Reporting from the Isle of Kawaii, I'm Rachel Ann Goodman for K-Squid Radio.
0:05
I was wondering why you're here today.
0:09
I don't like that children and parents are being ripped apart,
0:13
and I feel like we're having our democracy stepped all over.
0:19
Wait, why are you here today?
0:21
They promised me a beer.
0:23
That's it, that's all I got.
0:24
So you're happier here than being on the couch?
0:26
Oh, definitely, yes.
0:28
Is there any one thing that particularly bothers you about what's happening?
0:31
I know there's a long list.
0:32
Yeah, there's a long list, the attacks on the LGBTQ community,
0:38
the attacks on democracy as a whole.
0:41
Those are huge to me.
0:46
Yeah, attacks on civil rights, attacks on LGBT, attacks on the immigrants, and the war.
0:56
What are we in this war for when our economy is going downhill?
1:00
Okay, so I'm talking to a protestor at LA LA.
1:04
Why are you here today?
1:05
I'm here because, like, some news that I saw, I made me so sad,
1:09
and the only way that I could not feel sad is to do something about it.
1:13
But it's mostly, I care about democracy, I care about human rights,
1:17
I care about empathy, treat everyone like how you want to be treated,
1:20
and so that's why I'm here for freedom.
1:23
I love America, I don't hate my country, I'm not paid to be here,
1:27
and the one thing that I want to do is to have America wake up,
1:31
and we need to vote in November and get control of the house
1:36
so we can impeach and convict Donald Trump.
1:41
Why are you here today?
1:43
Something got you out of it off the couch.
1:47
And because I can't stand the cruelty that's going around,
1:51
and the words that he's starting and the way he's treating people,
1:56
immigrants, we all immigrants, that's why.
2:00
What is your country of origin?
2:04
You have a long history of understanding these things.
2:08
I lived under the dictator's teenager, you know.
2:14
I don't want to be here.
2:15
I don't want to be here, my father fought.
2:19
First the Nazis, then the Communists, and he came here.
2:25
You know, he passed away a long time ago, but this was a free country.
2:31
This was a free democracy, and now what's happening?
2:37
All right, for Caseque Radio and Santa Cruz, I'm in Kauai,
2:40
I'm Ella Ele, and I'm here with.
2:43
Hi, I'm Amanda Kaufman, I'm an artist here,
2:46
while life conservationist, so here was some good people today.
2:52
Why is wildlife connected to maybe what's going on in Trump land?
2:56
Because we have federal programs for our wildlife conservation,
3:01
and on the front lines here, I work out on the military base as well.
3:06
So it's a big deal what's going on federally, and it impacts everything.
3:11
And people don't realize that sometimes.
3:13
So species could go extinct?
3:19
Yeah, without protections, and those have been, you know, rolling back.
3:22
So it's really important, in my opinion, to get out here for the,
3:26
not just the people, but for all life on the planet.
3:30
And if we all just took care of the life that we all value,
3:33
we wouldn't be in a situation.
3:35
I'm here at the No Dictators Rally in LA, and I'm talking with.
3:42
Lynn, why are you here?
3:43
I am here because I don't want to look back and say,
3:48
well, now that we're in fascism land, I wish I had done more.
3:53
Well, I'm basically here to help out with them.
3:56
I was just like, add more numbers.
3:59
You know, it's always nice to add on my person.
4:02
What do you think of what's happening in the world today?
4:08
You look like a young person.
4:10
What's the view from being, how old are you?
4:15
There's a lot of other people.
4:17
My age, I wasn't really interested in this kind of stuff,
4:20
at least, not standing out.
4:23
They do say more things on the internet.
4:26
But, you know, you don't see a lot of me, really.
4:31
So I've seen the same thing that he has with the ice raids.
4:36
Corruption and competence.
4:43
And President keeps getting richer and richer by the day.
4:46
Very wrong on so many levels.
4:52
I'm here just to support everybody.
4:54
And I'm glad there's a turnout.
4:56
I'm Rachel Ann Goodman here in LA LA,
4:59
at the No Dictators rally, and I'm speaking with.
5:04
And what's your role here?
5:06
I'm one of the organizers with Kauai Indivisible.
5:10
Ever since the 24 election,
5:14
we've been protesting.
5:16
And so today we're here in Kauai,
5:19
because we've had kings of Indivisible.
5:22
And we don't want to disrespect the Hawaiian culture.
5:25
We call this a No Dictators rally.
5:28
And this is our third one, October 15th, 2025.
5:32
We had 2,000 people come to our protest rally,
5:38
which was for us, No Dictators 2.
5:41
And here we are today at the first of three rallies going on
5:48
Here in LA LA, I've just been counting,
5:50
and we're about 150 people.
5:52
And there's also one going on at the same time
5:55
on the North Shore of Kauai, called Princeville.
5:58
And then the big one's going to be in Lihui,
6:01
the town center, in front of the county council historic building,
6:06
the lawn, the sidewalks, and then we'll have some food trucks
6:10
for afterwards so people get something to eat on the way home
6:14
So what do you hope the message would be
6:17
to people maybe who are sitting on their couch not coming out?
6:21
What would you like them to know about why this is important?
6:26
This is a really important time in our country.
6:29
We have to team up together all the people who care
6:33
about our democracy and all the rights and conveniences
6:38
that that has provided to us in America.
6:41
We've been so lucky, and right now so many things are threatened.
6:46
Reporting from the island of Kauai, I'm Rachel Ann Goodman.
