#pov Historical Edition: Tuberculosis Nurses
About this episode
The nursing shortage in the US, lead Seaview Sanatorium to recruit black nurses in the south to the New York tuberculosis hospital. While black nurses were not allowed to work in most hospitals, were not allowed in the American Nursing Association, nor given any supervisory positions in the few hospitals they were employed due to racial discrimination, there contributions to the medical profession could not be ignored. Face to face with the most deadly disease of the time, working tirelessly to care for their patients day in and day out, it is because of them the tuberculosis epidemic ended and the sanatoriums across the nation closed.
