Dana Nachman returns with Rob as the men of Easy wonder about the fate of Bull.
Music
Hello everyone and welcome to episode 50 of season 11 with our Minute Daily podcast
where we carry our way through the 2001 award-winning HBO mini series,
Band of Brothers, five minutes at a time. I'm Rob and joining me once again to finish off
her stint is a award-winning documentary in Dana Nachman. Welcome back to the show once again Dana.
Hi thank you for having me. Yes I told you I always like having you could you you you focus it on
things that I usually don't which is good you know because you have the documentary in
eye that it makes this conversation so much more interesting. Oh thank you. I'll never forget
the first time that we that we did this with the the great escape and you were talking about the
you know the the way that the the shot went through the window and all that stuff is great. So you
see that's why I keep inviting you back. Oh thank you. Yes. War ones are hard for me but I try.
Okay well we you know you you've been doing well enough it's you know we can't always do rom-com
so it's darn it. Or credit episodes of playing shins and rom-mobiles. Yeah that type of thing.
Oh my god I couldn't believe that. I love that but those but those were great episodes because you
talk so much about behind-the-scenes stuff that I wouldn't have known about. I think you even
it just you didn't go you you and you told me all about the insurance you know thing and you know
so you know I learned new things all the time. Not the most. Not the best part. We just we just
bought bound two policies for two films just yesterday so that's the update. You see there you go.
So episode 50 begins with the men of easy still in retreats and ends with both having to make
a decision. So we ended things yesterday with basically the guys from easy getting their bucks kicked
and you know they've decided that they're going to have to retreat and we just see so many guys
just running down the road trying to just get for cover trying to get out of the way one of the
British tanks one of the British tanks shoots off another rocket you know to try and give them
some cover and they they they won't make it back behind the tanks into the transports and start
getting into the transports themselves as quickly as possible. You know it's interesting the
way that they that they that they present this all to us and you know someone's screaming keep
moving keep low and then we see lifting go let's go let's go over you go and then we we see
lifting standing there by the by the transport and he's looking at Buck who you know we can see
that Buck is bleeding from his rear end you know in his uniform we you know we it's not that
graphic you can see you can see that there are stains on his pants as that and Garnier looks at
the lifting it goes one bullet four holes and lifting goes yeah almost a miracle
and then Garnier looks at it goes yeah I don't think we know where bullies huh so you know
they're they're now a little concerned that Bull hasn't made it back with everybody else
but it's still you know it's it's nice to see a lot of the guys all the way back and then we see
winters checking out what's going on and he starts screaming let's go let's go let's go keep moving
you moving move him out let's go hurry up let's go let's go so you know as far as winters is concerned
he's not happy about the fact that they're having to retreat but he wants to get as many men
back as possible which is uh is very important and then nicks goes up next to him and nicks goes how
bad he goes I don't know yet and then there's a great shot here because you know one of the Germans
actually ends up shooting nicks and his helmet goes flying and you can see that he gets hit right
in the helmet right now so I mean again from from a movie-making perspective it looks very very
realistic that he just got shot in the head and I mean having seen saving from Orion where a guy
gets shot in the head and pulls off his his helmet to look at it and then get shot in the head
literally you know it's it's nice that they don't do that here with nicks you know his uh yeah
you know his helmet uh he goes flying and winters rushes to him and goes uh nicks goes I'm all right
I'm all right and then he goes am I all right it goes yeah so I mean first of all I'd like the fact
that they're showing us the friendship of these two guys even at this point in the middle of battle
you know that as soon as uh nicks gets hit winters forgets about what he's doing and goes to
to help him out I like the way they do that yeah definitely need that yeah I mean again we
as anyone who knows the story knows that the two of them uh you know spoiler for anyone who hasn't
seen this the two of them remain friends for another 50 years afterwards until until nicks and died
you know of old age yeah so you know this is you know on the one hand
the whole idea of the show is to show the bond between the men but every so often we see the
personal bonds between them you know another example is uh bathed and uh and garnered you know these
are also guys who remain friends for 50 60 years afterwards you know so it's it's not just the idea of
being a part of this big group it's also possibly you know meeting someone who will be the friend
a friend for the rest of your life right because you've been through something so intense together
exactly and nicks and winters they also went through all the training together you know and they
also dealt with sobbing together as you know as officers as opposed to with just amended definitely
that so I again I like to fact how throughout the course of the series it comes back to their
friendship also so it's a great yeah I feel like for me because I'm not like a huge war movie person
like that kind of thing just keeps it together for me it took completely probably everybody but
right again that that's part of the whole idea here you know then the the two of them uh you know
crawl over for some cover behind one of the tanks and lifting shows up and lifting goes captain
we got four dead 11 injury yep so you know it's it's good that uh lifting is able to come and
both give winters and us an update as to what the what's going on and he goes all right let's
move them out and then look goes oh and sir random is missing too there's rambling yes sir
okay let's go so you know the the idea is that you know you you want to uh care for as many of the
men as possible and you want to make sure that as many of them show up you know when when they're
retreating but you know you can't the risk anyone to go deal with the trying to find a missing man
who at this point could be presumably dead right so you know it's uh it's it's it's nice the
way that they uh that they show this to us and you know the idea is that sometimes you have to
you know as a commander and you know as as as a a boss or a manager or whatever it is
sometimes you need to make decisions that uh uh that that are the best for the entire group as
opposed to for an individual you know but but you can still see the the look of pain on winter's
face by making this decision like he's not happy about having made this decision but he does know
this is the right thing right because you know again it up going back to the same primary
run analogy you're not going to risk eight guys for one guy because you don't know what right uh
what the story is I mean again they know that they have four that that uh that that that the
tidier so you know it doesn't mean that everyone uh you know it might be that there's five
and why go risk something for that you know so I I like the way that they uh that they
present this and then uh you know the the the the great music of this series begins to swell as the
uh transport starts moving and we see Webster and we see that that his hand is like really
filled with blood you know because he was dealing with uh Glen Kim Quinken who was uh who's one of
the guys that were skilled you know it's you know it's it's a nice way to show the the individual
perspective on what they're doing as they're they're moving out from from this battle you know we
get to see the the various men comforting one another as they move along which uh which is also good
it shows once again the uh the camaraderie between them and you have the the new guys that are all
looking trying to figure out how they're going to deal with this type of stuff too yeah it's not just
the the veterans the veterans and the new guys that that all now have to uh deal with this defeat
that they've just gone through but uh I do like the way the camera moves from man to man and we see
different expressions on their faces all showing how distraught they are in all that's going on
yeah no I like that too and it gives you like a perspective you know each person has their own
perspective um and I like I like that it gives you kind of a grounding and then right after that
we go to the next shot of of the one who's by himself which isn't totally different perspective
right right but beforehand uh you know the as the transports moving so we've been
begun here check Martin and says where's the bull he goes I don't know and again you know the the idea
here is that uh these guys in some ways are more destructed that they don't know what happened
the bill as a bull as opposed to uh you know knowing for sure that he was uh you know killed or
captured or something like that you know it's the the unknown that is more more of an issue for
these guys right um and then uh you know it lingers a little bit on uh Martin's face and then
we're back in the village again and we see that the Germans have pretty much taken over the village
and we see a whole bunch of uh of their tanks and uh APCs and things just moving through plus all the
men walking through and it's it happens to be I think it's a great shot the way that they do it
because they're they're showing us that you know we saw all the easy guys are running away
and here we see the Germans just marching uh marching along without any fear yeah I really really
love this shot and then the the way that the the camera then moves uh down into the uh the this
I guess the sewer and we see that bull is actually hiding in the sewer which is also great right
and then look at um like the the flash of um fire like on the other side I love that yeah
like and you can see it in the it's the tank on fire and then and then you see it underneath if it's
like super super classy shot like exactly and he's he's just looking trying to figure out okay
what's he gonna do to survive this right you know and then uh it it becomes night time and we see
one of the tanks uh is still on fire and start to explode and then we we see that bull is actually uh
no longer in the sewer you know we see that he's in he's in a barn and he's trying to figure out
how he's going to even safe give himself safe in this barn and he goes and finds a little bit of
a place off to the side and uh you know makes uh I guess makes makes a safe place for him to uh to hold
up you know in the hay though yeah I I like the way that is and you know he's he's vigilant but he's
you know we see that he's uh somewhat tired also and uh needs to constantly make sure that
that everything's good for him yeah that's interesting also how they cut from like him seeing the barn
I mean presumably that's the barn yeah to being in it yeah I like that yeah I like that too because
they don't need to show us how he escapes and gets there you know with no one's around or anything um
it's you know kind of when you're thinking about editing and writing or scripts it's like you know
you get in get in uh late and leave early in terms of you know you don't have to see them
opening the door and then running through the door you could they could just be in there you know
that's what this this is to me it's like you know we missed all the boring parts and we just got to
when he got to the we he sees the place and we're in the place right it's that's the magic of editing
yeah movies I agree and I like the way that they do that definitely definitely is a good way
and then we see the open is the stock of his gun and pulls out uh what seems to be a uh okay
anybar or something maybe it's a chocolate or something like that uh you know so he he has
something there to uh to help him sustain him while he's uh waiting around trying to figure out
you know what he's gonna do in order to get any um but again he he knows that he's got to stay on top
of things he pulls out his knife because he hears someone coming and then he sees a man come into
into there and he puts his knife to the to the man's throat and and then the man looks over and we
see there's a young woman next to it and uh also coming into the barn and both sees it and begins to
realize that you know these these are friendlies you know this is just the farmer and uh and and uh
and his daughter and then uh the shot changes and we actually see them covering up a body I believe
that this has been clinton then clinton that they're they're covering up here covering up here
and you know it's also trying to show us the uh casualties of war I guess you can say
and you know we you know we saw before we're with the blood on his hand we saw
we're trying to save him and now we see we're just looking over his body so you know it tells us
something about Webster about how he's dealing with with this situation yeah and then uh
we're back with a bunch of the uh the new recruits and uh hashi says every Friday shot the whole time
and uh Webster shows up like a badge of honor sort of I guess you know well he's he's gone jammed on him
you know which goes to show that uh you know he is a new recruit he's someone who who didn't know
what he used to be doing at that time right that is something about that and you know these these
guys are all trying to figure out what to do and then uh you know one of the guys that's there he
he goes uh anything out and it goes about what he goes anything so we don't know exactly they're
completely cool it says to what they need to do at this point right uh but but then you know
the shot moves a little bit and we see Garcia who is basically uh you know also very uh
destroyed but this whole thing and all these guys just you know they they have uh uh
uh you know someone said that you know they they brought him a loaf of bread but they're able uh
you know to at least find find some way I guess to uh uh give them some energy at this point
they said they do find anything out and he goes about what and he goes anything and he goes
about what we're doing next and the response is no I didn't hear one thing so again these guys
are completely clueless as to what they're supposed to do at this point which makes sense you
know everyone was just in retreat and they need to uh figure out you know what they're going to do
and then I like the fact that at this point you know they they they they give us an update on
you know uh the fact that uh uh you know Lieutenant Brewer was shot and you know so he goes
Lieutenant Brewer is going to make it he goes what it says Lieutenant Brewer is going to make it
goes nah there's no way because uh you know when when we saw Brewer get shot uh earlier this week
you know he had turned his head because uh I think I think both had called out to him and then he
was shot in the neck and he goes nah there's no way he goes he's heading back to England
they'll probably send him home how is that possible that well he did turn his head into last
second and started to random and called out to him so I think part of the idea here also is to
make us care more about bull at this point because you know here we're we're more or less finding out
that bull saved Brewer's life you know even even at one necessarily intentional but he still managed
to do it so you know I I like the way that they uh they give that to us uh yeah yeah so uh I mean
again there's less carry along with the story yeah again it it really they all believes that
that Brewer was that I mean basically they say that the you know someone said forget him he's gone
he's gonna die and they they apparently just left Brewer there lying on the ground they said he
heard it all and never forgot it never let them in forget it when he recovered and rejoined the
company so that that's uh yeah that's not necessarily something you want to hear so yeah it's
a little bit of a problem at at this point we're we're back in the barn and you know bull is still
trying to figure out what what he needs to do with this situation you know is this a friendly or not
and he's you know debating that that issue as the five minute segment ends so people are gonna have to
come back tomorrow to find out the exactly what he decides to do you know is is he going to slip
this guy's throat or not stressful cliffhanger yes yes you see that's the thing when you when you do
movies by minute so you have more cliffhangers than than are intended by the filmmakers yes
yeah totally exactly no one expected us to have to think about that but uh it's it's nice to play
spend in there but it's sort of in the DNA of the storytelling right that's what makes people keep
watching exactly I agree I don't have I don't have any problems with it you know and come on I
don't think that any of the people on me this uh 25 years ago believed that there would be someone
crazy enough to cut it into five minute episodes and and start discussing the whole thing so
you know you know the fact that this five minutes ends exactly on the cliffhanger is great you know
I uh I'm I'm happy about that yes totally so uh Dana do you have anything else you want to say
about this five minute no no I like it um I like the kind of back and forth of the storylines um
keeps you really engaged and the uh the themes are the overarching themes of you know the
relationships I love it yeah and I also like the fact that that what what they're also doing here is
they're showing us uh pretty much for the first time a failure of easy company you know it's not
only about all of the successes but here's a failure it's something that we you know hoped
that we'd be able to do we were completely outnumbered the tanks got uh got got blown up along the
way so we were in retreat so you know we got to see how uh winters deals with that also so right
all right we continued exactly so uh today's segment is called oh brother where my guests will
give their top five uh movie brothers so uh Dana why don't you start with your number five and work
your way up okay so my number five is blues brothers my number four is okay this is the this is the
really um embarrassing one but it's been on my house on repeat so I'm just going to do it
diary of a Olympic kid okay you you're not the first person to use it really yeah that's embarrassing for
all um no but it was just um it's it's been on my house on repeat for many years it was not my
choice to watch it um okay number three is um Mrs. Doubtfire number two is slash and number three
and number one is Rayman okay that is a great list right I like that thank you thank you
all right and now we will uh once again play the game that I know you don't like playing
but uh we're we're gonna try oh no it the the game is uh named that world or two movie oh gosh
so we're you know me I'm bad at the time I have more confidence in you than than you think
we'll see how you do okay
okay all right so let's spin the wheel and see what you get and around and around and around
the wheel go I wonder if you even have my favorite movie um it actually could be considered
a world or two movie okay this is a a movie from 1987
uh-huh okay um directed by even Spielberg oh oh that's gonna be easy well we're gonna find out
starring uh John Malkovich and Christian Bale and it takes place in a uh I guess you can
sort of call it a Japanese internment camp but you know it's not for soldiers it's for civilians
do you have any clue what that might be um is it empire of the sun yes it is
you see you know didn't trust yourself well I know I gotta get in the zone now I'm in the zone
after three episodes apparently but that that's good that's a good thing all right excellent
