Ronald Acuña Sparks Atlanta Braves to MASSIVE Series Split Against Philadelphia Phillies

1:04the biggest moment of the year on Sunday's big comeback win. A lot to discuss on today's episode of Lockdown Braves also set you up for the upcoming series against the race back home. Let's start with that four game set in filly. Like I said, the biggest series of the year. This is what it all came down to for the in a least at least is what's going to happen over these next seven games. It started with the four game set in Philadelphia. We talked about it coming into the weekend with where the braves were four games up coming in. You really, obviously you want to win sweep. You want to win every game. But as long as the braves came away with a split and nothing less than that, it felt like it was going to be a win of a weekend. The Phillies had to win this series. If they wanted any shot of the NLEs and I shouldn't say any shot. There's still plenty of time left. But it really would have helped them out a lot if they were able to win. So for the braves to just get a split, take four more games off the calendar and still retain your lead in the division.

2:05It's huge. Braves won games one and three. We talked about that coming in. The Chris sale Tyler Malley games. Those are big because it's likely going to be your one two starters in the post season. So be able to win those two games. Those of those guys pitched fantastic. That gives Bravesans or should gives Bravesans a lot of confidence as far as your post season rotation goes. And again, just a great series overall for the Atlanta Braves. Getting a series win would have gone a huge way in terms of putting the NLEs conversation to bed. But to go to Philly with the way the offense had been playing and still has been playing and get a split was just fine. And not only that, but perhaps even bigger by getting those two wins against the Philly's, the Braves have now clinched the season series against them. And that means that if the two teams finished tied with the same record, the Braves would win the division similar to a belief was 2024. Braves and Mets, you know, finished with the tide, but the Braves had the tiebreaker.

3:08So when you look at the standings right now and you see that the Braves have a four game lead. They really have a five game lead because of that tiebreaker. And that's why it's so huge winning and clinching that series season series, getting that taken care of in Philadelphia. And Ed's has been the case in this post season series that are playing lately, playing the Yankees at Diamondbacks of Brewers. All these good teams, every game was tight. The last two games were decided by one run, one to the Braves one, one to the Philly's one. You had a game decided by two runs on Saturday. I believe it was. And then you had a three run game on Friday, the largest spread in any of the games, but these were all very tight, you know, back and forth ball games. But the story of the weekend, the big story of the weekend coming out is Ron Akuny Jr. And his just statement weekend against a rival and perhaps the biggest series of the year, Ronald goes six for 15. He has a double two home runs. He only scored two runs on the homeers that he hit, but Drovein five, including four

4:11of the five runs at the Braves scored and Sundays come back when walked one time, only struck out twice against some really great pitching. I think it's very encouraging. Getting on that four scene fastball like we've talked about and something that he's really done a better job of in this hot stretch. And you look at this now over the last 10 games for Ronald 17 for 37. That's a 459 batting average, three doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored, 10 runs driven in five walks to seven strikeouts and just squaring up everything and hitting the four Seamer, which was really what he was missing. There's been some chase. There's been some swing and miss that's concerning. We talked about that as well when we did a deep dive on the struggles for Ronald, but really the biggest thing has has been the struggles with the four scene fastball, particularly up in the zone. And you saw the Phillies attacking him with that as all teams have been doing and probably will continue to do because how else are you really going to get Acunia out with really just been the four Seamer? He's been hitting everything else and he's gone six for 12 against four Seamers in his

5:14last nine games entering Monday's game. Monday's game not included. He was six for 12 against four Seamers since he set out that game, the finale against the Dodgers. In the home run that he hit on Sunday was he had seen seven straight four Seamers. A lot of them up in the zone, fouled some of them off, some tough ones off. And then he got one at a hundred and one miles per hour that was up in a way and it just amazes me the power and ability he has to go take that pitch that is one oh one up in a way on the black. And he's able to just crush that out to left field. That's why that's why pictures come inside on him because when he gets extended like that and you can cover everything on the outer half of the plate. That is why there are so many brushback pitches on Akunya because you have got to get the ball in on him. You leave one out there like that, especially when he's as locked in as he is right now and it's going to go a long, long way and he has some moonshots in the series.

6:15The one off Zach Wheeler, he was a hanging sweeper. He just absolutely destroyed that. He is on one right now and it is fun to see. And you look at how the numbers have gone. His batting average has jumped from 228 on August 6th to 253 after Monday's game. His slugging has jumped 40 points. His OPS is now up to 792 4th best on the team out of the regulars and he's not that far from overtaking both Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris. It can happen that quickly. His WRC plus is up to 120. It was 103 when he set out that final game against the Dodgers. So he's risen at almost 20 points. And the last 10 games here. Again, that's why he just can't give up on a talent like Ronald. When he is on, he is the best player in baseball and he can carry a team just like he did in Sundays when were he drove in four of the five runs. He is capable of doing that. Had another great catch. The catch probability on it was only 5%.

7:16I didn't seem that difficult, but still he's been making some great plays on defense too. Now we got to get to the controversy of the weekend. If you want to call it that and really I blame this all on the Philadelphia media trying to create something where there wasn't anything. And it's really a bunch of to do about nothing. But you got a Phillies reporter lacking views this month trying to get clicks and kudos to him because he's gotten the clicks. He's gotten the attention. He got he she I don't know who asked the question got what they wanted. And it just took off. Hands are heated in the comments section and like that's healthy for the rivalry. Certainly and you saw after those quote unquote comments from Zach Wheeler, which if you watch the whole thing there again, it was really much to do about nothing. But a coon you responded on Sunday and he took his time even more rounding the bases. Look what a coon you did on Saturday's home run off Wheeler, which again was a moon shot.

8:18Like you have to admire that one a little bit or you don't have to, but a guy like Ronald was certainly going to. But all the other stuff going around the bases, you know, flapping the wings, a little step that he does before third base. He's been doing that for years. It's not like it's anything brand new. And every player does the little bird flapping motion to the bullpen. That's not specific to Ronald Riley did it on his home. Or everybody does it on the team does it. It was a huge nothing burger until that reporter desperate for clicks. He decided to ask Zach Wheeler his thoughts on it, knowing Zach Wheeler and just kind of the player he is that he maybe would get a quote out of it. And that's what he did. He got a quote he chopped it up. So you get the section just where Wheeler seems to be a little bit upset by it. You asked mindingly about it, Chorber, all of this and all their answers were great. They don't care and they don't. But now we have to because you asked, asked the question.

9:18Now again, the celebration on Sunday was different. And it should be it was a three run home run in the eighth inning in a huge series to tie the game after reading all of those comments. It should be a little bit different. Now maybe the card call thing was a little over the top and look, I don't love everything that Ronald does, but I do love Ronald and he is a fun player. And if that's how he wants to take it, he wants to take on the villain that is quite fine. But that's also the game today with the show boating and all of that. Whatever you want to call it, that is the game today. Even Don Mattingley, old school Don Mattingley said, just you deal with it. That is the game today. You deal with it and move on. You don't like it. Pitch better. I think that's a von Grissom quote there. And look, I would say the same thing to Fuentes after he gave up the big home run to Schorber on Monday. And look, Schorber, I was being sarcastic on social media, a lot of fans, especially Philly's fans didn't get it. Schorber didn't do anything crazy, but I mean, he did sit there and watch it for a second.

10:18He flipped the bat. Who cares? It was a huge home run for Kyle Schorber. Now cool. I'm back to back days. You see two of the best in the game. Akunyan Schorber come up with big hits like that. Now I hate that Schorber did it. But again, that is the game. Those were huge moments. And you want to sit there and celebrate it a little bit. You just, that's it. That is today's game, whether you like it or not. And Ronald playing that villain role. Look, we made Harper the villain for years in Atlanta. I don't always agree with it at time. I don't care one way or the other. But Braves fans like to move rice Harper for whatever reason because he drug his foot across an eight 20 years ago. I don't get it, but it's fun. It makes the rivalry fun. And now you got Akunyan's a villain. It makes the rivalry fun again. What bugs me though? Are the Braves fans who hate Akunyan because of this? And those same fans, a lot of them are the same fans who admired and loved Chipper for playing the villain role with the meds. Chipper named a kid after Shay Stadium, after the meds stadium, like Chipper played into

11:24that villain role. But those same fans are going to hate Akunyan for it. And just doesn't make sense. And if you are one of those people, and I'm sure you're not because you're a listener of this podcast and we have all rational people listening to this podcast. But if you're one of those people that just hates Akunyan because of his antics, because of the villain role that he takes on with the Phillies, but you're somebody that loves an admirer's Chipper for doing that, you should probably pause and think about that one for a second and why that is the case. Either way, it was a great weekend in my book. I get what I love to get the win, but with the position of the race we're in on the road, get a split like that, take four games off the schedule, didn't allow them to gain any ground. And you actually game a game, gained a game by clinching the season series. Akunyan caught fire, continues to catch fire. The pitching staff proved that it was capable of handling that atmosphere. I thought overall it was a win of a weekend for the Atlanta Braves. I went up a four game series against the Phillies, but you got to get a right back after

12:24it. He got the race coming up and then you got the Phillies again. But before we get into that, we'll talk about the pitching in this series, which like I said, I thought did it's part except for marketing Perez and we'll get into why on that and everything helps that happened over the weekend next. 14:28And it has been a grind for Ronald through all of the injuries, the struggles with the four seamers, but he loves this game and he works hard at it. Just take a look at the breeze starting pitching from the weekend, the four game series against the Phillies starting with Chris sale on Friday night, six innings, six hits, one walk, two on run, seven strikeouts, 103 pitches. And like he just does it again, he pitches against another team stays. He steps up to the challenge gives his his team a chance. And he wasn't even close to his best in this one and gives give some credit to the Phillies fighters for making them work, but he just didn't have his best stuff. And he still went six innings and only give up to earn.

15:30He was able to push through it, out dual Christopher Sanchez and get the win. And I luckily have to do it again next Friday back at home against Christopher Sanchez. But you have to win these Chris sale starts the rest of the way. He has been doing his part all year long, giving you a chance to get some of the best pictures in the game. I mean, he has gone up against Sanchez, there's a rousky, everybody that you were going to be facing in a game one scenario in the post season. And he has answered the call every single time. The offense just has to do their part and they did in Fridays win over the Phillies. Now on Saturday, Marty Red struggle, last of just three and two thirds innings, seven hits or walks or earn runs, three strikeouts on 84 pitches. Overall his season, ERA is still just 3.25, which is incredible. And then after the game that he felt like the command issues were influenced by the extra rest. He hadn't pitched in seven days. And I think the two previous starts were also about a week apart.

16:30And I've made this point about elder you look at the numbers on elder, they are drastically different on regular rest versus extra rest. And they're much better on regular rest. And I made this point about elder and I guess you can make it about Marpteen Perez too for guys who aren't necessarily reliant on effort, but are more so reliant on movement and command, which is what elder and Marpteen Perez are giving them extra rest just makes them extra rusty. And so I can see that being a valid excuse for both of those guys when they're getting that extra rest and that you're not able to keep that command and that you that you have you know, going every five days like you're used to doing. So it is an excuse. I know Braiths fans don't want to hear it and it's not fun, but I do think there is some validity to it for guys like elder and press for guy like Chris sale who is pitching with

17:31a lot of effort. He's throwing high velocity stuff. He's obviously just throwing a lot of intense innings in the games that he's having to pitch against other teams aces. I think it makes sense for him to get a couple of extra days off when you can do it. But for guys like elder and Perez who really are reliant on movement and feel for their pitches and command, I think the more time in between starts for them, the more opportunity you have to kind of lose that and have to it might take some time to gain it back. And you're throwing bullpins in between and all that, but it's not the same when you're out there on the mound in game action. On Sunday, Tyler Maligho six innings, four hits, one walk, no earned runs, three strike outs. Now he did go up to unearned runs in the first inning, but then pressed on after that, kept them off the board the next five innings and just continues to be tremendous for the Atlanta Braves and is easily your game to starter. And I think your game three starter pitched on Monday, Grant home six innings, three hits,

18:33two walks, no earn run, six strike outs on 89 pitches. And now you look at four of his last seven starts. He's thrown six scoreless innings. One of those starts was cut short due to rain where he had been perfect through three innings. And I hate to take too much or put too much dock into Monday's effort, but it is, it is what it is, but neither offense seemed awake in Monday's game. It was just who was going to run into one first and Shorba ran into one. But Grant home's had 17 whiffs in a 39% whip rate on Monday. Now he did give up 10 hard hit balls and had an average average x velocity against of 98.7. The start just doesn't make sense. You're giving up that much hard contact. Now of course, it's not just about hard contact. It has to be a good launch angles too, but still that's a lot of hard hit balls. It's also a lot of swing and miss. So look, don't know what to make necessarily of Grant home's, but I still think he is your third most reliable starter right now. And I can change over the next three weeks, but at the post season started the day, I

19:37think I'm putting Grant home's out there in a game three situation. And you just have to be ready and no going in if you run into trouble that second or third time through, you got to have somebody ready and you got to be able to pull, pull the plug quickly with Grant home's if he starts to struggle that second and third time through. But he has proven for the most part this year that he can give you five, six solid innings out there. And I definitely think that he is third in the pecking order right now. As far as the bull pin, Fountess was amazing on Friday. He made the mistake to Shorber on Sunday that lost the game, but outside of that was good. Overall, he pitched four innings in this series. He gave up one run on that one hit, the home run that he gave up to Shorber. A glaci has picked up a couple of saves in the series in the games of the Braves one. Though he was able to avoid the top of the lineup and both of those, but still he got it done. And then, Dylan Lee had a clean inning. Locations were still awful though. You go back and look at the locations in that inning. I don't think you threw a pitch in the strike zone to bomb, which, you know, if you can

20:41get a guy out without having to do that great, there's a harper at bat. I think everything was over the middle of the plate and Harper just couldn't find it, which maybe speaks to the stuff. I don't know, but I still think that there are some command issues with it. I'm not fully back to trusting Dylan Lee at the moment after just one clean outing where it didn't look like he was all that sharp and maybe just more lucky than good on that day. Dylan. Had a rough one on Sunday. Give a pair of home runs at what thought put the game away for the Phillies. So that's a bit unfortunate because if you can't trust Dylan Lee and Dodd is your next best lefty that you might have to use against the top of the teams order like that, whether you're facing the Phillies and you got Schorver and Arise and Harper or you're facing the Dodgers and their great lefties and Tony and Freeman. That's a bit concerning. If you don't have a lefty that you can trust. So I would like to see Dodd, you know, get another shot at it. Maybe this upcoming weekend against the Phillies and hopefully come away with a better result. Ray Kerr and Brent Souter, they were great on Saturday, tossing four and a third shutout.

21:44Innings, given the offense a chance to try and come back, they continue to do a really good job in those low leverage situations where you're out of it, but they're able to come in, give the bullpen some innings, save your bullpen so that you could go for it in that Sunday game and we're able to get the win. So really like what we've seen at the bottom of our bullpen right now, guys like Kerr, Madero's, even Ellie as a Hernandez the other day had had three big innings and then obviously Brent Souter, really like what they're able to do in those lower leverage situations and saving the bullpen, but still giving you a chance to win. Overall thought it was a bit of a mixed bag for the bullpen, but good results. Just three runs allowed in 12 and the third innings and usually look at the series overall. No stolen base attempts in this series. Somebody double checked me on that one. I double checked myself, but no stolen bases. Maybe the braze were scared of JT who still has elite pop time. They also have base two lefty starters. Those are harder to run on, but neither team attempted a stolen base in the series, which is just kind of crazy.

22:45Braze were four for 20 with runners in scoring position, not great. Know it bats with a runner in scoring position on Sunday when Jesus Lusardo, through a complete game shut out, allowing just two hits in a walk, which 12 strikeouts. Billies were just three for 28 with runners in scoring position, which when that happens to the team against you, you say great pitching by the braze, being able to get out of those situations. Billies hit five homeers, braves it for, it's a really tight series. They're two two good teams. They're both evenly matched. They split the series and a lot of these numbers are pretty even to still some things. I would like to see cleaned up, particularly in in Saturday's game or Sunday's game should have been a lot easier if not for the errors or the error in the first inning. Pictures also have to do a better job of picking up their teammates when that stuff happens. The error was a big reason for the unearned runs on Sunday, but that inning started with a walk by Tyler Malie. Walked the first batter of the game and then he gave up a two out hit. He could have got out of that inning, only giving up the one, but he gives up a two out hit to Alec Bome. There was a play in the series where Ronald slipped and a runner was able to advance the

23:47second to third. Olsen also kind of stumbled on a play where he might have been able to cut down the runner at home. Little things and not a lot of them, but those things do add up and can be huge things come postseason time. As far as some other standouts, Marie Soutobon, Drig Ball, when they both had a pair of multi-hit games in the series, Riley had a home run and the huge go ahead hit off of Yo-On to Ran in the ninth inning, a splitter that was middle middle, but the fact that he was able to stay on that and drive it to a right center, somewhat right center is very encouraging for Austin Rally. So there's some of your other notes from the weekend. Next we'll turn our attention very quickly to the raise before the brave take on the Phillies again, this upcoming weekend, but their head back home got three against the raise. We're getting to the array series a little bit of news to update you on Bryse elders knee

26:55as apparently still bothering him. So he's not going to start for at least another week, but we're apparently not going to put him on the ender list and he'll be available out of the moment kind of a weird situation for Bryse elder. Again, don't want to speculate here. It feels like maybe a situation where they got a lot of starters. Maybe they don't trust Bryse elder as much right now and they want to give him a break. Again, why not just put him on the ender list? You can put people on the ender list or pretty much anything, especially if he actually has an injury. I don't know. Kind of a kind of a weird situation here for Bryse elder. We'll see what happens with him down the stretch, which you got Ronaldo Lopez. He's expected to come back this week and start in the middle game of that raised series and then Robert Sforres was scheduled to set throw a 25 pitch bullpen session on Monday. Not saying that he didn't. We just didn't hear about it. Obviously the braze were on the road. I'm sure we'll get an update on that Tuesday, but hopefully he did and hopefully that went well and he can continue to ramp up and get back. Hopefully before the season ends and can look like Robert Sforres. That would be a huge boost to this bullpen.

27:55Now, next the Atlanta braze will be taking on the Tampa Bay race who are currently the leader in the A.L. East at 85 and 58 overall on the season. They're right there, record wise, with the Atlanta braze plus 47 run differential. They've been there pretty much all year to the top of the East. They've been a pretty steady team. They're six and four in their last 10 games. They did lose their last one that they played, which was against the Rangers on Sunday. They were off on Monday. So they'll be fresh coming into this. That was a four game setting against the Rangers that they split. I played the Metz before that and lost that series actually, but swept the Pondraise before that. So a really good team. Obviously, they're always in the mix, just a really good brand organization there. So it's going to be a tough series for the Atlanta braze playing the best team record wise in the American League by a couple of games too. I mean, the Yankees are the second best team record wise in the American League and they're obviously in the same division. In fact, the three best records in the American League are all in the A.L. East and the

28:56Razer winning that division. So that says a lot about that team. So it's going to be a tough challenge. Look at who their hot hitters are coming into the series. Jonathan O'Ronda, junior Caminero, Yondi Diaz, those are the guys you just cannot let beat you, especially Caminero with his 40 home run power. And then Chandler Simpson hitting 314 this year and is really, really fast. He had stolen number of bases that maybe you thought he would. I mean, he has 39 on the year, but he's also been caught 14 times. But still he has the sixth most hits in all baseball this season. So he is finding ways to get on base and then when he does, again, he's really, really fast not even just for the stolen bases, but just, you know, he can score quickly on of all that shot in the gap. And then watch out for Jorge Mateo in the revenge game as well as he's with the race right now. As far as their bullpen, they always have an assortment of good arms that you've never heard of. Tyler Wells and Brian Baker have been getting a lot of the saves lately. I'm kind of imagining unless you are really good in the fantasy baseball, did you probably

29:57never heard of either those guys, not a ton of lefties though, which could be a good thing for the Atlanta Braves. You look at the pitching matchups in this series, AJ Smith-Shawver against Freddie Peralta. It's obviously been a struggle for AJ Smith-Shawver as he's been called up to the big leagues. Praise were really open that he could take off and become a postseason starter. We know he's got the stuff, but we haven't seen him put it together yet coming back from Tommy John's surgery. And then Freddie Peralta, just a disastrous year with the Metz. And a couple of rough starts after coming over to Tampa Bay, but his last two have been really, really good. So he seems locked in in a groove now. Be a tough one here for the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. On Wednesday, you have the return of Ronaldo Lopez going up against Griffin Jacks. He's only thrown seven and two-thirds innings at the big league level since July 28th. And his last start, he only went two and two-thirds innings. He's converted reliever. So you know they're probably not going to push him too much. This might be a short outing for maybe both guys. We'll see how Raylo does making his first start back. And then in the finale, you got Martin Perez versus Nick Martinez.

30:59Nick Martinez, one of the best pitchers in the first half of the season, still has been good, but kind of mixed back here lately for him. And then we talked about Martin Perez, hopefully more on regular rest. Perez can get back on track. Again, he has been one of the unsung heroes, if not the unsung hero for the Braves this year with what he has done and how great he has been. So I'd love to see him get going in the finale against the race. You do miss Drew Rasmussen, who's the race best starter in this series. So that is good luck for the Atlanta Braves. But again, a tough matchup. It's a really good race team. Don't let Kim and Arrow beat you. Hopefully, be able to get some good starts out of this. Again, I got some questions from the rotation in this one with AJ Smith-Shawar, Raylo, and then Perez coming off. His last outing. Don't have a ton of confidence in the starters in this one. I would love to see the offense get going in this series and gear up for another trip against the or another matchup against the Phillies this weekend. But you are back home in Atlanta for six more big games and this tough stretch that the
