Oklahoma Sooners dominate UTEP Miners with a 51-0 shutout as Isaiah Sategna electrifies on special teams and John Mateer delivers a commanding offensive display. Jay Smith breaks down the Sooners' dynamic strategy, emphasizing improved run blocking, tight end versatility, and defensive depth featuring Reggie Powers III and Wyatt Gilmore. Key topics include Oklahoma's defensive stand holding UTEP under 200 total yards, special teams sparks from Sategna’s punt return touchdown, and player rotations that saw 70+ Sooners gain valuable snaps. This is the Lockdown Podcast Network celebrating 10 years of your team every day. Today's episode is brought to you by the Dell XPS. I'm Wes Goldberg from Lockdown NBA Daily and Lockdown Heat. So what does it feel like to have a better laptop like the Dell XPS powered by Intel Core? With a premium design that's thin and light, it feels smooth. With a responsive touch screen, it feels fast and precise. And with long lasting battery life, it feels like non-stop energy with a laptop that can keep up. Built for those who want better, the Dell XPS. Built for you. The Oklahoma Sooners opened up the 2026 season exactly like they were supposed to. You are a Lockdown Sooner.
What's going on, Sooner Nation? Welcome to Lockdown Sooners. And thank you for making Lockdown Sooners your first list in every single day. Shout out to all the every dayers out there for tuning in to subscribe to the show. I'm Jay Smith. We are here for our first post game live of the season as the Sooners go out there and handle business as opposed to 51 to nothing. Taking down a U-Tep Oklahoma. Start the game off pretty good. 21 points in the first quarter, 17 points in the third quarter. So basically on the book ends of the beginning and the half, Oklahoma put up some pretty solid numbers. And overall, the defense also did what you hoped they would do. They were able to hold U-Tep under 200 yards total. There are some things need to be worked out in that second and third deep, but for the most part, Oklahoma was cooking the way you would have hoped. And when I say they were hoping they were cooking like they hoped, the things that jumped out to me the most and we're going to dive into that.
We're going to talk about the special teams. You know we got to give Isaiah a tannous some love. We're also going to talk about how the defense was played. The first, the offense itself, John Matier, 225 yards, three passing touchdowns. Got to pass over there to not only satan on a beautiful cross pass across the middle. Another beautiful pass across the middle to Trill Harris. He also got Rocky Beers who also went across but hit the opposite side. And he gave us an iconic hurdle. The one you see on the thumbnail for this video. So Oklahoma was able to play in the parameters that they wanted to. Matier 11 for 17 65 percent completion percentage for two and a quarter. It felt like they were testing out a whole bunch of new stuff. And I'm not mad about it. I think the thing that got me the most excited is the fact that they ran a lot of 12 and 13 personnel. Did you all notice that? Did you all see all those tight ends that was out there on the field?
Right. Consistently, there was there was a mixture you saw Vandorsal air. You saw Trinay Washington and that's me going to your third and fourth. You saw beers and Hansen also doing work. Let me see if we go to the catches besides Rocky Beers big catch. He had another catch so they had a three yard catch and you had the 40 yard touchdown. Then in Hayden Hansen had one catch for 15 yards. So you saw a lot of involvement there, which it tied in. I saw them put Trinay Washington out there as an H back and he got himself some blocking as basically a full back, which was pretty darn good. Totally there for that. But outside of that though, no, you saw a big mixture of everything. I got to go ahead and get Lloyd of Vandors flowers. 15 carries for 79 yards, a touchdown at five yards a carry. Not bad. For his introduction here for Oklahoma and the fans, he actually had a pretty darn good game. I was wondering how they were going to use it or how much they were going to use them.
I had a feeling he would end up being the one with the most carries because if I'm being honest, you probably don't want to throw too many carries on an Xavier Robinson or maybe Jonathan Hatton, but Hatton getting that carry for was at a 24 one yard run. Made me realize that he may have something there. But back to John. He had a pretty good game. He had some good passes. I saw him throw some nice shots. Hey, let's go ahead and just get this out the way too. They robbed our boy. Elijah Thomas on that touchdown, right? Am I the only one that felt that way? Because I swear for everybody. They did him dirty on that touchdown. I understand that they jumped the line and they may have touched the center. But they got that hike off. They should have gave it to his touchdown disrespect. I was pretty upset about that. When I saw that, I'm like, are you serious? Are you serious? And I saw B.V. losing his mind on the sideline about it too.
B lost his mind a lot in this game because of things that were going on. But yeah, that one kind of upset me. Trail Harris is going to be a fun player to watch going forward. Just understand that. B is going to be an exciting piece and an exciting addition to this Y receiver room. Him, he was fun. Of course, the Tanya did his thing. But Elijah Thomas also getting that one that catch for 24 yards, even though they took away his touchdown. It feels like the rotations are going to be a little bit deeper. Now I'm ready to see what it looks like against Michigan. But it does feel like Oklahoma is going to play multiple wide receivers going forward. Let's add to that though. We're going to go through some more of these stats in a minute. But that offensive line, there was a lot of movement out there today.
Good question in here from Ty. It's for Susie. He heard it did not. He looked like he got a stinger. His arm was kind of let down a little loopy, but then he went back out there and was back on the field. He was, he played portions of the first and second quarter. I saw him like late in the second. We were close to the end zone. They put in Peyton Joseph. They didn't put for Susie back in. Then they put Peyton Joseph back in. Then they put for Susie back in and then he was done at the half, which is kind of what you wanted, right? You're up 20, 27 to nothing at the half and it didn't make sense to really play him. Shout out to Noah Bess. Did good in his first start. There was a couple moments where I was like, I need to be a little bit better, but he did well for his first start. Caleb Nidda, honestly, I thought he was pretty good with also. Can't wait to see what the grades look like once we actually get that from like a PFF and the profile ball network and see all the different folks that grade it.
We're curious to see what everybody's take is on how the line did, but they're out there pushing them around. This looked completely different than Illinois State last year. We rushed for 170 yards in this game. This looked a lot different. It felt like they were actually making moves and actually making cuts. Our running backs felt like they were actually hitting holes and making people miss. That's a good feeling. That's progress. So I didn't have any red flags in this when they finished with 400 yards of total off pins, but you could tell that they were burning a ton of clock. Time of possession, 30 minutes for us, 29 for them, mainly because in a few situations, we had short yardage. There were a couple of drives where we didn't really have to go very far. Yeah, you had just so-fade. Early at the 70s, did you hit the 15 yard? You got a 34 yard. I feel real bad for a punter. I want to say that out there as well. Kind of felt bad for him with that because, yeah, dude, he shanked like what?
Two or three punts? Man. And then, of course, yeah, that one that was like five yards, it was bad. It was really, really bad. As mentioned, getting roughly 4.4 yards of carry. That's the first down every three runs, not too shabby. I didn't get my big explosive runs that I was hoping for, but I did get some pretty big passing plays. The trail here at 48 yard touchdown was good. Rocky beer is 40 yard with solid. Satanus 34 yard was really good. You did get some plays where you did feel like, all right, they actually made the D-4 fence have to work and the offense can go out there and just make something explosive. That was the only reason why I didn't think we'd hit 51 Truth Be Toe. I didn't know if we was going to get a bunch of explosive plays because I knew that we were going to run the ball a lot and take our time.
You don't need to do a whole bunch against UTEP. This is the game where you're testing all kinds of stuff out and we tested a lot on offense. Did you all see John Matier on the center? Who liked John Matier under center? Who enjoyed seeing him and the tidy is looking good? Please talk to me. Who enjoyed how you're out there in 12 and 13 personnel and you see in dudes pool and they actually creating holes? Like you got all of that. You got the full experience of it feels like a new playbook. It felt like a whole new scenario for this team. This was everything I was hoping for we was going to get. Y'all saw that? Y'all synced them tight ends doing things? We have four tights. One play I feel like we have four tight ends out there at once. I may be a little crazy. I got to go back and rewatch the game first thing in the morning. But I feel like I synced four tight ends out there.
I saw Trinay. I think he made me as an H back and you had beers and you had Hanson and you also had JVD. It felt like you did. I didn't see it. I wasn't crazy. I was like, that's four tight ends. That is what we were wanting to see. All of you have talked about in a lot of you in the comments was definitely excited to see more tight end play, get them motion, get them catches, but the blocking component that they brought you were wanting to see. We got that. The more we do that, the better this team is going to be. And honestly, that's going to lead to a lot more rushing. We ran for 170 in this game, combined with everybody. It's actually a lot better than we've done most seasons. I don't think the only other time we outdid that was you tip the last time we played them we ran for like 220 some yards. And we won the game 49 and we gave up like 17 points. This time it was 51. Oh, we got the shut out. We needed to get thanks to their kicker being really bad.
Really, really bad. But yeah. You ran the ball with a lot of running backs. You played five backs. Andy Bass, man, I hope he's okay. He looked hurt. He looked like he got hurt on that fumble. So I'm hoping that he is okay. But you did get to see a lot of backs out there. 39 carries 170. I'm not mad about that. We were very disciplined. We only had three penalties all game. Boganowski with that one. We'll talk about defense in just a minute. The Titans don't. Yeah, yeah. The Titans made me happy. I knew it would make you happy. It made me happy. Yeah, I think it was a high percentage probably about 82% of the time. That was really good. And now we got to do is continue to improve on that. John Matier going under center. And I think the thing that I was the most pleased about him under center was as soon as he went under center and he did the play action play.
That was a satan you touchdown. He got his hips and his head around quick. I was like, oh, John, you've been practicing. You and had the good motion. He had his legs. He had his feet planted and he looked boom. And then the trail Harris one hit that man. Right in stride. If John plays like that all season long, this team's going to be. Nasty. Like Michigan's going to be a fun game to watch now. Because all these different wrinkles they threw in here that we really did not see much of last season game changers. Like we played 12 last year, but we didn't play 12 like we played this time. Like the way we used it and saying that one, they've touched down that new power had actually to play before that. They pulled best and EPL at the same time. And I was just like, and they just ran through to do.
I was listening to the radio broadcast and Teddy was like, shout out to that corner, making a business decision. He saw that big dude coming there. He just fell to the ground. And so he saw best coming at him. He took the shot and is like, I'm just going to lay down because he knew it was not going to be good for him. Whatever. So Baraki beers giving us an athletic play leaps and bounds. He got a touchdown too. I was like, that's the way I had a tight end touchdown like that. Says, well, Kane Helms got one last year. But yeah, if if Rocky beers is going to do stuff like that, I'll see you alone. Yeah. Blalock was out there warming up, but he did not take a carry. He did not take a carry in this game, but he did warm up. I did see that he was warming up. But man, I'm so I'm just I'm so math eating.
I'm so mad at them rush for taking out away from him. That was his Tuddy. Let that man have his number. But we looked we looked apart in this game, 51, oh, it could have been more, but you could tell that they weren't trying to just throw the gas on for real. They were really testing out stuff that they know they're going to have to use going forward this season. I want to talk about this defense though. I've been looking at this defense, looking at the numbers. My gosh. We going jump right into them coming up next here. Oh, this live edition locked on. You can check it out locked on soon as I super cast.com defensively though, y'all saw some freshman get some action. Our standard guys do they're supposed to do Reggie powers of third lettuce and tackles
him and Owen Heineke. I think Reggie powers is going to try to find himself a way to get into the conversation of defense to play here. I need to get some more sax though, but at the same time he had a tackle for loss real good. He was hitting the he he was hitting people. He was really hitting people. He was hitting people love it. Owen Heineke was doing this thing Taylor wine. We finished the game with four sax which shockingly credit was given to tank Carrington and Jake Creel got a half you got a half from Bishop Thomas as well as keep Lewis. PJ got his own sack and then Dane Bather's the true freshman linebacker got him one as well number 30. Ten tackles for loss. I call that the BV stat. Call up the BV stat because typically when Brent Vennible's defenses lead or at the top
in tackles for loss the defense finishes within the top 10. We're on pace for that 10 tackles for loss. I expect Morgan's Michigan because I expect that insert to actually be a lot more focused because you tub did get 198 yards in this game. But the thing that I recognize of how they got that is we subbed out of players. I noticed that when we had our second deep in and some of the 3D that's when you start to see some of those breaks especially when they put that quarterback in more. Raymond more to third. He had 49 yards on nine carries. His longest was a 51 yard so he'd been losing yards outside of that but yeah he was breaking it. I'll give him that athletic. They did a really good job of a bunch of misdirection. They did a bunch of tricky plays tricky type plays because they tried to find as many ways as possible to not get stuck on a drop back for too long.
That was only reason why we only had 4x. They were they they told the quarterback, hey if you ain't feeling it running immediately just just get out of there because you know they're going to hit you really hard and that is exactly what we got there. They were out there. They were trying they were scrambling like crazy and there's not much you can really do about that when it's like a like a one read and immediately find a hole and run especially got athletic quarterbacks. They're both the quarterbacks are pretty athletic but that was their goal. Don't get killed is what we're asking. Even though it is kind of weird how they did so many design runs for E.J. Colson. I felt like they were trying to get the kid killed if you think about it. But Raymond having that big run on a busted play and the backups were there literally. I think he broke he just about broke 3 or 4 players just about 3 or 4 but he was he was bottled up but he got away from all those young young backs back there and I was like
dang man y'all gotta you gotta wrap up if we wrap up a little bit better those young players who've been good he was he was he was bottling more was out there putting in work like he was evading us pretty well same thing Colson was he just didn't finish out well for him. Now granted they did finish the game 112 yards Russian 86 yards passing they 6 yards passing was even more interesting to me they were 10 for 18 for 86 yards 56 per percentage E.J. Colson only completed 50% of his passes for 52 yards while Raymond Moore had was 3 for 5 for 26 he only threw the ball five times they threw about 18 times all game loan and they had a time of possession of like 29 minutes they ran it 38 times for 112 yards average in 2.9 yards carry not bad we we we forced them to do a lot all their stuff came from a couple of big plays which is going to happen you're playing as another
football team they're going to figure out how to get some yards the defense did some good stuff especially with the rotations that was the thing they made me happy is when you brought in more players we did well they fumbled twice and we got both the fumbles to you can see they had some nerves going at the same time I think that's actually why they kind of they started that those couple turnovers came in I think the nerves starting to kick in for them but yeah they're quarterbacks with much better at running than throwing like much better so yeah it's where those Nigel did play in the fourth quarter I did see Nigel snaps a few times I think it was I think it was yeah Teddy that was pointed out that they saw him down there so you did see some Nigel the tackles on here so you got some from Mark Hill for so he was one of the freshman that played Dane Bathurst got on the field he got some time Nico Jandro got some snaps he got a couple of tackles in his game Tane
Carrington got two tackles he was a part of two tackles and he had that half sack and a half tackle for loss let me see Danny Saile the new player he got on the field and got some action out there you saw a little bit of Jacobi Johnson with a fantastic pass break up make me feel super confident we get out there Lebron Bauer got some time on the field yeah you saw a lot of young players but you want to know one player jumped out to me one that actually made me say we got another dude why it Gilmore why it Gilmore when out there is one possession it felt like he was like the only dude on the field here's a possessed man he had a couple of tackles he had one and a half tackles for loss he was like what the heck was he doing we had a 75 players got snaps we played out we played a ton of our players which is exactly what we need to do and as BD mentioned in his post game presser we'll post game interview on ESPN
I can't wait to watch the presser I'll watch it in a bit but he said yeah we got things clean up we all work to do you right we do am I mad about that absolutely not I think he's on a percent thank you he did that but overall we got some good pressure we finished with 10 tackles for loss which is exactly I need them to have double digit tackles for loss every single game this year that is what I that was my prediction is they would get double digit tackles for loss every game this season so they do that we good defense was awesome um they they did especially because we played a lot of young players that's the only reason why I'm not upset my my measuring stick for anything that we play is that we have to give up less than 200 yards against anybody that isn't a p 14 if you give up less than 200 yards I'm good because they're gonna find play like I said
they were running a bunch of trick plays they were trying their hardest to find a way to get the ball out of their quarterbacks hands fast or make it to where we go one direction it can quickly go to other way but we have them pretty pet your fight on throws they did not like throwing the ball you could tell they just did not throwing was just not no they were not about that life so yeah we only gave up we gave up less than a hundred yards passing 14 that probably needed to pass to even get this game close the fact that we were up 14 to oh so fast that was also very satisfying that's a very satisfying I was very satisfied with that no I actually disagree 200 less for New Mexico should be good you tap should be possible I don't think we're doing as mission I think Michigan is gonna get least 250 that's what they got last year but I think
we can we can continue to hold them because I don't think even though they're at home I don't know if Michigan's offense without Justin Haynes back there running back even though Saviah hitter is gonna be a beast he's been praised yeah that they're gonna be able to do that that they're gonna be able to to just be that greater offense this early in the season need more games out of them Jake Creel did though get his credit for his half sack and half tacked for loss shout Jake Creel that was a really nice movie did getting in there making that yeah I was happy I was overwhelmed by this defense and then of course once again the guy that we found a way to bring back satania gave us what you all wanted to see let's talk about it you know on this live edition a lot on soon sport for days episode comes from ultra pouches football season means

overwhelmed hundred and 70 yards Russian on 39 carries exactly what we're looking for but Okoe I expect him to be back going into the next game why receiver two you have some of a why receiver two trail Harris man we time out trail had himself two catches 61 yards on a touchdown satanian forecast 76 yards on touchdown and trail was targeted four times satanian was targeted five times so you're three guys those two of the main ones as allies at Thomas was targeted three times they stole a touchdown from him keep saying that stole a touchdown from him but he didn't finish with a catch 24 yards but I mean mature only through the ball 17 times they didn't throw very much it was really hand the ball off and that's kind of where a lot of the clock went and a lot of the time went in the game because they really want to hand the ball off as much as possible from there
though special teams Isaiah satanian punt return for touchdown I'm gonna be honest I now expect us to do that I didn't think they were gonna actually punt the bottle where we could return it and so you did the first one I was like oh snap word there we go we got that then he shanked him for like the rest of the game I think we had one more we did have one more that satanian was able to return and he returned that for a big return also but that was it you didn't really get much of anything unfortunately which was pretty yeah yeah you didn't get much at all but I will say I I'm very I was very satisfied that to see that satanian he had a how much he will says all purpose yards he finished the game with 215 all purpose yards 76 receiving 24 on the kickoff and 115 on the punt and he had two touchdowns Lloyd of Vaughan had 85 on the
all purpose and in trail had 61 just receiving yards he didn't really have the all purpose we did get some quote unquote short shorts kicking field goals of course Tates and Dale made both of his from 33 and 32 and then he brought in another kicker Liam Evans came from more he got a 34 yarder in slight they're prepping for next year I guess going to put the young boy out there let him get some kicks in that was satisfying to see that he was able to go out there and actually make it and not make everybody nervous when I saw that they changed and like whoa whoa whoa what are we doing over under was 50 and a half when I saw it for the game started what are we doing they didn't mess it up he scored I'll take it it was a very good game overall Oklahoma played they didn't play flawless football they played football with a lot of tests that was satisfying that's all that matter to
me our defense did well our defense made it very difficult for them to really even move the ball I said they had a couple big runs most of their possessions where they had a four three plays four yards at the eight plays 50 at the beginning 11 for 43 and then from there three negative four six 28 five nine three one three negative 15 four seven the big run by Moore which was two for 44 now is when the fumble happened four for negative five four for negative five and in the last one three for 26 so you gave up one two three four five of there two three four five six seven eight 19 11 12 13 possessions five of their 13 possessions were more than 10 yards five of 13 that'll do guys that'll do that will do let me see we're gonna move this into some of the all the
questions in here do you think we have enough diversity for Kerr for Georgia Kerr smart we'll try and shut out the run games so we stick to passing and that will make his job a lot easier yeah I think so I think I think we should be good on that truth be told I think we'll be I think that the Georgia game will be similar to them playing Alabama but I think that we'll be able to actually run the ball in comparison to Bama being able to I don't know it's gonna be a close game I don't think it'll be a blowout by either team I think it's gonna be a really close nail-biter of a game and I think both teams are gonna try to establish the run and burn as much clock as possible that's the only thing I think it's gonna be that Becca that's a great question I think John did say that Avat was gonna score the first touchdown I do believe it was him I'll take it though I do believe John actually the one that predicted that shout to him I didn't I knew a I had a feeling Avat was going to score I just didn't know if he'd be first I thought it was
gonna be like a weird touchdown for it I thought actually that the satania punt was gonna be our first touchdown but I'm actually pretty satisfied with the fact that we did get a special teams touchdown that's some diversity for you but right there I was hoping for a defensive touchdown too we just didn't get an opportunity again they threw the ball in this game a total of 18 times and they didn't really throw the ball into harm's way like EJ Coulson was a 70% completion percentage quarterback last season in incarnate word he completed 50% of his passes in this game they had that man in a blender in a blender John finishing with two in a quarter on a dot which that's pretty good and then after that they just stopped throwing it they just said more run the bar more ran the ball nine times through it five they were just like man we got this bad boy healthy
we got out of here special teams is good um we had a good we had a good overall game like I'm not saying this was an amazing game we just was just no it was solid you got to execute on some things you got to see some new stuff again y'all should be just as excited as I am at the fact that we saw 12 13 and some 14 personnel or it will probably be considered 23 personnel but what abs what abs we got that and that to me makes me happy that we're gonna be doing more things than we normally do so let me know what y'all think I know y'all are excited as I am it was first game to season we're back y'all we are 100% back um we are so back football is here now the biggest thing is Michigan coming up I know that they've been practicing their Michigan
install for a while and I think this probably why they started working on some some of the diverse plays and stuff and the rotations they had I actually saw one rotation that was very interesting to me they took out Boghanowski and I think it was right after Boggo got that personal foul which was seem silly but he got that personal foul pulled him out they threw man man out there but then they took Reggie Powers and slid him out there with Peyton Bowen and Peyton Bowen's by move Peyton out the game and they had additional linebackers out there it's all Coles Lovan out there with think Kipp and Coppe thought that was interesting they used him as the backup safety in that moment now it wasn't this think goes in the first quarter or second I was like oh huh because that was actually one of my bigger questions was is will Reggie Powers be that additional safety when they need to swap out Boghanowski or Peyton Bowen or will they actually throw Mark Hill forward out there with umurian Robinson which I didn't think that they would I figured they would put Robinson in
there with another veteran safety and to me that's an opportunity to make sure Reggie Powers is still in the field and also putting Coles Lovan out there and that's when you kind of run the 4-3 defense with your Sam Mike and Will we got to see that and I was like ah kind of liked him we got to stop on that play as well so that was very satisfying but all of the yeah John did predict this guy said 2 and a quarter and then yeah John was right there spot on gotta give him a massive shout out for that is exactly what we wanted actually I think mature probably talked to our John about how many yards he needed so they went ahead and just agreed that 2 and a quarter was the number and he hit that 2 and a quarter so that matters that's a good question here I was surprised he bobed in the out there that said only one drive yeah man he he wasn't ready he looked a little bit on the he had some nerves first time so I think he
may have broke that went new bar out there running though that was a little surprise I'm a mid new bar is a big dude like he's a pretty big guy I mean he's 6 6 2 40 he can handle it but I was hoping to see more wit new bar throws from a be honest bo had his one throw and then the rent and then the the bass fumble I was hoping to see more I wanted to see more throws by wit new bar that was the only thing that disappointed me is that we didn't get more throws out of him so yeah but wit no yeah but wit with the big guy got himself his touchdown congratulations to him welcome to to Norman so Lloyd oh so new guys Lloyd of Vont got to touch down trail hairs got to touch down Rocky Brears got to touch down I'm very sad to Hayden Hansen did not get a touchdown though we were close yeah Zach I agree there was a lot of new names that was out there too in this game which was very
satisfying they went deep into the like as is mentioned in the comments 70 plus players played in this game and that's kind of you you can expect mistakes to happen when you go that deep into your rotation it's just young players finally get a chance to play they're new to what they need to do but Brent Vennibles mentioned it best and we'll talk about this this week that the best part for Oklahoma is 70 players in their two deep 43 of them are third fourth and fifth and six year players meaning you've got a lot of players that have been underneath him and this staff to be prepared that Jacobi Johnson breakup feels like a Lamar Morgan deal because he turned his head around real quick he was waiting for the ball pop knocked it down feels like Lamar Morgan has already started to influence some of these dudes y'all enjoy y'all's evening we're gonna get on a batting here and uh yeah sooners pulled it out 51 to zero thank you all for tuning in the locked
