How Jerry McNamara became the head coach of Syracuse Basketball.
You are Lockdown Syracuse, your daily podcast on the Syracuse Orange.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hi, everyone. Jackson Hulser locked on Syracuse on today's show Syracuse Basketball
is set to play Providence in a non-conference basketball showdown next season.
We will talk about that later on in the show.
Plus the pros and cons of Syracuse hiring Jerry McNamara as its next tech coach.
But we are going to lead the show today talking about some insight
how it all came to be Jerry McNamara becoming the head coach of Syracuse Basketball.
There has obviously been a lot of reporting out there since Jerry McNamara and Syracuse
when it came out that the orange are finalizing a deal with GMAC to become the next tech coach.
Now at the time of this recording it should be noted that it's not technically official.
I haven't seen Syracuse Basketball officially announced it, but given that every insider out there
is saying that this is happening. I think it's fair to assume that Jerry McNamara is going to be
the head coach of Syracuse Basketball. And CBS Sports is Matt Norlander. He provided some great insight
regarding what exactly happened behind the scenes with Syracuse and the head coach search.
And ultimately how Jerry McNamara got the job. And that's what we're going to dive into on today's show.
Let's start off with something that I think we're all curious about. Who is the runner up
for the job? It appears that the runner up, the second most likely person to become the Syracuse
Basketball head coach was St. Louis's Josh Shirts. Now according to Matt Norlander, the orange were
looking for many different head coaches. They were surveying the landscape, whether it was in
family or outside the family, Josh Shirts being outside the family, of course. But Josh Shirts
was the only one in that article mentioned by name that the orange were really going after. In fact,
even though it was reported that St. Louis and Josh Shirts had an extension in place,
the orange were still pursuing him. Most recently, after St. Louis beat Georgia in their first round
NCAA tournament matchup on Thursday. But nevertheless, Josh Shirts did not get the job. But this
was another very interesting part from Matt Norlander. I'm going to show it on the screen in just a
moment regarding the debate amongst the powerful Syracuse people about whether or not the orange
should stay in the family or they should go outside the family for their next tech coach. I'm
going to put it up right now on the screen. If you're watching on YouTube, don't worry. I'll read
it for you all if you're just listening on whatever platform you decide to use. McNamara winning
outcomes after weeks of debate amongst big money players at Syracuse who were split over whether
or not to break from the Syracuse family slash Jim Bayheim coaching treat. McNamara is of course
a doored accuse, but some influential supporters of the program fell adamant that Syracuse needed to
go in a new direction. Others favor keeping it in the family for at least one more try. McNamara
was the obvious choice in that record. That I do agree with that. If you were going to keep it within
the family, there was really only one credible option out there. And that was Jerry McNamara. He
is by far in a way, a better candidate than Mike Hopkins or Jason Hard or you want to try
Carmelo Anthony or Eric Devendorf. Give me Jerry McNamara over any of the other possible
in family hires for Syracuse basketball. My thoughts on this. Look, obviously Jerry McNamara became
the head coach of Syracuse basketball. So the group of people that wanted to stay within the family
as the next head coach, one out. They won out. And naturally, there's going to be disagreement.
I think that is healthy to have disagreement when you're making a decision of this magnitude. You
don't want literally every single person involved in the decision making to be in lockstep with
who it should be. Because if you all agree on one person before you obviously get to the ending,
then there's no discussion about any other possible candidate. That's classic group think
right there. And you don't want that when you're making this type of decision. So it's good that
they were having these discussions. And look, we spent a week, actually more than a week. We spent
weeks, maybe even months, debating on this show whether or not it was a good idea or a bad idea for
Syracuse to stay within the family or to go outside the family for their next head coach. And
where I settled on was if you have two equal candidates, you stay within the family,
because there are obvious upsides to staying within the family. But you don't want to sacrifice
hiring a better coach just because you wanted to stay within the family. Now for what it's worth,
a Josh shirts, apparently he was the runner up right according to Matt Norland or he was
certainly in the running for the job. He's proven more than Jerry McNamara as a head coach. And
that is no disrespect to Jerry. And that's not me and poo pooing the move to go get Jerry McNamara
as the next head coach. But Josh shirts is proven more. However, Jerry Stock, it obviously improved over
the last week or so, leading Sienna to the tournament, taking Duke to the wire in the first round of
the tournament. And I just wanted to work just like you all. So I'm not going to cry over it.
That ultimately Josh shirts decided to stay with St. Louis and that they had to go with Jerry McNamara
instead or I really shouldn't say had to go with Jerry McNamara. I should say that they went with
Jerry McNamara as the next head coach. Period. I think we can all just move on from it and hope
that it works for Syracuse with Jerry McNamara. Now resources. Obviously this is very, very important
to giving Jerry McNamara the best chance of succeeding. They need significant resources. This is a
new era. This is NIL. This is transfer portal. This is revenue sharing. You need money to win.
Period. Now ESPN's Pete Dammell and Jeff Borsella reported, we talked about this yesterday
and the reaction show that Syracuse is reportedly committed to spending in the top third of the ACC
in NIL. Now we have a projected number. According to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, quote,
Syracuse is hopeful it can raise more than $9 million total in NIL budgeting for the 2026-27
season, with at least 4.5 million of that coming from revenue sharing. For context, it was reported
out there that last year Syracuse spent roughly $8 million on their roster, which, according to John
Wildhack, you kind of have to put all the pieces together, was upper half of the ACC. Now there is
a difference between being top third and upper half. Obviously, they're within the same half. They're
both upper half, but top third means top six. Upper half means top nine. That's a three-spot difference
and who knows how big of a gap that is, but it could be a fairly significant gap, depending on how
the other teams in the ACC decide to spend. My thoughts on this, maybe it's because I'm someone who
likes nice, round, clean numbers. I hear 9 million. I'm like, oh, that's cool, but why can't you go
to 10 million? Why can't you spend 10 million dollars? So maybe it's just me and being a victim of,
hey, I like, I like nice, round, clean numbers, right? Maybe some of you are like that as well,
but here's the reality. I am hoping that Syracuse can bump up from $9 million. At least get to 10
million dollars in spending for next year's roster. And obviously, I know that just because you
spend a ton of money doesn't mean that you're going to win more games. You do need to spend in
order to win, but there does come a point in time where it may not really matter. I mean, I'm a
New York Metz fan after all, and they spend a bunch of money every single year to mixed results
in MLB. That's MLB. So let's use a college basketball example. Kentucky reportedly spent
upwards of $20 million on this year's team. Where did that get them? A seven seat in the NCAA
tournament and knocked out in blowout fashion, Iowa State in the round of 32. And that was
Kentucky spending $20 million, which was by far and away, I think most in all of college basketball.
There's a reason why Mark Pope had coach there is now on the hot seat because of all the money
and all the resources they put in there. And they still didn't get very far. Round of 32 there
is just not simply good enough. Point is though, you do need significant resources if you want to
compete on a national level. And think about what an extra million can do going from $9 million
to $10 million. You can do it for three things. It can be used as extra money to pay for a big star
in the transport. Or maybe there's someone you want in the portal really badly. And the going
rate for him is two and a half million dollars. But you only have two million dollars to spend.
Now imagine if you get an extra million, well, guess what? Now you can meet the number. Perhaps
even exceed the number if need be. It can be used to get another starter in the portal. A million
dollars for a starter. I think you can manage. It could also be used to get multiple high quality
role players to fill out the rest of your team to actually have a bench going into the season.
Bottom line, if you are able to raise an extra million, go from $9 million to $10 million,
I think it would put Syracuse in much better position to build a better team. So that Jerry
McNamara has all the resources in the world to be able to succeed right away for Syracuse.
The question is now, how can they do that? How can they raise money? There's a couple of ways
they can decide to bump up how much they want to spend in the rev share portion. The article said
from Matt Norlander, it was $4.5 million. Maybe they decide to go more than $4.5 million. And for what
it's worth guys, there is a cap for how much you can spend for an entire athletic program.
It's over $20 million. So you're allocating $4.5 million to basketball. You could decide to allocate
more, but that would require also taking away less from other programs. That's their decision
at the end of the day though. They could try to raise more money in NIL, or they could do a little
bit of both. Maybe they do take a little bit more rev share, but also are able to increase the NIL
donations and all that stuff as well. So overall, a top third in the ACC sounds pretty good.
$9 million sounds pretty good, but I don't know about you, but here's where I'm at. I feel like
Syracuse can do better than that. I feel like you can do more, especially because you need this
higher to work. This is Jerry McNamara, where you're talking about here. You hired him for a reason
to be the next side coach of Syracuse basketball. You need to give him all the resources and all
the support in the world so that he has the best opportunity to succeed for Syracuse basketball
in the near term and in the long term. All right. Now, coming up here, unlocked on Syracuse.

below to claim your free month. Jackson Holzer locked on Syracuse Jerry McNamara set to become the
next tech coach of Syracuse basketball. Yesterday, I posted on social media both on Twitter
at L.O. underscore Syracuse and on Facebook locked on Syracuse. You can find myself there
pros and cons of Jerry McNamara becoming the next tech coach of Syracuse basketball. I'm
going to show it on the screen right now. I'm going to read it to you and then we will go point
by point. Okay. So the pros of hiring Jerry McNamara. It's got prior division one head coach
experience. He lets the end of the tournament this season Gavin Doddy is certainly someone who
we really like who they can get in the portal loyalty to Syracuse. The big funders very likely
wanted him. There are cons as well. He's got solid but limited head coach experience and he is
very difficult to replace if it doesn't work. AKA if it doesn't work, it is very hard to fire
Jerry McNamara. We will get to that in just a moment here on this show. But let's start with the
pros. Okay. Pro number one is that prior head coach experience. I think most of us, including
myself, wanted the next head coach of Syracuse to have prior head coach experience. As intriguing
as some of the assistant head coaches that are out there like a Luke Murray at Yukon or same
with Kamani Yungus also at Yukon, they just don't have head coaching experience. They don't have it
and they can be hot shot assistants and hey, assistants can work. Jay Lucas was pretty good in
year one with Miami coming over from Duke. But being a head coach is entirely different than being
an assistant head coach. And for what it's worth most of these head coach candidates,
they have prior assistant coach experience working under some of the best head coaches in the business.
Okay. So yeah, I mean, Kamani Yung and Luke Murray, they work under Dan Hurley and they're successful at
Yukon. That's great. But there are so many coaches who fit that profile as well at the end of the day.
I wanted someone that had prior head coach experience and many of you felt that way as well. He was
at Ciena for a couple of seasons. More on that in just a moment. I don't care that Ciena is a
mid-major program because as I've already been saying, there are plenty of coaches out there
that started as head coaches at mid-major programs. It is a very, very popular path for high-major
coaches to take. You can look in the ACC, for example, Pat Kelsey was at the College of Charleston
before getting the Louisville job. That's just one for you all ladies and gentlemen.
Number two, he led Ciena to the tournament. Obviously, this matters because
what is implied with prior head coach experience is prior good head coaching experience. In this past
season, he led Ciena to the tournament for the first time since 2010. That was actually with
Fran McCaffery. It was also Ciena's first 20-win season since 2020. And their best conference win
percentage since 2021. That is quality head coach experience.
Number three, Gavin Dodie. Dodie is a six-foot-five sophomore guard at Ciena. Last year, he
averaged 18 points per game and seven rebounds per game. His efficiency numbers from his freshman
year to his sophomore year went up across the board. He stored 21 points in Ciena's loss in the
NCAA tournament against Duke. Get used to hearing his name. His name is Gavin Dodie, assuming he
enters the transfer portal. And I think that it's a fair bet that he enters the portal. I don't have
insight on it, but connect the dots here. He was successful at Ciena. It's Ciena. He can get more
money at Syracuse. The enters the portal, I think Syracuse is likely the favorite to be able to land
him and he would be a very good addition to the roster for next season and assuming all goes
according to plan. He would also be on the roster for a senior season because he's got multiple years
of eligibility. So that is a plus of hiring Jerry McNamara. It puts you in great shape to land
Gavin Dodie in the transfer portal. Next, he's got the loyalty to Syracuse. This is Jerry McNamara
here. Best case scenario, Jerry McNamara could become what Jim Bayheim was for Syracuse for four
decades. He is currently 42 years of age that is still relatively young, maybe not four decades,
perhaps it's three decades of all goes according to plan for Jerry McNamara. If all goes well for
Jerry McNamara, it is inevitable that he will come across other opportunities while he is the head
coach of Syracuse basketball after all. When Jim Bayheim was here for all these years,
there are many different points during his head coaching tenure that he could have left Syracuse
for another opportunity if he decided to leave Syracuse if he wanted to leave Syracuse. But he never
did want to leave Syracuse because he was loyal to the orange. He was a player there, he was an
assistant there, became the head coach, loves the program, never ever left. And so there is a
big boom factor when you hire Jerry McNamara. If it goes according to plan, this could be our long
term head coach. This could be our coach when a big job opens up, maybe Bill self decides to return
to Kansas for another season. But in two years, maybe Bill self says I'm done with Kansas, I'm done
coaching. All of a sudden their job is open, Jerry McNamara is killing it at Syracuse, that's too bad
that Jerry McNamara is an alum and doesn't want to leave the school. That's the upside of this,
whereas if you went with someone else with no connection to the program, which by the way,
I would have been fine with in the event that that coach does well and a better opportunity comes
along, they could leave, they could leave or they would have a much more likely chance of leaving.
It's not to say it's impossible that Jerry McNamara would ever leave Syracuse, but it's more likely
than not, he would never leave assuming all goes according to plan. And finally, the big funders
very likely wanted him, I can't confirm this. This is literally just a theory that I have, but I think
Jerry McNamara out of all the potential candidates that are out there, he very likely had the most
financial backing. And I'm not sitting here saying that it means people would have withheld donations
or they would have made different decisions, otherwise if Jerry McNamara ultimately wasn't the
head coach, but here's the reality. If Jerry McNamara had the most financial backing, then they had
no choice but to hire him. You had to hire him. If, for example, again, hypothetical, if Jerry McNamara
can get you nine million, but you want Josh shirts, but you can only get seven and a half million
for Josh shirts, you got to go GMAC, you got to get the money because you need the money in order to
build the roster. So it's very likely that the big funders at the end of the day, they want to Jerry
McNamara, it's not to say that I necessarily trust the big funders, it's more like, look, if that's who
they were going to pay for, that's who they're going to pay for, if that's who they're going to give
the resources to, that's who they're going to give the resources to. So that's a big pro in hiring
Jerry McNamara versus anyone else. The cons are also there. We can go over them briefly. He's got
solid but limited head coach experience. Jerry McNamara was the head coach at Siena for two seasons.
If we compare him to other potential candidates that were out there for Syracuse to get,
he's actually got the least amount of experience aside from the coaches who have no prior
head coach experience. Josh shirts, five years of head coach experience. Brian Hodgson,
who went to Providence, we'll talk about him later, three years, Tony Stin, three years,
Shaheen Holloway, eight years, Jared Calhoun, nine years. This isn't eight towards Jerry McNamara.
I am simply pointing out the facts that when you compare him to some of the other candidates
that were out there, GMAC is not as experienced as some of those other coaches.
And finally, it's very difficult to replace Jerry McNamara. And I should have worded it better
in that post. What I meant is, because I really didn't want to say it, is that it is harder to
fire Jerry McNamara. This is of course assuming the worst case scenario, which like we're all Syracuse
fans here. If you're not a Syracuse fan, hi, welcome. This is a Syracuse page where Syracuse
fans here. I'm a Syracuse alum here. I want this higher to work. You want this higher to work.
We all want this higher to work. We don't want to envision a scenario where it does not work.
Okay. But think about how hard it was for Syracuse to let go of Adrian Entry.
I want you to multiply it by 50, at least with Jerry McNamara. Imagine Syracuse having to fire
Jerry McNamara. Imagine that. We don't want to imagine that. But it's the worst case scenario.
My point in all this is that when these programs, because there are examples I'm about to give you,
when these programs hire former legends, they tend to get a much bigger leash than they normally
would. Here are some examples. Georgetown with Patrick Ewing. He got six years as the head coach
there. He had one miracle tournament appearance in 2021 by winning the biggest as an under 500
team at the time, and they got bounced right away in the NCAA tournament.
If his name was Patrick Smith, that guy's gone in three years maximum. They would have fired him
very quickly, but it's Patrick Ewing. He's a legend. He didn't want it. NC State Sydney low.
He got five years. No tournament appearances. A 524 win percentage. You're telling me if his name
was Sydney Bryant, that he would have gotten five years. And NC State, I think not. How about
North Carolina with Hubert Davis? He's been there for five years. He is underachieved for the most
part as the head coach at North Carolina. And I can speak for pretty much any ACC team when I tell
you, I hope they keep him. I hope North Carolina keeps Hubert Davis. Yeah, keep going with him. He
is underachieved for five years. You think that by year six, he's finally going to figure it out.
North Carolina is still at the time of this recording, trying to decide whether or not they should
keep Hubert Davis or they should let go of Hubert Davis. And how should they go about it?
If this was anyone else that was not in the North Carolina family, he would be fired immediately.
They probably don't let him on the plane after the loss to VCU.
But it's Hubert Davis. He was really good at North Carolina when he played there, especially as
final season over there. And they're giving him five, they've already given him five years,
and he is underachieved for the most part.
Jawan Howard at Michigan, he got five years. One good season. That was in 2021. It took an eight
and 24 season and a year five for Michigan to finally come to their senses that Jawan Howard
is not a good coach. And that you should probably go in a different direction, which they did.
They went with Dusty May from FAU and it's worked out quite well. But they wasted five years
trying to prove themselves right about Jawan Howard. So when you look at the totality of everything,
overall, there are more pros than cons in my opinion with Jerry McNamara. I am glad the financial
support is there, although they could use more certainly. However, because he is a legend,
Jerry McNamara is a Syracuse legend. There is a big upside with him. He could be the head coach
for three plus decades and be amazing for Syracuse. But there's also a big risk to it.
It's very, very hard to fire Jerry McNamara. They may give him a longer leash than any of the other
potential candidates that were out there just because he is Jerry McNamara. Comment in your thoughts

Jackson holes are locked on Syracuse. There was a story that was reported by CBS Sports's John
Rothstein on Monday morning March 23rd that I find absolutely hilarious and I think if you saw
the news as well, you found it funny as well. John Rothstein reported that Syracuse will play
Providence in a neutral site game next season. The game will take place at TD Garden in Boston. No
date has been announced nor has this necessarily been confirmed by Syracuse or Providence. So
it's not official, but it is coming from John Rothstein and John Rothstein is one of the best
insiders in the business. So I'll take his word for it. I think that this is absolutely hilarious.
This is an epic troll in my opinion and I don't know about you, but I am also very excited for
potential Syracuse and Providence matchup. If you're not up to speed as to why this is amusing or
why this sounds like a troll job, let me bring you up to speed on it. Okay, most of you probably are.
Okay, but if you're not here, it is Providence hired Brian Hodgson to be its next tech coach.
It was the same day as Syracuse hiring Jerry McNamara was announced a little bit before that.
Hodgson was rumored to be one of the candidates for the Syracuse job. However,
there were multiple reports out there that suggested that Hodgson turned Syracuse down and Syracuse
since said we didn't offer the job and nobody turned us down. So it's a I don't know. I honestly
I have moved on from it. Hodgson's camp saying one thing Syracuse is saying another thing.
Who should we believe? The answer is probably a little bit in the middle as to what really happened,
but it doesn't matter. At the end of the day, Syracuse says Jerry McNamara has the next tech coach.
Brian Hodgson is over at Providence. And we have moved on from it. I have moved on from it.
You've moved on from it. Brian Hodgson is not the Syracuse basketball head coach.
Jerry McNamara is our head coach. That doesn't mean we have for Don.
We haven't forgotten. And I just hope that in this matchup Syracuse against Providence,
that Jerry McNamara in the orange, they can stick it to Brian Hodgson. They can stick it to him.
I am hoping that they can stick it to his agent because you know it was his agent that was leaking
that Brian Hodgson turned down Syracuse. Who else would it possibly be? So I hope they can stick it
to him or her or the agency, whatever the case may be. And finally, I really hope they can just
stick it to Jeff Goodman. I really, really do. Yeah. I hope they do.
Just don't lose Syracuse. Just don't lose in this matchup. Folks, what are your thoughts on it?
