for offensive linemen
and corners will be enough to push potential edge rushing talent that the bills might consider
at 26.
Are you expecting the cupboard to be bear by then in terms of proper value?
No, it certainly, it won't be bear because I think there's even some guys that I would
consider a borderline for second round talents.
Like it wouldn't, like it probably top 40 to 45 talents that it wouldn't shock me that
much.
If they went 26, talk about say a Zion Young from Missouri, even an armace and Thomas
from Oklahoma.
Two different types of players depending on what Jim Leonard and company are looking
for.
But no, there is going to be solid value there off the edge at 26 anyway, even if there
is something of an early run, it wouldn't even shock me still, you know, with some of the
age and past injury concerns.
If it was somebody like in a key mezzador from Miami, right?
And I think he's one of the hardest players to gauge if he got to 26 as a guy who can help
you as a pass rusher immediately, I think that'd be a really solid pick for Buffalo.
So as far as edge defenders goes, there is going to be value.
Even if they were to trade back into round two, there's going to be value.
This is, it's just a very, very deep edge class that you're really not going to fall
short on.
Well, does that change what you see now as the free agent market starts to cool off a
little bit?
What are the best guys available on which ones would have an outside shot of stepping in
and helping and contributing to Buffalo right away?
I mean, is this market cools off?
You know, that, you know, these guys are going to start getting a little bit antsy to
sign some place.
What are your thoughts on what's left on the free agent market and whether any of it would
apply to Buffalo?
As far as the edge defender market, I mean, you still talk about what could they bring
Joey Bosa back?
I mean, you look at the bills have this long history of bringing in these mercenary type
guys, right?
Whether it's Joey Bosa, Vaughn Miller in the past to the bigger contract.
Shadevian Clowney, who even at his age in a part time role, can still be very valuable
for you, right?
I think, you know, even, I don't know if they would ever bring back Vaughn Miller, but
he actually had a decent season.
But, you know, guys like Hassan Reddick, right?
I mean, you just, you have so many guys who sign these one year deals as edge rushers because
teams want, you know, guys who can play three to four hundred snaps mostly as pass rushers,
like Bosa did last year and he was good in that role, right?
If you can prevent some of those guys from playing on every down, you know, because usually
the weakness is in the run game, then you could be just fine.
I think Shadevian Clowney might be another name to look at there.
He's going to be somebody.
He's going to sign late.
He's going to sign a one year deal like he's been doing for multiple years, but you get
him in there and you get him four to five hundred snaps in the right role, then he could
be good for you.
And I know in the three round mock, you and your colleague Trevor Sikham had did, you
had Kristen Miller from Georgia in there at pick 26 and then you went with Anthony Hill,
the linebacker from Texas in round three.
Why don't you give us a thumbnail sketch on those guys and why you could see them as
a fit for Buffalo's defensive scheme?
Miller's just a really solid run defender, you know, and he's kind of thought of on the
surface as just this nose guard who plays between the in the A gaps, but with the more
I watched him, I think he can fill a variety of roles, even if Jim Leonard wants to mix
up the fronts and put him inside or over the tackles, I think he can be really good.
He's just a guy.
He's going to go in the top 40.
He's going to make somebody's run defense a lot better.
There's some pass rush potential there.
I wouldn't expect him to be an eight to 10 sat guy, but if you're talking about just
trying to get better between the tackles, especially in run defense, he's your guy.
Absolutely.
I think he's a very a solid potential late first round pick.
And then Anthony Hill, I think a big problem for the bills the last few years has been since
Matt Milano's had his injury issues.
They struggle to cover the middle of the field, that linebacker especially.
He's not the biggest guy he's undersized, but he's a really good athlete that on passing
downs, I think on day two, could be really helpful, right?
The ability to cover in space, the ability to read and diagnose screens.
I think he's very good at tackling in the backfield out in open space.
And then you can blitz him as well too with the speed that he has.
So when you talk about a complimentary guy, maybe not a guy you want playing on every
down right now, but somebody say if Dorian Williams is playing on early downs in the
run game, right?
You bring in Anthony Hill in those obvious passing situations and he's the type of versatile
player to me as a blitzer or a coverage player that Jim Leonard might really like.
Overall, looking around the league, what has grabbed you the most about this free agent
period around the league?
Any teams jump out at your or acquisitions that have stood out to you or trends?
Um, I mean, offense alignment are getting paid.
No question, right?
Even if there's some question marks about him, I mean, Tyler Linderbaum right at the top
getting 27 million a year.
It's a perfect fit in the Raiders offense with Quint go with Clint Cubiak, but you talk
about the amount of money he's making.
I think it's just especially in the interior guys like Isaac Ciamalo, David Edwards,
Elijah Vera Tucker, even though he didn't play it all last year, getting 14 million a
year, the interior, the offensive line, those guys were the big winners.
And to me, around the league, if there was one signing that stuck out that I absolutely
love, Devon Lloyd, the linebacker from the Jaguars going to Carolina at three years and 45
million, this guy was the third highest graded linebacker in the league for us.
And there were not many teams with a bigger linebacker need than Carolina.
I really like the way that they've gone out this year and made some big moves between
him and Jalen Phillips.
That Panther team is going to compete in the NFC South again as long as they can protect
Bryce Young.
And then last one for me here, Dalton, is some teams got stripped bare in free agency.
The chiefs come to mind with their secondary, which got absolutely picked clean through
some of their own doings, trading away McDuffie, but you know, they've lost Jalen Watson,
they lost Brian Cook.
The chiefs are there any other teams that kind of got stripped bare and really have to
do a lot of reloading here after the first week of free agency?
The chiefs secondary sticks out for sure.
The Ravens, the interior offensive line, they didn't replace Lindorbaum.
They got John Simpson, an old friend back to play one guard spot.
But to me, the Ravens have got to find answers at center and at right guard or their interior
offensive line could really struggle this year.
But it's a great mention on the chiefs and I think with two first round picks, you have
to expect that they are going to go secondary with at least one of those picks if not both.
I'd be curious to see if they would go with a Caleb Downs if he was on the board ninth
overall and reset its safety and worry about corner later.
But those are two that stick out to me, especially when you talk about AFC contenders.
The Ravens offensive line is some worth watching and like you mentioned, that chiefs secondary.
Good stuff, man.
Really appreciate it.
Thanks for coming on, Dalton.
Absolutely.
Appreciate you guys as always.
Thank you.
All right.
So that's a PFF college football and NFL analyst, Dalton Losserman, joining us.
He and Trevor Sycamoon is a friend of the show as well.
Doing a three round mock the other day.
Those guys are in the weeds, man.
Oh, what?
They do it all day every day.
Oh, yeah.
It's fun to listen because they're rattling off names and you have to go check on every
name.
But that's why I wanted to ask him because we talk all the time about free agent ads.
Oh, yeah.
There's a bunch of teams that have lost like a handful of front line starting caliber
players and the chiefs are one of those teams and that's why I think they're almost
absolutely going defensive back, whether it's a corner or safety at nine and then they
have the second pick later on.
But man, they got a, they got pick clean on the back end.
That's what happened.
I mean, they nailed a couple of drafts that chiefs did.
That's why their defense has been so good and spags their defensive coordinators,
Spagnolo, Steve Spagnolo has been outstanding as well.
But when they get, you know, they hit it on a draft, those guys draft, they all become
free agents at the same time.
Their contracts are all right there together and over the course of the 18 months, you got
nobody left.
You got to do it again.
That's one of the, it's one of, it's a double edged sword.
You get a quarterback like my homes or Josh or Joe Burrow and these guys and it kind of
gives you some stability on one side of the ball and you try and build it around that guy.
Well, you know, eight years later, guys still playing at a high level, you got to refurbish
again.
Uh-huh, certainly the chiefs have had their share of success doing that, but it's part
of the deal.
I mean, they're, they've got work to do and the Ravens all line.
He's 100% right.
That's right.
Linderbaum out.
They didn't resign Falele, their giant right guard.
They got John Simpson back from the jets, but I mean, he's an average player at best.
So I mean, the Ravens are probably drafting all line early unless they fill those holes
somewhere here in free agency in the not too distant future.
So I just, I find it interesting.
There's so much focus on what teams are adding.
I try to keep an eye on who's losing players like quality talent that has made them a quality
team and Baltimore and Kansas City are two teams that are dealing with that right now.
Yeah.
The, the, the symptom of the way the league is financially and with, with free agency
and how players move and all that, it, it becomes evident that every team may change
its identity and it's, you know, up to a greater degree than they did decades ago.
These teams become different teams year to year.
And they got to, that, I say it a lot, we, we, we talk about it all the time.
These coaches build it, build the offensive scheme and the defensive scheme and their
play calling and their repertoire of, of facets of the game, they build it around the
players they've got.
That's, it's a high level degree of coaching because they got to rebuild it from the
ground up almost every year.
And, and they build it around the guys that can really play and the guys that are available,
the guys they can count on and those guys are vastly different every year.
And that's, you know, we're seeing this now.
These teams, like, the chiefs are going to be completely different group in the back
into their defense, which means they're going to have to play different schemes, make
different calls and not going to be able to do some of the things they did last year or
years past.
And it may be better or it may be worse.
The league announced the performance based pay winners in the league player wise, they
put out their top 25 list of performance, pay, pay distribution players.
And one bills player did make the list.
This is performance based pay that exceeds the value of the rookie contract they signed.
And checking in at number 17 on the list was Osiris Torrance, who with all of his starts
and snaps and playing time got almost $1.1 million more added to his contract in performance
based pay.
Where'd it go, Sybow?
Good for him, man, that's getting on the field means something.
I kind of like this program, you know, you got young players that are winning starting jobs
in their honor, rookie contract.
It's a nice way to kind of supplement the income for them.
For me, it seems like too that Christian Benford would have been on that list in years past,
right?
Seventh round draft.
Yeah, six round pick.
Yeah, I believe he was.
I believe he was a few years back.
The player who led the league in performance based pay was Bears Corner, Nishan Wright,
who netted $1.44 million in performance based pay.
But Osiris Torrance, not far behind, a little over almost $1.1 million, so good for him.
That is a nice extra bonus check, huh?
That's like, how about that?
Waiting on tables or something, doing something regular job and then getting $1.1 million
for doing a nice job.
It's better than a pad on the back that you can tell you that.
Right, like, you know what, hey, you know what, you played well, how about a little something,
we got a little something for you.
Here you go.
It's like, what is it?
It's $1.1 million.
What?
Yeah.
That is awesome.
I love that program.
I think it's an absolutely fair and equitable thing to do for these young guys who come in
and I don't know what you call it, slip through the cracks or they land in just the perfect
spot where they can thrive.
And they get rewarded for it and for working hard and doing the right thing.
That's, I love that.
NFL players received more than $542 million in performance base pay for the 2025 season.
And that's collectively bargained like they've all set up and it compensates all players
based on their playing time and salary level.
That's not nothing.
So good for them.
Yeah.
We got a step aside.
Take a break here.
When we come back, more of your thoughts on the tweet sheet as we are asking you, what
did the first week of what the bills did in free agency?
How much did that move the needle for you as far as their 2026 prospects this fall?
You tell us, add one bills live on the tweet sheet and we're back to more of your comments
next here on OneBills Live.
All right, back here on OneBills Live, Chris Brown, Steve Tasvey with you.
Friend of the show, Mike Jeninia, an interesting tweet here, Steve.
This is eye opening.
The five largest Miami Dolphins cap figures right now belong to players no longer on
the roster.
The countdown from number five to one, Steve, Minka Fitzpatrick at 12.9 million traded to
the Jets.
Jalen Ramsey, 20.8 million traded last year to the Steelers, Tyree Kill, 28.2 million
free agent.
Free agent, but has dead money out the wazoo on the Miami books.
Bradley Chubb signed by the bills, 31.2 million on the Dolphins books.
And of course, at number one, your friend and hours to a tongue of ILO at $56.2 million.
How much dead cap space is that?
You do the wrong toe.
How much dead cap it is?
Yeah.
Well, let's see.
Plus 28.
So that's 115, plus another 32, 147, 147 million in dead so just shy of now that number
drops to 55.4 after June 1st, because some of those guys were post June 1st designations
like two of, for example, but man alive, they're the new Saints who finally got out of cap
jail after a 12 year soldier.
I mean, Moses walked through the desert longer than the Saints were in cap jail.
I mean, my God.
Yeah, but the Saints being in cap jail was, that was a, was a perpetual thing.
It was a business, it was a business model for them.
They did it on purpose, you know, you got after that long, that's what it was.
I mean, they didn't sign anybody without tacking on four void years, like one year deals
had four void years on them, which is the most you can put, you know, you can only spread
out a bonus five years max, but my gosh, they finally got out from under that this year,
which is why they were handing big money to people like David Edwards.
That was wild.
Like right back in, the dolphins, the new Saints, terms of dead cap, good Lord.
Yeah, that's, the dolphins could not have misplayed the draft they took to a inn more.
Um, the, it was alleged that they wanted Brian, Brian Flores wanted Herbert.
They want, yes, absolutely.
They couldn't get him because Flores was too good a coach and they couldn't tank well
enough to get, well, no, Herbert was still on the board.
Oh, what's he?
They passed and went with two of that's, yeah.
If I remember right, Herbert was the seventh pick and two of was the fifth pick.
That's crazy.
So yeah.
And then they handed big money to aging veterans who were not going to be on the roster
long.
They handed gigantic money to Jalen Ramsey as a 30 year old corner.
He played eight games and got traded.
And then Bradley Chubb got gigantic money after they traded for him, like $121 million
dollar contract.
And while he had production, he had an 11 sack season is, I think his first year in a,
Dolphan's uniform, um, long range.
It didn't pan out.
Obviously the season ending injury was a big part of that.
Um, and there were other contracts.
I mean, they kept handed more and more money to Tyrick.
So and then they signed Jalen Waddle to, Jalen Waddle's the guy you extend, the 24 year old
phenom that's got, you know, five years in front of him of quality production.
You know, you don't hand the money to a 30 year old corner whose best days are behind
him.
They're not playing more safety than cornering right in Pittsburgh.
So it was ill-fated from the jump and they're paying the price quite literally right now.
Gotta get back to the tweet sheet comments though.
How did the bills first week of free agency move the needle for you?
And you can chime in at one bill's live for your own comments.
But Dean says, I like most of the signings, but what is the work on our wide receivers
like Cook's Davis Palmer?
I would also see if Bosa wants another one year deal as strictly a pass rusher.
I don't know if Bosa's a fit.
You got four power pass rushers right now or three power pass rushers on the roster right
now.
One quote unquote speed rusher and Michael Hoyt was coming off and Achilles.
To me, Bosa's long enough to play outside linebacker, but he lacks a suddenness that
you have to have out there.
To me, I think Bradley Chubb has replaced Joey Bosa and the role that he had played previously
albeit in a different system.
Yes, for the yes, for it depends on the money.
If Bosa wants to play at all costs and not take big money or if he just, for the right
price, you're sure bringing back.
But he's a 280 pound player.
He's probably a defensive end at a five technique than he is as a outside linebacker in the
state.
Like I said, under the right circumstances, of course, he's a good enough player that
you'd want on your team.
And in the right circumstances, he could help you enough to be a part of it.
But you're not going to pay him anywhere near the money, pay him last year on a one year
deal.
Yeah, that's it.
I mean, for the right price, yeah, sure, but not for the money you paid him last year.
Connor on the tweet sheet says, I think it's great.
It's easy to see that they're signing great locker room and culture guys with the signing
of C.J. Gardner Johnson.
It shows a shift from the coaching staff.
This is not a player that we would usually see signs in the past.
He brings an edge to the defense that we need.
He does bring an edge.
I mean, all you got to do is watch him in the run front.
And you see him early and you feel his physical presence.
That guy is looking to knock people's teeth out in the run front.
I equated a little bit some of the people who are as old as me to Leonard Smith come into
the bills back in the day.
He got thrown out and got tossed out of a game.
That kind of a car well gardener kind of a guy, a little bit like Darryl Talley kind
of a guy.
You need guys who are, as we call it, the point of the spear.
If there's a fight, they're either in the middle of it or they're trying to get there.
It elevates the emotional temperature of your team and it's a good thing in a lot of cases.
So there's one edge guy, let's see if they add some more going forward.
Lauren on the tweet sheet says, I like the defensive signings.
Still too many holes, one or two nose tackles, pass rush, linebacker.
I expect the bills to draft for need in round one like they always do.
I got to say with the conversation we had with Dalton Wasserman from PFF, I was encouraged
that he thinks there will still be not just depth, but depth of appropriate value.
At edge rusher when the bills are on the clock at 26 and I, I am, if there is a speed
rusher there that fits the value, I think they have to go in that direction and I, I said
it at the combine, I love our Mason Thomas, he is a speed rusher.
He fills the bill there and he could go anywhere from 20 to 35.
So you're right in the sweet spot there at 26 potentially.
The problem is, and we get this a lot as well because we've seen it in the past where
somebody will offer the bills a pick to move out of the top of the second and get this
and so the other team can pick a guy and get a fifth year contract on him.
Like they did with Cannes, trade just out of the first round.
But to me, at this current point, I think the bills would take the guy, they need the
guy.
Well juice off the edge, I mean you see it immediately watching his film, I mean his
burst and get off is there and even if you just want to make him as a rookie, a situational
rusher, I mean this guy gets sacks just by winning on pure speed, but he also gets sacks
on second effort.
He is a good run defender, he's 250, it's not perfect, he plays hurt, leadership potential,
I just like a lot of things about him.
Not to mention the fact that as an Oklahoma product, he would train in the off season with
Nick Benito, who's an Oklahoma, who's an OU alum and is, you know, the 14 sack guy from
the Denver Broncos, he's trained with him and worked with him.
So give me that guy, oh, and oh by the way, he was also a team captain.
So he ain't going to be there at 26.
That's the problem.
Well I think he might be.
He's not going to be there.
I think he might be.
No, he's not going to be there.
Just trust me.
Why are you raining on my parade again?
Your parade is very nice, but you're raining on it.
Yes.
It's cloud in March.
It's cloud.
It's a little unnecessary.
You want to do it a couple of weeks before the draft, that's fine, but don't be there
bro.
Don't bury me now.
He's not going to be there.
Come on.
I like him too.
Field yade said he could go anywhere from 20 to 35 when we had him on at the combo.
He'll go at 16.
Oh God, you're just burying a knife in my heart.
Guys like that don't last.
They got too much production and they've got all those intangible things that elevate
the guys around them.
Those guys don't last.
We have no shot at that guy.
Lauren wants two nose tackles and I can't blame her because right now I don't see a true
nose tackle on the roster.
Now, I'm also curious as to whether or not Jim Leonard even wants a quote unquote
two down nose, two down nose doesn't even want that.
I mean, DJ Jones in Denver was probably the closest thing to that in Vance Joseph scheme.
And he goes, you know, 325, 330 and they had another big guy.
I want to say it might have been Malcolm Roach, but I don't know if he's a true nose
in the in the strictest sense of the word.
So I kind of pause on that, but I want to, I'm going to pull up the Denver death chart
really quick because I want to see person L wise who they had in addition to, I mean,
we know Zach Allen's there, but he's more of the penetrating defensive end slash defensive
tackle type who made the proble for them, obviously, along with Nick Benito.
But defensively, they had Wazarek, but oh, Malcolm Roach was the other nose tackle.
Okay.
So Roach, DJ Jones were the two primary nose tackles for them.
They're not available.
They're all still under contract.
Roach was a menace in the bill's playoff game.
He was a problem.
And DJ Jones is more of a guy that stands in there and grinds.
Do they want kind of the more modern day nose who can give you a little bit more than
just standing in there and grinding with two offensive linemen where he can, if he
doesn't get pocket pressure, he at least gets pocket push to collapse the pocket, make
it smaller.
So the quarterback can't step up.
There's only so much you can do down there and you got to have a certain type of guy.
And yeah, you can start to play around with it in situational football, but soon or later
you're going to line up on first and 10.
You got to have a stop and you need a guy in there.
Yeah, Malcolm Roach was only 6,2,290, DJ Jones, 6,3,3,5, I mean, they weren't these 330 pound
behemoths.
So I wonder if he's even looking for a giant human being.
Well, you can always reduce the front, too, so you can bring one of the defensive ends in
a fourth, in a three, four, you can bring one of the defensive ends down on the gut full
up on the guard so you can condense your defensive front and alleviate the, yeah, the tripe
team.
I mean, a lot of guys don't play the straight up on the head zero technique anyway, right?
So yeah, so all of that's on the, you know, on the table, but yeah, that's, you'd like
to have Jim Leonard sit back and say, well, we can do everything we want because if we
want to do this, we'll do this and we don't, the question is, are they going to be able
to or they're going to have to say, well, we can't do this defensively because we don't
have that guy.
That's the problem.
Yeah.
But knowing how much they don't, knowing how much of a premium though that he puts on
position flex and versatility so the scheme can be multiple, it has me thinking that he's
looking more for a guy that can stand in there and play nose, but offers something more
than just a guy in there grind and with two offensive lineman and just occupying two
people every snap if based on what we saw from Denver's defense the last couple of years,
the guys that play their quote unquote nose tackle position, they're not three hundred
thirty pound guys, they're three hundred five, three hundred pound guys that are relatively
athletic or more athletic than your traditional nose.
So what does that mean they're going to look for here, we'll have to wait and see, but
if history is any indication in Denver, they might be fine getting a three hundred five
pound guy in the draft and saying, yeah, you're going to be part of our nose tackle rotation,
you won't be there all the time, but you're going to be there some of the time.
I wonder.
Yeah, and it would be interesting to to know what conversations Jim Leonard and his staff
have had about the guys that are on the roster like Dion Walker, what is their plan for him?
TJ Sanders, what's their plan for him?
What do they see in those guys?
How do they feel about those guys?
That would, you know, that may take a little bit of the urgency out of that spot.
That's, and that's, that's the decision.
I mean, they know what the decision is.
We're still waiting to see what that looks like.
We'll have to see when they, when they put helmets on and go out there.
We'll see what they really think.
Or based on the caliber of player they draft or sign in free agency from this point forward.
Gotta take a break here.
Some final thoughts on the tweet sheet when we return here on One Bill's Live,
presented by Collider Health.
All right, some final thoughts on the tweet sheet here as we have been asking you today.
Now to the Bill's first week of free agency move the needle for you.
And we are up to Andrew on the tweet sheet who said we went from empty to a quarter tank.
We got some big names, no question, but they can, but can they do it on this team?
Time will tell.
I like us to bring in one more big piece in free agency, DJ Reader being that piece,
then fill the gaps with the draft.
To get to full, we need to see how they perform.
So Andrew is withholding his expectations until he sees it on the field.
The proof is in the pudding for Andrew.
Andrew is not into the business of predicting the future.
Apparently or in wild.
We're evaluating the past.
Yeah.
Taco on the tweet sheet says, considering their cap limitations, it's fine.
Only time will tell.
Wow, that's that's the phrase of the day here on the tweet sheet.
Time will tell.
Well, they and there's totally 100% correct.
Probably the most astute taco I've come across.
Very nice.
Neil on the tweet sheet says, I think the signing of Chubb was great.
Him and Hoyt, rushing on the edge, could be dangerous.
Still, some concerns about safety.
But like Brownie said, the market is depressed, so we can get good talent,
either in the draft or later in free agency.
Yeah.
And I think we're going to see that in the not too distant future here.
The reports are they're going to sign Geno Stone,
who's been in accomplished safety, 13 picks the last three seasons.
And it'll probably be a one year deal and it'll be for reasonable money.
CJ Gardner Johnson, one year deal, max of six million dollars.
That's a steal.
I think their secondary is going to be very much improved this year.
I'm just going to say that right now.
Put it on the whiteboard.
I think it's going to be very much improved this season.
And that's because you got savvy and veteran players.
That's what Terry Johnson leave.
That's hard to do.
I think they're going to be much improved.
I think Max Harrison will be much better.
Christian Benford,
Cole Bishop will be another, this is his third year,
which is that kind of blooming kind of year for our guys.
We start from last season.
I just think they're going to be much, much better this season.
A past rush will make them look even more outstanding.
Well, that would, that would, yes.
I'm, I'm not even getting into the past rush until I see
how good Mike Hoyt's going to come off his injury
and all these other guys.
All the more reason to get some more reinforcements.
I am going to bang that drum until the cows come home.
Neil on the tweet sheet, oh, he already talked.
He already said he'd like the signing of Chubb.
I think a lot of people just by virtue of him playing in the division
are familiar with his game.
So it's easy for them to kind of
get behind that signing.
You know, and I know his numbers have been good over the years
for the most part.
And now he'll be another year removed from the injury,
which I think is an encouraging thing as well.
Bill on the tweet sheet says, I will give them an A.
Like always, it started out slow and then Brandon
being made some moves.
I like the DB signings and also keeping the govern
and redoing Nox's contract.
They need to add it linebacker.
Milano and Shaq, question mark.
Why a teller DJ reader would be good,
depending on how much space they have left.
It's the first time they met somebody mentioned McGovern.
I mean, getting him back is no small potatoes.
No, it's not.
It's going to give them some,
it gives them a wide margin of error up front.
And keeping Nox bet in the fold when it was thought he could be a cap champion.
I think we all want to run it back offensively,
but defensively is where the whole conversation centers is going to continue to.
More discussion on this as the free agency week two continues.
We'll see you tomorrow in one.
