Roger Vieira on Factory Racing, Winning Cerro Abajo & Chasing a World Cup Podium
About this episode
The Ride Companion is made possible by:
Roger Vieira is back on The Ride Companion during the best season of his life...
In this episode, Roger explains how Bernard Kerr's injury ultimately opened the door for him at Pivot, what life inside a factory downhill team is really like and whether factory support has actually made him faster or, simply given him the opportunity to show the speed he already had.
Roger breaks down his first proper factory supported off-season, testing with FOX in California, riding in Queenstown, changing his approach to training and working with Bernard Kerr to improve some surprisingly specific weaknesses in his riding. We also get deep into the mental side of World Cup downhill racing. Roger explains the 'red zone vs blue zone' approach he's using with his mental coach, why World Cup qualifying creates so much pressure and what goes through his head in the seconds before leaving the start gate. Roger also explains why urban downhill brings out a completely different mentality in him, why he loves the Red Bull Cero Abajo series so much and the intricasies of downhill street racing.
Once again, Roger delivers with great insights. We hope you enjoy the episode.

Verbo, book now of occasion rental loved by guests. Shoot is shot, come on. Do you like the elevator piece? Do something that says like, can you make it so it's like really inspirational? Yeah, we can put music, because dog can put music to it to make this. I think throughout all my life, I'll be 40 when this potentially opportunity happens.
I just need a chance and no one's ever taken a chance on me. So just the bike, the kit, the mechanic, a hefty, hefty wage. Alright. That is nice. We're making today's guest work for his spot away. Clap yourself in. The one and only, Roger Villera, ladies and gentlemen. Man. We're right in the HQ here, aren't we? I'm not thought about it, not the echo. It's not going to show up, but like all of a sudden it's going to pop off. Yeah, really, aren't we? Big studio. Yeah, big building. Insane place. Like the dream. The dream garage, if you can call it a garage. Yeah, it's a bit J Lano of Wales, isn't it? Well, J Lano, it is.
It is. And you've sort of based, would you say the best season of your life out of this? Is this the base? Yeah, that's the base. But yeah, yeah, like that's right words like best season off my life. And yeah, this place is insane. Like everything that you dream as a kid, like it's in here. Like there's motorbikes, motorcross bikes, all kinds of bikes. And sick cars as well. So it's pretty cool. That's pretty cool. God, Jim as well here. And a Jim guy over there. Yeah, probably. Every Jim. Like everything you've mentioned is like leisure. The only bit of work is behind the cameras. Two catabels in the car. Yeah, the perfect, yeah, the perfect base really isn't it? Like I came here, I come here like every week pretty much. Stay here for two or three days. You can like get your workout done. Derby is like literally 10 minutes from here. Go up there, do laps. And yeah, so an example will be today.
You've got up the bike box closed, right? Yeah, yeah. Like luckily Derby are done. Like letters, like right during the week as well. A little big head just shuttles because he's injured. He just shuttles on the quad on a car we caught. So like so quick in two hours, we can do like 10 laps. It's really practical and easy. Also, it's like actually where else could you actually do this in the UK? Thinking about it, training wise. Yeah, no. Yeah, I feel like we've been dropped right in the center of the epicenter of mountain biking. Yeah, like how could you be a downhill? Yeah. I feel like I'm a downhill mountain bikeer elsewhere. I mean, you were. Yeah, yeah. Like it's hard. Like I said, like even though I was, like I was always coming here, like I will not that often. But I was always having to come here. The aim would have been to ride, you know, because there is no place well swear to ride in UK. You either come here or you go bike park Wales and like got revolution bike park.
And that's pretty much it, I think. But yeah, I'd say Derby's like the best all round, like place to come. And while having days here, so close to it, it makes it like it makes it total sense. Talk a bit about today, because I think it's super interesting because there's, you know, I thought you'd been here for a few days. I'll be honest, I thought you lived here, but you don't. You're still in the motherland and Darby's here. So what's today look like? So you've driven here from Darby. Yeah. Yeah. Today. Yeah, three hour drive in the morning. Yeah. I got here. And then yeah, we went to the bike park, me and Jen and VK. And yeah, probably like, like, eight, ten laps in the bike parking like two hours. And then now here, do your podcast. So unpack it a bit, because I think it's interesting. Why ten laps in the bike park today? You've got Le J coming up. This might be our after Le J, but we've got Le J coming up. So what's the focus today of going and doing those laps? What are you doing?
Yeah. So like, I came last week as well, and I did like two days last week. And I have a new part on my forks that I'm trying to like, yeah, use to it and test it. So I did about, yeah, like, just like, like trying different setups and different things on the forks last week. And then these week, I was like, today I was just like, just like riding more like, just like for fun really. Not really thinking much about like the bike or anything, just like trying to ride fast. We felt like thinking about your setup. And then like, we're going to Le J and like Thursday. So like, we have like Friday and Saturday to ride. And then I'll have my mechanic there. So like, I'll be able to like do more testing like in limers, in limers, anywhere we were going to be riding. Which it's a lot more like I word kept track. So the testing would be a lot more like, you know, like transferable to light to the tracks there.
And then I also have a mechanic that will help me like find it to change anything inside. And it'll be just easier. So, okay. Yeah. When you're when you're riding here, what percent of a race run are you riding at? Because I always find like when someone like you says fast, I don't quite know what exactly means. Like, yeah, it depends like, it depends of the day. Like sometimes I like, I bring my GoPro and then like the aim is like, get faster each lap. Like until like, so I do a lap. And it's like, oh, these lap was fast. I think I can get it will be nice to get to this, to this, to this point, you know. Like I did it like before we went to South Korea. I kind of did like my own like, like kind of race run. So I knew the track. So I was like, oh, I got six laps. So I, I'm going to do three laps and then I'm going to do Q1, Q2 and finals. And like, I want to, my Q1 and Q2 times to be like, pretty close. So like, you know, like, so you hopefully go straight through Q1.
So like, that's why I did. So I did like three laps, like kind of learned, I already knew the track. So I kind of like, relearned the track where to go like speed wise and everything. And then, yeah, like did Q1. I was like, I think two minutes dad did Q2. I was two minutes dad again, but that was like a bit quicker on the mini seconds. And then on the last one, I managed to go like 259, which was like the final run. So like, that was, that was like, that was, but like, that was the goal. So you go and proper fast. Like, that's like really, really fast. But like today, I was like going really fast, but like I was going really, really fast, it's scary fast in sections. But then, you know, like the bits where you don't have anything, I was like cruising pace. So like, my time would be like quite bad, but like where it was like really intense and really tacky. I was like, it's really almost like, I really, really pain. But then like on the chill bets, bike park bets, I wasn't like really like a race run pushing.
I was like more like, you know, cruising. Yeah, mate. It's fascinating. And living so close to a bike park like that. So you know your times and every run or not really, but like there's a few tracks where I like, yeah. But like, it's so hard here because like the conditions change all the time. Yeah. So like normally is always wet. Like this past like month is being like super dry and super, super dusty. So like the tracks, like feel everything feels just so much faster. But like even like last week when I came, even though it was super dry, they had rained at the night before. And that's it. It was like totally different already. Like all the bets were like there was not Shaily rock, Shaily rock. It was like grippy, but then on the Shaily rocks was all like super sketchy and like slippery. So yeah, it's tricky to like, you know, like balance all the conditions because it's always different here. What's you go to training lab? Oh, like I love like firing both into like El Heepo.
That's what I was doing today into how to scout her. Yeah, those like those are kind of like my go to like laps. They are short, but like they are like really tech in rough and not like this is such a unique sport. Yeah. In a way, I guess you get it from like a Nürburgring or from a motorsport racetrack. But where you can have the fastest in the sport, put in a time and then you on a weekend can organize you in five of your mates. You can get your GoPro out and you can work out how you fare. I think it's like pretty cool in that respect because I think it's more eye opening. Obviously it's eye opening in motorsports, but I think it's more eye opening in mountain biking personally. That's true. It's a public place. Same track, basically running the same bikes. All right, yours are like tuned to within an inch of exactly what you need. Yeah, basically. How cool is it to like just know what I love that stuff.
I think that almost bike parks could make more of that like. Yeah, I feel like it's almost needs like a leaderboard, like a lively. It's just like, somehow, I don't know how that goes. If the track doesn't change, obviously, the trail is the problem. Yeah, it changes so much. Like, it's like like you could get like, let's say our pro goals there. There's like a two minutes in like a like a, like a bit of a different condition. And then someone like fast rider goals and like does like faster time. The pro guy wouldn't be like probably happy. I wouldn't care. But like some people would like. Yeah, I know he'd be like someone else. Be quite hard though over a two minute track. I think he can't hide. I think it'd be quite hard. But yeah, no, it's cool. It's really cool. And it's, yeah, it's sick. I suppose there's stuff like up top. Wait out, more out in the open, less protected like the wind on a bad day. Makes such a difference. Yeah, that's true. It's crazy as well with this place.
He's like, you like, no, the bottom, the tracks at the bottom not so much. But like the ones at the top, you know how like they have like long, like straights and stuff. Like depending like if it's cold, like you'd notice the bike is so much slower, like it, like it drugs so much. And like it's, it's crazy. Like the rolling resistance on this place, it changes like, yeah, it changes so much. Just no wind, nothing, just like the conditions. If it's a bit too cold or it's a bit soggy, they'll like the ground. I always think it changes just in front of me. You know, like I've got fast mates going off ahead. And I feel like this conditions change and slow me down. Don't know if you know what I mean. I mean, I know exactly. It's like sludge, isn't it? No, I mean, even in the times I've been here in between them. Crazy different. Yeah, it's good. I think it just shows like how well we like also know the bike park is like we, like I noticed straight away. Like I knew what you'd say was like rolling super fast.
Like I was like, I was not pointing any efforts into it. And the bike was like going like super quick. And then some days you like giving everything you have. And the bike is like not really like like moving, you know. Yeah, which is quite, quite cool. Like you have like, even though it's like the same tracks where you have like, you come like in a different day. It could be like totally different like experience that you'll get, you know, which is really cool. Usually the best to ride it without the public would you say? Or does it matter? Like it doesn't matter, but like it's just like what we did today is just so quick. Yeah. Like, like like two hours I did the same amount of laps. We would, I would done like a whole day in the like in the park, you know, like, like I tend to four, like you probably can get like 10, 10, 12 laps in the, with when the park is open, which is like great. But then because today we were like literally like up and down, up and down in the quad. Like I would get down, because it would be there waiting for me already. Lower the bike. Lower the bike.
Straight back up. So like you, you, you just so much more efficient. And yeah, you get, yeah, if we wanted to do even more, you could do even more and no. Yeah. But yeah, it's just super efficient. So good. And it's your, sorry, go on. No, please. Your first full season on pivot factor racing. I wanted to ask you what the off season looked like. And how, how is it different to a previous off season when you are a, a privateer? Yeah, I think last time we talked, I was like, I was, I just like told you guys there was like quitting my job. Yeah. And then like, you got like the ride and everything. And I was going like to California, Queenstown, all this, this sick trips. And like that, that's what, like that's what happened. So like, started with like, like a waking calli testing with folks. And then like only there we probably like did like, like 50 laps, just like, like three, four days that we rode there.
Okay. And that was already like a lot laps for a lot of life, like for my off season. And then we went to Queenstown for two weeks. And then we've probably done another like 100 hundred, like 100 laps there, you know. You're already on the Corona fake and like all these cool places and obviously I've never been to calli. Never been to to Queenstown as well. So it was like really cool to like get to know these places right there. And like yet have a proper off season. And we went to like the first round as well. A one the super cross, which is how insane. Like it was just like a dream trip, really. And yeah, so like that's how it started. And like probably like by the end of Queenstown, I already had done like more laps day. I ever have done in my life in an off season before. And yeah, like leaving bike and breathing bike like pretty much like it's like. I guess as well, you're like, is it easier to get sort of comfortable on a bike because you're not in the race season? Because I guess you hopped into pivot factor racing in the race season.
You're trying to get up to speed. Yeah. Because then you've got time to just float around and have fun on it. Yeah, yeah, exactly like I managed to like obviously last year I was riding on a small bike. I jumped to the median these year. So I've got time to like get used to that now. Obviously like tried loads of different settings on the on the bike during the off season. So what worked, what didn't work. And everything just helps. And like every day you learn the bike, you're just feeling more comfortable, more comfortable winning. And like you feel more asked one as you you and the bike like as like as a one, you know. And yeah, like all that. Like it helps like technically like you know, but it also helps so much here. Yeah, because you know like that you did everything you could to be at your best. So like when it comes like to your race run to your qualifying run or whatever it is, like like you know, they put your head like that you don't ever think so you have the confidence. And then that's what gives you the performance, you know, because like everyone that I like this time,
like everyone that's writing like super well, like we all like point nothing off each other. Like everyone's in the same second is so tight. So like just like that little extra confidence, he just makes a massive difference. Even if he's yeah, even if he's one second, one second came in like 20th, making through finals. What's that if faith, you know, like it's they start this like yeah, like this year. It's the volume or is it the intensity of writing? Do you know what I mean? Because if you ride loads of laps, you tend to get quicker. Is that it or is it just riding loads that makes you feel confident on the bike? Yeah, I think I think riding loads does. But like also quality like you can just go out there and ride loads without any like why are you doing like without any intent, you know. Yeah, you need to have like a like intent like all like okay this day like like like I told you like this that day I planned I'm going to do six laps.
I'm going to do three laps of like recognizing the track three laps like quality. But you need to have like some something to or today are going to work or looking ahead today are going to work on like trying not to break like around the corner is like break her and like, you know, I don't know if it exists. I just stuff like that. So cool that you do. I don't want to name drop by spoke to Warner only the other day about when he was younger, he went riding moto with Mike Brown and he said he couldn't believe it. He turned up at six in the morning of track. 45 minutes. So he did like a full 45 minute moto. Sit down 45 minute moto. And that's the whole day riding done and it was like 10 o'clock in the morning. They drive back go to the gym then rest and like just having that like structure. I always think moto is really good for it. I know it's like a different sport but like there are a lot of like similarities. Just having those like moto. The fact that you can just bump out like exactly what you're going to be racing.
That's literally what you're doing, isn't it? Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, trying to like to the yeah like us the best you can like to like kind of simulate. Similarly, I've raised your or like yeah trying to like get better or something specific. But yeah, I think like volume is really good but like the intent is like the main thing like. Like having like intent to go out that day and just even if even if it's like the intent is like having fun, you know. Like okay, I'm just going to have fun just going to enjoy like loads of trails like not going to focus on one trail. Just going to ride loads of different trails and just have fun. That could be also like really good. So you having the best season of your life so far. What are you working on? Is there anything that you like? What is there something that you have? Nice question. Yeah, what do you think's missing basically? I don't really know how to word it but it's a good question. It's a very nice question. Yeah, no, that's really good.
There's always things to work I guess. But you're always trying to get fit there like even though you like already fit by always trying to improve under your fitness. And then there's always things on the bike that you can improve as well, you know. And then like that's where at the minute like I'm trying to improve my bike a little bit more. I'm like feeling a bit fatigued at the end of the runs on some 90 tracks. And I feel like I'm on practice. I'm riding the bottom like really quick. But because I stop on a bit before and then on my race runs I feel like I'm riding like quite a lot less intensity. Like because my arms like are getting like pumped up and I'm just getting tired like which is like fitness slash. So it's a no slash like I can wear it by. Is it on the bike? Is it your arms? I think it's both. So like trying to work on on the iron at a minute because I think if I can have the same intensity I'm having like at the top of the run at the bottom then.
Then watch our boys. So good. I love the idea of like just completely changing you go through your whole becoming really fast on the bike. You just mess around maybe do some races do this do that. You've turned professional. I love the idea of having this like path where you do these five runs that you're talking about. And then you make that your norm so that's just every day just doing like just clocked up. Yeah exactly like clock in the five intense runs like at level. I don't think it's possible but I wonder what it would do to like structure your life as if every single day is a world cup. That would be crazy. We talked I'm not quite there yet. No, I'm not right to to these marks a week but I did them trends and we were laughing about how funny it would be if this was being a professional mountain bike. It was this just one way to Friday. Yeah just Monday to Friday you're just doing that many you know like two thousand five hundred meters of climbing a day.
You'd be exhausted. Race run so you're doing sprints like yeah we were like you would die. Or you're riding would have to change but I wonder whether I wonder how much you could sustain like a weekly race. If you did it once a week of a race day. Like whether that would help or like you're with a like yeah except love that stuff. It's so interesting. Yeah like like the last block of races I was pretty much. I think seven weeks like seven weeks seven six weekends back to back racing really so it's like. When I went back to UK I was like oh like I didn't want to like touch the bike I wanted to just like. To like kind of process ever feeling like chill for a bit and then and then I signed up to race national champs back in Brazil. So I had to go back out there and like race that so it was not much time I think it was like two weeks when I even that and then I was back racing again. But yeah it was like it was it was good at the same time because you just you just carrying that momentum you know.
And then I will have these break and then you go back into it and it's like that kind of uncertainty you know like you lose that like. The momentum you know like just like the week that we can like the same thing is like it's like a reset kind of thing. Yeah which can be good but you also can. Yeah can go sideways I guess. Yeah how much of a routine do you have to keep in your life just to stay on top of the game. Because I know I'm trying to think you know like for me I do my best work with a bit of a routine a bit of a like okay I do this every day at my coffee at this time. But then you could do that here but then you in South Korea and then you here and then you're on a different time zone. How much do you have to put into trying to keep some sort of routine or. Yeah it's really hard to have one like we fly all the races like so like. The gym like I tried to know like do any gym works like on the race week and like let's say last time like it was like six or six weekends with race week so I didn't do any like gym stuff like.
I told which is kind of kind of bad way kind of works because like at the same time I'm like not feeling tired like you know like see if I do a gym session then I just you fatigue these your legs hurt and stuff. So like yeah it's hard to keep it and then like when you come back home then you try to get back into that routine but like that you had enough season. But then again it's hard because like sometimes it's like two weeks and then and then like because I let's say like you you you all there six weekends six weeks not doing gym then you come back start try to start getting to the routine you go back to the gym for one week and then I have to go to Brazil that the next weekend. It's like I did one week gym then I'm out to Brazil and then I go back come back one week here. It's like it's almost like like no so you're trying to like do like little stuff so I've been doing like trying to do pushups and stuff like that like stuff that you can do like by yourself yeah like just to keep on top of things but yeah it's really hard to like keep like I like yeah routine like during the season.
On the off season is a bit easier because like you normally like just find like when we went to to Queenstown we we had a gym there we just like we're going there like two or three times a week and then you just keep like doing all the all the like you know like all your normal like workouts and stuff yeah but it's too different because you're riding almost every day which is which is good. You just switch like structured off season yeah really makes me that made me quite excited and I think it will probably talk about would be okay but obviously having this is such an insane facility that you can come here you can be based here you can go do runs if something happens come and fix it you're not just off in a van somewhere hoping for the best hoping nothing breaks yeah this is more like you were saying about like the moto setup if you watch yeah just like the Baker factory or how those guys are like rocks and set up. It's this with a track. Yeah it's this and it's so close. Yeah we close very close. Not far off and it's some trainers here and some guys telling us what to do and you know we'd be there. I mean and some guys on the track as though I just like well with flash just like.
Linespotters. Yeah different than it would down. I think we don't need linespotters up there we know all the lines. Yeah. You need them with some binoculars. Yeah probably like find some dodgy lines. Some dodgy rougies. Let's talk more about the 2026 season as well after this break. May this one is the easiest ad read that we do we're just going to speak from the heart works have been a sponsor of ours for years and we've very few majority of the tools at this point. Absolutely. I mean I've got yeah I've really sort of read on my house with work tools. Yeah I've got a plethora. I bought in my show and tell this is you want sorry yes show and tell exactly so this is my hydroshot and I bought it in because I wanted to show and tell and talk about the things that I really love about it. Please is that okay. I'd love for you to do that please. So basically one of the one of the key things beyond the actual function of this which we're getting to in second. It's the fact that it's part of the power share system now every single power tool I own and whether that's
garden home DIY my chainsaw trail building I've got two chainsaws. I need to actually keep my voice down otherwise works will hear and I stop sending me a. I'm spoiled yeah but this power share this goes in everything I own so I can't tell you how easy that makes life. I've always got something charged up I'm not the most dialed with like having us set up charging area so it's always good to know that you've always got batteries. Yep. It's true. Hop in here in a waterproof case nice there it is and you're off to the races now this I use attached to my hose. Yep but previously I've used it with the hose connection that goes into a water source so you can do it from a water source or a river so you can have it in the back of your van. Yeah to clean your bike. Yeah super handy portable of course like I've done that before I've finished a ride. I've been part near a water source whether it's a puddle or a or even actually taking water
in the water. I saw David once. I saw David wash down. Yeah I dicked it into my bucket that I take it. Yeah watch the buy in the back of the van dry when you get home sometimes I even use my works leaf blower. No you don't to dry a leaf blower. Gangs. I've got a need for this. But yeah love this brand love the tools super easy. I mean the hydroshots become a MTB must doesn't it? I mean it really has. You don't owe one you may as well not have bike. Yeah your bike's really going to end up landfill. Yeah this is actually the nitro version as well so this this is a more powerful and some extra beans some extra beans it's got this like adjustable head so you can adjust like the spray like any I mean we don't need to tell you what a pressure washer does this does what a pressure washer does but I can't tell you how good it is and how easy it's made my life and I've been using it for so long this is the
literally the easiest advert to do. I before I had a hose fitting on my house I used to live in a flat. I used to wheel the bikes into the flat. It was so annoying having muddy bikes I just it just meant I had a muddy house. I got this it literally changed my life. I'm not even joking. I could wash my bikes and I didn't have to live in a big style and then I could get a girlfriend. Dude look at us now. This jet wash has changed your entire life. Yeah it's meant that I can actually have a partner in life. I'm not just on my own with a muddy house. I mean what an endorsement. It's mind blowing isn't it? Yeah I'm mind blowing. What's even better than that so people can get a partner change the life and say 15% of how much 15% dude. I mean the fact 15% you're serious. I mean to fact that they offer this product to general public as something you can just buy is ridiculous enough and now we're offering it
for 15% less. You'll never see a single mountain bike again. I mean I kind of want to keep it secret a little bit. I was a bit this the only downer about doing these ads. I wanted to keep it a bit secret. I don't want everyone to have the secret to my success in life. Maybe we're going overboard. We actually do know what it's a product we don't really need to. It the hard short is absolutely unbelievable and you say we get 15% off. How do we get 15% off? Head to works.com enter the promo code the ride companion. It's on screen right now the promo code is flashing black and orange the ride companion at works.com change your life. The running by working at works.com. Yeah. He's is that seems easy. Easy. Change your life to thanks works. Cheers works. And we're back. Was only a great one. Yeah. I mean yeah. Don't want to lose momentum quick. Quick. Equal. We'll turn in as they say. Keep in turning. David can I take your next question? It's so good.
For me. Well no. Yes. For you actually. Yeah. What's your favorite color? No. Teal. Roch has I think this is a really good question. Just what I'm reading out word for word. Okay. Has factory support made you faster or simply given you the opportunity to share our fast. You already were. Oh God. I think you gave me the opportunity to show how fast I really was for sure. I think I was already fast but like rough on the edges like never had like an offseason to actually dedicate I was always had to work. So I would like come to the bike park like not that often like I told you like I did like bike queen style which was February. I had already done like so much laps you know on the on the bike where I never never had before. And just working on those hours that I for was my weakness like I always looked good on on the bike and on on sections but swan thing to look good and then peace all the pieces at the buzzer together you know like for a full run. So yeah I think we kind of
managed to. To get closer there's offseason and it's showing on the results this year. So it's just chipping away just small amounts of work on everything or do you have something that you think you've definitely improved on for this season. Yeah like I think like I talked a bit about this on last time I was on the pod like I was working on my exit speed exit speed I love. Yeah I think that's interesting. I really like him. Yeah I think that's like the main I think I always tend to charge into sections too fast and that's why people who are he's so fast but then you get to the next corner don't have any exit speed for the next section so you just kind of calm yourself. It's almost like riding slower to ride faster you know so you almost like calm yourself and then obviously all the help all the support mechanic all the the factor support that like it was needed you know. Now I have so
everything just helps go to the heck is that what Milway was talking about when he was last on about birdie slowing him down to go faster. Yeah and I was just thinking it's probably this is probably a silly take and we might even edit it out. It's a legend but is it a people riding a little bit above the head because of the structure of a race weekend now or do you think they always did because you wouldn't have to in a weird way because you knew you're in finals and you could just yeah it's a bad take. I can't really figure out how to like word it but is there a bit more of urgency which then you've got to then unpack to go slower to go faster. Does that make any sense? No move on. Yeah no no no yeah like I understand like the urgency thing like obviously like everyone always it's always there. Yeah it's wanting to like go fast that quick because you don't have much time practice like you do like first day of practice you do six runs like roughly and then you
do another two runs before quality so like that's a laps total before you're going to a quality run which potentially is your race run these days because like you want to go through Q1 which is top 20 and to do that you pretty much need to do a race run right right then and you only don't eight laps on the track you know so it's not much time so everyone is like but that's the other thing that I think you helped me a lot these years like like the mindset and like having someone's well to help me with that you know like I'm like I'm mental coach you just like trying to like not get you into the into the red zone you know yeah like you're trying to like everything that happens because like you have these eight laps and on these eight laps you're trying to like get the bike to work good on that specific track because some tracks like I really steep really like lots of holes big change on the bike so you like you have to change the bike some tracks are like
really fast but like a bit flatter so like like soft career like it was like really like weird track like so you wanted like suspension everything like really soft right but then that doesn't work in Liddenville which is like really steep and like really like so you want like steep like so you like on the those eight laps at the same time that you're trying to go as fast as you can you also trying to like get your bike there as well you know so like there's a lot but like you're trying to trust the process and like not get yourself on the red um explain the red like the red is like the red zone where you really stressed out and like you're punnicking about stuff and like yeah you're like you worried about like I can get to the right setup I can I can get this right and I can like you comparing times already I'm not writing fast and stuff like that and you're just like punnicking like and then you try and to get yourself into the blue the blue is like the blue zone I trust myself like trust the process everything's gonna be all right like you still have time
you know you know what I mean like just like trying to calm yourself down to not like folks folks on the track folks on you on the bike and like you know try to you know what I mean like I know we're going like in a different different talk here but like no this is one of the first time I was just thinking about and I appreciate you rescuing me from the bad questions right? It's really hard so many athletes on that have had coaching yeah for their racing yeah and I actually think it's the first time someone's broken it down as well as that I think like I've never heard the red zone blue zone makes perfect sense and it's something that this really helped you you think yeah for sure yeah because like even like in time train like say I like recently I've been doing like not that good in train train I've been like top 30 like to 40 like guy and then like I started looking at goal pros and like start punnicking like oh my god I like I don't have something then you're then trying to change something you're going like I need seven seconds to be where I think I need to deal I need five seconds or I need three seconds like yeah but you start pointing at sometimes the bike feels good so like all
sometimes the bike could not be feeling that good it's you know you have to change something on the bike but like most of the time like by time training I have the bike pretty diode but then you start thinking oh where can I go faster where like but like you and you start like worrying about it but like every time that being on that position I managed to to qualify so like like you just like trying to let you know like I'll tell yourself then like trust like the process and like trust like because like it is like I say these six runs that you do like time training six runs not really enough like at least for me to to be like that fast yet and then for some people they just they just managed to do it you know they just think about it like sensibly when I'm on a ride we're riding quick I'm following someone I'll wash front two two seconds lost still after however many years of doing it I'm like I'm getting those two seconds back yeah yeah yeah I'm doing something in this next 15 seconds of track that is going to get me two seconds back what's not break coming
into the score exactly and then like back again obviously it doesn't happen but like I think everyone's really I think probably as I say that probably a lot of people are like yeah that's exactly how I think as well like I could yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and then you're basically doing that at race if you get yourself in the wrong headspace yeah yeah yeah yeah I can need to fucking triple something that's completely untripleable yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah but like yeah I think like they this like the way to think is like it's really hard to gain two seconds on a 15 seconds but you have a four minute track so you can make 30 seconds on a 15 seconds and if you can make that 30 seconds in every like 15 seconds off the track I defend it's going to be like 10 seconds you know right okay yeah yeah so you know what I mean like so like like you can't make 15 in a 15 second section you can't make two seconds but you can make 30 not 30 seconds or point I understand yeah point point point three point three yeah so just like half second half a second a little bit
it's everywhere yeah so like a little bit everywhere then it will adapt to a lot of time yeah so yeah that's that's how you don't really make little bits everywhere by being like watch this do you it has to be a more calm approach because it has to be about the whole track yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm gonna fucking wall up this turn I have to know like how does that feel internally as well so you getting more just in the process and not getting into the red are you do you notice that now you'll be like okay I'm going red to dial it back yeah like normally it's so interesting it's yeah no it's hard for me because I get I can get myself out during practice but then when like let's say first day of practice time training goals red zone didn't do a great run blah blah blah but then I normally talk with my mental coach which is like Kiran from the hype performance and he's like he comes I'll have a talk to him but after that I already reflecting and I already know why I did wrong so but like but just talking to him and then he reassuring me like I go to the next
day which is like the quality day with like such a better like headspace and then I already know like okay this is what I need to do and then you have another two run practice runs you try to get then good if you're not like happy with your time you try to like time then like time one of those two runs again and then you get time it's like okay yet okay I'm already five seconds quicker than yesterday or whatever it is you know yeah and then you're going to quality is like yeah like I got this and then you go under the five seconds quicker yeah I'm interested right clearly you're approach to street racing this is a separate chapter of the podcast I'm not I'm not trying to jump around too much but street racing you go straight in and your head is like completely like made for that is different like totally different why how yeah I don't know like everyone says like oh why you need to race where it comes if you say mindset like as a street race what feels different like
yeah I don't know like it's just a total different beast isn't it like you're racing like I already talked about this one for starters the track never changed well like you know like you're not going to come to that corner and like it's going to be a whole there it's not going to be blown out like the lines is the same and yeah like there is limit to the to the to the grape as well it's hard to explain but like I don't know like it's just different and then like because I won't want like I have that confidence like that like you know like the example is there that like I don't want to say like cocky vibe but like you have that like that like you know inflated ego kind of thing which it can show us like a rugged but like it's so good for racing like being like that confident like it's just yeah it's like the best thing you can you can you can have like for racing you know like not having any doubt on
your mind yeah I know all those doubts I talked we talked about on the word cup I don't have enough down the on the street race like I know like they only be the only person like at least like that last last last one in general I knew like the only person that could be me was me like only I could like you know sabotage myself like if I did a mistake or like you know like no I knew like I was like the fastest and like I could do that like all weekend which is really cool but at the same time really like it's like a big big thing you know like pressure to have yeah is a lot pressure and also like there was like really good riders there you know like it's also like like a balance like between but like I knew I could do it you know do you see it do you see now that you've had that feeling in a street race do you see it on riders in the World Cup series? Oh yeah for sure yeah yeah like 100% and I feel like I also like starting to bring a bit that like
like I'm I'm that close now that I feel like if everything goes right one like one weekend and like I get like the run on my life down down a track and you'd let's say I feel off the top like is every weekend those people crashing and having flat tones stuff like that like I'm pretty sure I can like pour you on quite not quite easily but like I'm pretty sure like I could you know like because I'm that close is like make the tweed like yeah like I was going for it like I was like either like gonna get top 10 here or I'm gonna crash and the crash I was trying you know and playing that dusty corner out yeah yeah so make you are on yeah like I was like two seconds off the win in qualis which is that was crazy like both to come as that like yeah it's it's not much it was a lot but what did you say
that's two seconds is close to go of the win wow yeah it's those two seconds you lost when you watched your front front front wheel dude they thought you couldn't make it yeah yeah but yeah no it's uh it is interesting racing it's it's crazy but I think a lot like everyone says and like all the time there's a lot of that up here and it is a lot up here dude yeah like what have you got any like tangible tips for managing that stress at a street race because again just the thought that you've gone quickest in quali you won the year before you know you can do it but how do you just just restrain and the idea of like local races around the country yeah that all around the world actually and then just there's just kids at the top just with the most dialled mindset we're putting our race runs yes it's completely focused no it's quite chaotic like like these weekend like you know like we talked about like
tracks not changing but like these these these weekend in specific the Genovo one that like this year it was really hot like bare like quite almost like 40 degrees and laughing was like 37 38 like and I was like just drinking water drinking water and like or had quali's I think it was like two o'clock or something like that three two three o'clock which was like really hot and I came down my run and I was like telling my mechanically like felt like I had a flat tire like and like the grip was like really bad and I think it was because of the heat it was so hot but I was coming into like what my normal breaking points like you tried to like push then a bit forward for qualis just to test it out but I would I would get on the brakes and the bike would just like not stop just like drag like you didn't you know the tires would just like yeah not grip on the on the tire mark and I like you would do the corners and the tire was just like the knobs would just fold it the you just like do I have a flat tire do I
not and I was like oh this is interesting and then like I did like warm qualis by like two seconds which was like amazing I was like oh that's cool well I was pushing really hard at the same time because I really wanted to win because the points and everything and then for finals we ended up like I think starting like half six or something like before my race I was like thinking what to do and I was like I looked at the sky and I was I looked at the semi was like behind the clouds it was like lower down I was like I'm just gonna risk I think I think the grip is gonna be better because it's not that hot it's cooler and I just yeah it just spayed off I just like break even later for the things and see it's that confidence or is it grip life's full but like I made that decision like just before my race run all like to do that wow I was like I'm just gonna risk and like leave it like breaking points like to do like really late and it's hard to find those breaking points like what are the the breaking points is it
yeah like breaking up like on the right like when you see that going just break sometime you just go by instinct like I think I can break here it's one two three break now most of the time you're not thinking much about is like really autumn like yeah like just instinct is you know I was saying yeah um but like yeah I was super nervous and I went up to grab out out water and like fish back where I was like on the screen because like he he had like he lost his chain on quality so I knew he was gonna be good because he qualified with falchain on that track that has to pedal so much it's really impressive yeah so I was like he's definitely has something like to me like yeah and I didn't want to know anything and I went up and his room was on the screen and so like he did like I want to like 235 were you watching it or you like no I got there and then like his room was like there and I was like okay I'm gonna watch it like okay whatever and then I watch then and he's like went to the hot set with a
better time than I did in qualis like by a second and I was like okay like I was like it's gonna be hard really hard but if everything goes right I got this so like put a bit more pressure into me by the same time I also like kind of giving a little not more confidence but a little bit like I knew I could do it but like I knew also it was good gonna be hard but like yeah the warmup was horrible like just like just warming up and like just like super nervous super stressed I'm interested I'm still stuck on red and blue as you go through that weekend are the moments of red mainly blue at street race let's say for instance like how often do you feel yourself he's just hey it's crazy isn't it I think he's a lot more in the blue because like I think he's just such a chilled vibe and such a chilled like event like everyone's friends with each other like I have my friends from Brazil we like yeah we talk we do runs together it's like like just
super friendly like and it's just like good vibe you know like it's not like that like craziness of like a word cup like the word cup is just like so much pressure like so much things that can go wrong and stuff and there is just like I don't know it's just like a chilled chilled vibe and like you don't have as much like you know practice it's a bit chaotic in practice because you have like little you're just like going up and down and down but like normally everything goes goes good and everyone's in the same boat I guess yeah like a street race it just feels like if it's hectic practices same yeah exactly no one's getting extra runs world cup I imagine sometimes you're like what's everyone else doing or maybe I don't know like yeah normally I used to like go like in the word cup like to the queue like really early like a lot of people do like staying the queue like an hour before practice starts and then you're just there real seeing the queue and then like to get like an extra run let's say like well like these days I just like end up like going lost yeah but it doesn't help much because then you get a queue at the top like at the start
gate but like just a bit more chill about it like you know um man how cool is it it seems like you know what to do yeah rather you see this like you've won him what a cool yeah what a cool example actually having like street race and then project world cup yeah yeah sort of worked out the formula for a street race you know what you got to do kind of for a world cup it seems it's quite cool what unique position yeah yeah definitely like yeah definitely helped and helps um it's just like figuring out what like kind of works for you in that process and um and obviously like I think that the moments that count the most is like the moment it's like you can do everything right during the week and then get to that you know like the five seconds before you drop in like the 30 seconds like you in the gate or like whatever it is the time like if you start thinking the wrong things there oh wow then like that's it you're done you know and I feel like I got that sore dial now like I got in the gate and I just I'm such a good headspace like like all the pressure
goals I'm just like okay I got this like you just start telling positive things to yourself and yeah you just like try to concentrate on your breathing and then and then once you go then like hopefully every like normally everything just you know goals goes away and you just is just you you let's hyper focused like flow state into that run you don't hear anyone you don't hear anything you just like into it yeah now it's what's the rest of the season look like because are you leading the series right now yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm leading the series and how many how many races are left it's just one yeah next one yeah stuck guard yeah interesting when are you all know oh god uh stuck guard is the seven six six August yeah yeah next one yeah next one next one it's August now out there this the end of this month I've got there September then yeah September yeah build some uh wait yeah yeah must be need to build some thinner for my advantage
no I did I know exactly yeah yeah the blue section which one paint something no no no no it's exciting it's the first I mean I imagine um it's pretty cool having a new spot on the Sarah back up yeah it's cool I think the series is going like a really good direction like they're starting self-america now we have more rounds in Europe than in self-america which is really cool um and they're trying to grow more and more you know um and it's such a cool cool series isn't it's like we got loads of spectators burn it's yeah burn is just turned off so is there fling it's so cool being in dummy because you feel like you're in all the stories that people posted the Mac loop and all of that yeah um absolutely back to what you're saying yeah the Sarah back up yeah no yeah it's cool man it's it feels like the series is growing like and like we get to visit like there's new new towns new new cities and the people from that town and that city get to know the sport and they start to follow the sport and brings
brings more fans bring hopefully more people riding bikes it's just yeah it's it's a different like avenue to Dormo downhill bikes is normally like a downhill race is like in a village like you know very yeah in the mountain town like on a place where there's not many people that actually leave there where we are going to like big towns like Stuttgart is like one of the biggest yeah towns in Germany isn't it in a race still got so cool as well yeah and like it's where focus bikes are based so I go there all the time and the riding the riding scenes really cool so you ride up in the hills everyone ends up in the city it's quite unique to me you don't really get that you know you can't like what so you're going to hang out on the street after a ride in a city yeah that's cool pretty cool so I think the atmosphere is going to be amazing I'm super excited about that yes that's mega cool and all of the plans for the track look really excited yeah it's going to be a hell of a race I'm excited man yeah yeah that should be should be really cool
so that's the one do you know have you worked out points wise what you have to get oh someone told me someone told me I need to get four four better if both are better if Sebastian weans okay but yeah yeah so I'm rooting for you honestly I'll try to win the race and then see what happens we can do it all you can do yeah stay in the blue after an outbreak welcome to the bike star hi there and I'm looking for a little R&R for my bike do you have any different things you can suggest maybe I name it's Ollie Wilkins yes Ollie let me take you through our treatments we believe we can offer something for every rider and their bike first we have the perennium massage oh that sounds really nice yeah or we have the sound bath
sound bath if you really want to treat it we have an incredible hot yoga session available oh yeah I suppose the heat's quite nice but probably that's yeah okay however we do have the custom wrap the custom wrap our custom wrap is a custom fitted ppf wrap designed exclusively for your bike it provides a rejuvenating and revitalize and finish it really doesn't get much better than that don't wait I mean obviously I'm gonna go for that then yeah please great choice I'll book that right in while you wait you can take advantage of our mindfully prepared bike owner relaxation space complete with carefully selected multimedia entertainment and the refreshing scent of Eucalyptus aromatherapy oh the place is the best would you like a glass of cucumber infused glacial water
yes I would I'm in sunny shrews being the UK the best place to show up what was pretty good isn't it you what a lease of life I couldn't believe it's you you
tell you what may we always say it but that genuinely what an ad fantastic unbelievable effort well done you did really good in that one I feel refreshed and rejuvenated you do well I tell you what how about you want to pass that feeling onto your bike all you got to do head to envisieframe.co.uk enter the code refresh and ride what is it Ollie is that refresh and ride all in capitals and that I'll get you a whopper of 15% off kits decals anything on the side refresh and ride 15% off thank you envisieframe back to the episode Ollie how's your day going mate oh I've just turned up at double bike park yeah my day is not going as planned oh no why I got my bike it's so soft and there's jumps here and I need to pump up my suspension front and rear you know what you need what new shock pump what does that do this mate this is the all new sks shock pump it looks really nice and I actually didn't know it was a shock pump because it looks so high quality that could be
some sort of like measuring equipment for seismic activity very true it's very technical it's very nice very pretty yeah I think this is almost like the what do we like the multi tool where you have one for years it's all beat up the one I had before this one because this is actually my one yeah the glass was all smashed the gauge didn't work properly and a lot of the setup was quite guesstimation okay did you say this was Rolex or who makes this no this one is SKS okay yes not right yes very similar it's the roll exit the shock pumps yeah so yeah this one just landed with us would I mean I've used it once it's a painted pressure release function oh it's got a paid to pressure release function which I have used so you just twist that and then nothing worse than then too much pressure out exactly and then some of the fluid comes out and it can't even go in your eye that is very true it's got an aluminium tube with a plastic housing which I think is quite neat that's really nice yeah this is always floating around in it getting beat up damaged it's quite nice yeah it's also got a rotatable EPD M hose tell me what that is that
that's really cool because again some some of the cheaper ones are a bit like oh and you're trying to see the thing and you're twisting it just to rend us and an extra large pressure gauge because we're getting old you know I mean and sometimes I can't see numbers low light you're there first thing in the morning like I was this morning here turning up at the bike park looking at my bike trying to saw your squinty I was squinty it's also got a nice gauge on it so you don't have to worry about working out what PSA is the bar etc etc it's a lovely piece of kit isn't it they've thought about everything exactly so why not think about getting one SKS just head to the internet pump in SKS tools and you'll find this where you get your bike parts I'm going to do that now because I'm jealous straight up yeah and you've you've got a softy I hope to be honest I was hoping I could borrow yours for today I'll end it you may be yeah well I'll just bother on okay do it now I'll do okay thanks SKS let's go back to the show let's do that
what's more stressful being a privateer or riding for a factory team question thank you I don't know it's different types of stress I reckon yeah but like if I were to pull I mean yeah it depends like being a privateer can be so stressful but then can also and when you know life you don't have a mechanical if you don't have any problems then it can be like super chill but then being a privateer been a factory it's pretty chill to be fair like in this team it's pretty chill like I don't feel any pressure like to perform like from from BK let's say because he's like the team manager or from anyone you know like obviously you know you you have to but like I don't feel any pressure you know so like the only pressure comes like Ray from the I want to do well yeah and then you have all the the help you need
do you go out there and perform the help you have to be good enough that the help will help that's great it's a good point do you know what I mean yeah would you think that I think the factory be pointless for me privateer versus factory for you the same question yeah what would do you think you would perform better and I think I'd like the structure of the factory team I think that would suit me yeah yeah having structure obviously I get pretty stressed pretty anxious sometimes I think if it was all on my own dime let's say you're paid to go to South Korea off your own pocket which no doubt you probably would have had to have done yes with a little bit of help from various sponsors this and that but ultimately you're in South Korea on your own quite a sketchy so I think I probably would like the environment of a team structure suits me personally I think I do often think about that because I think just give me a sh- I'll do it down the barrel just give us a shot mate I'm only 39 I'll be 40 next year I reckon just need a chance he just got to have
a pull up bar on a track up the hill he doesn't have a trend of getting old guys into the team so you got a shot dude you're gression out shoot you shot come on yeah do you like the elevator into like do something so it's like can you make it so it's like really an inspiration or we can put music because dog can put music to it to make this I think throughout all my life I'll be 40 when this potentially opportunity happens just need a chance and no one's ever taking a chance on me so just the bike the kit a mechanic a hefty hefty wage I love the old deer vlog the violin noise and then the hefty wage is like yeah he's really really like hefty wage my struggle with that one but he's so good hey the reason I offer you an old lendra as a payment as you team van we'll see you in
lajaye which one of these is your company car I haven't seen any like little signs on it I can't put my fucking stuff oh sorry I should put my side on the on the Ferrari yeah the board of board outside just the reason I asked you is because I genuinely don't know the answer to the question for me I don't know whether I should did that question that you asked me like was like what was it like like about being faster or yeah you know they're the good question you fall stars it's good point yeah he might already the opportunity the opportunity he he just he might just need the opportunity yeah to show his style yeah you see that's the problem no one's ever given me a fat wage I'm free by you cause in treaty on the wrong bit the far wage is not gonna do anything the wage yeah the wage comes in probably very early and I've always
thought that for the last 40 years it's been like hey just you know get the guy shot get the guy a shot break his fat wage he does broke he does he's touching them breaks from the grand year he does broke in the same place as me in their show so yeah yeah yeah yeah so got chance dude yeah I reckon anyway so more on the actual reason I asked is because I'm not 100% sure that the certain things would suit me okay being like about more pressure yeah yeah yeah yeah every single person yeah you've been really close to all your life which is really interesting because you watch your friends go for it yeah I've been it's a great example yeah yeah that's where I think like it's really important where you are like you know like the team I think there are some teams I don't know but like I'm I'm guessing there are some teams that make you feel like you have to perform and there is a pressure like no one says anything but there's a vibe and like I sense off like you know pressure and then that ends up like you start overthinking on your head and
then you start having that pressure and then you can't perform where like I think that's what is so good about like our team like I don't feel no no that you know like I don't like feel there any of the riders get get there from no and I think you get that it's just a vibe from the outside as well I think you do I think like that's what is like it looks fun it looks fun yeah you're to make it look fun yeah exactly so he's just he's just he's just up to you isn't it like you but like at the same time someone can come into like you said like different person different mentality yeah could come into it and then could start like you know thinking day pressure you know I guess maybe factory team isn't the example because really you're not going to win a world cup if you don't have any support but maybe AMB rider is a better example and like number one number two seat yeah I think for instance I would not do well in the number one seat on a team okay being like guy that everyone is like focusing on like yeah this is the fast yeah I think underdog would
suit me better personally would you say it would suit you better would you if I'm it I'd find that stuff I know can we can we can we talk about next year about this next episode I'll let you know how he goes being the first rider yeah true yeah like it nice do you ever think about where you'd be if this opportunity didn't come up yeah I do yeah but let's keep I guess that I know this is like such a unique thing that we've obviously no I threw the podcast documented this the first time you came on and you know you really opened up about you oh I don't know if there's a chance to this ever happening and then boom you're straight in it just two weeks that's crazy we've been like today certainly like me and becaus just like talking about like oh like he's like my my crash was the best thing that happened to you like yeah and he's like like through kind of like
you know like he crashed and then a spot came over there when the team and then I came in you know and it's crazy that like like it was like and everything was because we went to Valparaiso on the Sahaba race and on the way back I was like traveling with wind we masters and then on the way back like we all had we're in the same plane in same flight right so we were all like he got get to know me and therefore we were all like joking around and like having fun well we was bully me we were trying to bully win and it was just like like just like banter you know and then he got to know me and then when he came the time where he got injured and needed a ride rider he obviously the podcast was fresh as well so like my name probably wasn't on the top of his office head and then I got a call so sick yeah there was crazy to think that he's just because off that you know like a few things just happening just yeah yeah fitting to place crazy and yeah now I'm leaving the dream and best
life really oh yeah it's pretty cool oh yeah so if you could summarize 2026 so far yeah it's going pretty good banger results we won a street race national champion clinton into champion continental champion sorry no but both what national Americans and it yeah it's continent to champion and then I was national champion as well last like continental yeah nice and it's like like your European championship but then it's for just continental sounds yeah I've never thought about European champs being a continental champion yeah it is isn't it like the continent sounds cool yeah yeah so sick yeah they call it yeah they call it pump venom yeah pandemic venom icon or whatever yeah well I yes yeah all South America plus yeah yeah yeah both were in Brazil yeah yeah yeah I was gonna ask you about like the scene in Brazil because it's cool because I guess you grew up there then you've moved away then you dip your toe back in you go you visit
you see you probably star of the show there as well now it is really sick yeah on billboards it's not that big like the this sport is really is it going? but like when I left it was in a really good spot and I think you went downhill from when I left and it feels like now it's time to go up again but it's still still quite small and it's not yeah it's not where it was when I when I left okay I really yes yeah yeah interesting yeah but it's like old like like they were like you know the people they organized the races and stuff like that is like the races I know are like really good they have like few races like very small I'm on the races so like people are just not really they are all fed up with like the the federations and like everything you know like when I used to race there was like like in Norse so like each state has their own federation so like on our state we had like two different
like a clandestine federation let's say it and then I official one and each of them had like 10 races a year right where now there's only one and they have like five five or four races a year you know yeah so like so much less racing so yeah okay we got three rounds left of the downhill will cop blizzard would show the day blizzard show the first world champs of course what are your hopes and aspirations for the rest of the season what you're aiming for yeah like obviously like every like being really really like realistic I really want to like break into that top 10 which I'm re re-sales and 13th and or is it yeah so breaking that top 10 and like I said like it would insane if I got like I know it's like really hard but I feel like if I do manage to pull like a really good run down I could like like maybe like a podium like that
would insane to get a podium I feel it's come in yeah it's big-ass but I feel like I got this um so yeah let's see yeah I've just got gonna go into these races like I treat any other and try to do my best run and then the result will be well there's some exciting ones coming up I guess too obviously Le Jaze always a big one yeah Whistler is new for everybody it's cool yeah well they're just isn't 11 no no isn't it the track oh is it I think it is isn't it oh I don't know I thought I don't know it's a new track I might be wrong I thought this was so take that back it's not I don't know as well I know 100% sure but I thought it was the one that is 11 I know no okay I'm not interesting VK would know yeah yeah VK would now I might be wrong as well we'll find out yeah we'll find out next episode yeah yeah and then yeah like Blasseyd which I did that was my best ever last year so I rad it's a good track there yeah for me and then we have
word champs which is wild soul which is my favorite so what makes a good track for you if founder souls your favorite and like placards like just like steep and like techie and like yeah rock steep and tech yeah like Darbyshire just tech I feel like I'm a really good technical rider yeah what do you think you're a good technical rider I know what I think you're I know I think you're a good technical rider it's not like I grew up like riding a low in the wet yeah and like when is wet in Brazil it's like it's like actually it's not like here today you can ride with like dry tires you need to have mud tires and it's really slippery like the mud is like really fake and I think that gives you like a lot of like you know like technical skills like with the like breaking and like yeah how to move on the bike and then the track that we had where I lived then we ended my dad built it was like really tight but like really steep and like awkward yeah similar to black rocks but like I would ride there so much so like I think yeah then I just
got like good I steep techie stuff yeah I think that's why and also I guess I'm small and stuff like kind of helps as well but I think you don't like over ride a bike that's what I think when I watch I've fun very impressive all over the place will max always like I reckon you look like yeah but now trolled operator yeah no Gavin enough me two three years ago that's why I've been working off season oh good wow it's yeah yeah no no that's that's that's really good like like they're really good for you think for you to say because I think I'm pretty sure if I look I've read off me like two three years ago I'll be all over the place like like looks really fast but not really it's like like Bruno isn't it like when you see like Bruno he's like looks like he's like not going fast at all and then he gets the finish line and then boom fastest time yeah that's so it kind of leads us perfectly on something I wanted to ask you because we had win on
not that long ago and win could kind of point out what certain athletes in the pointy and we're doing better than others yeah do you have any that you're like okay I really want to get exit speed like x person or whatever break it whatever breaking like x person yeah like I feel I always feel like I'm like not very good like a jumping and stuff like even like that's something that we've been working as well in the off season by bk has been trying to help me because he's such a good guy jump like so let's say steep leap and like you know like jumping like race race jumping he would like follow me and he say I can put a second into you like on the on the second on a section of like with three jumps right and then we've been trying to work my technique in jumps I have a word technique where I like put my all my weight to the back of the bike and then like you know like small lumps of things I wouldn't like pre hop then so I've been working on
pre hopping like like pre hopping and then like you know like learning on the back of it I would normally just yeah so sick but working on these things still is so cool like just literally like said that and yet you've hit some of the biggest jumps in the world at hard line yeah yeah yeah but like but you mean speed technique yeah and I think like someone that does that it's so so impressive yeah sorry to drop no so good I think someone that does that very good is look a sure yeah he's really good like I dozed kind of stuff like just like it's almost like biscross kind of stuff isn't he like just like rollers and like and like jumps and carry carried out speed on like bike park like kind of sections increasingly important in every race track pretty much there's a section where you've got carried loads and loads and I feel I feel like I improved so much if that looked like on my splits on like the tracks like now I improved so much on on that like on that specific splits that bike park splits I improved the law and I'm
on par with the guys but because we like we did this work like BK would like stop on a section and get slow motion video of me and then guys low motion I would guys low motion video of him and then see what he was doing so I could like you know like copy try to copy and like just work in line line now like I'm like every bit that I see off track I'm like I'm managed to pre hop stuff now like like easily yeah and yeah it's just time free time there because like before I would just like let's say this is this example on the on the racetrack adevi there is just like uh so like a little drop into a right hand there but like with the speed we're coming if you don't pre hop which was why would do it we're just coming to it and just like let the bike go down I would lend on the berm and then I lose all my speed because it's quite a high drop but like now I can pre hop it and lend on the backside of it and then like carry almost speed around the corner you know
so it makes like such a difference but then you're just applying that like you ever bit you can and then yeah and then like the jumps as well I trying to work on that and stuff I still not great at the jumping like still still have that weird technique but again hardline you need to highlight that you ride hardline but yeah okay I mean I I can jump it but like my technique is is this humble approach I mean it's really unique on a team sport you'd be like um considered coachable but do you think it's something about being Brazilian do you think this being able to just look at yourself like it like dude you're really fast you're literally just nothing on the top tent in the world and speed and then to be able to be like I'm not good at jumping it's quite rare though if you can you must be able to look around your competitors and be like yeah a lot of these people wouldn't be saying I'm not good at this they're saying I'm the shit like do you think it's a Brazilian thing we kind of talked about it on camera so yeah yeah no no I know what you try and say but I don't think sorry but I don't think this this this this example this example like kind of
yes suits to this I think because like if you see like all the motorcars riders they all have like coaches doing it like the larynxes like everyone is like getting told and that's the way our sports should be and maybe yeah you're right like maybe it's it's not but I'm pretty sure like like like bruny all like the top of guys are getting like people telling them like like how to do and stuff then stuff like that so I don't I think it's like it's more about like a rider wanting to improve and like trying to do their best so like they need to look at what like the negatives and what they're not doing great to improve and like do best but like yeah like like what you were saying is like the Brazilian like how they are like very friendly and very very like approachable with like they are cool they know like like yeah like I think that's more like like a coo coo coo coo coo true thing like well like at least the ones you know it they came life from like a kind of poor
background let's say it like you were telling me that like Ronaldo Cruz like we're like you were really good friends with him because he was like really cool and like approachable guy he came from like a poor background so so did I so like we kind of appreciate things and like we know how hard is to and especially like for Brazilian like they know how hard is to be in Europe and like be racing and doing all that stuff so they like appreciate things a lot more so like they are like and like just in general like try to be like nice people you know like that's the manners that you've been teached when you are a kid because your parents is struggling a lot so they teach you like good manners and stuff and then I don't know I can be wrong but like if you like born a bit like off on a when a gold platter let's say like reaching stuff like your parents are not really like teaching you that kind of stuff and then yeah that's when you're turning to like a bit of I think it's so interesting to be like aware of that as well because I think you could easily have got it sounds like imposter syndrome with all this stuff and just feel like you don't not that you
don't deserve it but culturally it's quite different to what you kind of used to have in and what other people from your country used to have in yeah yeah I think like I am such a privileged I'm doing such a privileged thing like how many Brazilian downhills Brazilian races had been on a factor team you know do you know how many well not one is it yeah yeah it's like well tune out with me yeah like he was like back in the 2000s like I think you remember talking about that yeah Markov like yeah he was like on that global team you know the one that was that had like the fastest people from the continent each continent right the one that was orange and like it was like marching right away that was like Greg was on that team and stuff yeah yeah so he was on that team for like two years of think and then he went into that the MSC Marxist team so like he managed to get two second places podiums in a word cup yeah so for me to to break that
record as he's doing so but like yeah he was like our best Brazilian but like he did the same thing like left everything his parents sold sold everything in Brazil to move to Europe to chase the dream you know so it's like it's really hard like if there is only two person that managed to make it it just shows how how hard it is because there is not not much like there's so so many more like how many UK people there is in the circuit so many like Americans like there's a lot of people like from from Europe you know so it's just like like easier and more accessible yeah then for us out there um it's really interesting as well because if you imagine it's hard to I can't imagine the sport not having examples with people from the UK in because growing up we had PT Warner we had all of these like super heroes to look up to yeah I'm trying to think of a sport
that didn't have it and actually basketball as a as a kid we didn't really have like a UK guy there was like John and Michi I think got drafted but they weren't like UK guys in the NBA and so it's very different feeling to being like there's Steve Pete on how to do this especially for you he's from Sheffield like dude you had like yeah the biggest thing in mountain biking was literally from where you're from and I kept asking him for a chance yeah no that's that's totally right because like the only reason I probably meet I am here today is because like Mark of like kind of created that puff you know yeah he's that did that so like in a way like we kind of knew that was like the route to do it you know yeah you know what I mean like he did it and then like okay he did it he managed to to to to do that well doing that so like my parents kind of did the same thing different but the same thing and then but we like growing up
always looked up to him you know looked up like like he's he's the man he's he's the goal of like our sport is it cool to think there's loads of mini rogers in Brazil now looking what you're doing and that are going as fast as I can and pushing to be the next yeah yeah for sure like obviously like now like I say that everyone is like looking up to me and like I probably like realizing the dream of so many people in Brazil and that's why you get like the other comments and they are so passionate about because there's is not every day that someone managed to do like what I did you know so like they they know how hard it is and they appreciate so much so they they tried to show the love like with comments and stuff supporting you know which is really cool but he also comes like a responsibility now as well as you know what I mean like because like there's kids and everyone like looking up to me like when I went now for National Champions it was crazy like kind of felt like BK in the airport and everyone like asking for pictures and stuff yeah it was like really really
cool like and yeah it was cool just like I also to go out there and that was one of the reasons I obviously you want to go for the title for the points and never female I also wanted to go to like like I don't know like just to like people like to see me and like you know like it kind of grows this poor a bit more as well like all the kids like pushing themselves more they all like trying to beat me and stuff like that and like it elevates this poor as well in a way which is yeah which is really really cool yeah I've got a request can you if you could tell a kid one thing something just to motivate them could you say it but in vertigues yeah down the camera nah I'm talking so long in English now it's gonna be high yeah yeah like it's gonna be like English
don't think it's wrong here in vertigues wow don't think the first thing comes to my mind is like Ertán Senna when he's talking like he's like he's like speeches and like motivation and speech so I'll try to cook something here nice sports or you're trying to follow this day right it's a tough day but if there's something in life that I learned and never existed and always believe in it I believe in your potential work hard hard to give your best and if you believe in it never exist by that cert meleza de mvm to yes see it was good oh you need to translate that that got me hyped so sick I got me hot so sick I got like a couple of bits never give up I think never never give up on work hard
is there some of that in there never yeah yeah yeah like yeah I know that that was a good one yeah you know what I mean insane yeah like pretty much pretty much these guys suck have you not pretty much let never give up like work hard and trust just like trust and like kind of trust the process and it will have a sick what a great way to end this conversation and amazing just to catch up with you and see you and all this stuff that's happening made you deserve it it's insane thanks for you I can't afford the rest of the season thank you everyone thanks guys thanks how do you say goodbye how do you say like and subscribe and uh what you guys what you guys are you see now I don't know subscribe I think you subscribe you know could you subscribe funny thing make roach speaking more you guys just right no thanks guys thank you there yeah appreciate being here again turning to our into a kind of regular regular yeah
