Howie Rose, the brilliant radio broadcaster for the Mets, is going to call it a career after the 2026 season, and with him will go one of the great companions of summer.
The Mets are adding a new way to enjoy the sound of an MLB game. The league should take note of it.
And Sully opens the floor for questions, including his thoughts of Portland as an MLB city.

Well the start of the baseball season is right around the corner and this is going to be
a little bit of a bittersweet one for met fans because we're going to be saying goodbye
to frankly one of the best in the business of what they do.
Put it in the books for Howie Rose.

All right folks and also let me just quickly do the trivia question and get that one out
of the way.
What notorious 1930s figure try to buy the cubs and promise Babe Ruth.
He would also purchase his contract to come to Chicago.
And Anthony Hutful's 2324 says Al Capone is my guess.
Yeah, I mean, that may have been bluster.
It may have been apocryphal but Al Capone was a rabid Chicago Cubs fan and apparently befriended
Babe Ruth and wanted to buy the Cubs and buy Babe Ruth's contract and bring him to Chicago.
And you could say all you want about Al Capone being an owner of major baseball.
But is he any worse than some of the people that we've had.
We know he would have put a good product on the field eventually he would be forced
out.
But do you know what?
He would have gotten rid of that Billy Goat thing in a hurry.
Let me tell you something actually Billy Goat hadn't happened at that point.
Well, he would have let all the Billy Goats in.
They would have had a World Series championship more recent than 1908 and there would be
a little less waiting for Cubs fans.
Well, I know maybe he would have been a great one.
Maybe that's maybe that should have been the.
Example I've been saying this for a while.
There are a lot of billionaires out there doing some bad stuff in the world.
That's not a controversial statement.
There's a lot of billionaires who are actually like bond villains out there.
Have them buy major league teams and have their fun playing with major league teams and spending
money and showing off what they can do and building staves and palaces for themselves.
And I'd like to see someone instead of being in the tech world as a multi-millionaire doing
all sorts of stuff.
Buy the pirates and do that with the pirates by the Marlins get to live in Miami.
That's what if you're a billionaire think about how low a bar you'd have to clear to be
beloved in Miami.
You get to live in Miami be better than the Marlin owners spend money and pick up a ring.
I know it may have been apocryphal that story but I happen to love it.
I've got to say that one of the joys that I have of being a host of a locked on MLB is
I get to talk to you all and I get to hopefully be a companion during the course of a major league
baseball season like you come in you check in and there's a certain familiarity.
You know when we're doing the show and you kind of get an idea of the flow of the show.
I had been doing locked on A's as well for the last month or so but they're getting a brand
new host.
I'm excited about that.
Well in today's episode we're going to be talking a little bit about how voices can be
your companion during the regular season.
The fact that the Mets have a couple of interesting ideas of how they want to improve the audio
portion of entertainment in major league baseball and I think other teams should take it
even further.
We're going to be answering some viewer questions including my thoughts of Portland as
a major league city.
However we're going to start with the news of how we rose.
How we rose has been one of the Mets announcers since the mid 1990s and he is quite frankly
one of the best out there.
He is a remarkably talented broadcaster not just of major league baseball but other sports
as well and he announced that he is set to retire after the 2026 season.
That's going to be sad for bet fans.
I mean I remember when he took over in the mid 1990s I was living in New York at the
time but he has since become an institution for the New York Mets fans.
My cousin Dave who says big of Mets fan as you'll ever know always text me whatever funny
quote how he rose said whatever funny quip he said a way that he tied it into a movie
or a TV show that we all love some sort of reference to trading places and how we rose
has been able to be that perfect sort of then diagram of what I want in an announcer.
I want someone who loves the game he clearly does who has knowledge of the game.
He is an encyclopedia of Mets history but has fun.
My favorite announcer of all time I think the greatest announcer in baseball history was
Joe Gavrishio and if you go can go back and listen to games that he called in the 70s
in the 80s when he was announced with NBC I don't think anyone was ever better.
And how he rose is right up there and how he rose has been a Mets announcer when they
were dreadful in the mid 1990s and back in the world series in 2000 and dreadful again
in the mid 2000s and then terrific again around 2006 and called some of the biggest highlights
in Mets history including penance in 2000 and nearly a penance in 2006 and a trip to
the world series in 2015 and some of the absolute lowest moments including the giant collapse
in 2007 and last year which was a face plant of all face plants.
He's been doing he's been a Mets he's been part of the Mets broadcasting world since the
mid 80s but he basically took over when Bob Murphy left the Mets broadcast and he started
calling the games there and he has been second to none.
He is he is one of the best out there and by the way the Mets have outstanding announcers
and have a great announcing legacy.
Right now Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez is as good a television booth as you
are going to have and how he rose is one of the best I've ever heard in the radio and
for a while they had the from their first year in 62 all the way to the late 70s it was
Bob Murphy, Ralph Keiner and Lindsay Nelson every year until right around the time I started
following.
How he rose is going to go.
And by the way he's also somebody he's been a great announcer of other sports.
In fact I first realized how great he was when he very famously called the overtime goal
that sent the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup finals in 1994 that was an unbelievably
exciting time to be in New York and he famously when was it Stefan Mato.
I'm not even a huge hockey fan but everyone in New York got into it then and Stefan Mato
in was at the double overtime got the game winning goal to send the Rangers to the Stanley
Cup finals and he just yells, he scores, Mato, Mato, Mato, it was just a phenomenal call.
And when you lose people like how we wrote it by the way Godspeed how we rose you've earned
it he's in his mid 70s he could he's earned a right to retire and he's had some health
issues and I'm sure traveling the team is growing.
But it's sad when you lose a companion and the announcer is more than just someone who
describes the game.
He's a friend who's there watching the game with you.
I grew up with Ned Martin and Bob Montgomery in Boston and Ken Coleman and Joe Castiglione
on the radio and Joe Castiglione called games from the mid 80s all the way to 2024 and
he got to be the the Red Sack voice that you hung out with and listen to the games with
Jerry Remi was the same way when he took over he was like your funny friend who got to
see the games with.
When I first moved to New York in the early 1990s I arranged some of my classes so I made
sure I could listen to Phil Rosuto calling the games of course he didn't know the analytics
he wasn't that kind of person he was your crazy uncle that you're watching the games
with that companion you're there with and when you lose that person who has been there
for a long time who has been there to help make it seem timeless because it's been the
same narrator obviously Vince Scully narrowing from the Brooklyn Dodgers all the way to
what was it 2016 for the Dodgers it's that unifying voice that's always there and it's
a friend it's a friend you watch the game with it's a friend who's there who you can join
watching the game you know they're going to react in a certain way and when you lose
one of those people it is like losing a friend it is like someone who used to watch the
games with no longer there and there were people who dropped out recently John Sterling now
whether you liked him or not he was energetic and he was unique jokistically own as I mentioned
before you know that friendship that is there you get with those announcers I just remember
distinctly with my father who's the biggest San Francisco giant fan you would have ever
met in your life by the end of his life he started referring to the giant game not as put on
the giant game he would say put on crook and kite because those are the announcers you know my
crew go into a kiper put on crook and kite and John mill he loved John Miller and so those
friends go but new friends come in there terrific announcers out there one of the best announcers I've
ever heard is Jason Benetti who was formerly the announcer of the white socks now he's with the
Detroit Tigers and he's doing some national games the white he's really good he's really really good
but how he rose leaving it's gonna leave a hole in the heart of met fans it's gonna leave a hole
for me I'm not a met fan by instruction the imagination but I loved putting on a how he rose
announced game you know now that we have all this technology and absent everything like that we
can hear other announcers I think that that allows us to connect with some of the announcers that
some of the other fan bases have had when I first started listening to games on the radio broadcast
on the MLB dot com around 2003 or 2004 I got to listen to Ernie Harwell towards the end of his
career I got to listen Jack Buck towards the end of his career and the fact of the matter is
you got to see that connection you get to have that feeling of what the fans have and how that they
truly connected through the announcers and through well the friendships that you get but with that
being said the Mets are trying to do something new with their their experience of going to met the
game through sound and I think it's brilliant what they're gonna try to do and actually I think
it should lead to more innovation for ways that we can enjoy baseball as fans through what we hear
all right I am thrilled to be talking about our new sponsor MLB the show 26th the greatest video

every day or club is you get ad free versions of the show plus you get access to the discord channel
and you get to talk with people like your pal sully and other hosts tap the link on the show notes
or go to locked on mlb.supercast.com the meds are going to be doing a thing where they have
their radio broadcast no longer with a delay that you can listen to on an app while you're at the
ballgame because some people like to do that some people like to listen I remember those those old
timers and there are people when I grew up going to Fenway Park and then later when I went to
games of candlestick there would be people who had the the radio that they could be listening they
had a little earpiece in there they'd be listening to Ken Coleman and Boston or they'd listen to
I guess would be Lon Simmons would be was doing A's games then and um god who was doing the
oh Hank Greenwald was doing the giant games on the radio and now that there's this weird delay
you can't really line everything up and some people like hearing the broadcast while they're there
put your earbuds in please I'm gonna be watching the game there but I think that's that's an
interesting thing to do and I think that for a lot of met fans are gonna really enjoy doing that
they'll get at least one last chance to hear how we rose we'll watch the game live I remember my
friend Anna who I used to call Anna the goat farmer because of period time she was indeed a goat
farmer in Wisconsin and she got really interested in the A's in the mid uh 2010s while living in
Wisconsin and she went to her first brewers game and was stunned there was no play by play she
wasn't there was no play by play announcer she had trouble following the game because she'd only
watch games on TV where there's a play by play announcer so if you want to have that often you
put it in there but I think they should do that with all sorts of things with the broadcasts
we have the ability to watch the game like on MLB app on my on my television I can do that I can
watch the home announcer I can watch the road announcer unless it's a local game I live in Pasadena
so heaven forbid I can watch a Dodger game or an angel game because of really really valid blackout
rules that were really important around 1964 all blackout rules every single one of them needs to
be wiped out sorry trying to grow a game here trying to go a game but I could do things like I could
listen to the Spanish broadcast I could listen to the home broadcast I could listen to the road
broadcast they should have more options like that they should have more options with the you know I
have those options listen to be able to do that on the TV but they should have other types of
broadcasts as well they should have you know they've done simulcasts with like more of an analytics
based commentary because a lot of people were really into the old saber metrics crowd and
everything like that are you know want to hear some of the more advanced metrics that they don't
really bring up in a traditional broadcast that should always be an option there should also be
one where there's like interviews like a little roundtable going on while the game is being played
so it's not the you know they really in-depth play by play but it's like a conversation that's
happening between like between a panel of people could be guests like and this for these two
winnings we're gonna have such and such Brian Cranston's a huge baseball fan have him come in and
be a guest and talk about the game while it's happening you see their reaction some people may
want to enjoy a game like that instead of having the traditional TV broadcasts and that could all be
available click on this click on this you get to watch the same game in real time but the different
ways to do it and here is the other thing I want to have a baseball broadcast on the TV without
an announcer I want to have that option sometimes sometimes I don't want to hear the announcer
sometimes I want to have the experience of what it's like at the ballpark just having to you know
they're not they're not and all the other stuff that goes on that brings up another thing if we're
able to go to the app and have you listen to the play by play and people listen to people got
their buds and everything like that let's adjust to the world people are using their devices and
don't act like people not watching the game and looking at something else is a new thing I don't
want to hear any like in my day we never took our eyes off the game you're full of it you are
writing in your scorecard you're having a conversation there's a whole play the Joe Montanian
company did called Bleacher Bums which about all the people in the center field who are
tanning themselves having a beer striking them conversations there has been there's not one
baseball fan out there who's watched the game with their completely with their eyes on it the
whole time every one of you listening to me right now has had a moment where you're at the ballpark
you're watching the game you're striking up a conversation with a friend you check the out of
town score you look at the advertisement over there you see you wave to someone over there you see
something weird happening and you look over and you ask wait how to get on second every one
of you have done that and if you haven't the reason you haven't is because you're a liar
so people are now using their devices and everything like that putting things in your earbuds
that's the same thing is filling out the scorecard it's the same thing is reading the yearbook
during the game and look at oh wait wait what happened we've always done that don't don't say that
you haven't okay well if that's the case then let's mix up the sound at the ballpark
got news for you it's too loud it's too loud I like having a little bit of downtime
I like that not every moment should have someone going if you like them
put that on you can hear the bomb bomb bomb bomb when you play the play here that too
but some of us want to just hear the game in the organ and maybe some chatter and maybe the
home of the crowd not everyone needs to be like this this the not everything has to be like
you're watching yo gaba gaba sometimes every once in a while a moment of quiet is nice
so have the game itself be relatively quiet the sound of the game sound of the organ
now batting mokey bats or whatever is going on if you want the more stuff you can hear that
they'll always have stuff on the boards they'll always have stuff playing and they could cater it to
you because Lord knows everyone knows the algorithm said hey Sully since you're sitting there at the
stadium maybe you'd like a nacho maybe maybe I would maybe I would before we have the technology
to do that and make the experience better well why aren't we doing that and by the way in tomorrow's
show I am going to there's a little teaser for tomorrow's show for tomorrow's show I am going to be
talking a little bit about how the St. Louis Cardinals are doing something that is not a little smart
it is extraordinarily smart and I don't know may put more butts in the proverbial seats
hey this is Jeff Carr from lockdown reds and you know I've reached the point in my life where my

partly so I can't it's a little faster when I do it that way but we got a
couple people are in the chat room there saying hello to each other if I by the way Miguel if I
butcher your name please forgive me Miguel Ledesma. Nailed it. 1790 I'm sure that's not when you were
born as a met fan I will miss how he rose on the radio side at least we still have Ron Keith and
Gary Cohen the TV side the best booth and baseball it's really one of them it's really really
they're really terrific really terrific good luck to whomever is taken over for how we rose you know
it's a it's a they're big shoes to fill they're big shoes to fill I'm gonna go through I got a
couple of stuff to say for viewer mail but I'm probably only gonna get to one of them which is
from Sammy boy who I think Sammy boy maybe Sammy boy maybe on on the yeah he's in the chat room
right now I'm gonna read one of the stuff you posted here Sammy boy which was a celly were you
always for Portland MLB I thought you were Montreal and Utah I got my shirt for Montreal I love
Montreal as a baseball market I love the expose and I sad that they're going I love that there's
a team in Washington DC but I always thought there should have been a team in Montreal and I felt
the the expose never got a fair shake but yes Portland has always been one of my
picks for a babes league baseball team and I actually thought if we were under the assumption
that the Bay Area was not a good place for two major league teams and evidence has shown that
the the A's probably should not have moved there they probably either should have stayed in Kansas
City or try to make it work in another market but I'd love that the A's were in Oakland so it's
tough for me to say something like that but Portland has I said that the A's had to move from Oakland
I thought Portland was a much smarter market than Las Vegas first of all that you have the
fielders I think is now called Providence Field forgive me as it's changed a lot which used to be
the home of the Portland Mavericks they would could be able to do a renovation of that to turn it
into a baseball stadium as well as a home of their their MLS team which is extraordinarily popular
there now I'm not saying there'd be a great solution but at least it would be a better solution
than them crashing on the couch in Sacramento for three or four years which is still ridiculous
that they're doing that and I think it's also the type of sports market that would be conducive
for baseball in that baseball is a sport majorly baseball is a sport of which you need local support
it's not a big national star driven league like the NBA or that you know spectacle that the
NFL is you need local support you need fan base that has people who are deeply rooted in their
city not transplants like you have in Las Vegas and Portland is that there are people who are
proud to be Portlanders you have people who love their teams who love their their you know all
the sports they have there it's a terrific sports town by the way watch the battered basters
of baseball on Netflix which is a terrific documentary about the minor league team that existed
in Portland during the 1970s and I think that they would take to the Portland A's or Portland
raise or Portland whatever team expansion team I'd rather not be the white socks I'd rather not be
the raise I don't want to move teams around they got to expand in Portland be I think an ideal
market they'd also have a very natural rival with the Mariners that's one of the other reasons
why I thought the A's have a quirky history Portland's a quirky town they'd be in the AL West they
have a rivalry with the Mariners everything made sense there and I look I would live in Portland
a heartbeat if Portland is looking for a a special ed teacher slash podcaster hit me up send me
something at sunny baseball podcast on Instagram and if I lived in Portland and they got an MLB team
I got news for you they may become my team absolutely they may become my team a big fan of Portland
diamond project I'm all I think baseball is going to expand they have to expand Nashville is the
very obvious spot for a team absolutely is I would love there for a be a team in Montreal I can't
help but think that ship may have sailed and I think Portland is the other side Salt Lake City
could be a great place absolutely Salt Lake City could be a great place Vancouver could be a great
place I don't understand why Austin isn't being talked about because that would be a terrific
be the first team in there I think Omaha would be a good place they can have a place to play
and it's a decent sized city and there's a lot of corporate money there but Portland I think
Portland and Nashville are the two that I think are the best cases to have a team make a great case
for Charlotte you can make a solid case for New Orleans but to me if I were up to me and I want
to end this room where it is not up to me Nashville and Portland would be where I would put
I'm actually baseball team so there you go Sammy boy and Nick W I got to bring this up because
like the last day I could do this I Nick W 22689 says your idea to start the season with an all-star
game is always an intriguing one what the WBC has delivered has essentially been a version of that
yeah I've been saying for years you start the season with an all-star game don't have it be in
the middle of season I haven't have it be at the beginning it's the great introduction to the season
see all the stars you get excited about it but you're right the WBC did that you got to see
judge you got to see Otani you get to see you know Bryce Hoppe you got to see all the big stars play
you know Paul Schienz is playing there you got to see you know Akuni playing all these terrific
stars playing in there and it gets you it gets it's got every whether you like the WBC
BC or not or whatever you care about it it's got us all really pumped for this regular season and so
I'm really excited about that um you know this was uh you'd want to live outside of Portland
