It's Paul Hamilton. That's what they called me a college. He has the facts to back up his opinions.
People ask me, well, how are the sabers going to be going to win tonight? Oh, cool.
Now WGR sports radio 550. Welcome back. Paul will join us momentarily. The high
temperature in Amherst today, I'm seeing was 62. And right now it feels like 22. Nice.
And we have a winter weather advisory to contend with until early tomorrow morning.
Good times. I want to say something like just when you think it's over. I didn't think it was over.
No, no one should have thought it was over. Just because it, you know, spiked a little bit.
And I think you should still be allowed some room to complain about it, even though you didn't
think it was going to be over. Oh, sure. Like the weather police. Oh, there's only March. Yeah, I know.
I know, but it was like I was outside in shorts yesterday. And now it's 20 again. So, you know,
I'm a little put out, but I'm not surprised. But things that aren't surprising can also be aggravating.
Oh, it's so true. Paul, would you not agree with that? I mean, that's, that's a mantra for life.
I think Patrick Hammer might have tweeted something on the lines earlier that it fell 20 degrees
in 20 minutes. Yeah. Something like something like that. It was, it was like goofy. Yeah. And I know
he, you know, heading into the weekend, he was telling you like look out Monday afternoon,
Monday evening. You're looking at like 60 to 20 as a high high temp difference, which is pretty
jarring. Yeah. It's like that. No, I don't have it. I think supposed to be sitting in 90 right now.
Right. Yeah. You, uh, you were trying to get the Las Vegas earlier than you needed to. And that too,
I, I, people, I know in Florida, like can't fly out of anywhere to get back. Yeah. Right now.
Lots of problems. It's a real mess right now. Lots of problems. Yeah. It didn't make any sense,
really, because the first flight I got canceled on was a direct flight Buffalo to Vegas, which had
nothing to do with the Midwest weather. And then the one they rebooked me on was coming through
Baltimore, which again had nothing to do with the Midwest weather. But somehow that got, that got
canceled too. So we're going to try it again tomorrow morning one last time. Well, good luck.
I'm rooting for you, Paul. Me too. We need you out there, Paul. We want you to be with these, with
this team on these trips when it's going as well as it's going. If you subscribe to the station in
certain ways, you get an email every day. This is what, you know, we were talking about or writing
about. And this latest one I got from WGR today includes the headline, are the Sabers still in
good form? This might take me to a conversation, Paul, involving yourself. What's your answer to
that? I mean, it's a win Saturday and then the lost to Washington before. Would you say they are
still in good form? They got back to it. Third parody against Toronto. They took Toronto 11 minutes
and 41 seconds to get their first shot. They stopped turning the puck over. The Sabers I mean.
And, you know, we're killing plays. We're playing great D. I think they gave up two shots
the whole period. One, the first shot was a great A, but Lion made a great save on it.
But that was the Sabers we'd been used to seeing for the past couple of months. Just, you know,
have the lead at the time. It was tied. Just, you know, don't give them anything and wait for your
opportunity. And in this particular case, opportunity came in the shootout. So that was more what
we've been used to seeing is what we saw in the third period after. I would say probably four
games of turning the puck over and playing a little wild, a lot more wild than they had been playing.
And I guess we learned on Saturday night that when the Leafs are this bad,
this late in the year, that maybe some of those fans aren't going to make the trip. Paul,
because it was the most pro Buffalo Saber Leaf game in many years. The place were all canceled.
I could tell right away, like when we were waiting for the Leafs to come on the ice,
usually that's 30, 35, 40 rows deep where they come out. Next to the glass, it was maybe five
rows deep for this. I was like, said to Brian, it was everybody. Yeah. I said, usually this is mobbed
and in in Leaf fans and it was springtime is almost here. And if you've been itching to redo
every room in your home, Bob's discount furniture can help. When you shop at Bob's, you get well

There was people were in the building. It was a so out and I didn't see too many empty seats,
but every time the goalief got going, the saber fans drowned him out immediately.
Their goal tender wool said this is the first time in his career he has ever come to Buffalo,
and it wasn't a home game for Toronto. He said give the saber fans credit because it was their
building for once, and he goes his first time I've ever been in here where it's been their building.
Well, long time coming. So at least, and we're done with that for the year. Toronto does not come
here again. The north of the sabers go there. They're done with the Leafs for the season. So
No Matthews too. Right, right. And Paul, we talked about this on Friday. I didn't know what to
expect. I thought at least I'd get the staged fight to start the game, or maybe a lot more than
that because the Leafs had spent the preceding 24 hours basically getting slogged for not responding
when Matthews got cheap-shotted by one of the most notorious cheap-shot artists in league history,
by the way, who does it matters too. But there really wasn't much in the way of that. I mean,
the Leafs just kind of wanted to get through the game. It seemed like there were a couple of fights.
That's right. Shen fought. That's right. It didn't look like they were trying to prove a point,
I guess. It was early that the couple of fights came. Maybe when they were trying to prove a point,
and then they got away from it. They got back to being the Leafs.
Well, they head out on this trip, Paul. And I think the big question, not to give us credit for
talking about the thing that most Saber fans are thinking the most about right now. But I feel like
the decor and the makeup of the decor is really going to be interesting to follow here for the next,
well, they've got 15 games left. Rough sounds like he's not really looking to take Metza out of the
lineup with how he sounded Saturday night. He's played like he deserves to be in. You've said
similarly the last few times we've talked about him. I know Stanley and Shen are together because
there was an injury and that probably isn't in the cards. But how do you think they will end up
handling the decor overall? Will Metza get maybe a more elevated role and they'll space the top four
out a little bit? What do you think they're going to do with the D moving forward?
They should, but practice did not tell me that that's what they're going to do. Practice
told me that Stanley and Shen are going to stay in the lineup. And Metza will not
because it looks like Samuelson has a pretty good chance of being back. And Metza did a fine job
filling in playing with Dali and had the most minutes he has played all season or in his NHL
career. And didn't get scored on. Hasn't been scored on since October. He has been on the ice
for 19 goals for and two against and both were in October. And Lindy Ruff said,
you know, I kind of thought he might send him down to hang out with the Amherst until they
needed him or something like that. But he said, no, he's earned the right to be here.
And he said, we're going to dress the lineup that we think is going to give us the best chance
to win. I said, does that include him? He goes, absolutely, it could. And in my mind, it should. To
me, he's their number five defenseman. I put him ahead of all those guys. And Timmins,
Kesselring, Shen, Stanley, all of them. And to me, he'd be in my lineup every night. And then
you could alternate the number six guy if you wanted to or if you wanted Stanley in because you
might start a riot every game. You're fine. Have him play with Metza and that's your that's your
pair and the rest of them wait until there's an injury or something. So, um, you know, I,
that's how I would do it. But I'm not getting the impression that's how Lindy Ruff's going to do it.
Where would you slot Timmins in all this? He's been out a long time.
They miss him on the penalty kill. He's a really, really good penalty killer. He was a shot blocking
machine. Never really turned the puck over penalty killing. But five on five, he turned it over a lot.
Um, his five on five was totally different than his penalty kill, which again makes me,
all right. Um, you know, I probably, I would have him ahead of Shen, probably.
Kesselring, I know he's playing injured. He said so himself. Um, I have seen some better games
out of him, but still I, you know, you can tell he's not 100%. Um, so I guess if I was going to say,
all right, dress your best six, I guess my third pair would be Stanley and Metza.
I wonder, I wonder if we'll get that when we'll get it. Um, I wonder if it maybe waits until even
the playoffs get here. Paul, I mean, I'm just really curious to see how they dole that out. The
thing that I think, and please correct me if I'm mistaken here, but I don't think Metza plays any
special teams, right? I mean, he's outranked on the power play for sure, obviously, by power and
Dalline and probably even Byram too, um, for that matter. So if they wanted to go three deep on a
demon there, and occasionally they've used power and Byram as a pair on that second power play unit.
But nonetheless, he's not doing that. He's not killing penalties for you. And that maybe that makes
it makes it tough to keep him in if you're going to shelter him and he's not giving you anything
on either of the special teams units. Look, he certainly can kill penalties. I just think they like
the guys that they have doing it because they're doing a really good job of it for the most part.
So I think, you know, that they just like, but he could definitely, I mean there, I think he would
do a fine job if he had the opportunity just because of the way he plays. Um, you know, he doesn't
get himself into trouble and he doesn't put the puck in places that gets him in trouble.
And that's why he plays so well. So, you know, I think he could, if, if called upon, but, um,
that you're right, that hasn't been something that he rough has called upon him to do. And he
played 15 minutes just fine the other night when he was with Dalline for a lot of the time. He
doesn't need to only play eight minutes. But that's how they get the ice time up on the other four
because when like Mets is dressed with Kesselring, Mets and Kesselring never play together.
Like Mets doesn't play a shift on the left defense. He doesn't want.
So what happens is when each one gets a shift, one might go out with Dalline, then the next one
goes out with Byram. And then they sit for a while. And then it's time to give them a shift.
And one of them comes out with Dalline. And that's kind of the way they've done it.
Now, when the third pair was a lefty righty, when as Bryson Metsa, they would come out together.
And I thought quite honestly, Bryson was having his best year and Metsa was Metsa. So that's the
reason why they would play as a pair. But with two righties, they haven't. How much time do you
think is reasonable to give any of these guys? Stanley, I guess, is the one that I'm most curious
about Paul because I think he was the one acquired with the most expectation. You know, like I
sort of feel like from talking to you and just following it and knowing these players' careers,
I feel like they got Stanley to be a third pair mean guy, cross-check people, you know,
be physical, use his length, all that, hard to play against. And Shen's a spare part with
experience. So if you need to lean on him, hopefully you can get through it. But like, I don't
feel like he really figures in prominently if they're all healthy. Stanley, I think does.
How long do you think it should take him to sort of acclimate and sort of find someone,
whether it's eventually Timmans or Kusselring or Metsa, like you're saying, that they can have
some chemistry with and feel like the coaching staff can trust them.
To be fair, I thought the two of them were a little bit better as the game went on against
Toronto. Of course, they had that big turnover that tied the game at one right in front of the net.
And they probably had to start their careers in Buffalo, probably went together, maybe four and a
half or really, really tough periods. And then I thought they improved, you know, and maybe
brought the middle of a second period on from that point. And the third period, again, they weren't
turning the puck over, they weren't stressed in their own zone or any of that kind of stuff.
So it seemed like, and Lindy Ruff said, the way the Sabers play is different from the way
the Jets play. So he said he's got to kind of get the Jets game out of them and the Sabers game
into them a little bit. And so that's how Lindy Ruff explains it. Maybe the reason that they've had
problems in his mind. Only their fourth shootout of the year. And their first in three months,
almost late December was their last shootout. And they've won them all. And it's been three
different goalies. I heard the name Colton Ellis today. I'm like, oh, yeah. Still a part of this
thing. And Quinn realized, go ahead. In lion's case, do you realize he's only letting three
shootout goals in his career? Didn't know that. I mean, is there a lot of entire career? Is there
a lot of 14? It's 14 to 17. That's crazy. Six and one this year. One goal against him.
Luke and in five and oh, stop five or it's been, you know, no goal anyway. Sometimes shots go
wide. So Quinn is the one three at the Hattrick, of course, last week. And then shootout goal against
the Leafs. He's three and a power play goal against the Leafs. And a power play goal. Three for
four on the year in shootouts. What's his secret? He's money. I mean, it's just he has so much confidence
when he gets to certain spots in front of a goal tender. And he doesn't, you know, five on five,
he's trying to get there, but he doesn't always get there. But when he does, he's he's money. That's
that's when he just rips the shot by and Lindy Ruff explained a little bit. He kind of said to
me, goes, well, did you ask him? I go, yeah, he goes, well, what did you say? I told him and then
Lindy Ruff kind of explained a little bit that, you know, Quinn does, you know, watch the goal tenders.
And for a couple of shootouts where he's been successful, he's gone to the blocker side and over
the blocker. So now he's going to anticipate the, the goal tenders who watch film of him, they know
that's what he's done for the past two or three shootouts. So what does he do? He goes under the blocker,
you know, and scores the goal, knowing that that's what they, so it's almost like point counterpoint.
It's like, okay, you know, I've shown the goal tenders this a little bit. They scout too. So they're
going to probably be expecting me to do this. So I'm going to switch it up a little bit. And,
you know, and he just has that pinpoint shot when he gets in there and is able to score.
Thompson's percentage isn't all that great, but Lindy Ruff, you will lead off with him usually,
let him go, and then let Quinn go second. And he said, talk likes to go third. So he let's him go
third. The only thing that he goes, the problem with tuck going third is sometimes he doesn't get
to shoot. That's possible. So he said, and then Osslin would have been fourth because Osslin in
Rochester was really good at it. And he put on a really sweet move. The first NHL one he got.
It was a really, really good move. And the second one, the goal tender, I believe,
poke checked him. And he wasn't expecting it. But Osslin probably would have gone fourth.
He just said he was between him and Norris to go fourth if that would have come up.
Norris has a shootout goal this year for them himself. So I'm interested in team shootouts
that Saber's 4-0, New Jersey is 4-0. Anaheim is 8-0 in shootouts, which is why they've been in
first place. I'm not sure if they are right now, but they went to the top of a really tight
division on the strength of winning every one of their eight shootouts. There are a point ahead
of Vegas and two ahead of Edmonton. Rangers 3-0, Ottawa 3-0 in shootouts. Utah has not had a shootout,
zero and zero. And pitch Saber should go to a shootout against Anaheim on Sunday. That should
be exciting. And break the tie. And Pittsburgh is 1-10. Wow. That's interesting. They're still in
a playoffs, but I mean, it's 10 loser points or whatever. Right. Right. One in 10. If you split those,
they remember Yager basically refused to take shootouts after a while. He just wasn't good at it.
And he just said to have somebody else do it. There's no point. We'll have to mention Jeff
Skinner here because he maybe he's maybe going to decades. He was really bad for the Sabers.
And people would be wise in Skinner's shoot. If you look at his percentage, it's like other than
the guys were all for one, it is just not good. It's not his thing. I always wondered if it was
like the policy after a while. It's just like not in his contract necessarily, but there's an
understanding here. And then I always wanted that we had a bat, Joe and I, and whether he would
ever take another one, even on another team. And it hasn't happened. Is he still playing?
He's not caught on anywhere. He's nowhere. Yeah. The sharks waved him to release him, and he did
not catch on before the trade deadline. Man, I'm just going to have to settle up with Joe across
the the board here and just get a few. Yeah, it might be over. Yeah.
Um, no, Bulldog and I talked about this earlier, Paul, lying another win after the loss to
Washington with Luke and into one. Uh, no reason to change the rotation here, right?
No, I don't think so. I mean, typical hockey. Luke and then let's in seven and wins.
And then he let's in two as a great game and loses. It's just crazy. But Lindy Ruff talked about
it too. And I agree with him. In the seven goals, he said it was his teammates were awful around him.
He goes five of them. Nobody stopping because if you want to argue about one or two of them that
maybe can get a big save, maybe, but he said the other five, he goes, I'm not blaming him at all.
He goes, I actually like wanted to keep him in the fight because his team was fighting to win that
game. And he goes, I wanted him to fight. And he goes, he did. I like, he goes, I liked the fight I
saw in him. And then he came back with a really good game against Washington.
Okay, you've got to leave a little minute or two here for Iowa State basketball, uh, Paul second
seed. You've got to be pretty pumped. Boy, uh, the big 12 tournament semi-files against Arizona.
What a game that was. I mean, that both teams, I think, made their last three or four shots. Just,
you know, go ahead, tie the game. Go ahead, tie the game. And just pressure, pressure shots.
And then the guy comes down with seconds left. The MVP of the big 12 who had already just made one
with great defensive coverage on him. But he's a great player. That's why he's the MVP of the league.
And he somehow made the shot to beat Iowa State. And I said to Brian Kosey, like, I can't be mad.
What are you going to do? The defense was fantastic. The MVP beat him. And this is the number two team
in the nation. And there are some people think still the two of them both could wind up in the
final four. Not Iowa State's never been there before. So, uh, you know, we'll see about that.
But at least they showed Arizona that they could hang with them. Maybe we'll see you in the
Odyssey tournaments, uh, the brackets. I, you will not be. I can still change this. If you do play
and pick them, you will not be the only one. No, I do not do the, to me, a bracket is just a complete
donation. So I'd rather be in a thing where you get two numbers for every single game in the
NCAA tournament. And that, that, that is much better. Rob, Rob and I and Brian and other people,
we, well, just for fun, you know, we, we just, uh, do it together and see which one of his bet,
one of his is better. If the score just lands on a certain number, you mean? Yeah. It's,
it's like a squares pool. Yeah. Okay. Okay. All right. Well, hope, hope you get out there tomorrow.
As I said, you, you, you, other than you don't get the play in games, but you're in every single game.
Right. All right, Paul. We hope, uh, travel goes well tomorrow. Well, and we'll connect with you
maybe at this time tomorrow. If, if you're honest, yeah, we're going to give it a shot of five
thirty in the morning. So we'll see if I'm in the air by five thirty. All right. Gidey up.
There's Paul Hamilton on the western hotline. His appearance is on WGR brought to you by
Relax Honda. Relax. We got this Iowa State is in St. Louis, not the campus.
Iowa State is in St. Louis for Tennessee State that'll be Friday at around two fifty.
Guessing the poll knows that that's their first game. All right. I'm taking the I versus I.
I for an I Iowa State in Illinois. Okay.
Okay. For, for what? Exactly. You mean for the national championship? Oh, really? Yes.
All right. Right there with it. You're all right. All right. Wow.
Jeez. Yep. That escalated. Possibly. I will hear things between now and Thursday and have
different ideas. Because right now, I know very, very little about this, these teams.
So subject to change. Go drive around and listen to mad dog somewhere.
Well, I do have to drive back and forth to work for one thing. I was thinking a little more
than that. I mean, but yeah, that was a five and a half hour drive yesterday from northern Jersey.
I had one. This isn't I don't have any time for it anyway, but my guy there, the GPS took me off
a highway. No boy. I hate when that happens. And I decided to trust it. I worked out. Okay.
I mean, I had no issues. I just don't know what I avoided. Oh, I see. I see.
You know, didn't I didn't find out, but it didn't seem like it really added significant time to
you. No, no. Okay. All right. I drove up through skinny atlas instead of
in the Syracuse. All right. Maybe there was something.
My guy though has a mind of its own sometimes. I don't know. I do question it.
Says get off the highway. I at least think to myself, I'm not sure I should. Yeah.
But I am the type to just like, okay, and I will. Yeah. If they told you to jump off a bridge
with me, maybe I am the type to ignore it and then swear a lot when I realize I should have paid
the advice. Yes. This is WGR. I'm one of those people who will happily eat steak at eggs any time

I'm Brian. I work at UnitedHealthcare. So Brian, why do you care?
I care because I don't want to leave anybody behind. I oversee one of the biggest resource center
in UnitedHealthcare. I see people walked in in my office every day, just like my parents.
They have no idea about the healthcare. I feel like they're my uncles, aunties. I treat
as people's life family. I'm Brian and I'm committed to care.
