Freight Rail does more than move goods. It drives America's economy. Every dollar invested
generates another $2.50 in economic activity, spurring growth from farms to factories.
And here's the best part. Freight Railroads fund their own infrastructure, saving taxpayers'
billions while powering the economy forward, from reducing highway congestion to delivering
goods safely and efficiently. Freight Rail keeps America moving.

Week two of spring practice, almost in the books. The buck guy is still going to work on Saturday.
We're going to break down what week two taught us here today at Letterman Row.
That's Mick Walker on the other side of your screen. I am a hobbled
Spencer Oldbrook who's pushing through some things. Earlier in the week,
planned on recording a lot of video this week. Had an eye infection. Nobody needed to see that.
Late in the week now, got a bit of a stuff he knows, working with some congestion.
So if they sound a little different, I'm sorry, but we're going to push through.
As the book is pushing through the second week of spring ball, Mick, let's talk.
What'd you learn? Biggest piece of intel info, whatever you saw might have been pro day,
might have been on the team. What'd you learn?
I'd like the seat in the cabinet of the James Smith fan club after listening to
talk on Thursday afternoon or Thursday morning whenever that landed.
James Smith, I don't know what anybody really expected, but I know you said it.
We all got launched afterwards, so we talked about it plenty, but I think we were all kind of
in green, so whatever we expected from James Smith, he blew out all expectations for that.
Just the way he handled the media, the hand of the press conference. The openness he spoke,
not only about his transition to Ohio State, but why he wanted to be here, what he's done since
he's been here. It was a very impressive thing to do, and this is now pairing him with a guy
Patrick Houston, who also has a ton of personality on that defensive line, so I'm
fascinated to see what those guys do on the field as well.
The thing about the James Smith interview that was pretty eye opening is like,
when Seth McLaughlin and Caleb Downs came over from Alabama a couple of years ago,
we asked them like, hey, to championship level programs, what's the difference here?
If I remember correctly, like both of them were like, oh, it's pretty similar actually,
like both programs do a really good job. For Seth, he needed to change his scenery.
As far as Caleb, it was like, yeah, I went there for Coach Sabin, once Coach Sabin
retired, I felt like a time for me to kind of re-recruited and see what my options were.
No, I think my takeaway actually is that there's a program that's fallen out of the top
tier of College Football, because not only from things that we hear from outside and from
the national side of things, but also like from James Smith, he's now lived in both, like
Ohio State's intensity is different. He talked about how Ohio State is much quicker
and everything is more faster-paced compared to what he did at Alabama where everything was a
little slower. It just seems like Ohio State has fully pulled ahead of Alabama in the tier rankings
of the of the College Football Landscape, but I think that is worth noting here.
Now, as for all the people with James Smith, we're already very excited to see what he can do,
and the buzz coming out is immense. It's pretty loud, so it's exciting to hear from James Smith,
it's exciting to hear from people talking about James Smith. I think the book guys believe that
that he can be really, really good. He certainly believes he can be very good. Not a guy that's lacking
for confidence at all, so if you're in Ohio State fan wondering like how the heck are we supposed
to replace Kate and McDonald into a smaller extent, Taiwan, Malone, who I think is working his way
up draft boards a little bit earlier in the day three. James Smith is a pretty good option to have
there, and then I've also heard good things about John Walker, so this week compared to not a lot
of buzz in that initial week, so I think this defensive lines in good hands, but of course that
starts with the new guy James Smith. The other thing I think that I caught my about the defensive line,
and you broke this news on what Tuesday I believe. Ohio State has added, and I don't want to make
a big deal of adding a person like this to the program because there's about two or three of these
positions, like positions for each position group, but Ohio State added former NFL like assistant
past rush group guru, I believe he's kind of been described by Nick Sabin, Joe Kim to the coaching
staff, and again, I don't know what actual tangible impact he'll have on the season when it comes
around, but you can attest to it, I can attest to it after watching two practices this week. He's
out there with these guys, him and Larry Johnson, Miguel Patrick, the defensive line coaches,
they're probably an extra 30 minutes of reps on the on the practice field going through different
techniques, hand fighting, different things like that placement. It's pretty impressive to see,
and like it's a group of young defensive line that is still need to kind of prove themselves to
the Ohio State fan base, and it seems like they fully embrace the idea of just continuing to get
better, which is interesting to see and should be a welcome site for Buck, I fans.
Yeah, you'll realize where I'm going with this at the end. My cousins have a toddler,
and I saw her last weekend, and multiple times when I would go up to her and say something,
she would just go, hi, yeah! And so they taught her how to do like a little karate chop, and I
wonder what Joe Kim would think of that karate move that she's got, because he's not a karate
instructor, but he's trained over 250 black belts in Taekwondo. I don't know if the hi-ya
little chop is a Taekwondo or a karate move, but Joe Kim is the number one guy on my list of people
I'm not going to mess with in the building now, with respect to all the other Ohio State assistant
coaches, including up to and including Carlos Lockwood, who I won on my side in a fight against like
Godzilla. I don't think that I'll mess with Joe Kim anytime soon. He is a bad looking dude,
and he knows how to train people to beat you or you know what. So I think that's interesting.
Larry Johnson has always talked a little bit through the years, and kind of kept it under wraps,
but the guys who come through Larry Johnson's system talk about the toolbox and hand placement,
and the hand drills that Ohio State does where it looks like they're just constantly
hebachi-hansing a bag in pregame warm-ups. Now you add in a guy who's trained hand-to-hand combat,
Joe Kim with Taekwondo. You match those two philosophies of how things are supposed to get done
on the defensive line. I think you're looking at a very, very, very promising future here,
because you'll have a state defensive line. Hey, look, if Joe Kim's only here for a year,
that's a year that all these guys get to soak up that information that he knows. If Larry Johnson
and Joe Kim were both only here for another year, because like Larry at any point could just say,
hey, I think I'm done. That is still good for Ohio State. So you know, they've already got the
Galpatrick in that room. Now you add Joe Kim into the mix. You've already got Larry Johnson.
I think that is this, this staff is in a very, very strong spot right now. New Ohio State defensive
line. That's good news for Jason Mitty. That's good news for John Walker, as they learn the ropes
of Ohio State. That's great news for Andrew Kustin, for Kenyatta Jackson, Koi Rusal, Zon Grady,
all right on down the line as our friend Tim May would say. I think the future of this defensive
line, and that's why number one takeaway from the second week of spring is like, you're saying
a defensive line that that is going to be good. And if you have any questions about that,
I think that you can start to alleviate them. We still want to see it in a game. But I think
you can start to alleviate some of those concerns. And we haven't even mentioned a guy like Zion
Great. There's names on this defensive line. Carrey Wilder, like younger guys, we have not even
mentioned yet, but Epi as well that could become factors for our Ohio State. And the other thing
that I've we talked about is one of the first things we saw when they were coming off the practice
we got on Thursday or standing there as a four of us and the whole beat kind of talking in
on comes the Ohio State wide receiver room with Jeremiah Smith Brandon and Stephanie Q and all
these guys walking over. But on the right side of it was Chris Henry Jr. What you missed one.
Your eye I'm getting to it on the right side of the group was Chris Henry Jr. J. Quit
jerk waiting Gailford and Brock Boyd all coming down the group together. And Spencer is
stutely pointed out that we have not shared the picture yet. Maybe also the dispenser to be
part of like the header for this thing. But it Spencer goes perhaps in a couple years that'll be
the next rendition of the March the the Garrett Wilson Corsino LaVe like the Jackson Smith and
Junge's picture because it was it was full of the young water seer talent. They were pretty hyped
coming off the field. I think they're they're kind of getting the hang of things as he goes through
these first couple days of practice with pads on. Yeah, we're going to talk to Cortez Hank
on Saturday, which is exciting because I'm ready to get some info from him just on what what he
thinks about this room. People I've talked to about this wide receiver room are
absolutely thrilled. You couple that with the fact that Ryan Day said that it's the deepest
receiver room they've had. You add in the fact that when asked whether they were going to continue
play 12 and 13 personnel like he did in Pittsburgh Arthur Smith instead talked about how
you can't get Jeremiah Smith the ball enough just like he did with Derek Henry. And he has to
adapt to the personnel meaning if they need to be an 11 personnel all the time with only one
title in the field they'll do it. The reports that I've gotten through week two tell me if you're
an 11 personnel guy and you hated 12 and 13 from last year you might just get your wish because
they love this receiver room. They're the rotation I would expect to be deeper than what Brian
Hartland did and that's on a knock on Hartland obviously they did a fantastic job. The one thing
about Hartland though is if you were in the three or four man group that was going to play you were
the only three or four that were going to play. And I think Cortez Hankins philosophy is a little
bit more toward if you're number six but you can play they will play you. And so
it's exciting. Like I said I'm not going to say too much just because I'd love to talk to Hank
in a little bit more about what he thinks but also get some vote of approval from Jeremiah Smith
on some of these guys because Jeremiah has never been one to shy away from either tempering expectations
and saying like oh yeah I think he's pretty good or saying like oh he's next he's up next you know
so I'm excited to see what Jeremiah has to say about those guys as well but you know we couldn't
have gone for more polar opposites here I guess we're just kind of rifling through some intel but like
the things we're hearing about the defensive line and the receivers very very promising so far.
And Spencer I know you had your full fledge of conversations throughout the week I've handled
the first couple here what is the biggest thing you learn from this week because I know you've
got a couple things as I break it stop you from giving your sneeze break. Yeah man this is just
absolutely tough I don't know what's going on I hope it's like a 24 hour thing.
Yeah it's interesting I have not going to
how do I word this because everyone else was steering that hype train for Legend Bay any week one
and I was pumping the brakes a little bit as you know not because I think the legends bad at all
I just think that it's a little difficult for a guy like legend with at his size to make an
impact as a freshman because I think what you don't have in size you've got to make up and speed
of the game and strength. I think I'm ready to to ease off that break a little bit I'm not going
to go full steam ahead of like true freshman all-American Malachi Tony impacting year one
but I will say like there are people at Ohio State who are even coming around now from people
we talked to who are now coming around to the idea that like yeah you're probably not going to
be able to keep him off the field during his freshman season. And so if we're saying that you know
four practices in five practices in the spring I think it's actually time to take your foot off
the break a little bit maybe not hit that accelerator but just understand that like
this is a you know I'm monitoring the situation as the boys would say I'm ready to to give that a
little bit more respect that he could be like hey he's going to be on the field against ball state
on the fifth on September 5th. And the other key part of that is Arthur Smith comes from the NFL
where he worked with a ton of different players and I think that's poppin the NFL is just having
these roles or these these specifically like specified things that players can do best and kind
of utilizing them in that way. I don't know if Legend Bay is going to walk into the season next year
in August and have a defined role on what he's going to like a defined starting spot or anything
but he's going to have a role or a package or different ways that Ohio State knows if he can impact
the game and they're going to let him do it probably from game one against ball state and kind of
to see how that rolls out. So I think we'll see a decent dose of Legend Bay obviously it's what
we're months away I think it's going to very well so happen. But I'd imagine we'd see a decent
amount of number two against the ball state cardinals when the season opens up. Yeah I mean look like
here's the reason that I was pumping the brakes the entire time.
Will or will geesh. Bo Jackson and Isaiah West are not on the practice field right now.
Is Legend Bay going to have such a spring that he takes over for those two?
Like straight up no. Just no. Bo and Isaiah are A too good and B too respected for them to just
completely hand their carries entirely to a freshman. And from what we've seen so far Legend's
not doing a lot of receiver. He can do all of that but right now he's playing running back. So like
and also he's not more reliable from what we know so far than Brandon and his and he's not as good
as Jeremiah Smith I'm sorry to say that. So you know like is he going to start I don't think so.
So like that's why I'm kind of pumping the brakes there a little bit it's just like the math
doesn't math you can only have 11 on the field. And there are other guys on this roster who I think
can play you know similar roles to Legend. But like if Arthur Smith says he's going to get the best
guys on the field and he's going to cater to his personnel like there's going to be a package I
think for Legend in the spring game. So if there's a package for him in the spring game that means
that they're already working on some stuff that they could do for him in the fall. So you know I'm
ready I'm ready to say that. It kind of coincides with the buzz that we hear about Jacobi Jackson.
That guy is just huge. I get it. Justice Haynes was out there and Ohio State fans wanted to
Ohio State to pay $2 million for Justice Haynes. He's a great player. He really is. I don't think
that's what Ohio State needed. They could have probably they they wanted him. Everybody wanted him.
He's a really good player. You know if he didn't get hurt I think Michigan has a better chance to
go to Ohio State last year and I think he might be the reigning Doke Walker Award winner like he
he was really good in his first eight games or whatever before he got hurt full stop. But like
based on what they had returning with Isaiah West and Bo Jackson based on what they brought in
with Legend Bay. What did they need? And I think they're even seeing on the practice field now
through two weeks that Jacobi Jackson is kind of what they needed. You know is he flashy? No.
Is he going to fall forward when you need to? Absolutely. He's a really big kid and I think he's
a little bit more athletic. Just from when we talked about this what last week or two weeks ago
just from playing running back more than CJ Donaldson because CJ Donaldson started his career as a
titan and a receiver. And so oh no I talked about just on the rooster show with Austin and Burman. I
made a celebrity guest appearance on there. I'm not so not so celebrity. Yes.
Guest guest is doing some heavy lifting on that celebrity is just like hanging on my thread.
Yeah I'm not a celebrity full full transparency. I say as I blow my nose on camera again.
But I talked about this with those guys like CJ Donaldson played tight end and wide receiver
at the start of his career. You know Jacobi Jackson will play a running back his entire life.
So you know I just think that naturally he's more of a running back. And so naturally I think he
can get a couple yards in short yardage when Ohio State's going to need it because I still don't
think Bo and Isaiah are going to be short yardage darlings. But yeah I think that legend fits in
and I think Jacobi Jackson fits into the equation here. And I'm kind of ready to say that now.
I'm not going to dog anybody. Not what I'm here to do. I got asked on the board on Thursday
when I did a asking you about any player. It's one of my favorite things I do on the letter of
a large message board which you can get for a dollar or it's 50% off for a full year right now.
It seems better than the dollar deal. Where does that leave turbo Rogers? I don't know. I really don't
know. I think it's a crowded room. I think it gets even more crowded in 2027. I don't know where that
leaves him. But he's going to have to have a gargantuan rest of the spring to make an impact.
Those are kind of some thoughts. What else do you want? Who else are you here and about? We both
talked to quite a few people on Wednesday at pro day when they were just kind of lurking around
the building. Anything else that you heard that maybe peak your interest? I'm going to keep it on
the freshman for a minute because we just talked about Legend Bay. I haven't heard a ton of
out of my no-burners. I've heard a ton of positive things about him. He wrote about him this week
when we're from highlighted six freshmen kind of three on offense around defense. But
Nick Lauder is going to be a player for Ohio State at some point. I don't know whether that's this
year or for that's in two years. I'm going to take some more time. But the freshman tied in from
Levin in Ohio. He was when he walked off the field on Tuesday. He looked like a giant. I talked
to him on Thursday. He said he was added about an inch or so maybe a little bit more
height-wise since we saw him coming down the tunnel during the recruiting process this last fall.
He's added about 20 pounds. He's like six six 240 already as a freshman. He's massive and I just
we don't need to put the full gas like the Legend Bay gas and like that into that one yet.
But I think that's somebody that Ohio State fans should be excited about being a player for
the buck guys down the line. I agree. We're talking to people. We talk to different people.
We talk to similar people. I agree. I think he's a player to know a name to know where
I don't even know what number he is right now. Is it 89? 89 correct. If you see 89
jog out on the field at some point in the middle of October in the second quarter
and you say like is that Wilkes Merrick? No, Wilkes Merrick's playing for the you know whatever
NFL team right now. No, that's Nick Lawner. That's a freshman. I wouldn't be surprised.
I think tight ends in an interesting spot right now. Nate Roberts, I think is a clear cut guy.
Bennett Christians out for the spring. Hunter Weltsy and Mason Williams are
working their way into everything and trying to get there. But you know just like
as Merrick at the beginning is Ohio State career. It takes a little bit for a back from Ohio
to get up the speed in Ohio State. As Merrick did that I think a little quicker than Mason Williams
has so far. That doesn't mean Mason Williams can't. I think he's got to get a lot stronger in the
summer. Like a lot stronger in the summer from people that I've heard. Like in the weight room
is where he's going to need to to to make his hey before August. And then Weltsy is just kind of
a a wily little veteran that you kind of you kind of like to have a guy like that in the room.
I don't know what kind of impact he's going to have but he's good to have in the room.
That leaves a spot in this spring for Nick Lawner to say like hey just because I'm a freshman
doesn't mean and then another guy is like you know we're in there the first day of spring practice.
They come off the practice field. Who's the tight end that Ryan Day shouts out? Max LaBlock.
So like I think this tight end would remind me the most meeting potatoes that it's been
you know like an NFL team next month is going to make him have a draft and it's going to be like
the Carolina Panthers or something. They're going to go like offensive line in the first round
defensive line in the second round linebacker in the third. They'll take a fourth round flyer
on a receiver and then it'll take like a tight end in the fifth round. And you know somebody
like a Daniel Jeremiah or a Jordan reader to his fans going to come on the the set after the draft
this was a very meeting potatoes draft for those guys like they're just you know beef and
not very sexy you know they just kind of got some positions filled that's why I feel about this
tight end room this year Nate Roberts might turn into that and if he does I won't be surprised
but the things I'm hearing about this tight end room is it's very like very meeting potatoes.
It's what you need but it's not going to be like super sexy and I think that's okay what you have
the receiving group and the running band group that Ohio State has in its offense do you think that's
fair for some of the things that you've been hearing so far. I'm totally lying there on that yeah
I think the depth of this tight end room will show an impact Ohio State some next season because
they have a lot of guys there. All right so I got to tell you about two things Mick we got to
tell you about two things then we'll give one final takeaway and then we'll get the heck out here.
First things first you guys have heard me talk about them for years now I'm not going to shy away
from talking about now especially in the spring. Got a text on my phone the other day came across my
desk. The folks over at Roeback have the Azalea collection back just in time for that tournament
down in Augusta in a couple weeks. If you don't see me rocking the subtle dog he's just he's
real little but he's right here he's right here and you know that that means that I'm wearing some
Roeback. The story that I love now is I walk into roosters a couple weeks ago we did a
thing with the Ohio State with Ohio State where we got to hang out with some folks and talk to
some folks and Cortez Hank was there. First thing he says to me he goes hey what is that I said
that's Roeback he goes yeah we used to have that down at LSU he goes those things are so nice you
look the second person on the beat who's been wearing that and I said yeah but none of those other
people got the 20% off by using the code letter them 20. So now you couple those two ideas it's
Cortez Hank didn't approve and he likes Jeremiah Smith Jeremiah Smith likes him so it's Cortez Hank
approved check Caleb Downs the former Roeback athlete check third if you're a fan of
of that big tournament down in Augusta like I am the masters they have a collection that over there
at Roeback for the Azalea collection that is absolutely stunning check fourth use the code letter
them 20 get 20% off your first order I don't know what else I got to say for you so go to
roeback.com right now use the code letter them 20 and check I'll get 20% off your full order
over at roeback.com it's the perfect time to do so because right now I can throw one of these
hoodies and I'll go catch around the golf I can go straight to the Woody and cover Ohio State
I still look pretty professional pretty good trade-off so if you need to wear something for casual
Friday you're trying to get away with something on a Thursday at work this Roeback hoodie trying
to catch a quick nine after work someday go straight from yeah we're 11 if you're a television's
Adam King playing 11 holes at golf and leaving the group you can go straight from work to the golf
course or from the golf course to work and you can wear one of these Roeback hoodies just like I do
if you want to be like me which you shouldn't because I'm not a celebrity go to roeback.com
use the code letter them 20 get 20% of your first order I'm going to start talking about them again
because first of all they help us out but also because if you haven't noticed I wear these
almost every day second of all he does our friends over it yeah and I've always worn Roeback our
friends over at a bad MGM you know you love them Mick knows them Mick loves them are doing this
new thing it's really cool Mick right now the Cavendor twins are facing off in a court of legends
game okay and you can enter our pick a twin to win free to win a free to play game for a chance to

you got a 50-50 chance to win they're gonna split those two million dollars in bonus bets between
all the people who picked whichever twin wins you go to bet MGM right now it's free to play you
pick a twin to win you'll win a share of two million dollars in bonus bets gambling problem
call 1-800 gambler available in the US 21 and over please gamble responsibly visit 1-800 gambler
dot net in West Virginia subject to eligibility requirements in partnership with the Kansas Cross
of Cassino and hotel this promotion is not available in Nevada Ontario or Puerto Rico Mick so I
got to ask absolutely massive stakes here who you got Haley or Hannah Cavendor
I'll take H Cavendor for the win wow wow right in the fence I can't believe it we didn't talk
about the Cavendors this past December we probably could have because of high-state playing against
Carson Beck if you know you know so there's there's a little Ohio State football tie-in to that but
go right now to bet MGM opt-in to win and then pick your twin and then you could win it's free
to play go do that I absolutely love that I picked my twin I'm gonna be completely honest with
you Mick I do not remember which twin I picked I'm just hoping that I win a share of the bonus bets
that's all you can ask for all right one parting thought from Ohio State camp um instead of writing
some intel uh like I said over on the Letterman Lounge message board I had our board members
dictate what intel I told um in which I said pick and any player on the roster and ask me about him
if I've heard about them in the first two weeks I will tell you what I've heard I think that's
pretty fair it also allows me to get a little bit more descriptive than maybe some general intel
general intel um that I have been hearing so I was able to kind of drill out on some players um so
Mick what what if what is your last little bit that you want your parting thought from the second
week of Ohio State camp I've unloaded the clip like I said I I'm just looking forward to Saturday
when we get to talk to scorches anything because I think we've heard positive things about all three
year I guess there's more the top three the Chris Henry Jr's Quaid Guilford and Brockwood like three
true fresh wonders you would think we've heard positive things from sources I want to hear something
on the record about those three so that's I guess more than anything that's my preview of what I
would like to hear on Saturday when we talked to Cortez Hangen and Jeremiah Smith so if you've been
this is my parting thought if you've been with us for 25 minutes now and you've stuck through my
nasally voice everyone is asking about the offensive line right now so if you're at the end of
this video you're going to get a little bit of offensive line and tidbit that I heard when Ian
Moore is good it's really really good okay it's what I've heard when when somebody told me that
Ian Moore's best has been really really good I think the thing that Ohio State wants to see from him
right now and I'm going to ask Ryan Day about this when we talked our end day next week the thing that
Ohio State wants to see right now more than anything is consistency play to play down to down day to day
come in be that good every day if he is like Luke Montgomery told us he could be a first round pick
I mean he's got the size he's got the shape he's got the like the legs that the NFL will fall in
love with in the NFL he's got the he's got the backside that the NFL is going to like in the NFL
like everything that you want to tackle like he can be that um he's really really strong he works
really hard it's just like consistently bringing his best of the practice field I think if he can
do that I think you'll see him make a push in the offensive line if he doesn't then you're going to
know that by not seeing him out on the field much so that's not um me being told to like challenge
Ian through the media or anything it's just kind of what up here so I hope that if you if you
stuck around with us this long you kind of paid off at the end because like everybody's been asking
about him he was really good against Miami in the second half people agree with that that I talk
to he had a nice day against Purdue when he started in that game um I think there's just a little
bit of consistency that they want to see from him uh moving forward uh here's the Luke Montgomery
quote on Ian Moore this week we haven't really ever talked about it skyse limit for him well I'll
think it'll be a first round first rounder by the time he's done here so Luke Montgomery like
others around the Ohio State program pulling no punches like taking no time to throw praise on
Ian Moore so hopefully we get to see more of it in the spring game see a little approval
there we go still prove Luke Montgomery this show I think is Luke Montgomery approval
want to find out uh that's Mick Walker on the other side of your screen I'm Spencer
homework we're just trying to Luke Montgomery's approval guys it's it's not really I don't you know
uh I think we got Mike shout out Mike Montgomery yeah exactly make sure Mike listens to the show
mix and it over to him we'll talk to him we'll talk about it uh and then if you uh if you get
