A high-profile committee hearing at the Texas Capitol proceeded Monday without its main attraction: Robert Roberson, a man on death row whose execution was delayed last week after a bipartisan group of lawmakers issued a subpoena compelling his testimony. In other news, Federal labor regulators said Monday that the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center has agreed to pay $900,000 to resolve complaints that the school systemically discriminated against 6,100 Black applicants over a two-year period; Early voting for the Nov. 5 election began yesterday and ends Friday, Nov. 1. In Texas, all registered voters can cast a ballot in person during the early voting period.
