RAYS POSTCAST: The Tampa Bay Rays WALK OFF the Houston Astros to clinch a playoff spot

About this episode

The Rays walk off the Astros to win 3-1. This was one of the best wins of the year for the Rays. The offense got off to a slow start, getting shut out through the first 4 innings. But Victor Mesa got the Rays on the board with a solo homer in the 5th to make it 1-1. Mesa continued his strong play with his 3rd straight game with a homer. The game stayed 1-1 partly because of another stellar outing by Drew Rasmussen. he went 7 IP only giving up 1 run. But the moment of the season so far came in the 9th inning. Junior Caminero destroyed a 2 run walk off homer to win the game and push the Rays into the playoffs. The Rays are the first team in the MLB to clinch a playoff birth. They will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow night vs the Astros.

This is the Lockdown Podcast Network celebrating 10 years of your team every day. This is the Raze Post-Cast. Your Instant Game Reactions is a Tampa Bay Raze. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. Hello and welcome to the Tampa Bay Raze Post-Cast. Your spot for Instant Raze Reaction after every single game. My name is Jonathan Shields. My goodness. What a game. What a moment. And you know, you don't have enough edges to describe it. If you guys are new here, my name is Jonathan Shields. We are live after every single race game now, throughout the playoffs. And now we can officially say the playoffs because junior commentator has a walked the race off into the playoffs. We're going to talk about how the job is not done for this race team even though they clinch the playoffs, but how your ass was then shoved once again. What a moment this was. We're really going to dive into that and why this will go down to history as one of the better Raze moments.

But first, I mean, we got to talk about the race walking it off for the playoffs. This is what you'll be talking about. So it was such an interesting game because the the race really guy, I won't say dominant, they got outplayed for a majority of the game. And it was Drew Rasmussen who didn't have his best stuff. It was keeping them in it. You know, it's definitely saying you don't have your best stuff, but they gave up a hits, but he pitched around it because they didn't walk anyone. And then you have the raise with the pseudo bullpen day in our struggling and to get really anything substantial going. And the Astros had the choice to put either a bra you or or hate or in and and they chose a bra you. I don't know if that was right season wrong decision, but it starts with Jonathan around his double and he just missed a home run by a few feet. And then junior common arrows, no doubt or home runs. I mean, is there a better sound in baseball than that? I mean, just what a moment.

And yes, we're going to talk about the moment in more detail a little bit later, but you know, that was just a special special atmosphere, a special swing for a special player, which brings us to our turning point of this game. And to reveal where the game was once or lost, it's the turning point probably the easiest turning point of the whole year, the walkoff home or by junior and just just think about this for a second think about where the raise were last year, the raise last year by this time we're basically out of contention. And junior's having this monster season and people are saying, Oh, it's because he's at Steinbeer and our own because he won't do this when he's in a real part. How's 40 homeers for you, but before the third week of this September, how's 40 homeers for you with 15 games left in the year? It's guys an animal. This guy is he's the next Aaron judge, you know, he's one of the five best hitters in baseball. You know, I don't take this guy for granted. He's a special talent who rises to the moment every single time. That was his moment and he went out there and he captured it.

That's a moment I'll never forget that's a moment a lot of raised fans would never forget that there's there's walkoffs, right? But there's walkoffs when you clinch stuff, you know, and you know, just think about what what this with this city and with this area has been through the last three years with the hurricanes, and I know a lot of you guys like myself know people or yourself were affected with flooding or what any sort of thing from the natural disaster and you have the hurricane melting which comes through and rips off the drop roof and the raise our displaced just like so many citizens were and the race go through that. It goes through that go through that season and it always felt a little bit weird because they weren't really at home and then back when the raise were getting back into their home. A lot of us or a lot of residents were finally getting back into their homes. There's some people still even back in their homes and the race have this magical season when they're back into the trap all right now capped capped off by the franchise player, one of the 10 best players in baseball, and no doubt walkoff Homer to clinch a spot in the playoffs. I mean, it really did just does not get does not get better than that. You know, what a what a moment for a special player and for all those reasons, juniors are playing the game.

This is the walk done player of the game. You know that I said in the mason Miller game when they caught the ball and went over the wall that it was something I have a storybook right if you told me that I wouldn't believe it. And this was another thing just out of story, but you kind of felt you felt the moment building up right there, whether it's the guy's people with m o b dot com with the raise did a great job, you know, capturing the moment and you know juniors went up there and absolutely obliterated baseball like he's done all year. It just absolute no doubt or one of seven off the bat and ball game, you know that that that that that that's all it was, but you know the moment guys I I've everyone watching is what I forget that moment, you know, and yes, it's maybe it's premature, but look the raise of the first game, clinch playoff, you got to make it before you can do any damage and the race have officially made it now there will be other teams that are close behind and now in the big in the big picture of things. The Yankees are probably going to win today you got to keep that three game week i've said when it gets to two, you know yes two and three what's the difference what you know, but when it gets to two is when you know you start to start to maybe gritch your teeth a little bit and then you know it's a little bit different, but in my opinion you have to get to New York at least at least three games up on them before that, but you know all this about that with so much in this game just not going the raise way whether it was coming off the long road trip.

No off day after the road trip, you know the end of the season were 140 semi games in the year and then there's moments like that that just give you a jolt going forward and you know there's so much more in this game to break down we would touch on the pitching which held the ass shows to just one run, but you know it was just moments that when you go through the season when you go through the seasons of raise baseball they did a great Montaillet forgot what point was the game where they showed the different times at the race of clinch. In the celebration I was there when they clinched the playoffs in. Had to vent 2010 I think I was there in 2010 when they won the division and I remember when a lot of people went home after the initial celebration and a bunch of players came back out and they're explained strange champagne all over the fans and what not it you know I don't know if the race will celebrate this playoff birth I'm sure the post game you guys would know this more this playoff birth like that or if they're way for the division but you know I'm sure the post game you guys would know this more this playoff birth like that or if they're way for the division but you know I'm sure the game is going to be a little bit different. I'm going to say this is going to upset this a lot this year just just don't take these moments for granted you know this community deserves this this city deserves this this team deserves this and us as fans deserve this what a moment for this team and we still have so much more to break down you know we we have to talk about we have to talk about your ass for somebody we talk about the guy that through seven enemies of one run ball Brian Baker by the way he's back he has it's fully hydrated in no longer sick and we'll also touch on how the jobs not done.

The race of a lot of work to the one division all that and more right after this. This episode is brought to you by Amazon a big thanks to our friends at Amazon for this limited ad break. This back school season spend less on your kids with Amazon we don't know how crazy is back the back school shopping experience can be it starts with a few items on the list and suddenly your shopping for supplies clothes lunch gear tacking about 10 other things you didn't see coming at ads of fast. When you buy close to back school then suddenly you can as a gross virtue weeks later and you're right back to where you started sometimes it genuinely feels like they're growing faster than you can budget for. When your kids definition of need for back so shopping is a lot different than your definition of somehow the list keeps getting longer every time you look at him explain the need first one conundrum this time of year has just become an annual part of the process. So remember with Amazon's little back school prices just spend less of your kids that really you don't spend on them is that you haven't spent on them. Shut back school Amazon is spend less on your kids. If you guys are in the life please make sure leave a like and comment there's no reason why we cannot leave a leave a like and comment after that craziness that was that game so.

Leave a like and comment with that being said let's get to our X factor of the game today. It's time to reveal who made the biggest under the radar. It's time to reveal who made the biggest under the radar impact with today's X factor. You know you were asked was and kept the raise in the game you know seven and he said eight hits there's a lot of traffic on the base pass and whether it was the clutch double playing the third. You know whether it's just big time moments throughout the game you know that's that's what drew does he pitches through big moments he gets out with rhymes and score position he just kind of crushes your will one step at a time it was efficient. I mean seven and he's in 92 pitches with all that traffic. It just shows how it was and you know he didn't allow the he didn't allow the big hit he didn't allow you know the two or three run homer it was just dink and dunk from the a show that can never get the big hit. And a lot of the has to credit drew assets and he's awesome once again again there's maybe five guys in baseball I pick over him maybe to to to start game one of World Series or whatever how you want to classify to be your ace.

I mean you're asked what's the bone of five top five pitcher in the American League. I think easily and you can make it hard you can definitely top 10 pitcher baseball and you need guys like this at their best going forward especially in October. But Tyler Wells I thought by the way was absolutely disgusting some of the stuff that he was doing maybe with Kelly struggles maybe he's the eighth inning guy I don't know I don't want to bash Kevin Kelly too much but you know Wells has been a welcome addition and then obviously Brian Baker just I love how the passion that he plays with every single game. It's just absolutely awesome but the reason why the race will be tied again because Victor Mesa continues to be amazing another homer less three straight games with a homer for Victor Mesa Junior. You know we say a lot of times in the World time with football basketball base weight he's just a dude right and that's one of the highest confidence you can get Victor Mesa to do and whatever you want to cut it just just a big time just a big time player man and he is a guy that you wanted the middle of the line of come to play. I mean he a guy that in spring training in the beginning of the year is not someone we really even talked about as someone that could impact the team this year and here he is time and time again impact the team in a big time way but with all that being said you know the job is not done the job is to win the American League and the

Fetchy to go on and win the World Series and you know the Yankees they're going to beat the Mets they're up three runs going into the ninth but you need to maintain that lead you know the Yankees aren't going to win forever I'm sure this win for the race going to crush some souls for the Yankees but you know we we highlighted the stretch you guys have been listening or watching to this show for a while now we've highlighted this stretch when the Yankees play the Rockies the Mets and the twins and the Rays play the the Braves the Astros the A's the Red Sox and then the Yankees is it's unequivocally an usual stretch for New York but you know the Rays also took care of business and swept the Rockies when they played them right so we've had this flip throughout the year every team has to play everyone and right now the stretch a little bit tougher for the Rays but they got to get through it because you know the job is not done you got they got to keep winning games and I believe what the the Rays are one two two wins away from 90 crazy I mean what was over under 78 and they've already blown past that so but the job is not done job at this point so one division and keep rolling from there but tomorrow

the Rays as Rays just kind of pushed everyone up a start here it will be Ian Seymour going for the Rays against we talked about Peter Lambert yesterday for the Astros he pitched earlier this year against the Rays and was awesome five and two thers of no run baseball his last time I give a 300 or seven to the Dbacks 88 the 3670 all right he's been really good Ian Seymour's last time out struggled and a lot of times the Rays a little bit concerned so hopefully he's re-invigorated and ready to give a really good performance tomorrow Ian Seymour up to nine wins so far on the year and then Sunday Friday fall at the real pitch Sunday but we'll preview that game tomorrow you know just kind of looking ahead the Rays will not have Martinez or Rasmussen in the Boston series as well so just looking ahead to that as well hopefully we get both

Martinez and excuse me and Rasmussen which I think that they will both pitch and the New York series but again that's looking way ahead but again if you guys are on the live as we get to the comments please make sure to leave your liking comments we got a jack here he says that was amazing walk it off clinch the playoffs spot clinch back to back 40 home reses and what is winning junior spotlights on you and he and he loves the moment I mean he loves the moment that there's some guys where the moment shows up and they don't want to be in the moment they're more of a secondary guy junior's that guy wants to be in the moment we go to Scott here he says unbelievable awesome game thanks again for being here all season for us play off bound raise up the post-cass are not stopped in the playoffs the raise will be in the playoffs and so we think for the kind words got as we go to Gary says post season bound hopefully the vision clinch is next we are starting to ask or not watch junior intentionally I didn't think about that a lady they didn't raise our ten of known games by started by rise post all start break that's awesome it's a great step there Gary as as Gary goes John that will be will there be an

extended post-cass for post season games there would be a lot of breakdowns those games plus I'm sure more people in the right season games it's good question I'm gonna have to ask the higher ups and get back to you but you know they've already if you guys have noticed that we've already been extending them a little bit throughout the playoffs but yeah so they might re-guess what a way to clinch it was the the ideal way to quit just we've done this by T.C. says what a way to go to the post season junior's first walkoff shot that thanks for hosting this forum for us we've been through highs and lows and that's a high and let's celebrate couldn't say about it myself a lot of lows last year and you know just a lot of lows whether you guys have are in Tampa Bay whether you guys felt the effects of the storm whether you know whatever you may be yeah there is a hundred percent is a lot to be a lot to be happy about right now so go to Max miss here I says incredible game to be at like a walkoff on from junior to clinch the playoffs the trop was electric tonight it sure was man just just what a game what a game it's all I can go back and say what a game if we go to Gary here's his heartwarming to see ballpark across America observe the 25th anniversary of now 11

baseball is a comfort quality do it as always and will be my favorite sport yeah absolutely and you know it's heart breaking and it's it's nice or I should say it's great that the MLB and all sports do the remembers the not 11 because you know we cannot forget we can't forget those names we can't forget what happened and you know we can't forget how that bonded us as country kind of going forward but yeah definitely great job by MLB and all the teams technology that we have bucks cold game in the house with with all the comments as well I see you as as we have a good funny question here do you have any any way in just fine pitching a junior there at the end no honestly with an open base I don't see why they pitch a junior and not to mention they pitch a junior he floated the ball right down the middle a junior absolutely crushed so yeah so we have a good game tomorrow that's that that's what we love to see as we go to Tim Riley what a guy Tim Riley so this race seems different can't wait to watch the playoffs yeah we're all in that same boat definitely can't wait to watch the playoffs I mean

that's Tim Riley one of the greatest people ever as we go to I love legacies I've not seen a walkoff like this since long goes home run 15 years ago yeah and look you can't ignore the similarities you know the face of the franchise basement batting third right forever that was you know batting third number three have a longoria and then you know you have the famous walkoffs on play and you know junior it's number 13 hit playing third batting third and you know it's very similar it is very similar and it can't believe I can't believe the walkoff for long go sorry 15 years ago feels feels just like yesterday but I appreciate all the people that are in the live big time crowd on this on this on this on this Friday night after the race clinch of playoff spot again please make sure I've only to like comment subscribe please make sure subscribe and turn on the post notifications because again we are alive not only in the right of the season in all the playoff games as well it's a forum that's unlike anything out there in in sports and insurance in terms of sports coverage you know a show that's hosted by fans and hosted by you know a fan a little bit of both but and that really gets to interact with the community so

make sure you guys leave a like comment and subscribe and we'll be right back tomorrow night 610 for spiss tomorrow we're about right back tomorrow hopefully talking about another race win so you guys then thank you for making locked on your first listen every day for your second listen find the all night locked on MLB game night every game every night until a world series champion is crowned get local analysis on a national scale find MLB game night on locked on MLB on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts
