My name's Charlie Walter, formerly of 957, the game in the Bay Area, also CBS News Bay
Area, coming at you after the Warriors, snap a five-game skid.
It's the Dubs, 125, and the Wizards, 117.
We'll talk about that skid, how the Warriors were able to get it done, specifically attacking,
scoring in the paint, Anthony Melton's play, from the mid-range, Chris Depp's porzingus's
career high.
These are all topics, and what they mean for the Warriors immediate and further future,
I guess, talking next year.
And Matt Kulski joins the program today to break it all down.
Kulski, the Warriors are able to get a season high in the paint, 68 points, as Chris Depp's
porzingus leads the way with 30 on what is a little bit of a revenge tour.
You look at who the Warriors play on this road trip, already to New York.
They've got Atlanta coming up, who he just came from.
They have, I mean, the list goes on and on.
He plays Washington's old team tonight.
The Celtics are coming up on this road trip.
It's everyone but Detroit, essentially.
Chris Depp's just a time lapse through his life, and the Wizards version of him.
I can't say I remember much of it with, with, it was great with the Wizards, actually.
That was, he and Russ, that was, he and Russ together, right?
I think so, yes.
That's the answer, right?
It was just a cup of coffee, but it was, um, it was one year, but it was a really good
year, as I remember it.
Let's see here.
Well, he had a good game tonight in the homecoming.
That's for sure.
Okay, so he was traded mid season from Dallas, played 17 games, but then, yeah, his best
full season was age 27 season, 22, 23 with Washington, 65 games, 23 points, eight and a half
rebounds, three assists and a block and a half a night, shot 50, 39, 85.
So, yeah, good memories in Washington, and that seemed to play out really well tonight.
Yeah, but it wasn't just him getting points around the rim.
In fact, he did a lot of it from the charity stripe, which I mean is getting to the rim
in the first place to get the fouls called.
He took 14 of them and hit 13 of them.
You'll take that from your big man with some of the free throw shooting we've seen over
the years, and that kind of picks up where Jimmy's left off to a certain degree, but
it was even the smaller guards getting around the rim, Gary Payton.
He's been everywhere as of late.
He cuts at the right time.
Guy Santos is everywhere around the rim.
Uh, this team for as bad as they've been, they can be fun to watch at times.
When they don't just chuck up a lot of threes, they didn't shoot a ton of them today.
They didn't make many at all, nine of 32.
They just kind of went to the formula and that is Washington's terrible.
There's a reason why they're terrible.
Let's attack their weaknesses.
Alex saw who's their rim protector isn't even in there.
And, uh, you know, Trey Young, he had a pretty nice game.
I think you could say offensively in his 21 minutes.
But aside from that, you know, Kula Bale will Ryleys a nice young prospect.
They have some decent young prospects.
They just a don't fit together at the moment and be there.
They're literally 20 years old.
That is a very young team that could be warriors.
Esk and a little bit if we're trending towards this direction with the warriors,
just have all vets essentially.
Yeah.
I mean, listen, this wizard's, I've done some stats work on the wizards this season.
And they, they have all these stats about, you know, they've started the youngest
starting lineup ever this season.
They have more players under 22 or under 23, maybe than any other team in the NBA.
Those players have played as many minutes as, you know, under 23 players in the NBA.
It's all young guys.
I mean, fits and Kalena were trying to sell us Anthony Gill as the team veteran today.
Tim Roy was doing it on the radio too.
Cause I went back to back.
I was, I was going through Stone's town getting a little haircut in there.
It's tough, Dennis.
And, uh, yeah, I mean, I went from TV to radio.
And they were both hyping up Anthony Gill, this guy would be on 25 other teams
in the league right now in the starting lineup.
This is a player that everyone needs.
Maybe he would be on the other teams, but he would be the 13th man on most teams.
And he's a, he's an important 31 minute tonight veteran for, look, the wizard stink.
There's 16 and 51 for a reason that's who they are.
But that's kind of who the warriors are at the moment.
So any win, as we've seen over the last couple of weeks, any win is a good win right now.
Um, and, and this is a particularly good win, not without questions.
Cause there are some, but you said it.
For me, when Steph Curry is unavailable, the approach has so often been completely wrong.
And focused on getting up three point shots.
And that's just not who this team is.
I mean, look at the starting lineup alone.
Pods is probably the best three point.
I guess ghee is the best three point shooter in the starting lineup really, right?
And he's not exactly Steph Curry.
So you just, it's one thing if you hit five of your first seven, right?
And then you get hot when you're clanking from three point range,
which has happened so much in the absence of Steph Curry, you have to stop doing it.
And tonight was the one of the first nights where it felt like
that clicked for everybody.
There's no doubt in my mind.
There've been other nights in this season when they're shooting like crap from three
and Steve Curry is yelling at everybody.
Can you just take it to the rim, please?
Now that's an easier cell against the Washington team with Alex are not available
because, you know, there had no room for that angel Reese's brother,
as he was repeatedly called was the best rim protection they had in this game.
So it was an easy solution here.
But I still think that's the solution even when it's harder.
I mean, there's only one victor, Wemba Nyama, and I guess Rudy go bare,
but most teams don't have an absolute death sentence at the rim.
So this team is not good enough to shoot threes all night.
They've got to attack.
And tonight was a perfect example of how at the very least you can score when you do
that. Now, are they going to be able to defend the best teams than the league
with the current roster?
Who knows?
But they can score if they do the right things and they did that tonight.
Congrats.
The Steve Curry becomes the 28th coach to reach 600 regular season wins big milestone
for him.
I'll put you on the spot, Golsky.
Can you name all 28?
I'm joking.
I would hope not.
I would have to question your priorities in life with your kids and your
not only if you could.
Yeah, not only am I not quite that level of sicko, but like I have the worst head
for that kind of stuff, man.
I do not remember the one that could run through the presidents in right 65 seconds.
He'd be like, you list this as grand and then you go into Rutherford B Hayes.
And I'd be like, you're pulling out Rutherford B Hayes.
I could do random trivia, but I can't do listening things or remember numbers or
presidents or the like those games where people are like, you'll be surprised.
How few states you can name when you just try to name all 50.
Oh, I'm good with that.
Well, man, I'm good with the capital.
Oh, no, I can't do any of that stuff.
None of it.
I'm good at figuring things out more than I am in memorizing things as it turns out.
Yeah.
If anyone ever needs like the capital, you know, they're like, oh, quick, life or death
situation, capital wide, I mean, I'm like, shia, I got it.
You know, you get the right board on Jeopardy.
You can make some money with that skill, Chuck.
You never know, man.
You never know.
Every skill set is his worth having.
They say, uh, anyway, skill sets wizards real quick.
I want to spend 30 seconds on the wizards.
What are they doing?
Getting tray young Anthony Davis and all the young talent they have.
Like what do you like what they're doing?
I don't know what they're doing.
I don't either.
If their goal is to finish six in the east with tray young and Anthony Davis,
then I don't like what they're doing.
If they're positioned at the deadline is we can get two potentially valuable
players for pennies on the dollar and we'll see what happens.
No, I don't hate it.
It's not like they didn't give anything up for these guys really.
And they don't really like no, and they become trade bait, you know,
right.
Team like they're looking for Anthony Davis next deadline.
Warriors come calling.
Hey, we're already old.
Not tray young, but somebody's going to want Anthony Davis.
Somebody's going to be willing to take that risk.
So we'll see.
Uh, I don't, I don't know why you, yeah, for now, that's what I would say.
I would not be enamored with the idea of tray young moving forward with a young
team that I would want.
Other guys getting touches and shots.
Yeah, interesting position they're in right now.
Let's talk about Chris has poor Zingas play.
Let's solo in on that.
What he meant to the Warriors tonight.
And what he means the rest of the season and whether there is a beyond that
questions answer, don't have a lot of them words destroy Jimmy and Domino.
I know Jimmy drink is great wine.

Let's get this five hour energy out of here.
Let's talk about the energy edition that is Christapps for Zingas.
When you're watching a Warriors game against the Wizards and you kind of locked
into your brain, that the dubs are going to be either ninth or 10th in the Western
conference and they're likely going to have to play the Oklahoma City Thunder.
If they do advance past the play and or then you have the play and talk,
you lose, could you potentially get a lottery pick out of it?
That's for another day.
But Christapps for Zingas is an ISO performer.
He's someone that you're watching right now as more of a win loss than the actual
score indicates because this is someone that look, Colski.
You said that Jonathan Caminga was really your only ticket to getting better.
You held on to that take for a long time.
And if that take proved to be true, that ticket's now Christapps for Zingas,
who's really your only chance to get better moving forward.
He's got talent.
He could play.
He can add a lot of things that this team needs.
And we still haven't seen him out there with Steph Curry.
Definitely not with Jimmy Butler.
Right.
So let me just quickly address the avenues to get better part because I think
that's one of the really fascinating parts of this.
We all know for Zingas is a free agent at the end of the season.
Now I suppose there are sign and trade possibilities.
But for that to be worthwhile, someone else has to want to give him a substantial
enough contract to make it worth it.
By the same token, you have first round draft picks, but if you're not trading
Dremond and he's got a player option, then it's hard to get to the money you
would need to acquire a really good player, right?
So it probably is true that you're most obvious anyway.
And, you know, least dots to connect path to improve is to have a healthy
Christophe's pro Zingas on your team.
And I think tonight was his best game as a warrior.
I don't understand exactly what's happening besides obviously he's only
playing in one game of back-to-back.
You know, he started the other night and played 22 minutes off the bench tonight
and played 25 or whatever like, I don't I don't say I don't think they have to
play him.
So they're easing them in.
I wonder how it would look in a seven game series.
Like, is this someone that would have to sit out a game in a seven game series?
Or is jerky jerkyness just because of where we are, where the dubs are in the
standings and it only makes sense to do it.
There's no back-to-backs in the playoffs.
You know, that's something they've been counting on all year with the
whorford and Melton.
And I think look, here's what I would say about the future with poor Zingas.
I don't think it's worth us sitting here going back and forth about all the things
of potentially healthy Christopps where Zingas would bring anyone who's watched him
over any period of time knows the answer to that.
It's all about whether he can stay healthy and anyone's guess is as good as mine on that.
But what I will say is this, if I am trying to paint the picture of a best-case scenario
for next year's Golden State Warriors, okay?
Forget the specific players for a second.
Besides, obviously, Steph Curry, all right.
The best-case scenario, in my view, at this point, especially given the way we saw things
develop with injuries this year and Steph in particular has an overuse injury at 38 now years old.
I would be fine with some guys who don't play in back-to-backs.
I would be fine with some, as I said early in this season, before it went off the rails,
aggressive management of old guys who you simply are screwed if they're hurt, right?
This year, they did not manage that aggressively enough. I would argue, and right now they're
extremely screwed. Okay, that's what happened. They got screwed because the old guys got hurt.
It might happen anyway, but I do think you decrease the chances by maybe Steph doesn't play in
back-to-backs. Maybe Jimmy doesn't play in back-to-backs, and maybe it's Horford and Pursingius
alternating halves of a back-to-back, right? And to me, the goal is the five or six seed.
I am aiming. I don't care if I actually end up having the talent to be third or fourth.
I am aiming for five or six and saying health is more important to me than home court advantage,
and if I have to sacrifice a few games at the altar of keeping the team healthy, so be it. In my
mind, that is going to be the situation with the Warriors roster, whether an oft-injured center,
like Christophe's Pursingius is on it or not, because that's how they're going to have to treat
Jimmy Butler when he gets back. That's how they ought to treat Steph Curry at age 38, you know,
going on 39. That's how, if Dremond is here at 37, that's how he should be treated, and Horford,
and if they can somehow get Melton back here, right?
Their head coach wants a 72 game schedule, so it works perfectly. So the 60 games is kind of
your benchmark, right? Or even less than that? 60 to 65, I would say, is your benchmark, right? You
take 15 or so back-to-backs off, and then another five to seven games on purpose. Your goal is 60 to
65 games, award season be damned, and if you can win 40 of those 60 and get, you know, 10 wins
out of the other 22, you're a 51 team. It's pretty good. To me, that is the formula for next year,
because I just can't imagine any scenario where it's better than that. For it to be better than
that, I think you would have to somehow add someone that makes Steph Curry not the best player on
the team. And you'd be getting rid of draft picks. Yeah, you would be everything. Yeah, you would be
looking at a completely different situation than the one that the Warriors have already put
themselves in. Now, there's comments that are flowing and saying, Guy has been the only bright spot
for this bleak season for Zirk Monk. I would argue that in a bleak season, a night like
Chris Dabbs had tonight looking healthy. That has to be exciting. I think Anthony Melton going for
27 in today's game, like there is an avenue where the Warriors could somehow return Chris Dabbs
and Melton next season. And those two combined for 57 points in the game today, that doesn't include
Jimmy. It doesn't include Steph. It doesn't include if you have Al returning,
Peyton's playing some of the best basketball of his career. Like, I know it's old. I know it's
I mean, you're talking a championship run would be 15 months from now. They're that much more
brittle. It's just hard to see with all the injuries. But at least personnel, you kind of like what
you're seeing there in a glass very, very full. It's over tipping with optimism and some would
question whether I'm on drugs type of thing. Yeah, but I think it's like again, unless you're at
unless you find a way to add a honest level player or you're ready to move on from Steph Curry,
and I I wouldn't even consider the second one. And I think the first one is a real long shot. Then
like I think that's the right goal. You can have the championship goal, but it like the
the Wizards could have announced the championship goal this season. It wouldn't have meant anything,
you know what I mean? And if you go into next season with basically the team you have now except
Steph is healthy and Jimmy's coming back in a couple months, it would be ridiculous to suggest
that like the honest to God's goal is a title, but you still set the bar as high as you can. And
if this is where the rubber really meets the road, if exactly the Warriors roster right now,
except everybody was healthy, including Jimmy, right? If exactly that roster went into the playoffs
as the fifth or sixth seed, I wouldn't pick them to win the title, but I wouldn't be entirely shocked
if they did, right? I wouldn't expect it, but they would have that puncher's chance that we were
talking about at the beginning of this season. And I really think that's the best they can hope for.
That's all you can hope for at this point. Yeah, who would get the, remember when Jason Terry got
the Larry O'Brien tatted on his bicep and then they turned around and seven months later
took down LeBron Bosch, Wade Allen, that entire Miami team. Don't know if Allen was on that team yet,
Aronius, a relevant, a relevant, who would do that for the Warriors? Would it be, you know,
Santos calls his shot with the LeBron Viva. I don't think that's key. Man, man, you know,
at the rate he's gone over the first few years, maybe it's pods. Yeah.
So, do you imagine how mad Warrior fans would be? Oh, God. They'd have to back it up at that point.
And we get a riot down on Broadway. Oh, dude. Anyways, 125, 117, the Warriors win this game,
when the program continues, we got to talk about the Anthony Melton, his play in today's game,
his mid-range jumper, all the good, the Anthony Melton is brought. And why I still believe that
there's Anthony Melton in the Warriors future, these two, it works. We'll talk about that coming.
Forget that. We chance. Why are you starting with that question? We got four championships.

back to Lockdown Warriors. The Anthony Melton goes for 27 points. He was not falling in love with
the three ball at all today. He took a couple of them and then realized I can get into this paint.
There's no one stopping me on the perimeter. They really don't have point of attack, tough defenders
on the perimeter. I'm just going to blow right by him. Get to my mid-range spot, pull up, get to the
rim, throw one down occasionally. He's done that, you know, like once a month. They'll just throw
down a dunk that you didn't know, Anthony Melton had in his arsenal. And he finished with 27, man.
12-17. Got to the line a couple of times. Three to be exact. Hit them all. He had five rebounds for
assists, a couple of steals. We're talking Anthony Melton and the potential contract of Christaphe
for Zingas is extremely friendly with what you're getting right now. Now Melton obviously would go up
for Zingas. Who knows whether his dollar amount would go up or down depending on what he does the
next month or so, I would say. But Melton's one of those guys that's going to earn himself a contract.
What do you think the chances are that that contract is with the Warriors?
Oh, you're putting me on the spot. I don't think it's a good chance.
I would have to look at that. You don't think they could hit him up with their exception?
Melton mid-level. Well, I don't think they can extend him, right? Because I believe
even off a minimum, the extension has to conform to a certain percentage of the previous contract if you
don't, if he doesn't actually hit the market. And boy, after the season he's having, if he does
actually hit the market, I think he might be out of the Warriors price range. And he's hitting the
market. We had this chat with Pinkus. It literally would make zero cents. Even if he wanted to extend
with the Warriors, he would get the pay raise by just going into the market first. So that's happening.
Yeah. And now, is it possible that he would take a discount to stay with the Warriors?
Anything's possible, but he's never possibly a match with anyone else thinks of him. I mean,
it depends. I expect somebody would offer him over 10 million per season, which is more than
the mid-level exception, I believe, even if the Warriors get the non-tax payer mid-level.
So Christopps, I believe they could extend above the cap because they, they, I think at his
bird rights in the trade, I got to look into the details of this stuff, but I believe that's how
that works, which would mean they can pay him whatever they want to. The question is, what do they
want to pay him? And if they pay him, I believe then they do lose access, depending on when it all
goes down, they lose access to the full mid-level and they have to pay, you know, their other avenue
towards adding someone is the small mid-level, which obviously does not help. So there's a lot to
consider. I wonder what, Christ, even if he does this a couple more times, plays well the rest of
the season doesn't go down for another extended illness. What's Christopps porzingis's market?
I really don't know. And if it's a question between five million a year from the Warriors and
10 million a year from Charlotte, not Charlotte, that's a bad example now. Washington,
you know, who knows what he decides after everything that has gone on with him. I don't know what
his priority is. He has made a lot of money. So I would say the odds of porzingis being here are
much better than the odds of melting being here, but obviously you'd like to have both back.
Look at what they did tonight. All right. So let's talk about this season because the Warriors
are going to have a crack at it. I mean, it's a couple of games you got to win just to get to the
playoffs and you do that. And it's a road challenge the entire way to go through anyone. It was
probably lining up likely to be a short stint against OKC. But with the way Melton's playing,
Guy, porzingis having the contest that he did tonight, is there a chance that if you got
Steph back five games before because it sounds like put to rest the talks of the Warriors shutting
them down, unless something unforeseen happens and there's another setback, Steph's going to play.
And he's on this road trip and it may be in the next week or two. And if that's the case,
how much better does this team look than they were when they went down when he went down? Because
think about what Ghee's done since then, like before Steph went down, Ghee was barely cracking.
I mean, he had up this rotational game, but he was never scoring 10 points. Now every single night,
he's in double figures and and porzingis is replacing nothing.
Is replacing nothing. I mean, buddy, it's a pure ad. But buddy healed was a minus for this team
in his time this season. Porzingis is purely additive. So yeah, they're better than they looked
after the Jimmy injury. Sure. And that's certainly not enough to compete with the thunder,
but it's enough to win a couple of play in games and maybe steal it. Look, it happened there.
Let's, let's, I mean, let's agree out there. You could steal a couple games. You know,
and someone goes down for the thunder. Not, I mean, let's say J. Dub and Chatt are down for the
thunder or something like that. Could you be a thunder with a couple dudes out or if it was
a Shay that missed a few games like then, or is there just, are they so deep that it's like,
it doesn't matter who the thunder threw out there as long as they're not missing three days,
they're going to beat you. You're, you're Jalen and Chatt one was a little interesting, you know,
Shay and one of those guys, but it's not a good matchup. You know, you don't think they're going
to be injured. I'm just saying you never know. Right. And listen, if Steph comes back,
sooner than later, it's not, I mean, they're really a game and a half behind the Clippers right
now. It's not out of the question. If the Clippers lose to the spurs tonight, which is doesn't seem
like a bad bet, then the Warriors will be one game back of the eight spot. So it's not out of the
question that they could avoid the thunder. If, if things break well, you know, you'd love to think
you get two out of the next four against South Expistence Hawks in Mavericks, which again,
doesn't sound super likely, but it's not impossible. So the situation is what it is. It's not ideal,
but there's every chance in the world that they'll get a full playoff series of Steph Curry playing
basketball. And that is a beautiful thing. Yeah. And someone from the chat just chimed in that,
I mean, remember when the Kaminga for Porzinga trade happened, the first thing that was stated
was Kaminga had those two big games. Porzinga sat and everyone said, oh, the Hawks just fleece
the Warriors, you know, who was it? Not Wilkins, Dominique Wilkins hopped in and said, you know,
a hall of fame and what are the Warriors doing? All these different things. And that's now a couple
games where Porzinga's outplayed Kaminga. He's had what two and seven the last few. Again,
the only reason I'm bringing this up is because everyone around Dubnation seems to bring it up. He's
no longer on the team. It doesn't really matter what happens there. Well, and it's just so
completely different. And in the end, for everyone's going to try to want up everyone,
depending on what their belief was, like everyone, Colski, I mean, we sat on different sides of the
table because we don't have to do that on this show. No. Like I think, although we disagreed about
the player who is Kaminga, I think we agree on the obvious truth of the situation now, which is
to answer to this question will be answered over years, not over, you know, four or five games
played for each guy with their new team, not even over this season. The question is whether the
Warriors lost someone who might be good in the future. The question is not whether a healthy
Kristop's Porzingus right now is better than the healthy Johnathan Kaminga, because the answer
to that is obvious. You know, one of them's been an all-star multiple times. But the question is
Kaminga has an opportunity to develop down the road and we'll see. We don't know. We'll see.
We will see if the Warriors can keep their winning ways alive. They start off this road trip
of the Lost in New York. They follow it up with the win in Washington. Now let's back up to the
back up to Boston. They'll take on the Celtics, Kristop's Porzingus' other home. And then the Detroit
Pistons on the road, the best team in the Eastern Conference, still the best team in basketball or have
quite no. Okay. So what a game behind the Thunder or something. Well, they've struggled a bit lately.
They might be a little further back than that now. Okay. They had a few games up at one point.
Minotid Atlanta and we'll see what. Yeah, they've fallen four and a half behind the Thunder at this
point. Minotid Atlanta and we'll see Johnathan Kaminga and his... Or maybe he's the Kaminga
both missed the game. Who the heck knows? Who knows? It's been one of those seasons. But the Warriors
get one of those W's that has so often been alluding them as of late final score. They win by nine points.
It reads eight points. 125 to 117 is your final. Kulski. Appreciate you for joining the program today.
