I'm Zachary Smith that is Alan Saunders on Zachary Drive. How are we doing? I'm going to give him a hello of these in season Wednesday. Just leave him practice. This is where it's at. This is this is the good place. It's one good afternoon drive. Yeah. Yeah, in season the NFL season does kick off tonight. I know you're saying that only I mean primarily because for the Steelers that is obviously first week of radio season practices, lean to week one, but the NFL season literally kicks off tonight with the New England Patriots in Seattle, Seahawks opening up the season, which still feels so weird to say out of Wednesday.

1:04But it is what it is Melbourne, Australia. Did you see the NBC commercials with Mike Turekow and the camel? No, from the old guy co-car insurance commercial where he goes. My Mike, my Mike with Danes, but the camel is asking Mike Turekow what day the NFL season starts. It's very good. Very fitting. Yeah, I had to kind of remind myself that was a Wednesday, not a Thursday, a few times, but. I'm not going to say line up right now. Yeah, don't forget. Hey, you know what, while we're on this topic, because I don't know where else I'd work it in Brooklyn did ask if we play fantasy football at all. And if so, if we have any Steelers on any of our rosters. Yeah, I do. I mean like, oh, geez, I don't know. One league fell apart this year. Very sad about that. It was by far the sickleist of all of my fantasy football leagues. And I'm sad that it's gone. But I'm in. I think for fantasy leagues.

2:07Something like that. I do have. We're in one together now this year, by the way. I know people in the comments, we very jealous of this, but we are in a league with some of our our favorite folks from the Twitter sphere. I believe the league name is Alan Saunders fan club. My name is Saunders umbrella. I do like that. I think I have. I'm pretty sure I've jailed and learned in multiple leagues. I think that's the one Steelers player that I really. I've kind of put my flag down and like I like his value versus the ADP. But you probably got to be in a pretty deep league or a league that starts two tight ends. Yeah, or that to matter. Yeah, I have him only in one league and it's a dynasty and my number one tight in his trademark bride. So like he's.

3:09Sorry, Pat, you know, you know how I feel about your pal, but. I think it's going to be the playing time ain't coming unless injury happens or by. My wife drafted him and her leg now she isn't a league that is all women. And I do not help her at all. And she knows. Basically nothing about football. And she does quite well, which I was just saying. Yeah, with very March madness like. I know what she did draft him and then she told me that I need to tell him that he had to do well because he's on. Her team. I've not passed that mental along yet. I will I will at some point. Okay, yeah, I know he he loves when people bring up them being on. Or him being on their fancy football rosters. I can tell you from experience. Yeah, I have one share of Jalen Warren. I have one share of detail met cap. I have a share of Pat Fryer. I'm in six different leagues.

4:09I should mention that. And then I have a dynasty league every year. There's a rookie draft in there's five slots in the rookie draft. So you have five draft picks every year. So I actually have a couple shares in this deeper dynasty league of drew out. Don't know if that will ever come to fruition. If I'll ever use them, but he is currently on those rosters. You got to throw a dart. It's like the third or fourth round of this rookie draft. I just why not potentially he could end up being a core starting quarterback at some point. So minus will throw a dart at him. Oh, you know, I have a Steelers defense in a lead. As well. Yeah, I would say that I am probably. Football is back and so are the predictions who makes the playoffs who wins their division who takes home the title on call. Like here's the thing I'm in drafts with a lot of Steelers fans for the most part. I feel like I'm usually less likely to take Steelers. Then. To be a little slightly less optimistic this time of year about the team in general, although specifically I think war is very undervalued.

6:27I don't think that's fair. Steelers fans tend to I mean I guess you to look at it both ways because I mean if our YouTube comments are any indication some of them might not be drafting players at all. So they're over drafting or under drafting because they don't see any value in them. But one one side of the coin regardless. Anyways, all right let's move off of that. We appreciate question. Brooklyn good luck in your fancy football leads this year. I'll say leach as it might be plural. Let's talk about what we got going on today. No Mike McCarthy spoke a little bit. I've been watching this at a curiosity very curiously. I think it's a little bit more interesting. I think it's a little bit more interesting. The right tackle spot because I thought it was interesting with Mike McCarthy leaving the door open a little bit last week. We talked about the depth chart. It wasn't or it was just Dylan Cook as the number one right tackle a little bit of a clip that you pointed out today.

7:28What would you say as we sit here on Wednesday that the signs are at least pointing to Dylan cook opening up as this team starter. Yeah, I thought there was a chance to max a hon of sure would use these two three weeks to get in there. But I feel like it was going to happen and what happened by now Mike McCarthy said today that he really likes to have all five guys practicing together. And while I do not see a team drill today, nor will I until may the individual drill certainly suggested that Dylan kept his starting right tackle. I don't know that that's going to be the case forever. I don't think they will hesitate to make a move, but I do think man, I think stage fans have forgotten how dumb get Dylan Cook was last year. I don't know like some of the conversations I found myself in on Twitter. I feel like taking crazy pills like Dylan Cook last year was like one of the best performances by a stealers chocolate and the last half a decade like that.

8:37Do you think he's better though? Do you think he's better though it left tackle than it right tackle? Are you think he's pretty even. I don't think there's a big difference. I mean, I think I would. The father's trying to maximize cook. I would play him on the left side. I just think that's because he's a better pass blocker than a run blocker. That's usually the way you go about things. Very similar with a Dan Moore where like if you're building the line around that guy. Yeah, playing on the left. That doesn't necessarily mean that always makes sense to do. Yeah, if you're building the line around that. I mean, listen, nothing. These are NFL players. So not to talk poorly about them. But if that's the best that you got along the offensive line, you're talking about building around them. I mean, yeah, I mean, yeah, like Dylan Cook is probably best suited to be left tackle. I also strongly believe that your best offensive lineman should be your left tackle no matter where they've played before and no matter where they're passed positions.

9:43Like if all of the Steelers guards and tackles tomorrow were in a horrific bus accident all the way down to the practice squad and they had to sign nine new guys from the street to play in somebody's game. Zach Frazier should be playing left tackle this week because like that's the best lineman you've got. Like that's how it should always work. I don't think it'll certainly is not that. So yeah, I mean, do I think he'll do as well at right time? I don't think he'll do worse. I just don't think that's really his best position. Yeah, I just wondered if that was maybe where some of the seemingly disrespect your under rating of Dylan Cook was coming from his last year that was obviously left tackle that he put the pretty good table. I mean, I was a lot out of nine reps in the preseason too. I mean, I used to find most of the time we love them. Yeah, I don't see it's almost I don't have a problem with Dylan Cook. I think he's a serviceable tackle. Like I don't have an issue with that in a vacuum.

10:44But don't get me wrong. You know, you invest the first round picking a guy as a fan. I want that guy to be on the field as soon as possible when I say as soon as possible with the caveat that once he's ready. I want to throw him to the wolves the why they're and I want him to also have to earn it. So there's some obvious caveats within that. But as soon as Maxi Hanachur is ready to go. I would like to see him take that job and I don't know where you're at with it if you were trying to like pinpoint it. But like the first opportunity that I see is they got a week for that Thursday night game against Cleveland. So then you'll have a mini buy before coming home to play the Colts. That was the first spot that I was looking at. Yeah, I mean, I don't think Max, especially given the neck injury is the kind of player that needs to play this year. Like it's his sixth year ever playing football and he just missed three weeks with an injury. I feel like playing him now would be rushing things and I don't think Dylan Cook is anywhere near bad enough that you need to rush things.

11:51The real question is so tomorrow is going to be a practice in pods. Probably very few of those left after that. And so how much growth can Maxi Hanachur really do after tomorrow? I don't know. It's tough to answer. Like how much better is he going to get? You know, playing poddy cake. I don't know. Like that's that's tough for me to answer. I have a story on Max and the hopper. And one of the things I'm waiting for to write that story is that I want to talk to some older line about that process. And see what they think. So stay tuned. That's why I can answer. The last thing that I'll say on this before we transition to something else is you don't want to like compound the draft pit either, but because the thing that I was thinking about is the feel like not you.

13:02But from an organizational standpoint, or is the fan base going to feel this way? I mentioned my feelings as a fan. So I'm just curious where they would express feel like he has to see the field early because of the investment. And what else you could have done with that draft pick if that guy wasn't going to contribute early. Now, like I get that thought. But again, at the same time, if it's not in the best interest, both in the short or long term, because he's either not ready to go and would be a liability. If you put him out there, or if you're going to ruin him in some way by doing so, you don't want to compound that like I said. Well, I think if you're worried about that, you don't draft Max Honitory. Yeah. That's not an organization. The reasons to not like the pick was that it was pretty clear that there was a good chance that he was not going to contribute right away. And that he was more of a developmental prospect at the position. I think his further along that I thought it'd be right now, even with the injury.

14:07I think there was a chance to play this year. Now, when they drafted him, I mean, looking at the airs of state tape, it is very up and down. They're certainly good moments. But there's a lot of bad ones too. And that's sort of what the preseason tape revealed as well, although I didn't think there were nearly as many. I mean, one was quite bad, but there were not a ton of like super bad moments on the tape. So you see me as time I started cleaning up the very, very extreme. Are you you're saving the preseason game? You felt that way. Okay. Yeah. And there was one. Well, I don't even know if you got the look out of it was it was gone gone that fast, but the rest of them were. I mean, I think they were pretty respectable reps. And that's really what you can't have. Like, if you tell them like, but you can live through some losses, especially slow ones, especially right tackle where it's happening in front of the quarterback.

15:09What you can't have is oops, look out. Like that's. And I was trying to get Mike McCarthy to talk about that today. And boy, I don't know, man. I just I can't get him to answer a question. I said, I. Oh, great. We got what you thought on a defense. I asked him what he looks for to let him know that he's going off into the line. And any not just max is ready to go. What's what's he looking for? You know, to say, okay, now he's ready, but I mean, only said was about stacking reps, which I. You know, is there a number of reps? I don't know. I can't. Couldn't do an answer. So I guess I find out some point. Yeah. You mentioned not being able to watch team period. Somebody else that did not participate seemingly in that would be Joey Porter Jr. Listed as a limited participants. Was doing seemingly one of every three or so individual drills during that period that was open to you guys.

16:16So yeah, listed on the injury report as a limited participant with the back thing. Mike McCarthy's continued to say he's still in the ramp up period. Alan, it's Wednesday. I mean, we're days away at this point from kickoff against the Atlanta Falcons and contract aside. I know that you brought this up. I guess I wasn't considering this. I was thinking if he's not going to play and I gave this. I didn't say zero percent, but nearly zero percent. I didn't think that it would be due to the back or ramp up period, whatever you might want to call it. I thought it would be him legitimately choosing not to play because of the contract stuff. It almost seems like there's a chance that he doesn't play regardless of how the contract stuff finishes out. Yeah, it's funny because you remember when I asked the crazy back and training camp, if there was any concern about the length of time that Porter, at that point Ramsey had missed in terms of the ringness for week one. And he kind of blew that question off. And it sure seems like, like, Joe Porter is not continuing his holding.

17:17He is taking all the reps. The stillers want him to be taking at this point. They are basically saying he is not ready to play yet. Because of the time he missed with the back injury. And that they are not going to let him do what TJ did in 2021 where his first practice was Wednesday. And he played on Sunday. I mean, they might. But it's not like that is some sort of. TJ, there was never any question. TJ sent his contract. We talked to Mike. That day, Mike said TJ is not like other people. He's going to play. That is not the messaging we're getting right now. The message we're getting right now is hopefully it does a little bit more today than yesterday. And we'll see what happens when we get to Sunday. Very different. I'll tell you all that we need to really consider the fact that the idea that. Do you put a mic not playing this game because the Steelers don't think he's ready to play in it?

18:19When do you feel like there would be a really strong idea? Or do you think that this could be all the way up until Sunday and still not know? Like today would have been. The heaviest day, right? They would have been in. Pads. So tomorrow. Okay. Tomorrow. Okay. So tomorrow, I guess, would be. I think the indication you were. They're going to be in pads. The weeks they're going to be in pads over the first days. Friday's practice is not even really practice. It is just a walk through. Yeah. And Wednesday is a mental practice. And Saturday is mental practice. But of course that's closed. Look, I mean, judging by the amount of. And learning. And the most important. And then for the next. You scathing and. And gamesmanship. We've seen so far in week one. My guess is we'll be finding out if Joey Porter Juner is going to play on Sunday when he walks on. Yeah. Okay. Not sure how I feel about that.

19:19I don't I don't I don't like it to be honest with you. I mean, I think it that might be something that we can all agree on, right? I mean, it's tougher to do. to do your job too. You sure like to know. I mean, I guess you can hide it from Falcons. You know, you can make him, I don't know how much work individual vider-seaters are doing to prepare for individual corners. You know, it's one thing if it's like, you know, a guy who is a big part of a teen's scheme. You know, oh, you make the school's offense men, I have DK Mencalf. I mean, that would significantly change the way a teen might prepare. I don't know that there's any real advantage in making the Falcons wait to know who's going to play corner. But I guess, you know, one of the things that does kind of make this, I think, a little bit easier. There's a lot of point of would be a very natural matchup for Drake London. So no, Dean has been in the division with Drake London his entire career.

20:23And probably knows him pretty well. And the other three guys, I don't have any idea what it like and said start of the other three. Older me days, the key is Malachai branch and. John Dixon. They're all slot guys. They're all little corners. They're all perfect matchups for a 70 cent or little wide receivers. They're all perfect matchups for a 70 cent. So it's really not the end of the world for the Steelers and board doesn't play. So I don't know why the Falcons would be like super sweating it, but. Is this the vibe I get? Is there anything to tell us. They're not going to until they're. Zachary branched by the way of among those Falcons on the injury report listed as a limited participant with a hamstring injury. And this up briefly this also came out within the last hour, along with Kyle Hinton, Billy Bowman, Jr. Brandon Dorless, Zidaria Smith, Michael Pennich Jr.

21:26A full participant, although obviously to a tug of a low name, the starter outside of branch, because he just mentioned him with a receiver. I will say, you know, for a not deep defensive line group, especially because of the past rush guys we know aren't going to be in the fold for them. Dorless and Zidaria Smith, I mean, they're going to need those guys to be able to go. I don't know how serious those injuries are growing in the shoulder respectively, but those will definitely be once the monitor if you're looking at the opposition side here. Yeah, that's shoulder injuries for Smith really jump up the page of me, not a lot of real minor shoulder injuries from past measures usually. I think that's usually the way that goes, no, maybe I know maybe just get some soreness or something, but that's definitely something to watch. Really, Dorless, I think you really underrated the runstopper, really like Tim come out of the draft. Not a ton of passwords to game, but I mean, it's a really good player that will definitely be a blow to the Falcons that I have them like you said that I'm a lot of depth.

22:29All right, back to the Steelers side of things though, cam Hey, we're speaking today talked about a lot of different things, but I mean, well, we're on the topic of Joey just might as well bring up the few things that relate to him. I don't know if I've ever heard cam speak on it before, but clearly he couldn't wait to talk about his disdain for the franchise tag jumped at the opportunity to do so. What did you make to his response and what would your response be to his response? I was going to funny. I mean, the players should hate the franchise, more than anything else, maybe outside of guaranteed, not having guaranteed contract. Like if you had to make a list of things, the players should be mad about the lack of guarantee contracts and the franchise thought should be one and two. And the real funny thing is that like to me, the owners are probably reading these like comments like, oh, this NFL PA vice president hates the franchise tag and the owners are like, please God, tell us anything you want to let us have an 18th game, anything just make up your freaking minds and say what it is you want and we will give it to you.

23:40That's like if the players said tomorrow, no free address tag 18th game, the ownership would take that deal in like the amount of time between the game clock and the big 10 replay clock for the Michigan Western Michigan game. That's that's how long it would take like one millisecond. So then to take that deal and I just think it's like, it's not wrong of cam. I just think to me when like the league is like, please dear God, tell us what you want to be grasping about anything from the union standpoint is kind of ironic. Well, last time they expanded, they got the ability to smoke weed. So you know, it was a pretty massive shift. So let's practice. Yeah. So this is the type of thing that you need to go back more than they got last time. Yeah. For sure. Yes, if this is what they're looking for, this is what they need to, you know, let their rep go and go to back. Not a bad deal. If that's what they get. I mean, the thing is is that it's probably not a winning proposal in terms of like voting from rank and file union members because the number of people for whom this threat of the franchise tag is ever an issue for is actually very low.

24:54And so like in terms of getting the union to vote for it, that's probably not the most winning platform. But like if that's what they want, they could get it. I'm sure of it. Yeah. Yeah, there's not many years where we're even having a conversation about like, is there a candidate on the team for a franchise tag if Joey supported junior is not trying to contract. Maybe on Bud. Oh, Bud. Right. It was Bud. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they use it two times within three years and then not since. But also two times and 10 or 15. Yeah, right. Yeah. So yeah, the day tag world. I've been. Before that to what an interesting story he was. Yeah. And what a short lift run.

26:59Before he played on the tag. I can be. Someone in the comments will let us know where I can do the research literally in real time as soon as I bring this up. But the other thing that he talked about that relates to Joey. Certainly is about deals getting done faster. But that they were working to get the data back. And so that's where they had to manage to get the data back. And first of all, we had the contract stuff going back and forth last year went down to literally the night before where they added some contract incentives that he ultimately did not even see. But we've seen this obviously in the past. Jalen Warren last year as well. I think was just the day before the. The Cam Hayward stuff. Pat was like the week of the same week or the Thursday before the game T. before week one, whatever it might have been. It was today. Actually, it was in my Facebook memories. The story on what? Well, there you go in 2021 to this day in history, five years ago exactly. So yeah, notoriously, the team will do these last minute deals. Troy Paul model on a plane before week one when he signed a contract extension. T.M. wishes these deals gets unfaster.

28:00Understand that from the players side. Takes two to tango. All these things should be thrown in there. What did you make about what he had to say? Yeah, I mean, I talked about this one and I'm running rush. A lot of times, the deadline is the only reason these deals get done. You got to put the deadline somewhere. The stillers are already moving the deadline up artificially from where it theoretically could be. And it would be one thing if you look at the pattern of these contracts and what you see is like the team over and over again, like folding at the last minute. And finally, making an offer that they had refused to make for weeks and weeks and weeks.

29:01And I think more often, it's the other way around. Like more often, the last deal that gets made was available to the player for that day. I know that was the case with TJ. I don't remember pots specifically. I mean, can I get any of what he was asking for last year? I don't know the specifics of the timing of that final offer, but he didn't get what he was looking for. That's for sure. He kind of got a parting gift. And so I don't know why you would put the, well, I mean, I know why the union wrecked Mike. I don't know why you would look at this from a third party standpoint and say, well, this is the stillers fund. I don't think there's any evidence for that.

30:04Yeah, every other team does the same. This is just the way things are. Like, I don't think it's the stillers. Yeah. I don't, it's somebody that's not obviously privy to the negotiations and stuff like that. And 10 probably be at times tunnel vision, just into what's going here. I brought up all the examples, but you're right. If I open that up to lead wide and look around, there's probably a lot of deals done within the same time frame. You know, 72 hours or so before first kick. It's just I'm obviously so focused on the stillers and their way of doing this. But the stillers deadline does sort of concentrate the deals here, but there's going to be a lot of teams who are going to do deals three weeks from that. I think that's better. Well, and I wasn't I mean, let's hear a point that there might be a deal on the table that the player isn't signing trying to squeeze out more and then they get to this point. And then ultimately take the deal that they could have taken

31:05weeks, weeks before. Yeah, one example, Darren Perry, who has signed in season, was an example of still has made that offer before the season started a couple weeks later, he said out. Right. That's the way. That's the way these go sometimes. And so I don't see any pattern of behavior that suggests that the stillers are especially slow to act here. The other thing is, I mean, they got out of the shoes to start these deals earlier this year came that is taking care of very early. Well, the sign obscene there so long ago that I forget that it happened this off season. You know, when they started on the draft class very early, getting two deals done before the end of OTAs like that. Why they weren't, you know, if they've done all six of those

32:07deals this week, I mean, maybe you'd have a point. But clearly, they were willing to deal a really just for whatever reason. So I've not been able to come to a deal in this instance. I'm not suggesting that he should have done this by the way. I mean, I fully understand where Joey's coming from on his side of things and the negotiation here too. But if he would have been willing to sign just pretty much any deal that was put in front of him by the Steelers, like he signed by now, like it's obvious that and the Steelers made an offer that, well, I understand him wanting more. It's not like it was some embarrassing offer that would have been some laughing stock deal. It would have made him, you know, a top 10 table. Are you referring to a recent one or the one doing back to the spring? When you went back to the spring, and one that was on the table,

33:08all off season would have made him an offer or would have made him a top 10 corner. Easily. I understand and ask him for more. I'm not saying he shouldn't, but it's not like that deal was just like insulting. Yeah, it's all like it was like being alone, the realm of possibility that he would agree to. Wow, we're already past 30 minutes, but I definitely got to get through a couple more things. I should go. Yeah. The other thing I want to bring it from came not related to Joey. So we can move on from that topic at least for today. We'll talk tomorrow about your JPJ. I see it then was can talk about. Probably Saturday at this rate. Just just. Can't talk about being year by year at this point, but won't play more than two. So 2026 or 2027, one of those will be his final two seasons. Wouldn't say necessarily a big surprise here. I think he's expressed this before, whether literally verbatim or kind of hinting at it in the past, but got two more years at most for cam.

34:11But I guess leaving the door open that this could possibly be it. 2026. Yeah, man, he was as good this year as he was last year. The hard press to see what way from that. But we'll see. His health probably factors a good bit into that as well. He's been pretty healthy. He's the last couple of seasons since the, what was the big injury? It was at 23. 22. 20. What was the big injury one other than the groin. Yeah. One surgery and he came back. Was it 20? It might have been 23 because I think it was the Titans game in 23. If he came back, which is like broadridge for a start. Cole Holdren tore his knee up in that game. But I think cam returned in that game. OK. Yeah, I think you're right. I think it was 23. Other than that year, he's been very healthy.

35:12And I always say like this job football player is a lot more difficult when you have to start dealing with injuries to like a lot of guys. For a lot of guys, you get late in your career and you kind of get this like, I want to do it. Yeah, I want to do it. And then you get hurt and like the work to come back from an injury is so much more difficult than the work to just stay ready for a lot of guys. That's it. That's the like, you know what? Never mind. I can't remember who it was. I do just listen to a podcast interview from a player said like I pulled his hamstring and training camp music. Yeah. No, not that. It was that was that was the retirement. And it's like that happens so much. So I think a lot of it will depend on you. He's been so good. I just I'm I'm picking cam over time.

36:14Yeah. Plus three. No matter what he's around already. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he's one of a couple of those rounds against father time already. So I I'm not going to bet against it happening either. I guess this is, you know, to people down play. Camp still to this point because they keep predicting the fall off because of age. I guess one point where age is, you know, a pretty notable proponent to bring up is exactly what you just said in terms of like the injury and the rehab. You know, you don't recover as quickly at that age or just the desire to be like, man, do I want like rehab socks for anybody that has not gone through rehabbing an injury. It sucks.
