We are back and doing it locked on Wolverine Podcast part of the Lockdown Podcast Network

The number one sports podcast network.
0:46
I'm your man on the ground is a little publisher of Wolverine's way or through USA Today
0:51
We have a special guest who you can see over to my side if you're watching and if you're
0:55
listening, then you can't, but none of us NBC Sports and DraftKings, John Fanta, all
1:03
things, bass college, basketball, super excited to have you, man.
1:07
I'm great to be with you, my friend and what a time this is for the Michigan Wolverines
1:13
looking to end that big 10 national championship drought is so much fun and, you know, right
1:18
off the top, yes, it's great to be on with your representing DraftKings.
1:22
It's such a fun time of year and DraftKings is certainly where it's at.
1:26
There's a super app in the works as well, which is pretty awesome.
1:30
And a lot of fun to be had on DraftKings is final four weekend.
1:33
A lot of fun to be had in Indianapolis, my friend, because here's the thing.
1:37
The Wolverines meet Arizona and I don't know about you.
1:40
I can't wait to watch the front court showdown at Lucas Oil, say him just to see the size
1:46
on the interior and what happens in this clash of the tightness.
1:50
See, and that's where we'll start off with I was going to get your general thoughts
1:57
Actually, weirdly, I'll do that here momentarily, but the one of the things that I'm looking
2:02
at here is just the matchups and the fact that the front court for both teams, but
2:08
especially how Michigan matches up against Arizona, that's a really intriguing matchup
2:14
What are your thoughts about how that particular part of the game, where does Michigan have
2:22
Where does Michigan not have advantages?
2:23
Well, look, a Diamar and Morris Johnson are just huge.
2:26
They can bear down on you and the ability for Michigan to give them paint touches.
2:32
I think when people hear paint touches, they then think, okay, back you down and then
2:36
Look, Michigan can do that.
2:38
And defensively, they're elite.
2:40
I think where Michigan has an advantage over Arizona in this matchup is the ability to
2:44
pass out of the paint and hit timely threes in rhythm threes.
2:48
So I'm actually looking at it from the opposite side.
2:50
I think Arizona's like, okay, defensively, we got a lot going on these guys.
2:54
We can't let them get to the rim easily.
2:55
Yaxel and the Borges from the Swiss Army night.
3:00
Arizona, they don't have the sheer collection of the Mari Burnett, Roddy Gale, Levenelia
3:07
Kido and his shot making, Trey McKinney, even Will Chatter who could step in and make
3:14
Like the fact is that depth in shooting is a very important part of this game.
3:21
And that's where Michigan can can find some sort of a difference.
3:25
And then defensively, look, Arizona has been in the bottom 20 in college basketball and
3:32
relying on the three point shot.
3:34
Well, Michigan challenges you at the rim every single trip down.
3:39
So their ability to do that, their ability to stay out of foul trouble, be very important
3:44
Arizona leads all teams in the tournament with 88 fouls drawn, that's 11 more than anybody
3:50
All right, sorry, sorry, the little, little pause there, I think we're struggling a little
3:59
with the internet, but nonetheless, I mean, that is, I think one of the biggest keys
4:04
for Michigan is to be able to score the three.
4:07
This is one of the first times that we're going to see a team that Michigan's going up
4:11
against that does not need to, like they still need to defend the perimeter, but it's not
4:16
maybe as much of an issue as it was against, say, Alabama or St. Louis or just, you know,
4:23
look at the big 10 schedule and the teams that were able to beat Michigan, I think though,
4:31
you mentioned being able to kick it out.
4:34
How important is it for Michigan's front court to perform, or sorry, back court to perform,
4:38
but considering we've seen games where LA at Kadoa and Amari Burnett disappear, what
4:45
does that match up look like in your eyes?
4:47
Well, they can't disappear in this game and LA Kadoa needs to play a big time game or
4:51
else Michigan is going to lose this game because Jaden Bradley is outstanding.
4:55
I mean, Jaden Bradley has been a phenomenal point guard and Braden Burries is a winner
5:01
in every sense of that term.
5:03
Now, Burnett, he's got the composure piece, he's got great experience.
5:08
They're going to rely on that in this game, his ability to make plays, his ability to
5:13
How that match up goes, that match up, like this is LA Kadoa putting on the cape and
5:18
wearing that point guard uniform and wearing it with toughness and grit on both ends of
5:24
the floor, because Bradley, Jaden, I think he plays bigger than his body.
5:30
You know, I really do.
5:31
He's got some toughness to him, he's got, but so does Kadoa.
5:34
So it's a swagger match up at point guard and you've got to play within yourself.
5:40
Like you can't try to do too much and that's the biggest thing that Kadoa's got to be ready
5:46
We know he's a superb talent.
5:48
His ability to change the pace is big because in a game with elite defense on the interior,
5:55
how do you break through?
5:58
So look for Kadoa, some of that innovativeness to his game, the ability to sort of make a
6:04
play when there's nothing there or do something that's unscripted, that's could be helpful
6:09
for Michigan in this game and it's where Kadoa could have the edge.
6:15
It's going to be really interesting to see like because Michigan does like to play in
6:19
so many different ways.
6:20
They've shown that they are the type of team that can beat you any way that you want
6:26
We know on this side here at Lockdown Wolverines, what Michigan brings to the table, could
6:30
you explain more about Arizona and the challenge that they pose for this Michigan team, especially
6:37
just their style of play?
6:40
Well, they're so physical.
6:41
Coa Pete is incredibly plays like a football player and they loaded up on the interior
6:46
Tobie Awaka comes off the bench.
6:48
Mo Kriva has been fantastic for this team and I think they've got an X factor to this
6:54
One of their X factors is Anthony Delorso.
6:56
He can stretch the floor.
6:57
He can't get half from three.
6:58
He will be vital in this matchup if he can get cooking from there.
7:02
But for Arizona, they're not going to be confused as an elite shot making team from
7:07
They make timely threes.
7:08
They don't take a lot of them.
7:09
I wouldn't surprise me at all.
7:11
They shot like five of nine from three tomorrow.
7:14
It's kind of how they're constructed.
7:17
If it's a three that they're taking, it's an open high percentage look for them.
7:21
They're not looking to get 35 up the game and not looking to get 28 up the game.
7:25
They are a team that wants to wear you down inside.
7:27
They remind me of the Gonzaga team that went to the final four, went to the title and lost
7:36
to Carolina in 2017.
7:38
You know, they remind me of that team that made a deep run.
7:42
And Tommy Lloyd, he was an assistant for Mark few during that run.
7:46
So I think for Gonzaga, it's for Arizona, rather, their ability to get to the rim
7:55
and is what they need to do.
7:58
But Michigan keeps you from getting to the rim at all costs.
8:01
So I'm really, really intrigued to see how that dynamic place and knowing Arizona gets
8:08
to the free throw line more than any other team in this tournament.
8:11
But two teams get to the free throw line against Michigan, not typically.
8:15
So Arizona, Jayden Bradley's got around the show and Braden Burries.
8:19
Burries as a freshman has made so many big time shots.
8:21
He's got to do it again.
8:23
So Linda Borg versus Pete Showdown, get your popcorn.
8:28
That's actually what I'm going to want to talk about next.
8:30
We're going to return with John Fanta from NBC sports and draft kings.
8:35
We're going to do that here in just a moment.
8:38
I'm Clea Butler, host of Locked on Women's Basketball.
8:42
And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball snapshot celebrating the work no highlight reel can
8:47
ever capture the NCAA women's basketball tournament.
8:51
The A wrapped up with the Yukon Huskies, saying undefeated at 30 A and O after a decisive win
9:00
While the UCLA Bruins rally pass Duke behind a dominant second half performance on the
9:06
other side, the remaining one seeds in South Carolina and Texas will be determined after
9:10
their matchups against TCU and Michigan respectively.
9:15
Next up, the final four is set for Friday in Phoenix with the winners advancing to the
9:19
National Championship on Sunday.
9:22
These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on.
9:26
The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time.
9:31
Mazda puts that same drive into every detail.
9:34
When's to find the moment, putting in the work, that defines you.
9:38
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.

10:08
I want to I want to delve a little bit deeper into like I'm sure Michigan's going to
10:13
just switch things up to some degree.
10:15
You'll see some yaxle on co up heat.
10:17
You'll see some you'll see a morez Johnson there.
10:22
You'll see yaxle on Anthony Dolorso as well.
10:25
I'm just curious because I feel like and you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I kind
10:30
of feel like yaxle is going to end up being somewhat of the X factor in the game.
10:36
For either team, right?
10:37
Like I understand like there's playmakers on both teams, but to me, it feels like
10:43
yaxle is kind of the linchpin.
10:46
If he plays the way that he kind of was expected to, that could play or yeah, play the difference
10:54
What are your thoughts on how yaxle can impact this game in particular?
10:59
Well, look, when he plays his best game, he's one of the three best players in the sport
11:05
because he's so versatile and he does so much for his team.
11:10
So there's not one singular matchup defensively to guard yaxle end aboard.
11:17
He's a wrecking ball and he makes his way to the lane and great things happen whether
11:22
he's making a play for his teammate or he's making a tough shot.
11:27
Dusty may brought yaxle end aboard to Ann Arbor for a reason to win championships in
11:33
the big 10 and an actual title.
11:36
And yaxle is a game record, like a defensive end in football.
11:44
That wing who does it all, he could wreck the game.
11:47
I don't care what Arizona scheme is, yaxle end aboard can break through that, break a
11:51
defense down and just take on the alpha roll, who's going to be the alpha?
11:58
You know that both these teams have candidates, but as you know, it's hard for that person
12:05
It's hard for that person to be the big man because you got to give them touches and
12:09
Yaxle end aboard can be that center piece to this game where he feasts the opportunities
12:15
It's why he came to Michigan.
12:18
Let's see if he does in fact go to eat.
12:22
The other the other aspect of the game that I think is obviously key for Michigan.
12:26
We've touched down the front court of which yaxle, you know, can play front door back.
12:31
But the matchup between a die Mara and Mo crevice to me, that is pretty much of equal
12:41
importance because we've seen Mara kind of disappear in some of these games, but when
12:46
everything kind of runs through Mara, I feel like you see a lot of Michigan, that's
12:51
where Michigan tends to dominate.
12:53
What are your thoughts about that matchup as well?
12:56
Well, I think that that is what what's going to be interesting is can either get
13:01
an early fall on the other because then that could change the tenor of it.
13:06
Mara, I mean, he had my vote for national defensive player of the year.
13:11
That's how that's what kind of defensive player I think that he is.
13:15
His ability to get stops and challenge you at the rim.
13:18
Crevice has seen a lot of size, but the size of Mara is just different.
13:22
You know, what's going to be interesting too is like short role defense, pick him role
13:28
Michigan plays drop coverage, but like we talked about before, Arizona is not a team
13:33
that, that, you know, that then launches from three very often.
13:38
Well, well, because Michigan's going to, I think Michigan's going to say, you know what?
13:41
We'll make it that type of game.
13:43
You want to make it three point contest, Arizona?
13:45
It's not your bread and butter.
13:47
You know, we will dare that early on and then we'll adjust if it's not going well for
13:52
Arizona can't hit the three, but you know, that, that, that drop coverage is so successful
13:56
because Mara is just ready at the rim and he's, he's the enforcer, okay?
14:02
So Mara and Crevice on paper, avenge Mara, that's how good of a player a die is.
14:10
I think for Michigan and for any team playing Arizona and really any team playing Michigan,
14:18
that's what makes it such a great matchup.
14:20
You got to be ready to punch.
14:23
You got to be ready for the fight because it's a battle.
14:26
It's a battle rooted in physicality.
14:28
Mara's just got to be ready for Crevice, Pete Awaka.
14:32
They're going to be, they're going to be trying to land the first punch.
14:34
They're going to try to mobilize Mara.
14:36
I don't know how successful they'll be, but they're going to try to.
14:40
Last one for you, what, what am I missing in this game?
14:45
Like what, when you look at all the storylines, everything that's, you know, we've obviously
14:49
covered this game from kind of a broad brush so far.
14:53
What are you looking forward to in this game that maybe, whether it's me,
14:56
or just, just generally that people aren't really necessarily paying enough attention
15:00
to that is going to play a huge factor in this one.
15:06
Number one, Dusty may spend to a final four.
15:09
When he steps on the floor, as a head coach, he's been to a final four.
15:12
Time and Lloyd has been as an assistant.
15:13
It's a different monster when you're a head coach.
15:15
Dusty knows this stage.
15:16
He knows what to expect.
15:17
He's going to be ready for that.
15:19
Here's the second thing.
15:20
I can't tell you how many times I've covered these games in the final four, and it's always
15:24
an unlikely hero, an unlikely supplementary shot maker.
15:30
Michigan's got the edge there.
15:32
You know, they don't be surprised if a train McKinney hits three threes or a Roddy Gale hits
15:36
three, three threes in this game or in the Mari Burnett has 18 points.
15:41
And you look up and you're like, wow, you know, he really stepped up.
15:44
Lendaborg and Kado were good, but they don't win the game without this guy.
15:48
Delorso does that for Arizona.
15:50
Michigan's got to make sure Anthony Delorso, there's been a couple times this year in the
15:53
big 12, you know, against elite teams, he would get hot and then they would win.
15:57
So who is the microwave?
16:00
That's who I'm looking at tomorrow.
16:02
Like I think in a game with elite two point defense, who can generate some tempo is going
16:07
to be very important, but to me, the supplemental shot making, there's going to be room for open
16:14
Michigan's got more shooters than Arizona.
16:16
Does it show up when these two teams clash?
16:20
Love the microwave reference is someone who grew up in the shadow of the palace of
16:28
We appreciate you so much.
16:29
We're going to continue on here, but that's John Fanta from NBC Sports and draft kings.
16:34
Anything you want to promote before, before we move off?
16:37
Well, we've got, we've got a super app coming at draft kings and, you know, betting, uh,
16:44
do it responsively.

tremendous offerings that you can check out.
16:56
That super app is going to be outstanding when it does come out and love, uh, love being
17:00
a DK partner and it's great to be with you, my friend.
17:03
I hope you enjoy the final four and I hope for your state, the Wolverines and that 26 year
17:08
drop, which if you're asking me for my prediction this weekend, it's that Michigan will cut down
17:14
Well, God willing and the creek don't rise.
17:17
Appreciate you, John and enjoy Indianapolis.
17:22
We're going to continue on.
17:23

19:06
All right, so it's going to be interesting to see I obviously got to love John's optimism
19:20
And you're like, I'm picking Michigan by two points.
19:24
I don't really have a score.
19:25
I don't think they'll score 90 in this one.
19:27
Arizona's defense is too good.
19:31
But like I said earlier in the week, there's definitely a black fit of negative expectations
19:37
on one end, but also Michigan's never lost in the final four in this round.
19:43
It's always been the championship game.
19:46
So this would be one of those moments where it would be good to see the late November, early
19:53
December, Michigan return.
19:56
The John Rothstein Michigan by TKO sometime relatively early in the second half.
20:03
It's not going to happen that way.
20:05
We're just going to have to deal with it.
20:07
But at least like that's, I think what John had to say was really good analysis, unlike
20:13
I can't remember his name.
20:14
So I never heard of him before.
20:17
I kind of want to pull this up.
20:18
This is the most hilarious thing I've ever seen.
20:20
I mean, not really the most hilarious thing of her.
20:22
But it's hilarious.
20:26
So SI had their predictions.
20:29
So CBS sports predicted Michigan to win ESPN split, but Jeff porzello and Medcalfe,
20:39
they were split just by like, you know, Arizona by two points, Michigan by two points.
20:43
But then sports Illustrated came out and had three people, Pat Fordy, Brian Fisher and
20:50
And all three of them picked Arizona.
20:53
I want to read Kevin Sweeney because it's hilarious.
20:58
Expect an all out battle from his physical standpoint.
21:01
And in the end, I think Arizona is just a bit bigger and tougher than Michigan.
21:08
I mean, he says more.
21:09
I'm just going to stop there.
21:13
If you wanted to know Michigan is bigger across the board, except for at point car.
21:20
So it's like, oh, you're predicating your idea of like you, it's just like, just tell
21:25
me you didn't watch Michigan.
21:28
Just tell, tell me you didn't watch it.
21:29
That's the reason why if you watch or listen to the squad show yesterday and they asked
21:33
me about the matchup between Illinois and Yukon, I gave a football break down because
21:39
I am not qualified to talk about those two teams.
21:44
I know very little, I mean, I remember obviously watching Michigan, Illinois, I've watched
21:49
a little bit of Illinois in the tournament, not with like a serious eye and same thing
21:56
The only thing I really know about Yukon is Terrace Reed, Dan Hurley and the freshman
22:01
that drained the three at the end of the game against Duke.
22:04
So like, just, just go ahead and tell me you didn't watch Michigan at all like that
22:10
you know nothing about Michigan and then you put it out there.
22:13
But to that point, the reason why I even bring that up is because I do feel like that
22:18
is this advantage for Michigan, because even though like, yeah, Mo Kreevus is only an
22:22
inch shorter than a dimarrow, you know, like otherwise, like the Wolverines just have more
22:29
like more ability to do some things just to in that, in that light.
22:35
Now, I think what John said about Michigan staying out of foul trouble where I like,
22:42
if this is, if this ends up being a game where a dimarrow has two fouls, like five minutes
22:47
in, I don't think Michigan will win.
22:51
Now they can, right, like they've got other players that can come in and everything,
22:56
but I just think like if you end up having to have it be Mo Mo, I was gonna say Mo Johnson,
23:04
Perez Johnson versus Mo Kreevus, I don't think that's going to work, honestly.
23:11
Maybe it does, but like that just kind of changes the thing, unless you bring in Trey McKenny
23:15
and he starts raining threes, which is certainly possible.
23:19
I don't know, but I think Michigan is going to need its bench to have its best game without
23:27
And of course, that's going to be easier said than none.
23:31
That's going to be a really difficult, but I hear is the other thing that I think
23:35
that shouldn't get lost in it and I wasn't going to say this to John and I've said this
23:39
on the show already.
23:41
I think that this game being Indianapolis bodes really well for Michigan because I'd
23:50
have to venture that it is going to be an electric crowd for the Michigan side.
23:56
And just I don't see Arizona matching that now Michigan fans, if you're there, get
24:02
up off your hands number one, because this, this is about as close to a home field
24:07
advantage for, I mean, it may be, it'll be different if it's Michigan versus Illinois
24:12
and the national championship game, but like this is going to be as close to home field
24:17
advantage for Michigan as there can be barring next year in Detroit.
24:23
So I think that it's going to be interesting to just to see how that kind of plays out.
24:28
But ultimately, I mean, I have very limited compared to, compared to John being able
24:34
to break down these individual matchups, like I've said, I haven't seen a ton of Arizona.
24:40
So I'm not really qualified to sit and be like, okay, let's really get deep into what
24:44
they bring to the table.
24:46
What I do know about Michigan is like, you just cannot have a game where Elliot Cado hoist
24:53
seven threes and only makes one.
24:55
You can't have a game where the Murray Burnett's only makes or from the free throw line,
25:00
unless he goes to the line like 15 times.
25:03
Like you just, you have to have some back court production outside of tray McKenny and
25:09
Rady Gale, you just have to and even so, those guys have to come to play.
25:16
And I think one of the good things about the schedule that has been is that Michigan has
25:23
gotten into some rumbles.
25:24
It got into the rumble and lost against Wisconsin.
25:26
It got into the rumble and lost against Duke.
25:29
It got into a rumble and lost against Purdue in the in the big tent tournament championship
25:35
I think that those are valuable lessons.
25:37
Now I'm not saying Arizona hasn't learned some lessons too.
25:40
They've lost a couple games too.
25:41
They lost them back to back.
25:45
I just think though Michigan has learned the lessons it needs to learn.
25:54
This isn't the type of game where it can just come in and just be like, yeah, we're Michigan.
25:59
They're going to have to want it.
26:01
They're going to have to have to be all out.
26:04
And this is not to bring back at you on Howardism, but like, this isn't all hands on deck
26:09
situation for competitors only, did I just, did I just ruin everything?
26:16
I think I just did.
26:17
So yeah, I think it's going to be an interesting game.
26:20
Can't wait to see it Saturday night.
26:24
I'll be watching the Fab five broadcast maybe probably.
26:29
I say that and I probably will watch it for a first half and then or maybe you like
26:34
a little bit and then just want the regular announcers.
26:37
That's probably how that's going to go.
26:39
But anyway, all right, the plan will be to have a show after the game probably won't
26:45
post until about two hours after since it takes time to prepare.
26:50
We don't do these live and we'll have a certain amount of writing to get done.
26:56
So, but there will be a reaction show, it just will probably be up around like, considering
27:01
as an 849 tip, we're probably looking at a midnight or 1 a.m. release one way or the
27:09
Nonetheless, look forward to that.
27:11
But that'll do it for the preview.
27:13
Thanks for watching.
