You do not enjoy summer as much as I do, but it is, you know, in the calendar flips to September, you start certainly looking forward to the various storylines that are going to be developing. And you know, this year in particular, I think there's

3:09a couple teams whose outcomes could be wildly fluctuating. And I also am excited because for the seventh year in a row, I think Edmonton is on the list of, you know, about seven or eight teams, so legitimately, I have a shot to win all this year. So that's exciting as well. Do you think this team this year can win the Pacific division because I do. Oh, I mean, absolutely. I think I think it'd be silly to, you know, I mean, I thought the others were the favorite to win the division last year. And I would make them a slight favorite to win this year. I absolutely think they can win the division. When you've got the core that Edmonton does, you're always going to have a shot. And it's just a matter of, you know, how the entry is falling as usual for Edmonton, you know, what kind of goal-tending they get. I think the other thing the Oilers have to establish an order to win the division this year that they did not do

4:15last year when the division was there to be won. I think what did Vegas win it with 95 points? That was the number. That was the number. If you remember, I called early. I said, the way it's going, there's no way the division winners get an honored point. And that's because the Oilers could have put together a streak. And I think that's the other reason they didn't win the division last year. They didn't win three in a row until March. It's hard to win a division like that. So absolutely, though, I think Edmonton probably is the favorite to win the division only because, you know, was that Vegas's last gas? And they've got a new coach and some different things going on this year with their honky clubs. So I don't necessarily, you know, think they're going to be, you know, fighting to make the playoffs, but I also don't think you can make Vegas a strong favorite. I think they're going to have some growing pains, especially early, potentially adjusting to a new coach. Well, they're not the only team with a new coach. And you were always a big believer

5:18in Glenn Gulletson. And I think we saw last year, then Chris Noblock, who did a solid job. In Abiton, it needs to be stated, did a solid job. The staff had a, you know, a challenging time last year and there's been changes made. The Oilers have a new coaching staff. And it is important that it's Mike Babcock and DJ Smith. So it's, they've got experience to say at least on their coaching staff, don't they? Well, yeah, I mean, the, you know, Mike Babcock obviously has coached at every level of the game there is. And then you've got DJ Smith, who's not only been a coach in this league, but if you remember, he had, I don't know whether I would say it's the humility or the passion, but he went straight from being a head coach in the NHL to an assistant coach. And that's not something you see that often where a head coach in the league and an established one at that, you know, takes an assistant job and gets right behind the bench and is willing to go, you know,

6:23that route. I think you've got a passionate guy who has experience with Mike Babcock already under his belt. In addition, everything else he's done, very similar to Mike Babcock. He's enjoyed success at various different levels of the game. Obviously not quite on Babcock's level, but, you know, he's one of Memorial Cop, I mean, he's used to being in big games. He's certainly seen Edmonton in big games. So I think, you know, as much a do has been made and understandably so, considering, you know, the way Mike Babcock's career in Toronto ended and the way it never really got off the ground in Columbus. I understand the noise around the hiring, but you still are bringing in a veteran coach with a wide variety of experience, who knows the oilers personnel, who knows one of the co-oilers very well, and who is not afraid to coach in a market that absolutely

7:30demands the absolute best. I mean, his last two stops were original 16s, and prior to that, he took a team that no one thought to get to 500 let alone a Stanley Cup final within one game of the Stanley Cup. So I know those are, you know, years gone by, and I understand the skepticism there, but I don't think, you know, I don't think there's a huge transition coming simply because the oilers have an older experience team. I think the growing pains might be there if this was a team, if Mike Babcock had been hired when Dave Tibbet was hired, Bob, I think there would have been some growing pains, but he comes into a team that's seen every kind of coach and every kind of situation at all times the noise around them the last, you know, five years Edmonton has

8:30been talked about as a potential winner. They're not going to be, you know, cowed by a guy that might bring a different style than to which they're accustomed, let's say, the last four or five years. Who's going to you know take the mantle, let's say the first 20 games of the year. Who's going to who's going to establish themselves as you know the early on number one? That for me is the biggest storyline in that. And it's not so much because I don't think there'll be a bit of a transition there without Darnel Ders. I think most of that and the curiosity behind that for me has to do with inside the locker room and the general leadership core that's been intact the last five or six years. You're taking a guy out of there and not only a guy out of there, but not necessarily the strong silent type or the outgoing slager type. So I think there

11:37I think there might be an adjustment there. The reason I'm confident in terms of the on ice product is that while Ryan Shayne no one knew him before last year, I will say this. I mean Ryan Shayne and Mattias Echelb are on a list of I believe six guys that had 35 points and a plus 30 rating in the league last year. So he's coming off a really nice here not necessarily a Daren radish type here, but in the ballpark and similar to radish a seasoned guy in the American Hockey League finally got his chance to play top four minutes and played very well and all of a sudden will Shayne's now a fixture. Look at radish and how coveted he was. So I'm not saying he's there in radish. He certainly doesn't have Daren radish. You shot, but that's because he is an experienced guy with a breakout season last year. I don't see any regression on the ice. It's more

12:43the off ice leadership and how does nurse who had a bit of a personality bob especially inside the room. It's a quiet room as you know. I'll be curious to see the variables behind that and who might bring a little swagger off the ice in the room that certainly nurse was capable of and and just instilling confidence in your teammates. I'm not saying David and drives that or don't do it, but nurse did it a certain way with his combustible personality. That's what you're missing at the beginning of the season and it'll be interesting to see how the chips fall there. Jack it's interesting because last year I mean you look at nobody was close to where Ryan Shay was in Pittsburgh plus minus wise. I know some people don't like the plus minus stat. You know, G. S. E. Holmes led the NHL plus minus. The orders of acquired him. He went plus 32 last year. Boo Shard for all his trials and tribulations early in the year ended up plus 25 with 95 points.

13:48So there you have it. Jack, would you use Conor, but David and Leon Dry settle on the penalty kill. I'll tell you why the last three Stanley Cup champions Sebastian Aho and Carolina last year. The two years Florida one with Sasha Barclough and the year Jack Keigle and Vegas won. All three of those teams used their first line centers regularly on the PK. What are your thoughts on David now Conor pointed a decent amount last year. Leon was significantly reduced though he's their best face off man. What do you think? I'm not turning cartwheels over it unless the deployment of the PK and the system implemented changes, Bob. And here's why I like Conor McDavid on the penalty kill, but I don't like him as a guy who grabs the puck and just shoots it down the I. I think you'd agree with me that if you analyze those minutes on the PK, how many thought that he really take it to the hole and you know create shorthanded chances.

14:50I think it'll be a situational deployment at most where maybe if you're down, you get him out there looking to counter attack. I don't like to conserve the PK with McDavid out there. If you go to a more aggressive situation, you tell McDavid, hey, if you see anything go, then I would do it. I didn't see him use that way on the PK and I thought it took away at least in my mind some of the reasons that I would have to have him out there. Jack, one of the things we often do when we have you on the show, especially at this time of year, is we pivot and we're going to do that right now. So tell us the truth because you have a connection and I'm wondering if you're going to become like Aiden and become a Seattle Seahawks fan, especially given that for some reason, a guy from Western Pennsylvania ended up being a fan of the Cleveland Browns. So are you thinking about changing your loyalty and your fandom? What's that? Can I be bought as what you're saying?

15:57Look, I am ecstatic. I'm really happy for Jesse. He's got a great family. Him and Danielle have to be over the moon. I think to some degree, you don't really understand unless you know the hell the way you and I do. How exclusive a club does it? I mean, there's not a lot of stories like the Islander Sky, John Spandals, that you know, trying to try to get the NHL. I mean, the NFL is such a vetted community. It is tough to get in there and you know, there's a certain presence in the United States that you know, was not able to get into that club. It's a tough club and I'm thrilled for Jesse Vandor-Wurf. I know you and I are buddies with him. So we're obviously a little bit biased, but it's great for him and his family. I'm sure they're celebrating. It's phenomenal and yet it's another story. 17:00you know, when Pat Bowling got involved with Denver Broncos. It's yet another success story of a guy who made his mark in Western Canada and ultimately was heard from around the world. It's one of the reasons that Edmonton and Alberta is such a special place because it seems to spawn excellence in a wide variety of fields, not just the hockey department. And Jack, there's an old saying, money talks, but wealth whispers. If you met Jesse, you wouldn't, you think he's a pretty regular guy. You wouldn't know that he's got like 2500 employees and he's now like, you know what I'm saying? It's not like he's a great, like the guy's a heavy metal. They were fun. You know, I remember the dinner we did in Vancouver a couple of years ago. That was awesome. But, uh, no, you would never know. You would never know. Well, I would never, I mean, I, I make fun of him too much to ever say, Jesse's a regular guy,

18:03but I know what you mean. What you mean is he's not a guy who condescends to anyone. Right. But he is, he is not a regular guy. He is an ultimate character. He's like, you know what he is, Bob? He's like you. He's a unicorn. When they made him, they broke the mold and I would say the same thing about you. Oh, well, I take that as a compliment. You didn't ask the question. Are you going to become a, are you still at the Browns? Like who's their cornerback this year? Well, unfortunately, the Sean Watson remains the starter because of that $252 million Albatross that, uh, upon signing, no one, including you and I thought that was a good deal anywhere in the world. Uh, he's still the quarterback. The answer to your question is for some strange reason, no one will be able to beat the Browns out of me. But if Jesse's kind enough to bring me to a Cleveland Seattle game in Seattle, I will wear my colors, but suddenly so how about that?

19:05Well, I can tell you, uh, you know, you, you may, you looked after us with your main man foot in Pittsburgh last year and, uh, we, we needed to stay warm. So I was attired in a, in a Steelers Mean Joe Green, uh, Jersey. And I got a lot of looks, Jack. By the way, I thought, I, I don't think being Joe even wore that jersey as well as you did. Yeah, well, it's awesome in that shirt. It'd be a little tougher for me to wear these days, Jack, but, uh, anyways, I know you're like the Greyhound Bob. Yeah, well, let's not go too far. So in our fantasy football pool, where basically it's a keeper pool. So you get that, like, he's going to go in the top three picks overall because he's a rookie. And so it's only rookies that

So be, uh, because Walker played a Michigan state and, Bill Scott's alma mater and, uh, Duncan Keith as well, since we were talking about David Staples and the Duncan Keith trade. So there you go. Uh, the see hocks we get. Who are they? quarterback again? What's the same? Sam Darnel. What were the jets thinking? Uh, man. What were the Vikings thinking? Yes. Throw that out there instead. Honestly, you didn't look good on the jets or on the Panthers. And he was a backup in San Francisco. But he had a breakout season with minutes. It's wild. They won a bunch of games, but just rough. Usually if you're at USC, you're a pretty good quarterback. Yeah. It's a real thought. Right. Cause they've always had a high octane pass in offense.
