Every team, every topic, everywhere, this is believed.
Oh, la, y bienvenidos a la Duce's Wild Daily Hostel.
Special Saturday edition, soy Enrique Byron,
President of the S.L. May Horser Vesa,
Car Shield, S.L. May Horser Car Protection Program.
Miguelito San Diego, we don't not with us today.
We'll do through Clark, not with us today either,
but as you guys know, each and every single morning
we come on here.
We like to properly salute our boys,
our title sponsor Car Shield,
and each and every one of you.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Whoo.
Remember this folks, when we are useful,
we are useful, and when we are useless,
we are fucking useless, a very pleasant,
good morning to you on the 28th day of March 20,
26, 10, 50 AM Pacific time.
All right, the Daily Hostel quoted today,
she who knows when he can fight
and when he cannot, will be victorious.
I love that, and it actually helps me segue right now
into the baseball games from yesterday,
because it was Aaron Judge came up
in a big spot runner-on base,
and he had a call that he felt
was down, and he challenged to call immediately,
they overturn it.
Later in the F-AT, he hits a two-run homer
that basically wins the game for the New York Yankees.
After the game, Judge said,
hey, look, I'm not going to challenge
every close call throughout the year,
but if I have a chance to flip a count upon his head,
and it's in a big spot,
and it's later in the game,
I'm going to take advantage of that.
Well, he did yesterday,
and for the Yankees, it ended up helping them win the ballgame.
On the other side of things,
in San Francisco, Tony Vatelo,
and his crew off to a very slow start,
offensively, they've been shut out.
Two games in a row, just one hit yesterday.
It's rough right now.
If you want to look deeper inside the numbers,
be like, well, okay, are they having good at bats?
Are they making hard contact?
And on opening night, I thought they did.
I thought they squared some balls up,
that ended up getting caught.
Matt Chapman, I alluded this,
yesterday he had 107 mile per hour,
shot up the middle.
There were other balls that were hit hard
and did not fall.
Well, yesterday, a little bit of a different story.
I like to look at two stats
that tell me not only about a player,
but the stats tell me about a team.
And what sort of effort they put forth
and how productive they were at the dish,
and was it just luck that they didn't score many runs?
Or was it luck that they scored a bunch of runs?
Or was there a process within this
that actually helped them achieve their goal
or not achieve what they were getting for?
So yesterday, the Giants offense,
zero walks, 13 fucking strikeouts,
holy shit, man, that is not good.
The one thing that I would demand from my offense,
no matter what level I'm coaching,
we're talking from little league to the big leagues,
are competitive at bats.
And every now and again,
you're going to run across a dude
that is just that dominant on that day.
Cam Schiller, fine, good pitcher.
But my goodness, we need a better effort.
Tony Vitella wrote it off to guys trying to do too much,
made a golf reference in that.
He tried to, too hard and golf,
and sometimes it doesn't work.
I'm with them.
I understand that oftentimes that can be the case.
But you're coming off a pretty good spring training.
Swann the bats pretty well.
Obviously, they're pressing in this time.
And these aren't guys that they're familiar with.
Somewhat understandable, right?
Not a ton of action against Max Fried,
who was the first day starter for the New York Yankees,
and then Shitler yesterday.
They're relieving core.
Again, a lot of these giant knitters,
not super familiar.
But let's just fucking stop there.
Because at this point,
I don't think it's worth making excuses for them.
You've got to be better.
This lineup is better than that.
Rafael Devers.
Look, he's a perennial all-star.
This is one of the better bats in the game of baseball.
So for him to, let's see, punch out three times.
No bueno.
William Domb has got off to a slow start last year, too.
He goes over three with three punch outs.
It's just one of those things where everyone
in the lineup punched out at least one time
with the exception of who.
He's the rise.
I mean, and he goes over four.
So.
Is it time to panic after two games?
If you're the giant snow, no, not at all.
But if I am in that coaches room,
and I'm talking to the boys,
the hitters specifically,
I'm just going to tell them, look, dudes,
you got to be fucking better.
Same sort of thing when they were on defense
in that first game.
It's just sloppy.
It's unacceptable.
Zero walks, 13 punch outs.
Sloppy, unacceptable.
So hopefully they can write the ship today
as they get ready to go here.
Let's see.
It's a 415 p.m. Pacific daylight time.
Kind of a weird time.
I'd say it most likely to be shadows
that might even be too early for shadows.
Okay.
So yesterday, I told you guys,
I was going down to a watch party
in Sacramento opening day for the A's up in Toronto.
And it was the Blue Jays prevailing in this one.
The A's, two runs on three hits.
And all three hits came courtesy of one dude.
Shay Lengaleers, two home runs.
He looked dialed in all day.
He was going so compact, short,
yet powerful, really impressive performance by him.
Really impressive performance as well by Kevin Gossman.
16-inch pitch, one hit, one run.
The only blemish was the home run that he gave up
to Lengaleers.
Ready for this?
Zero.
Zero.
Fucking walks, 11 strike outs.
He was throwing 98 miles per hour.
He had a devastating split to go with it.
On the flip side, you had the A's,
you had Luis Severino on the mound,
and he was good.
Really good.
Five in his pitch, three hits, two runs,
three walks, three strike outs.
But there was a play that should have been made there
by Denzel Clark or potentially Tyler Sodistrum
where Blind Drive, left center field gap.
You had Denzel Clark taking the underneath angle.
Sodistrum was behind him.
For whatever reason, Clark pulled up.
The ball went into the gap, two runs stored,
and it potentially cost the A's the game.
I really enjoyed my time during this watch party,
because basically what it was,
is when a play would happen,
we would stop down,
and then I would commentate on the play,
my guys Strawberry, who actually went to St. Francis,
class of 1993, one year above me.
He was running the mic,
and whenever something would come up
or a fan had a question,
and they would ask,
I would respond,
and give him my insight to what was happening,
and on that play specifically right there,
in my opinion, Denzel Clark needs to make that fucking play.
You're the better outfielder,
you're the better athlete,
you have to track on it, just go.
Now he may have heard something,
that caused him to pull up.
What I loved was that later in the game,
they had a very similar ball,
and this time, Denzel Clark ran right through it,
caught it, and that was it.
Andres Tematis,
he had that two run double on the ball,
that I was just talking about,
that Clark missed,
and then he comes up big,
with the game winning hit,
after Languilier's tied it,
in the ninth inning.
What a really cool moment.
For Toronto,
I thought it was a really cool moment.
Languilier's hitting the homer,
for all the fans in Sacramento.
One of the things that they asked was,
why was Nick Kurtz hitting lead off?
And we could debate this over and over and over and over again.
The answer is very simple.
Nick Kurtz is their best hitter,
and they want to get him more at bats
than anybody else.
End of story.
So, at the end of the day,
Nick Kurtz will have more played appearances,
so long as he stays in that lead-off slot,
than any other Oakland athletics hitter.
And it makes sense.
Not to mention the fact that,
you got a guy like Languilier's hitting behind him.
I don't hate it.
I would probably construct a lineup
a little different.
Jack Wilson.
Excuse me.
Jacob Wilson has such good bat to ball skills,
where I'd probably put him at lead-off grinding out at bats.
And then go to Languilier's at two,
Kurtz at three, and so on.
But they have a dynamic offense.
I don't think yesterday's much of an indication
of what we're going to see from the A's going forward.
Just for the fact that Gossman was absolutely nasty.
Okay.
Take it a look at some of the other scores.
Marlins 2-1 over the Rockies in South Florida.
The Braves looked really good.
Chris Sale looked really good.
Walt Wise.
Congratulations to him for his first managerial victory.
The Angels win again.
And holy shit, man.
My trout is on fire.
Trout yesterday.
He was three for four.
Another home run.
Now hitting him.
What is it?
667.
On the year.
Just look style.
Looks like the old might trout ripped a couple of bags
in that first game.
So the Angels in manager Kurtz Suzuki might be a little bit better
than we thought.
Or maybe not.
Remember, it is super early.
We shall see.
Okay.
I talked about.
The Giants.
Zero walks in 13 strikeouts.
In the game that they got shut out yesterday.
I then.
Looked at the Tigers who seemingly grinded out a five two victory
in San Diego.
And I went to their walk to strikeout ratio.
Eight walks, nine strikeouts.
Very impressive.
And when you talk about the Detroit Tigers these days.
You got to bring up.
My new favorite player.
Kevin Patrick.
Magonical.
The kid from Pennsylvania.
Who yesterday.
He stepped up a ball.
403 feet.
Was looking at rounding the bases for his first big league homer.
And then it was Jackson.
Me.
Okay.
Miguel.
Flying through the air.
Pulling it back.
Sick.
Catch.
Right at the 396 sign.
Well up and well.
Reached over.
Later in the game, though.
It was Wanda Perolta.
The left hander for the San Diego Padres, going up against.
a 10-pitch at bat before squaring them up to the right center field gap, the tigers take the lead,
the tigers win. This kid is fucking special. Once again, sort of the theme of the show,
I brought up the strike out to walk out. Race show yesterday. This kid was unbelievable in the
minor leagues way more walks than strikeouts, and then you see him doing what he's done so far
in the first couple days in the big leagues. It is so refreshing to watch. The cops, a lot of
Chase Soutley mentioned that yesterday. I played with Chase Soutley at UCLA. Chase Soutley is a
fucking dude, man. One of the baddest motherfuckers I've ever seen play the game of baseball.
Then you look at him, though, and the cop that I gave yesterday was Lenny Dijkstra without the
blow. He is electric the way he moves, short of the way he's built, all of it. So we'll see
how this kid does going forward, but he's going to be great. Not just good, he's going to be great,
and it really kind of has to do with his hand-eye coordination, his ability to take the barrel
to bat and put it on the baseball. Look out for the tigers. This is going to be a team that right
now, if I had to pick a team from the American League going to the World Series, that's it.
That's it. Your scubals last year of his contract. It is go time. It is right fucking now. They have
the pieces. They have the lineup. They have the starting pitching. I believe they have the bullpen,
but this is a lineup that keeps coming at you. They're grinders. They're fighters. They're led by
AJ Hinch who has been there and done that before. The Detroit Tigers in my humble opinion of the
best team in the American League. Last night it was the Mariners, evening up the series with the
Cleveland Guardians Indians, five, one, that it was chased a lotter, who wants again for the
Cleveland Indians, ends up hitting a home run. He has three now, the kid from West Virginia.
He's got a really interesting story. I'm going to dive in even more, but Jane Levy who
wrote a terrific book. I forget the name of it somewhere around here. I think it was like
Make Me Commissioner. She did a whole thing on Chase the Lotter and I'm really interested.
It had to do a travel ball on kind of some other stuff, but I'm going to dive into his story.
I'll share that with you guys here shortly, but it's definitely a good one. Remember, he was
called up in the playoffs last year for the first time when Cleveland was dealing with injuries
against thrown right into the fire. And then in Chavez ravine last night, it was the Dodgers
addition. So just when you think the rich can't get any richer, well, they add Kyle Tucker and
they add Edwin DS. And second game of the fucking year, they come through to help them win the game.
It's incredible. Give the Dodgers front office a ton of credit. Give Dave Roberts a ton of credit.
Give Bob Garen a ton of credit putting these guys in position to succeed. But Kyle Tucker comes
up game on the line, boom, base hit. They take the lead. Five, four, hand the ball off to Edwin Diaz,
who comes out to probably the most electric
closer walkouts. I've ever fucking seen it. I've been there for Mario Rivera,
Inter Sandman. I was there for Trevor Hoffman, Hell's Bells. I don't think I've ever seen
anything like last night, a sold out Dodgers stadium on a night when they got their championship
rings. And here comes Edwin Diaz with a live trumpet player playing. It was so fucking cool.
And what does he do? Goes out there. Boom. No problem. Shots the door Dodgers win.
This is the best team in baseball. Two-time champs. To be the champs, you got to beat the champs.
So we'll see how this season unfolds. But if Kyle Tucker is coming up big in those moments,
Edwin Diaz is featuring the shitty with featuring last night. And they keep playing the trumpet.
As he walks out, it's a fucking event. Going to a Dodgers game has always been
somewhat of an event, but even more so now between the star-studded players.
And the fact there's a two-time champs back-to-back going for the three-peat. And you add in
the whole fucking trumpet thing. Oh, good time to be a Dodger fan. It really is.
All right, so today, let's see folks, we got baseball firing everywhere.
I believe it's going to be a full slate, so it should be 15 games. Raised at the Cardinals,
Nationals at the Cubs, you got the A's at the Blue Jays again, twins at the Orioles,
Rangers at the Phillies, Red Sox at the Reds, Pirates at the Mads, Rockies at the Marlins,
Angels at the Astros, White Sox at the Brewers, Royals at the Braves, Yankees at the Giants,
Tigers at the Padres, Debacks at the Dodgers, and Rounding Off the Night. They like playing
late in Seattle, Guardian at the Marlins. They're always the last game of the day.
Okay, everyone have a fantastic day. I'm off to some ski racing, off to some pickleball.
And I don't know. I mean, we're some kind of daily hustle, deuces, wild streak right now.
I just look, I didn't have to do the show today. I wanted to do the show today.
Came on here. I just love talking baseball, love breaking it down with you guys. So
everyone have a fantastic day once again. And maybe I'll have another one tomorrow.
If not, I'll see you guys on Monday. That's it. Oh, yeah. And don't forget,
hit the QR code for the car show. The number one car protection agency in the business.
If you liked the show, please take a moment to rate, review, and subscribe. It really does
help the show to grow. Thank you for listening.
