Richard Newton, News Nation, On Iran Rescue Mission Over the Weekend | 4-6-26
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We are scheduled to be joined by Lieutenant General Richard Newton.
He is a news nation contributor.
He also spent time at Whiteman Air Force Base in his career.
So he knows the Kansas City area very well.
He knows, of course, what goes on here.
I'm very, very well.
And we look forward to getting him on the show because today, the president of the United
States is going to be joined by the military side by side and do a press conference at
12 o'clock.
So that'll be in the middle of the event show.
We will carry it right here on KCMO talk radio.
That way you hear the entire press conference start to finish.
As soon as the president does step to the podium, we'll carry that in now less than three
hours here on KCMO.
So Keatsman's coming up at 10, we'll get the bench show on the air at 11 and then sometime
in that noon hour, the president will give an update on Iran.
Now this morning, Reuters had the report that a cease fire is under consideration from
the White House.
And that has since been reported by other outlets as well.
Pakistan apparently reportedly is the intermediary right now between the United States and Iran
as there's a framework of a planned and what is now a six week old conflict and try to reopen
the street of Hormuz.
And that's what's driving up obviously oil prices all over the world.
The president obviously wants to get that done sooner rather than later.
Now there have been new reports as well this morning about a potential 45 day cease fire.
A White House official was asked about that this morning and said that is one of many ideas
being discussed and that the president has not signed off on it yet.
Iran has also just rejected requests for a potential cease fire to temporarily reopen
up the street.
Now what's happening this morning in the markets on this news?
I think everyone's in kind of this wait and see approach.
The markets haven't really done anything.
Dows off a fraction, S&P's up a fraction and the NASDAQ is up a fraction as well.
I mean, everything's basically just even as of this morning.
So we're just sitting here.
We're waiting to see what exactly happens today.
I think that's also what the markets are doing right now.
And I'm not saying the president should be really worried about the markets.
I'm just saying, you know, the markets are obviously a part of the equation.
You don't make a generational decision because the Dow might go up 2%.
You just don't do it.
But obviously it seems like everyone's waiting to see what happens coming up at noon central
time.
And then also reacting to this incredible rescue mission that took place in Iran, where
an airman in one of the most dangerous rescue missions in American history was recovered
from the mountains of Iran as Iran is obviously looking for this guy, which would be a tremendous
bargaining chip for them.
They would have known how to use him to their advantage, but we got there first.
Richard Newton is here on KCMO.
He's a news nation contributor.
He is a lieutenant general and he has somebody knows Missouri well from his time at Whiteman.
Lieutenant General Newton, thank you for joining us on KCMO first.
This rescue mission over the weekend in Iran, you've read the reports, you've seen
what happened.
What's the most amazing part of this to you?
Well, the fact is, is that in good morning, Pete, good to be with you again.
This was a remarkable daring raid and the most amazing thing is this airman and his
front seat on that 15 strike eagle is back in the safe and sound in American hands, not
only jubilation for those air crew members in our military, but their families.
And it also speaks to the fact that America will not leave anyone behind the value of American
life that we have as a nation.
It also sends a message to the Iranians, our adversaries, that we will go to extensively
to find and bring home just one American.
As demonstrated early Sunday morning, it shows not only the capability, but the courage
and frankly, the United States as we will continue to pursue a successful conclusion to this
campaign.
So as you've read the reports on how this mission went down and some of the details that
are starting to be reported, whether it's, you know, the Wall Street Journal, New York
Times, I'll have some good reporting on this over the last 12 to 18 hours or so.
Is there a part of the reporting where you said to yourself, wow, like where the average
person, like the guy like me or the listener right now, who obviously does not have a background
in this stuff and did not serve?
Is there a part of this mission in particular that really stood out to you?
Well, first training, I had initial survival of Asian resistance to escape training.
And then on an annual basis, when I was a combat aviator, would go through on a recurring
basis as training.
And I guarantee you the men and women in the five o'clock night bombing there, white
men air force base nearby, goes through this training as well.
So training kicked in, extraordinarily effective for these two airmen in this case.
And certainly for the second airmen that had to evade for up to 36 to 40 hours.
That's remarkable.
So let's go back to training.
But then also let's look at the synchronization, the courage, the planning of the combat
search and rescue team that consisted of air force pair rescue, combat search and rescue
forces that included special operations, special mission units, seals and delta and so
forth, as well as the central intelligence agency, providing what's been reported in
the media with regard to some deception tactics, but also providing exquisite intelligence.
And then you've got a coalition part of these railings who are also synchronized with
this, providing your own intelligence, but also air cover in addition to air force and
navy top cover to get this airman home.
All that occurring under the leadership of Admiral Brad Cooper, the Commander of U.S.
Central Command.
That just doesn't happen overnight, but really it starts with training all the way through
exquisite synchronization and integration, but also communication.
And really the relentless pursuit that we're not going to leave anybody behind, Pete.
And so that's a message for many women in uniform, for our coalition partners and our
allies, but absolutely for against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Regiment on itself.
All right.
Lieutenant General Richard Newton is here on KCMO.
He's a news nation contributor.
He has also been at white men air force base.
So today, the president of the United States will address the nation alongside the military.
What do you think the strategy is going to be and should be today for the Commander in
Chief?
First off, the president is going to outline what we just briefly talked about with regard
to the remarkable search and rescue and recovery of this airman and the ex filtration that
took place.
Secondly, the message to the Iranian people is that the United States is going to stay
in this fight.
Israel has stated, and I would support this, that we're trying to create the conditions
for the collapse of the regime, and therefore allow for the Iranian people to reclaim their
country.
But really, that will be a message to, I'm sure he'll be messaging the Iranian people,
but regard to also we're trying to destroy the regime's ballistic missile and drone capabilities
as well as our defense industrial base, their nuclear weapons, and so forth, as well as
going after the proxies that threaten American interests, but also Israeli interests, and
by the way, Gulf air nations as well.
So that's what he'll do.
He'll also, really, the ultimatum here is Iran, two things.
Stop retaliating.
As I mentioned, with those blissing missiles and those drones and those upper capabilities
and stop threatening, global commerce and shipping up in the street of Hamuz.
The United States is going to endure it as we follow through with clearing up the straight
with increased pace of securing maritime dominance, will maintain air superiority, and continue
to do so.
And I believe the President will underscore the fact he's not going to put the foot off the
gas towards the United States military until this campaign is drawn to a successful conclusion
really to meet those Israeli objectives, United States objectives, as well as, as I mentioned
providing for the Iranian people at some point to reclaim their country.
Okay, so how, how, last thing then, how does that work, Richard, from the standpoint of
if we're talking about a ceasefire leading to, you know, a deal between the US, Israel,
any Iran, but then we also are doing this in parts of the people of Iran can reclaim
their country.
Can you do both of those things?
Is that possible?
I think you're going to see all elements of US national power involved here.
We've already seen that from the military standpoint, obviously, and we're so weak
away from achieving those military objectives that I just highlighted briefly, Pete, but
there's also diplomatic efforts going on.
And that's what we're seeing behind the scenes.
You've got mediator nations such as Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and so forth, and others trying
to help the United States and Iran come to perhaps a maybe a ceasefire, some type of
settlement, but we are rules apart in terms of the Iranian regime's position and certainly
the United States and Israel at this point.
I do not anticipate a diplomatic breakthrough at all.
I would hope for one, by the way, but hope is not necessarily an effective strategy here.
So what I would have our listeners underscore or underscore to them, all elements of US national
security are involved here, the military piece, the diplomatic piece, but also the economic
finance piece.
We've got to get that street opened up so they'd run no longer threatens, global shipping,
global commerce through the street because that's having a worldwide economic impact.
So that's what the President is going to endeavor to do here.
But we're still miles apart from the diplomatic solution should.
We get to the point where Iran is convinced that they have no other option than to come
to a successful collusion conclusion based on really the strong position the United States
and Israel.
So be it, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.
There you go.
All right.
Lieutenant General Richard Newton News Nation contributor on KCMO, I thank you so much
for being here.
