With over $80 million in cap space, the commanders are poised to get as aggressive with contracts
as they want to be on the field.
You are Lockdown Commanders, your daily podcast on the Washington Commanders.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, every day.
This is Lockdown Commanders, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, the number one sports
podcast network, and I'm David Harrison, your guy on the ground.
Financial member of the media covering the Washington Commanders for WUSA9.
Also, find me writing for commanders on SI here with you five days a week and coming up on this
episode, Scheme fits matter more than payroll, which led Adam Peters to make a right decision
that he's probably going to get minimal praise for.
And pressure has to start up front.
So getting rights in the trenches is priority number one.
But first, what are the commanders going to do with all that cap space,
all that coming up on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders?
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, every day.
It is mailbag time.
Why not our only, actually, because we got a lot of questions.
So we're going to split this up through multiple episodes.
But our last mailbag series, I'll put it that way,
of the offseason before free agency arrives.
The next time the mailbag opens, will not be next week because we're going to be needy
been news, probably the week following that we are going to have a lot of things to talk about.
We got a lot of things to set up here in the meantime.
Jonathan coming through every day or all access member inside or all those good things.
Jonathan coming through, will the commanders be aggressive spenders in free agency?
And will they adopt a more dictating balanced play style on both sides of the ball?
The short answer, yes, the commanders are going to be aggressive spenders
and plan on dictating the action on both sides of the ball.
Complimentary football is another way that we talk about.
That creating momentum and efficiency in the process.
That is the plan, right?
After releasing March on Latin more, clearing 18 and a half million dollars off the book.
That move has yet to be processed.
But it's coming.
Adam Peters is sitting on over 80 million dollars.
Almost at 800 million dollars.
That's crazy.
Adam Peters sitting on over 80 million dollars in cap space.
Top two in the NFL and available fund.
Let's say a deal with Laramie Tumsle gets struck tomorrow.
That's going to put him over 100 million.
Now on Wednesday evening, Shai Tuddle defense attack.
Dietrich-wise junior defensive end confirmed by sources.
Have agreed to new one-year deals with the Washington commanders.
Shai Tuddle got to be honest with you.
Don't know him a whole lot.
He was he was around the team last year.
Dietrich-wise junior obviously was a starter until he got injured.
Got to know him a little bit more had him on the show during the off season.
One of the best dudes in the locker room that I've ever met.
Super pumped for him to come back.
I think he's going to make a big difference.
I don't think that anybody on this defensive line is going to be like every single snap guy.
So I wouldn't get too worried about that.
It's not going to prevent the commanders from going after ed rushers.
Not going to prevent them from drafting anybody.
Things like that.
But super happy for Dietrich.
I know he's wanting to come back.
I'm super happy that he is coming back on a new one-year deal.
But even with those deals, if the Larry Thompson deal gets done before Monday,
which I don't actually think is probably going to,
we'll talk about that later in the week in another Malabag episode,
could be wrong would be thrilled to be wrong.
But there's a lot of reasons why I think it's not going to be done before Monday.
When that comes, however,
Washington mayors would jump over $100 million in cap space.
Of course, in the meantime, if they sign some new deals,
they'll hit eat into that cap space a little bit.
But either way, lots of money for Adam Peters.
What are they going to do with it?
It's not just about having the money.
It's about the leverage that the money provides you.
When I tell you, I do expect some aggressive spending in free agency.
I don't want that to get confused with top dollar contract here,
top dollar contract there, top dollar contract there.
It's someone I'm talking about.
But I think that Adam Peters is going to aggressively leverage the cap space they have
to go out there and do his thing, right?
Money is something that helps you do a lot of things.
It's going to help him craft some long-term foundational contracts.
You go back to the 2024 off season when they signed
a few multi-year deals, right?
Frankie Lubu got one, Tyler Biodish got one, things like that.
Then they signed a bunch of one-year deals.
So those three-year deals, you're trying to lay a little bit of a foundation
to build on top of only this year.
They have a lot more information.
In 2024, they didn't know who they were.
Here, now, they know who they are organizationally, functionally,
who they want to be.
They know what that is supposed to look like.
They know what identity they want.
They have identified some key lessons and what doesn't fit, what does fit,
who doesn't fit, who does fit, things like that.
Lessons that have been learned, even through the misses,
and even through the hits.
Some of the players that have worked out really well
for the wash of mirrors teach them some things.
And this means that they can go out there and agree to maybe a few three-year deals with some
free agents.
They can go out there and get some more one-year deals done,
like some of these veterans, right?
We see coming back to you, church-wise, and Shive Tuttle,
all the things with that knowledge on their side.
So this is a better equips.
They're coming out of a four-win season in 2024.
They're coming out of a five-win season in 2026.
But the level of knowledge, the level of understanding of who they want to be
in the building, much more fleshed out.
I think that's going to give them quite the advantage
of how they go through and try to do these deals.
Now, we moved to the playstyle of things.
And Dan Quinn has always had a more aggressive defensive philosophy,
even though it hasn't always been hyper-blitzy, right?
And aggression comes in various different forms.
And they've always intended to dictate the action to the offense.
But they've obviously fallen short of that both years, right?
I think it was better in year one,
but not it wasn't 100% there.
It certainly wasn't there all the way across the board.
Year two, that thing fell off a cliff,
which is why you see all the changes that you do.
So enter Doronte Jones.
Ludovins coordinator for the Washington
commuters comes over from the Minnesota Vikings,
all about aggression, all about dictating the action,
and all about being able to be flexible to your roster,
and also what your opponent is trying to do.
That is what the Minnesota Vikings defense is most known for.
So that's what you're hoping to hear from Doronte.
But it's not just Brian Flores, it's Lou Anna Rumo.
It's Coach Zim.
It's a lot of people that have influenced Doronte Jones
during his career.
David Blau, on the offensive side of the ball,
has played under some of the most forward-thinking minds
in football, Jeff Braum, who's in the college ranks
and continues to evolve his offense every single year.
Ben Johnson, who is well-known for his reputation,
Kevin O'Connell, the coach of the year in 2024,
although I thought I should have been Dan Quinn,
but that's another conversation.
So going back to the dictating part of the question,
these are coaches who have their style,
but they adjust it weekly to take advantage
of their own abilities, your tendencies,
and your flaws.
That's exactly what you're looking for here in the national
football league.
So those are the types of players
that you're going to be looking for as players
that can be used in those modes on offense,
expect more emotion, a lot of emotion,
give Jane Daniels as much info as possible pre-snap.
Also look for the team to target a center known
for being able to hit those reach blocks.
Going under center, more means they need a center
that can hit those reach blocks, seal off a lane,
do those all types of things.
While they're snapping the ball, that takes athletic lessons
and takes quickness off the line.
You're looking at guys like Tyler Lindorbaum,
Conor McGovern, who has history with Dan Quinn,
Luke Fortner, on the second level,
Ethan Pachek, on another level.
I'm pretty sure I'm saying his name right in the draft.
After looking at guys like Jake Slaughter,
Florida Gators, a guy who moves well in space,
can seal off lanes from the center position.
Tyler Beatish, much more of a phone booth fighter,
much more of a power guy right there at the line of scrimmage,
right at the point of attack,
struggled to hit those reach blocks when he was asked to do so.
And I think that has a big reason
for why the team has moved on from him.
We'll talk more about the center specifically.
We'll talk more about that move
to move on from Tyler Beatish specifically
at the end of this episode.
Because we need to dive into the meat of this question,
really, which is on defense, the aggression,
absolutely going to be there.
But the front line still has to be the table
to set up the plan of attack.
If that front line loses,
the whole defensive plan just falls apart.
We saw it happen year or time after time,
week after week, last season,
and even that time's in the season before.
We saw that whole thing fall apart
and it starts with that first, that first four,
first three, first five, whatever it is.
Those first guys, that's where the whole thing starts.
And that means you need edge rushers who can create,
not just rely on Dorontay Jones to scheme them open.
Doront's Armstrong was taking that 720-25,
was creating a lot.
He was like the only dude on their outside of Von Miller,
less than 40% of the time getting on the field
before his injury, but he was still producing.
Now he's coming off that injury.
Dan Quinn is a front end guy, Dorontay Jones.
He's a back end guy.
So while it is Dorontay Jones' system,
do expect to have Dan Quinn
and have some fingerprints on it.
I mean, certainly going to be involved
in that process, but some fits that we're looking for
up front specifically at the edge group.
Because like I said, even with D-Tridge-wise,
you're still going to be looking for edge additions.
Obviously, Max Crosby fits,
but the reports are still standing,
hold, standing firm that the Las Vegas Raiders
want a Michael Parsons type deal.
And for me, if you're Adam Peters,
there's no way you're giving up
a Michael Parsons deal for Max Crosby.
So I think if that's true, I would think, I don't know,
but I would think that that takes the wash commanders
out of the running.
However, there is a player that they could be
in the running for in a trade.
That is Jonathan Grinard, Minnesota Vikings edge.
You obviously have the connection,
but you got so much more than that.
We're going to dive into that coming up next
on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders.

March is a time to celebrate women,
especially when it comes to international women's day.
And I recognize just how much they carry
at work and relationships and families
and all the unseen roles they step into every single day.
It's easy to celebrate that strength,
but it's just as important to make space
for their emotional well-being and honestly.
That goes for all of us.
When I look at all the things that my wife has done
for me, for my family, throughout my military career,
and even now after retirement,
I mean, if the women in my life need to get that time
to get away, re-centered themselves,
find some perspective, whatever it is,
BetterHelp is a place that I would send them
to go get their emotional well-being
because it matters.

Continuing now, today's mailbag episode.
Really one question, two segments here.
We get some bangers every once in a while,
a lot of while actually.
Jonathan dropping a banger on this one.
So on defense, like I said,
with these new changes, you expect aggression,
but that front still has to be able to dominate
set the table for all those things.
Even if you're opening up for a safety,
a DB, a linebacker, to get the sack,
it's going to start up front
and what those guys do.
If the line loses, the whole thing falls apart.
That means you need rushers who can create on their own,
not just rely on Dorontay Jones
to get them wins for them.
Max Crosby is obviously a guy that does that
too expensive, according to the reports.
Jonathan Grenard, however, I think he's the most logical whale
talking about like big fish.
And I know whales aren't like fish, whatever.
But you know what I mean, to go out there
and get after he knows the Flores style,
obviously playing in Minnesota.
He knows Dorontay Jones.
He did have a dip in sack numbers in 2025
because he was bad a little bit of an injury.
But he's at 12 sack pedigree.
He's at high football IQ.
He knows how to execute the scheme, the disguises.
He's a plug-and-play guy that can help the team
also translate move forward a lot faster.
And he's probably going to be a pretty good fit
in the locker room if Dorontay Jones is vouching for him.
The Vikings are $44 million in the hole.
They are releasing Jonathan Allen
to get some of that money back.
They're also willing to move off
with Jonathan Grenard to get some of that money back.
Jonathan Grenard accounts for $22 million
against salary cap in 2026.
He's due $19 million in cash.
So this is a cash and cap situation.
It's not just salary cap space.
It's also cash on March 13th, 5th day of the newly year.
If he is on the Minnesota Vikings roster,
$4 million of that salary becomes guaranteed.
They don't want that to happen.
They want him gone.
Before that happens, if the commanders trade
just picks for a standard contract,
they're likely going to have to send their third round pick,
their number 71 overall pick.
And maybe one of their six round picks even to get them.
They take on the $19 million in cap hit.
The Vikings would save about 12.25.
You might be able to save that six round pick
because everybody kind of knows
like you need to move off this dude,
but you're probably still going to give up that third.
That's a little rich.
That's a little steep,
especially when you only have that first
and that third rounder in the first two days.
Now you're looking to have it a first
and then a fifth rounder.
That's a really long stretch.
So it's a little bit tough to swallow.
However, if Washington takes all the money,
if they take all the cash owed to Jonathan Grenard,
the cap hit savings are the same for Minnesota,
but the cash savings for the Minnesota Vikings owner
is a little bit different.
2026, seventh round pick and Jonathan Grenard
coming from Minnesota Vikings in exchange
for the commander's 2026 fifth round pick and 2027 fourth.
That's what the historic math says.
The deal would probably look like.
That's a lot easier to swallow
to bring Jonathan Grenard over from Minnesota.
Given the timeline, however,
and the fact of the Minnesota Vikings
are basically under more pressure to get this done
than the watch the commanders are
because the watch players don't have to trade from.
Like it's great.
It's a great luxury.
It's a great compliment.
All that kind of stuff.
There's edge rushers out there on the market.
They can just tell the Vikings.
Look, dude, we don't got a trade for him.
We want a trade for him,
but if you try to make this too difficult,
we'll just move on.
We'll just go sign somebody for A&G.
Keep our draft picks, right?
What they might be able to do is get Minnesota
degree to a deal.
2027 fourth round pick.
That is conditional.
Becomes a third if Grenard is an all pro.
So then they get Grenard in a seventh this year.
You actually add a pick.
Now it's a seventh round pick,
but you add a pick to the stock pile.
You get Jonathan Grenard.
You take all the money.
So the Vikings ownership doesn't have to pay any
to any Ziggy Wolf.
It doesn't have to pay any cash to Jonathan Grenard.
You get all the cap relief.
All that kind of stuff.
And then the Minnesota Vikings worst case scenario.
You get a fourth rounder in 2027
to help you reset your cap and all that kind of stuff.
That's case scenario.
Grenard goes and balls out for the Washington commanders.
You get a third round pick in 2027.
And while third round picks are very valuable,
if the Washington commanders have an all pro caliber edge,
because they got to give up a third round pick next year,
I think we can all deal with that a little bit.
So then again, like I said,
my understanding is that Minnesota would say
the exact same amount in cap space,
but would not have to pay out as much in cash.
And the belief in Minnesota is that their ownership
is trying to save as much cash as possible in these moves.
Washington, like so would carry that full 19 million dollars
into their salary cap, which they got plenty room for
or do a very simple restructure.
And you can easily lower that cap hit to around $7 million this year
if you want to save $20 million off that deal right off the cuff.
And then you can go target other edge rushers.
Other edge presence guys like Jalen Phillips.
He's got Miami Dolphins Philadelphia history.
Dronte Jones, if you heard his introductory press conference,
he loves mug looks.
And I'll tell you right now, you can't see us
during these press conferences, which is good,
because he wants to watch a bunch of reporters
during press conferences, nobody.
But when he talked about how much he loves the mug up,
the mug up the line of scrimmage,
I got a big ol' smile on my face,
and there were a couple of reporters in the room
who saw me smiling, kind of laughed at me a little bit,
because I'm not an NFL coach,
but I love the schematic talk as much as I can get it.
Jalen Phillips says one of those types of guys,
he can mug up as a DNing, play off the line of scrimmage,
three point stands guy standing up, he can do a lot of those things.
Injuries have obviously been a little bit of an issue for him.
Wouldn't necessarily be a traditional defensive end.
He would be kind of a joker type of player
used to kind of overwhelm those interior offensive linemen
on delayed blitzes, things like that.
And his athleticism would allow the dictation of terms
that we just talked about a little while ago,
a little bit more.
So he's an option.
Otife Oway, he's probably my favorite option.
Former Baltimore Raven, former Los Angeles Charger,
demonstrated speed, doesn't live in a box.
You can do so much with Otife Oway.
One of the most athletic dudes in the National Football League
in Durante Jones is going to thrive off of disguised coverages.
And Oway is a guy who's comfortable rushing, obviously,
wide nine things like that.
Talking about way off the offensive tackle tie then,
but he can also drop in coverage
and not look like a fish out of water,
makes him the perfect kind of disguised type
of defender on the edge there.
If you bring him in, I'll tell you right now,
you go trade for Jonathan Grenard,
you go bring Otife Oway in,
and you got Doran Armstrong coming back from injury,
you got Dietrich Wise as a big end,
you got Javon Kinlaw,
who can rotate down inside and play big end as well.
I mean, if you want Jeremiah Love,
I'm tired of this right now.
If you want Jeremiah Love,
these are the types of moves you want the Washington
Commanders making, or if you want Caron El Tate,
or if you want Caleb Downs,
these are the types of moves you want the Washington Commanders
because the more they make the edge,
not a priority because they address it in free agency,
the more you can draft some of these other positions.
But you also have a secondary situation with Washington.
In the secondary,
you need a cornerback position addressed right now.
They've got Trey Amos,
they've got Mikey Saider still,
and you got a bunch of futures contracts guys.
No offense, those futures contracts guys,
but they're on the futures contracts for a reason
and it's because they're not established NFL players.
So who are the targets?
Jalen Watson, out of Kansas City,
arguably the number one cornerback entering free agency,
played 96% of the national of the chiefs,
highly rated man cover corner,
want to talk about dictating terms,
62 physical has that shut down corner pedigree.
It's going to be expensive,
three year, 54 million dollar deal or more,
but that would immediately secure that spot.
Yeah, Mikey inside,
and I know some of us want Mikey outside,
but yeah, Mikey inside Trey Amos on the outside,
and then you have Jalen Watson there on the outside
to reap woolen is another guy,
like he's no consolation prize as far as I'm concerned,
like he's the second grand prize,
six foot four, four, two, six speed, 55 or 65% lockdown percentage
in the NFL last season, Doronte Jones has a history.
He loves length of the line,
aggression, he loves to play, press zero coverage,
aggressive, all that kind of stuff,
Trey will certainly fits the bill,
four years, 72 million dollar contract
is his estimation to be that guy.
And you also have a guy like a Latte Taylor out there,
27 years old, he's versatile, he's got a high IQ,
he's been a bright spot on a pretty bad New Orleans
Saints defense,
honestly had 83 tackles, 11 pass breakups in 2025 alone,
and again, that intelligence is what really works for him,
and also his ability to play inside and outside,
he can be an outside guy, he can be an inside guy,
and honestly, I would love to see the team go out there
and sign a Latte Taylor and sign someone like Jalen Watson
or Trey Amos, and just kind of rotate guys in it,
as you need it, you know what I mean, like listen,
Mikey Sanders, so if they lined up with a big slot,
we might pull you off the field for a rep,
you take a breather, we put a Latte Taylor in there
in the slot, do those types of things,
I mean, you know, $11, $12 million for a corner,
get that rotation going, you do all those things,
wouldn't necessarily hate that,
and the elephant in the room for this whole thing,
the whole reason we think the commanders might be aggressive
in spending, and like I said, the aggression doesn't mean
this top shelf free agent, that top shelf,
like five top shelf free agent dudes,
I'm just talking about being aggressive
and using that leverage, using that money,
to get as many holes sold as possible,
is because the elephant in the room,
this is your last offseason,
before Jane Daniel's eligible for an extension,
and then Jane Daniel's returns to MVP candidate type form,
like he was coming in off of his rookie year before 2025
was completely shut down by injuries,
you're talking 60 plus million dollars a year
as early as 2027, so if you're gonna use this money,
you gotta use that money this year,
but you also gotta construct these things smart
to make sure you got that room in 2027,
so that is a great question,
there to kick off this mail, that we got another one,
going back to the center position a little bit,
why did it happen, what does it mean,
and what's the outlook of arguably one of the second
and third most important positions on the offense,
that's next on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders,
part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team, every day.
Hey, it's Matt Derry from the Lockdown Lions podcast.
The people I love depend on me.
If I'm gone, the financial responsibilities don't disappear.
I didn't want my family figuring things out
during the hardest moment of their lives.
That's why I knew only one place to go.
I chose life insurance through my friends at ethos.
Ethos makes getting life insurance fast and easy,
100% online, you can get a quote in seconds,
apply in minutes and get same day coverage.
There's no medical exam, you just answer a few simple
health questions, you get up to $3 million in coverage,
some policies are as low as $30 a month.
I love the folks at ethos.
Protect your family with life insurance from ethos now,
by going to ethos.com slash locked on NFL.
In as little as 10 minutes, you can get the free quote
and up to $3 million in coverage at ethos.com slash
locked on NFL.
That is ETH OS.com slash locked on NFL ethos.com slash
locked on NFL application times and rates may vary.
We're wrapping up this mail back up
so locked on commanders with Ravi and Cam
who came through a questions about the center position.
Basically, how should we digest the Tyler Beatish release
and where does center rank as a need now?
Is it good?
A draft need is a free agent need.
Now, the Nick Allegretti has been extended
and we expect him to play the center position,
starting off as a depth type of guy.
I think the immediate answer is,
this is what I like about Adam Peters coming to Washington
in the first place.
I'm going to try, I'm going to kind of answer the question.
I'm answering in a different way.
Adam Peters, not afraid to admit when he's made a mistake,
not afraid to admit when something has gone wrong.
Remember, I told you when Tyler Beatish was released
and my source of the team just simply decided
to go a different direction.
It wasn't injury, it wasn't cap.
They just wanted to go a different direction.
What does that mean?
It's a nice way of saying, you don't fit.
Well, why don't you fit?
You either don't fit from a performance standpoint,
like what you've been doing is not good enough
or you don't fit from what we're going to do.
You don't fit.
You just simply don't fit.
I think it's combination of both.
I think Tyler Beatish, what he has done the last two years
has shown them that he is not the right fit
for what they're going to do, if that makes sense.
I don't think Tyler Beatish did anything
egregious or gross misconduct or anything like that.
It certainly wasn't the worst center in the National Football League.
I think it was a pretty solid center
in the National Football League.
But you see it time and time again,
when he's asked to make these reach blocks
and he's asked to do these things, just not capable of doing
it to the level that you want to do it.
If you are going to put your quarterback under center
as much as David Blas says they are.
So you make the move, you say minimal cap space
because it is not a post-tune first release.
We've found that out this week.
It is a legit straight up release.
He is free to sign with another team
as early as right now.
So the watchmaker is taking an $8 million hit
to the salary cap for the release.
That is again, a clear indication
that it's simply a matter of you no longer fit
what we're trying to do here.
I'll tell you right now, it's not a personality thing.
It's not a locker room thing.
Whoever gets him is getting a great dude in the building.
If he fits your scheme, even better.
So we'll see how they do that.
Now, Nick Allegrette, he stepped in at center
when Tyler Beodish got hurt last year.
He's not the ceiling play, but he is the floor play.
He raises that foundation for you at that position.
If you need to turn to him, you know you can do so
with a little bit of confidence.
It makes you not be desperate to go after the position,
whether it be in the NFL draft or in free agency.
So if you're going after a guy like, say Tyler Linderbaum
and the negotiations just get out of hand, get crazy.
You don't have to get sucked into that.
If you're in the NFL draft,
you don't have to go with Jake Slaughter,
the first center potentially off the board.
You can wait for Connor Lou,
or you can wait for, you know, day three
and go after a different one of these guys.
That's basically what Nick Allegrette does.
You could go Tyler, Tyler Linderbaum.
You could go Connor McGovern.
You could go Jake Slaughter.
Like we said, the top end guys,
or you go Ethan Poachick.
You could go Luke Foughtner, Fortner.
Sorry, you could go Connor Lou.
You could go Logan Jones out of Iowa
is like a day three project or prospect.
So you could go really any different number of ways.
And that is when we talk about this off season,
any off season, not just this off season,
that is what Adam Peters is trying to do.
We know his favorite word is optionality.
Every single movie he makes this period right here
is going to be to secure optionality for him in April
so he can go literally anywhere.
That's where you get into the best player
available conversations at the NFL draft.
That's going to do it for this mailbag episode.
Next time I'll lock down commanders,
we are continuing the mailbag.
It's going to be one of our short format episodes,
about 12, 15 minutes long.
So one question is going to roll up that entire one.
Then we're going to have another mailbag episode
who's got even more questions that came in from all of you.
So make sure you are subscribed
following along with locks on commanders.
So you get all the latest episodes
because once we get through the mailbag,
then we've got our position group resets.
We're going to be turning out episodes
looking at where the wash commanders stand
and who the top prospects are in free agency.
And I'll even make a little bit of,
I'll make a few predictions as well
so that you can praise me or call me out for them
as your heart wishes, as the news unfolds starting next weekend.
