Welcome to the resistance. Do we, as Americans, value public education? Every state in the nation has some kind of constitutional provision requiring a public education system. But do we really value public education? Let me put it another way. Do we care if our kids are learning anything in school?

1:00Before we had president Kennedy, we basically had the same educational system of reading, writing, and arithmetic that our pioneers had in their one-room schoolhouses. And then Kennedy challenged us to create an education system that could take us to the moon. And America responded. Education was reformed, and our schools were valued by the people like they never were before. We had a good run for about 20 years. Then Republicans noticed how much money we invested in public education and colleges. And we went from honoring James Madison when he said, knowledge will forever govern ignorance. Had a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. We went from that to letting our public schools become business opportunities for the education and industrial complex. Every year we spend more and more on testing with less and less on learning.

2:01We spend more and more on elaborate security measures that move our schools closer to prison environments than education learning environments. And we starve our public schools of funds so we can build more prisons. Coincidence? I don't think so. I think a certain group of people remember Madison's words and want a population without the knowledge to govern themselves. That would explain why policymakers never focus on the actual learning factor of educational budgeting. I submit that they get away with this because as I said before, every state constitution requires a public education system. But neither the US Constitution nor any state constitution says that a child has a right to be educated. Politicians like to talk about parents' rights, but they don't talk about the students' right to be to an education because it doesn't exist,
