We’re LIVE from LECOM Park in Bradenton for another North Shore Nine Spring Training check-in, presented by FanDuel. DiNardo and Doug soak in the vibe at the ballpark and dive into what they’re seeing up close, starting with Mike Clevenger taking the ball and what his role could look like as camp rolls on.
From there, the conversation turns into the bigger picture stuff that actually matters right now: how this pitching staff could shake out, what the Pirates need most from their arms, and why certain roster decisions might come down to fit as much as talent. The guys also hit on the lineup groups we’re expecting to see plenty of this season, what’s standing out early in camp, and a few spring-storyline trends that are already starting to feel real.
If you’re following the daily grind of spring training and want the on-the-ground perspective from Bradenton, this one’s for you.
In this episode:

Yo, yo, yo! Welcome to at Nortra 9 presented by Fandoo, I'm your host, Anthony Denardo.
With me, we have Doug, the man of the people, Dougy Fresh.
Hello! How's it going, Doug?
Great training, it's awesome.
Our second week on his first blood, you still stuck with the, you know, mild tri-routine.
But look, things are happening, the bucko banner guys are here pop,
nothing is standing right over there.
Yeah?
I think he's locked in listening.
I read into Jim Stanley.
Maybe we should hope he's not.
Maybe he should hope he's not.
Yeah, yeah.
But no, man, it's a beautiful day for baseball.
Whether he's turned, it's feeling like spring training.
I'm not going to brag and boast, but I'm just going to say,
when the week two people came down, the weather came out to be really, really nice.
So we know who the better crew is.
Well, you brought the good weather, I'm not going to, you brought it right over from Jacksville, I guess.
I might clement your starting today and his nickname is Sunshine, I've learned today.
So there you go.
There you go.
There you go, I love it.
But yeah, so again, it is week two of spring training for us.
We have a really solid lineup today.
Some interesting pictures.
We know the luck of brew.
We talked about like the fifth star of the battle in there.
Carmaginski being part of it.
He's going to pitch today.
I mean, someone we didn't really talk about was like Michael Clevinder.
And theoretically, like you could say he's in that.
I really know what he's going to be battling for.
Maybe it's rotation.
Maybe it's the whole pen.
Of course, he's a minor league inviting.
Not on the Major League roster in the sense, but he's fighting for something.
Some depth there.
So it's going to be interesting to see what he can do today.
But yeah, I mean, it's actually a really solid lineup also.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, the first.
I mean, it's funny because for years, we've complained about, you know,
everything from about four or five six on was pretty bad.
And the first six guys in this lineup are big parts of this team.
And then Henry Davis is seven.
And hopefully he's a big part of the team.
Sure.
Yeah, these are, you know, it's, it's so hard and it's so Zuna.
It's Brian Reynolds.
It's a mango misleading off.
I mean, we, we, this starting lineup or that portion of the starting lineup,
we expect to see a lot this year.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, it's, again, it's starting to feel more real.
I'm sure they're only going to play that, you know, four,
and he's five.
Yeah.
But you know, baseball is right around the corner.
And the buyers are getting ready.
Yeah, absolutely.
So kicking off.
As you mentioned, Jake Mangos will play center field.
We have, you know, Mangome.
You have written a law.
Brian Reynolds.
I don't know her.
Marcelo Zuna.
Spencer Horowitz.
Uh, potentially maybe his last game or one of the very few before he goes off to the WBC as well.
So it's nice to get some action from him this week.
And then yeah, Henry Davis a catcher.
Uh, and then he will belt as and.
Um, I'll let you know Williams as shortstop today.
So you said it's very top heavy.
The last two probably, I mean, they're funny for roster spot.
At least Valdez to some degree.
Alika probably not, but he's going to have a lot of play time with, you know, the WBC coming up.
He's going to get opportunities.
We're going to see a lot of them.
Hey, look, you know, the kids are great fielder.
There's always a room for him.
You can't hit, can't hit a lick.
Um, but.
You know, you can always, you know, it's always nice to have someone that could be a slick fielder.
You know, especially like somebody goes down.
You know, you can't replace that bat necessarily.
But if you can replace the glove and make the place and help the pitching stuff out.
There could be a spot for me.
I'm sure he'll be up for some time.
Maybe he didn't see the field any time last year.
You know, this year they definitely improved the roster.
So, but again, he could be some death there.
Um, but I do want to go to the pitching.
So again, it was starting off today with my manager and the car managers is coming in.
Um, before we do so, of course, to tell you all this episode is brought to you by IQ bar.

So again, cleverger is going to start today, which I do find a little bit interesting because, you know, with car managers come in there.
It was told that the pirates are interested in seeing what he could do as a starter again.
Um, so again, the roles are kind of reversed today.
Not that it means much of the spring, right, but it's cleverger going to get the start today.
Right. I mean, yeah, they're both probably going to pitch pre innings.
Um, I don't think it matters who's starting who's coming in next.
I know that the cleverger signing didn't really move the needle.
And if it did, maybe it was in a bit of a negative way.
But two years ago, he was a pretty good picture.
He's had a pretty good career.
I think it's just 29 pictures last year, right?
You're not, whatever 13 go North are not going to be the only 13 pictures of pitch all year.
You're, you know, it's, it's, you know, it's so funny.
We'll claim some flavor and everyone.
Oh, why are they taking these bombs?
Because you need 30 years to get through a sea.
And if Clevver can, you know, do sort of the Andrew Heeney role like if he makes six starts.
And you know, six somewhat, you know, effective starts before he falls apart or something.
They'll probably be needed.
It'll be good to have that.
I don't know.
I'm not expecting to put out a side young campaign.
If he pitches, it's most likely going to be in the bull corner as a first starter.
But he, you know, he's, he's had a pretty decent career.
Uh, anybody, something's up like 66 and 40 or something in his career.
Um, we might, we might be able to resume with the prior scoring more runs.
He might not have to be perfect.
That'll be a refreshing change.
You know, I want to see what he does.
You know, the Pirates obviously, you know, finish me to release has enough faith that I bring him into camp.
Let's see what happens.
Yeah.
And I think that you hit the nail on the head there as far as like death.
I mean, you need pitching.
29 pitchers.
That's a lot of guys, right?
So, you know, when you find, you know, you always on Twitter, right?
Some kind of, you know, I was like, oh, we're all so inspired.
I was like, well, no, you need these guys.
Every day it does.
And like your point, I was Clevver.
It's not often you get a guy that cheap who wasn't that long ago.
He was really good.
I mean, he came up with Cleveland, who was a stunt of a picture.
You know, entry is really derailed his career, but you go back just as recent as 2023.
He had 131 innings with the White Sox, a 377 ERA.
I mean, this was guy who was hovering right around a three R a three ERA every year with Cleveland in his prime.
So like, you know, the talent is there.
There's no expectations.
He's coming in.
He may make the team maybe a star or maybe a bullpen guy.
We don't know, but it could be a part of the scene that helps like you mentioned.
Right. Right.
I mean, it's, it's more than likely he will pitch for the pirates this year.
Yeah, absolutely.
Absolutely.
More than likely he will pitch.
How much how effective, you know, time will tell.
But let's see what he can do.
Let's see.
I mean, let's see if he looks healthy.
That's the important thing.
Honestly, when the guy has been healthy, he's been very good pitcher.
Pires can, and you know, the pirates traded pitching death.
And we lost Mike Burrows and you know, I'm not sure the Antoine Kelly.
We were talking about this morning.
Quite ready to ride to the rescue.
I don't know what her key.
He has.
And I don't want the kids kids to starter.
Yeah.
That's my personal thing.
He lights out the bullpen.
And we need lights out in the bullpen.
And so, yeah, let's go.
It's again, there's a very good chance that he gets.
You know, has multiple appearances for the pirates this year.
For sure.
Let's see what he has.
Let's see what he can do.
For sure.
And then you don't get whoops here on the mound and.
Well, so it's going to be interesting to watch him regardless of how much pitch it.
But, you know, next up, it's kind of like you mentioned, there's definitely some.
It's not because it's controversy.
But I mean, I should be able to entertain him being a throatist.
We just say, hey, this will works being the bullpen.
I'm fun entertaining at this point in time again.
If he's a starter, he's good.
It only helps even more.
Right.
I mean, the people I want to talk on Jared Jones, like, oh, he's a bullpen arm.
I mean, his value comes in the rotation.
You can give you that type of production in the rotation.
You can be very valuable.
And like the same thing exists, obviously, for.
Caramaginski, like if he's going to be a good pitcher, the value is most.
You know, productive in the rotation.
Right.
I'm just not so sure.
He will.
Right.
I mean, what we've seen so far is that he's not very good after his second or third.
Right.
So if he, look, if he could stretch himself out, if he could be a five inning pitcher,
because that's what you need to be in today's baseball, especially as a five number five starter,
if he could be a fit that happy to see him in the starting role.
But from what, you know, we've seen his splits as a starter, not so good as a bullpen pitcher lights out.
But he deserves every opportunity.
I don't want anybody being in the jobs.
If he can, if he can win the job and then if he can produce, fine.
Somebody else for the bullpen.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
And again, we've talked about this morning.
Since it's a lovely, great.
And we add a splitter.
He worked on his pitch sequencing, the curve ball is taking half.
So, you know, there's a different pitcher in Caramaginski.
That's how he feels made the parts of viewing him.
This year, it was the last year.
So with the battle, the five starter with the battle of depth.
And his sense of like, maybe that he could be using both of these.
Maybe he's a real, in some sense, he was a bullpened, a bullkeye.
But at any rate, he will be, I'm like, fuck your right.
Like, he will be a part of this in a big way.
He's going to be counted on this year.
He'll be on the roster opening day.
Look, I'm thrilled that he wants to start.
I'm thrilled that he wants to start.
I'm thrilled that he wants to start.
You know, what you're saying, Doug?
I mean, you want dogs in your team.
You guys, you want people that want to do things.
Right.
He's like, I don't want to be the sixth, seventh inning guy, right?
Yeah.
Exactly.
I get it.
He said a little box.
Right.
If he, I mean, it's simple.
If he can do it, I have added carbon.
But, you know, let's find out for sure.
Let's, let's, let's, let's not give out any jobs.
Let's, let's, let's, this isn't no orange slices.
No jobs.
There.
I was going to say, oh, we know your, your line, right?
No orange slices.
Um, but obviously they might not be that great here anyway.
Yeah.
So it's all good.
But anyways, so getting to the lineup, you know, as we mentioned,
it's a pretty solid one with Mangum,
Lao, Reynolds, or Herno, Zuna, Horowitz.
And actually, I mean, all of them are pretty,
pretty much producing this, this spring as well.
From what you've seen.
You know, this is a second time seeing something first,
others.
Right.
I mean, my favorite thing to see this spring is
O'Neill Cruz get to first base, Walker single.
And then steal and then get knocked in one of the guys.
It's happened a couple of times.
Um, and I love O'Neill Cruz's approach so far this spring.
We don't know if that's what it's going to be doing all year.
But I mean, right now, he looks like a guy that's going to score 100 plus
runs.
He's going to steal 50 plus bases.
And you know, yesterday he did a home run.
That's, that's still in there.
But I wanted, I wanted him to get away from only focusing on
throwing up stat cast.
Right.
And, you know, for two, you need actual production.
He doesn't have to be the MVP, but he's got to be better
than he was last year.
Yep.
So it's Cruz playing for the McKinney and the WBC.
We're not going to see him at all anymore this week.
Uh, so again, like with these comes opportunity.
Right.
Right.
So thank you.
We'll be makes our bills today.
And obviously he's before that trade.
And uh, yeah, he's a big part of this team as well.
Probably more like the fourth out builder.
But the acting play all of the positions.
I'm also like, I'm very interested to see what Jake Megan can do.
You know, things that don't matter too much, but.
I want to know what that bat really can be.
Listen, he hit 297 last year.
I don't know if he replicate that, but he is.
A guy that gets on base.
He's not swing.
He is a different look.
He doesn't strike.
I have a lot.
We, you know, we have a lot of big swingers.
A lot of strikeout guys today's baseball is filled with strikeout.
So, uh, it would just be nice to have somebody that's focused on.
I mean, I love what he said.
When Tyler interview, I touched the ball and I run.
Yes.
And, uh, and we've seen that.
And, uh, he's been a fun guy to watch.
He's been a great guy to talk to, watch him interact with the fans.
But he's going to get a ton of playing time.
Right.
You were going to, like Brian Reynolds, you know, I see Brian Reynolds,
D.H.ing at least once a week.
Um, you know, I see our own plans of first base.
There's going to be an opportunity for Jake Van Gogh.
And I want to see him seize it.
And, uh, you know, and then light it up.
So, right.
Right.
Right.
Um, outside of that, again, revenge game.
Van Gogh.
As it's off in the race.
Brandon Lau.
I'll also get out of Lika in there for the race.
Yeah.
Three out of nine.
It's a wrench for revenge for them.
So, with that being said,
the fans who overrun this game is they didn't have runs.
What do you expect?
This out of care.
I know it's spring.
You know, I mean, it's been funny because we thought,
you know, a couple times the wind blowing out.
The wind's blowing in.
It is.
And we saw this because it was knocking the ball down.
Um, but, you know, it's really hard.
Just, you know, by the fifth inning,
it's a home to the classic eyes.
Right.
You know, we saw the young bucks.
The day it was that generated all the offense.
And it was in the fifth and sixth inning.
That sort of thing.
So I'm going to take the under.
And when you see the result,
you'll probably realize there's a recent duck doesn't gamble anymore.
But I didn't want to bring it up because it's funny,
because I mentioned the same thing.
It's like that one was blowing in hard.
You see, Reynolds was connecting.
And that ball was just.
Right.
It was.
Oh, yeah.
And it would die.
You know, 10 feet behind.
Right.
It was going to go wrong.
So I know we talked about batting practice.
You think it's to see too much to take away again.
They're hitting the ball pretty well.
But things were just dying.
There was no like true.
Like, oh, look out.
Oh, that barely hit the warning track now.
Um, but anyway, Reynolds was hitting the ball.
Pretty well.
Henry Davis was kind of spotty.
What I saw.
But anyways, yeah, it's spring training.
We're week two.
Trying to really ramp up.
Um,
That's all I really.
I really have to say.
I guess anything.
No, it's kind of.
Well,
this is about time.
Actually happened.
It's speculating on what might happen.
So.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Let's play ball.
I'm excited.
So again, I'm here full week.
You're here the full week.
You're here the full week.
Right.
Uh, on the post game wrap up.
We'll have Neil and Nate doing it for you.
So tune in later.
Um,
I'll sign of that.
Hey, if you're at the ballpark.
Yeah.
Say hello.
Yeah.
We got coosies.
We got stickers.
We got Cody.
That's enough reason to come around.
Come see Cody.
Well,
come here, Cody.
I'm here.
I'm here.
That's it.
So we'll be back in this more content.
Let's go watch these buckos play some ball.
Till then.
Bye.
