Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout Podcast.
I'm Terry Moro and I'm Catherine Helacco.
As parents and parenting writers, we can't help but see everything through parenting lens.
But as our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested in getting caught
up on movies and streaming than on going over the same parenting topics over and over.
So since we're pretty sure we can find parenting wisdom anywhere, we're going to talk about
what we're watching, what we thought about it, and maybe what we can learn from it, if
only what not to do.
Watch and listen along and let's all make like we're doing something important for our
families.
Each Wednesday we bring you a watch or rewatch of an older entertainment property.
And for this week of March 30th, we are continuing with last season 5, episode 7, the
life and death of Jeremy Bentham.
So here we have, this is how Locke got off the island and, you know, took on the name
of Jeremy Bentham briefly and...
Well, it opened a box.
Yes, wound up in a box.
All, of course, thanks to Ben.
Yes.
Well, Charles Woodmore.
And Charles Woodmore was also involved, yeah.
But Locke, less prepared to land in the middle of the Tunisian desert than Ben was.
And quite injured when he got there with his bone sticking out of his leg.
So that was lovely.
But then some guys showed up in a pickup truck and threw him in the back.
Took him to a rudimentary hospital of some kind.
So...
Where who should come and visit him?
Yes.
But...
Mr. Charles Woodmore.
David bad dad.
That's right.
Charles Woodmore.
Mm-hmm.
Lots of focus, focus, island, lore, focus, focus.
Do my well.
Yeah.
Good time.
I think she gets later from Ben on the other end.
But...
These two, can we just put them like in a cage and have them duke it out and then leave
everybody else alone?
Ben and Charles Woodmore?
Yes.
I agree.
Let's do it.
We drop them in the middle of the desert and just say, good luck to you two.
Leave everybody else alone.
But no.
No.
Everybody is but a chess piece, too.
That's what Charles Woodmore and them land, including most especially Locke.
What a...
It is in particular, particular sad sack mode in this episode.
Yeah.
The man could not get a break.
Even Walt kind of blows him away.
Mm-hmm.
So when he was saying, I only need to get one of them and then they'll all go.
Yeah.
Was that Jack?
Like, who do we think that was referring to?
Yeah.
I think that was just positive thinking on his part.
I think he thought if he could get any one of them, the rest of them would be.
Oh, okay.
But certainly not one particular one.
At the end, Ben was saying, I think Ben was saying if you could get Jack, the rest
of them will come.
And that...
Well, that's not true either because Jack has been going, we have to go back and they're
all going, yeah.
No.
Right.
Yeah.
So I don't think at this point there's any one of them that would guarantee all the rest
of them went back, except possibly...
I don't...
How did they get...
I can't even remember now how they got the molding.
Well, they haven't told us yet about all of them.
No.
That's right.
That's right.
We haven't gotten there yet.
So...
I mean, most of them, like, we haven't...
We don't...
The only person that we really know is Jack, right?
I mean...
They have an ex...
Or son.
We know.
Son's going back to Siegiann, right.
But we don't know about Kate, Sayid, Hurley.
Right.
So...
That was fun that Hurley assumed he must be a figmetational agent.
When Locke shows up at the Santa Rosa Medical Facility where Locke is going to be.
To yell with people around him, am I talking to a guy in a wheelchair right now?
Actually, yes.
Oh, dear.
Poor Locke.
Yeah.
So...
So psyched to be a hero and then he just can't land it.
No.
Ever, ever.
Yeah.
And he's just being used by whichever force happens to be the nearest.
Right.
Yes.
It's just...
So what hurling him back and forth between Woodmore and Ben and just...
Yes.
And then he has Matthew Abedon with him for a little while.
Yeah.
Before.
Till he gets...
He's surprisingly killed by Ben.
Brain splatters all over the back of a cup.
But I had forgotten that he was...
Yeah, he's the one who told Locke to go on the walk.
Yeah.
So he's been around.
They've all been around.
It's just very weird.
Yeah.
But this is the guy that they're like following around.
Yeah.
It's Locke.
Hmm.
More valuable to them dead than alive probably.
Yeah.
But anyway, he gets in a car crash and that puts him in Jack's hospital because of course it does.
And...
Yeah.
Just we're just...
He's struggling towards that last scene between Locke and...
Right.
Exactly.
Which I had last week when Ben kept saying how Locke killed himself.
He killed himself.
And you know, he killed himself.
And I'm like, you are such a liar.
So...
He was going to...
I know what you did.
Yeah.
That I just really always remembered that scene because it seemed like Locke was in the
car and then Ben just mercilessly strangles him.
And...
Yeah.
And then cleans up everything and it's like, I'll take this wedding ring.
That will be useful to me.
Thank you very much.
Yes.
Yep.
And I mean, do we think it was really just hearing the name Eloise Hawking that prompted him to do this?
I'm not sure about my husband was asking me that.
And I can't remember if he needed that information.
Mm-hmm.
And then he was like, or...
If he wanted to be the one to be dealing with Eloise Hawking or...
I don't know why that was the ding.
Okay.
Yeah.
I have enough.
I've heard enough.
So long so.
Yeah.
Yeah, I don't know.
Yeah.
Hi.
And then we have...
And then also seen in the framing device in this episode where they're on the island.
And Locke is walking around and looking pretty hailing her.
That's right.
Not looking like a fellow that was...
Had the life choked out of them and then hung up in his apartment.
So what up with that?
And also going back to him being on the island.
I forgot about...
I forgot to mention in the previous week when they're all on the plane.
And they...
You know, Frank Lapitas comes out of the cockpit and is like, oh, it's you guys.
And then he's like, I guess we're not going to Guam.
Why?
Did he not turn around and be like, I am out of here.
I'm not flying this plane with these people at it.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, I think he may feel like it's out of his hands now.
I guess.
Something weird's going to happen.
And he's correct.
But it does appear now based on what the people were saying.
Based on the fact that there are miscellaneous passengers crashed on the island.
That the oceanic six got plucked off by the beam of light.
Right.
But then everybody else crashed.
I thought it would be the rest of them would just continue on their flight.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Oh, we always got to have a plane load of randos on you.
It's like one of the masks is locked.
What the deal is with the island.
And he's like, we don't have enough time.
You're right.
We're not going to get into that right now.
Maybe D's of the first several.
Enjoy.
This will bring you more questions and answers, but it will take a little time.
You see some smoke stay away.
Oh, man, suckers.
Yes.
So that's so what is is I mean, last time lock went to the island.
This case, it just completely brings it back.
Right.
Like Christian Shepherd brings it back to life and heals his leg, which was again messed up.
And and makes him seem much more confident and you know, pre-possessed the need.
Well, I guess pre brought back to life will do that for you, right?
I guess.
And then at the very end of the episode, the reveal.
Guess who's there?
Guess who wasn't plucked off with the beam of light, but he's going to be so ticked that he wasn't plucked off with the chosen ones.
What?
I had to crash.
I had to crash like everybody else.
I had to get, you know, my face beat up once again.
Like we could have been playing a drinking game of like Ben up here with busted up face.
So there's a makeup guy whose job is just to mess up and he's making good back.
So let's let's not let's not deny the person in their work.
Yeah.
But yeah.
And you know, lock is very, you know, yes, that's the guy who killed me.
And I guess I was wearing these clothes because they were in a berry man.
Right.
It's just very cool and calm and collective.
Being back on the island is good for him.
Yeah.
And we really didn't get the oceanic six.
No.
At least on the island, we had they encounter with had them saying no way, dude, to lock right in the before time of before the before they went back.
Yes.
I had to go back.
So so parenting parenting tip was don't here's one.
Don't trust people who are claiming to be helpful.
Yeah.
Uh, you know, lock needed to be a little more suspicious which rolls with more.
And a band.
Yeah.
And a band.
Yeah.
And we had already knows about band.
Do not let this man into your house.
What are you doing?
Um, but you know, you know,
you know, you know, you know, you know, trust but verify maybe or or just be have your have your guard up a little bit.
Yeah.
I've had that experience in parenting of somebody who seems to want to do something for you.
And it's like, probably we're fine.
Thanks.
But it's like you want you want to be the one approaching people.
You don't want to be the one approached.
Right.
Because you just don't know.
Right.
And uh, another parenting tip could be don't get messed up in other people's drama.
I feel sorry for those other plane crash survivors because this isn't about you guys.
Right.
We're so sorry.
If you would wait it to buy your plane ticket, Hurley would have bought it and you wouldn't have been there.
You're fine.
Yeah.
Nobody else should have been on that plane.
This isn't about you.
We're so sorry.
But I think things are going to go badly for you.
Yeah.
You got, you got, uh, you got smoke monster fodder written all over you.
I'm very sorry.
Yep.
So, you know, maybe just be careful.
Watch where you're going.
If there it seems to be, if somebody's trying to buy off the entire plane, maybe just sell them your ticket.
Maybe they can.
Why?
I'll take the next one.
Yep.
You don't, you don't, this is not, you don't need to be here.
Yeah.
Um, and the same, along the same lines as don't trust people who are claiming to be helpful.
And also a thing from the shrinking episode as well is look out for manipulation.
Yeah.
If people are telling you a good story, wonder what is the catch.
Yeah.
Think of, think of, uh, Brian's selfishness, uh, thing and, and be a little selfish.
Look out for yourself.
Consider yourself.
Um, and, uh, you know, if they're acting like they're going to help you do something, are they really?
Maybe, and is this really something you need to be doing?
And, of course, this show is all about manipulation, but, uh, including manipulation of the viewers.
Uh-huh.
Be careful.
Don't believe anything we are on this show.
They're going to change it by the next season.
And this line made me laugh just from a parenting point of view in that what we do for our kids.
I mentioned that somebody said he would have to die.
You have to die.
That's why they call it sacrifice.
Somebody says that.
Um, and it's like as parents, you know, you sacrifice for your kids.
You usually don't have to die, but sometimes you have to do stuff that kills you.
Like go to a high school graduation, Jimmy's dad.
Yeah.
You're all about you.
It's a sacrifice for the people you love.
Think about it, dude.
Yes.
So, lock did indeed have to die.
But, the good news is, all it took was an airplane ride and a time blast of some kind.
And now he's back to life.
Yep.
He's all calm, cool and collected in a nice suit.
That's right.
Some nice shoes in Jack's dad's shoes.
Yeah.
Do you think Christians like lurking around and he's going to be like, hey, those are my shoes.
How'd you get those?
Take those off.
Isn't it lucky that they were the same size?
So handy.
Yeah.
Not something you can necessarily count on.
No.
So, this show, when lock was talking to Kate and she was like making it all about you
never loved someone which is not the case.
She's all going, you know, just the teenage love trial triangle thing wearing its head.
Yes.
I felt.
And I don't know.
I guess lock has not been paying attention.
It's not been what, listening to our podcast.
Why didn't he tell her soyer is alive and on the island?
Yeah.
Last thing she knows, he jumped out of a helicopter into the ocean.
She thinks he's dead.
Theoretically.
Say, oh, he's alive and he's waiting for you.
He's so sad that you're not there.
If only you could go back and see him.
That's all it would take.
She would be packing her suitcase.
Send in the kid to grandma's and yep.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's all it would take.
Yes.
Get that triangle working for him.
No.
Think about it, bud.
Yeah.
He's screwed that one.
Among so many other things.
And Helen apparently has passed.
Yeah.
RIP.
Yep.
Unless somebody involved in this grand conspiracy just like constructed a headstone over and put it
there just as grandma.
Exactly.
Which we would not put past any of our manipulators here.
Yeah.
Oh, man.
Well, next week's episode.
It's one I've been looking forward to.
Okay.
Well.
It's finally here.
Yes.
It's as good as I remember it then.
Next week is season five, episode eight.
It is called Lafleur.
And it is a Sawyer episode.
