Rich, where are you? Where are you right now? That doesn't look like a boat. I'm not telling you. Max, you can't keep up with me where I'm at. You got chopper off the boat and then dropped in an undisclosed location? Well, I did have a nice dinner tonight. Very nice dinner. Uh-huh. Nice glass of wine. It's just a nice day. Who was it today? I was by myself. Okay. Yeah, it was beautiful. It's about. Listen to some Miles Davis. Yes, about 90 degrees outside at night, about 80. Uh-uh. Very nice. Very nice dinner. Very light. So where is it? All the internet detectives out there. You need to figure out where is it 80 degrees outside. Somewhere in the middle of the night. It's great. It was great. So. I noticed you're always like going off somewhere and it's like you're not going to be back for a couple of weeks.

You never seem to make it the whole time. You always seem to like get back to the action before like that. It seems like you've been speaking to Dean. Dean always says that. I have. Yes. But. But it's an observation that I made too. It's not just like Dean whispered that in my ear. Well, I'm still working. I can be off to grit for about five days is long enough. This is what I'm saying. Yes. This is what I've noticed. But it was never two weeks. I say no, two weeks. Two weeks. Too much. Never two weeks. Never two weeks. Right. But I'm still working. I'm working. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I literally. I worked all day today. Do you have the clutch jet old gased up and ready to go to fly back forever? I guess they've got the gased up. Maybe does it come out like that, like like the X-Men, that they got that jet that plane that comes in from underground and it rises up over the clutch offices. The thing just comes apart and the jet rises up and.

No, you have to drive to it. You have to drive to the jet. Yeah, it's none of those theatrics, get the drive to it. Listen, my guess is right now, you're closer to. the first game of the NFL season physically than I am. That's my guess. That is true. Yeah. That's true. Yeah. You're somewhere far away. Game over with Max, Kellerman and Rich Paul. Yes, game over spotify.com. Leave us a voicemail for 248341, 248341. And we will get Rich. Let's discipline ourselves a voicemail and an email today. Okay. I want to be that last show. Yeah. We do want to be. All right. But this time, don't do the thing where you don't read the voicemail in the, okay, I'll do it. Rich, obviously you brought it up just now. Pats and Seahawks. This is a big moment for Drake May. When this last time, we got a super bowl rematch in week one of the following season. And, and, and, and in this case, Drake May gets AJ Brown who unlocked Jalen Hertz when he got to Philly. It's not like Drake May seemed to need a lot of help in the

regular season. They had a very soft schedule last year. But in the playoffs, he was in the playoffs in the Super Bowl. He was a deer in headlights, right? And now they brought in Romeo dobs and, and obviously AJ Brown. And he's more loaded in terms of receivers than he was last season. But rich in another way, let's say he looks great and they win. You know what guys like me are going to say. And in this case, me, and it's not become trying to be negative or, you know, I'm always trying, it's because I view this. Honestly, this is the way I view it. If he does look great, and I can't like pin it on, well, that's the AJ Brown effect. If he just looks different, then to my mind, yes, you could say he's one year more mature. Yeah, he has the extra weapons and all that stuff targets. But like you're playing the exact same defense, same team. You got it done week one, but you couldn't get it done in the Super Bowl. It's like, I don't think he can answer

that week one of the next season. You know what I mean? It was not just the defense he was facing. It was the stage. He had like, there's no way to show that you can handle that stage week one. Yeah, well, I think, well, it's two things. If they win, it doesn't say anything. But I think that NFL took a page out of the NBA's book and scheduling the last game of the year for the to be the first game of next year, which is actually pretty cool. We want to see that. Normally, the team that it's normally like ring night in the NBA, but in this case, I don't know if it's ring night, there's no ring night in it in that field. But I do think AJ Brown can add some experience. I mean, he's been to the Super Bowl twice. One wants. Will he be a difference maker in that huddle for Drake May? Yes. Would Drake May come back more experienced? I coming off of

last year's, whatever you want to call it in Super Bowl. Yes, I think so. Yeah. There's a card. So, no, I think it's, look, we all know that there's a world where the better team didn't make it to Super Bowl last year in the ASS. We know that. Whether it's deer and handlights or, you know, sometimes the game get away from you, but Seattle was just a better team and it showed. But this should be different. They got Gonzalez done, which I told you that would get done. He's the highest paid corner back in NFL now at 33.75. I think 3175 3375, whatever it was. So I think I think I think it'll be a much better game than the Super Bowl. Yeah, that's right. I also think it'll be a better game than the Super Bowl. I don't like to me, it's not so much because the Seahawks kind of got lost in the shuffle of the offseason talk. I think largely because the game with the Rams

was so close and the NFC championship game, which was really the Super Bowl. Like those were the two best teams last year. But it was a close, close game. And then the Rams get miles freaking Garrett. And then Aaron Donald comes out of retirement. But on top of that, the Rams adret, like they had two weaknesses in the Super Bowl against Seattle. It was the secondary. They get McDuffie who's like a what top, even if he's not like an A or a plus, he's not a B plus. He's minimum in a minus. He's in the A's somewhere like he's a top corner back better than the best cornerback on a lot of teams. So that's a huge way to address that issue. And they got a new special teams coach and they brought in veterans on special teams. So they addressed the two kind of weaknesses that were probably the difference in the game in the Super Bowl last year in a very tight game. And then also got Miles Garrett now and Donald. I think because of all that and the market on top of it, people are very taken with the Rams. And so Seattle has been noted by like Bill Simmons,

among others, has kind of flown under the radar. But I don't know if it's so much Seattle being disrespected. I take it more as people thinking the jury is still out on Sam Darnold. You know, there, it once you become a journeyman quarterback, you're you're not branded as kind of a starting quarterback or a star quarterback with a certainty more a franchise player. I think it takes people a while to come around on you. And and if Sam Darnold was perceived more in the way that elite, quote, it'll staffer or or or Josh Allen or someone like that is perceived. I don't think the Seahawks would be as kind of unspoken about in the offseason as they've been to me because they are flying a little under the radar. I also think just bigger market teams get more love in this case. I don't think you can you you may be right about Sam Darnold. He doesn't kind of bring forth that what I would say that brashness that normally, normally quarterbacks have,

especially one that won a Super Bowl. But Sam Darnold is a good quarterback. I think it's more so the talk of the the the conversation of the NFL has been the Rams. The Rams in the big market like LA, they add to Super Hero defensive guys. And like you said, McDuffy, they've won before. You know, it's just it's just a bigger, better conversation stories. That story is going to get more eyeballs than talking about the Seahawks again. Referral is a good quarterback. He is a good quarterback. I mean, obviously a good quarterback, but I wonder how good. You know, like it can he be a great quarterback. He's the third pick in the draft if they had to redo that draft. Obviously, he's going ahead of Baker Mayfield or sake one, Barkley based on what's happened so far as great as sake one's been. He's a running back and Darnold's a quarterback. Darnold has size. He can move. He can throw. He's clearly capable of winning big games. He just won the Super Bowl. You know, had he not been on 15,000 teams before he got to Seattle, if we perceived him differently,

I think we would, I think Seattle would be a bigger deal, although I agree with you about the market and as I mentioned, all the stuff that happened around LA. Baker still goes one. I mean, Baker won. Yes. No, over Sam Darnold. Yes. He still goes one. Yes. Baker Mayfield over Sam Darnold. Yes. He's still going. What does Baker Mayfield do better than Sam Darnold? Everything. No. Baker. I think Baker Mayfield's a good solid NFL quarterback. Sam Darnold is bigger, faster. Yeah, but but but if who's a better thrower of the football, and he's won. Yeah, but you're saying that that's what they call after cars, Max. When you think about it, the way players are evaluated today, the dual threat of a Baker Mayfield, the leadership of a Baker Mayfield, he has everything, the passion, everything. I'm not saying, I like Baker. Sam Darnold is a really good quarterback, but you said you think Sam Darnold goes one. I still

don't think that. I don't think that. I still think it goes Baker. Maybe Sam two in them, say, one, three, but I still think just because he's a running back, but I still think Baker goes one. Baker's my opinion. A baker. I don't see an argument where he's a top 10 quarterback. I do see one for Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold. That's what I'm saying. Like if you said that prior to Sam Darnold winning, they're super, but no, no. I would have. Sam Darnold Baker Mayfield is an interesting question heading into last year. And Baker Mayfield was in the MVP conversation. I thought incorrectly through a handful of games last year, but it by the end of the season. If you're a Baker Mayfield win a, win a Super Bowl, no, and that Seattle team. Last year, no, I don't think so. But I like Baker. I think Baker's a, like that's what I mean about Sam Darnold. If Darnold wins it or makes even a deep run again this year and plays well, if he limits the turnovers, which is always the thing with him back in, back to college,

right? Don't be a superhero. You know, manage the game a little bit more. I think Sam is a more of a prototypical quarterback. Yes, yes. By the way, in that draft, I thought Baker should have gone first at the time. You know, like I thought he was more like I believed the numbers he was putting up in college for a real and would translate to the NFL. But what you saw once he turned pro is you got to be able to outrun some linebackers and just given his size, like the speed didn't translate the same way. But the NFL, but he's a good quarterback in Tampa Bay. Was a glimpse of the quarterback you saw in Cleveland. Baker went on the road and won us a playoff game in Pittsburgh. We were very close to beating the Kansas City Chiefs too. Just to be clear. Baker's good. Baker's good. I like what I'm saying. Yeah. Yeah. But, but even in both of those guys went to organizations that as a quarterback, you just need time and you also need help from the

other positions. You need help from the offseason moves. You need help from guys coming to locker room and actually wanting to to to come in there with a winning attitude and a professionalism with their habits and all these type of things. Sam went to the jets and Baker went to the Browns. And if you see those guys sitting in their career, you know, it fits the other organizations. But they're just in better situations and it took for them both to go to Baker went to the Panthers and to the Rams and to Lance with Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay with Bulls and all the other pieces, he looks like a different guy. He also has the experience and he's also been allowed to play through mistakes, have ups and downs and still have an organization believing them. Same thing like Sam Donald. Sam Donald just had a better team last year on both sides of the ball. They had

a hell of a defense in Seattle and they were just good. They were just good. They were team without a weakness like the big, big question was would he be able to get it done? I thought the Rams would win because I figured, Darnell will be in a tight spot at some point in the Super Bowl. He will try to be a superhero. He will turn the ball over. Stafford won't the Rams will win. That defense was astounding last year. But all not just the defense special teams, everything. The defense at all three levels, the offense. Now they lose Kenneth Walker the third, but they draft a really good running back and like look, I think Seattle's as live as anyone. Yeah. And their coaches really good. Yeah, really good. And when you talk, it makes I was really good. When you talk about what teams realistically could win the Super Bowl, obviously LA, obviously the Rams and Seattle's another one of maybe a handful of teams where you go, yeah, to me, that's that's category one. That's like the that's like the a list of teams that if

they're healthy, couldn't win a Super Bowl. I still think they're in it. But okay, so let's talk about the Rams and the Niners rich because we've been talking about the Rams anyway. Aaron Donald's not going to play. Does that mean that he's, I guess he's not ready. Yeah, okay. Yeah, he can't ramp up and then go to Australia. Max, let me tell you something. I flew to Australia one time. Right now I've been up for 20 hours. I flew to Australia and I had to go to Sydney and Melbourne in all of a span of three days nonstop. Do you know when I landed in Australia, I felt like I was standing on my head and walking on my hands. That's how upside down. Yeah, because you're upside on the wrong side of the earth. You probably were. Imagine getting off the plane and playing a football game. Nuts. That's why what I don't understand is the Rams are flying into Australia the day before

the game. The Niners got the, got their like in like October. Like they got, they've been there for the Niners have been, you know, their kids go to school there now. They have accents like they live in Australia. That's the like, like, I said to crown. Once upon a time, Lennox Lewis was heavyweight champion of the world and he was easily the best heavyweight in the world. And this guy has Sim Rockmont, great guy. One of the great guys in boxing and a good heavyweight was getting a title shot against Lennox in South Africa in L of at elevation, right? So Rockmont did what the Niners did. He got there way ahead of time. Lennox because he used the man shows up, breezes in. Okay, it's Rockmont. I'll do my thing. Get snuck out. Yes. Get snuck out. Like, and much even at a neutral site, if everyone's prepared, the Niners are the kind of, did an early season when it gets the Rams last year. They're the kind of team that can upset a team like the Rams.

Like the Rams could easily be oh and one and would not be surprised wouldn't be surprised much stranger things have happened, especially if the Niners are giving themselves the better chance to win by getting there early. Do you agree that that like if you're the coach of that team, do you want them? You want your team to acclimate to Australia or you want them to do what the Rams are going? Well, the data would say it sports science would probably say it. And then just your natural instincts to where your body feels would probably say yes. Now maybe the Rams know something that we don't know. We'll see. Yeah, what's crazy also is I think of McVeigh as a great coach, as a great coach like legitimate. If he never coached another game, I think he's a hall of famed coach. He's been to. Yes. He's been to multiple. He's been to three Super Bulls. He's one one. He came or two Super Bulls. He's one one. He's you know, he came very close to getting to another one which he clearly would have won against that Patriots team. He's great. But Shanahan like Shanahan does it.

If you look at the names on the Niners roster, you go they're talented, but they're never available. Like it doesn't matter what quarterback he has a third string quarterback. His running back is hurt. His hybrid running back receiver can be hurt. This guy can be in the club. You can lose his best pass rusher. They like, there's a million different ways that Shanahan will go can go into a game and has. And yet somehow he's competitive every season. He's make, you know, he's wind up. He winds up in the playoffs like there's there's Shanahan is definitely in the conversation for best coach in the league. And this is a matchup where like the kind of pressed that the Rams have gotten the, the, you know, the editions they've made. This would be a huge win for Shanahan and the Niners down under. And I think I like the Rams, but like by a little, you know, Niners could easily win this game. Rich, um, well, should we make our picks? You want to make our picks?

Uh, I'm going with the Rams and the Seahawks. Yeah, after all that, I'm going to say the exact same thing. And not only that, but I think the Rams might win big. No, you have to take them. You can't just take the same thing. I'm so much. I can't pick the same. So I have to figure out a way why. All right. The Niners upset the Rams. Okay. Um, who you have with the Brown Jaguars? You know, that's the game that everyone's talking about. I don't know if you heard about this, but like the buzz on that game's unbelievable. Rams. I mean, uh, Brown Jaguars. Yes, but you're afraid to bet dinner. Do you want a bad dinner? I got the Browns. Uh, Browns Jags. Sure. Let's bet dinner. I'll take the Jags. Why not? Yeah, I'll take the Jags. Sure. I think the Browns might be in for like a three win season, buddy. Like I don't know what I'm just like, I don't know how many games they're going to win. No, you know what? The Browns will win more than that because at a certain point,

they're going to take the ball away from the Sean Watson and give it to Shedor. And the team's going to get a little juice from that. So they'll win a couple games once that happens because they're going to be motivated and excited. And Shedor might play well early. I could see the Browns winning five games. Maybe something like that. Something like that. But now apparently I have to root against them week one. Yeah, you're loose. Game over is brought to you by FanDool. The NFL is back. Why do you think that is? I saw that. Well, I saw something about they were taking off the S.A.P. 100. Yeah, you said that to me. Yeah. What do you think I got this? Yes, you said that to me. Yeah, because it was, I thought it was just an interesting thing, but there's still

there's the 500 just not the 100 right right. Well, you walk into a store. Do they have as much shelf space equity as before? No, there's other brands that popped up. Do they. I think the biggest thing is it used to be about which Nike did you have. Because everybody had them. I guess there was no question about it. And now I think between the mindset of this new generation, they're not following the trends, they're not trying to fit in, they're K being totally free spirited and where, whatever the hell they want to wear. And then I think when Nike went to a lot of the lefty, the community doors and went to direct to consumer, it gave other brands an opportunity to have some existence. And no matter what, there's nothing

like going into a store and trying on a shoe. I don't care how much online shopping you do. You want to put that shoe on and look in that mirror, look down, look up, look down, look in the mirror, look back down, look back in the mirror. That's the whole dance that you do. And then it's also something to do. Like it gets people out of the house. They go with their friends, they go to the mall, they go wherever. And it's like an activity to do. They go shopping. There's something social about that that people want to comfort to do, Max. I'm telling you, comfort has really changed the game. Comfort has really changed the game. And then there's also, if I'm like, I'm not too hard on myself because how long can you reign supreme? Right? You've been number one for, I don't know how long. Eventually, that's going to, that's going to happen. Now, the question is internally, are you, are you actually paying attention? And are you willing to make some changes? Or are you just like

whatever it's not that big of a deal? We'll turn things around. It depends on the attitude you have. It's a brand. But I thought it was very interesting, but it's just a different time now. It's been different. And I told you before, the moment the basketball shoe was no longer a D. Go to shoe, there was opportunity. I think also, and this, this can get lead into the next topic. But in the 80s, there were three mics that like the world had never seen before, right? There's Michael Jackson, who's the biggest pop star of all time. Like I know, Prince has a lot of fans. And for some reason, they're compared, even though they're not similar at all. No, it's Michael Jackson. But, but, but Michael Jackson was easily like there is no second place, really. He's number one by himself, biggest pop star ever. And he was something, you know, for starting with the moonwalk at night at Motown 25, like it just, oh, we've never seen this. Before, what is this? Right? That actually exploded. Motown 25 exploded hip hop more than any,

like more than Beats Street or Break-in or, or, you know, or, or run DMC or, or, or Meli Mel, or like whoever you want, whatever, like seminal moment in hip hop, you want to talk about. Motown 25 actually once he did the moonwalk and people got interested in that kind of dancing, that exploded everything. And so like there was Michael Jackson. There was obviously Mike Tyson, which we could talk about in a second. Mike Tyson was, you know, it was like ding, ding round one. He was coming to kill you. He was knocking people out like a video game. They're flying across the ring and, and Michael Jordan. And what it like, oh my god, what is this? It's like, it's like Dr. J 2.0, but he's better at everything than every was unbelievable. Nike was built on MJ, who was different than anyone else at a, at this like moment in the 1980s, where there was a, like it was, it was a, like a time of economic growth and political stability. And like everything,

it was a perfect storm. And, and they had the guy. And that blew up worldwide at a time of unbelievable growth for the NBA. That's in the 90s, Max. Yeah, it like, it started, it started in the 80s. It started in the mid 80s, right? Like I, the, when was the first Jordan's 85? 85. Yeah. 85. So it started right in the middle of the 80s, right? Like back to the future is in what else started in the 80s? Oh, we, we've discussed this. I know where you're going with this, actually. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But rich has a whole thing about for people who haven't watched. That was the original whiteboard. Yeah, the original whiteboard, right? The explosion of crack and how that tied into sneaker sales. Well, is that what you're referring to? Yeah, but it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's because it's not just that. It's that, but also our fathers did not wear sneakers. They didn't wear sneakers. They were shoes. Sneakers became a thing in the 80s,

right? The idea that what I'm going to wear on my feet every day is going to be a pair of sneakers. Not a pair of shoes, stacey Adam spectators, et cetera. I'm going to wear sneakers. My dad did not wear sneakers. I don't think your dad wore sneakers. They wore shoes. In the 80s, here comes sneakers. In addition to that, like you said, here comes hip hop, here comes Michael Jordan, here comes the crack epidemic. But within that, whose way sneakers and abundance is not older people is younger people. How are younger people buying these sneakers? Accessively, they don't have jobs to do that. So there was an excessive consumer built within this rapid cash flow, which all stemmed from. And then, and you mentioned also about how the hustlers were like the original influencers because they were the neighborhood heroes who are

top and then it became an object of like conspicuous consumption and people wanted it. And it was but I think that I think a lot of that's right. But the Michael Jordan phenomenon, with there's no way to really replicate that. You would need a guy now who's just coming on the scene who could somehow revolutionize. And also it can't be I don't think now. Yeah, I don't think you can because it also can't be a giant like Wembee. I don't think if you're looking to sell sneakers. It has to be something. And even if it's like a fantastic all around game athlete, it's already been done. There was George, and then there was Kobe, and then there was Lebron. And there's no way to do it as an original right now. Yeah, but you don't get that freshness back. You gotta remember right? You had bird and magic with the weapons. Yeah. You you had that. I remember in 19. Mm hmm. But they weren't moving. Converse like that. No, but they were moving. Converse like that.

But also, but again, back in listen, there was a race to the finish in like 87. I remember there was Patrick Ewing's had those orange and blue. There was Jordan's obviously had those. There were the converse. Converse didn't really wear those. There was deodorist, lotto's, British nights. Yes, yes, troops. Yes. Um, and then but again, nobody, the re-box didn't make a basketball shoe yet. The original re-box came out in that like cream color with the navy blue and red and they had a white pair. And then obviously, Philos. They'll say deodorist, but it was a it was nobody really had to lead. Nike took the lead after in a they took it

and never looked back after the Olympics to 99 1992 Olympics. It's when Nike took the lead. And they never looked back. I mean, I think I think the back of before then. No, look, I can tell you that in 19, you know enough to where they didn't have to look over their shoulder. Well, okay, because they were because they were growing, but at least in New York, in like the early 80s, the three sneakers that everyone wanted were Adidas, Puma's and Nike's, but Nike was third, right? This Jordan comes on the scene and Nike goes to one and people weren't even seen in anything. I guarantee you, if you look at the data, because here's what you got to understand, Max, because sometimes it's been so long ago, you start to condense the years. Uh, yeah, that's true. Remember, run DMC made my Adidas. Yeah, that's number three. Yeah. Okay, you had the converse, you had the weapons, etc. But if you go back and look at the data,

you had everything from cross training, bow nose, yeah, then you had obviously the 1992 Olympics. What you just said, Rich, is that that's the answer to how Nike could regain that position is, it's not going to be a basketball player who just plays basketball. There's nothing new under the sun that they can do, right? It's, but, but if there was a multi-sport athlete, like a bow Jackson or a Deon Sanders, if there was a guy who could, who could do like, like a, what show Aotani's doing in baseball, he plays, you know, that he pitches any hits. Great. If there was a guy who was, who was Michael Jordan in two sports, right? And, and, and relatable and, you know, looked good and was athletic and the sneaker company that got that athlete could become the new, the Nike, the new like Nike. No, let me tell you why, because, and this is why Kanye was able to build a $3 billion business. The, the, the young person

doesn't care to be the athlete anymore to the way they're just, there was a hundred percent of young people, especially young men, both of all races that wanted to be the superstar athlete. That pie is now divided. So you may have 40 percent that want to be an athlete, 40 percent that want to be a hip-hop artist, 10 percent that wants to be a creator, and the other 10 percent that just don't give a damn. So the care and the interest has to be there. That's, it was a, it was a, what, it was a, what do you call it? It was a perfect storm. Perfect storm of that. And then here comes the other thing, Max. Culture between music and entertainment from fresh principale there, had on Jordan's, the new Nike's, et cetera. The Martin Lawrence show, these were big, big time shows in living color when they wore them,

any movie, and then music, music. So that's the perfect storm. I just don't see it today. I just remember seeing those threes going like, I'm in the future. The threes came out and I was like, how about look at this thing? I'm in the future. Well, that was definitely a million. How much is it? 120 dollars? It's worth every, I understand why it's 120, whatever it was in the, I get it. It's worth it. Yeah. But Max, you just made another good point. Also remember, price, new balance actually had the first hundred dollars shoot in the 80s. But that, but price point with shoe start going, I remember shoes was 99, 106 with tax, you get the red strings, like 108, whatever in case they'd be, you get to get the cleaner too. So you've got probably like 112, right, spend on the side shoe. Then when they went to like 125, there was 132 with tax, red strings, 136, when they started going to like 160, and when they came with the phone

pauses, when the Arizona team with Mike Bibby and Miles Simon, they, this was so genius. They seeded those teams to 55, where the Miraculous, they seeded the Barclays, they wore them in 93, two in the NCAA tournament early. When they seeded them to those teams that also was like a double down from a marketing perspective. And then the storytelling, the storytelling was the the ice on the cake. And we don't get that anymore. Will you sent me a thing on Mike Tyson? Yes. What was, why did you send me that Mike Tyson thing? We have to play it if we can, but I saw something that showed Mike Tyson at a fight, right? He was fighting, wherever he was fighting. But in the crowd, now again, with today could be AI, whatever, but I don't think it was. I think this was actually true. There was everybody from Jack Nixens,

Jack Nicholson, I'm sorry, Jack Nicholson. Probably both Jack Nicholson and Nicholson. Yeah. Yeah. There was Denzel, young Denzel. There was, there was a young Will Smith. There was Michael Jordan. There was Magic. There was Rob Lowe. There was, what's my guy that played in face-all? John Travolta? Now John, oh, whatever, what's his name is Nick, Nick something. Nick, Nick, Nick, Nicholas Cage. Nicholas Cage, you had all these people at the fight, right? You don't get that at any other sporting event. Yeah. And I'm gonna tell you, but I'm gonna tell you why, man, because a boxing event is a date. If you said to your wife, let's go to game seven of whomever. She may go, but she's put on a hat. She's gonna eat a hot dog and have a have a beer probably

fine. A fight you're gonna get decked out. Yeah. She's gonna have glam. She's gonna have a new dress, new shoes, new bag, jury on. And you, you can't be looking like a smug going to the game, next going to the fight next year, wife. You got to get suited and booted as well. Well, you know where I am. I'm wearing a tuxedo. Call on the fight. Exactly. Yeah. But, but, but the fight just is just different in itself. Now, when you add Mike Tyson to that, it brings out everybody. I guarantee Mike was a cultural phenomenon. He was a co-host worldwide cultural phenomenon. If you just made a documentary based upon the greatest fights of all time and the people that were actually there, I guarantee you, it was probably 60 to 70% of those that matter to sports entertain. Do you know who was the photographer? You know who the photographer was for Ali Frazier one.

No, okay, because it was 19. So, so, because Ali was away for three and a half years when they took his license away, because he wouldn't take the step forward to be inducted into the arm. Yeah. So, they had a tournament to crown a champion and Joe Frazier wanted and Frazier was a wrecking machine, right? And how many so how many people did he fight for the tournament? He probably fought three guys. Three or four. Okay. He knocked out in the tournament. He wanted against Jimmy Ellis, but he beat a couple other guys along the way. That's pretty cool. Was a stable maid of Ali's, but anyway, so somehow it wound up that both Ali and Frazier who were both undefeated, were both the undisputed heavyweight champions of the world fighting to see who the real undisputed heavyweight champion of the world was Frank Sinatra was the photographer for life magazine for that fight, because Sinatra wanted the best seat he could get. And if he was the photographer

for life, they let him sit on the ring apron. Like that's how, like, but could you imagine a event so big that Sinatra, because we're talking about Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, 30 years before those guys Sinatra was Michael was Michael Jackson, like he was the biggest thing in the world. So the fact that he is the photographer, right? Nothing brings them out like a fight when there's a cultural icon in the fight. And Mike Tyson was an icon. Yes, and Max, the feeling you get, I remember going to fights. I was there for Mayweather Marquez. I was there for who was it? Shane. Shane. I was there for Pacquiao. I think when Pacquiao fought mostly. I went to a lot of, I was there for Tarvory Jones. Tarvory Jones, Deppie there sitting right there ringside, Mayweather McGregor, Triple G, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, canelo, twice.

We were just there, canelo Crawford. Yeah. If you like, if you like people watching, a main, like, a major prize fight. It's nothing like it. There is no Mike Tyson in terms of bringing them out. There is no Mike Tyson, but, but, and usually there isn't a Mike Tyson. Like, like in boxing history, the only Mike Tyson's there've been, there was Jack Dempsey, Joe Lewis, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson. Those were the four guys who brought people out to watch them unlike anybody. They were the brought them out. No, they were the brought them out. Yeah. But not on the level, the money, yes, because by that point, distribution was different. Mayweather was a huge star, but in terms of worldwide attention. I agree. Because this guy is fighting, no matter who they're fighting. The guy has own video game, Mike Tyson's punch out. Which by the way, one of the best video games ever, still to you stay. There was a, before there was Mike Tyson punch out, there was the original punch out where the guy was, the guy you were playing as an arcade game. And he was like a green, he was like a guy,

but you could see through him. It was like green criss-cross was what his body was made of. So you could see the opponent. And there was one, what was this place called? There was a donut shop on, on 14th Street, Twin Donuts. And they had the original punch out arcade game. When they, when they came out with that game, and they had it at Twin Donuts, it was on 8th Avenue and 14th Street. I used to show up with five bucks and quarters. And if you showed up to play that game that day, you were asked out, because I was, I had all my quarters up on the game. To play that game, that was my activity for the day. That was my activity for the day. Yeah, all right. Listen, Mike Tyson spent a lot of time in Cleveland. When I was young, very young, he dated a girl, and Eddie Rowe was in heart right there. And he would have his Porsche. He was in Cleveland a lot back then in the 80s. Yeah, Mike got around back then. Yeah, but you know, Don Kings from Cleveland. So yeah, of course, Rand Summers in Cleveland. There was this story from Tristan Thompson

talking to a guy you may have heard about. Drainmon Grimm. Oh, I saw this with Drainmon. Let's listen to it. Let's listen to Tristan tell the story. Good Cleveland final replacement for Tristan Thompson. And the answer was no. So what Rich always said to Dan Gilbert, it's what's the cost of winning a championship? Is winning a championship worth 82 million? Dan Dan sat down and he said, yeah, we got to pay. We got to pay. We got to raise tickets. Rich said, figure it out. Raise ticket prizes. Raise parking, figure it out, but you'll make it up somehow. So it was the one of the story that you raised ticket, you raised parking prices across the city of Cleveland. What is this? You single-handedly raised parking. Here's the thing though, double T. He left out the best part of that story. What was it? First of all, he's right. That was our position at the time. Did that conversation take place? You went into Dan Gilbert's office. He's at 52. You're saying Tristan should get 82. There's a $30 million difference. And you look at, I'm going to tell you the story.

I was there. And you look at Dan Gilbert and you say, Dan, you looking right in the eye, you say, what's the championship worth? Worth 30 mil? Listen, first of all, again, he left. He left. He left so much out Tristan did. This guy is not a great storyteller. He left so much out. First of all, he's right in terms of, we did not think that the calves could replace Tristan. No offense to Sasha Khan. We did not think that. But Max, when I tell you, this thing didn't start in July. That year, you got to remember, Tristan was a restricted free agent. And so I never forget where I was at because I was in Phoenix going to the Phoenix Suns game because we had Bled and Bled had just did his new deal. And the calves were opening up in Chicago this night. I think it was on Halloween or close to Halloween like the day before Halloween. We get to offer. Wasn't even close to Halloween, you guys.

We get to offer Tristan's on the bus actually going to the game because you still had time, whatever the case may be. It's before you played the first game in season. So the four years, 38 million, they were comparing him. His comp was like Taj Gibson. So we say no to that. They started it 438. Yes. And the end point with the end point was 82. But here's what you got to understand. We say no to that. It gets up to 42, 48. By the time he's on the bus going to play the Bulls, it was that four years, 52. Once you say no to this, he now has to play the season. By the way, as Juicy J said, you want to know who's really real start telling people no. Said no work, that no work like a charm. Yeah, we say no. So that he plays his season out. Now mind you, he's not starting. He's coming off the bench.

He's not starting. He's come off the bench because he got my score. So he's come off the bench and he plays the season. He plays the five. He plays it back of five. Yeah. So he's having a pretty good year. And what I knew is what Tristan was really great at. And people, if you don't know ball, you'll look at him and say, oh, this or that. He don't shoot the ball, etc. Acts any coach, when you can switch with your big, when you can switch one through five with a guy like Tristan and he's smart extra possessions to office of rebounds, being able to roll and he was smart enough to be able to pass, make the extra pass on so forth. And so I had the conversation with Tristan, just make sure that you stay alive with Bronn because he's going to get you six points. Just offer your role and become a great, great screen center, which he did.

Do you before that or yeah, or maybe two years before that, he had a shot block more than anybody. So anyway, he comes out of that. They now have this team. And I think one of the things that people don't realize is people think like, oh, the brom was in there and told the cast, pay Tristan all this money. Star players don't care how much money another player is getting paid. They just want the person on the team when the season starts. So now remember, we play, he plays a season out. So now we go into restricted free agency. What do you get? What do you mean? What do you get? What was he paid that year? It was a four picking a draft. He probably was paid $8 million or something like that. All right, so it's good. But like, you know, so they were basically not offering them a raise hardly the first offer, barely a raise. Yeah, I forget what's in the news. Yeah, but but but what happened was. So now he plays the year out. Remember, they they lose in the in the finals.

They lose to the world in 15. 14 15. 14 15. Yeah, yes, they lose to the Warriors. But remember Kevin love and got hurt. Yeah, but Kevin love got hurt in the first in the first round against Boston. That's when Olanick hurt his shoulder. Right. So now Tristan started. They played that series against the bulls, etc. He's getting double doubles. So now we are restricted free agency. Tristan restricted free agency started in July. Tristan didn't sign his deal into October 25th. Now he missed all of the following years training camp. He missed media day. He missed everything. But here's the thing Max. When I told Tristan, and this is a true story, I never told this story before. At the Tristan was down and the team was doing team stuff

in Miami because LJ had his place down there. And so they was going down there and they were training. Like the guys do now team camaraderie. Tristan was already there. I told Tristan when the team checks into this hotel, you check out. If you see these guys in the lobby, don't even speak to them. LeBron included. Don't even speak to him. He has his money already. We got to focus on you. So I moved Tristan out of the four seasons on Brickle and we moved him somewhere else. He did not work out with the team at all. No communication, no group chats. Don't even speak to those guys. Nothing. And he did this all summer by the way. This is not like a thing where it's July 1 and then July 10th he signed his deal. And you didn't get any calls from one of your other clients who I might think of saying, Yo Rich, what's up with Tristan? Now when did I get calls from? I got calls from coaches, shoe companies, everything.

But if you ask any of those people, listen man, I don't represent players in a group. I represent players individually. You got your money. I'm focused on Tristan Thompson. We're not focused on anybody else. I don't care if he misses the whole season. I really don't care. What's important is this thing here. And we, you know, we end up signing October 25th. Yeah. For 82. For 82. But here's the other thing. Long way between 38 and 82. Yeah, but here's the thing. I didn't major in math, but it seems to me there's 44 million. So it was Dan and Nate Forbes at the time. And, you know, it was myself and I had another partner at the time. And, you know, everybody had who they talked to or whatnot. And the thing about it is, Tristan does say this partner story.

We were asking for five years, $94 million, which was the max at the time. The deal between July and October, the deal was taken off the table three times. No deal deals off the table. We're not offering nothing. Deal put back on, deal taking off, deal put back on, deal taking off. So we finally get to a place which was the last thing five years 82. Now, prior to that, I speak to Dreymon on the phone. I never forget this. It's funny these two doing his interview because I don't even know if they know this, but maybe they do. I did not represent Dreymon, but I talked to Dreymon at this time. And I was on the phone and Dreymon told me that he was signing for five years 82.

And I was like, Dreymon, you could get the max, like, won't you just, and he's like, man, rich. I'm from Saginaw, man, like, this is, you know, I was a second round pick. This kind of thing. Dreymon, but when Dreymon told me that he was signing for five years 82. You got to get it done now. Yeah. But let me just tell you why. Dreymon went to Michigan State. So did Dan. He went to Michigan State, Dan Gilbert. I know for a fact that Dan wanted to draft Dreymon. And he didn't. He did, they talked him out of it. Because it is a call, Dan, about Dreymon. And I know this for a fact. So when this takes place, I instantly call Tristan, and I say, they're going to offer this money. And it's going to be the end of the road. They offer the money. I call Tristan. You know what he said to me?

No, I'm not taking the deal. I said, what? Because now he's calling the matrix. Like he thinks 94. Yeah, he's like, you said 94. I want 94. I said, WT. There is nothing in this world that you cannot buy with 82. Instead of 94. Yeah. And if you get 82, that you cannot buy literally nothing. And he's like, there's that one house that was 8299. Man, please. If I'm 8299. This guy is like, no. So you know, Lucas, right? Yeah. Lucas is young at the time. So he's not answering his phone. Lucas is an agent at clutch sports. If people are going to say, yeah. So I'm calling Lucas because he's with Lucas. I say, Lucas goes rich. He ran.

He's not in the house anymore. He's down the street. I said, Lucas, you go and put Tristan on the phone. And I said, WT, let me tell you something. I said, you know what? Don't worry about it. I called his mother, Ms. Brooks. She made she rest in peace. Beautiful lady. And at the time, you got to remember Max, everyone's calling. What is Rich doing? He's out of control. He says, and you know what? His mom was so great. You know what she would say to people? People went to her church to talk to her, trying to get him to switch agents. Because they like, they should have been praying for that extra 12 million. What's wrong with them? But you got to think how long this went. Do you know what his mom would say to them? I don't know. She talks to Jamaican accent. I don't know. Call Rich. It's his agent. Call Rich. She was the best. So anyway, man, this guy, so I said, damn.

So you got to, this is where you have to, for all the agents out there, this is where you have to know your client. I knew what WT was thinking. And because he had to do so much to get what he had gotten and get where he had gotten. And you know, he's the, he's the, he's the hard hat guy. He's the pickup truck guy. He's not the Lamborghini Rose Royce Ferrari guy. He's a F 350 type of guy. He's on a dirty work. Got the hard, still told boots on, et cetera. But I knew him. And Chris Broussart, you can go back. Chris Broussart, he put out that the calves are are nearing a five year, 82 million dollar deal for Tristan Thompson. When this happened, the Marcus Cuzn has tweeted, he got how much with the eyes? Because remember, he signed up for your 64 max with the reset. And Buggie, and Buggie back then was, was, yeah, he was all in the NBA.

And one of the sweetest passing scoring bigs you want to see. Demarcus Cuzn is one of the most talented big men that ever played his game. No question about it. And so when, when, when, when that happened, again, perfect storm, I said, WT, I need to get on this plane and get here. I'm not talking about it in a New York minute. I don't even want you to, I don't even want to play in a taxi. I want you to jump out of it at the practice facility so we can get this deal done. And he came up, we got the deal done. But I mean, those things is what, is what, man, you know, it makes the whole thing. And Tristan was unbelievable. And he had been with me since he was 16 years old pretty much all the way through his entire career. And so the fact that he was telling that story to Dreymon, and then, oh, and then I talked to Dan, and Dan was like, well, Rich, I tell you one thing. And then Dan and Closet this day, he's like, man, I definitely would want you.

I would, I would, I have to say, like, you guys are, you're all something else. Because it was, it was, but you know, like, out of all times, you know, people think like you Bicker with teams, no, for 364 days, really out of the count of a year, you guys on the same team, trying to make sure to climb the team does well. And at 365th day, Rich Paul gets you for an extra 44 mil. Are you ready to do these emails? Let's do an email. Let's do an email. Yes, don't right for this. I'm a next fan, and I wholeheartedly disagree with their take on the Clippers Fiasco. I guess this is directed at me. If the next played by the Clippers rules, they could have kept Hart and Steen and Robinson and just paid them all the money on the side. The Avengers slash sponsor side deals. I'm sure the other teams could have done the same, but they didn't do it. Bomber broke the critical rule that impacts the salary cap rules. If you want to dump the cap, it could destroy the league. Robert Rosenbloom. Actually, no, Robert Rosenbloom, that's not right.

That's not what, what, what Bomber did was in trying to obtain a free agent who could go anywhere and get the same exact amount of money from anyone making it a choice, not a financial choice, but rather a choice of fit and all that kind of where he's good, your geography and whatever else. What, what team you've put together, what Bomber did by circumventing the rules is make it back into a financial question, right? He, so, so it's not exactly like the next trying to retain their own players by just being able to offer more money. It's a little bit different. But on top of that, if Nick's fans found out that Dolan figured out a way to circumvent rules to keep Mitchell Robinson and, and I say a heart and a Stein, Nick's fans would be very happy about that. Right. Like, I understand why a non-clippers fan might be upset, but if you're a clippers fan

or even the fan of another franchise, you go kind of like, you know, I know he's breaking the rules, but the rules are not there actually for competitive balance. They're pleased to achieve competitive balance without a salary cap. The rules are there to stop the owners from being competitive with each other to the point that they will pay the players what the market actually determines the players should be paid. They don't want to make their own market because they know that the players are worth more than what they're paying them. That's why there's a salary cap rule. So forgive me if I don't get all indignant about an owner breaking that rule. It's like, you know, not all rules are created equal. I view circumventing the salary cap almost mad at bomber as I am at someone for crossing the street on a red light, which is also against the rules, like, which is to say hardly at all. Anyway, do you have an opinion on this? No, I don't. However, you know, there are rules and if you get caught breaking them, you pay the price

and I just think that price is like, you know, five firsts across the street on a red light. It's like doing life in prison for cleaning. You're doing the, what's the, yes, your honor. I did. I crossed the street on a red light. Okay, 20 years. What? You want to do a voicemail? Yes, doing. Hi, this is Manila of California. First off, great show guys. Love listening to you. First off, first question I would like to ask Max. What would Benavitas have to do for you to have to rank them higher than Canelo as for all time Mexican fighters if you have Canelo ranked higher and for rich as for any of your clients that you had throughout the years, have you ever had a client where you signed with them and they just didn't pan out to where you just had to cancel, you know, being their agent. And if so, does that happen often?

Just kind of want to see a picture of brain. Love you guys, stories. Love you guys inside. Thank you. Just keep doing up to good work. Great show, fellas. You want to take, you want to take that first? Yeah. Have I ever had a client that didn't pan out? I mean, look, I don't go into a situation where you, you know, when you, when someone allows you to represent them, you have to be able to represent them through the ups and the downs. Now, there are situations that mutually you just decide the part ways. Obviously, we work in this environment to where in most cases, you're going to get to blame. You have to understand that. And so, you know, you're going to be fired several times probably throughout your career view. I think he's asking if you've ever fired a client. Yeah, absolutely. Right. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, I have for sure. Yeah.

I mean, the reason I joke about Ben Simmons, Ben Simmons looked like he was on the way to, his way to taking over the world. Like, there was a moment where, remember how the, how the, how the box eventually won with Yannis? He'd be coming downhill, right? And if you doubled him, he would find the open man and the, yeah, shooters. And if you didn't, he'd dam it on you. Like, you know, Ben Simmons was like the, and it looked like that was going to, what could you do to stop it? He would, he could handle. He could pass. He's six foot ten. He was lightning fast. And he'd come down and you really had two bad options. That's, as I always say, that's the actual definition of a dilemma is not a hard choice. It's a choice between two bad options. And when Ben Simmons is on a fast break, you have two bad options, right? And it looked like, oh my God, he's the best. I think I said once on first take, he's the best showing sports right now for a guy to go from there to how he's perceived now is like, it's crazy. I can't think of an exact parallel, right?

Where it didn't happen because of injury or something like that. Yeah, Ben's back on the up, though. I think he just signed with Sacramento, so congrats for that. I'm glad to see Ben back in the league because there's no, there's no world where he doesn't belong in the league. And I think one of the things that was very underrated, not underrated, but that was very glaring about Ben is just no, he had a great feel for the game. Ben naturally knew how to play the game, right? The only thing he couldn't do was shoot. The only thing he couldn't do, but he couldn't do it on a psychotic level. That was what was crazy. Yeah, but that's not true. Again, I think just playing freely and playing not to make mistakes, I think he'll be fine. But just a great feel for the game. Pass and lanes, defensive being. All defensive team, all in, I mean, all NBA team, all start team. I mean, come on, man. Whatever it is, whatever it is, like however you want to characterize it, Rich, it got so bad that he wouldn't even attempt to shoot. It did.

I'm just trying to think of a parallel in sports where a guy has every single thing you want, but want to kill his heel. But that one thing becomes like all encompassing to the point where it ruins him. I don't like, okay, in baseball, the closest thing I can think is Chuck Knoblock started just being unable to throw the ball to first base. I'm in the Chuck Knoblock, right? But he was very good. He was an excellent overall player, but he just forgot how to throw the ball to first base suddenly. I'm excited to see his, his stint in sack. I'm, I'm sending nothing but positive, positive vibes to being because I'm just happy to see him back. I'll answer the part about Benavitis. David Benavitis is a fighter. He's a super middleweight, the Canelo ducked when he was a super middleweight, the only guy Canelo ever ducked. He went up to light heavyweight. He beat guys, but didn't get the fight against the biggest guys in the division. Then he moved up to Cruiserweight and he looked spectacular and he's just a, Benavitis is a special, special fighter.

The fastest hands in combination. Pound for pound, he is in the conversation for fast, for like best combination puncher in terms of hand speed of all time, like in a category with sugar ray Leonard and Meldrick Taylor, guys like that. But he's not Mexican. He's Mexican American. Canelo is like an all time great Mexican fighter. If you want to say just anyone of Mexican heritage, then for Benavitis to pass Canelo, you would have to be recognized as the best pound for pound fighter in the world at least for several years. And would have to, you know, maybe move up to heavyweight and beat the guys there, but Benavitis is so good, I think he could become heavyweight champ. He is a special, special fighter. Rich, I think we've come to the end of the show. Nice. You know, see what's up partner, I am Max. Six o'clock in the morning. I stayed up six.

Okay, everybody. Okay, everybody. Let's see what time, six o'clock in the morning, what time zone could he be in? Figure this out. See, it's six hours. I'm going to, I think you're somewhere in Europe, somewhere. I'm going to say something like that. Maybe it could be, could it be very, very West Africa or where, you know, like I'm just trying to think of, to see if I can let that many. I just early in the morning. A beat juice. Yeah. Hmm, very healthy. Some granola. Yeah, granola. High, granola a little bit overrated. Doesn't taste great. Not very high in calories. Lots of sugar. Not with mango yogurt. Eat it with yogurt. I think the yogurt doesn't take away the sugar. I mean, you ever see that what was one of those weight loss shows where they challenge, the doctor challenges. And I remember these like, there was like a very large woman and I think of sisters. And they weren't losing the weight. And he said like, he's trying to figure out their diet and they drank like X number of

sodas a day. But their mother had told them that, that if you drink a diet soda, it cancels out the sugar from the soda. So they would have like 10 sodas a day, but also 10 diet sodas. You think the mango granola, the mango yogurt nullifies somehow the sugar in the, in the granola? No, that wasn't my point. My point was just like, I like to eat the granola with, with the yogurt. Yeah, I get that. Yeah. You know, with the beet juice, I get there. You can't, the yogurt, the health, but you can't talk about sugar or this, that in the third. And the other day, you had three fish sandwiches. I had two, two, two fish sandwiches, two. Those fish sandwiches are as big as a big Mac. You ate two. They went down like aspirin. That could have had two more. I like to eat. This is what I'm saying. So you tell me, no, because the one fish sandwich canceled out the other one, like the soda and the diets, like your granola and yogurt. You ate two of those fish sandwiches.

Like it was like, you can't even hold it in one hand. Like work, light work. Those fish sandwiches are, as we used to say, dumb good rich. That's impressive. Yeah, that's impressive. All right, listen, you get some sleep or get up and start your dad. I don't know which one to tell you. I wonder why it's called day bird. Should be called day fish. They're closed too many days, speaking of day. I could go get one right now, except they're closed. They're always closed this place. All right, Rich, I see your, what are you going to be, what are you going to be back in L.A.? I don't know. All right. When you see me in the seat next to you. All right. Yeah. In that case, I'll see you in a couple days, either on TV or in the chair. Yeah, you're seeing me in a couple days. Game over with Max Calorita, Rich Paul. Game over with Spotify.com.
