The actor Richard Armitage refuses to be pigeon-holed. He first made a national impact as the mill owner John Thornton in the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South. Audiences around the world know him as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson.
