Keith longtime 76ers beat writer Markfars at a long time Philly sports talker Keith,

we got to get the road trip we're going to end on.

We're going to talk about him beat status because we do this big talk about this on Friday

about oh, he's getting reevaluated, he got reevaluated and nothing was announced by

the 76ers.

So we'll get to that clutch grimes, grimes, shines as a matter of fact, especially in

the fourth quarter of what we'll get into right out of the gate.

The sweep of a week and back to back, they give us a little bit of a against the Brooklyn

nets, but they win thanks to Quentin Grimes, then they have some struggles there late against

the Portland Trailblazers, at least though they're a 30 win team and they're able to pull

out that victory.

They sweep the back to back.

There hasn't been a lot to smile about with the 76ers over the last couple of weeks

really Keith, but coming away with two wins over the weekend before a tough road trip,

certainly something to smile about.

Yeah, typically I would say, Mark, what are we talking about, dude, they beat Brooklyn

nets, they beat Brooklyn Trailblazers like, you know, in the Brooklyn nets really, anybody

who was good enough to probably play really well against them sat the bench, right, didn't

play that day.

But when you look at the 76ers, they were a team that just got Molly Watt body trope, right,

they were a team that lost three out of four, you know, the team that basically, they really

didn't have any one playing, you know, any, any, like we talked about VJ Escom, the only

starter who really played well, you could say Dominic Barlow, but if we all know if everybody

was there, Barlow wouldn't be in a starting lineup.

So I'm going to give them credit for these two victories, right?

Because to me, it was kind of like one of those things where we look at it and you say,

look, fellas, what are you guys going to do?

You guys are collecting NBA paychecks, you know, you guys have been on the team, you guys

have been saying, give me some minutes and I'm going to step up and produce, you know,

talking about Quentin Grimes, a guy talking about you want $25 million, right?

Now again, he finally looked like the Quentin Grimes of old, the last game, right?

You know, we're talking about a guy, another guy, Justin Edwards, you know, he averaged

31, excuse me, averaged 17 points in the last three games that he played, right?

So that's the, he did well, he shot three for five from three, the last game

after shooting 0 for five, the previous two.

So he's stepping up.

So to me, I have to give him credit for these wins.

Now again, they beat the bottom of the barrel type of squads, but they showed us that

they have a pulse and they came out and they played, played, played well to me.

Yeah, I was getting ready to just do the, you know, do a show on the Brooklyn Nets win

with the typical, hey, you know, they still need the wins.

The Sixers have a banged up team too.

If the Sixers went into it with just VJ Edge come and down Barlow and no max in the season,

how many wins would they have on the season?

No, maxing, no, and B, no, Paul Drew, how even are these teams?

And then they get out to like a 28 point lead and I'm getting ready for that.

Yep, they did exactly what they're supposed to do against the team like the Brooklyn Nets.

And then the Nets take the lead in the fourth quarter.

You start sweating and then Quentin Grimes just takes over in that fourth quarter.

He gets 15 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter against the Nets.

Then last night, similar situation.

You see the Blazers start to nip at the heels of the Sixers.

They end up taking the lead.

Sixers end up taking back control.

Grimes comes up with 14 of his season high 31 points in the fourth quarter against Blazers.

So I'll do the math for everybody in the, just the fourth quarter alone in the last two games.

The back to back over the weekend, Quentin Grimes came up with 29 points and just those two quarters.

That's clutch and look, this was the Quentin Grimes that we saw last year.

It just takes everybody being out of the lineup for him to kind of hit go or hit turbo mode.

And it obviously takes everybody else being out of the lineup for Nick Nurse to start calling up plays for Quentin Grimes.

And yesterday he said they were sending a lot of high screens so the guys would get into the lane and be able to score points in the lane there.

And Quentin Grimes certainly did that.

And on top of that, one of the big numbers that came out of the weekend, really, especially yesterday's game was that the Sixers out scored, despite only having seven threes against the Blazers, they scored 60 points in the paint to help them win that game.

And that to me was the biggest difference in it.

But all at all, it comes down to Quentin Grimes, be able to get those buckets.

Yeah, it came down to Quentin Grimes being able to get those buckets.

You know, it was one of those things where, you know, Quentin Grimes is showing us that these games, what he could do when he has the ball.

Now again, it would be great to see if Quentin Grimes could do that against, let's say, Detroit, right, or or let's say when they go to Denver, right, that's going to be a big test for Quentin to do it.

But again, it showed us that he can have a certain type of role.

Now again, Brandon, it was against two struggling ball squads, but they depended on him and he did it.

The next step for Quentin to do is, hey, man, let's see what you can do against the Denver Nuggets, right.

Let's see what you can do when, you know, certain guys are injured against another quality playoff caliber team because he's going to have to step up and and continue to do it because, you know, right now, it looks like Quentin, you look great.

But you only look great against these tanking squads. Now, let's see what you can do in meaningful games.

On the other side of it, and I agree, oh, hardly, would you make a VJ edge come in the challenge from Nick Nurse, like he needs to shoot 20 shots.

Like we see him playing against the nets, thinking only had 13 shots against the nets. Actually, I have it right here in front of me.

Yeah, 13 shots. He was six to 13 for 16 points. He had 10 points in the first quarter against Brooklyn. And I'm thinking, you think I was thinking, this is exactly what you need, VJ, you need to hit turbo. You need to hit go.

You need to be the guy to score 10 points right out of the gate. Six points. The next three quarters combined. He gets the challenge yesterday. He only shot 18 shots. But he had 18 points on those 18 shots.

I'd love I'd love to see VJ try to get a little bit more active and trying to score the basketball for his team. Now, he also had 12 rebounds. He had seven assists. He had seven assists against the nets 12 rebounds against the Blazers.

But when it comes to scoring the basketball, you definitely want to see him. I think be more aggressive.

You do, but also is like what type of shots are you going to get? You know what I mean? Like he had 18 shots, but he shot eight for 18, right?

He was one for five for three. And then it's also not and I get what Nick is saying. I mean, he did that with Tyree's Maxi, but sometimes when you look around and you see that another teammate is cooking.

You know, other guys are being more efficient and teams are trying to get the ball out of your hand. You know, sometimes you got to make that pass because, you know, my thing is, you know, you're out there gunning. You're doing this. You're doing that and shots aren't falling. And then guys are looking at you like, bro, like winged the ball. So I'm open. You know what I mean? I'm open. And sometimes unfortunately that's what the six is offense looks like at times where you got a guy.

He's like going for sell. Like, you know what I mean? The ball doesn't swing. And then next thing you know after the game, Nick Nurse will come out and say, hey, well, yeah, we didn't move the ball. Right? So, you know, I mean, when you're shooting eight for 18.

It's like, okay, what are you going to do shooting on for 20? You know what I mean? No, right, right. You know, so when you got other guys who are baking, so I'm not mad at him like that. Now again, six to 13. You probably need to shoot the ball more.

Now three for 14. You look at it and you're saying yourself. It's not really working on a shooting aspect, especially when you're old for five. That's what he did two games ago.

So it's like, what else are you bringing to the game? Like, can you, are you grabbing rebounds? Are you getting assists? You know, what else are you bringing? So totally, you know, I mean, I think that is certain games where you, you got to keep.

But then in other games where nothing's falling that you got to say, hey, I'm still trying to win. So I got to do other things.

Yeah. And normally he is. Like I said, the rebounds or the assist, whatever it was. And I will say that it was interesting when he was asked about it after the Brooklyn win when they beat the Brooklyn nets on Saturday afternoon.

They asked him in the locker room saying, you know, Nick has challenged you to take 20 shots. He was like, how many, how many shots I take today? I think he was expecting that he took 17 or 18 shots.

And when they said 13, he was like, oh, damn. Yeah.

Like, okay. All right. That was fair to your point. That was fair. 13. You want to see him do more than that.

I'm excited I'm excited I'm excited it's funny because Nick nurse said that before the game to like he said yeah he's doing stuff he wasn't really he wasn't really forthcoming so this is telling me is that joelle doesn't want the media to know what's going on and they don't want to upset joelle like typically when you stuff like this happens they don't want the player to get upset or disappointed because he feel like

like in other words the players in control a lot of times right so it's one of those well don't say how I'm doing right now and don't disclose any of my information is just keep it a secret and typically they want to make everything as comfortable and for the player so he doesn't get in the back.

That move and he may like delay his return you know so he doesn't do it and and you know at times they don't know sometimes they don't really know because they have an idea but it could be up to joelle like okay for instance you can return but it's all about pain threshold.

So if he says he's willing to go and come back then he can play but if he's not willing to come back right now he ain't going to play so you know that's what it it could be but yeah they even afterwards what's today the day is Monday yeah nothing has been disclosed since then nothing I'm going to talk to you to anything now.

All right he's on the court doing stuff all right I want to make this disclaimer all right Keith I haven't been holding out on you I am not a doctor in case I've guided you the wrong way in thinking what I am I'm not a doctor I am certainly not treating joelle and bead but here's my best guess with my communications degree from the great temple university.

March 25th is when joelle and bead is going to come back I don't want him to come back before then I think March 20 I know I honestly don't I because look I've been saying all throughout this for the last two years the regular season as much as you can obviously look at continuity and chemistry and all that great I'd love for that to happen but I also think the more important thing is joelle and bead is this healthy.

As he can be for the post season March 25th is when Paul George comes back March 25th you're not playing the Oklahoma City Thunder you're obviously not playing the Denver Nuggets you got the Nuggets the King the Kings and Sacramento Utah the jazz in Utah you come home on that Monday the 23rd to play OKC then Paul George is available to play Wednesday.

That Wednesday the 25th against the bulls that point on you got 10 games left in the season you're not going to have Tyrese maxi out there most likely until maybe the week after.

To me it's the camaraderie starts when Paul George comes back and Paul George is back get joelle and bead back on the floor and I think by that point if they're already tip toe in the line right now about oh miss three games don't re-evaluate is going to miss another three games miss seven games whenever might be.

Hold out until the 25th and that's when I would unleash him on the rest of the NBA schedule I think after that you only have one more back to back left on the season.

Yeah you have one more back to back left on the season after that and then after that you're gravy so March 25th when joelle when Paul George is back that's when I say unleash joelle and bead.

Yeah I mean I don't know I think they need to get them out there and play I honestly do I mean because we're talking about you got 10 games and you're probably going to prepare for a play in tournament.

You know Paul George is going to be rusty the timing is going to be all the same with joelle.

Well you know what I get what you're saying I mean here's the thing if joelle and bead comes back against Sacramento people are going to look at it like it wasn't ducking joke or smoke.

Absolutely going to go to Denver right and then if you come so then if you if you don't come back against Sacramento then you know you coming back on the final game with a road trip.

But then you got Oklahoma City did you got a play so if he doesn't play in that game people are going to say all he didn't want to play Oklahoma City so you know I understand what you're saying.

But at the same time I think joelle has to play in these games I mean here's a point before he got injured what were we saying we were saying joelle and bead is back he was good he was proving everyone wrong he's playing like a beast oh look at him they can't win without him when he when he missed games.

And now all of a sudden we're saying okay March 25th that's when him and Paul George is going to come back right then Max he's going to come back.

But it's like you know I don't know like you know Jason Tatum is out there playing with his teammates you know they wanted him to get 20 games in right I mean you got these other guys playing.

Then all of a sudden it's going to be like okay we're going to try to bring these sixes together within you know Paul George and then be the final 10 maxi the final seven and see if they can win that they could go far and I think going to happen captain like I think you just need to get out there in my opinion that's just.

Yeah I agree with you I mean snap our fingers i'm sure we both want to see joelle and bead on the court against Joker tomorrow night certainly but if I if i'm betting on it I bet that's the game he comes back I bet he comes back when PG comes back and he sits out this road trip sits out OK say that way he I mean look you could call it duck in Joker you could call it duck in the defense the defending champions in OK say.

But I think it just comes down to wait I could get 10 games under my belt really eight games under my nine game nine games under my belt maybe because you got the one more back to back.

I'm going to do that I think if and I agree it's it's joelle and beads decision more than it's the 76ers decision I love from being on the court for this whole road trip and I think it happened I think the most likely day he comes back.

Unless this is a far worse injury than we're being let on but if it was I don't think he'd be on the court I think he comes back on the 25 that's just my my gut instinct following joelle and bead I think he comes back on that 25th and him and Paul George try to get on the same page before maxi's back I think that's just before Kelly Ubrace should be back as well and then.

Hopefully get this version of Quentin Grimes coming off the bench for the sixers keep that scoring going obviously when we come back let's take a look close to look at this road trip we just mentioned it will get a little bit more into it when we return this is locked on 76ers locked on 76ers YouTube channel back right after this.

So here's how it works with this road trip once again rattled off six is going to be in Denver tomorrow night for a 10 o'clock tip off six or the Thursday night in Sacramento to take on the kings at 10 o'clock and then Saturday night they rounded all out in Utah against Ace Bailey and the Utah Jazz at 930 before coming home that Monday to take on OK see so far this little time here without.

Maxie without and be without pg extended period obviously without Kelly Ubrae sixers to and oh not too bad can they take it on the road and build on that success key.

No no no offense no offense I mean you know you know who knows what's going to happen against Sacramento but I don't see them being in Denver no I agree not going to be Denver but I got.

Here's almost say I'm going to keep good vibes go there's going to be a little hitch in the giddy up there against the nuggets alright and then they face a at this time what an 18 win Sacramento King's team and then they face Ace Bailey and the Utah Jazz that game could be a little bit of a rough one as well but that's a game BJ has come I think it's going to get up for because remember he didn't play against Ace Bailey and the Utah Jazz in their first meeting of the two teams of the two clubs.

So I think I think BJ is going to get up a little bit extra for that we're not the demand needs more of a chip on the shoulder but.

Oh anybody else wanted a spale here let me let me show you what I could do I think you can certainly see.

That type of performance from BJ has come in that one especially when you already have his head coach saying hey by the way can you get 20 shots please.

Can you go out there and do 20 shot be great that be great so look not a great.

Thing in the middle of the middle but you could win your five games the one in the middle is against the team like the the.

The Denver Nuggets so that's a rough one sixers in the rebounding game obviously missing Joelle and bead.

And going up against Nicole Yoke which is certainly going to be a tall order pun intended for the 76ers center on this on on this squad right now Keith but.

I'm going to go ahead and give high hopes that on the three game road trip they go two in one with an unfortunate and embarrassing loss the Denver Nuggets.

Yeah I mean to me the main game is going to be the game against Sacramento like let's see what Sacramento wants to do you know who plays who doesn't play because they do have former NBA all stars right so I do think that.

Why they may be a little older I do think depending on how it is like that they desperately want to get a feel good victory.

So I do think that if they play against the 76ers backups that could be an interesting game to where they could win at home I think so you know that's just nothing.

It ain't going to be easy nothing's going to be easy but they're bad now they're bad they're bad team they're bad team but we'll see.
