The search for a new Athletic Director takes center stage, with Toledo's Bryan Blair emerging as the frontrunner—boasting a reputation for fundraising prowess and championship results across multiple sports. The hosts explore what Blair’s leadership could mean for Syracuse’s NIL and transfer portal strategy, and the urgency to get the right basketball head coach before the April 7 portal opening. The ripple effects of Adrian archery being fired by Syracuse earlier this morning on Wednesday,
March 11th.
Take news, General Manager Alex Klein, he's gone.
We'll talk about it.
The assistant coaches are gone.
We will talk about it and of course later on in the show there could be a new athletic
director on the way from Toledo and I think we're going to like him assuming fingers crossed
that this all comes to be.
So all that and more coming up here on today's edition of Lockdown Syracuse and before
we get to everything this episode is brought to you by Game Time.

Neil, you may have been the first to hear the analogy and I said this months ago that
there was a storm approaching Syracuse and we were just hoping it was going to veer
left or veer right because right now it's going right at us now the storm is gone.
The dust has settled.
You are seeing the ripple effects of Adrian archery being let go.
Thank you so much for hopping on the podcast tonight, Neil.
Let's get down to business.
Alex Klein, the General Manager, fired by Syracuse, your thoughts.
First of all, thanks for having me on Jackson friends.
Please subscribe to Jackson's fabulous pod.
It's been a fun Wednesday.
The first thing I'll say is all these guys that were let go, I wish them well, you know,
they lost their jobs.
I'm not surprised by anything.
Not surprised by anything.
Well, we all knew that it was coming with archery.
I figured with archery being let go that all the assistants would be let go because he hired
all of them, so to speak.
I think Klein was the only one that some people thought maybe would stick around because
he's the General Manager.
He's not an assistant coach per se, but he has accused alum and I know he's only been
in that role, what, for two years now and really was only involved in the roster construction
for this past season, but I'm not surprised he was let go.
They cleaned house.
They cleaned house.
And ultimately the buck stops with red archery in terms of how the team performed this
year, but I will tell you, and I know we spoke about this off-air for a second.
This roster for 25, 20, 25, 26 had one more win than the year before.
And I'm not trying to be all doom and gloom today because I think I'm excited about
the future.
And again, wish those guys well.
But if you look, and again, on paper is a lot different in recruiting rankings in high
school, don't meet Jack once you get to college.
But if you looked at this roster on paper from this past season that just ended on Tuesday
versus the 2024-25 roster, and you said to me, Neil Adler, the roster that just finished
up only one more game, I would tell you that you're freaking insane, like literally insane.
And I probably shouldn't use that word.
I'm obviously, you know, saying that and just, but just, you know, you retain JJ, you
retain Donnie, you're bringing in a six-member transfer class multiple four star guys, Nathan
George led the ACC and assist last year, Nate King shot 44% from three, two seasons
ago.
And then you have a five-member prep class with three four, three four star guys, including
top 30 guys to Deek and Kayan, and then Luke Fennel.
Yeah, so to get back to it, I'm not blaming Alex Klein for the way the roster turned out
in terms of their record this season that again is on Red Autry, but they won one more
game.
So I'm just not surprised that he's gone.
I'll leave it at that.
I think nobody is surprised that the assistant coaches were like, go, this is what happens
when you, when you fire a head coach at any level and any sport, you can, let's use the
NFL, for example, you fire the head coach, you're firing everyone else on that staff as
well.
St goes with Syracuse basketball, they fired Adrian Autry, you know that everyone else
on that staff is being like, go, we wish them nothing but the best.
With Alex Klein, he was the one question mark, but if you were really paying attention,
you could see this coming a mile away.
And it's not because it's fair to Alex Klein.
Alex Klein has really only had one chance as the GM of Syracuse, if you recall, he was
hired in the summer ahead of the 2024-25 season.
So as far as I'm concerned, the 2024-25 season does not count for Alex Klein.
That is a free pass.
We're going to pretend like that never happened.
Go to our bat, even if they were really good that year, I would say Alex Klein doesn't
get any credit for being good.
He was hired when the roster was already constructed.
He's had really one year to make the Syracuse roster.
So logic would tell you, he deserves more time.
And maybe he does deserve more time, but here's the reality.
Syracuse is going to have a new head coach and a new coaching staff.
They want their own guy.
They want their own GM.
And you can't go up to Josh Schurz at St. Louis and say, hey, we'll take you as the next
high coach.
We'll pay you a lot.
We'll give you more resources.
But you must keep the general manager in place.
That won't fly.
You can't do it.
So, look, I feel for Alex Klein.
Sure.
But at the end of the day, this is business.
It is.
It is.
100% agree.
Yeah, I feel for all of them, you know, because you never want anyone in life to lose
their jobs.
So to speak.
But him, I feel the most for him.
Because like you said, he just had one season and, you know, he helped, he was instrumental
in putting the roster together.
And again, on paper, they did well in the transfer portal.
And he was very, and I wrote about this on inside the loudhouse today.
And I've written about it in the past.
And I'm sure you've talked about it.
You know, he was pretty active on the high school recruiting scene for Syracuse more recently
too.
High school recruiting is kind of non-existent in recent months.
But like, you know, dating back, you know, further back, like with a guy like Doron Rippy
Jr.
when they were trying to, you know, went out for him.
I mean, Klein was one of the guys that was at his showcase events or, you know, other
live periods.
So like, he was involved in the high school recruiting stuff as well.
But yeah, no head coach, look, the next head coach, whether it's shirts or Hodgson or
GMAC or whoever it's going to be, they're going to bring in their own assistant coaching
staff.
They're going to bring in their own GM.
I assume they're going to bring in their own strength and conditioning people.
I don't know that for sure.
And obviously, that's a little more ancillary to our conversation.
But yeah, I mean, there was no, there was, I was not surprised when I saw the news about,
about, you know, Klein, the parting ways with Klein.
I think this is ultimately good for Syracuse too.
Yeah.
But signals is that this is a new era of Syracuse, it's a new mentality for Syracuse.
I think the old Syracuse, the one that's really concerned about public perception instead
of results, prioritizing the people that they are working with instead of what is best
for the university, they might have kept Alex Klein.
But you know what they're saying now?
We can't keep Alex Klein.
We know we can't.
We know it's not fair.
We know that some people may say you really only gave them one shot at this, but they
know what is in the best interest of the university.
And I hope that going forward, not to say that they should fire everyone after one year,
but that mentality going forward of you have to do what is best for the university and
treat this like a business because at the end of the day, it is a business.
And if you start to make it too personal and start to worry too much about public perception
and how people will look at you, you see what happens.
The results are going to suffer.
So at the end of the day, while I feel for Alex Klein again, I think this is the right
move by Syracuse.
Any last thoughts on it?
Well, the only thing I'll say is just, and you talk about this all the time and it's
just a, it's a kind of high, you know, big looming topic is if we're talking about
a general manager, I mean, we're talking about transfer portal recruiting, we're talking
about NIL, we're talking about, you know, player development and other things, but we're
just at a point in college sports where, you know, schools are paying their athletes directly
in revenue share, and then there's third party NIL.
And again, a new, the next Syracuse basketball men's, you know, basketball head coach is
going to want to bring in, assuming it's a guy, his own assistant coaching staff and
his own GM, especially since the GM position is so important in this new landscape.
So again, I feel for Alex and yes, timing wasn't great for him, you only got, you know,
like you said, he got two years, but really one year and it's just, that's the way the
cookie crumbles and he's like, he was a really good scout in the pros.
He'll land on his feet, but it's just too, I agree with you.
I think, you know, we'll see who they hires their next head coach, but I think Syracuse
is sending a message that we know this is a critical time, you know, they have the new
chance or we're going to talk about the AD and then we'll talk about the, you know, basketball
head coach, but this is an important time.
They can't mess this up.
So, you know, Alex Klein was kind of a victim of that, so to speak, but he'll land on his
feet.
He'll land on his feet.
I'm a hundred percent away, I feel they know they can't mess it up.
They know they can't f around, they can't, they can't be lazy or whatever or take the
safer.
They got to, they got to, they got to make this happen.
It's been five years since Syracuse basketball has made the answer, but they're not ridiculous.
It's going to be a year one expectation for that new coach.
Absolutely.
You can't.
Absolutely.
You can't do what you did last time and expect a different result, like that's the definition
of insanity.
Folks, time and your thoughts in the comments section below, what do you think of Syracuse?
Letting go of Alex Klein and all the assistant head coaches as well as we discussed the ripple
effects of Adrian Audrey being fired by Syracuse early on Wednesday morning, March 11th.
Now coming up here on Locked on Syracuse, a new AD could be in play.
We'll talk about it next on Locked on Syracuse.
I'm Clea Butler, host of Locked on Women's Basketball, and this is Mazda's Women's Basketball
snapshot celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture.
Texas won its first ever SEC championship on Sunday beating South Carolina 78 to 61 and
snapping the game costs three year run as SEC tournament champions.
In the big 10 championship, UCLA dominated Iowa 96 to 45.
The 51 point margin is the most lopsided title game in big 10 tournament history.
With a resume that includes 18 quad one wins and one of the toughest schedules in the
country, UCLA is making a serious push for the overall number one seed.
But Yukon has held that spot all season and remains the nation's only unbeaten team.
These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on.
The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time.
Mazda puts that same drive into every detail, wins to find the moment, putting in the work,
that defines you.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.
The biggest stretch of the college basketball season is almost here, buzzer beaters, bracket
busters, and those unforgettable moments that everyone's talking about the next day.
Being there live for something like that, that's bucket list stuff.

I'm Jackson Holzer.
This is locked on Syracuse that's Neo Adler from Inside the Loud House.
Earlier this afternoon, Wednesday, March 11th, we got a report from multiple outlets that
it appears we know who the focus is on for Syracuse's next athletic director.
Now before we inform the audience of who it is, we all need to say, hallelujah, because
this person is not Heather Lack.
Sorry, shouldn't laugh.
No, you absolutely should laugh.
This is the time to laugh.
This is the time to celebrate.
It is not Heather Lack.
She was now my first choice.
I'll just put it that way.
You wasn't my first choice.
My second.
I'm going down from Baldwin'sville over Heather Lack to be the new athletic director.
Rather that.
But anyway, the new A.D. barring something unforeseen because it's not official yet, but it
appears that it will be Brian Blair from Toledo, a little bit about Brian Blair, ladies and
gentlemen, and then Neil, I'll get it to you.
He was hired by Toledo in May of 2022.
Here's his football record, 36 and 18.
That is a 67% win percentage.
Men's basketball, 82 and 49, a 63% win percentage.
They didn't make the NCAA tournament, but they were a pretty good basketball team in
their respective conference.
Neil, what do you think about this potential athletic director?
Yeah, I mean, he certainly has some quality experience.
He doesn't have Syracuse ties, which frankly, I'm actually cool with.
Not that I would have been, if they hired someone that had Syracuse ties, it was somewhere
else, but went there, I would have been fine with that.
But he's up and coming, looking on his bio, he was the youngest athletic director at the
time I was higher a couple of years ago.
He's had other posts at schools like Washington State, Rice, South Carolina.
He played football at Wofford.
So just reading this, this was pretty insane.
Again, I keep using that word insane, but pretty impressive.
In one academic year, so Toledo's in the Mid-American Conference of Mac, they won 13 championships.
More than the previous decade combined, became the first FES school in history to win outright
conference titles in football, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country,
women's tennis, and men's tennis in the same academic year.
And then they talk more about his fundraising prowess and since 2022, their new gifts, their
gifts or whatever have increased by their donations have increased by 282% or something like that.
So look, I know Toledo isn't Syracuse, although a couple of Toledo assistants aren't they?
Is that like a weird coincidence?
I don't know, like, look, Vince Carris has been like, they're four-naderous people now.
Yeah, their football program has been great in recent years at a tremendous defense.
But in terms of Blair, he's got a track record.
Obviously, it's an athletic director from a mid-major moving up.
It's not like it's a high, but I don't care about that.
He's got the experience in my opinion.
I mean, what did John Wildhack, I mean, no disrespect to him, but like he came as the A.D.
and he was a television executive, right?
And Bill Simmons hated him too.
Good old Bill Simmons.
Gotta love Bill, love him or hate him.
But at least Blair is the athletic director somewhere right now.
So I'm cool with it.
What do you think?
It's not having a like, so that's number one.
It's not her.
So that's automatically a plus.
I'll pull up its weight here from Pete Dammell for me as PN.
He wrote, Blair brings a reputation as a fundraiser, a strong football background
and comes from an athletic department that won 13 Mac championships in his tenure.
Toledo was the first Mac school with a collective.
It has a full-time executive for NIL strategy.
Right.
So all that sounds great.
Right.
Here's how I actually view it.
At the end of the day, we have no idea if this has been
going to end up working out.
But I don't know if Syracuse could have done any better.
If this ultimately turns out to come to fruition here, Brian Blair has legitimate athletic director
experience.
You were reading about some of the other athletic director candidates.
One of them was Nick Carparelli.
And I liked him.
I think he's done some really good things.
But one thing that is missing from his resume is athletic director experience.
We talk about this with finding the new head coach of Syracuse basketball.
We want someone who is prior head coach experience.
We don't want someone to learn how to be a head coach.
We want someone who can come in and be the guy, be the man, know exactly what to do.
When you look at a guy like Brian Blair, yeah, he's going to have to adjust to the ACC.
He's going to have to adjust to being the athletic director at Syracuse, but he doesn't
have to adjust to being an athletic director.
So overall, if they can make this happen, I just see nothing but positive right now.
Yeah.
And I mean, doesn't this happen all the time when we're talking about athletic structures
or football coaches?
I mean, sometimes it's a high major, a high major, like lateral moves, so to speak.
But plenty of times the new hire is someone that has had success at a mid major and is
coming, you know, now to Syracuse in the ACC and like you said, we don't know if it's
going to work out, but, and I don't know every single person that they interviewed.
I've definitely heard from some people that they interviewed a lot more people that, you
know, were, you know, more so than were public he mentioned by various reports.
He sounds, he sounds like he's, he's totally competent.
Let's, let's roll.
Let's get it done.
That's the other thing that I want to hit on is that I don't remember reading about
him at all.
But no, no, no, no, no, no, it proves that the university is doing more than what is
being reported publicly, 100%, which how does that impact everything else that they're
doing, specifically with the men's basketball team?
Sure.
We, we have no idea.
We know the guys that are being reported out there, it's all circulating.
It's Josh Shirts and Brian Hodson and Jerry McNamara and Luke Murray and some of the other
guys and my Hopkins, please do not hire my Hopkins, what, what, all fiber might know.
But I mean, those are some of the names that are circulating.
Right.
It leads me to think that there are also names that are out there that are just not being
publicly reported and we have no idea who Syracuse is truly contacted and who Syracuse
is truly going after.
We just have an idea of who they are going after.
Absolutely.
And those reports also and a lot of them are my national reporters that are way more
plugged in than me.
So I'm not going to sit here and be on my high horse, but like, we don't know the interest
level of some of those names floated out.
I mean, you would assume that a guy like Hop or GMAT would have serious interest and
I, my assumption is, is Hodson would, I don't know about Josh Shirts.
I mean, he's a hot commodity, this, he'll be hot commodity, this, this off season and
the head coaching carousel, but I don't know what his interest level is in Syracuse.
And the other thing is is, you know, they're going to, again, we assume that they're going
to announce Brian Blair soon, but it, you know, is he hiring the next men's basketball
coach?
Is it, is it, I assume that Blair would and I assume all that would be consulted and the
new chancellor and Carmelo Anthony and a committee, there might be a search committee or whatever
you want to call it, but, you know, they need to have it in place before the portal opens
on April 7th, but, you know, it's March 11th.
So, you know, names, it's kind of like when we, the portal opens and you get all these
reports and you talk about it on your pod and I write about it and it's like, oh Syracuse
is reached out to so and so, Syracuse is showing interest and you know, you don't know, or
I'm not saying you, but we don't know like a lot of the ins and the outs of interest level
on one side or the other or mutual interest.
So they need to move expediently and Wildhack said today that they're going to move quickly
and finding the next head coach, but they have a little bit of time.
And the other thing is, as you know, Jackson, you know, if they're looking at guys that
are in the NCAA tournament, I mean, they're going to have to do this delicately.
Yeah, I mean, they can't, you know, they can't, I don't think they're going to announce,
like, let's see, they got a guy like Josh, sure, they can't announce him while he's playing
in the NCAA. I mean, you know what I'm saying?
I mean, that's a no.
Yes, a no.
I'll give you the example on that.
Sorry to cut you off here.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, NC State last year with Will Wade.
Right, right.
They, they, it was the best, it was the worst type of seeker in the world that everyone
knew he was going to NC State.
While he was coaching in the NCAA tournament for McNeese State.
In fact, he had actually informed his team already and he was transparent with everyone
that he was going to NC State.
I actually respect that more.
Yeah, I totally, that's the right way to go about it.
You know that you're leaving just announced like Kevin Willard.
Yeah, you don't want to do that, but you know, Kevin Willard's in the NCAA tournament
with Villanova, so, you know, who got the last laugh, but anyway, like, that's the right
way to do it.
Totally.
It's not like you have to really truly weight them out, you know, if Brian
Hodson is going to make a run here or Josh Scherz is going to make a run or Jerry McNamara
is going to take Sienna or whatever to the sweet 16.
Who knows?
I mean, it's March Madness.
You never have any idea what's really going to happen.
Yeah.
You don't have to be like, well, they have to be eliminated.
And once they're eliminated, we can official, we can look at Earth you there.
It's more like we know who we're going to hire.
Once they are eliminated, we can have the press conference saying we hire them.
But it's already been.
Well, we're having a conversation.
Oh, of course.
And they're talking to the agent.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I totally agree with you there.
It's just, you know, the timeings kind of, but I mean, they do technically have almost
a month until the poor open.
So I'm not saying they want to dawdle with this, but they do have a little bit of time.
And look, I was encouraged, I'm not, I wasn't happy that Red God fired and needed to happen.
But I was encouraged that they just got it over with today.
And if again, by, you know, tomorrow or then this week or early next, whatever it's going
to be, they announced the new AD, they're like, they're moving these steps along nicely
in my opinion.
And then, you know, we'll go from there with the men's basketball coach.
But it's, it's a, it's an interesting time with SU athletics, as for sure.
Interesting time.
And for the first time in a while, I can say I think it's a positive time.
Encouraging?
It's encouraging.
It's, it's hopeful.
It's a breath of fresh air.
Yeah, I think hopeful is a good word.
You know, I think I've said this on your pod or wherever, but, you know, it Brian Hachens
the next guy or GMAC or who are like, we don't know if they're going to succeed or not.
But there's, there's like, there's like more hope.
But like, I had some hope for red this year, but then the season went sideways.
And then it's like, I never rooted for them to lose, but I wasn't like super sad when
they lost on Tuesday.
I was like, all right, this is just done.
Let's just go.
Let's move.
I, I, I, you know what I'm saying?
Like, you know, I have a confession to make.
Oh, really?
What is it?
Did you root for them to lose?
Either win the whole thing and prove me wrong or just get it on.
Right.
Okay.
I just couldn't deal with it anymore.
Well, I went like everything else.
They, you know, they hung around in the first half and then got blown out.
I mean, once they're getting blown out, I'm like, you don't, you're not pulling off
a miracle comeback.
Let's just, let's just get on with it.
So, I mean, I think to say, like, I was rooting for them to lose, I wanted them to either
lose as soon as possible or win the whole time.
Yeah.
No, there was no in-between.
Right.
Well, we don't need them.
You're okay.
It doesn't, it doesn't do anything for them in terms of getting into March Madness and
just kind of like delays the inevitable, so to speak.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's where I was at.
But, you know, if they had run the table, good for them, they didn't.
So now we're talking about the ripple effects of Adrian Entry being fired.
That's Neo Adler from Inside the Loudhouse.
I'm Jackson.

One more ripple effect we have to briefly talk about here on locked on Syracuse.
What is going to happen to this roster?
So Neil, the floor is yours.
You envision anyone aside from Calvin Russell, returning to next year's team.
Well, first of all, you know, I wrote about Calvin a lot, you know, in terms of, you
know, being a football sign E, but also playing basketball.
And I wasn't, I was always a little, maybe not skeptical, but I didn't necessarily think
he'd be playing like on the basketball team all four years anyway.
So, but we'll leave that to the side.
I think that well, first of all, obviously, Starling, William Kyle and, and, and Bryce are,
gone, in terms of eligibility, out of eligibility.
Nate Kings might have more eligibility because he's only played two seasons at the D1 level.
But in terms of guys that I think are gone, I think most, if not all of them will be gone.
I think Donnie will be gone.
I think Nate George will be gone.
Actually, I could just flip around the other way.
The only guys that I could envision staying are potentially Cyan Anthony, Sadeek White,
Nate Kings, maybe Tyler Betsy.
That's it.
I don't see anyone else staying.
I think Tyler Betsy is definitely gone because I don't think the new coach is going to
want him because he's a shooter and not much else.
Shooter and not much else.
And you can find other players who can shoot and do other things.
I, I know if I were a coach, I would not want Tyler Betsy on my team next year.
But, okay.
So, yeah, I mean, I only think that anyone who's significant that could return is Cyan Anthony.
Because of the legacy factor, I think if his name was Cyan Smith, he would not return.
Oh, he's basketball.
Yeah.
And I think the only other guy that could possibly return that was in the rotation is Nate
Kings.
And that's because he spoke very glowingly of Syracuse and said if you can get that
waiver, he will be open to staying.
Right.
I don't know if the new coach would want him.
I mean, look, at the end of the day, it was pretty good.
He was pretty good.
He was pretty good.
He was pretty good.
Like the new coach is going to want their own GM is going to want their own higher.
100%.
100%.
Well, he was pretty good the second half of the season.
He was pretty good.
I would, I would take him back in a heartbeat.
Right.
I really would.
But, you know, if he moves on, there's, there's no ill will.
I think with guys like Donnie Freeman and Nate George, it is a done deal that they are
gone and quite honestly being blunt.
I won't miss him one bit.
No, I'm fine with that too.
I'm good.
The only reason I said to Deek is because I know him and Coyen are pretty tight.
I mean, again, it has to do with going portal and no, I mean, you could be right.
I just, I know they're pretty tight.
They both have, I think, to Deek has, you know, promising future.
I mean, obviously part of it also depends on like who the new coaching, the new head coach
and staff are.
And if there's any former connections there, blah, blah, blah.
So yeah, I mean, I.
If I had to say three, the three that are the most likely to stay and I'm not saying most
like, you know, that's loosely defined.
I would say Coyen, Cedique and Nate Kings.
But everyone out me, yeah, I mean, I'm kind of like whatever on Betsy, but like the rest,
they're all gone.
Yeah.
Is there any of them that you're actually going to miss?
Well, I mean, I will, even though people roast me for saying this, I always wish players
well.
You know, we always wish them well.
Yeah.
Wow.
I'm really kind of not nice about that, but miss.
It's tough with Donnie, like I wrote about him for years.
He's from DC where I'm from, like, I don't think he's a bust, but like he came in as the
highest ranked group commit for them since mellow.
And I know he was honorable, mentioned all ACC, but he just, I don't like his body language.
I think he quit on the team some, I mean, I know it was a frustrating season.
And he's not the only one that didn't give 100, 10% all the time.
But no, not really.
I miss William Call of the third.
Yeah.
I miss him.
And that's why I like to deek.
I know he's wrong offense, but he's a, he's got high energy.
He's got a motor.
He obviously needs to add strength and he's a freshman, but like I think he could be a good
defensive player.
But no, not really, dude, no.
I mean, I wish him all well, but yeah, no, right.
I think that's one of the other themes of this Syracuse basketball team is that it was
not a likable team.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Because of the fact that they had expectations and that you knew there was talent and they
implore you clearly, you can clearly see they weren't playing up to it.
It's just, you like the guys that seem to perform to expectations or you wouldn't have
to speak in William Kyle for sure.
Yeah.
And they came.
And they came.
Yeah.
For like everyone else, cruddy, crappy body language and yeah, not diving for loose balls
and just like throwing the towel.
It's like, I know the season was a huge disappointment, but like y'all are getting paid.
Like, oh yeah.
You know what I'm saying?
Any last thoughts before we wrap up here?
No, it's just like, like you said, I'm excited.
I'm hopeful for the future.
We don't know what's going to happen.
There's going to be a lot to talk about.
