Rookwood Cemetery opens its gates to the public

The remains of a million souls lie here. Rookwood, Sydney's necropolis, city of the dead. Sharing one of its secrets, with a rare look inside the Fraser Mausoleum. Fraser Mausoleum is unique. There's nothing like it in Australia. Built by politician, businessman John Fraser, now vacant, but once a resting place for six family members. It's undergone millions in restoration, and after 132 years the building's bones are still perfect. All the walls are still plum, everything's level and square. There are no cracks. Rookwood is alive with history. The risk at King William Arnett has been here since 1901.

1:01Department store giant David Jones, a resident for over 150 years. Getting here meant the funeral train, a 20k trip arriving at Rookwood after leaving more tree station, not far from central. The public would travel for one shillings, the mourners would travel for family for one shilling and the deceased would travel free. From mushroom coffins to the works of the crematorium, Rookwood is having an open day tomorrow, throwing open the gates for all prospective new residents.
