Parshas Re’eh: The Red Button — If Judaism Were Optional for 24 Hours, Would You Press It?

About this episode

A big red button sits next to your bed. Press it and you get 24 hours with no Torah, no mitzvot, no kosher, no Shabbat restrictions, and no accountability afterward. The question sounds playful, but it turns brutally honest fast: do we experience Judaism as a burden we’d love to escape, or as a life we’d never trade away?

We open Parshat Re’eh and focus on the Torah’s surprising word choice: “See, I place before you today blessing and curse.” Why “see”? Drawing on a Slabodka yesod, we explore how spiritual growth depends on vision, not just information. When Torah stays abstract, the “other path” looks exciting. When Torah becomes real in the mind’s eye, you can actually see where each road leads.

Then we flip the usual framing of reward and punishment. The verses describe the blessing as listening itself and the curse as not listening itself, meaning the Torah life in this world is the bracha. We talk about Jewish pleasure, prayer as mindfulness, suffering with context, and a classic midrash about two paths that start opposite and end opposite. If you’ve ever felt the tug of the “day off” fantasy, this conversation is for you. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review with your answer: would you press the button?
