POSTCAST: Offense SPUTTERS As Pete Alonso RETURNS To Citi Field
About this episode
In his first time back at Citi Field since signing with Baltimore in the offense, Pete Alonso and the Orioles defeated the New York Mets 2-1.
Alonso's return had been circled on the calendar for a while and it was a loud welcome back for the former Mets first baseman, who didn't do any damage against his old team.
As for the Mets, this was a good start from Jonah Tong. He went six innings and allowed just one unearned run during his outing.
The only offense the Mets could muster up came via a A.J. Ewing solo home run, his 10th of the season. They left 9 men on base and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
POSTCAST host Chris Schubert breaks down all the action.

Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. 14 every day. Peter Lanzo made his much anticipated return to city. Field, Jonah Tang puts together a quality start, but the Met's offense did a whole lot of nothing in a two to one loss in the opener of this series. Welcome into the Met's postcast here live on the Lockdown Met's YouTube channel. You can listen to us in the Lockdown Met's podcast feed. Your postcast host, Chris Schubert here with you to break down all things met from this one. As yes, it was the series that had been circled on the calendar, basically from the beginning
of spring training. Peter Lanzo's much anticipated return to city field. Plenty of thoughts on the reception that he got some of the chance that we heard in this one, Jonah Tang. Start perhaps of his big league career. Certainly the best start that he said of the two this season will break down his performance and this one is about the missed chances for the Met's tonight offensively. Let's jump right into it. What you'll be talking about, Pete's return to city field. This is what you'll be talking about. It's rare, but it does happen over the course of a 162 game season where something really other than the baseball game itself and what happened between those two white lines take center stage and is the story coming out of this game. But it really didn't matter what the Met's did tonight. When the game lose the game, blow out the Orioles, get blown out by the Orioles. A perfect game gets thrown. Maybe that would have changed things, but I knew this morning when I woke up doing the
postcast tonight, what the opening story was going to be. It was going to be Pete Alanzo's return to city field. His first game since leaving in the off season, since signing with the Baltimore Orioles, his first time returning to city field. And I knew what the reception was going to be. I knew that there were going to be a bunch of allowed cheers for Pete. I also knew there were going to be some some cheers for David Sterns and the front office. I heard a pretty loud through the broadcast Fire Sterns chance throughout this one tonight. And look, I am somebody who understood why the Met's decided to move on from Pete Alanzo. I am somebody who understands why there is so much frustration as to Pete Alanzo not playing baseball for the New York Met's and now playing the rest of his career out in Baltimore. So I understand both sides of the coin. And you knew that with a Met season that has gone the way this one has gone, that you set
yourself up for this night to be Met's fans cheering for Pete Alanzo to hit a homer in a second at bat, right? That ball that hooked foul, place went nuts when it left his back. The player on the opposition that the entire stadium is rooting for. I think this is a lot different if the Met season is hanging in the balance. If they're competing for a playoff spot, I don't think those cheers are there. But when you make a franchise altering decision, when you when you let a franchise hero, all time franchise home run leader walk in free agency, you better have a good season right after and you better be in a good spot when you face that guy and he returns home or else this is what is going to happen. So you kind of knew this is what it was going to sound like. I wish that it was different. I wish that Met's fans didn't want to cheer Pete Alanzo and wanted to cheer on the guys who've been playing some good baseball since the trade deadline. But I understand why the frustration still exists. I understand why you want to give Pete that that that that cheer the loud welcome back
because Pete made a business decision just like the Met's made a business decision and you can tip your cap and respect Pete for everything that he did and you wish it went differently. But here we are. And so this day has long been circled. It's been one of the more anxious days on the calendar for me because just you just don't love needing to welcome back in a player that had so many great memories for you in your franchise, but it happened and unfortunately the Met's were unable to win this one. But let's talk about the lone bright spot in this game for the New York Met and Jonah Tom going six innings, having just the one under and run allowed against him and boy baseball is a funny, funny sport sometimes, right? And while it's not his fault, how do the Orioles score their first run? So ball hit to the first base spot that Pete Alonzo man for all those years, the ball takes a weird hop. It goes by bread, and that sets things up in that in that inning, right? Just baseball can be a cruel and funny sport sometimes and those were the baseball gods laughing on the Met's and everybody involved with that moment in this one.
That was it. That's the only run allowed against Jonah Tongue as he goes six innings allows just the one under and run, just the one walk and six strikeouts and perhaps I would call this the best start of his big league career. You look at last year, he made five starts. He had a five inning outing against the Padres where he allowed just one on run and run in that one as well. But it's the first time that he's gone six innings, air go the first quality start of his big league career. And it is definitely felt differently since he was called up the second time, right? It looked different in that start against Miami, despite giving up the four runs, despite allowing Miami back into that game, he settled down after that and looked like a different pitcher and he followed it up with a really good start here tonight. Again, the four hits, no earned runs, just the one walk, the command was there. And you loved that there was even a consideration of him potentially going out there for the seventh inning because he had a quick six and he was only at 83 pitches.
This is one of those times where Andy Green, I think, could have gone both ways in this start. He could have went back out there with Jonah, allowing him to build, to throw a pitch into the seventh inning to see if he could go seven or he could have did what he did take him out, allow him to get out there with his first quality start and feel good about himself in his second start this season for the big league club. So I think both options would have made sense for Andy Green, but I understand why he shows the one that he did and it's good that Jonah Tongas come up and I think it's had two decent starts. The six strikeouts were good. Again, limiting the damage against him just at one run in that second inning. And again, the baseball gods kind of laughing at him a little bit with the double that got by there to allow that run to score. So Jonah was good. He gets the no decision and unfortunately the story of this one is the Metz offense. So we will break down the offense or the lack thereof of the offense tonight for the Metz and then we'll get you ready for the remainder of this series.

on metz pod cast feed. Chris Schubert here with you recapping the metz falling in this one. Two to one in the opener of this three game series with the Baltimore Orioles, the start of the final homestand of the season for the New York Metz. Unfortunately with this loss, the metz now the best they can do if they went out is go 81 and 81 with this one. And look, this is about the offense tonight. Don't a tongue pitched well. Yes, they gave up the Homer to to Gunner Henderson there late in this one that came off of dead now. Noon yes, but at the end of the day, you look at this one and you see the nine men left on base. You see the over three with runners in scoring position in the metz had chances to win this game. You look at the second inning. I know it all happened with two outs, but a semi and single, you in walks, baby walks bases loaded in that second inning after the double in the second gave the Orioles the lead. You have a chance to immediately respond for Francisco Alvarez strikes out on four pitches. So big chance there.
Three guys on the base pass on able to come through. You get two hits in the third. You got first and second with two outs. You can't do anything in that spot. So back to back innings, you got guys on base, you got runners in scoring position, unable to cash in. The only run that you do get in this game, AJ, you and hits his tenth homer of the season. So credit to him, a double digit homer season for a rookie who's not really expected to have a lot of power that you start to wonder if this, this kid can have 15 home or power over the course of a full regular season. Definitely feels like he could be a 15 to 20 home or guy. And I know we talked about this early when he had a little bit of a power surge. And yeah, he said he definitely has got a little more pop than maybe we all thought as he hits his tenth homer in this one. And then the fifth lead off walk to Soto, young draws a walk again, two men on. It is still two outs, but again, still an opportunity to score. You can't do anything in the fifth. And then in the eighth, you get a lead off single from Benj, Vientos is the pinch hitter strikes
out, Simeon flies out, you and flies out. And that's it. You go down one, two, three in the ninth inning. So again, this is a game where the meds had their chances that bases loaded opportunity in the second really stands out. The two men on, two men out in the third really stand out. Just lots of chances that the meds were unable to cash to cash in on. And that Alva as one in the second felt like the biggest one of the game because it was a chance for you to immediately respond. That's only had six hits in this one as well. Again, only the three at bats with runners in scoring position. So a game of missed chances because the meds very easily could have taken a lead in this game and handed it off to the bullpen. That was good. Pintaro was good. Nunez did give up the homer. I thought Sangle looked good. He gave up a couple of hits but worked around it, got three strikeouts. The pitching was good. I mean, he gave up just two runs in this game. That should be good enough to win, especially with an offense recently last week or so that has been able to put up crooked numbers, unable to really crack Brandon Young and this
Orioles bullpen as they only got the one run against Young and the bullpen filled with the former Mets familiar faces out there in that Orioles pen unable to do anything against them. So a lot of emotion tonight with it being Pitalanzo's return to city field and you could feel that in the crowd. He did go over three and drew just the walk in this one so didn't do any major damage against his old team. But now there are two more games in this series. It will be another one tomorrow night. So we Sean Menaya on the mound for the Mets and it will be very interesting to see which version of Sean Menaya we see tomorrow. Is it the starter that had five perfect innings to start his last outing against the Marlins or is it the guy who pitched in that six inning against the Marlins and the previous five or six starts before that? Which one is it? And that is kind of the the crux of Sean Menaya right now is that you just don't know which version of him you are going to get but he will be on the mound hopefully to help this
Mets team snap what is now a two game losing streak and they've lost three of their last four so they'll need some quality. Although again as we mentioned they got the quality tonight from Jonathan and if we're going to do it we very rarely give out a player of the game in a loss but I'll give one out to Jonathan because it was easily I think the best start of his big league career. This is the lock down player of the game. Six innings just the one uner and run in this one and it was the best start of his big league career and it showed the growth coming off of that start where he did give up the the four runs in that second inning but threw up three zeros after that left the mound feeling good was able to do the same here and look you got McLean you've got Scott you've got Thornton and you're starting to its small sample size comparative to the other guys but you want to talk is starting to give you some signs of somebody that you might be able to count on here moving forward but a tough one tonight for the Mets as their offense betrays them it was an emotional night with Pete Alonzo back in the ballpark by
the way I thought it was a nice touch for to play his walk up song for the first time that he came up I thought that was the right thing to do and the crowd definitely showed their appreciation for Pete is this is the franchise all time home home run leader right a important figure for this Mets team since he came up in 2019 and so the first time to see him in different colors it was weird you could definitely feel like he wanted to do something at that park but ultimately the over three with the walk but now it'll be back to more focusing on the baseball for the next two days got this one night where the the other stuff was the the main attraction with the baseball being kind of the side show the baseball will be the main attraction over the next couple of days we're back here tomorrow on the Mets postcast to break down the second game of this series hit that subscribe button turn on the notification bell so that you are notified when we go live tomorrow night for the Mets postcast after the Mets take on the Orioles in the second game of this series until next time have a good one Mets fans.
