LA King's fans are feeling optimistic and enjoying watching the team play?
What a difference a coaching change makes.
You are Locked On Kings, your daily podcast on the Los Angeles Kings, part of the Locked
On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey, King's fans.
Welcome to Locked On LA Kings.
I'm Eddie Garcia.
Today's episode is brought to you by Game Time.
Download the Game Time app, create an account and use the code Locked On for $20 off your
first purchase.
All today's show, King's fans have changed their attitude about this team since Jim
Hiller was let go and DJ Smith was brought in.
It's another King's fan feedback show.
Let's waste no time and get to your emails.
I will read them in the order in which they were received.
We start with Bill Anderson.
He's in Winnetka and he actually sent two emails in.
We're going to combine them into one.
The first one asked, what are the King's goals allowed in the final five minutes of games
since DJ Smith took over his head coach?
I'm going off of memory, but there were two, I believe, in the Colorado game.
There were two in today's game against New Jersey in the last five minutes.
Montreal, there may have been two.
That's six right there.
The King's may be burning out at the end of games.
That was his first email.
His second email was Adrian Kempay.
I thought I noticed him or better to say I didn't notice him.
I thought there was a power play in the third period against the flyers.
He didn't come out for check the tape about our Timmy Pinaran.
We've already seen this maneuver multiple times, including the third period of the game
against the flyers.
Pinaran receives the puck near the top left face-off dot.
He starts heading towards the blue line.
There is normal traffic in front of the net, ideally going from left to right.
He wheels around and shoots short side high, hopefully before the goalie resets after
traffic goes by.
I have to say it's a thing of beauty when it works and that Bill also added that he likes
to nitpick me on things because he loves me, which Bill, you sound a lot like my wife.
But to answer your question, Bill, I did go back and check how many goals have the
Kings allowed since the coaching change in the final five minutes of the game.
You were right.
There was two against Colorado.
One was an empty netter.
There was one against the islanders.
That was the first game against New York in LA.
There were technically two against Montreal.
One of them came like at 15 minutes and five seconds, so I think it's fair to include
that in there.
There was one against Columbus, none against Boston, none against the islanders in New York,
and there were two against New Jersey, as you said, none against Philadelphia.
The number is, it's eight, it's technically seven, but we're going to call it eight.
In the final five minutes of games since DJ Smith has been brought on a said coach, the
Kings have allowed eight goals in the final five minutes of a game.
You talking about them being worn out because they're playing this newer, more aggressive,
higher tempo style, it could be some validity to that.
It's not a, it's not a wild theory.
We'll keep an eye on it going forward.
I'm sure you will as well.
As for Adrian Kemping, not coming out on the power play in the third period for the Kings
against the Flyers.
I did check the tape.
He was out there.
He started out there on the power play, played for about a minute.
Kings didn't do anything.
He went off Penaire and stayed on, and then the second unit came on, and that's when Penaire
and scored the power play goal to tie it up and get the Kings a point against Philadelphia.
Luis is in Santa Paula, he says that's in Ventura County, he says, I feel DJ Smith is doing
a pretty decent job, can't get a good winning streak going, but clearly the team is doing
better.
If he somehow gets us in the playoffs, can't he be our guy?
Or gets us past the first round, we'd be a lot to have him.
Or regardless, do we still go after a new coach?
By the way, love the show, listen to it while I do cardio with the gym, makes it a lot
easier.
Go Kings go.
That was Luis in Santa Paula, all the dreaded cardio.
All right, personally, I would not hire DJ Smith as the King's next head coach, unless
something truly miraculous were to happen, like the King's with a couple rounds in the
playoffs.
I still think there are more proven coaches out there.
We'll talk about one of them coming up in just a bit.
That is to say, of course, those top men need to want to want the job.
If the King's have a list of coaches and they all say no thanks, then sure, I would consider
DJ Smith.
If the team continues to show positive signs under him as head coach, I would be, I would
not be shocked if the King's promoted DJ Smith to be full time head coach.
I'm telling you what I would do.
If the King's get into the playoffs, I would almost be, I would be pretty certain that
they would name DJ Smith as full time head coach.
I believe the last name here is Kite.
It's spelled K-Y-T-E.
Tyler Kite and Tyler, if I'm wrong about that, I apologize.
From Menifee, California in Riverside County, checking in, he says, I've been in every
day or for a few years now, grew up in Orange County, played youth hockey, youth travel
hockey out of Anaheim.
So, hockey's been a big part of my life.
My dad was a King's fan from the beginning, which is why I'm not a Ducks fan.
Oh, a good job, dad.
I says, love your show, a huge fan, appreciate your podcast, and you've taken the time
to do them.
Thank you.
I just chiming in on the coaching change.
I love seeing the team with so much spark and energy, so glad it happened, but hopefully
it's not too late in the season.
Just a quick thought, tried searching for stats on teams this year who had not been shut
out, but couldn't find it.
Since I know we are one of them, which is cool.
I found that we hold the record for the longest streak without being shut out 264 games
between 1986 and 1989.
The closest next team was Chicago with 262 from 1979 and 1973.
Now, it's Tyler in Menophe.
Well, Tyler, you are correct about the King's not being shut out yet this season, knock
on wood as the recording of this show, but I also looked in to see if there were any
other teams this year that had yet to have been shut out, and I actually couldn't find
it either.
But I did check about the record for the most number of games played in NHL history without
being shut out.
I actually found the Calgary Flames held the record with 264.
So you had the right number, but I think you had the wrong team.
Now, the Kings were second on the list that I saw with 261 consecutive games without being
shut out.
And it was from 1986 to 1989, as you had mentioned.
So not sure if you were off or I was off, but that's what I found as far as that goes.
Luke Intemecula-Jex, and he says, hey, Eddie, this free agent class is not looking very
good, but I came up with two trade ideas for the Kings to give a look at taking into account
the assets we have.
I'm thinking about adding Gage Conzkolvis to the offense at Martin Farah Varie to the
defense.
Conkolvis is used to playoffs and plays with great linemates.
He's extremely cheap on his contract.
From what I know, he's also has the ability to play center.
He would bring some scoring and some defense, which would be great.
Farah Varie is fantastic defensively, he has some offense.
He's also pretty cheap in his contract.
He would be much more expensive, but I think it would be very much worth it.
Would either of these players interest you?
Thanks again, Go Kings Go, and that was from Luke Intemecula.
Those are a couple of out of the blue names that you bring up, but Gage Conkolvis plays
with the Tampa lightening.
He's a winner.
He plays on the second line for Tampa Bay.
It's pretty good.
He's 25 years old.
Now, he is signed through next season at 1.2 million.
He's got 11 goals, 26 points at 59 games.
Those numbers are just okay, but he was only played in five playoff games, so he does
not have a lot of playoff experience.
Personally, I don't see a need to trade for him.
I'm not saying he couldn't be an okay player, but I'd rather give a guy like Jared Wright
a full season to see what he can do.
I mean, he's already in the organization.
We wouldn't have to spend assets on that player.
So I'd rather give him a shot, then go out and get somebody like Gage Conkolvis.
As for Martin Farah Varie, he's 26, plays for the Washington Capitals.
He's a left shot defenseman.
He'll give you around five goals and 25 points for season, but the Capitals just signed
him in 2025 to a seven-year extension that kicks in next season.
He'll make six million a year.
So it sounds like he's pretty locked in there for Washington.
It sounds like they want him and he wants to stay there.
So, Kings are going to be looking for a top six center.
That's their priority.
I think everything else is secondary at this point.
I don't know that Gage Conkolvis is a top six center, by the way.
Is DJ Smith the answer beyond this season?
We were kind of asked about that already.
We'll get a little deeper into that.
That's next here on Lockdown LA Kings your team every day.
College basketball is nonstop, especially now with the tournament in full swing.

Few things are as uplifting as the greatest moments in sports and nothing brings us together
quite like team USA at the Olympic winter games from NBC Universal's iconic storytelling
to the innovative technology across Xfinity and peacock.
Comcast brings the Olympic Games home to America, sharing every moment with millions.
When team USA steps onto the world stage, we're not just watching, we're cheering together.
This winter, we're all on the same team, Comcast, proud partner of team USA.
All right, continue with your emails.
Brian number one in Huntington Beach, check.
Xfinity says rumors are running rampant about the likelihood of Craig Baroube getting the
axe this off season.
Our member here in USA, he's the type of coach the Kings need.
Do you still feel this way given how things are going for him in Toronto?
Should the Kings pursue him if he's available?
And lastly, how much influence did the chance of Fire Hill or have on Ken Holland?
If that moment had never happened, would Hiller still be the head coach?
Thanks for another great week of shows.
Go Kings go.
And that was Brian number one in Huntington Beach.
I honestly don't think the Fire Hiller chance had anything to do with it.
What had to do with it was the 6-1 behind kicking that we got from the Evans and Oilers.
And ironic that the Oilers actually get us a favor with that win.
As for Craig Baroube, if the Toronto Maple Leafs do fire him after this season, I would
absolutely consider him.
Now he wouldn't be at the very top of my list, but he would be on my list.
So I think what's gone wrong in Toronto is a lot deeper than the head coach.
So that would not prevent me from wanting to hire him.
He won a cup in St. Louis not that long ago.
I think he'd be a good coach for the LA Kings.
But again, not at the top of my list.
Chris from San Fernando says, I just walked out a crypto after the Flyers game, boy,
what a messy game.
In context to this, I've only been to two games this year, the opening night game, and
this one.
With that in mind, the Kings are really different post-Hiller.
They're more aggressive.
They actually started scoring, but they are sloppy.
The Kings are going to drag themselves into playoffs out of spite.
Will it be pretty no, but it should be fun to watch Go Kings go, Chris in San Fernando.
We'll see.
I've taken the attitude of let's see what happens.
Let's just get in and see what happens.
But yes, I think everybody's in agreement.
There is a new spirit.
There is a new attitude.
The record, though, four, three and two needs to be better.
It needs to be better for the Kings to get in the playoffs.
We like the way they're playing.
It is more fun, but the results got to be the results.
Vinnie in Burbank says, here, just after the Kings lost in a shootout of the Flyers, I
went to the game and I had a great time.
It was an intense game.
Had me on the edge of my seat, basically, the whole time because I knew the Kings needed
at least a point after the entire Pacific Division lost with three being shut out.
I may be playing myself, but I finally have hope in the Kings team.
This will definitely come back to bite me, but they look so much better under DJ Smith,
including players like Byfield who had a sick goal.
And Clark who continues to amaze me with his defensive play.
I like the team and I believe in them for the future as long as we attain a decent
center.
We'll be all right.
I hope they don't trade Q anytime soon because it's my favorite player.
Thanks.
Love the pod.
And that was Vinnie in Burbank.
Well, I think the only way that Quentin Byfield's involved in a trade is if it's for a pretty
big name player in return.
So otherwise, I don't see the Kings moving on from Quentin Byfield at this point.
I think we'll all have our fingers crossed that next season might be the season for Q.
You mentioned, Brent Clark, he has stepped up.
He has taken a step forward.
I've been happy with his progress this year.
He's been a not a pleasant surprise.
He's been as what we would hope for him to take that step forward.
I will say there's one criticism about Brent Clark for me.
I wish he would be a little more aggressive taking the puck to the net.
He is not afraid to crash the net without the puck.
And I know he flips those pucks in very well, very skillfully from the blue line.
But I'd like to see him take it to the net a little bit more.
I think he could do that and do a good job with that.
At least to create scoring opportunities, rebounds, things like that.
Dave in Seattle checks in.
He says, not long ago, the idea of the LA Kings being in the playoff race felt like a
reach.
And yet here they are still hanging around.
Still within striking distance.
Let's be honest, this is not a team that screams playoff contender.
The inconsistency is real.
And on paper, they probably have no business being in the hunt.
They are getting a boost from a Pacific division that's been, let's call it forgiving.
There has most definitely been a change under interim coach DJ Smith.
The Kings have ditched the passive sitback style and now playing a much more aggressive
game.
They're forechecking hard, pressuring early and forcing mistakes instead of waiting
around.
It's faster.
It's scrappier.
And it's a lot more fun to watch.
That doesn't make him a lead, but it does make them dangerous and spurts.
And in a division where nobody's really separated themselves, that's been enough to keep
them alive.
If they do sneak into the playoffs, it won't be because they suddenly figured everything
out.
It'll be because they changed their identity just enough.
I'll be it not soon enough.
I took advantage of the opportunity in front of them.
And honestly, it would feel pretty similar like the old Smith division days when the Kings
would squeak in as the fourth team out of five, not dominant, not pretty, but in the dance.
Go Kings go.
And that was Dave in Seattle.
Like I said, my attitude is, let's just get in and see what happens.
And if it is Colorado, what the hell, we've got nothing to lose, weird to kind of say that
considering the King's recent playoff history.
But I don't know.
That's the attitude I'm taking.
Let's just get in and let's see what happens.
Fans are saluting Captain on Jay Kobatar.
We'll talk about that next year and locked in early Kings your team every day.

Sergeant Dylan Clark in San Diego checking in, I'm loving DJ Smith so far, no matter the
short sample size.
I feel like I can already see an 180 degree in attitude and vibes of the team.
My only social media is YouTube, so I don't know if it was a thing already, but the Kings
started posting post-game locker room stuff on YouTube.
I love the speeches DJ gives and really love the player of the game getting a beer.
Girls like Broco did, like what a team that really loves each other would do, more than
a gimmicky hat.
Don't know if I'm smoking Hopium or if there is a brighter future for this team now, but
I'll ride this high while I can.
That was Dylan Clark in San Diego.
I actually have not seen the new tradition that they may have under DJ Smith.
I haven't seen that where somebody gets a beer, I guess.
Certainly a little more blue collar of a celebration.
Don't just agree, obviously, though, about the positive vibes and the attitude.
Scott C. Me Valley checks in, he says, hey Eddie, and congrats on hitting the 5,000 mark.
Thank you very much.
He says, we're about 10 games into the DJ Smith era, and it looks as if Ken and Luke were
partially right months ago, and saying the Kings were close.
They're close to dusting off the golf clubs.
The Lost Affiliate is a good example.
The kids coming into the NHL today are better coached and more skilled than ever.
We lost a point because we suck and shootouts, and the kids in Philly don't, and the flyers
aren't even the best example.
Look at Anna Heim, San Jose and others.
A rebuild or a major retool and new leadership will come.
We just don't know when.
But I'm having lots of fun rooting for my team and especially for Copi.
I've seen a lot of smiles on his face.
He's enjoying his last games and he's a point for game player, which is fantastic, and
this team is now fun to watch.
Thank you for mentioning Marcel Dionne and your tribute to Copi.
Dionne was spectacular, but a completely different type of player.
His 1,307 points came in almost 600 games fewer played as a king, and he's just seven
goals short of Luke in about 150 less games in a robot type.
Dave Taylor is right there too, plus Taylor had as many penalty minutes as all three put
together.
Still there is no doubt, Anjie Copatar is the best king ever.
Copi is far more complete of a player, and the two cups ain't bad either.
We are watching some of the greatest King's history of all time, and I hope everyone isn't
enjoying it as much as I am with Anjie Copatar.
Thank you for all you do, Eddie.
Go Kings Go, go Copi Go, and that was Scott in Seamy Valley.
Definitely agree about Anjie Copatar, certainly the way he's playing lately has been a lot
of fun to watch.
Seems like he's going to make every effort to go out swinging as far as trying to get
into the past spot, and also kind of letting it fly a little bit.
He looks like he's enjoying playing hockey again.
I don't know if that was the case earlier in the year.
He's having fun.
That's not a bad thing, as his career is coming to a close.
Andy in Guilf, Ontario says, I'm completely eating my words after saying a coaching
change wouldn't really help the team.
Shame on me.
The Montreal and Devils games are frustrating.
I don't like these five to ten minute brainfarts that usually result in the net being filled
by the opponent, but overall, I really like the nice change of pace.
Frankly, at this point, I just want to roll with this lineup.
I can't even see a place for Armea and potentially Kuzmanko to return.
Armea, I imagine, will replace Wright, but that speed is elite.
Frankly, Kuzi has no role if he were to become activated for a potential playoffs series.
All this to say, if they remain healthy, all this to say, if they remain healthy.
For next season, I'll be curious what happens.
I love the way Bifield's playing with more and Lafay.
With the all of returning, does that make more expendable as part of a package to get
a first or second line center curious on your thoughts?
Let's enjoy the last 14 kilometers here, and that was Andy in Guilf.
I agree that when Joel Armea returns, which apparently could be as soon as Saturday against
Philadelphia, or excuse me, against Buffalo, I think he definitely replaces Jared Wright.
I do love Wright's speed.
I agree with you, but Armea just brings a lot more to the table.
It's experience offensively and defensively.
He's a better player.
He doesn't have the speed, but he's got a lot of other things, so I think he definitely
replaces Jared Wright, Kuzmanko is interesting.
I could see him replacing Turkot in the lineup.
As for next season, I agree.
I like the way Trevor Moore has been playing since the Olympic break, but the Kings have
to get a top six center, and if Trevor Moore needs to be included in that, then so be
it.
Ed in Brea checks, and he says congrats to Ajay Kobatar on passing Hall of Fame or Marcel
Dionne as the King's all-time leading scorer to go along with his all-time leading and
assists and games played.
I always held back saying Kopey was not the goat.
Now after surpassing Dionne and points, after thinking about it, I have surrendered the
title to him, even though he was not gifted like Dionne, Kobatar is a complete player.
Multiple Selkie winner, a gentleman lady being, he's won two cups, most seasons in points
assists, etc., rightfully so he is now the King of Kings.
My Olympic medal positions continue with gold tenders in King's history.
This one is obvious, Rogue Vashon, Kelly Rooney, and Jonathan Quick.
Gold is quick, silver is Vashon, and bronze is Rudy.
Speaking of quick, his handshake with Kobatar at MSG is now legendary and nostalgic, and
that was Ed in Brea.
Yes, I will go with you on your gold, silver, and bronze as far as ranking the gold tenders
in King's history, John of the Quick, gold, Rogue Vashon, silver, and Kelly Rooney with
the bronze.
Quick shout out to Henry and Spokane Washington.
He sent an email asking me to pass his number on to Gary and court the lane Idaho, because
he wants a King's fan in his area to be able to talk hockey with.
So Henry, I have passed your number along, Gary, give Henry a call.
I guess Spokane and court the lane are not far from each other.
Just a quick announcement, I will be at the King's Sabre's game on Saturday.
It's a 1 p.m. Pacific time start, shout out to every day or J, who has invited me to
go along with him.
So I'll be there as a fan, getting to cheer, and hopefully see the King's win, tough game
against the Buffalo Sabres who are flying high right now, but it will be fun to see the
King's take on.
One of the best teams in the NHL, let's see what happens.
That's my new thing.
Let's just go out there and see what happens, but that's going to be a very tough game.
A great opportunity for the King's to get two points against a really, really good team.
Let's see if they do it.
I'm really interested to see who starts in net.
I mentioned it the other day when we did the recap of the Flyers game.
Darcy Kemper is fighting it right now.
I would go with Anton Forsberg, let's see what DJ Smith decides to do.

We are at Lockdown LA Kings.
I guess they should add real quick.
I mentioned this in the previous show, but there were no games on Friday that were of
any impact to the Kings and the Wildcard race.
So the Kings are still as we go into Saturday's action, holding on to the final Wildcard spot
in the West.
All right.
I'm Eddie Garcia.
If you want to see more of me, you can check out Lockdown NHL game night.
It's a nightly podcast and YouTube show that recaps the night in the NHL and the
Puck podcast, a weekly NHL review show that I have been a part of for 20 years covering
the NHL.
All right.
I'm Eddie Garcia.
Thanks for listening and watching Lockdown LA Kings, part of the Lockdown podcast network.
Your team every day.
Have a great rest of your day.
See you next time.
And as always, go Kings Go.
