Pharmacy Staff Face Rising Abuse, Violence

0:00On March 26, pharmacy staff across the UK are facing a sharp rise in abuse from frustrated patients, including verbal attacks, racist slurs, death, threats, and even physical violence. A survey of more than 3,000 pharmacies revealed that over half dealt with verbal abuse in the last six months, with three-quarter seeing it. At least weekly and one-fifth facing it daily, these incidents often stem from issues beyond staff control, like prescription delays, medicine shortages, and strict NHS eligibility rules. Racist, religious, and other discriminatory abuse is common too, adding to the daily stress for workers on the front lines. Owners shared scary stories, from patients threatening them with screwdrivers over unavailable meds to vandals hurling bricks through windows twice in, one week nearly hitting staff. Spitting, shoplifting, turned violent, and smash counters have become routine, leaving teens feeling vulnerable. Many say police response is slow compared to other NHS workers, with no quick visits
