Psalm 32: The Weight That Lifted

There is a particular kind of misery that comes not from what has been done to us but from what we have done and refuse to say. David knew it well. "When I kept silence," he writes, "my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long." The image is almost paradoxical — a man roaring in silence, his very skeleton aging under the weight of unspoken guilt. His moisture, he says, was turned into the drought of summer. Sin unconfessed does not merely trouble the conscience; it desiccates the whole person, body and soul, like a plant cut off from water. And then the turn, which is almost shockingly abrupt: "I acknowledged my sin unto thee... and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin." No penance, no probationary period, no lengthy negotiation — just confession and then, immediately, forgiveness. It is as though God had been waiting at the door the entire time. The psalm ends with an image that deserves more attention than it usually gets: God promises to guide with his eye. Not with bit and bridle, like a horse or mule that must be forced, but with a glance — the way a father guides a child across a crowded room with nothing more than a look.
